I have been coming to Steam for over three years and it just keeps getting better! The food, the drinks, the live entertainment it's all so amazing. One of my favourite spots.
We sat upstairs in the bar area and had an utterly scrumptious evening.
Not quite the student prices you would expect of Stellenbosch, and yet well worth a splurge.
The drinks menu offers some exciting options and the starter meals that we all shared were seriously flavoursome. The spicy meatballs and chicken wings left a lingering thought that I have to go back and try out more of their menu.
The vibe is really... vibey! They nailed the steam punk atmosphere.

Great vibe, have yet to eat there but their gin cocktails are exquisite. The staff is friendly. A little overpriced, especially for the student market of Stellenbosch but worth the treat.

The atmosphere is really awesome we were at the upper level and there was live music. Only criticism is that the live music was a bit too loud and we had to shout over it but other than that we Loved the gins - definitely will be coming back đ
Variety of food and tapas, friendly staff and amazing cocktails. My favorite has to be the upstairs gin bar - intimate and beautifully decorated, its perfect for casual evening drinks.
After spending the full day walking around Stellies sightseeing, my friend and I were craving something sweet and a cup of coffee.
Approaching from the Church street, we spotted the 'Truth coffee' umbrellas in the distance and decided to plant ourselves at Steam, before making our way home.
Upon entering we noticed that the decor was steampunk inspired and so were the waiters' attire. Wonder if they have any affiliation to Truth in Buitenkant street...
Both my friend and I opted for the Nutella pancakes. Super delicious and served with a very generous serving of Nutella. Coffee was great too.
I flicked through the rest of the menu and it looks very promising. I need to make a point of returning here for a full meal.

Steam Stellenbosch will always stay a classic weekend starter for me.
The open rooftop bar is the perfect place to be on a early summer afternoon, as the last moments of daylight melt away in shades of purple orange and pink. We sat at comfortable couches, sipping on one of their gin and tonic specials while enjoying the vibe, each other's company and a Steam basket. Their gin and tonic menu is quite versatile, with something for most gin drinkers to enjoy. The waiting staff is quite knowledgeable about gin and accompanied tonics. If you ever struggle to make your own decision on what to order... their suggestions rarely disappoint. The food is also of good quality. The Steam Basket comprised of curried spring rolls, chilli poppers, mouthwatering dukkah rubbed ribs, crumbed camembert wedges and the most delicious Cajun spiced chicken strips with a variety of two sauces. The only let down for me was the camembert wedges. It's only a mouthful of cheese, being a bit bland, spoiling what could have been a great addition to the basket. It needs something to bring out the brilliant camembert qualities or at least something to compliment it. The rest was enjoyable and more than enough for a party of two. Steam is and will definitely stay one of my favorite hang out spots in Stellenbosch. It is a perfect place for a sundowner, chilling spot and a gin and tonic heaven
Good calm atmosphere, friendly service. The waiters know there products well. The aoli was fantastic with the sweet potato fries. The peanut butter honey milkshake was great.
We really enjoyed this restaurant. The burgers were really tasty and came with chips, salad and roast sweet potatoes. The waffles were also really nice and they had some local craft beers on tap.The service was good too.
Had some brilliant food at Steam! A wide menu with something for everyone one. I had the sirloin steak with blue cheese sauce which was pan fried (could choose between pan fried or grilled) to perfection, bleu, just as it was ordered. My partner enjoyed a scrumptious bacon, avo, feta burger.
The restaurant has an interesting vibe, old steam powered devices forming a large part of the decor and the waitrons are dressed up in some funky old school attire from the steam age.
There is bar upstairs with some live music where patrons can make their way to before or after dinner.
Great all round experience, will definitely be back!
Heard about steam from lots of people, came and tried it for the first time for a friends birthday where we sat at the gin bar! Had the most delicious berry cocktail and the floradora. Am keen to come back and try a few more of the cocktails and food! We were well looked after and the vibe is unreal! Love it!
I'd heard about steam before but never knew how awesome the vibe is there! We sat upstairs at the Gin Bar. Such a cool place and location feels like you are in a foreign country. I had the floraDora cocktail which was amazing I had to have two! Most of my friends also had the Gin cocktails which I tired and would definitely go back and order them! I would also recommend the berry cocktail can't remember the name all I know is that it had absolute vodka and a lot of berries! Very tasty!
Can't wait to go back and try out their food and more of their cocktails đč
Very enjoyable! The chicken pasta is beautiful creamy mushroom combination! The salads are good but the real star is their dark chocolate mousse!!
What a cool place. Went there for late dinner and were served promptly even though it was already after 9. Got a nice 4 seater table outside, wine was divine and I had the ribs and they were very very yummy and nicely priced. The rest of my party enjoyed their food as well, our waiter was a bit shaky and not completely comfortable yet but overall even though he stumbled over his words a few times and didn't know a few things he was there whenever we needed him and served us very nicely. We had an encounter with a few big flying bugs outside and some of the waiters also came to our rescue! Love the style and look of the place, the menu could be bigger. Overall I'm definitely going back for some more ribs and the cool atmosphere.
We used to loooove this venue when it was 5 Ryneveld, so it was quite a surprise to come back here and it was a new place. The waiters are dresses in steam punk fashion and the menu was overhauled completely.
Loved the courtyard with its natural light. My boyfriend had the African Trio - what a delight - and I had the pasta. It was good, needed a bit of acidity, but nothing a squeeze of lemon couldnt fix.
All in all a great experience. A very enthusiastic thumbs up.
Great place to have lunch in Stellenbosch. We booked a table and arrived at a very busy time. It took a while for our waiter to bring the menu.
The menu is interesting. Lots on offer. Anything from traditional bobotie to pasta, meat dishes including Springbok. I ordered pasta. The other guests ordered burgers, bobotie and a trio of meat platter. Everthing looked great and we all had compliments about the food. I can highly recommend the pasta. They have a reasonable wine list, can offer more from the region but you can bring your own. Corkage is R45 (nearly full marks if not for the average wine list).

What an awesome little thing they've got going here. Gin Bar upstairs, restaurant downstairs, varied menu, great vibe and quite a romantic atmosphere. Basically everything a restaurant should be. There was some confusion with our table booking and we had to wait before being seated. Thereafter, it was all good food and good fun.
I had a lovely cocktail of whose name I simply cannot remember. But when I go back and choose it again I'll edit this reviewđ My boyfriend and I both had burgers which were genuinely scrumptious. Served on toasted ciabatta rolls of a reasonable size (as opposed to standard soft white burger buns), the burger patty was full of flavour, not too dense and super juicy.
Given that they were very busy, I'll excuse the slightly slow service. But I give our waiter full credit for getting our orders right and being readily available for anything we needed. Definitely going back!!
Steam is a really good restaurant in stellenbosch that stays open till 12.30am which sets it apart from the other places in the area. They have a very big variety of foods from pasta to burgers to wraps. I had the falafel wrap which was really good except I felt it had a little too much coriander in it. You get both chips and salads with your main which is nice. Overall will come back here often I think.
I never knew about this steam punk vibe place but what a great discovery. Very trendy and the decor is different but in a good way!
The menu boasts dishes that will suit any taste. Breakfast, tapas, platters, burgers, grills and other favourites. Definitely a hidden gem.

A great steam punk themed restaurant in Stellenbosch. Very nice location with lovely street side sitting. Very good value for money and good service. If you're looking for South African traditional cuisine they also have some good options, of which the African Trio will give you the most variety. The babotie was particularly tasty (spicy so be wary).
Great venue and fantastic service. I enjoyed my burger and coffee, but one of the people with me found her veggie burger very overspiced (as in hot, and there's no mention of spice in the menu listing for it).
Steam is one of my favourite spots in Stellenbosch â good for a drink after work and a casual meal any time of the day. The food is really good and the portion sizes are impressive â really! The upstairs area is a great place to meet up with friends and have a few drinks â you can also order tapas and starters when sitting upstairs. And the service is all round great!
The courtyard is the perfect setting for a relaxed meal! I was gladly surprised to find vegetarian burgers on the menu. The mushroom patty burger was delicious. The pancakes and chocolate for dessert is a must. It's simple yet satisfying. The service was great! Will definitely go back.

Loads of gin variety and tonic options. mix and match or ask the bar tender and he will whip up a tasty explosion.
Lovely place with lovely staff and service. The best part of it all was the food. All the meals were of a high standard and the place had a good vibe to it. Had no more space for dessert but I'll definitely be going back.
You are whisked away into a difderent era the moment you walk through Steam's doors! I still can't decide which was better - the food, the waiter's warm conversations or the amazing food they present you with. The menu caters for even the fussiest of diners and the cosy ambience is one very few wouldn't adore. Whether you want tea or a vintage tea cocktail - it's waiting to be made! This is one place I'd recommend to ANYone âĄ@
Steam Restaurant has a very nice and unique atmosphere. Their waiters/waitresses are very competent and professional. We ordered burgers, which one would expect to be quite basic, but turned out to be a very tasteful and extravagant dish. The burger was perfect and the presentation of it as well as the side dishes was wonderful. Their prices are also not too bad.Â
I would highly recommend the place for your next night out.

(Dec 2018) I have to commend the barmen at Steam's Rooftop Bar. Their service was impeccable and they know how to make a cocktail suited for even the pickiest of taste buds. Can't wait to go back and have them whip up another marvelous cocktail or two.
(2016) Stellenbosch has always been ahead of the curve when it comes to food and restaurants, and I suspect that Steam signals the new coming of themed restaurants in the Cape Town dining scene.
As you enter the new restaurant at 5 Ryneveld, it wonât take you long to sense the steampunk atmosphere â everything from the dĂ©cor and waitersâ uniforms, to the cocktail names and yes, even the restaurantâs name itself pays homage to steampunk. And I must say they do it really well. Steam has character and personality â something that lacks in many restaurants. They were also quite full, after only opening their doors one month prior to my visit.
They offer an extensive range of food; from breakfast, tapas wraps and salads, to home-cooked bobotie and Cape Malay curries, burgers, steaks, etc. Their drinks menu also offers a wide variety â the gin cocktails looks especially unique and interesting.
If youâre not in the mood for a sit-down dinner, you could just head up to their very trendy rooftop bar and sip on quirky-named cocktails, all night long.
The food was delicious and well-priced, the service was friendly and Steam offers something fresh and unique. Iâd definitely recommend them to anyone looking for copious amounts of gin, or a trendy new hangout.
This place is awesome. I love the pimped out steam punk decor. The staff and owner are fantastic and the service is excellent. You can relax and not feeling like you being rushed. Steam punk craft beer comes recommended. Having said that the desserts could be improved a little as we were disappointed. But it will not stop me from coming back. I want to try their burgers.
I love this place and will go here for their amazing cocktails and burgurs any day. The service is always friendly and engaging, and the portions are very generous for what you pay. Their upstairs area is nicely decorated with a loungy vibe but an open plan to let in some air during summer.
Super nice upstairs tapas restaurant! The tapas are absolutely amazing! There was a live 2 man band playing on the Wednesday that I went there. The barmen are extreamly maticulous and the cocktails they put out were like no other cocktails I have ever had. Do yourself a favour and have the Mojito. It explodes with flavour which seemingly changes between sips. The upstairs has a different menu to the actual restaurant downstairs. Word of advice: go straight upstairs.
Honestly my favourite place to have a drink and chat with friends in Stellenbosch. It's up class, has a gorgeous steam punk decor, wonderful cocktail bar upstairs that feels secluded and trendy, with a prof ssional kitchen. I have not ever been disappointed with the service or food here. Absolutely a favourite.
Steam punk interior and live music. It is off church street and on the 2nd floor, so can easily be missed. I think it is fair enough to call this a hidden gem in terms of what's on offer in central Stellenbosch.
Always great going to Steam. With friendly staff that is attentive to their tables. Delicious food. Unique decor and yet an intimate feel. All round great spot to dine with friends.

So the place was a bit packed so service was slow but I love the vibe and the food was worth the wait. A must try is the Gin drinks! The dish is Ostrich fillet with baby potatoes and chips. Keep in mind that you can choose something else instead of the potatoes and chips.

First visit to Steam was very pleasant. Enjoyed the meal and the wine with the meal. Taste was good, variety and options were good, presentation was great and service was excellent. Enjoyable visit. Was lucky that the town was quiet so was able to walk in and pick a seat.

They are not cheap, but worth the price! The steam punk theme is awesome and creates a warm and fun atmosphere. They have some craft beers and a nice drinks menu, but also serve Truth coffee. Don't come here if you don't like cheese... Most of the menu has cheese as part of the dishes. From blue cheese to camembert, I was in heaven. We had the bacon wrap and vegetarian (cheesy) wrap. Both came with fries and a good salad portion. Both were very delicious!
They have outside seating for us smokers, with blankets and heaters when cold.
They accept cards, but also has zapper for payment.
Our food was stunning. I had the African trio and my girlfriend the pork ribs. We shared and were really challenged to finish it all. Flavours were amazing. Service was also great. All and all a 5 star experience.
