Review J's Tikka & Kebab - Sandton

I don't know of a single person who's eyes don't light up with delight when the name Akhalwaya's is mentioned, and for good reason. The food is amazing, full of flavour and very generous portion sizes. If you are in the area and are in the mood to destroy your diet, make sure you visit.

My favourite dish is the lamb bunny. It is so delectable, I just can’t have enough of it. I keep going back for more

Great service & amazing food.

Absolutely awesome chow! Super fresh and super tasty. The staff are also very friendly and very accommodating. I would say this is hands down the best Akhalwayas I have ever had!

Oh what bite of heaven the AK special sandwich was...the flavors mingling seductively in a pas de deux :D too much love, too much fillings...their generosity transpires in their servings 😁 this is not a mere sandwich or your average roll....this is GOD speaking to us through food! Well done 👏

Juicy Junkfood! Fresh and delicious... There can be an option to add salad though. But overall they did not disappoint on their Russian rolls.

I'm vegan and still this place gets 5 stars. They go out of their way to make you something special.

Good service and good food. A must stop when shopping at Sandton City

Ordered Js Paneer nan today and it was not according to my expectations. According to its price the nan was too small. But the taste was good.

This used to be a pitstop when I went to Sandton City. Not sure what changed, but the last 2 times, the taste wasn’t the same of the Tikka Naans. Today I told them that the chicken is dry. No response. So I asked for mayo to cover the chicken. Sadly to say, it was my last visit to them...

Found another Indian food joint in the sandton city mall food court. They have limited options but good combination to pick. Added attraction is the samosa. Tried a chicken roll here. Presentation was nice. Amount is sufficient for a light dinner. A good option who is looking for Indian food.

I woke up with one of those hot curry cravings that just weren't going to go away.
I went on the Mr.D App and found this place I hadn't heard of before.
Ordered the butter chicken (hot)..... It was probably the BEST butter chicken I've ever tasted and it was just the right amount of hot.
Can't wait to taste the rest of what they have to offer.
Butter chicken is usually hit or miss and J's got it spot on!
Compared to the other food establishments in the food court, this is probably one of my least favourites. Certain items are done well such as the chicken korma pita or the chicken tikka or the chicken lollipops. But the portion sizes are mediocre and the food bland for the steep prices

Was hungry and was craving for Indian food...was in the mall and happened to see this place...ordered mango lassi, mutton biryani, paneer makhni with tikka and chicken witj garlic naan...naan was served cold...the curry had too my j colour...the mangibin the lassi was probably cut on the veg board, the mango in lassi was carrying the vegetables taste...did not enjoy the that much...

Food court restaurant. So we cannot expect a fine dining experience or same level of taste. I ordered a platter to share with my wife. The quantity was huge and couldn’t finish it. The tikkas were done quickly and there wasn’t any exceptional taste. Its a quick bite type food. If i dont have option and visiting this restaurant again, i would prefer to order something which doesn’t have food color.

I had lunch here a few days ago. This was after a few years! I'm glad to say the standard of the food is just as good. I had the tikka naan with cheese and it was so delicious. The food didn't take that long either so it's perfect for a lunch spot.

12.01.2018 Decided to give Mr D another try. Wanted something spicy for lunch. Ordered the Turkish Lamb Roti medium. MR D service and delivery is very quick.

My Roti was still warm. Not a very big sized Roti for the price, and the Lamb is just one long Kebab with some chopped Tomato and Onion and it needs salt. Not much texture to it either. Expected something different, but tasted ok. Will give something else on the menu a try some other time.

J's Tikka & Kebab : Stopped in at this counter at Sandton Shopping Center and totally disappointed with my choice. The service is way too slow and the food tastes pathetic. The waiters do not know their combo options and are inattentive. I ordered Mango Lassi and Chicken Pops Combo and was a total let down. The chicken quality was way too poor and the Mango Lassi didn't taste good.

Overall, a total waste of money and time.
Hot Or Not
This place adds way too much color in their curries. It's is not just unpleasant to look at , but also very unhealthy. Rest items also not impressive as well.

This place is a hit or miss. It depends on when you go. I've eaten delicious and not so delicious meals here. Their chicken tikka schwarma used to be amazing and huge. The last time I had it it wasn't barely filled and average.
Their chicken winglets look great but then u saw them taking it outv a bucket and it put me off completely. Also why is their food doused In so much of colouring??
Their lamb wraps were soggy but the lamb was good.

I bought a Chicken Tikka Pita from J's tikka Kebab it was absolutely revolting. There was hardly any chicken in the pita and the colour was more like a beetroot colour which made more sick even to look at it. it stained my lips.....I am regular customer at J's but I will never go back after this experience.

Be warned. They use the same grill and exact same utensils cooking veg and non-veg items! Found chicken and paneer makhanie being cooked on the same grill and the same utensils being used interchangeably. Avoid if wanting vegetarian

Really great food! Their Monday special of two naans for R80 is a decent deal indeed. The lamb naan is really nice but was a bit dry. The chicken tikka was the favorite for both my mom and I. The chicken is soft, spicy and delicious.

What also stood out was the friendly service. Usually I just expect over-the-counter service to be detached and impersonal but the man who served me, Laurence I think, was very friendly.

So i ended up here Monday evening after a hectic day at work, and since i got all the heat from my boss i felt like maybe i needed some heat of my own.

Now there's nothing more confusing to me than walking through Sandton city on a Monday evening, i mean people look so relaxed like they don't have bills to pay, kids walking around like " yeah bro, cant believe how cheap those shoes were i mean at R15k i would've bought two" and i'm just like damn if i buy coldrink with this i might not have enough petrol money to get to work. lol

Which brings me to J's Tikka .... Monday special. which is R80 for 2 naan wraps. I've eaten here before and really enjoyed their food, and more specifically their naan. so i was more than happy to take the deal this time around.

Grabbed my order, and quickly got out of there before Sandtons ridiculous parking fees kicked in.

When i arrived home, the food was still warm and the aroma coming from the packet was to die for. i had ordered 1 x tikka and 1 x lamb .. EXTRA HOT ... i had forgotten how hot their food can get.

I opened up the wrapping and the first thing i noticed was how much smaller they've gotten, i mean before i could order 1 and be stuffed but today i was like it looks like my girlfriend has to starve tonight. they were tiny.

I was actually a little upset, i mean i understand its a special but seriously it was like two tiny wraps that add up to one normal wrap so basically its not so special.

In anycase once i got over the utter disappointment, I sat down and took the first bite.

The food was delicious, extra hot almost killed me but i really enjoyed both bites lol, get it? cause they were tiny?

J's is an awesome place for a quick take away and their food always tastes fresh and absolutely delicious, however they let me down and thus the 3.

I will be back

Quick food on the go. Had their chicken tikka masala pita in an extra hot flavor omg it was so delicious. It was actually hot and satisfying. Of course if hot food is your thing then I highly suggest you try this out. Yes they do have milder options :)
This burger not bad at all, for 50 bucks, with coke and chips, definitely fills the spot, nice and tasty, chips done just right too, awesome

Its a pity you guys don't have more shops around JHB, however, I don't mind driving from Midrand for the Lamb Naan!! Its the only thing I eat in Sandton! Delicious!!

Quite different from the north Indian food we're used to in most places. The curry options are your general popular ones, and they have many other (grilled/fried) options as well. Ordered a medium-spiced J's platter and a side of chips. Amazing, amazing, amazing. Especially considering that it's from the food court, heehee. Great sauces, and well-seasoned meats with some lovely bread. I'd definitely recommend this to share with a group of friends.

Doing a bit of shopping in Sandton last night so didn't have time to make supper at home. Decided to go to the food court and only found J's & Anat open. Decided on J's Tikka and ordered the Lamb Curry (Hot). Unfortunately they werre also about to close so had to eat out of 2 take away containers. The Lamb was really nice and flavoursome, however it took hot to another level. I was teary eyed, but it still tasted like somemore.

Just had the most divine Paneer Makne at J's Sandton City!Superhot - just the way I like it! I will definitely be back!Nom nom nom nom nom!!

My boyfriend and I love this little "home away from home" Indian takeout. We've had the butter chicken curry (portion serves 2) and the chicken tikka pita on two occasions, and I believe the food gets better every time. The prices here are very reasonable and the curries are divine. Would definitely recommend.

The curries at J's would give more established places a run for their money. This was the take-away joint that we preferred whenever we were done shopping but were not too keen to sit down & eat at the food court. The small seating section is usually in high-demand and sometimes due to this, the cleanliness takes a hit.

Although we have tried each & every one of the curries here, the best according to my taste buds were the Butter Chicken, Chicken Tikka Masala and the Daal Makhnie. You get a choice of the curry being served with either naan or white rice. They also serve some mean chicken lollipops but they are a bit on the expensive side. Give the bajiya balls a wide berth as they are tasteless dumplings of just deep fried flour.

Also, try the lamb naan and fish naan. And if you dare, ask for it to be made "hot". Trust me, you will not regret it.

Ordered beef naan, was horrible, dry pieces of steak strips combined with what seemed like 1 kg of diced tomatoes. Horrible !!! Not doing that again.

After a long long day of shopping I needed to refuel and entering the food court I didn't want to eat this, or I didn't want to eat that so I stumbled upon this take away store.

The cashier was friendly and we ordered our food.

I had the butter chicken with butter naan while my mom had the tika naan. The presentation of the food was terrible and my food looked like it had been dropped in oil. But the taste was delicious!I would go back purley because of how full of flavour and how divine it is!

On a Sunday afternoon (June 28), we were at Sandton City Mall and decided to eat at J's Tikka & Kebab. We had Paneer naan and Kebab naan. Do not get confused by the name and assume that this is some kind of stuffed naan. This is a variation of subway sandwich. This is a naan that is rolled up and within that, there is a filling. The Kebab one had filling of chicken along with the masala (which makes it tasty) and onions and tomatoes. The chicken was nice and soft. The Paneer naan was with the same fillings. The paneer should be soft. However, the paneer was not quite soft. But, it wasn't rubbery as well. It's a meal in itself and one naan is good enough to fill one's stomach.

To me this place is really not that bad for a quick meal during lunch time or before a movie. Even though this is basically the express version of Ghazal the food is basically the same however targeted as fast food with a difference ambiance to their sister company. This is probably one of the most expensive take-out places available in this food court which is the only downside. I usually order items that are "off the menu" such as paneer korma and I am yet to be disappointed. The staff are always helpful and accommodate me well. However, my only gripe is that the staff do need to learn the difference between vegetarian and vegan. Other than that the manager is always friendly and helpful.
Cleo
Very tasty chicken korma with Naan bread. Owned by the same people as Ghazal in Peter Place. A bit on the pricey side but always the same quality Indian food

Amidst all the other branded food chains in Sandton city food court, this place, although a standalone one, serves some real tasty food. I specially like their chicken tikka.
Ilinda Du Preez
For a food court I think this is amazing. Proper cutlery, makes all the difference. Generous portion, I took the half portion and it was enough. Naan had a bit of char on it but still had a good butter taste. Tender chicken, good flavours and some proper heat.
Bruno
These guys used to have a killer chicken tikka and a chicken korma. Unfortunately, it seems things have slipped horribly. Today's chicken korma was terrible..chicken pieces were dry and burnt. The butter naans were average and one was also burnt. Will chance them one last time before moving elsewhere. Pity.

Lamb naan. Yes please.

Ordered the chicken tikka burger. A lot of colouring was used. Didn't enjoy the burger as it was soggy. Chips were good though. Will give it a try again.

J's looks like an ordinary takeout for curries and other Indian takeouts. In reality they make tasty and genuinely appetizing food at reasonable prices. The chicken korma (medium) is my favourite. Their rice is fluffy, their naan breads tasty and light. Next time you're Sandton have a bite. Very much worth the experience.

Time for some fast food while shopping. One sits in the fast food area and they bring your food to your table. Nice touch for a fast food restaurant but certainly not fast arrival of the food. My wife finished her entire meal from Anat and I was still waiting for mine to arrive. And still waited… and still waited…
When it arrived it comes on a porcelain plate with a metal knife & fork.
I had the Paneer Makhni & it was delicious. Rich& spicy & lots of sauce. Really yummy. Probably the most expensive take way restaurant here but very tasty food. A great mid shopping take away meal.

22 Dec 17
Boy have the wheels fallen off!!!!
No more service at tables.
No more metal knives & forks!!! Porcelain plates??
No service at counter!!! Customers walking away.
No one cares when you ask them about all of this.
In the words of the senior guy at the counter "we just like Anat now”. My butter chicken (balanced on my tiny plastic take away fork) looked and tasted and smelled like chicken makhnie!!??
Fallen off the ladder!!!

Being Friday i mostly pop out from work to grab something different and usually spicy.

It started off with all lamb option's not being available, So i opted for their Beef Pita, when asked for level of spiciness i asked for the Hot and was told it would take around 10 minutes to prepare.

The Pita finally arrived and was unfortunately not very good what so ever, the Pita was cold &soggy , the beef on the pita was completely bland and flavorless. there was Zero seasoning on the beef and tasted boiled. the only redeeming factors on this abomination of a pita was the sachet of salt that came with it the little bit of yoghurt in the pita and the lettuce being crisp and fresh.

I opted for the full portion as i was quite famished , if i actually received the full portion i am frightful to think what the the half portion consists of, the full portioned disappeared in about 4 bites....

I Hope for their sake this was a once off incident , with the choice available in the Sandton Food Court , its doubtful i would ever find out though.

This is probably the priciest restaurant at the Sandton City food court. You still sit out in the food court but your food is delivered to you along with cutlery. They prepare just enough food for the day so I was disappointed when they ran out of dhal makhani. Try one of the naan meals - it's like a saucy wrap with some lettuce, tomato and whatever filling you desire - delicious!
Kevin Osner
Top Indian cuisine at excellent prices. Limited selection, but it's tasty - above average, even if it is in a food court mall.
Larissa
If you are tired of the usual take away places in the food court you should try this. Spicy food packed with flavour. I like that you get proper cutlery to eat in the food court.

I would recommend the burger or naans. I love that there is a great variety of sauce accompaniments to purchase but I'm not sure that they go with the food. If you choose to purchase a curry it's more expensive than a normal takeaway meal.

J's is owned by the same guys that do Ghazal. Ghazal is awesome and there are hints of this greatness in the food here. But it never reaches those heights. As a take away for Indian food and if you're craving Indian food then this place is fine. But if you expect some expertly made Indian food, you won't get it here. The lamb burgers are quite fantastic though and their specials (which never seem to end) offer great value for money.
Nafisa Akabor
Located in the busy food court of Sandton City, J's offers Indian fast food like burgers, kebabs, meals with naan, etc. I only ate here once, a lamb dish, and found the meat smell to be too over powering, which is the main reason I order chicken, given the choice of meat dishes - but this is just me. My husband seems to enjoy their food and still buys from them, while I prefer any other spot in the food court.
