I visited the Gateway of India on a weekday at around 3:30 pm, and it was quite crowded. There was no place to sit and relax or enjoy the surroundings for a while. However, despite the crowds, this place is truly amazing. To fully enjoy the experience, I recommend planning your visit during less bus
Definitely worth popping down if in Mumbai. Great view of the Taj Hotel too. Enter from the north side and ignore the touts as no ticket required. There is a security barrier, so quicker if you don't have bags. Lots of touts inside, but they took no for an answer.
