Review De Stomme Jonge - Stellenbosch

Delicious, fresh roosterkoek. Real south african food, I would suggest this for any family. If you are a foreigner you really can't skip this restaurant as you will miss an authentic South African meal. It is a lovely setup, you can decide whether you want to sit on the stoep, inside or at the back. It is a cozy, relaxed and homey place. The portions are proper and the menu has a wide variety

Lovely atmosphere, affordable drinks, and pleasant food. Limited menu, but good options if you’re looking specifically for a roosterkoek. However, the service is a bit slow. Overall, a great place if you’re looking for a chilled dinner in a beautiful setting.

Very cool Stellenbosch Gem. New place is bigger and very relaxed. Very cool to have the roosterkoek menu. With affordable drinks for a chilled festive time.

Best place for a good vibe. Tim does awesome live music on Thursdays!

Cozy place to drink a beer and eat roosterkoek. Popular under locals.

Lovely bar, bit pricey compared to usual student specials but such a stunning place in a great part of town. Less crowded, no big herds if first years either.

They have such a reasonably priced breakfast menu!!! I loved the bacon, egg, and cheese roosterkoek, it was so good. Kept me full for hours!

Cozy spot in stellenbosch. Whether you're looking for a nice place to chill, drink a beer or listen to some local artist's like Spoednick aka Big nick, this is the spot!

This is a great hidden gem. Fun to go there with a few friends and have a nice relaxing intimate time. They have a great selection of games available to play and the feel you get from this place is really something to experience. Love coming here to get out of the bustle of other much over crowded places to relax a bit.

This is a really great tiny restaurant to come chill and have a beer or many glasses of wine with friends. It feels super cozy and you'll forget about everything else for a while. The "roosterkoek" is amazing, you can't go wrong really.

Especially nice and cozy, small but very nice vibe, and very very pretty. Almost integrated into old housing with a great old tree on the street separating one table from the rest which I was fortunate enough to sit at. Good variety of beer on tap, with their own house lager too! Best of all... No castle light available!! Also with a few nice bottled crafts available. Definitely a favourite

I really love this tiny bar. The food, the people, the atmosphere - it's all great. You can go sit here with a group of friends, or even by yourself, and end up meeting new people and being the last to leave. The food is delicious and the bar prices are good. Definitely worth a visit.

Hidden away gem. Great local beers on tap. Uncompromising food quality with a wide variety of breads, platters and salads. Nice for afternoon lunch. Good for intimate dinner.

A warm and cozy little place that serves roosterkoek, making for a unique dining experience. The Stomme lager is delicious! Unfortunately little and not very spacious seating, but it adds to its charm. Situated in a beautiful area at the end of Ryneveldt street. Great for drinks with a few friends as it isn't too expensive and doesn't get too noisy. Also, the heaters on the stoep means it's comfy, even in the winter!

De Stomme Jonge has a really great vibe. Cute and cosy feel while you sit on the streets of Stellies. We managed to share the big platter amongst 4 of us and the size was perfect (with extra bread). As a student this place was really affordable, both food and service was good.

The best cheese platter I've had to date! (De Stomme Jonge Platter). Service did become a bit scarce as they only had one waiter on duty who also had to stand in for the bar.

Lovely vibe with tasty food and a great selection of beer, De Stomme Jonge is a great place to grab a few drinks and enjoy a home cooked meal under the shade of the Stellenbosch oak trees.

First impressions is that it doesn't look like much - the seating outside is quite dirty, but refreshing on a hot summer's day with mist raining over you from the above sprinklers. The inside seems a bit tacky and everything smells a bit like smoke. But once you sink your teeth into a freshly baked roosterkoek, enjoyed with an ice cold beer, you come to realize that no one here cares about appearances, but rather about delicious food and having a good time.

I had the roosterkoek with basil pesto, feta and cherry tomatoes. I absolutely loved it, my only problem being the onions on it that was not on the menu description. So after digging out all those pesky onions (they just don't sit right with me), it was absolutely delicious! My better half had the chicken and cheese roosterkoek and also thoroughly enjoyed it.

A lovely place to enjoy a late lunch or drinks anytime with a couple of friends. Very small space, but I recommend you sit outside. I can highly recommend the roosterkoek and the liefmans fruitesse makes a lovely refreshing drink for the ladies. Well priced and fast service, I will definitely be returning!

You'd better be open to talking to strangers if you want to visit the cutest spot in town. There's a stoep where a couple of people can squeeze into (if the weather permits), a bar area where about 6 people can comfortably sit, and a lounge where you could easily grope a stranger's bum if it pleases you. It's smaller than a mini's boot, but cosier than your grandma's bosom.
Their roosterkoeke are phenomenal; maybe just because you don't get roosterkoeke anywhere else but at a family reunion braai, and completely affordable too.
It's a MUST for any tourist, hipster local or lonesome soul strolling by.

Love the vibe and character of this tiny restaurant. Its hidden behind a huge tree, and consists of only two small rooms and a few tables on the sidewalk. The menu consists of traditional "roosterkoeke" served with the freshest ingredients. Service is always friendly and quick, seeing as the kitchen is so small (you walk past it on the way to the bathroom). I would definitely recommend this to anyone seeking a traditional afrikaans experience in Stellenbosch.

As far as watering holes go, De Stomme Jonge is a good one. Bonus is that the food is also really good. They offer very decent prices on drinks.

My cousin took me here when I came to Stellenbosch... I was blown away. So much so, that I insisted to come back the next evening. The fresh roosterkoek, warm and crunchy, with lavish toppings... Still dreaming about this dinner!

De Stomme Jonge really stood out as one of my favourite places I've eaten at in Stellenbosch. Recommended by a friend, it's a small place that serves delicious platters of food, and a very social and enjoyable place sit down and enjoy a meal and a drink and take in the vibe.

De Stomme Jonge is a quaint, intimate little restaurant in Reyneveld street, Stellenbosch. It looks like it could have been an old farm house before... I'm not entirely sure. But one can choose to sit outside on the covered "stoep" (and there are heaters on chilly days), inside at the round tables/stools by the dark wooden bar or on the lazy leather couch in the next room.

The old fashioned lanterns on the tables, tall candles, red and white checkered table cloths, the owner's personal collectables on the walls and good taste in music (mostly bluesy rock and classics from my experience) make for that personal touch and a very casual, comfortable and warm ambiance. The owner is usually there himself and not shy to join an inviting table or have his own company over until late into the night/early morning.

You can't go wrong with a glass of red Wolftrap or Unbelievable here. They also serve craft beers, among a basic variety of other beverages, and great coffee. Their famous "roosterkoek" is a must on the menu, but if you feel more pecky try a cheese and/or cold meats platter or even just a bowl of biltong, peanuts or olives. They also have traditional South African desserts like milk tart, malva pudding, "koeksisters" etc. This is by no means a fine dining experience but honest, good food and value for your money.

I would definitely add this place to my Stellenbosch to-do list if you haven't been yet. It's one of my favourites. And around big events in Stellenbosch, especially the annual Woordfees, you might find some local celebs hanging out here... Or university academics and of the more cultured students on a day-to-day basis. It caters for a wide market.

The most local pub in Stellenbosch, and one of my favourites. Go and have a craft beer; or their famous "Unbelievable" red wine, and stay for hours. If you get hungry, order a "roosterkoek" (a fresh bread made on the fire) platter and chat to the locals around you. Although marketed as a restaurant, this place can turn in to quite a vibey spot later in the evenings. Old school music, hipster art work on the walls, and a cool atmosphere in general. This is a must for anyone visiting / living in Stellenbosch.

Came here to celebrate a 2 year anniversary with my boyfriend and I absolutely LOVED it here! The food was absolutely amazing and had a touch of rustic to it! We had the de stomme jonge platter for two and we were absolutely full afterwards! Worth the pricing and quaint little set up 👍🏼😁

Ah, I love the board games available to play for free. The quiant setting and multiple small rooms makes it perfect for a small, intimate party or event. The menu is unique and very well presented. I would recommend any Stellies noobs to stay away - leave it for the rest of us.

This has recently become my most favourite place in the world!

I visited De Stomme Jonge for my anniversary, not knowing it was in actual fact the restaurant’s birthday. We had it very lucky - most of the drinks were on special and there was a live performance right through the evening! Unfortunately, birthdays only come once a year, but this restaurant is still a MUST!

We ordered the De Stomme Jonge platter and wow, so much food! Every type of cheese, preserve and cold meat you can think of, accompanied by a well prepared and baked Rooster koek. Absolutely amazing. The food is not that expensive if you compare it with the portion sizes.

The night was made even better by the awesome service. Our waiter’s name was Jacques, and what a pleasure it was.

Booking is essential, as the restaurant is really small. Luckily there are tables outside which would be great on a romantic summers night.
