Review Fat Butcher - Stellenbosch

Hidemi
I happened to pass by and decided to try this place just before 5 PM in the evening. I was informed that it gets crowded after 6 PM, being a Saturday. As the high ratings in the reviews suggest, I was thoroughly satisfied with everything. Not only was the quality of the meat superb, but I also enjoyed the perfect grilling and flavorful sauces. The desserts were incredibly cute too! Since I had already visited a winery and indulged in wine there, I didn't order any here, but I saw an impressive cellar, so I look forward to trying their wines next time.

Had the most delicious lunch with excellent service from Ian! I had the lamb lumb with sweet potato fries. The lamb was so tasty and succulent. The sweet potato fries were so divine as well. Will definitely recommend both! What topped the whole experience was the service from Ian. He was very polite and extremely attentive, keep up the 5 star service Ian!!!

Such a great ambiance, lovely setting and atmosphere. The attention to detail makes it an amazing dining experience! Thank you to Curtney, who was exceptional in making us feel welcome, taking care of us and looking after us during our dinner experience! Thank you Fat Butcher for an amazing evening out!

Excellent restaurant with high quality staff, service and food. Parking is available opposite to the restaurant. We really enjoyed this restaurant and the experience. It is highly advised to make a reservation upfront, but we were able to get a spot after 15 minutes of waiting while drinking something. Highly recommended!

I went to Fat Butcher last night for my daughter's 21st bday dinner. What a great experience. Amazing food, best steak ever. And the service was absolutely top notch. Our waitress was Fizzy and she was friendly, efficient and just an all round amazing waitress. I would definitely recommend Fat Butcher anytime. Well done!

Came in for dinner on the recommendation of a friend. This place is on her cape coast must visit list. And now it is on mine too! Ethan, our server, was delightful. He got us really pumped up for the meal and mad everything fun. The steak was insane. We picked from the specials. A 1kg picanha. And then some sides too. The spinach and corn in particular were great too. We were also upsold on a wine, which I was hesitant to get at first but was absolutely amazing and just took the whole meal to another level. The atmosphere was relaxed and lively. A place that knows they make incredible steaks but don’t take themselves too seriously either. Highly recommend.

One of the best Steak experiences I ever had in a restaurant. Good Job Boys and Girls. Thanks Jenna for the great Service. We will come back in a few years. 👍🙌❤️

Absolutely delicious. Very professional service. One of the best steaks I've ever had.

Kurt was the most fantastic waiter, our gateway into the stunning world that is Fat Butcher. His charisma and charm made us not want to leave, ever. He explained the meats, the meals, the details of green peppercorns and shiitake mushrooms. I could hardly stop myself from drooling. My son and daughter thoroughly enjoyed the terrific and phenomenal dining experience. My wife loved it too, and a happy wife is a happy life.

Ensure you book well in advance and hope that Fizzy serves you. The steak is amazing. Wonderful food, great service, beautiful ambience. Don't miss out if in Stellenbosch.

WOW WOW WOW!!!!! I have never had such a wonderful dinner in a long time. Service - friendly, knowledgeable and highly attentive. The food... well... the only way to describe it is utterly delectable. The steaks were amazing. The vegetables were perfectly Al dente. Even my dogs couldn't get enough of marrow bones and rib bones I brought home for them. The ambiance was on point. Everything was just perfect. I've been sending my hotel guests here forever. My only regret is that I didn't go there sooner. Well done. I will most definitely be back.

This place is amazing excellent service and food , attention to detail in all aspects of service, I highly recommend it, to have that meal in the UK would have been double the cost

We would highly recommend Fatbutcher in Stellenbosch to everyone. We celebrated my stepsons 21st birthday and needless to say the service, vibe and last but not least the food was absolutely fantastic. If they could they’d move mountains to make you happy! One of our family members mentioned to me her phone battery was about to die and our waiter whilst serving us overheard her and offered to charge it for her. Which he did. We also brought a cake which they offered to “dolly” up a bit for us, and wow what a job they did, with pretty flowers and all..they truly go the extra mile.. if you looking for a great restaurant that serves the most succulent delicious steaks in town and want to treat your family, friends or holiday guests, trust me you won’t be sorry if you take them to Fatbutcher. We will certainly be back again!
Bianca Forbes
The best mash on earth! I love this place and the steak plate they bring. The steak is always made right and oh so tender

Wish I could give it more than 5 stars. We were in Stellenbosch for a conference at the seminary. We ate at Fat Butcher on our last night after enduring the wonderful aromas each day as we walked past. Our meal exceeded every hopeful expectation. The service was great, the waiter was knowledgeable and attentive and the butternut salad and steaks were exceptional. The best meal I have had before or since. Fat Butcher has ruined steaks for us. We have dined at several restaurants since known for steak and our meals did not come close to the wonderful food at Fat Butcher. We only wish we didn't have to travel back from the US to eat there again. Bravo!!

Loved this place. The steaks and choice of were extremely good quality and good value for money. Busy buzzy vibe with very friendly informative staff. Highly recommend.

Baie baie dankie aan julle hele span. Was die beste verjaarsdag ooit. Julle span het uit julle pad uit gegaan om dit vir ons almal lekker te maak. Spesiaal gery om bestandele te gaan koop vir ons favorite cocktail (Martini Pornstar) Beste eet plek by vere!

Asked where we should eat in Stellies 1st, all replied "Fat Butcher". Great expectations are sometimes met with a epic fail....Best reception, curtious knowledgable and most professional "watroness" attended to us! Ambiance accompanied by most probably the best "Steak Tartare with Quale eggs" I have ever had in my live. As we were the 21:00 seating, with mains arriving just before 21:45, I think the chefs had had enough as our mains (Steaks) was by far the worst cooked meat I have had since moving to the Eastern Cape 4 years ago. When I requested for my meat to be just cooked a bit more, it arrived back absolutely cremated. Was informed by our waitress that Managers had allready left for the night. Maybe a long and hard day for the kitchen....., but it is then that your kitchen should produce, and not when the going is easy.......will definitely revisit as I feel this was not a normal service for such a highly rated eatery in Stellies!!!

The most amazing Foodie experience ever, from the lovely decor and setting, to smiles and banter from all staff and a superb waitron. The food was really amazing and the pairings recommended were mouth-watering. Loved every minute at this establishment and will definitely be back.
Gill Maree
The most amazing service and experience! I thort I was in “Master cheff” I had the smoked trout which was to die for. My family members had steak. All out of this world food! I loved the sweetie jars offered to us as we left! A MUST Restaurant for anyone visiting Stellenbosch!

Coming from Namibia, need is an essential. This place definitely changed my mind. Our waiter Armand very competent and served well. Will definitely be coming back.

I loved everything about the FatButcher. I've wanted to check out the restaurant since it opened but was happy that I waited. (It was worth the wait!) Last nights food was delicious, Brett our waiter was attentive, and the vibe was amazing! It was my cousins birthday and they decorated and gave her a complimentary slice of cheesecake! Wow! I'm definitely going back!
Brack Tommie
The steaks here are as good a quality as anywhere in the world. The staff was welcoming, attentive and overall great as well. The entire experience was top notch from start to finish!
Robert Miller
Amazing food, great venue and service. Can highly recommend the beef cheeks and the ribeye.
James Carruthers
Easily the best steak I have ever eaten! I would be back for dinner if they weren’t booked out.

After visiting Anthonij Rupert's winefarm we were recommended to dine at The Fat Butcher. We called ahead to be informed fully booked. As it was late afternoon around 16h30 we were informed that walk ins before 6pm could get a table outside. We immediately proceeded to arrive before 5pm (with loads of tables empty and all street tables unoccupied). We were promptly turned away (we were well dressed, haha incase you wondering). When I questioned the open walk in tables I was told they were just taken. I even said we had just called but were stone walled! We left very disappointed. My feelings regarding a clear 'attitude' of the restaurant is favouring foreign visitors (we are RSA) was just confirmed when (after receiving food poisoning from another reataurant in town, which has had me left room bound today) the manageress from my boutique hotel (who has been looking so nicely after me <br/>) mentioned they are ALWAYS asked by The Fat Butcher whether they are requesting booking for a foereign tourist or a South African! Shame on you! SIES!<br/>P.S. same tables were still unoccupied when we returned to our car after dinner ...

T-Bone for 2 out of this world and good value!
Caglar.Ordu
Awesome steaks and everything was perfect, but the average spending of R250 for two person rated here is ridiculous. It should be minimum of R500.

Every time I come back to Stellenbosch I try to make my way to this restaurant (If they aren't fully booked). I have been home for 10 weeks now and been here 3 times. They source fantastic meat and their sides are to die for. I usually go for a plain Rump, Medium rare with Parmesan Mash as well as Braaibroodjies on the side. I tell everyone I know that visits Stellenbosch to try and go here because it is just too good to miss.
Retha Van Der Walt
Our second visit and I am glad to say it was just as amazing as I remembered our first visit. From the moment we entered the premises it was an experience. Skaapstertjies as n starter set the bar rather high. The cauliflower soup was out of this world and a definite must. Meat was prepared spot on and the service ambassador excelled in brilliant service.<br/><br/>Wine collection is what one expect from a top class restaurant in the heart of the winelands. To make this experience even more worthwhile is the fact that prices are really well priced. Next time we in Cape Town we will make the drive again!
Robyn Le Roux
Full marks and ticks all the boxes. Food was amazing- cooked to perfection and flavourful. Menu is humble compared to the taste experience which is indescribable. Service was excellent with a great presentation of the various meat cuts . Ambiance is perfect, setting is ideal and stunning décor. A place worthy of one's time. Definitely worth every penny!

I’m really impressed with the fat butcher. The service was amazing and the food absolutely delicious. I especially loved the mushroom sauce on my steak. We had milkshakes afterwards and they were so thick and creamy - definitely share these as they are huge. The courtyard is stunning and next time I would love to sit out there.

I really really wanted to love this place, I didn't but I will go back to do it right.<br/><br/>Went for lunch and I made a mistake. It was hot so I was wanting something light like seafood.... Yes I know, you don't order something that's not the restaurant's specialty and that was my fault. I did however ask the waiter about the seafood options and if he thought I should order that instead of what they're known for. He agreed that it being so hot seafood is a good option and he confirmed their seafood is great. So against better judgment, I ordered the starter mussels and starter calamari.<br/><br/>The was absolutely nothing special about the calamari. No seasoning or spice that it was fried it. The mussels were good, I would have just liked the sauce to be a bit thicker.<br/><br/>With it being summer, I get that flies are a problem especially seeing that we sat outside. But a fly landed on half of my toast that I was saving for last to dip in the mussel sauce. Because the toast was soggy it got stuck there and I'm assuming died full and happy. I didn't bother mentioning it to the waiter as I was already halfway through the mussels but that was annoying.<br/><br/>Now the good, the seating outside is very pretty, service excellent, great wine selection and my bf's steak was amazing. He ordered one of their signature steaks, 300g fillet with peppercorn sauce, I was only given one bite but damn, it was good.<br/>

Had such a good time at The Fat Butcher with my boyfriend and his family. <br/>Meat was prepared absolutely beautifully. Lovely sauces. <br/>The Fat Butcher Salad is an incredible starter for the table. The breads are divine.
Jomari Steyn
This was absolutely an experience to never forget! We had dinner with friends and the food, drinks and dessert complimented the whole evening! The steak was perfectly cooked and the milk tart parcels were an absolute treat!
Esmari Robertson
Best steak I have had, maybe ever! Great service, fabulous location in this amazing old Stellenbosch building and fabulous interior, mixing the old with the new!! Cant wait to go back!!
Brad
Wow, we tried beef cheeks, lamb tails and just continued, absolutely brilliant, the flavour of food here has to be the best we have tried and the service to match, <br/>well done.
Eelen Lim
Surprised at the rating giving in Google. <br/><br/>While the starters were good ( chicken liver and snails) the main was a huge disappointment. We ordered the dry aged rib eye and it was so underwhelming for a piece of dry aged. The cook on the beef was perfect well charred but the meat just has no flavour and was bland. <br/><br/>Service was good at the restaurant but I was totally disappointed when I started on the mains.
Gary Hoon
Strangely underwhelming<br/><br/>The place was fully booked when I called in, and I only managed to secure a table walking in at 6pm. <br/><br/>Although all the signs were promising, unfortunately the steak left much to be desired. <br/><br/>Fully booked ✔️<br/>Extensive wine list ✔️<br/>Good bread ✔️<br/>Excellent starters ✔️<br/>Steak cooked on the bone ✔️<br/>Steak served with grilled bone marrow ✔️<br/>Fantastic steak? Not so much....❌<br/><br/>The chicken livers were absolutely fantastic, served in a spicy cream sauce with onions and a shard of charred baguette. <br/><br/>The snails were oddly totally unseasoned, and we had to put in some elbow grease working the salt grinder to balance out the dish. This was a precursor to the star of the show later...<br/><br/>The steak was served under seasoned, slightly overdone and totally bereft of any flavor. This was despite it being listed as a dry-aged cote-de-beouf. <br/><br/>Disappointing, as we were totally looking forward to an excellent steak dinner (looking at the previous reviews). <br/><br/>An off-day for the restaurant? I sure hope so!<br/><br/>
Theloveofgoodfood
If you want real good, no make that great, meat, grilled to perfection, there is only one place to go in Stellenbosch and that’s the Fat Butcher. <br/><br/>Staff are always friendly and helpful, but be warned that The Fat Butcher fills up fast, especially over weekends so BOOK to avoid disappointment. <br/><br/>You can quite honestly count on almost every dish on the menu. As I said, all meats, the rib eye is my favourite, are deliciously prepared and the sides are generous. <br/><br/>Warm, welcoming atmosphere, perfect for family and/or friends. <br/><br/>It is a bit on the expensive side, so if you’re a student or on a tight budget, save this restaurant for a special occasion.

Food and ambience amazing !! <br/>Love love love !!!<br/>Will be back soon 💕 without a doubt <br/>I would drive all the way from Cape Town to Stellies for their steak and I ain’t joking .. it’s without a doubt the best steak I’ve had 😬<br/><br/>You will not be disappointed.
Claire Ebersohn
Aaamazing steak!!! Wonderful ambience.. you can see a lot of thought was put in this restaurant- a lot attention to detail. A must if you are in Stellenbosch
Vinolin Naidoo
Best steak I had in my life! I ordered the New York Cut, with Parmesan mash and green Madagascan peppercorn sauce, medium. Absolutely mouth watering. Cooked to perfection, excellent balance on flavour from the steak and the sauces. The mash was light and fluffy. Excellent service. Definitely will be back there

First time dining over the weekend and it won’t be my last. Awesome food and excellent service. Quite a long waiting time for food but the food is worth the wait.
Stirling Craig
Absolutely lovely atmosphere. Food was to die for and had a great wine selection. We had the pork and 3 steaks and everyone had only great things to say. The desert was mouth watering too.
Demi De Freitas
Waiters are very professional and polite. The fillet was the best I've ever had, I was even lucky enough to get 2 bone marrow. Yes, every steak comes with roasted bone marrow, and it is life. The lamb shank was out of this world, and the sweet potato fries were the best I've ever had. Big ups on the dessert too. Good experience all round
Retha Van Der Walt
Wow what an experience! From the first step into the characteristic and warm ambience, I was impressed. The welcoming from all staff. Their knowledge and service levels are notable. The owner's passion is evident in the pride staff is showing. The food is really worth every cent and more. Small little detail in resentation is pre-empting the taste bud journey that is about to follow. Our party of 4 had starters if "skaapstertjies" and mussels, followed by various cuts of succulent meat cooked to perfection. I had the sweet patatoe fries as a side and my perfectly cooked New York cut sirloin with the truffle mushroom sauce was delicious. We finished off a culinary explosion with Panna cotta and chocolate brownies presented with absolute style.<br/>The only criticism I can raise is that they did have any non alcoholic beer on the menu but for the rest perfect! South African cuisine at its best
Esme Odendaal
No vegetarian option except for ONLY a boring little bowl of veg of steamed broccoli/courgettes and a baked potato with really boring greek salad. Please get some real advice how to cook a simple but beautiful meal for vegetarians. Hopefully the fat butcher is FAT because of awesome food and not just awesome meat. Get a good chef to advise......Boring to join a group and watch them eat without being happy to be there!
Sarahpepworth1
I had a lovely rump steak cooked to perfection with the most to die for Fat Butcher fries with a side of bernaise sauce - truly the best restaurant in town! The service is excellent and I can definitely recommend the Mooi Plaas Sauvignon Blanc - suggested by our waiter Nico, who was extremely well informed of any questions we had as to the wine selection
Ebert Vermeulen
One of the best restaurants in Cape Town area, definitely worth a visit if you want exceptional meats and wines from the region. Staff is also very friendly and knowledgable👍🏻🍻
Davearicardo
Good ambiance, good wine and good food. A nice addition is the marrow bone that accompanies the steak as well as the barbecue sauce. Had to send our steaks back as it was not cooked to perfection. Requested medium steak and got medium rare. Got it right the 2nd time. Enjoyed the steak. Desserts menu need some work though.
Anni
An absolute favorite because they get the service so right. The meat and food are excellent quality, the “no corkage charge” is fabulous, but what makes this our preferred spot is the amazing customer intimacy they consistently achieve. We’re have never left here unsatisfied ❤️ ... and we have been here very often
Rochelle Van Rooyen
Fantastic evening spent at the Fat Butcher. We arrived with one more person than we booked for. Even though they were fully booked they still made a plan to accommodate us. Later on when other customers left they added another table so that we could be more comfortable. Two different appetizers were served complimentary as part of their welcoming including hot towels to clean you hands. We brought our own wine, no corkage is charged. The service was superb and very efficient. The food was amazing. We had steaks which was cooked to perfection and the side dishes were amazing. I will recommend this to anyone and will definitely be back again. Price wise it is very affordable in terms of the quality of food and service you get. Can't wait to go back!
Amy Lembke
We arrived with no booking but were seated in the beautiful courtyard after just minutes of waiting. The service was wonderful, ambience delightful and the food was beautifully presented. Highlights of the meal for us were the butternut salad as an entree and the lamb shank. I personally had the ribs which came highly recommended however, I felt that they were not quite as tender as I was expecting. <br/><br/>Wine recommendations from there waitress were both delicious, we were too full to try dessert unfortunately. Overall, a very nice restaurant and I would highly recommend when in Stellenbosch.
Amy Wardle
As Pescatarians, we had the most amazing meal! Our waiter, Nico, was well informed and had an amazing personality. The wine list is more of a booklet, as it should be in Stellenbosch. We had the calamari starter and the mussels main(stunning sauce) . The meat eaters at the table were very impressed by the in-depth explanation of each cut and the variety! Will definitely recommend for it’s stunning atmosphere, great wine list, well thought out menu and the staff are informative!
Jolene
Accidentally stumbled upon this gem while in Cape Town recently. The setting was beautiful and our waitress was amazing! I had the Cote de Beouf 600g with parmesan mash and it was the best meal I had the entire trip!
Kirsten
The setting is beautiful, the service is great and the food was awesome .....................................................,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Stephanie Van Zyl
Rump steak was tough and VERY tasteless. Truffle mushroom sauce was white button mushrooms and also tasteless. Parmesan mash was cold and also very tasteless. Shavings of hard Parmesan over flavourless mash. Although the service was great, our food took two long hours because they lost our slip. First and last time here.
Adele Du Toit
Great vibe, fantastic food, special place in a special town! I ate here twice this week and the red meat is truly exceptional. I had the t-bone and rib eye and both were done to perfection. It is fantastic that they serve all meat dishes with marrow bone. Meat super food 😋. The fried calamari starter was super tender. Excellent spot, highly recommended
Gillian Trollope
This is hands down the best steak house I have ever been to. The service was really good, I never had to fill up my own wine glass. Our waiter was very knowledgeable on the wine list and the meat available. I ordered the aged sirloin on the bone which was cooked to perfection. All the steaks are accompanied with a piece of bone barrow which was out of this world. Great ambiance and well thought of decor. I will hopefully be back very soon.
Gergana Young
The dessert was amazing. Their aged new york sirloin, that my husband had, was also really good. However, I felt that my fillet was a little bit dry and not very flavorful. The service was really good.
Barrie Barnard
This is just a fantastic restaurant, stunning atmosphere, sublime steaks, such attentive service and the nicest of small touches that will delight you. Go and experience it. Soon! Now! Yesterday!!

The Fat butcher in Stellenbosch is a real gem. The food is unbelievably tasty. If you love good quality meat, then you have to check out this place. I would recommend the ribs , really amazing, and even competes with Gibsons in CT. Another must have is their steak, wauw, tender, delicious, dripping with flavor. The service is really good, love how they bring out the cold meat and show you what you can order. Situated right in the heart of stellies.
Nicole Venter
Thomas was our very attentive waiter- he was also very knowledgeable on the extensive wine list. On a cold night in Stellenbosch - the first step into this restaurant is warm and inviting. Treated with a pea & ham soup (complimentary) and fresh bread, and an amazing menu - we started off with mussels (presented in a very deep pot but bursting with great garlic and leek flavours) and carpaccio (well presented, full of flavour, nice quail egg touch). For mains I ordered the sirloin on the bone, served with sweet potato fries and w nice chunk of bone marrow. I ordered the truffle mushroom sauce with it which was quite punchy but great! My partner ordered the Collins steak - green peppercorn sauce off the charts! For dessert - you can't go wrong with their freshly baked daily cheesecake. Beautifully presented with meringue spread on plate and fresh berries. <br/>All in all - this is definitely my fav place in Stellies!
Mariet Visser
The steak, sauce and veg was really very good, definitely worth it. The place looks stunning and can most certainly carry a great atmosphere. <br/><br/>That being said, their drinks and service require some attention. Both the Irish coffee and frangelico coffee were served a little on the lukewarm side. And not the nicest. The strawberry daquiry is pure syrup, way too sweet and not very tasty. We were seated in a doorway, with constant passers through, even though many other tables were available. The service was rather slow and lacked friendliness.
Christoffel Goosen
This place is as boutique as it gets. The interior clearly required a lot of thought. The theme is spot on along with the design that carries it beautifully. It is rare that we go to restaurants and order veg foods that are well considered. This place, being a meat focused restaurant, catered BEAUTIFULLY for us with their delicious veg dish. The plate was a piece of art, and super tasty. They also have a great selection of beers. <br/><br/>The service was very efficient. <br/><br/>Keep it up guys. You're great.
Trevor
Steak was in our sights as we visited this restaurant in Stellies <br/>We ordered the Cote de Boeuf 600g Beef fillet 300g All with bbq basting / blue cheese vodka sauce / peppercorn sauce<br/>Sides were fries and sweet potato chips<br/>Steaks were good but unfortunately the medium had to be returned to kitchen because it was too rare. Not ideal for a supposed " steak emporium "<br/>Desserts were Hagen Daz vanilla and chocolate ice cream<br/>Service was friendly and proficient <br/>Seems like quite a huge establishment as our dinner order took about a hour to be served. Far too long. So problems in kitchen I think.<br/>Otherwise not too shabby<br/>
Chantelle Potgieter
1st visit to The Fat Butcher and will most definitely be returning. The service was outstanding with friendly, attentive and well informed waiters. The decor is cosy and was really great with the wet and windy winter weather today. But it was the food that was simply superb. A flavourful generous salad, croquettes and crusty bread to start off our meal which was followed by a meat platter of marrowbones, sirloin and piccanha steaks, butters, sauces, crispy potatoes and veggies - ABSOLUTELY EXCEPTIONAL!!!

1st timers! Amazing food, amazing service... loved the full experience, but i would like to experience all the other areas and an error with the order, but great recovery at the sevice end... Thank you so much! :)
Jan Van Zyl
All I can say is lamb shank... this dish changed my life, I have never had any lamb that tasted as good as what was given to me at The Fat Butcher.<br/><br/>The ambience is really wonderful, a 'quiet' yet buzzy restaurant, with great service to compliment it.<br/><br/>Before ordering our mains, our waiter brought out different cuts of meat to explain the flavours and textures to expect.<br/><br/>Sweet potato fries and mash with my meal was just delightful.<br/><br/>The rest of our table were equally impressed with the standard of this restaurant, and I will most certainly recommend it above the other steakhouses in Stellenbosch.
Carice De Jager
I can't fault anything about this place, their service and atmosphere is magnificent but their steak is literally the best I have ever had, especially since I NEVER order steak. Their sweet potatoe fries are really something too!
Natalie21j
Brilliant dining experience, we found this place through Zomato and it did not disappoint! The food was incredible, we had a specialty cut to share. The sides were amazing and ordered a half share of the mushroom risotto as an extra side and it was incredible. Furthermore, the staff were all kind, knowledgeable and passionate about the restaurant and products. Pretty aesthetic as well!
Jenisha Govender
Service, food and ambiance - 10/10. <br/>Had such an amazing dinner! Our waitress was so bubbly and gave us excellent recommendations. The calamari started was sublime! The sauce accompanied the calamari perfectly. We even ordered more bread to dip into the sauce! The mussels as a main was a massive portion with a yummy broth. I had a bite of my boyfriends steak and it was probably the best steak I've ever tasted. We were so stuffed after mains that we couldn't fit in dessert. Will definitely go back and try the dessert!
Nel
Absolutely amazing dinner! Honestly the meat was so tender and so fresh it just melted in my mouth- ordered a 200g beef filet with sweet potato fries (served with a bit of marrow) and it was honestly one of the best steaks I've ever had. Ordered medium rare, naturally. <br/>For dessert we ordered the cheesecake. Another dish to die for- it was served beautifully and tasted equally as lovely as it looked. <br/>Love the decor and aesthetic of the place- the bill came in an old book and it's all dark wood and candle lit bliss. Good wine list at that. Definitely recommend one visits this place asap.
Lee Kyle September
Some of the best ribs I've had!! Really good service, atmosphere and finger licking ribs. Would recommend it. Staff was helpful and friendly. Desert menu had some awesome chocolate brownies with caramel popcorn.
Kristina Keynikh
I`ve been there for the business meeting and we had a lot of talks going on  in our table. The meat was perfectly presented and all the options and specials were well explained so we didn`t even look at the menus and made our decisions very quick. The gentlemen were impressed with the size of the steak and struggled to finish it. When the food appeared I realized that I forgot to order for myself busy interpreting, the problem was quickly solved by our waiter and I had delicious meal in front of me in 5 minutes. <br/><br/>That was the best choice we could possibly make to impress our colleagues with the quality of food, good wine and high-standard service.
Corina Du Toit
Be warned! The portions here are generous! But delicious. As a gluten free eater I have no problem with the menu here. I have to admit, I have thought many times over that the burgers here look great enough top break my gluten fast for :) wine list is a bit limited though.
Niël Hamman
The best steak house in the western cape! Thank you for the professional yet heart warming service and food to die for! Any meat lovers dream!
Louw N
I decided to have dinner at The Fat Butcher Monday past by myself.<br/>From start to finish the hostess, waiter and management made for an exceptional dining experience. The food was out of this world. A big thank you to the waiter who served me he was extremely attentive throughout dinner and kept the Tequila flowing. A very well run restaurant without a doubt.<br/>I will be back soon!!!
Jan-Hendrik Vermaak
The atmosphere was good, service was very poor and the food was barely good. We were served ice cold Cabernet Sauvignon, a T-Bone that was overcooked and we had to request our drinks three times before the waiter eventually brought it incorrectly anyway. Very disappointed, but we were warned by the locals...
Wilmari Uys
The Fat Butcher is a great place to eat. The steak was very juicy and tasty. Waiters and managers are very friendly and attentive, making sure the customer has a good experience. This restaurant is a bit expensive but well worth the money spend!
Gustav Holtzhausen
Vibey. Fun. Authentic. Great steakhouse! Excellent service. All 5x meat dishes done to perfection. Get the butternut salad and sweet potato chips as a side dish. Wow! A must try! Local is lekker!
Raiatea Van Reenen
The service was excellent, love when a waiter makes you just feel welcome in a restaurant. He was Portuguese I think. The food itself is mouth watering. I had the calamari and my plate was clean in seconds. Great sized portions - really get value and quality for what you pay. The steaks were melt in your mouth tender. Definitely will go again!
Gordon Pretorius
Lovely place, very friendly staff, awesome setting. Food was great, combinations used for the burgers are quite different to the other places around stellies town, which makes it unique and very tasty. Loved it. If you are a burger / steak person, definitely give it a go.
Anzelle Pienaar
Best steak in the Western Cape!! Every visit was a memorable one. Service great and the waiters are knowledgeable on the menu and cuts. Atmosphere is light and relaxed. Management very involved and makes sure you are enjoying your time. I will definitely recommend the heart of the rump (to share with up to 4 people) it is big! T-Bone is great as well!

We were very excited for our dinner at Fat Butcher. We heard amazing things about the food and we were not disappointed. Quality of the meat and the preparation was excellent despite the fact that we had to send the sirlion on the bone back for being a bit cold.<br/><br/>However from entering the restaurant we had an immediate bad vibe from the 'teenager' that was hosting that night. Looking down his nose at us asking if we made a reservation. Immediately we felt unwelcome.<br/><br/>We arrived at 18:00 intending to have a drink before we order the meal. We were the only two people in the restaurant and we were promptly given the worst table in the restaurant. In a doorway with tables outside and no walkway area. I had to repeatedly move my chair so watrons an customers could pass.<br/><br/>I politely asked the host if we cannot sit somewhere else since we were the first two people there. Again answered with 'sorry no' all booked. Nevermind that we were first to arrive and no-one else were there yet.<br/><br/>Personally it took me about 45mins just to get over my anger for the pretentious attitude from a snobish host on a power trip. Spoiled our experience some what.<br/><br/>Yes we will return. Food was awesome. No corkage, fantastic. Service from our waitress excellent. Host unwelcoming and rude.<br/>

A fun new place in Stellbosch for sure. The fokof lager was brilliant and the chilli orange cocktail was not messing around. I had a burger and I was full after half the food on my plate, so come hungry. <br/>The staff was friendly and attentive and insisted we take as many sweets as possible. Check is out if you are in the area!

Honestly the best dining experience we have had in quite some time. Service is wonderful. The food is phenomenal and the portion sizes are super generous.

Oh my word!!!! This is possibly one of my new favourite places to go in Stellenbosch! My steak was cooked to perfection and their famous marinade is divine! But the best part of this restaurant is that, although they are a steakhouse, one can also enjoy their desserts and delicious cocktails and actually forget you're in a steakhouse! I had the Chili burn and Pornstar martini- both tasty, unique cocktails! And for dessert- quite possibly the BEST cheesecake I've had in my life! <br/><br/>It's also great that their service is always friendly and super efficient and professional. Whenever I enter the doors I am greeted with friendly smiles and warm welcomes by their highly knowledgeable staff. The decor and ambience is also perfect and their courtyard overlooks the stunning Botanical gardens. <br/><br/>They are obviously on the pricier side, but once you see and taste their exquisite food and drinks and just experience the vibe in general, you definitely won't feel like it's money wasted!

After much debate about what we should do for my better half's birthday, we settled on dinner with the family at The Fat Butcher. We were a large group of 12 people, and decided to book outside overlooking the beautiful gardens next door. However, we didn't forecast the icy rain and gusting winds that had prevailed throughout most of the day. By the evening it had cleared, but was still cold. You can imagine how happy I was when the friendly manager brought us blankets!<br/><br/>We had a bit of an alternative arrangement - we were brought platters of food and each person was given their own plate to dish into. Let's start with the bread - nice and soft, but not freshly baked, which was a bit disappointing. However, the butter was wonderful because it wasn't rock hard!<br/><br/>Soon after, they brought us our starters, which consisted of bone marrow with toast, pork ribs, skaapstertjies and a salad. Not being much of a meat eater myself, I only tasted the salad, which was delicious! There's so much going on in that salad bowl - fresh greens drizzled in a delicious dressing, crispy bacon bits in between complemented nicely by the blue cheese and the figs, soft, fresh avo slices. It was a winning combination! The meats were also good - the ribs looked sticky and soft, the skaapstertjies had a lovely flavor and everyone seemed to enjoy the bone marrow.<br/><br/>For mains, the platters looked like something from The Flintstones dinner table - plates of different cuts of meat, all looking tender and juicy. For us more picky folk, there was grilled sole to feast on. I must say, that fish was delicious! I usually prefer to eat sole on the bone, simply because it usually has more flavor this way, but this time it was cooked in such a way that... Wow, it tasted good! And the herb crust was amazing too - added a lovely bit of texture and worked nicely with the pickled vegetables that it was served with. I tried the sides of normal fries, sweet potato fries and vegetables. The vegetables consisted of a lovely seasonal combination of corn, carrots and butternut. Everything was cooked perfectly and I can see how it made a great side for the steaks. The fries were amazing - I'm not a huge fan of fries, but these had some sort of seasoning on that made them absolutely delicious! Same can be said of the sweet potato fries. Everyone enjoyed the steaks as well - cooked to perfection and dripping with flavor.<br/><br/>We finished off with a dessert platter consisting of mini chocolate fondants, with caramel popcorn and marshmallows, and cheesecake, with merengue, fudge and raspberries. Both were delicious, but my favorite was the cheesecake - biscuity crust and beautifully complimented by the other elements on the plate. Yum, yum, yum!<br/><br/>Throughout the night, the service was great! And despite the cold and a few power outages throughout the evening, we all really enjoyed ourselves. I'd definitely return again in the future!

The Fat Butcher is a wonderfully whimsical meat-eating experience, which admittedly, seems something of a contradiction. What makes it so light and airy even as you're tucking into a massive cut of prime beef is the wonderful ambiance, the attentive and professional staff, and the excellent selection of wines. The food itself is sublime, with superb cuts of excellent beef. Well worth the visit.

Fantastic all round! Had my birthday lunch with kids and wife. Will book our office lunch in December at Fat Butcher and go there again in between

Best burgers in stellenbosch, amazing vibe and amazing service. We had the BBR burger and it was fantastic!! No corkage, and the bread prior to the main meal is also delicious.

We were placed outside but were not informed that it it us a smoking area. The table next to us were smokers. Also there were children under 18 in the smoking area with their parents. After we complained about about the smoking, we were moved to the inside. It was overcrowded and very noisy. We were placed at a very small table in the middle of everything. The service was not good and the waiters came to ask every now and then, with plates of food if it was ours. They management is poor and the waiters were confused as far as I can judge. I ordered the lamb rump which was OK but nothing special. The wine is totally overpriced for the region. It was not a good experience and would not recommend thw restaurant.

What a absolute treat. From the service to the decor and best of all the food. This restaurant delivered! <br/><br/>We had the chicken and seasonal veg. The chicken was prepared well and it was packed with flavour. The roasted carrots was one of the most delicious things I've ever tasted. You get good quality meat at a reasonable price. Our friend had rump and he was also very satisfied. He also enjoyed the extra surprise marrowbone that was served along with the steak.<br/><br/>One friend also ordered the cheesecake, which was plated so beautiful. For a steakhouse they also have excellent coffee. <br/><br/>Will definitely be coming back..<br/><br/>

I had a simply magical experience here for lunch :) greeted with delicious home made bread and a friendly waiter, I just had a simple salmon salad and it was served perfectly and it was delicious :) the settings is fantastic and although quite pricey, was just a great all round experience

Great service and amazing food. Steaks done to perfection. Worth every single cent. I would recommend the lamb shank and Parmesan mash. Will be back again and again!

The food was very nice, but extremely pricey. We ordered a picanha cut steak, which wasn't on the menu. It was very tasty, however when we got the bill we were shocked to see that it cost R465 for about 300g. I would expect them to have a price list for something so expensive or at least inform one of the price. The steak was most definitely not worth it. The sirloin and fillet where on the expensive side, but nice and very tender. I sent my fillet back because it was undercooked. When it came back it was completely overcooked. The service was good and it was nice to see everyone jump in to assist with cleaning the table etc. The staff were not all on the same page with which of the steaks were available on request and we got different information about the availability of the ribeye from 3 different people. Not sure we'll be returning. I recommend enquiring about the prices of the steaks that are not on the menu.

What a gem this place is! I was very impressed. I made a booking and got to speak to a lovely lady who promptly assisted. Our waiter Yssel made us feel as if we were his only customers. His knowledge surrounding the wines and giving suggestions were great! I ate the 200g Beef fillet and my boyfriend ate the 300g Rump steak. The meat was cooked to perfection and the marrow with vegetable was so delicious! The portions were big so we were absolutely full but the taste is so amazing you just wish you could have space to continue eating !!! Reasonable bill, fantastic quality and great service I'm so so delighted we have this new place we will be visiting often and bring our friends here too..

How wonderful to finally have 5 star Steak Restaurant in Stellenbosch. The "competitor" in town is really going to need to up there game to keep pace.

Worst telephone etiquette I've ever experienced from any business! I called the landline, which was answered promptly and asked to make a reservation to which the person on the other end replied "just hold on" and completely forgot about me. I listened to the back of house conversations for about 4 minutes before hanging up and calling the cellphone number. It was answered "ja" by who I assume is the owner. She continued to babble in the background until I asked "hello?" And she suddenly said "oh shit, Fat Butcher good day".... I was relieved when she said they're fully booked

We went to the Fat Butcher on a Wednesday night, 3 weeks after they had opened. The atmosphere was great and the restaurant was busy even though it was a weeknight. I love the wine fridges and the meat deli at the front of the restaurant. You can buy their meats and sauces from the deli. <br/><br/>I had the mussels for starter which was delicious. Served with a cream sauce and a toasted fresh bread it's almost a big enough meal to serve as a main. For main course I had the rump steak with mushroom truffle sauce. The steak was cooked perfectly medium rare. Considering the quality of the meat at R140 for a 300g steak with a side its good value for money I believe. My friend had the fillet steak with mushroom sauce which he said was very good. We first had some Striped Horse crafts beers which were good. With the steak we decided to go with the Protea Merlot which went down very well. <br/><br/>I would highly recommend their milkshakes especially the Oreo Milkshake, it's huge and absolutely delicious. Service was friendly and ambiance was just right. I am looking forward to going back to try their ribs!

We went as a bigger group and it was a mediocre experience.  The decor and furnishings are well done.<br/><br/>The waiter(s) served us with a smile and was friendly, but lack some experience.  It seemed that there was only 1 waiter assigned to take orders and the others simply assisted at bringing the orders to the table.  If you asked for something from one of the other waiters it was met with a sheepish look.<br/><br/>There was  a power failure after ordering drinks.  The power problems was a known issue since they experienced outages during the day, but they were ill prepared. No emergency lights or extra candles.  The stairs were unlit and we only had a small candle on the table.  The restaurant filled with smoke since the extractors in the kitchen were down too. Once the power was restored we asked if they can turn on the air conditioners.  This never happened.<br/><br/>The food is pricey and I expected a little more presentation wise for a R250 steak. See pics from from other users. Two of the meals were given to the wrong patrons.  Even after asking they ensured us and insisted it was correct.  Another order was not what was ordered.  Again the waitress insisted that it was our mistake.<br/><br/>Maybe we will try them again once they are settled in

Brent Neethling and I went there for dinner. It was the first steak I had in 3 months since I was abroad and it was absolutely amazing! The best steak in Stellenbosch hands down!! The staff were friendly and the ambience was great! <br/>Its a must try!!

To give them credit they have only been opened for two weeks... <br/>Ordered béarnaise sauce but was then told they had none (hmmm a chef should be able to work a bearnaise within minutes, no?), it was however handled very well.<br/>Beware they put some sweet basting on the meet and do not warn so ask for no basting if you are a plain meat lover.<br/>We will be back and I hope to give a better review then!

The Fat Butcher has exceptional food and great ambience – served with a smile! In its first week I visited this restaurant twice, simply because it was such a nice experience that I couldn't get enough of. My friends and I shared a few meals, mostly starters, and my favourite is Rita's Mussels – creamy, flavourful and a very decent portion. The restaurant has quite a trendy industrial look to it which contributes to the great atmosphere. The service is also top notch – very professional yet still warm and gracious. I think this might just become my new favourite spot in Stellenbosch!
