Review Greedy Buddha - Umhlanga

Karthick Naidoo
2nd Review: We've been regulars here, and I must say the great thing about Greedy Buddha is the consistency. The food is always delicious and the service is excellent. The new menu, including the sushi platters are well worth the now pricier visit. 1st Review: Guaranteed excellent meal, excellent service, fantastic location! Their tasting menus are well thought. The overall quality is exceptional!

The food at Greedy Buddha is top class, full of flavour & very generous. I love the mix of the Asian cuisine & modern techniques. It's best to try a whole range of their dishes, one at a time, and make an evening of it. But a quick lunch bite is also a tasty option!

First time visiting here and the food tastes great. Prices are well worth it with large portions being offered. Desert options are unusual and different from the normal brownie and ice cream combo others offer. There is a sushi option menu as well and tasting menu for 2 which is affordable. Dim sums and noodles taste authentic.

Definitely one of my top 10 favorite restaurants to visit in Durban, Umhlanga. Food was excellent, the service was great and the ambience fantastic. Must try is the crispy pork belly and prawn... Best I've ever tasted.

Greedy for more! It was lovely to sit outside on a warm evening under the fairy lights. The service was excellent, the waitress recommended dishes that were delicious. Shared the 7 Spice prawns and the Chilli Chicken won ton for starters 👌🏽 the Won Tons were piping hot so I do suggest giving it a second before popping it into your mouth! 🙈 had the Pad Thai for main, they split the portion for us into seperate bowls. Much appreciated :) excellent flavor with a kick. thanks Greedy Buddha!

The food is amazing! I had enjoyed my meal very much and have full intentions of eating there many more times. The drinks and cocktails are also delicious and perfect to have with a tasty meal. The dishes are presented beautifully as well and the restaurant was a delight to dine in. The vibe was chilled and fun with great music.
Nishanth Parus
Great place. Really ejoyed the food. A lot of variety in the menu. Will definitely go back. The portions were quite substantial so even had it for lunch the next day. Cocktails were ok but not consistent. Went on a Sunday evening and it was quiet.
Prailene Dawson
My friends and I had such an amazing time. The vibe, the food and the service was excellent! I highly recommend it.
Nadia Adam
Great for cocktails...cocktail specials everyday! Friendly staff. Delicious Asian food that would make you come back for more!
Rebecca Coopen (Becca)
Lovely restaurant. Best Asian fusion restaurant around. Lovely atmosphere. Amazing staff and an exceptional chef, highly recommend this place.

Such a disappointing experience. We had eaten here before and were taken aback by the deterioration of the food, service and cocktails. It seems that the preparation of our meal was careless - and the preferred method of cooking was the microwave.
At the end of the meal, we discussed our experience with the manager who pretended to be concerned but failed to follow up . Not a Restuarant we would both with again

Great idea but poor execution. Prawn dumpling was fishy (last thing you'd expect seeing that we're on the coast). Chicken dumpling was too spicy. Duck was OVER cooked and difficult to chew. The bao was dense. Over all the food was lacking in flavour. The drinks were nice and so was the service. I genuinely felt bad for not liking it based solely on how apologetic our server, Joy, was.
Samantha
The seating area at the Greedy Buddha was very enjoyable - particularly the outside area. Whilst the menu was very exciting, the execution of their meals was poor. The duck was very overcooked, and so was difficult to chew and eat. The flavours were below average, and the meals were disappointing. A good note was the wonderful service we received.

Ate at Greedy Buddha last night. The service was so poor. Waited an hour for our meal. The lamb chops were served cold so the fat had solidified. The won ton soup was so bad. Tasteless and sickening.
Very horrible experience.
Won't be returning.
Nik Foodie
Nice decor.
Decent service.
Great cocktails.
Disappointed with the dishes we ate. The spices were overpowering in some of the dishes.
Many positives but negatives as well.
Salt.
Lovely service and ambience. However, the duck and lamb dumplings were somewhat of a letdown. Pricing super affordable! Perhaps we’ll have better luck next time

Something different to beluga.
Dim sims are way way better.
Sushi is excellent.
Service delivery was ok.
Ambience is good.
Will definitely be back again.
Sarah Herrington
Lovely, varied menu focused on fresh Asian flavours. A lot of the food was on the expensive side, but the bang bang noodles I got were delicious and generously-portioned. They had a very unique take on Pad Thai, which I did not enjoy as much as the bang bang noodles. The wraps were a bit on the smaller side, but also very tasty, particularly the falafel one. They had a 50% special on cocktails so we tried their mojitos, which I though were average and not very cold. Service was okay, and I think ambience would be better during the evening. Keen to come back to try their sushi and tapas.
Adele Reilly
Delicious food and drinks and a fantastic ambience. Owner is great and friendly. They have great non alcoholic cocktails as I was pregnant when I visited. The reviews of this restaurant were nothing short off the truth. Definitely going back.
Nikisha
The food at this place is off the charts. Amazing flavour, alot of ingredients but work so well together. I always order the Malaysian bang bang noodles and it can actually serve 3 people so I usually take it away and have it later because it's so filling. Very pricey but good quality and quantity of food. Half price cocktails everyday, you would think that they cut down on the alcohol because it's half price to cut costs like most restaurant do and you can taste the difference, here they serve you good quality cocktails and so worth it.

I THOROUGHLY enjoyed my dinner last night here. I’ve been wanting to try this place out forever! The ambiance is amazing, especially outside with their lighting. I had the standard Tapas Tasting Menu. This gave me an opportunity to try out a variety of their dishes. They were soooo good OMG these guys know their stuff. EVERYTHING tasted so good. The waiter was also excellent. On my list as 1 of the best spots in Umhlanga!

Food: 3
Ambiance: 2
Service: 2

Surprisingly good sushi for Durban. Many vegetarian options which is really nice and clean and neat restaurant! Ushir Mehta

Great place and good food. the view is amazing and you can host birthday celebrations, baby shower, bridal shower and many more. The staff is so welcoming.

Business lunch to impress! We had a few starters for sharing at the table (highly recommend the eisbein) and then sushi platters. So much care and thought has gone into the sushi menu - seriously cannot recommend the sushi enough!
Nicolene Govender
Most probably one of my favorite restaurants. Loved everything about this gem of a place. The food was an experience in its self. The tasting menu is definitely a must. Highly recommend the pork belly 🙂
Lauren Robertson
Excellent food and cocktails. We ordered a bit of everything to try and weren’t disappointed at all. Unfortunately the bathrooms let the whole experience down :( no toilet paper, no soap in the dispenser and the toilet looked quite grubby. However the food was outstanding and I would go back for sure!

Popped in here for lunch, tried the 5-spice duck wok dish with noodles, the description was hot and spicy however it lacked heat and flavour. My bf tried the crispy pork belly woke dish with noodles, he was also disappointed with the dish. Plus side, the portions are huge can easily share one meal and half price cocktails are always a winner.
Yuvthi Harrielall
Delicious food!
The experience is amazing! The ducking fantastic platter is an absolutely scrumptious meal. Can't wait to go back.
#dateNight please Jayd Naidoo

Was disappointed
Ambience was poor
Only about five tables occupied which probably contributed to lack of ambience
Service was good if a tad intrusive
Had prawn dim sum ( dim sum disintegrated when dipped in sauce) And I thought prawns were a bit ‘ gamey ‘
Mains I chose Peking duck
While it was tender I really expected more taste ( veggies were broccoli and beans)
Harry Sinko
Great vibe, awesome food, adventurous cocktails and fabulous staff, spacious venue.....the playlist was chilled....all in all a great experience...we’re definitely coming back!
Deepak Kanjee
Good Ambience . Friendly service . Ordered a few starters and mains dim sum , sushi , chicken & prawn green curry , kingklip . Very blend , no taste .

Food was all salty , fishy and smelly

Food was very ordinary . Have tasted better .
Not sure what the fuss is about , can give it a skip

I loved the menu
The duck was amazing
Ambience was lovely
Service was good
Nice view if seated outside on the balcony
Will definitely go again!
Deshivan Shunmugam
The sushi was good and the chicken was good but the padthai tasted and smelt like backside, the ramen was also very average nothing to be amazed about
Marco Dias
Tried this place over December holidays but was left disappointed not that it was bad food but not what I expected. I can’t see myself going back.
Marcus Naidoo
Amazing food, fantastic ambiance and vibe...just one thing to spoil a great evening is bad service. Waiters are almost non existent and you have to get up and walk to call them for service, including the bill. Will surely go back if service is improved.
Gee
Had a bit of an issue with our table when we got there but the staff were super helpful in sorting this out. This place is really amazing, surpassed my expectations by far. Great ambiance, really awesome cocktails and gosh the food......absolutely enjoyed all courses. Ate way too much ddn't even have space for desert. Really can't wait for a 2nd visit.

Beautiful decor, all the food was beautifully presented and tasted wonderful! We had the tasting menu and it was delicious! The only critic would be our waiter who spoke so much and so fast that we could barely understand him.
Definitely a must try!

Tasty food... Very beautiful decor and ambience especially in the evenings ... the view is basically that of gateway theatre of shopping ... Staff are friendly...

Excellent (although slightly middle of the road) Asian fare that is delicious. Great service. Had amazing duck spring rolls and WonTon soup that was a tad oily but very tasty. Great choice.
Sean Wade Lucien
Oh wow what can a say the meal is a flavor explosion in your mouth a nice twist on traditional sushi but my goodness I wasn't expecting that the service and cocktails were world class keep it up @tracey_jane_lucien

Ah thank you Nigel for such fantastic service last night! Was our first time at the greedy Buddha last night and we were not disappointed! The lemon fizz cocktail was amazing! My ramen soup was amazing! The crispy pork belly with prawn tails and mash was amazing! The pork dumplings were amazing! It was all just fantastic. My other half enjoyed his birthday very much! Thank you greedy Buddha for delicious food and thank you Nigel for being so attentive and adding to our experience!
Warren
The "Ducking fantastic platter" is so delicious I ordered it twice! It really is "Ducking Fantastic ". The menu is varied, the service is excellent, and the decor is nice

Greedy Buddha has just added sushi to their menu, and I was lucky enough to get to go to the preview lunch last Friday.
Greedy Buddha has a great deck, and it's the perfect place to spend a sunny Friday afternoon overlooking Gateway. We were welcomed with a rose and cucumber G&T - fresh, delicious and very pretty - and there was live music (mellow and relaxed) which they plan to have on a regular basis.
Since this was a preview, we didn't choose from a menu but took advantage of a spectacular shared sushi platter for two. This was an off-menu platter, and a generous portion. My absolute favourite was rice paper "spring roll" (fresh, not fried) with a fresh and crispy tuna and veg filling - definitely worth a repeat visit. There were unusual options, like maki with a roasted tomato filling, and a crispy sushi taco. And the fabulous miso glazed salmon on a pea puree. I've had this as a main portion a couple of times, and it's always excellent.
The standard sushi menu includes two different platters for 1 or 2, a salmon platter and a low carb option for banters (plenty of salmon ngiri and the spring rolls and a couple of non-rice options.)
Excellent sushi in a wonderful setting. The service was also very good. All in all, a great afternoon and well worth a repeat visit.

The Greedy Buddha located at The Gateway Shopping Centre leaves much to be desired in terms of menu selection and taste. This is the first Thai place I've come across with no cashew nuts in their dishes. Very small selection and unauthentic. The rice is also not the best and lacks flavour (and so does the dishes) ... does not compare in comparison to Simply Asia, Orient, Wang Thai, etc.
Aavishkar Rooplall
Simply amazing staff ! They were friendly and hospitable. The food looked spectacular and was delicuous.

Will definitely come back for more.

Fantastic restaurant with quality food and good service. I love the attention to detail in the prep and the balance found in each meal. Definitely need to visit here more.

From Crispy Teriyaki Pork Belly and Prawn tails to flame grilled Lamb Chops; these exquisite dishes can be found at Greedy Buddha which is an Asian Fusion Restaurant known for being 1 of the top 10 South African restaurants according to 'Restaurant Week SA Spring 2016' situated on Palm Boulevard, Umhlanga Ridge, KZN, opposite one of South Africa's biggest shopping theatres - Gateway Mall

I was looking forward to eating here. Unfortunately I didn't enjoy my starter and my main. I had the pork and prawn wontons to start. They had no flavor and were very unpleasant. If it weren't for the seasame seed soy sauce I wouldn't have been able to stomach it alone. Underwhelmed.

On a recommendation, I booked The Greedy Buddha last night for dinner to try out this South East Asian inspired menu.

Service: We were served by Noxie, who was very attentive and helpful throughout the evening.
Ambiance: The interiors are tastefully done with comfortable booths and a lot of emphasis on key lighting features.
Food: We selected several dishes to share.
- Crystal ‘Har Gao’ Dumplings: Prawn, Calamari, and Coriander flavor.
- Crunchy Vegetable spring rolls with a red curry dip.
- Ducking Fantastic Platter
(that allows you to make your own wraps at the table):
Five spice confit duck, pancakes, Hoi Sin sauce, cucumber, and spring onion.
- Salmon Sashimi Plate: Citrus Cured Salmon Sashimi, Avo, Wasabi Mayo, Pickled Ginger, Coriander Pesto.
- Classic Pad Thai noodles with crispy chicken bites: Pad Thai dressing, Egg, Crushed Peanuts, Spring Onion, Asian Pesto and Coriander.

*The only dish that I didn't like.. the salmon sashimi. Sadly, the quality of this salmon was so poor that it is one of the most chewy salmon sashimi dishes that I have eaten in quite some time. Despite it being a small dish, I actually left quite a bit of the salmon without eating it.

*Recommendation: The Greedy Buddha is one of the few restaurants that gives you a free dinner on your birthday whether you decide to eat alone or bring a table of friends and family, so its definitely a wonderful excuse to give it a try if you'd like to celebrate your birthday with Asian inspiration.

For more, find me on Instagram, Facebook & Twitter: LaurasWorldza

What an amazing place, food is fantastic, waiters are fantastic! Definately a place to visit! Well done! I now have to "roll" myself back to the hotel.

The tasting menu is a must! With good food and amazing service my wife's birthday lunch was definitely in my opinion a huge success. I am very pleased

This was a convenient choice based on our hotel location but we were very delighted with the food and experience. Tried the Tapas tasting set menu which was oddly setup for two people but delicious and unique.
Shahir Chundra
We tried the deluxe tasting menu and honestly I have to say that was impeccable. The food just kept on coming and whilst we sipped delicious cocktails each course outdid the last.

Our selection :
Red Thai soup - espresso serving
Crystal Gao - prawn and calamari
Salmon Sashimi
Duck pancakes
Tempura Prawn tails
Pork belly with smoked potato purĂŠe
Lamb ribs slow roasted
Chocolate brownie

Our waiter Captain was really friendly, entertaining and professional. Great service.
We really felt like greedy little (or big) Buddha's by the end of the night.
Abi Glover
Had a friends birthday here. Booked for 7 but got a table for 5. Love the atmosphere and vibe. Captain was a really good waiter. I did however have a very disappointing meal which was the falafel wrap. I was choosing between the pad Thai and the falafel wrap - the waiter advised the latter. It was so spicy and hot which I was not aware of- I am sensitive to extremely spicy foods. Love the vibe but would have like more guidance in the selection of meals

Tried this place on a whim in December and were greeted by half price cocktails and an amazing set menu. Took friends there again and were not disappointed, great food again with the duck platter and various ramen. Went again this month and was absolutely mad for the steamed buns. Awesome stuff, great place!

Another stunning night out in Umhlanga. We arrived to a welcoming group that assisted us with a table. The waitress and all round service team was amazing, they were tentative, our glasses were never empty and the meals were timed perfectly. Our waitress gave us such awesome suggestions, and helped us get the best of an awesome menu we could not fault one meal. The manager also suggested an amazing wine and the night was perfect. We decided to go for the tapas platter and wow was there a lot of food. We started with a delicious proem soup and duck dim sums, and the chicken and chili won tons. They were delicious. We then had the choice of tap ash and decided to go for the sesame seed toasted calamari and prawn, the crispy roasted pork belly and the duck wrap. Also all device the spicy sauce for the duck was especially delicious. At this stage we so full and still had to make space for their delicious noodles with duck. As well as desserts while the crème brÝlÊe was great the citrus and coconut parfait was out of this world . A absolutely awesome night out.

The Greedy Buddha is an upmarket Asian inspired restaurant situated directly across gateway's Palm boulevard. The Location is great , and the ambiance at night is incredible with their classy lighting and decor. The food was pretty average overall.I enjoyed the lamb pot stickers, the chicken sliders were average. The red Dragon sauce was disappointing I expected it to be a little spicy but it wasn't.The crispy pork belly was cooked perfectly and the potato mousse was great.I had a buddha colada and a pimms cup to drink, the buddha colada was really thick and upsetting and not at all fruity. The pimms cup was good but didn't taste a good as Hudson's pimms cup.For the price range the food is definitely not up to standard.
Marvin Long
The food is average, the cocktails reasonable, the sun was shining brightly but the insane elevator type music that chimed on and on was off the chain.. made my afternoon!!!
Sheryl
Friendly staff and well- presented Asian cuisine. I highly recommend the chocolate brownie which was so decadent. However, though the won-tons lacked flavor and small relative to pricing.

Olivia Kitchen
Outstanding service, staff really go out of their way to make your night enjoyable. Food was delicious! Big portions at good prices. Will return
Samantha Jones
Greedy Buddha never disappoints! Amazing food - the pork belly is too die for! Will definitely be coming back soon! Recommend this place to everyone! It is a must try!

I visited this restaurant last night with a group of mates, to celebrate a special occasion.

Situated in Umhlanga out of the noise and bustle of Gateway, this pretty little gem blew me away with amazing service, good pricing (check out their cocktail special every day from 4pm-6pm), and delicious food.

The waiters were friendly and welcoming on arrival, and immediately got to work helping us set up the table. The restaurant is accommodating enough to allow guests to bring in table decorations, and a bottle of fizz (with a corkage fee off course).

We started with a round of half priced cocktails. The Chocolate Orange is deceptively strong, but nonetheless delicious, the rest of the table tried the Tom Yam Siam cocktail and described it as alcoholic with a hint of green curry.

For food we ordered an array of starters to pick at. The tempura vegetables stand out in my mind. To achieve a perfect tempura batter is a ball ache, and this was perfect. The chicken roasted garlic and chilli won tons followed a close second, they are not joking about the chilli part- be prepared. We also ordered butternut, feta and chilli wontons which were ok, duck and coriander springrolls (these come in a serving of 2 springrolls, not great for sharing), and Szechwan chili hallumi bites which are deep fried and gooey.

A combination of good food, yummy cocktails, and a fresh young atmosphere makes The Greedy Buddha a winner in my eyes!
Kiren Jagannath
Amazing Atmosphere. The hostess was very friendly. However the service was extremely extremely slow and the waitor abit incompetent. The food order was incorrect and I was forced to eat what I was served because it would have taken forever for them to make the right order. The starter (mushrooms) was delicious and the main was very bland and not tasty at all (bang bang noodles with veg). My friend and I took away our meals, and she realized only when she got home that she was served prawn instead of chicken in her meal. Would go again but would order with caution to avoid disappointment again.
Brooke
A fantastic spot with great atmosphere. If you sit outside under all the twinkle lights it a a romantic spot for two.
The price is not exactly right in comparison with other similar restaurants, but the food is of good quality and the service gave us the perfect amount of attention. If you are looking to indulge your craving for some Asian cuisine and delicious cocktails, give this place a try and see for yourself.
Shahil Juggernath
Without a doubt, this is the best restaurant in Durban.

The thing is, you will need to enjoy South-East Asian cuisine for that orgasmic experience.

But I think the 7 spice mushrooms or that divine pork belly could win you over even if you're not a fan of that type of food.

It's best to try out the tasting menu which gives you WAY too much food for two people.

Make sure you get the duck. It's oh so flavoursome with a richness that lingers.

It's the same with the best dish I had - the pork belly. It's so rich! It's that type of fish you need to savour over a really long period of time. Every bite shuts out the outside world for those few moments.

And you're happy. You end up so happy!

Again - if you are fussy, some of these flavours and the intenseness of the flavour may not be to your liking. But if you love fine dining and want it in a highly accessible environment, this is the best place to do it.

Don't visit Durban without doing this place. You owe your tastebuds that much!
Meryn Orlik
Fabulous! Highly recommend the duck, was delicious. Big ups to Kondo for being a fantastic host, entertaining and super friendly! In fact all the staff are great. Good place to watch the hustle and bustle. There is just one gripe, the bathrooms were dirty with multiple toilet rolls at varying stages of use piled on the back. Yuk! Kind of makes one wonder as to the state of the kitchen...

My dad and I went for a quick bite to eat at Greedy Buddah. The menu is quite substantial, we had difficulty choosing what to have, it all sounded delicious. We ended up having the prawn wonton and pork potsticker dumplings to start, which were juicy and very tasty. For mains we both went for the Bang Bang noodle dish - I chose the duck and my dad had the pork belly. My meal was unbelievably, amazingly delicious. Some of the best food I've eaten in a while, honestly. A little bit of the duck skin wasn't rendered down quite as much as I would've liked; it was a bit gooey and fatty, but other parts were crispy and divine. I savoured every mouthful. I tasted a bite of my dads pork belly and it was also lovely, very juicy. The portions are also very big, I was on the verge of bursting by the time I had finished my meal.

The restaurant itself is in a beautiful setting. Service wise, it could've been better. Our waitress was friendly but didn't seem too clued up on things - when I asked for a Pimms cocktail she looked quite confused. The food also took longer to come out than I expected, since it was quite late in the evening and the restaurant wasn't very busy.

Overall, a lovely dinner - I'd definitely come back!
Gert Visser
Exceptional Asian cuisine, great service! What a surprise whilst the rest of the circa 30 restaurants at Gateway are mostly average franchise stores. Loved it - tasting menu the way to go.
Stephanie Samynaden
Been wanting to dine at Greedy Buddha for ever. Finally got the chance yesterday. One word - AMAZING! The Salmon Sashimi plate is to die for. Steamed won tons, so good, with just a hint of chilli. Slow cooked lamb ribs, just fall off the bone. The desserts are on another level! Best of all, half price cocktails!! Hands down, the best cocktails I have ever had. The service was spot on. Will definatly be going back!

Visited The Greedy Buddha in Umhlanga today for my mom's pre-birthday lunch and was pleased beyond expectation 👏🏼

I currently reside in Johannesburg and I have been wanting to visit The Greedy Buddha for months.
Viewing the menu on Zomato got me excited enough and to my surprise I was not disappointed today.

For starters we had the:
• Twice cooked pork spare ribs in a sticky barbecue sauce
• Crispy roasted pork belly with smoked potato mousse and apple and teriyaki glaze
• Chicken, garlic, and chili won tons.

Mains:
• Teriyaki wings
• Beef rump with confit baby onions, carrot purée and roasted wild mushroom cream
• Crispy chicken breasts in a Thai red curry sauce with egg fried rice

Dessert:
• Citrus and coconut parfait
• Chili and lime Panna cotta

Sounds exquisite?
It was.
The plating was beautiful.
The flavors were incredible and perfectly balanced.
The rump was cooked to perfection.
Every mouthful was an experience.

EVERYTHING you eat at this restaurant is made from scratch.

Durban lacks innovative and quality restaurants such as The Greedy Buddha.
Definitely the best Thai restaurant I have visited and probably one of the best restaurants in Durban 👆🏻

Staff were friendly and attentive, the restaurant is beautiful, food price is reasonable, and the ambiance relaxed yet inviting.

Compliments to the head chef Vinolan for being a wonderful host and having excellent customer service.

I cannot wait to be back here during my next trip to Durbs to try the tasting menu!
Rolf Schluep
A must do if you're in the Umhlanga area! The tasting tour is a great way to get a feel for the food if you're not sure right off the bat. Food is really great and keeps things fresh👍🏼.service was great and it's no wonder this spot is busy most night.
Londiwe Mkhize
This is a cool spot right opposite Gateway. The restaurant is beautiful from the balcony. My family and I ordered a variety of things including tapas and mains. The food was really delicious. Everything from the dimsum, salmon plate and tempura prawns. I would definitely come here again.
Tamara Reddy
Such an amazing dining experience. The restaurant is absolutely beautiful and the service received was wonderful - Thank you to our waiter Nigel. The tapas were delicious. My favourite has to be the Ducking Fantastic Platter. On a busy Saturday it is difficult to order the tasting menu if you are with a large table, so I will be visiting again on date night for their tasting menu. Head Chef Vernolon Reddy makes sure he serves out only the best dishes. Their cocktails are pretty delicious too
Sarah
What a stunning restaurant serving Asian inspired dishes. Efficient and friendly staff. Do order the tasting menu giving you the opportunity to taste a variety of the delicious dishes on offer!

Great food.. Great atmosphere. Amazing service. Half price cocktails. Tapas tasting menu a must for first timers... Very friendly staff, head chef( Vernolon Lee Reddy) made some good suggestions with the way items should be ordered in order to minimize waiting time on meals...
My Husband n I spent almost 3 hours there, n enjoyed every minute of it. Definitely looking forward to our next visit to Greedy Buddha...
Yashnira Sampathmany
We had an amazing time at this restaurant.. It's super pretty at night and the food is amazing.. Worth the wait.. Our waiter, Kumar, was the best he even got the chef to make an old favorite of mine that was taken of the menu ..Great service.. The Malaysian bang bang noodles is delicious.. Topped with chicken and prawn.. A great night with great food will definitely go back..
Arrie
I've been to The Greedy Buddha three times now and each time the service and food have been amazing. Their duck pancakes are a can't miss menu item and their fillet steak is one of the best I've had in Durban, always cooked exactly according to order 💯
Candice
The fairy lights from the outside attracted us to this restaurant. When we arrived, the restaurant was dimly lit which added to the intimate and relaxing setting.

The waiter, Nigel, was a lovely host. It is very seldom you meet an energetic and passionate waiter who provides good service. He is sure to bring in regular clients to the establishment.

The restaurant is experimental and fusion. I am impressed with their selection of vegetarian dishes. We ordered a mushroom starter and I was pleasantly surprised with the combination of bits pineapple with creamed avocado to compliment the mushrooms.

The mains were generously portioned and hearty. I enjoyed the duck noodle dish and the pork belly dish. Good value for money too.

Definitely worth trying out when in Durban on a holiday 😊

Excellent food, service and the location.A great place to chill with a great view of the walkway of gateway shopping mall. The food is really nice, not much spicy though. Its prepared with real passion and the tops was the service.
Candice
First time at Greedy Buddha, everything was amazing- food tastes so good. Excellent service! And the price so worth it, my main meal cost me R80!!!! Try them, you won't regret it.
Adriel
An interesting and trendy Asian fusion restaurant situated next to Gateway. Firstly I have to say that the service was excellent, our waiter was both friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. We had the tempura brinjal and cripsy pork belly for starters, which were definite winners(the smoked potato mousse is real good). For mains we both had noodle dishes which weren't as good as the starters , and the portion sizes were a bit overwhelmingly. The waiter did inform us thou that this is under review. Be advised the menu posted on Zomato is out of date.
Gigliola Conte-Patel
I had lunch here on a Friday afternoon. It was quiet but they were running a lunch special and we received a R70 discount on a R300 bill which was a great surprise. The service was good and the food offered great value as the portion sizes were big. The food is Asian so if you're a fan try it our.
Jason
Had amazing duck and my wife's phad Thai was awesome. Unfortunately I was served dim sum with raw pork inside which ruined the night. they did redo them but by then was scared to actually eat them
Kenosi Buzzkill Matsebatlela
All sugar coating aside, I really just wanted to try this place out for its epic name. Yes, my taste buds are that shallow.

It was a little tricky finding the place, but when we did it made a great impression. The whole restaurant is well decorated and the atmosphere is cool, the kind of cool that makes you want to wear sunglasses inside. Our waitress was super cheery and eager to help, she gave us a full run down of how the menu works. Although, we learned just how popular her cheeriness was as we didn't see much of her after ordering.

We decided to try the tapas tour (there were 2 of us) and while I was skeptical of how filling the whole affair would be, I'm glad to say I was proved wrong.Starters: Chefs soup of the day (butternut soup). It wasn't great, the chilli overpowered any other flavour. We chased that down with shots (went down a treat). Then we had: Beef dim sum (too spicy), pork wantons (more like a pork sausage wrapped in pastry), Ducking fantastic (good stuff), sesame crusted prawn and calamari toasties (good stuff) and the crispy roasted pork belly (show stopper). Then we had the vermicelli noodles as a main with the chicken topping (the chicken ruined the noodles, again way too much chilli) and lastly a chocolate brownie. I don't usually do desserts in restaurants but this brownie was everything (even the next day). Overall it was a mixed bag, I would say stay away from anything with chilli on the menu, someone has a heavy hand. I would eat there again just because the food was an experience.

After reading amazing reviews and people suggesting The Greedy Buddha I was unbelievably dissatisfied with this restaurant :( went for dinner with friends at 7pm and we were seated outside. We ordered our meals at 8pm but only received our main meals at 9:45 pm. It surely doesn't take that long for noodles??? Starters were an absolute let down as well! The famous peking duck was dry and tasteless, the pancakes were so hard that you could crack them. The manager kept apologising but things didn't get better at all. It started to pour and we had to move ourselves to another table. Our bill was charged incorrectly and we didn't even stay for dessert. Hopefully it was just an off night for the Greedy Buddha, would love to come back and experience the things I have read about.

Dont know when last we waited 2 hours for a meal, can you? The place is really poor when it came to service. The food was good but not worth waiting for 2 hours. To add to insult, they added extra items to our bill, over R150 extra. I hope they get their act in order.

I have dined at the Greedy Buddha during the past Sunday and I was certainly overwhelmed by the excellent service and meals. The price range is very affordable with a variety of delicious options to choose from. Highly recommended☺

The Greedy Buddha is one of my favorite restaurants so I'm reluctant to critical but do so in the hope that management will address. I had lunch there yesterday with a group of friends. Although our waitress was lovely and friendly - the drinks should have been served first even though we did order them after our food order. The cutlery, chopsticks and sauces should have been on the table before the meal arrived. The pork wontons, calamari and red lentils were delicious. Some were put off by the smell of the wontons - but they tasted good. The crispy duck pancakes looked a little dry. The bathroom was an absolute disaster. Very off putting but so easy to get right.
The wine list is limited but well chosen - I would like to see another reasonably priced Sauvignon Blanc wine - maybe Anura? Both Springfield Life from Stone and Anura Chardonnay are great choices. This is such a lovely venue and I look forward to going back soon.
Absolutely brilliant! If you want great service with a smile, food that is delicious and a contemporary atmosphere...you need to come here.

Limited wine selection...but had a great Pinot noir with our tasting menu! Just brilliant! I will be back!

After having walked around the Gateway of hell, I think we found heaven at The Greedy Buddha. The food was incredible... I had a Vietnamese salad with prawns which was refreshing in the heat, and the boyfriend had fried noodles with duck. I wish I had been hungrier as there were so many dishes I wanted to try. The staff were lovely, very friendly and efficient. The deck was lit up with fairy lights.. You can't have too many fairy lights as far as I'm concerned!

What a great find!!!! Absolute elegance atmosphere and the food to die for! The pork belly was out of this world and the egg fried rice was some of the best. Will return again and again.

Great vegetarian selection!... Even the carnivores enjoyed their food. Enjoyed the variety if started and the Singapore noodles- flavour in each mouthful......

So after the above awesome review! We ordered at 12.55 it's now 15.10 still no food! Yes I know it's Mother's Day... But surely you knew that too. I would comment on the food.... But I haven't eaten any yet!

After reading the reviews, I was a bit disappointed with this place.

Service was excellent but food was a bit of a let down.

The crispy pork belly with potato purĂŠe was excellent but I think the portion size was suitable for a main course.
The wontons were okay - nothing to ride home about.
Was highly disappointed with their noodles - I expected them to be chilli like their menu states but instead they were very bland can't say the same for the duck that came with it though, it was made perfectly.
Their fried rice was good and quite flavourful.
What was a let down about their menu was their failure to state that their chicken breasts were fried/crispy - they came out looking like nuggets; something we wouldn't have opted for if we had known.

Would love to come back. I hope they make a few changes to their menu and their delivery of it.

The menu has changed as well as presentation. It's now downgraded from fine dining to bistro. I preferred it being fine dining, nothing like a paper serviette (napkin) to ruin a otherwise perfect date night. Our waitress didn't know what lime cordial was but the manage made up for her shortcomings. EXCELLENT food, great vibe. But PLEASE bring back fine dining, at least in the evenings.

Huge Greedy Buddha fan from their original store in Durban North! My personal favorites are the Lamb and Chilli potstickers and Duck pancakes. The food is always fresh and delicious!

What an awsome evening with great service and flavours that burst in you mouth. From the 5 spice dim sum starters, bang bang sweet pork noodle and crispy pork salad to the vanilla cream Bruce and the brownies never the less the awsome chocolate block wine to compliment it all. What's more to say. We will be back. Well done.

Yum yum yum! I love Asian good and The Greedy Buddha has such a yummy selection. Always fun to eat with chopsticks and order bits and pieces. Don't usually need to book so if you're hungry - just a walk in!

Tapas tasting menu is amazing, what a taste adventure! At first it seems like the food is not going to be enough, but it keeps on coming and coming, sesame toast is a must. Recommend that u keep track of the courses served as they missed some and had to be reminded!

Let me just state, I will come back to this place any time! The service is amazing, the food excellent and the wine menu better than most in the area!

I find this to be a very average restaurant. I was with a group of people and we tried their tasting menu and for some reason this was the longest meal of my life. It baffles me that it took them 4 hours to serve a ' tasting' menu. When its a tasting menu and portions are small the idea is to serve quick not with a massive lag inbetween so your diners are starving and then nibble on minuscule portions.

We were a very large table but that shouldn't be an excuse specially when they knew we were coming. I think unfortunately the kitchen had an off day but it still sours my experience. With regard to the food I find it to be alright but nothing to really rave or write home about. If I came here I'd opt for something from their menu instead of the set meal which takes forever.

My review is a little overdue - I went to the old location just prior to them moving & then they vanished from Zomato for a few weeks - cannot comment on new location but wanted to review nonetheless ! We arrived for dinner about 7.30 and were told they were closing early due to load shedding - not sure if we looked particularly crestfallen but the manageress said we were welcome to stay as long as we ordered quickly so that they could cook before the lights went out. We did and the food - based on tasting and sharing - was excellent & included ribs, pork and chicken. All beautifully presented with wonderful aromas and really unexpected , delicious tastes. The rain came down and flooded some of the restaurant - it is testament to the great food & excellent service that everyone just moved into the parking area and continued their meals - everyone had a brilliant time & the power was off for less than 30 mins ! Hope they have s better spot now but definitely recommend if you looking for evening with friends .. Also they shared their drinks with next door which was a little odd but worked - sure that no longer the case!

Love the new revamp at Gateway in Umhlanga. The pork belly is the best I have ever eaten and their French take on Asian ingredients is fantastic!
