Review Adega Restaurant - Umhlanga Rocks

Enjoyed our late lunch, went in a group ordered a combination of steak and seafood. Everything was good, no complaints.

Personally no complaints. I've had the lamb chops. They were done the way I like them with a generous portion of chips. My friend didn't enjoy her prawn stuffed Calamari. But overall a good experience. 👍

Had a lovely team lunch here this afternoon. The staff were brilliant. We had a group of 20 people and the orders ranged from starters to mains and dessert and different drinks and there were no mix ups. Our waiters were spot on with all the orders and so friendly and ready to assist us. The meals were absolutely divine! Very healthy portion sizes as you can see from the photos below. See photo labels for descriptions of each dish. A must visit in my opinion for a really hearty delicious meal with excellent service! Superb Adega Gateway! Keep it up 👌🏼

Must visit restaurant. Their LM style chicken is simply out of the world. Whenever we are in Durban we ensure to have our maximum meals from here.

Great service, great food, platters are good value for money. Indeed you get what you pay for. Team Adega keep doing what you're doing. Was there on the 1st of August I highly recommend trying the Summer sizzler! Deliciously generous portions!

It has been a while since we ate at Adega, and there might have been a few tweaks on the menu, but the food still tastes great! We tried their Chicken pasta, which was creamy, with the option of linguine or penne pasta, & the Chicken strips & rice, it was marinated in a slightly spice sauce and you have a choice between the chips or the rice. We did ask if they do half chips and half rice, and our waiter said unfortunately not. I would suggest that a half & half on the sides, could be added in as an option. Budget for two people +-R300.

The menu is very unprofessional as it has advertisements in there which clutters it .The garlic rolls and tempura prawns were mediocre and the halloumi cheese starter was great . The salaad was served with poor effort and a very low quality of lettuce drawning in water . The steak was tender was tender and pleasing . The chicken pasta was better then the prawn pasta The prawns, chicken and fish in hot were rich and tasty I preferred it over the mild .

Delicious food and generous portions. Ideal Halal family restaurant. Gateway Mall has ample parking, so parking is definitely not a problem.

The food here is always awesome! Their prawn and chicken dishes are to die for.

Best seafood restaurant by far! Food was always fresh. I love the sauce! But the chicken and seafood are too be reckoned with! Can't wait for my next visit when I come down to Durbz.

Adega at Gateway Theater of Shopping is an excellent dining destination that truly stands out in terms of its menu, atmosphere, and service. From the moment you enter the restaurant, you are greeted with warm smiles, exceptional service, and a luxurious yet comfortable ambiance that immediately puts you at ease. The menu is extensive and features a range of dishes, from classic favorites to more innovative and creative options. The quality of the food is top-notch, with every dish bursting with flavor and expertly prepared. The ingredients are fresh and locally sourced, which is evident in every bite. The service at Adega is also excellent. The staff is attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable about the menu, always happy to provide recommendations or answer any questions you may have. The attention to detail and level of care put into every aspect of the dining experience is truly impressive. One dish that particularly stood out to me was the Portuguese-style grilled prawns. The prawns were perfectly cooked and seasoned, with a smoky flavor that was simply mouth-watering. The presentation was also beautiful, making it a feast for both the eyes and the taste buds. Another standout dish was the Espetada, a traditional Portuguese dish featuring grilled meat skewers served with garlic butter and chips. The meat was tender and flavorful, and the garlic butter added a rich and savory touch that took the dish to the next level. In addition to the exceptional food and service, the atmosphere at Adega is also noteworthy. The restaurant is spacious and elegantly decorated, with comfortable seating and ample lighting that creates a warm and inviting ambiance. Overall, Adega at Gateway Theater of Shopping is a must-visit for anyone looking for a memorable dining experience. The food, service, and atmosphere are all exceptional and truly set this restaurant apart from others in the area. Whether you're looking for a romantic night out or a celebration with friends and family, Adega is the perfect choice.

What a lovely atmosphere for a weekday lunch time treat. Efficient and great service and food. Their chicken is amazing. Highly recommend.

Food was great, service was decent, it is a bit pricey compared to other nearby restaurants and theres a fixed 10% service added after the meal but the food portion is quite large and makes up for it.

Very tasty food. Excellent service.

The seafood platter was absolutely divine, it was so creamy and tasty. The best I’ve had really and I will definitely visit Adega again.

Lazy weekend lunch. The waiter was insisting on one of the special platters. Since we had heavy breakfast we went for Prawns Nacional and Surf and Turf. The prawns was perfectly cooked with right amount of spice. The Surf and Turf was good and the steak was done just right

Went down to Adega for some prawns so we decided to get a platter for two and a seafood pasta that was extremely delicious...A big ups to Adega Gateway 👌
Nikisha
Seafood platters was super fresh and a must order, portion sizes was beyond what we expected. Staff are super friendly and fast aswell. Very neat and tidy restaurant.
SaltyBaes
A halaal friendly family restaurant. We had the seafood platter for 2 which came with a half portion of panga fish, calamari, 8 prawns and half a baby chicken. The seafood and chicken were perfectly cooked and flavoured but may be a bit too rich for some. The atmosphere could do with much improvement and is definitely not recommended for a romantic dinner out but could easily pass for a family outing.

Adega isn't for everyone like me 😂 I visit adega once a year or once in two years if i have to! The sauce basting isnt Portuguese and is more creamy and oily. Too much cream and oil spoils the flavour to the chicken and prawns. I love their pina colada and the veg sides which are not creamy except for the spinach. They serve the worst cheese and garlic roll because the rolls are always firm and the greasy cheese isn't nice. Some items are over priced. I love the in house bread they serve with butter 👍

After a long hard day of shopping I was looking forward to a relaxing and heart warming meal. My sis in law suggested Adega and as I haven’t been to any of their branches I thought I’d give it a try.

This restaurant is located at the Gateway Mall and has seating both inside and outside. It was a bit nippy so we decided to sit inside. The overall appearance is clean and neat. The lighting is a bit too bright making everything look a bit clinical.

There is a large variety of dishes on the menu and it is reasonably priced. The average price per person was R250.00. The staff was efficient and attentive. I would have tipped more for service had they not been presumptuous enough to already add 10% to the bill. I personally don’t appreciate this practice.

The food was very good and everyone got exactly what they ordered and what they expected. Their hot chili sauce is devilish😅. It is definitely not for the faint hearted. Stay away unless you wish to burn off your tastebuds.

There are 2 reasons why I’m giving this restaurant only 4 stars. Something about the way the place looked, the atmosphere and the way all the different dishes looked so similar made me feel like I was in a Stepford movie. Even though my food was cooked perfectly I couldn’t relax enough to enjoy it. I took most of my food home and later enjoyed it throughly in front of the tv.

I may eat there again because the food was good but I will not be going there with a date.

Value for money.😊

The restaurant was bit busy on the day, but i liked how family-oriented it was.

There's 1 word to describe the food: CREAMY😋❤ Nom Nom!! I was in Heaven!!😊

I liked how their menu is in the form of a magazine- very original.💯
I also thought it was quite thoughtful that they put curry on the side, and thus choose how you guys wish to eat their dishes.💯

I wish their cocktails were alcoholic as they were quite sweet. A bit TOO sweet actually.🚫

If I could change something, it would probably be how their shellfish is sold per kg. The price of the dish then becomes too expensive and one wasn't necessarily wanting to eat a kilo of shellfish. It doesn't make sense.😭

Overall, I was a happy Chap. Would definitely return!!😋🔥✊

Love their Spring Chicken.. Tastes Amazing!! With that Extra Hot Sauce on the side😋😋 The Cheesy Garlic Bread is really good as well as the Creamy Vegetables. Not badly priced at all..
Really worth it👍
Unfortunately got the stomach flu after eating at this Adegas. Not sure if it was the chicken or prawns. It was very rich compared to what my family and I usually eat. Otherwise I did enjoy the food.

Good service- waiters are very friendly and ready to help. Great food-Calamari and prawns are cooked to perfection and tasty. Nice chill out spot

Disappointing place... food is below average and very bland ... service is slow and generally not good since the waiter wasn't very clued up on the menu but that could possibly be just the one waiter , not sure of the others ... can't say I'd go back in a hurry ...

It doesn't get worse than this place.
I mean, Managment is horrible, the food is grotesque. The staff tried to the best of their abilities to be helpful.
DO NOT EVER GO TO THIS PLACE. THEY DONT HAVE REAL PORTUGUESE FOOD ( excuse the caps lock, just making a point)

Tips are compulsory but not deserved. Dishes were cold, service was colder. No value for money. Ambience has degenerated. Not how we remember it to be when Junaid was around.

Such a wonderful spot for either a casual or formal meal.

The seafood classic options are available here, from fishy platter(s) to sushi. Food quality was rather exceptional, i was completely satisfied and stuffed.

We had the unfortunate luck of getting a vexatious waiter who not only forgetful, but chose our eating time to sweep and pick up dirt. The last time we visited it was much better. However, the service all round seemed adequate.

Those in the gateway region should pay a visit, I know I'll be returning :)

Good for quick, budget meals. No expectations of fine dining. However there is a silver lining in the variety of delicious mocktails. A decor revamp would be good!
Farhanaa83
Great food. Cramped venue. Not the best service when they're busy. The prawn and chicken pastas are absolutely divine though, and they have a wide variety of tasty mocktails.

Worst Adega experience I've ever had. Food was horrible. Check the two pictures of what I ordered vs what I got. Grilled chicken turned into oily butter chicken... please remove the name as this is not Portuguese style food!

Been a few times. Chicken is my favorite. Staff alittle bit slow at times. Greek salad is always fresh. The dipping sauce that comes with the bread is very spicy and hot. Wish they turn it down slightly

After trawling this large expanse that is Gateway, we decided to visit this restaurant after having good experience in the Fordsburg (Johannesburg) branch. We were not disappointed. The garlic roll was tasty. We had the LM chicken. The flavour was great. However the chicken itself was not so fresh. The decor was nice. Would visit here again.

A little hesitant at first because of the bad reviews I had read about this place. But to my surprise the service was quick and efficient. The food was absolutely delicious and I would definitely go back.

Not a place to be! Overpriced and food is no good ! Too much oil and chicken was undercooked! Yes! Undercooked! Chicken! How can one manage to undercook a chicken! Never coming back to this one!

Slightly above average food (unlike other Adegas), mediocre service and a cramped venue. Place seemed understaffed (for midday Saturday) and waitrons aren't the sharpest. Doesn't make sense considering the extravagant price (as per Adega standard). This one is a halaal restaurant so NO ALCOHOL IS served. Definitely not for me; I'd rather spend half as much, and go to the John Dory's across the way.

Have been here the third time to check y is it so busy and not a great place for me.Food is not that great, i jad calamari n kingklip but both were not well cooked since it was frozen,The sauce was not that great to talk abiut, the service is ok but not worth for tge price you pay for the food

Adega is more pricey than your usual family restaurant but the food is not always worth it. The best thing I've had was the chicken. It has that unique Portuguese flavor and spice. But everything else is normal. Not a must try.

The restaurant was busy with what looked like a function but service levels did not drop. The food came quickly and was well presented. Tasted very good as usual. Opted for the usual prawn pasta which was delicious, once again. Service was excellent as well.

We were strolling around in Umhlanga, looking for a nice restaurant and thought it best to look out for a place where it seems the locals are hanging out. Adega seemed like the best restaurant, as the vibe was fabulous and the restaurant was very busy. However, the food was a great disappointment: the portions were so small that we had to stop for take-aways on our way home, and it was definitely not a cheap experience. I will not recommend this restaurant at all.

This has to be my favourite Adega. While it's halaal & does not serve alcohol, the food we eat is flavoursome. We generally go for the platter with chicken & prawns that can serve four...ideally size for a family to share. The chicken, made hot, is delicious with the flavour going right to the bone of the chicken. Really good!
I recently went back to Adega and I noticed that serviettes have been changed! I don't know if management actually paid heed to my zomato review but I'm very pleased :-D with the food as well so I'm upping my rating from 3.0 to 3.5
-------------------------------------------------------------
I tried the tempura prawns as a starter. The prawns were really succulent with a crisp coating. I had the grilled chicken as a main and the sauce it comes in is divine.
A really nice touch is the complimentary bread basket and periperi sauce.

The setup of the restaurant is quite average and maybe a little more attention should be paid on the little things like serviettes and tablecloths.
Muhammad Muneeb
I tried a combo meal and it was good that is why 3 marks for the food cause it was lovely but the staff looks like working some where on a public road. Not professional at all. Location is good.

My sister and I decided to try Adega since it was always busy. We ordered our food which was average. Serve was disappointing and the tip was included in the bill. The prices are not worth it. I was very disappointed with the experience.

A Halaal Portuguese restaurant? How do you cook with no red wine?

Sat down, waiter told us there was no beer or wine at all - we got up and left.
Mohammed Kharva
very pricey luxury eating experience i think its much more than 200 for 2 people ..service is good food is good but its not a weekly food place ..nice moktails
Jamie Chetty
Had the 500g T-bone steak with veggies, passable , enjoyed the veggies more than the steak, good service though, will be back to try other stuff on their vast menu
Imraan Salajee
Not impressed with the service or the quality of the food been here before seriously lacking the taste and quality won't be going back soon

The worst experience in a long time, it's sad to see that Adega in Umhlanga Village, is giving the chain such a bad name. We eventually left after 20 minutes, no menu's, table still dirty from previous guests.. Was looking forward to celebrate my birthday there... :( On departure we bumped into the Manager, told him we're not happy his answer, "... The remaining guests seems happy, and it's not his fault they only have one waitress" further had the audacity to say, we should have been patient their doing the best they can
Yusuf Khan
Always enjoy the food at Adega and do believe they have the best Portuguese chicken in Durban by it's flavour and succulence.the heat rating on it also sits very high compared to many:).also their seafood is a force to be reckoned with.
The Curious Introvert
Visited this restaurant for my boyfriends birthday. Ordered a prawn pasta, was very average. The prawns were rubbery and overcooked. Service was good though. Been to the branch in Fordsburg and the food was amazing. The Umhlanga branch needs to learn a thing or two from its Fordsburg counterpart.
