Review Ben's On The Beach - Strand

We went to Ben's on the beach with our toddler. The waitress was so sweet to us. Very accommodating of our little one. We ordered the steak, lamb neck, and fish and chips for our daughter. The meal ended with a milk tart Panna cotta ;). The restaurant is across the beach. Such beautiful views! A must go if in Strand

Brilliant food, Brilliant service. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone that is looking for a lovely, warm, welcoming atmosphere to have breakfast, lunch or dinner. It definitely is on the beach.

Have not been to Ben's in years, it was a lovely evening, great food, fillet done perfectly and the sauce was amazing, friendly service, amazing view of the sea, lovely atmosphere. I'm looking forward to going back again soon.

Really good burgers, pleasant atmosphere and good value for what we spent. Bout R110 - R175 I got a crumbed chicken burger and my dad got a New york Burger, full steak meat mix patty. Regret being too full to try their desserts, looked really good! Will come again soon!

What a great chilled place with fantastic service. Full blown 5 star 🌟 rating for these guys. Very attentive service, smiles all around, decent pricing and fine meals. We'll done to the front of house and the kitchen. Keep up that standard 👏

Finally.... a quiet and calm place to eat dinner in peace. The food is very good and well priced. Excellent if you have particular dietary needs. There's soft lighting and the staff are attentive and professional. I'll definitely be going back soon

My husband and I celebrated our 46th wedding anniversary lunch today. Our waitress was outstanding and the food was exceptional. Thank you and we will certainly be back.
Meh. Can't quite wrap my head around this place. The food is fine, the service is okay, the drinks are a bit weak, the atmosphere is kind of stiff, and the decor is confusing. We arrived at 5pm and had a seat near the window, but were reminded (quite often) that we had to finish or move as they have the table reserved for 7pm, which we didn't mind. The lady at the table next to us was also reminded of this and was asked that she clear the table by 6.45pm. She had spent the entire afternoon there working on her laptop and raking up quite a bill, so I was annoyed for her part when she was asked at 6.10 if she would mind moving. Apart from the amazing view and the corkage option, I'm not too impressed with Ben's on the Beach.

After quite a few friends told us about the decline in quality after new management, I am happy to say that could not be further from the truth.

I always order the New York burger, and in December the patty was tiny in comparison to the bun, but today it was back to it's normal, bun size. The mushrooms were fresh and everything just tasted delicious. The table ordered the mushroom soup and peri-peri chicken livers as starters, both equally great. The mushroom soup is very filling.

For mains we had the classic burger, New York burger, Zanzibar chicken and Cowboy cut meat. Everything was freshly prepared and tasted delicious. For dessert we had the apple crumble, not your traditional apple crumble, but still very nice.

Lovely place and friendly staff. Ben's on the Beach remains our family's favourite restaurant.

My experience here was very good, our waitress (Megan) was super friendly and recited the specials upon taking our drinks so we had time to process the specials. I had the fillet with peppercorn sauce and mash potatoes. My fillet was 250g cooked perfectly to medium and the pepper sauce was also not too hot. The mash potatoes weren’t bad but I did expect better, was still enjoyable though. The view was 3 stars and would recommend. My dessert was split with a friend, we had New York Cheese Cake with lemon curd and a chocolate brownie with toffee sauce. They were both great but cheesecake was very rich. Also our table has at least ordered 25 coffees between all 13 of us.

I go there on a regular basis and find the Management always friendly and helpful. Was there last week and got a miserable waitress and had to ask for another who turned out to be great. Food is consistently good. Always have a steak and have never been disappointed. Booking recommended especially on weekends.

Food was excellent. The hake with the curry sauce was delicious, piri piri chicken falling off the bone, Turkish chicken had a lovely yoghurt based sauce and the grilled yellow tail was tasty too.
The great part was that the waitress knew the menu, the food and the wines and provided excellent service actually worthy of a tip.
Highly recommended.

We stumbled across this hidden gem by accident while cruising for a place to have dinner. We ended up going there twice. The manager made a plan to seat us even though we had made no reservation. The service was wonderful while the atmosphere still remained chilled beach type style but the food was equal to anything I have eaten in some of the best restaurants this country has to offer. Everything from the tempura, babotie samoosas to the most divine steaks was on offer and we made sure we tried it all. A big thumbs up for me for this local little gem

I have not been here in a few years and when I met a friend for lunch last week and we decided to have their 2 course special.
The service was good, and from what I've heard, consistently so. Staff were all very pleasant and friendly.
The meal as a whole was sadly not up to expectation. I chose the seafood soup starter but it was not available. Decided on chicken livers instead. The livers were done beautifully... not overcooked. The sauce could've done with a touch of chilli but as a stand-alone it was good. The very saucy dish was not accompanied by freshly baked crusty bread but rather regular toasted government bread, which I found under all the sauce...all soggy with zero crunch. I enjoy the texture difference between soft livers and good crusty bread. My friend's spanakopita springrolls lacked some flavour. Since it is not traditional spanakopita I would suggest adding some feta to the filling.
Our steaks were juicy and tender even though it seems that our orders were swapped around accidentally...I had his medium with my sauce and he seemed to have my medium rare with his sauce. No worries, we just swapped halfway through.
A few comments... the steaks were accompanied by a rather sweet tomato chutney which did not complement the dish at all. The pepper sauce was good and so was my old mans sauce but they completely covered the steaks, taking away from a really good quality sirloin. Maybe only cover half the steak? Or put sauce in a ramekin? Chips were not good...brown, soggy, limp, slightly oily. Spinach needed seasoning.
The chef should maybe play with his plating a bit.
Good coffee.
And sadly it seems that they are losing their view of the beach as the new wall grows...
Perfect!
I love this place. The food is magic.
Service has always been good and the view of course is something very special on its own.
I have been here a few times and recommend this to anyone.
Decent place for a weekend lunch. Food and drinks were good. Service was average, could be improved upon.

Still probably one of the better spots on the beach front.

Have been here twice over the last 6 months. Had chicken livers which i really loved, and then the tongue. Was prepared well and i really enjoyed it. The waitress was very friendly and helpfull. The window and booth seats are the best. For a romantic date i would suggest the booth. Also had the springbok shank here. Was really worth it.

Waitress was very friendly but the food was a big big let down. Hake was frozen (understandable due to reasons out of their control) and overcooked. Dry as can be. Will not be returning.

We went on a rainy, cold Sunday evening and was warmly welcomed. Always nice! First time at Ben's and vibe wise I must say it's a very cozy and warm place, nice music and I can see this place must be a winner on a Friday or Saturday night! Situated on beach road next to the beach.....so yes the view is awesome. Food and service was great and some interesting flavors I might add. Very reasonable pricing!

All in all a very good experience so we will be back. Thank you guys.

What a great experience. The service was impeccable and the waitress friendly and knowledgeable about the food. We had the Cowboy Cut and the Kentucky Steak as mains, and they were superb, as were the desserts and starters (I had a Gateaux Opera, which was very moreish). Portions were generous.

Pretty much you get what you would expect, decent service and good food at a good price. The view is nice too, right on strand beach. The burgers are quite good too. We return regularly.

If you find yourself looking for somewhere to have a meal at the Strand try this one. A friendly homely restaurant with a varied menu, good food and service. Situated right across the road from the beach and prices are very reasonable.

Really had a good meal here. Bobotie samoosa starter was great and big portions. Cowboy cut steak on the bone was perfectly prepared. Service was very good and food came quickly after ordering. Also very reasonably priced. Recommend you book in advance, it was packed the entire evening.

Very friendly staff and delicious food. Great value for money. Just remember to book because they are very busy and mostly fully booked. Def one of the gems of Strand

Food and service is really good. Would recommend this place.....! Saucy Sirloin with Old Man Sauce one of the best steak i had in a long time. Waiters friendly and hard working.

The venue is ideally situated on the beach front and the ambience is really great.

Even though we did not have a reservation, they could accomodate us. The menu on Zomato had some interesting dishes but they were unfortunately not on their menu any longer....

We could only enjoy some really nice starters, but no vegetarian main course available. The only other possibility was a greek salad.

The service was quite good. 😊

If they add some more possibilities, we will be back 😊😊😊

An absolutely wonderful culinary experience. Ben's is located in main beach road which makes for a nice after meal stroll on the beach.

Dishes are very well designed, expertly executed and delivers an amazing presentation and taste.

Fillets are prepared to the tee, side dishes are fresh and wholesome, and a an excellent wine list tops off the experience.

Wonderful service and attention to detail makes this little restaurant an awesome find in Strand.

One of the best restaurants I've ever tried. Every meal we ordered was absolutely delicious. The flavors were so perfectly balanced that we all struggled to describe the perfect mix of flavors. My chicken was so deliciously tender and the rib-eye steaks were truly a triumph. They even managed to make mushrooms a masterpiece. The service was great and there was so much attention to detail. We even got little chocolate truffles with our bill! The place was buzzing with energy and super busy. We will definitely be going back.

Ben's has a prime beachfront location and boasts a kitchen to match it. The service could have done with an extra pinch of friendliness but we were nonetheless seated and served in good time. The menu is interesting, well priced and varied enough to give you a decent range of options to choose from. The coffee, I'm not quite sure of the roast, was strong and tasteful. I tried the pork belly which was beautifully plated, well portioned and ultimately delicious. Following this first visit, I will certainly return. Ben's is my new go-to restaurant in the Strand/G-Bay area.

Situated right on the beachfront in Strand, Ben's On The Beach should definitely be on your bucket list. If you're looking for a place that will never disappoint, then Ben's is the place to be!

Where to start; their food is absolutely amazing..every single time I'm there. The service is very professional and you never wait too long for your order, even on a busy night. I had the cordon bleu mains (which was perfect and tasted amazing) and enjoyed it with a bottle of Diemersfontein pinotage. For dessert, their chocolate mousse is always a winner. Those of you who appreciate a good Irish coffee, I would recommend you try theirs.

All in all, if you're ever in the mood for a nice semi formal dinner, you know where to go.

Ben's is a great fine dining experience and I visit here every year for my birthday and always leave there feeling like I just won a million bucks.
Their meals are incredible!! Ben's offers affordable A La Carte or set menu options and believe me it is worth every cent.
The setting is gorgeous as it has a fantastic sea view and offers a very romantic feel. This gem is definitely worth a visit

Strand isn't renowned for their restaurants, so my expectation of Ben's was a 5 out of 10 when arriving. However after a round of starters, I knew this place was nowhere near a 5.

The 2 main meals that I tasted were up there with the best meals you would find in Cape Town. The lamb ribs were so tender and fell off the bone. The rib-eye? Winner of the night. Smokey flavour and an amazing mushroom sauce.

We were 14 diners and service was great, wine selection really good and the food, excellent.

Bill came to R280 a person including starter, mains, lots of wine shared and some coffees and a few shared desserts. Nothing wrong with that!

For my birthday this year I was treated to a taste bud tingling meal at Ben's. I cannot begin to describe how grateful I am to the friendly waitresses and the magicians in the kitchen. It truly is the sort of eatery that makes you feel like you're being warmly cuddled from all sides.

I'm an indecisive orderer - is that even a word? On my birthday, even more so. I have this ridiculous need to both try something new and stick to my all-time favourites. Foodie-related multiple personality disorder may actually be a thing. Instead of dealing with the agonizing process of deciding for ourselves, we asked the waitress for her recommendation. Instead of shrugging it off and pointing us in the direction of the specials board, she really took the time to give it some thought. We were given a fully detailed description of her personal favourite (Moroccan lamb ribs) and the dish she believes her customers order most often (Kentucky rib-eye with a Bourbon mushroom sauce). She went so far as to ask her fellow waitresses for their opinions too. We found ourselves in the midst of a voting process much more exciting than general elections.

In the end we opted for a halloumi starter to share, the Kentucky rib-eye, the lamb ribs and a lip-smacking crème brûlée to round it all off. In all honesty we could find no fault. Perhaps the halloumi could have used a little extra seasoning and acidity but that's probably just me nitpicking.

The portion sizes for Ben's main meals show a real generosity of spirit. The home-style fries are perfectly fluffy inside and crunchy outside. A ratatouille side (which is not usually something I enjoy) added something special, making each serving more than your average "meat and three veg" meal. Each plate came with a dollop of homemade relish that I would buy by the liter if I could.

The ribs were tender and juicy, falling right off the bone. I had to concentrate pretty hard to bury the caveman urge to pull each bone out with my bare hands. An earthy spice rub coated the meat beautifully, making it infinitely better than any ribs I've encountered in an SA restaurant thus far.

While the ribs were spectacular, the rib-eye was the true hero of the evening. Thick cut, dry-aged, freshly butchered, beautifully seared, succulent and tender.... it was flawless. Slathered in a mountain of boozy, creamy deliciousness, it did nothing short of warm me up from the inside.

I didn't manage to get a picture of the brûlée - sorry folks. By that stage I was too gloriously happy to whip out my phone camera again. Served in a teacup it was the perfect portion size. Smooth and decadent, it helped round off a meal that was perfect in every way.
