Super food, friendly & helpful staff, wonderful service. We were a large table & our service was spot on. Not a single order/request went awry. Our food - snails & steak were cooked to perfection. You made sitting in 30+ degree evening heat a breeze. Thank you.
What a fantastic restaurant. It never disappoints. My husband and I recently ate there again for our wedding anniversary and we had a fantastic time. The waitress was very friendly, our food was just great and the complimentary chocolate vodka was to die for. The decor is great and it makes you feel at home. One of my top places to eat.
It takes alot to please me when I go out to eat, first thing service. But husser grill keep on surprising me, excellent service. Friendly staff and the best food ever, and the fact that the stunning manager is always there to greet, makes the atmosphere more great.
Really good food and excellent service. Highly recommend this place.

It was a cold Sunday afternoon in stellenbosch on the 4th of June..we immediately felt the warmth upon entering.friendly, well trained staff and great steaks and game.from starter to desert we had a blast! It was my wife's birthday and we had a memorable moment at the hussar grill!!!
Absolutely amazing food, our waitress Shannon was really professional and really good, food is always great thanks !!!
Always a winner, great food and good friendly service! No corkage charge and love the free chocolate vodka and cream drinks for dessert.
Had our 3year wedding anniversary last night. The ribeye I had was excellent. Also the waiter we had ( I think Sume was her name) was very friendly and helpful. Love the warm, friendly atmosphere. Will definitely visit again.

Amazing staff " Claire our waitress was amazing and the steak at Hussar Grill is phenomenal!!!
I love this restaurant. I always come here with my mother when she is in town. They serve amazing fillets, sirloins and rumps. Their sauces are also to-die-for it definitely best of all is their chocolate fondant dessert.
Lovely intimate space inside with beautiful wooden bar. Always busy so do make a reservation. The 🥩 meat is absolutely incredible! Try the bitterballen or tomato soup for starters. The best cut is sirloin on the bone. Great service, atmosphere, food and location. A real gem
Definately a good spot to spend with friends, a glass of wine and some mouth watering steak. The venue reminds me of an old English pub and is stacked with old books and wine bottles. I had the mushroom fillet with salad on the side - salad is definitely a good contrast to the meal. The steak was perfectly cooked (medium). The mushroom sauce could of used more salt but otherwise a good meal.
Oh btw! We got complimentary liquid chocolate vodka drinks that tasted like a semi dark chocolate pudding...it was so good!
We celebrated a friend’s birthday on Sunday. Such a beautiful restaurant with excellent service. The waiter was friendly and very attentive to us. Variety on the menu made for a good dining experience. Overall a place with a warm homely feeling and good food. Will definitely visit again.
Love this place . We took an outside table so was nice to see the people strolling by and enjoyed the tranquility. Didn't have any starters. We had complementary sweet potato crisps with olives. For mains I had the Fillet Bearnsise...absolutely delish. My hubby had the Fillet on the bone which he also enjoyed. For dessert i highly recommend the Hussar Grill Icecream Dessert. It's vanilla icecream with peanut brittle, marshmallow, nougat, honeycomb and sprinkled with nuts and drizzled with dark chocolate. Totally yummy. Staff are friendly and very attentive. Would highly recommend this place
Had a good night out with the family. The food was good - I had the fillet with mushroom and truffle sauce. Off the charts!!! The sauce was amazing and the quality of the steak even better!! The ambiance was a bit load and the restaurant slightly over crowded. But a really good evening
I find this little spot endlessly romantic thanks to its courtyard setting in the heart of Stellenbosch. Their steak is always a winning menu item, although their chateaubriand done medium rare is a personal favourite.
My husband and I dined here for our 1 year anniversary. It was not only the best steak I have had in years , but the service and over all experience was absolutely amazing.
Good restaurant and service overall
Nice atmosphere and ambience
Would recommend - friendly staff
Good location
Our all time favorite restaurant in the whole world ! We celebrate birthdays, anniversaries and all possible reasons in it. Food amazing, stakes always perfect. Service is better when owner is there.
I used to work at this particular establishment so I might be slightly biased, but I promise I won't state anything but facts here.
The food is done to perfection every single time. And if it's not, trust me, someone will get in serious trouble for it. They really pride themselves in customer service.
On that note, expect your waiter to know everything about the menu, the wine, the quality of meat etc. It's not your everyday café staff... These people are well trained and work hard to deserve your compensation.
It's always fully booked, so be proactive and book a day or two in advance.
Damn good food like this doesn't come with a bargain price tag though, so bring your sugar daddy! On the upside, they don't charge corkage, no matter how many bottles you bring.
P.S. Their kitchen gets scrubbed from top to bottom every single night after service, so it's not only a great eating and drinking experience you're in for, but a totally hygienic one too. If you're into that ;)
You can never go wrong with Hussar. The meat, service and wine is just always on point! This is really a place where you know you will have a good meal. Its just a pity that you have to book in advance, because its always fully booked. Brent Neethling
Absolutely hands-down my favourite restaurant in Stellenbosch. Their meat is generally aged around 32-38 days, and before ordering you can be shown the cuts if the day. Perfect atmosphere that is reminiscent of a cozy dining library room. The service is impeccable and the managers are always on duty. Incredible place for both closing business deals and romantic getaways.

I just need it to be said, never have I been to Stellenbosch Hussar's Grill and been disappointed! Always a great experience overall. The steaks are always top notch 👍🏻
I've been to the Hussar in both Camps Bay and Bellville, so this was my third visit to this legendary steakhouse. So far I've never been disappointed, but mind you, Stellenbosch's outlet definitely stands out among the rest!
We arrived very late - a few minutes before 22:00, since we had gone to watch the Varsity Cup final and then faced some heavy traffic afterwards. After waiting forever just to get out of our parking space, we decided it would be quicker to walk. Hence we arrived fashionably late. Upon arriving, we were told that the kitchen actually closes at 22:00, but they understood our predicament and were more than happy to serve us nonetheless.
The table was already set with snacks of olives, droewors and vegetable chips when we arrived, which was devoured within minutes, since we were very hungry. Our drinks were brought out in a blink of an eye, which was closely followed by our food.
You simply can't go wrong with a generous portion of steak at Hussar's! I ordered the Hussar Carpetbagger and my oh my was it good! I'm not a huge fan of red meat in general, but the stuffing of oysters and cheese sauce, although at first a seemingly strange combination, worked perfectly with the juicy fillet. Personally I would've preferred it to be cut slightly thinner, but that's just personal preference. The chef even came to us afterwards to ask how our food was, telling us that he was so happy to cook for us because they had just gotten in some fresh meat. Now that's what I call quality service!
Along with our coffees to finish the night off, we were each given a complimentary chocolate vodka. I've been itching to try it and see what all of the fuss was about... Now I know. Absolute liquid heaven! The fact that it's made from REAL chocolate and not just chocolate flavored vodka really does take this after dinner delight to the next level. I highly recommend you give it a try!
To top the evening's dining experience off, I must say that the service was top notch! Even though we arrived very late and kept the staff there past their bedtimes, not once did they seem impatient with us. They constantly checked on us and really made us feel welcome and cared for. A 5/5 in this department!
Overall, if you looking for a delicious steak accompanied by delicious and generous portions of spinach and butternut (and perhaps a chocolate vodka to satisfy your sweet tooth), Hussar Grill is the place to go! And if you're looking for the best one around... This one in Stellenbosch by far takes the cake!
I ate the lamb shank it was very good and service was great! Mmmm I don't quite think it was any better than a normal grill house! I was expecting amazing! It is good but I was a little disappointed.
Very friendly and efficient waiter. The grilled mushroom starter was very tasty. The Steak was good (Sirloin on the bone) served with mash. I have had better steak elsewhere (at Nelsons Eye in Cape Town for example), but I did enjoy this one at the Hussar. I got a truffle mushroom sauce to go with the steak. It was creamy and delicious (but very rich - so maybe the plain mushroom sauce would've been a better choice). The onion rings were good. Crispy and not at all oily which is a big plus. The cinnamon butternut (at an extra R20) was delicious and a generous portion (enough for 2 people to share). All in all a nice lunch experience. Red wine was superb. A bit pricey at R350 a bottle, but good nevertheless.
Very good food. Served plain and simple to allow the protein to shine. Good service, relaxed atmosphere. Meat dishes definitely were favorited at our table while my fish was okay. Can't have half and half sides (it's either or) which was a little disappointed about but all round a lovely evening.
The Hussar Grill is certainly my favourite place to eat steaks and red meat. The restaurant is pure quality, serving really great food and although it is quite pricey, it's well worth the trip
Brilliant.. part of the best food franchise in South Africa.. 😆 The quality of steak is yet to be beat in South Africa.. what a franchise, my once a month special place...
This is a very nice restaurant. Come here to eat a nice piece of steak. The food was delicious. The steakhouse has a very warm, family-owned tipe of vibe. Little bit on the expensive side, but perfect for that special occasion. The staff were very professional, albeit not overly friendly and the service was average.
They are one of the best stake houses around. The drinks are great, the meat is outstanding. The atmosphere is nice and relaxed. The only problem I have is the setting and space in there. A little compressed if you ask me.
Quality food! The steak is amazing and their wine selection is fantastic. Perfect for a romantic dinner for two! Always a a good sign when it's necessary to book for a reservation in fear of not getting a spot of you don't.
In spite of the load shedding during our meal they were able to serve most of their menu. Sadly the one thing on the menu I eat was one of those they couldn't make. Lovely meal nonetheless.
Hussar is a traditional steakhouse type if place, wide selection of wine but also interestingly enough the sign on their door stares that they will never charge a corkage fee so you can just bring your wine if you so wish at no additional cost. We were so wined out from our wine tasting so just had water! They also have nice snacks on the table such as biltong and sweet potatoe chips, we wolfed it all down as all the wine tasting had given us quite an appetite. Hubster had a T-bone steak, I had lamb chops- both meals were good, standard grill fare that we know. It was accompanied by mash or chips and we ordered an extra side of butternut and creamed spinach.
I first ate at the Hussar Grill in Rondebosch in 2004, and to remember a meal had ten years ago means it must have left a lasting impression.
Upon arrival at the Stellenbosch branch we were graciously greeted by the hostess and shown to our table. For me, a lot lies in the details, and I was not to be disappointed. Crisp white table clothes, beautiful wine glasses and then the bowls of olives and sweet potato crisps already waiting on the table. And not just any olives and crisps, really good ones, which we devoured in a flash. I was ravenous and keen to get in our order of wine so we could proceed to eat. The wine list had a good selection and we settled on a bottle of Pinotage which we thought would fair well with most of what was on the menu, well certainly with what we were going to eat.
There were a few favourites I could not wait to indulge in, so the crumbed camembert on cranberry sauce was the chosen starter. This is the very first thing I had eaten at The Hussar those ten years ago and I was hoping I would enjoy it as much this time as I did then. I can say, which is saying something, that I perhaps enjoyed it even more this time. The crumbed exterior was crisp and golden, and the the soft elasticity of the perfectly cooked cheese on the inside was heavenly, this together with the cranberry sauce scooped up onto little pieces of toasted baguette was simply delicious. It was one of those moments, where I at one point wanted to voice that I thought another one was in order, but then remembering the generous main course portion sizes, thought it best to refrain. I needed to keep space for what was to come. That, I tell you, was a wise decision, because what did arrive for main course, for just two, could probably have fed at least three...okay so perhaps the order of a 600g portion of warthog ribs and the 300g fillet on the bone with truffle mushroom sauce, two portions of fries and a side of veg was a bit much but we sure did give it a good go. Every single bite of those dishes and their sides had me making noises highly inappropriate for a restaurant, but it was just that good. The warthog ribs were deboned and the rich basting sauce almost caramalised onto the outside. The fat had been nicely rendered and all of that flavour transferred into the meat.
Then there was the fillet on the bone, which was quite something else. The meat was so full of flavour that even when taking a bite drenched with the truflle mushroom sauce it held it's own, at no point did the sauce overpower this cut, it in fact served to balance and compliment so well. It was also of course cooked to perfection. The sides do need a mention too, the fries were straight cut, salted and served wrapped in wax paper in a silver cup, again, I love the details, and the creamed spinach and cinnamon laced pureed butternut, simple, yet so satisfying. Then to finish dom pedro's, one with whiskey, one with Kahlua, oh, and chocolate shots on the side, the perfect end to the perfect meal and one of my favourite dining experiences.
Since first posting this on my own site I have returned a couple of times, each time as good as the first. Make sure to call ahead to book, this place gets very busy, and rightly so. The food deserves it!
Excellent red meat backed up with excellent service. No charge for bringing your own wine the cherry on top! On of the busiest restaurants in stellenbosch so booking is advised.
UPDATE: We went back here for Mother's Day and had a great experience. The service was exceptional and the food was unbelievable. I had the fillet on the bone and I'm not sure I've had more tender beef (though, you might want to ask them to to cook it medium or medium well). And you really should order your steak with the truffle portobello mushroom sauce. Sooooo good.
ORIGINAL: Great food and nice atmosphere. We sat inside which was nice, but there is also a very nice back patio area.
I ordered the large filet which was cooked beautifully with an amazing sauce. BUT... Sadly, I found an unsightly HAIR in my food! What a shame...
The Hussar Grill in Stellenbosch is quite simply amazing.
When you arrive: You are served olives, chips and bits of droewors as well as a small glass of sherry each. I found this to be such a lovely touch and it really makes you feel as if the restaurant looks after it's customers.
I ordered a steak and it was honestly one of the best steaks I've ever eaten. Their food is truly amazing and the waitress went out of her way to make sure everything was just perfect.
After your mains, you are served a small martini glass of warm chocolate vodka. This is not your normal chocolate vodka. This is melted chocolate with vodka added. It is quite possibly the most divine thing you will ever taste.
Overall this restaurant has got amazing food, superb service and a lovely atmosphere. It is a bit cramped with all the tables quite close to one another but the atmosphere makes it feel romantic and you really are made to feel very special there!
