Spot on colour to example I sent through of the desired semi-naked frosting and don't get me started on the taste...I had three slices of the Choc Genache in one sitting! Nico & I ordered the most incredible triple layer baked cheesecake for our wedding. It was THE MOST DELICIOUS baked cheesecake we have ever tasted - and there wasn't a crumb left at the end of the evening! Birdcage even left a little box filled with yummy goodies for us to enjoy after the wedding. Everything was just too perfect for words. Thank you for making our special day even more special.

There are two things I crave from here. The first being soft poached eggs on coconut bread (unusual but amazing) with hollandaise and smoke salmon. I have to get my fix of this at least once a month. The second being the butternut lentil wrap, it is so addictive. Sometimes when I’m not in the mood to eat out, I order this wrap on UberEats because it’s so damn good! The decor is adorable and you have to try one of their many cupcakes.
The best omelette I’ve had in Stellenbosch! Filled to the brim with the most delicious ingredients and worth every cent. Butternut and Feta Wrap is also a must-try.
Also, if you want to treat yourself add the Coconut Bread to any of the breakfasts and you won’t be sorry. All cakes/cupcakes are delicious and freshly baked, my personal favourite is any one of the cheesecakes on daily offer.
Whenever I'm in Stellenbosch I ensure that I make time to visit this gem. 🌠 Their food, especially the salad with smoked trout, is AMAZING! 😍 Their sweet goodies also never disappoint! 🍫🍰🎂 Prices are very reasonable, making it perfect for students. Decor is also beautiful. It really is the perfect place to go if you need a catch up session with someone. 🌸
We had the slow roasted pork belly with sweet potato mash and roasted dukkah and the toasted chicken mayo, bacon and parmesan sandwich.
Food tasted delicious - pork belly was extremely fatty though (counted in our favor, although some may find it overpowering) and the toastie was great - however I couldn’t really taste the Parmesan at all?
Service was good (our waitress and the runner were lovely and the food came very quickly).
Ambience was great too, we sat upstairs and had to climb a wooden spiral staircase to get there. Was so original and fun 😊
Birdcage’s true specialty are their sweet things though - this will definitely warrant another visit!

Lovely decor, fast service and great coffee! I like that they had the coconut chia pudding for a vegan friendly option, but it really can use a bit more flair... The French toast was superb, moist, sweet and creamy goodness!
I love this place. It's beautifully decorated and feels like you've stepped into a little Cafe in France. I had their rocky roads cheesecake which was very nice and Rooibos tea which complimented the cake so well. Can't wait to go back!
my sweet tooth was in need of a cup of tea and cake. We have been spoilt many times at our office with the treats but never had the sit down experience because being a low carb eater the cakes are always out of the question. To my delight they make delicious Banting cheesecake - so divine - the crust is made with almonds and coconut flakes. Mmmmm sure to return for another bash. I do wish coffee shops would stock up more on Banting delights ;) thank you for the great service ...

Walking into The Birdcage, you find yourself in an urban wonderland. Quaint cake plates carrying treats almost too beautiful to eat, flavoured tea's that'll tickle your taste buds and friendly staff who can't other than put a smile on your face. That is what you'll find here!

Don't let the cute decor and throw cushions trick you into thinking their meals won't fill you. You get Value for money right here! Rugby boys will go home feeling full. Salmon Eggs Benedict, arguably the best in Stellenbosch at a mere R65 - the best thing is, they're not stingy with the Salmon. Ever tried coconut bread? It's on the menu. 😊👍🏻
I have a sweet tooth & this beautifully decorated coffee shop exceeded my expectations. The service is exceptional & the sweet treats are to die for. I enjoyed a slice of lemon meringue & homemade ice tea.

This is a quaint little bakery type café - the selection of cakes are delicious and if you're obsessed with cheesecake like me then don't deny yourself the one that the birdcage offers which is inlaid with koeksisters: decadent and delicious. Quite pricey.

Inside the big glass doors, one finds a little wonderland of the quaint and unique - think vintage meets serendipity. There is no doubt as to why this venue is very popular, even though they have relocated fairly recently.
There is space upstairs, do if the display of all their wonderful-looking desserts tempt you too much, you can go sit quietly in the corner.
Their breakfasts are not extensive, but the poached eggs and salmon with hollandaise are very satisfactory. I found their omelette to be slightly overdone, but the mushroom and feta filling redeems it.
On a sweeter note, their Rocky road was a tad bit disappointing, although very fairly priced. Their selection of cheesecakes and VERY yummy looking cupcakes (Think nutella and other delicious sounding flavours) I left alone and opted for a coffee milkshake that was exactly what I had been looking for on a hot summery afternoon.
The staff are quite friendly and happy to help.
Definitely a must, even if it is only to experience the atmosphere!!

This place is a lovely spot for coffee and cake. The baked goods are all freshly made at the restaurant, you can even look through the glass into part of the kitchen and see the making of cakes, cupcakes and all sorts of delicious treats. They also have a menu that offers breakfast and lunch. My go to breakfast is the omelette with mozzarella, mushrooms and feta-it is so yummy and the portion as well as the filling is very generous. On one occasion for lunch, I ordered the quiche which was disappointing as it was dry. Overall, the food is very good and this place has the best red velvet cake in town! This is a place you'll go to over and over again and always enjoy.

I've been a bit disappointed with birdcage recently. It was my favorite place to eat but has become so expensive. The cakes are really good but they are way too expensive for any of us to afford anymore. I found the breakfasts are also very pricy, and not as good as other restaurants charging the same amount. The decor is gorgeous and the cupcakes are still reasonable, which makes this a nice place for tea but perhaps not for a meal
As you walk into this place, it's as if you are in a dream world. The cakes and treats are impeccable, so delicious and mouthwatering! I will definitely be back.
To me, this place has the best cupcakes I've ever tasted. Their range of cheesecakes are also spectacular. Whenever we're in stellenbosch we make a point of stopping in I pick up a bunch of treats for the day.
This is possibly the quaintest little coffee shop around. They serve the most decadent cupcakes here and you'll almost feel like you're eating in a doll house. The decor that surrounds you is for sale and you have to get someone to literally pull you away before you buy the whole shop!

The birdcage is just so quaint and pretty you'll feel like ladylike and girly the minute you walk in. I promise you I considered putting my hair in pig tails- and I mean that in the best way possible.
Good coffee and tea, and some yummy cafe style food makes it a firm favorite in Stellies. I often go there to meet some of the girls for an afternoon tea, with a cupcake - obvs. It's not too pretty for the boys either, and I've seen my fair share of dudes enjoying a manly cupcake date there.
As a quick treat from the office to celebrate my engagement, we got cupcakes from The Birdcage. My salted caramel cupcake was the perfect balance of sweet and salty, and perfectly made. Only downside? Small coffees.

The Birdcage is the absolute ultimate coffee and cake place for ladies to meet up! Ideally situated and serving the tastiest of treats, it is also a popular place to hold birthday parties, engagement parties and any other event where ladies deserve to be treated to great coffee and cake!
It is obvious that great effort was made with the detailed interior decoration to create a perfect antique but warm feel. Adjacent to the room where the dining tables are located, are a few rooms displaying antique items that can be bought at a fair price.
The Birdcage is renowned for their most amazing cupcakes - peppermint aero, rolo, red velvet, chocolate, marble, vanilla ... topped with the richest, creamiest icing and usually with a hidden centre of caramel! Although pricey at more than R15 for one, it is definitely worth it! They also have the best cheesecake I've ever tasted, a caramel pecan cheesecake but you have to go early because it usually sells out before lunchtime - you have been warned! There are a great selection of cookies and other cakes also available. The homemade ice tea is refreshing and there's an awesome selection of Dilmah teas available at a great price per pot.
Although it seems a very feminine place, I've even taken my boyfriend there for lunch and he enjoyed it! I had the tomato soup and it was a nice light meal, leaving just enough room for that divine cheesecake. He had some dark chocolate cookies and still remembers how good they were!
Be sure to head over early on Saturdays as they close at 1pm! They also have catering services and sometimes sell at food markets around the Stellenbosch area so keep an eye out for them.
A friend of mine told me about this place, so we tried it out today. I can proudly give them a 5-star rating. Had a good and easy accessible table, our waitress was friendly, informed, and gave us diligent service. I was expecting quite a hefty bill with the treats we ordered, but to my surprise they were right on par. Not something you find every day in the Cape Town food/entertainment industry. The cupcakes were fresh, well balanced taste, even for something like a lemon meringue or a rolo cupcake. Amazing coffee, made the way it should be!! All around a great coffee shop or restaurant for a nice meal!

My sister and I are such foodies and we decided to try this place out for the first time. It was superb- the decor as well as the attention to detail with the food was very well done. The bacon was crispy, the bread was fresh, the cutlery was properly cleaned and beautiful. We had the most amazing experience and we will definately be going back.

The waiters are all very attentive and friendly so the service was excellent and quick if I might add.
The food is very reasonable priced and it is delicious. I had a sourdough toasted sandwich and it was perfect. This place has great choices for the health conscious as well as for the person just looking for a treat.
I also had the caramel banana tart and it was a borderline spiritual experience. So you will not be disappointed if you grab a bite to eat here.
Besides having sweet treats that you can take home like cheesecake, tarts and cookies; there are also a few bespoke bits and bobs around the cafe that you can purchase.

This is my favourite breakfast spot. It's the whole package, very cute, good service, and great food. But don't forget to leave with some cakes and sweets, that's the best part. On the days they have Macaroons on display, buy them all.
The wonderful team at Birdcage made my wedding cake. I organised the wedding from overseas and they were extremely helpful and most important of all, they made one of the best cakes I have tasted in my life! My guests couldn't stop talking about the cake ;) To top it all off was the very special beautifully packaged box of cake the team gave my husband and I to enjoy after the wedding. I cannot recommend this place and their team enough.
Family and I came here for Youth Day for brunch. Lovely decorated restaurant cafe with 2 floors. A fairly large selection of eats to choose from as well as a wide variety of breads to have including coconut bread which is a must try. Their scrambled eggs with bacon and avo in a croissant is delicious and one I would definitely recommend. Great Place, great food and trendy vibe.

Located in the middle of Stellenbosch it is a MUST! Even if you just go and grab a take away. I would recommend you to make 30 minutes of your time/trip available and invest it here. Quaint spot tucked down an alley in Stellies. Had the biggest scone, was yummy but too much for one so shared with the parking attendant. The decor items and baked goodies are lovely.

Honestly such a special little restaurant. Tucked away in the heart of stellenbosch. Best cheese cake I have ever had. Slightly on the expensive side but food is wonderful and atmosphere really is cozy and cute. Be sure to visit.
What a wonderful surprise tucked away in an alley of Stellenbosch's center. Ordered standard breakfast fare and was blown away by the presentation, flavours, and food quality. Also, a great ambience for small groups and attentive service. Highly recommend!
