Review Macau Asian Tavern - Western Cape

A pleasant experience for the first time. People are very friendly and the service was very friendly and efficient. The duck (half portion) was delicious and more than enough for someone who is not a big (portion) eater. Decor is very decadent and comfortable to make yourself at home. The noise level slowly picked up as the restaurant filled up with a lovely buzz when we left. Will definitely go back for more Asian cuisine.

Where can you find a blend of southern Chinese and Portuguese cuisine, with significant influences from Southeast Asia? Only at Macau! Chef Kuan Geo Lai together with Seelan Sundoo have created a place that sparks imagination for the tastebuds. Situated in Hout Street, just off Breë, you’ll find a place that doesn’t look like it belongs in the CBD. You step into a restaurant from another world, where a modern feel pays homage to tradition. Based around ordering a few different dishes to try and share around friends, the menu boasts something for everyone - from dim sum, to ramen, there’s something that you will love. Not only for the taste, but for the passion Chef puts into the meals. A friend and I went for lunch at Macau. We started off with the chicken & garlic chive potstickers, and the honey glazed cha siu pork. The potstickers are packed with stuffing with a thin pastry casings; honey glazed pork is crispy, tasty, with a sweet taste at the same time. What stood out the most for me was the aromatic crispy duck with mandarin pancakes. The make-your-own pancake concept is something you don’t often find, and everything married so well. Wrapping the crispy duck, fresh cucumber, with a dash of the homemade Hoisan sauce in the thin pancake was heaven. The Macau Roll takes sushi to a new level with the flame seared salmon. The freshness comes out and the mayo adds a bit of tang to the dish as well. Just before dessert, we tried the salt cod fritters with garlic aioli. This little balls melt in your mouth, and the pure cod flavor isn’t over powered by anything. You know when you order fondant, you want that oozing middle? Well, omg did Macau’s truffle chocolate fondant ooze for sure! It was a rich fondant that paired perfectly with the green tea ice cream and chocolate soil. Macau is a gem that Cape Town has been waiting for. Spend an afternoon snacking on these dishes while feeling how much thought went into blending these flavor combinations, will make you appreciate eating them even more. 🥢🥟🌿 A massive thank you to Dennis for being so knowledgeable on the dishes, and Chef chatting about them made us enjoy them even more!

We decided to have our ladies lunch here and arrived at around 13h15 on a Wednesday and to our surprise, the restaurant was quite empty. We had heard how busy it gets at night, a place where all the beautiful people congregate. Their limited wine list is quite pricey and corkage is R80 per bottle so they are not shy. Most of us opted for the Duck, Pancakes and Plum sauce which was delicious and well worth the trip to town. I loved the decor and the layout of the restaurant and the service was excellent.

Nice asian fusion tapas style restaurant situated where the old Savoy Cabbage restaurant used to be. The interior of the restaurant has been given some minor renovation though a lot of it remains the same. The menu is interesting and varied with lots of unusual dishes. There is something for almost every palate , especially if you enjoy Asian food. I would remark though that I found the sizes of the dishes were not substantial given the prices charge. I found that I had to order more than my usual starter and main course in order to feel satisfied. This is a great place to chose several dishes amongst friends and all have a taste of each other's.

Great vegetarian options, service and atmosphere ! Staff checked in regularly which was great. Ordered vegetarian options which were quite flavoursome! On the Thursday night, they had a live singer who kept the entire restaurant well entertained! Great night out !

Popped in for an impromptu late lunch on Saturday. I loved the decor. For big groups it is best to arrange with the restaurant in advance as the layout caters more for 2 or four guests - not your typical Asian restaurant where the norm is 6 to 10 people per table. For mains we had the Asian duck, served on a bed of potatoes and crunchy vegetables and pork belly Ramen. To end our meal, nothing beats their perfect truffle chocolate fondant with green tea ice cream - dont skip dessert here.

Amazing food and vibe!!! I recommend this to anyone! However, the only let down was that we booked a table at 20:30 but only got seated at 21:15! But the manager was helpful and very friendly! we will 100% be coming back!!! Thank you!!

Macau is a little bit of paradise hidden away in the heart of the Mother City. The decor is makes you feel as though you're sitting in an Asian garden. Loved the hanging plants. The food is delicious (that's an understatement, it's exceptional) and the service is friendly. Will be back soon!

Most delicious food I have had since Hong Kong! Even those who have have never travelled to Asia will be mesmerized by the simplicity of the complex flavours in these dishes. The food is 10/10 The service is 10/10 The hospitality is 12/10 A personal check in from Chef Kuan is always much appreciated, no more or less when it comes with a complimentary desert. Tonight Chef Ben gave us a private cooking class on his speciality spring bean dish. The most simple yet tasty dish. For a dining experience that will leave you yearning for the next time you can visit I can highly recommend Macau Asian Tavern. Some of my favorite dishes: Chicken pot stickers Crispy duck pancakes Pork main Spring beans veg side Mushroom veg side
