Review Steak & Ale - Umhlanga

We've always passed Steak & Ale on our way to Seattle coffee. So we decided to finally give it a try, I was a bit skeptical at first but I must say the food didn't disappoint 🤩 Just what we needed on this cold day in Durban. MUST TRY starters: Garlic rolls, Chicken livers and spicy Mexican wings. Mains: full Peri-Peri chicken and steak & Ale pie. Everything was cooked and seasoned perfectly, comfort food that really hit the spot. I would definitely go back and order those starters alone as a main.

Waitress was Great (cass), friendly , fast and welcoming in a place where the atmosphere Seems very drunken pub that. Restaurant, food was served fast and hot , tasted great , beer was cold and fresh , better than expected , worth a visit .

Waitress (Cass) very friendly, service was great. More of a pub than a restaurant but the meal was good.

Yummy food and very attentive server Yanka/Janka...it took a while for the food to come out but Yanka kept checking on us if we were hanging on..she explained what the menu entailed as certain things we did not understand. The place at night can get rowdy due to the crowd and cold due it's openness..but food was real good.

Great vibe with good food. Staff are helpful and friendly and venue is conveniently located. Large screen tvs for all the screening of live sports. Menu has a wide variety and reasonably priced and value for money.

Steak and Ale is a pleasant and relaxing pub experience. On a road with many many options, this one will not disappoint for drinks or some food. The staff are friendly, the menu has a large selection of food and drink to satisfy every taste and flavour of your choice.

Awesome atmosphere and great service and food is amazing

A bustling bar vibe, with great food. The portions are quite large . I ordered a 400g pork ribs served with chips and onion rings for the price of R120. Very well worth it and quite filling . The waiters are always walking around so it's easy to get their attention if you need anything else. My dad ordered the rib eye steak which was huge and arrived sizzling on the plate , cooked to a perfect medium rare . All in all a great experience but does tend to get very busy especially in the evenings and on weekend with more of a younger crowd .

Nice vibe, food portions are large and the food was really nice. However our waitress was busy and when we wanted to leave I had to spend time finding her. Overall good place to visit and has a smoking section. 😉

Waited 15 minutes for a waiter who ignored us twice after trying to grab his attention. He serves 2 walk ins after us whilst knowing we were just waiting on menus.

Loved this place we went here for drinks after a nappy party. We had a lot to drink before hand, these guys just made our night even better. We got the platters and the nachos and oh my word they were to die for.

I really honestly didn’t enjoy the food, got a well done and fatty steak when I had ordered a medium steak and when I told the friendly waiter they brought out the chef who went on to tell me how he went to Chef school and that this was AAA grade meat, which I’m guessing I didn’t know about. Extremely disappointing.

The staff was friendly and efficient in their service. Suzaan got me seated right away and assigned a waiter.<br/>I ordered the pepper steak medium rare, it was done to perfection and the sauce with the correct amount of bite.

Steak & Ale is pretty great for a chilled vibe on the weekends or a quick drink with mates and family. Definitely pop in if you’re in and around the village.

Wow... went to the Steak and Ale for dinner last night. My husband ordered a fillet steak with mushroom sauce. The steak was based and cooked to perfection. Tender meat and the flavour was fantastic, even with the mushroom sauce you could still taste the flavour of the Steak basting. I felt like pasta Alfredo and although this is not on the menu they were more than willing to accommodate. The service was swift, attentive and polite. Would highly recommend and will definitely be returning!

Had a great family lunch here the other day. The restaurant is within walking distance from our place so it is easily accessible. The atmosphere was great and it was nice to see all the fancy cars that drive by.<br/><br/>The service was good, and we were well attended to, the Food was great, We ordered from their lunch menu that is availability during the week. <br/><br/>My mother and I had the Chicken Florentine and the Chicken was beautifully soft and the Spinach to die for. My husband and father had the Ale pie, and I had a bite- it was also really good. My brother had his first go at nachos, he.didn't particularly like it but it was more a personal preference thing I think, I had a bite , for me.it was to be expected from Nachos , the guacamole was a little bit to sour. <br/><br/>Otherwise a great experience and money well spent, will definitely go here again!

Myself and Stacey enjoy meeting friends at the Steak and Ale. Also hearty pub fare to enjoy if you hungry . We've always had a good meal here.... Baskets are a great option too for snacking overa few cold ones. All round a good pub to visit.

Big shout out to the manager who organized us bone marrow. The best bone marrow I have ever had in a resteraunt. Served with warm bread. This was ordered prior as it is not on their menu x

I like this place guys, whether its a night out drinking too much beer and tequila on a friday or a nice juicy steak on a sat, this place is great. Really awesome vibe. Service is pretty mich like pub service, nothing to rave about

The steak and Ale has such a great vibe. We went there to watch the soccer and olympics and they are not short of tv's to watch on. The service was fantastic and the steak and ribs were delicious. Highly recommended for a chilled Sunday afternoon lunch and drinks.

Umhlanga Boet! These people are more Joburg than Joburg. But anyway, different review for a different application. So, it's packed when I get there and immediately the manager says "no worries, I've got you!" - and he did. Ordered one beer at the bar and bam!.. We have a table. Service was good, unfortunately the food didn't arrive at the same time. My poor mate Bruce had to start when I was finishing. That's always Kak. The steak could have been warmer, but it tasted so good. Mash was creamy, Avo was ripe! Where they lose MASSIVE points is the the lack of lavatory facilities. Every time I needed "relief" I to wait in a cue. For that reason, you lost another valuable point - and it needs to be sorted out.

Upon arriving at the Steak and Ale the restaurant was packed due to the piblic holiday.We were approached by the manager who placed us at the bar and looked after us.We got a table after 15 minutes and was not dissapointed.Service was spot on.The steak was the best i have had in Umhlanga.Decently priced.A very well run establishment.

Looked very promising. Food actually looked good however we sat without even being noticed, even AFTER trying to flag down a water..... And this on a Monday night. Eventually left.Again no notice or attempt to redeem... Cheers dudes. No business from us again ever!

I had a good old rump and Karen had a fillet. Excellent service from Gareth and the food was as good as it gets. Very satisfied with the entire outing.

At least a year since I last visited S&A, and for the record my time away has not been due to any past negatives, as I was always impressed with the food here.<br/>So after exhausting pretty much all our options in Umhlanga, I decided to try an old faithful again and as was expected, I was not disappointed.<br/>The service is typical Umhlanga/coastal, NOT outstanding, however still way above a lot of their competitors.<br/>Our table had a mix of succulent steaks and Smash burgers.<br/>I had a MED Rare Rump and ordered the extra onion rings (awesome)<br/>Ice cold drinks<br/>Glad to be back<br/>Buzzing atmosphere

Lovely Saturday afternoon catch up spot. A few drinks and delicious steak roll! Our waitress made the afternoon that much better with her amazing personality! A definite must !

Good vibe, good ale, good wine, good steak and good service. The succulent Balsamic Steak was perfectly medium rare with the fresh crunchy roast vegetables. Competent staff enjoying to be there was the highlight.

From Joburg so we weren't quite sure what to expect but we were pleasantly surprised by the fancy exterior and yet simple pub food. Nachos are a must at this place! Be warned...you'll need a bib.

What a disappointment, on New Years Eve we ordered two double shots of vodka with red bull, saw the barman pour the shots from the vodka bottle, we were charged accordingly and turns out it was Water Instead of vodka!!!!! Very unimpressed

Vibrant and chilled atmosphere with best service and the friedliest waiters. The food....THE. MOST. AWESOME. BEEF. BURGER. EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Coming back again, and again and again!!!!

The Steak and Ale has a great vibe with fantastic service and reasonably priced drinks. The food looked great so next time I will definitely give it a try!

This busy little restaurant / pub hold a combination of beer, meat and sports watching crafted into a compact little place.<br/><br/>There is nothing fancy about the place, they have kept the decor to simple and cheerful. However the food speaks for itself and I would highly recommend having a steak or burger. <br/><br/>I opted for fillet while I visit there recently, and I can only say that it ran off my tongue like butter of a hot knife. <br/><br/>The only down side to this place is that there is a lack of staff and thus the service is a bit slow, but if you have all afternoon, then its a great place to kick back have a beer and a little bit of meat.

This place has an awesome atmosphere. If you are looking for a place to go with friends or maybe watch some sport its the place to be. Friendly staff and good service. Nachos starter was delicious and really good value for money. I was so gull I could not eat a main meal afterwards!

Very busy "pub" style restaurant. Lots of people, nice terrace with wine barrels as tables and high stools to sit on. Conventional tables and chairs inside. Had a quick starter to fix the missed lunch hunger - the snails in mozzarella are really good, as are the peri-peri chicken livers. I would have no hesitation in trying this as a dinner venue.

Really great spot! Delicious food! Steak cooked to perfection, each bite melts in your mouth! Make a reservation if you want to dine at a table ( it is always busy ) otherwise the bar is a great place to hang out and have drinks and starters or something to nibble on (portions are generous!) , would recommend this to any red meat lover looking to indulge!

Pleasantly surprised is how I can best describe steak and ale. The food was absolutely superb and at a reasonable price. I must admit there was a wait but it just meant more time to enjoy a cocktail.

Every now and then, hunger and the perfect steak are in the same pace at the same time. Fab pub atmosphere, hot hot hot jalapeño poppers and great craft beers, or so I'm told.

What an amazing restaurant will an immaculate ambiance. If you love red meat paired with a good beer. This is definitely the spot for you. It's a stone throw away from the beach and along a busy and vibes road filled with amazing night life vibes.

We really loved the vibe but the food was really unimpressive. We ordered some starters and sent one plate back to the kitchen, the kitchen must have been using dirty oil. They should have been better prepared for the holiday seasons.

Great location, tight in the middle of the Umhlanga strip. <br/>The food here was excellent. The service was good too, we had a very attentive waiter who was knowledgeable about the menu. <br/>I recommend you try the beef carpaccio starter which is excellent. <br/>The rump steak is also very good with quite a good selection of toppings.
