The venue is so beautiful!
Service is great; efficient, friendly and accomodating.
Food was amazing. Loved the complementary bread and deep fried pork. Between courses they serve palette cleansers which has a little gin (YUM).
Cocktails are also delicious too. Cannot fault them on anything 💙💙
Overture has always been on my list of places to have lunch and it was devine! We chose the 4 course menu with wine pairing! Every dish was tasty and had some traditional and complex flavours! The wines also paired very well with the dishes! Excellent service! The only thing I can maybe fault is the interior of the restaurant being a bit out dated. Will definitely be back.
Really good service, the best thing about this restaurant. The meals are well presented but the taste of the meals could be a bit more refined
Wonderful evening of the most amazing food! Honestly cannot fault them. Every ounce of care and thought was taken when planning the current menu. Definitely worth a trip back!
This was definitely a worthwhile experience from the moment we booked. The food was magnificent and the service was intuitive and flawless!!!
World class experience at Overture. The courses were spectacular with a guava purée palate cleaner served to suit the entire menu. The first plates which were brought out (compliments of the restaurant) was biltong Ash and an animal fat candle candle to accompany the fresh in house baked bread. Spectacular views and gardens at Hidden Valley. House Wine great and a South African gin bar to suit the gin drinkers. It was a restaurant which Bertus Basson provided an experience for his diners.
Paradise! Excellent and exciting food. Stunning views. Unintrusive but efficient service. Sitting on the balcony for lunch is an all-round perfect experience
An amazing food experience with a lot of complimentary courses to justify the pricing. I can’t wait to come back. The soufflé was the best I have ever had!

Overture is one of the restaurants owned by well-known South African chef, Bertus Basson. Overture is situated on the picturesque Hidden Valley Wine Estate in Stellenbosch; the most gorgeous setting. Bertus Basson prides himself on a love for typically local South African cuisine. I was fortunate enough to visit Overture during one of my recent trips to Cape Town.
Overture Restaurant
Stellenbosch
Been wanting to get here for a while and have had many friends telling us to try it. So today with some good old friends from Johannesburg visiting, we got the chance to have a fantastic lunch.
The weather today was cold and raining but that didn't put a damper on our lunch at all. Started with a little wine tasting next door at Hidden Valley wines with Megan and a wonderful log fire. Then to lunch.
"Bat" our waiter, and the rest of the team really looked after us well the whole afternoon. Informed, friendly, inciteful and joyful from all the waiters.
The first dish to arrive was the "Chip & Dip before a Braai" - Sweet potato chips, Crispy Kale, and Sago crips with avocado dip. This was followed by the bread dish which was just simply delicious. Beef fat candle with biltong dust to dip some bread into with an amazing story behind it, plus smoked olives and olive paste (in the shape of a little olive tree) and Pork rillettes, onion and home cured mustard dip/spreads plus a little choux pastry filled with cream cheese and a pea and asparagus soup, were all gone in about 2 minutes.
Now to our ordered starters: "Breekwater", West Coast flavours, yuzo, avocado - Combination of flavours and textures was divine. A cold dish of fresh yellowtail spiced and wrapped in a cucumber shell with olive tapenade and assortment seeds and puffed buckwheat with yoghurt dressing.
The second starter was Edwern-Heim Asparagus, smoked pork loin, nasturtium, crisp mushroom, apple. All I can say is it looked amazing, by the time I looked at my Dad's plate to ask to taste it was gone.
Main meals: Dry aged beef, monkey gland glaze, spinach puree, mushroom, coffee sauce. Cooked medium rare which was cooked to perfection. Coffee sauce was added at the table.
Roast Gurnard, Hathaway greens, basil, tomato, olive. Simply divine, tomato and olive combination with the Gurnard perfectly matched.
Lamb Rump, kidney, spring vegetables, parsnip. My mom's dish looked stunning.
Server with wonderful crisp roasted potatoes.
Pallet cleanser was a little guava sorbet on a stick served on a bed of crushed ice.
Desserts: Strawberry patch trifle. Strawberry sorbet with a mixture of goodies with cream and jelly - simply divine.
Boeretroos souffle, Cremora and Ideal milk ice cream, this was my dish of the day hands down. Never had such a delicious and amazing texture. Best souffle I've ever had.
Dalewood cheeses, fresh pear, onion marmalade, roast apple, seed loaf.
We will be back here and hopefully soon. Really had wonderful lunch at Overture Restaurant. Overture Restaurant's teeth rating:
Food: 10 "teeth" out of 10
Service and Staff: 9 " teeth" out of 10
Ambience: 8 "teeth" out of 10
Overall: 27 "teeth" out of 30
A phenomenal foodie and sensory experience.
The views honestly made this place a little extra special, the ability to sit outside for lunch with the sun shining down on the vineyards and eat for 3-4 hours with lots of wine makes me so happy. It sets Overture apart from many top restaurants.
The food of course speaks for itself - it is a real treat, every course carefully planned with flavour exploitions.
Beautiful wine options, which I always appreciate.
The waiters were lovely, they all work together so well and just really want you to have a good time.
I can't wait to go back!
For someone that is not big on deserts the deserts at Overture left a lasting impression on me. A memorable fine dining experience in a warm and friendly restuarant. I have to go back to try the new season menu.
Overture was recommended to us by a friend. The food was incredible, we had the 6 course taster menu which was in fact more than 6 courses in the end - not complaining!
The venue is beautiful, set within the Hidden Valley wine estate. Our table overlooked the stellenbosch hills, couldn't have asked for more.
The service was generally very good, although we were abruptly handed the bill after our final course without being asked if we wanted anything else and when I needed assistance getting a taxi the staff weren't particularly helpful. For this reason I'd give the experience 4 out of 5, rather than full marks.
This was our first foodie stop for our Cape Town December holiday and we were very pleased we came! Aside from lovely scenery, the restaurant is set in a lovely spot. Parking was a slight issue as the restaurant was pretty full, this is definitely something they need to work on.
The staff are very friendly and helpful. We decide to have the 6 course meal paired with wine. We were mostly given their wine, it would have been nice to try some from other estates but it did pair well.
The food was lovely and there was plenty of it by the time you finished. My favorites were the chilled spanspek sop, the poached tuna, the roast kabeljou and the banana cream pie. The maize chips were also lovely!
There should be a higher score for this restaurant. Every time I visit this restaurant chef Bertus Basson dishes up a new story for us to enjoy, most inspired by the surroundings and by his own experiences. The service is phenomenal as the staff enjoy working there as much as the guests love eating there. Each dish is packed with big flavours and the skills and techniques of Bertus's team is evident in every bite. You will not leave hungry either! You are treated to four amuse bouche followed by a choice of a three or six course meal, a palette cleanser before dessert and a variety of petit fours to enjoy with coffee (should you still have space). No words I put down will do justice to this experience. I love the relaxed atmosphere and that there is no pretentiousness at this top 10 restaurant. Just a phenomenal food journey.
We had a very nice wine tasting of 6 wines followed by a 3 course lunch but the lunch included lots of small tasters that almosy made it a degustatation. The food was simply great, served with their great wine selection. Its also a very pretty farm to visit in Stellenbosch.
I was fortunate enough to visit Overture during a farewell for my colleague. I have driven past here many a times and just never stopped by. The views are magnificent looking out onto the Simonberg mountains tucked in between the Helderberg mountains. I always knew the view would be fantastic but it truly is a blessing to live in such a beautiful place.
The service throughout by our waiters and service manager was great. Explaining dishes and serving in a speedily manner.
They offer a 3 course or 6 course (chefs special) which they recommend. Portions are perfectly sized and even though appearing small - more than enough with all the Amuse Bouche they bring from start to finish ;)
So my food journey for the day was as follows :
I ate the Asparagus, Beetroot, Charred Aubergine purée, onion dressing with egg mayo as starter. The asparagus was fresh and the flavors were bursting. It was a sweet/sour combination just super explosive. One of my absolute favorites.
The main : Chalmar Sirloin, shortrib, asparagus, charred onion miso with a sherry sauce. This dish was underwhelming. The flavors were a bit to the bland side but the presentation was on par. All I can say it's great quality, I just didn't love it. ;)
The dessert : "The roadside treat" consisting of a chocolate royaltine bar, with kola ice cream. There were even mini marshmallows which were amazing. Wow this dessert was so delicious.
I loved visiting Overture and fantastic job by chef Bertus Basson and the waiters. Thank you I will be back.
Fantastic experience, we were treated like royalty and always felt special.
The food was great and a completely different taste experience to the other restaurants we've dined at.
Outstanding. A magnificent setting, attentive but unobtrusive service, and most importantly of course memorably delicious food. The menu is limited but intriguing enough to make choosing your dish the delightfully difficult process it is meant to be. There is emphasis on imaginative touches using local ingredients, and plenty of amuses bouche and chef's surprises to make you feel thoroughly spoilt. We also drank the Hidden Valley Sauvignon Blanc and unanimously decided to buy more at the shop to take home. The price factor means that for us South Africans it will always be more of a special occasion venue, but definitely worth it.
To me the best restaurant in South Africa. When I am in Cape Town, I can't mis the stop at Overture. The wine lands, Stellenbosch the wine they serve and the food from the gods. This is and always will be close to my heart. Exceptional

This was my first and defiantly not my last time at Overture!
I felt like I was on a journey, every single amuse told a story about the chefs upbringing and we( my guests and I ) couldn't wait to see how he plated the next dish.
Every single element on the dish was carefully thought out and worked perfectly together. I highly recommend Overture as it really does live up to its reputation !
Stylish and elegant. Great for romantic dinners. Friends recommended this place and it was everything a date night should be.Tables next to the fireplace in the chilly winter are a must!!!!!
Bertus and his team never stop impressing. The food is perfect, well thoughts out and the flavours are just phenomenal. The service is quick and efficient.
The wine list is limited but provides a nice selection from all over the Western Cape and for all budgets - you can always opt for the food/wine pairing which has been structured to compliment the dish you order.
If you want to "kuir" then sit back, order the six course tasting menu and enjoy 3 or 4 hours with friends, family or even alone.
We did the wine and chocolate paring here as well as the olive and wine pairing and both were really good :) service was great, and with breathtaking views looking over Stellenbosch and situated at the bottom of the Helderberg mountains, I highly recommend this to all Trinka Mynhardt
Always consistently great lunch. Truly exceptional food, creatively prepared and beautifully presented. Small touches add to the experience . Wonderful service with knowledgable staff and the most beautiful location . We left way after 5pm!!!
It's very easy to see why this restaurant is one of the top is South Africa.
Firstly, it's setting is amazing. Beautiful views of vineyards, a little lake, blue skies.
Secondly the service is of the best. Attentive, engaging and helpful.
Then of course the food is absolutely delicious! I had the watermelon starter, fish main and soufflé. The wine is tasty too! Highly highly recommended.
We had high expectations of the "braai master" Bertus Basson, and whilst we enjoyed the experience it didn't quite hit the mark. Delicious homemade bread, but please oh please can restaurants stop serving kale chips which are so l in vogue, they are insipid and remind me of month old veg you forgot to clean out of your fridge before going on holiday! To start I had the rabbit with chickpeas which was served with a tomato based sauce, I found the sauce overpowered the rabbit slightly. My girlfriend had the mussels to start which were delicious. For mains I had the ribeye which was served with a coffee sauce and the chefs take on "spinach and pumpkin" - the South African staple veg in most restaurants. Overall all the elements tasted delicious but the meat was a massive let down as it was closer to medium-well where I asked for medium-rare. As a result the meat was tough and not as tender as I would have liked. My girlfriend had the duck which was a bit too salty for our taste, my guess is that it was brined prior to cooking. For dessert I had the caramel slice which was good in parts but shockingly the pastry base was burnt black in parts. The apricot soufflé was amazing, served with apricot ice cream and sliced apricots, I had massive food envy. The setting is stunningly beautiful and the service is great. I would recommend this restaurant despite one or two mistakes but wouldn't rush back.
This has to be one of the best meals I've ever eaten! It's fine dining with an interesting take on South African eating and ingredients.
All the food that arrived in front of us with immaculately presented and we were intrigued by the design and style of the unique food! We opted for a 3 course menu at R410 a head, although this is pricey it was worth every cent we payed. I haven't eaten in many restaurants that intrigued my palate as well as my eyes!
Plus, you can wash down the food with a glass of Champagne and delicious wine!
Along with the spectacular food, the farm itself is absolutely breathtaking. Couple this with the immaculate service and it makes for an incredible afternoon.
Not only an incredible meal but simply an amazing experience. Friendly, attentive staff and an inspiring venue! Favorite restaurant in Cape Town
A beautiful restaurant with a winning staff and food selection.
The views from this place are breathtaking and add so much to the experience.
The food is spectacular and unique in every way. Presentation has got you drooling before you touch anything, and the composition is flawless.
Our service was friendly, persuasive and informed. His attention added to our pleasant experience and we were more than well looked after.
We left feeling happy, full, and spoiled.
We were spoilt tonight with a chef's choice of 6 wonderful courses. We had no clue what was coming but the meals got better and better as we went along. We were completely impressed and totally overwhelmed. What a fantastic venue.
Awesome meal! Was treated and spoiled by a great chef and friend, Bertus Basson. Great flavours and food combinations in the 6 course meal we enjoyed tonight.

Unique, beautiful and truly on the tip of what Fine dining is like. The view is amazing and the food is truly unique and simple but yet elegant and stylish.
Food should taste this Good and should definitely look that way
Stunning views, Excellent Food and amazing wines. This has to be one of the places to visit and eat in South Africa. The services provided is close to none out there. For the food itself tender meat, velvet sauces and stunningly fresh veggies. My next trip to Cape Town I'm paying this place another visit.
Had lunch at Overture recently. Have heard so much about it and have had friends who list Overture as one of their top restaurants in Cape Town.Â
I loved the dĂ©cor, almost a Scandinavian feel to it with slate, stone and big windows. The patio must be wonderful in the summer with the exquisite views. The day we visited the rain had moved in for the winter! It was warm inside and the fires were burning as well as blankets for your knees.Â
We each chose different items off the menu so that we could taste and see what was on offer.Â
I had the Impala tartar, macadamia puree, toasted macadamia, radish, grissini and my friend the oxtail ravioli. For mains she had the Beef Sirloin, monkey gland glaze, spinach, crisp onions, mushrooms I had the fish of the day with romanesco,  and the most awesome flavours! For dessert I had Crotin, compressed figs, fig puree, figs and almonds and my friend had the vanilla soufflĂ© with ice cream.  We loved the little touches, the breads and interesting accompaniments, the little palate cleansers that were like little works of art.Â
It is great to have such a fine restaurant on our doorstep. And I particularly liked that on the day we visited, a lady was in charge of the kitchen!
We enjoyed an afternoon at the Gourmet Braai and Wine Festival and WOW – big, fat, delicious WOW… and that’s just the beginning of what I have to say…. We arrived at the Hidden Valley Wine Estate shortly after 12 and quickly made our way up to the Overture Restaurant. As soon as we walked through the doors, we knew we were in for a fantastic afternoon. The place was buzzing with activity (young and old) – wine and olive tastings were in full swing, balloon and unicycle rides were keeping the kiddies entertained  and the  gorgeous foodie smells filling the warm and cozy restaurant were drool worthy.
Did a chocolate and wine pairing- what an experience!! The wine is out of this world, and a view to die for. The chocolate pairing is definitely worth it. Although, definitely go when the wind is not blowing as it can be quite a downer.
Had the most stunning dinner at Overture on a freezing cold cape winters night. The service is impeccable, our sommelier was one of the best I've encountered and gave such good recommendations. To start we had the samp and marron, for mains I had the ribeye with parsnip purée, roast parsnips and parsnip crisps . The highlight for me was definitely dessert, a vanilla panacotta with rhubarb jelly, roast rhubarb , jasmine rice sorbet , meringues and guava . It was a top ten dessert and I think Overture deserves its ranking as one of SA's top 10 restaurants! Still salivating .
Set in the tranquil, exquisite, Stellenbosch, this restaurant delivers and excels infinitely. A truly special choice. Make sure you have the vanilla soufflé!
We had an unbelievable lunch at Overture!
The venue is mind blowing with some of the best views in Stellenbosch if not THE best view in Stellenbosch.
Service was quick and professional and our glasses were always on the half full side. I particularly appreciated this considering how good the wine was.
We ordered starters, mains and desserts but little tasters and amuses along the way added to an amazing dining experience. The food is delicious and honest. This is fine dining of the unpretentious kind.
Visit on a beautiful day but make sure to book well in advance to get a table outside right by the front. The food and the view will be in constant battle for who is more beautiful!
Well worth a visit. Great ambience. Fantastic food combinations. A changing menu meaning can visit again and again. I look forward to my next visit.
Always a treat to go to Overture! The food never disappoints, the staff are friendly and efficient and the views are spectacular! Do yourself a favour...
Food: 4- classic combinations and modern cooking techniques. Starters and desserts are always faultlessly delicious.
Wine: 4.5- Good selection and the wine pairing has been carefully and well-constructed.
Ambience: 5- Relaxed yet sophisticated.
Setting: 4.5- Try get a table outside on a summers day/eve as the view is breathtaking.
Service: 5- Outstanding service. Attentive and knowledgable staff.
Notes:
The bread and dips are amazing (pumpkin bread and garlic emulsion is yum!) and the pallet cleansers are always simple and refreshing (frozen grappa grapes or rum pineapple)
If there is a soufflé on the dessert section I highly recommend them as they are light, sweet and not eggy at all (The milk tart soufflé with Van der Hum Creme anglaise and cinnamon ice cream is life changing!)
Main courses are always delicious but somehow lack the excitement and creativity found in the starters and desserts- I have experienced this with a few fine-dining restaurants though.
Overall, Overture is a firm favourite you can always count on for a wonderful culinary experience.
Exceptional from start to finish! It's rare to find a fine-dining establishment where the food doesn't have to shout - every dish had perfect balance between subtle layers of flavour and excellent technique. Top it off with great service and beautiful location, what's not to like?
We went for a very nice lunch on a sunny Saturday , very relaxing in the beautiful wine region. We opted for the 5 courses menu, there was a three courses option but we were intrigued by all we read on the list. It’s a pity we couldn’t do wine pairing, but that’s the rule for level 4 . We’ll surely go back soon , food was good and very well plated. Don’t be worried by the size of the dishes at the beginning of the meal, you won’t leave hungry.
Wow, wow, WOW! We were treated to a successful project launch at Overture by our company and we were thoroughly spoiled!
First of all, the views from Hidden Valley are SPECTACULAR! Truly they are amongst the most beautiful views in the Winelands if not in Cape Town.
Overture itself boasts incredible views from the dining area. The interior is very spacious and surrounded by glass windows.
The food was very good. We were treated to a 5 course meal and each meal was fresh and tasty and the selection of wines we were given were delicious.
The service was top-notch and we were very well looked after. A fantastic experience all-round!

Absolutely phenomenal experience! My granddaughter and I had some we-time and decided to visit the Overture on the recommendation of a family member. We were met with exceptional customer care: Super caring, friendly, welcoming, staff. They were concerned about any allergies that we might have that may impact the amazing 3 or five course meal that will be prepared for us. We discovered canapes and hot ciabatta with whipped butter are divine explosions on the palate. We simply loved it. Service is well formatted. The waitress served us timeously, keeping our glasses filled. The time between the courses was well managed. Staff adhered to Covid protocols. The venue is found on a hilltop overlooking the beauty of nature and fills you with tranquility. Words cannot describe the unique experience, absolute divine meals and awesome views to be found at Overture. Where to begin with the description of the meals! My goodness! The food is really tasty with different explosions of flavors. The waitress explains exactly what you will be eating and what has been prepared. It shares the same premises of Hidden Valley Wines where wines can be bought and has wheel chair access. The lights are a bit too low though. This place is true Awesomeness! Awesomeness! Awesomeness! Price is worth it. This is an ideal place for a special event not exceeding 60 people. Thank you staff of Overture for a unique experience. We will be back soon with the whole family!
Overture at Hidden Valley is one of those iconic South African restaurants that showcases the talent of the South African restaurant industry. As it is set to close at the end of September 2022, I immediately grabbed the opportunity to go eat there when it presented itself. From the restaurant and the waiters, to the actual dishes themselves, everything together forms a whole experience. They have 2 menu options with one being 3 courses and the other is 5 courses. We decided to go for the 5 course so as to really experience all that Overture has to offer. Each dish was beautifully presented and very tasty, however the stand out dish for my wife and I was the garlic soup with red wine braised snails, Usana egg, gremolata and wood sorrel. I have always loved snails, but this dish took it to the next level! What I also loved was how passionate the waiters spoke about each dish when they presented it - it really puts the cherry on top. As Overture is in the heart of Stellenbosch, each dish has a wine recommendation so you can even do a pairing with each dish. The restaurant is just as beautiful as the food, with modern and stylish décor, and big glass windows taking advantage of the amazing views of the valley below. We even had the pleasure of meeting Bertus Basson who was very friendly and you could hear the love he has for Overture and what he does in the way he speaks. I am sad that Overture is closing, but glad I had the opportunity to experience it. Thank you to Bertus and the entire team for an amazing evening and all the best for the next venture. On to the Chorus!
This restaurant is set up in a place called the hidden valley. It has a spectacular backdrop of the vine yards. The food was exquisitely delicious. However the table service was slightly sub-par.
We went in December 2020 for their Thursday special, did the 3 course with wine pairing. R250 for 3 course and R290 for wine pairing.
Not sure I would recommend the wine pairing might be better to pick your own wine off the menu. Although we really enjoyed the experience, Im not sure I would pay the normal price on other days.
The service was very good. Somelier was knowledgeable. I really enjoyed the raw yellowtail, was handsdown my favourite course. The rest of the group had the chicken liver pate and everyone agreed its one of the bests they have had.
Mains I had the bream, it was also good but I felt the onion was a bit much( obviously taste is objective the next person might enjoy it). The pork belly was also a bit of a let down. BUT the sirloin was the winner here! Perfectly cooked, I kicked myself for not ordering it myself
Dessert I tried the mango sorbet(moslty cause I love bubbly and hate sweet wines) I felt it lacked that pineapple punch. Yet again the one to go for here is the salted caramel tart..had a taste and can truly say wow.
If you are considering Overture, go and try it but go on a Thursday. I loved seeing al.the young people working there not sure if they are chefs in training or working as interns but was nice to see
An absolutely amazing meal. Each course beautifully presented, so flavorsome, great service. Thoroughly enjoyed the nonalcoholic cocktails.
Hubby and I visited for a Friday night date night and boy what a treat! Firstly, the impeccable service needs a special mention. From the manager on duty welcoming us at the door to the drinks master and the kitchen staff, everyone was very friendly and made us feel extremely welcome. Soon after arriving a drinks trolley was wheeled our way with a wonderful selection of cocktails to choose from. We opted for the old fashioned and it was delicious. We happily sipped on this while perusing the evening's menu. We opted for the four course wine paired menu and it was, to say the least, sublime. The attention to detail was exceptional and the knowledgeable waiters explained everything to the last detail. This oldie but goodie should in our opinion definitely be visited for an experience to remember
What a wonderful place to eat and enjoy food and view.
Great to know this place want to promote local products and services. Congratulations for that and thank you for your hospitality
