Review Kongtai Chinese Restaurant - Sandton

Daniel Martin
Absolutely phenomenal restaurant with friendly staff and sublime food. The dumplings were cooked to perfection and were so juicy. I love the crispy beef the most. It was so thin and crispy that it melted in your mouth. The rice was a great addition to soak up the tasty sauce that came with it. Sushi was also fantastic. I would highly recommend visiting. Great prices for incredible food. You won't be disappointed. Also the views are so beautiful! Take a date here.

Kong Tai Chinese Restaurant, Morningside, Sandton. A delightful Chinese Restaurant … well located in the Wedge Shopping Centre. This restaurant offers Chinese cuisine as well as Sushi. You must try the spicy fried chicken. It is amazing. The service is quick and servings are generous.

Authentic Chinese dining experience! The outside covered patio setting with great views are so enjoyable! The food is delicious and the staff are very knowledgeable!

Love eating here. Decent menu selection. Can find something for everyone. For some reason I am addicted to the seaweed as a starter.... and for dessert, the red bean buns or red bean cake. Awesome Sake as well. The best part is that I can take (buy) dumplings home due to the little shop next door <3 and whatever other goodies I require.

This is one of my absolute favourite Chinese restaurants. Very wide selection of food. The dumplings and the bamboo with black mushrooms are awesome.

The service is excellent and the food you can tell that the veggies are fresh and all the ingredients are fresh and clean.

Fantastic authentic Chinese food! Not like the normal commercial takeaway type of food, but the proper recipes. This is where the local Chinese people go to have food or for their birthday celebrations. We had a private room with a lazy susan in the middle of the table that could rotate for us to share dishes. Everything we ordered was superb. We had 12 different dishes that we shared amongst everyone. The food was more than enough for all to eat their fill. U will definitely return here again!

"Gung hay fat Choi" Love that the menu is authentic asian cuisine. Second time dining there last night to celebrate Chinese new Year. Had my usual delicious starter of Fried Pork Dumplings. Followed by the Chicken and Cashew nut with Egg Fried Rice for my mains. Tried some of my friends Sizzling Pork in Satay sauce, as always everything was delicious with excellent service. See you again soonest 😊

For my wife's birthday, a REAL Chinese dinner (or banquet), served the way they do in China. We even had a Chinese friend with to confirm the authenticity. As could be expected the food from their extensive menu was excellent. The service quick and friendly, and all this at a remarkably reasonable price per head. Highly recommended.

The food is always amazing here but they tend to have waitresses with no etiquette. Really hoping they'd give their staff proper training.

Worst dumplings i've ever had and the manager just argues about it like i'm the moron. Dry and tasteless. Baked in an oven, an air fryer or maybe even a microwave. Ghastly.

50g or 4 x tiny pieces in a sweet and sour double tub of rice with orange sauce and some raw carrots - terrible overpriced and revolting
The owner is a rude, arrogant, unfriendly pathetic man who enjoys robbing his customers and loves to act like hes somehow doing you a favour....I ate here a few times as they are one of the few Chinese restaurants that makes a special chillie chicken dish which is rare to find.....each time I ordered it the plate was 70% chicken bones.....I kid you not, these crooks are charging over R100 for a meal where you have to search tirelessly through bones and chillie for small bits of chicken....When I complained and asked why there's no chicken he rudely turned and said this is the way its done...we went back and forth arguing till i walked out.....since then I found Chinese Northern Foods just up the road.....they offer the same dried chillie chicken at the same price......Only differnce is that there is sooo much chicken you end up taking it home and eating it the next day......avoid at all costs unless you want a rude, ugly man to rob you and then argue when you ask why!!! Also when i walked in the tables where full of oil, greasy and the place was also dusty...they didnt even bother to wipe the table down....I was about to ask the owner why the table was so disgusting but got a horrid look from him so I just sat down.....this man needs to re-think his game plan

This is one of the upper class Chinese restaurants in Sandton. It is one of the cleaner environments. Food wise, it looked like a pretty average Chinese restaurant. My fried rice lacked a bit of eggs and the rice noodles used for the beef fried rice noodles was typically the store bought ones.

Went back again and the experience wasn't better unfortunately. The deep fried pork ribs was served raw and service was also pretty slow.

We were a table of four today, Monday 18th March. We arrived, ordered drinks and a few minutes later ordered our lunch off the lunch specials menu.

After we arrived a few more people arrived. We had ordered our food prior to the other tables. Our waitress was rude and non attentive! We pointed this out to the owner as we left.

My friend had to ask for water and ice 3 times from 3 different waiters. Our food literally came out one dish at a time as the other tables who came after us were been served their food. We waited for at least 5 minutes for our individual meals to arrive. The fourth meal took even longer to come out! When we asked our waitress she simply did not even come to our table she walked past and just said ‘it’s coming!’

Food was average for a Chinese restaurant yet fresh and portions were relatively big except for the sweet and sour chicken, there were only 4 pieces of chicken in the serving. I had the bean curd with chili mince and it seemed to be drowning in oil however tasty.

Not sure if we will return there are plenty of other Chinese restaurants with polite waiters and good food in Johannesburg.

Their manul has been increased a lot of food. Still like to have lunch or dinner there with friends to use the traditional round table.
Clean food with lots choices. I think the handmade noodle is my favor.

Proper Chinese food from Chinese cookers and chefs. As a Chinese, their food reminds me taste of hometown.
Service is good as well. We go to this restaurant once a week per month.

Not sure how this has such a low rating. I lived in the far east for a short period of my life and this was like returning for an evening. If you want to experience not only authentic Chinese food, but also get a taste of their culture and atmosphere I highly recommend Kong Tai. If you don't like this restaurant, don't visit the far east, but don't leave a bad review just because they don't conform to your Western expectations. I feel privileged to have another region of the world open up a little piece of it in far away Joburg/South Africa. Highly recommend for anyone who wants to TRULY experience some well made far east asian food.

Food is consistently good. Peking duck is great.Dumplings always tasty. Friendly , pleasant staff and management
Large variety of dishes on the menu.

The food had a wonderful aroma, it did lack salt, overall experience was good, lots of vegetarian and vegan options ! There are not many dessert options...

This place came recommended by a Chinese friend and so my expectations where high. I was fairly disappointed, the food and feel is quite authentic I love that, a lot of the meal options aren't so standard in most chinese take out around. The food however is a hit or a miss, some dishes like the steamed fish, dumpling, spring rolls, seaweed, chicken and cashew where a total hit whilst dishes like the corned soup and ginger duck where a total miss, the meat was prepared by I assume boiling it but without rendering the fat then it was dowsed in candied ginger and leeks, uh the whole combination almost made me gag. We had chosen a large variation of dishes because the place offers sharing sizes but also because we wanted to try several different things but some really left a bad taste. The place is also quite sloppy just in that some of the crockery was chipped and some of it had signage while some of it didn't and our table was close to an old worn out couch covered with an even older blanket so that was not tasteful.

An average Chinese cuisine.

Ambience and decor: Relaxed, clean, quiet.

Service: The waitress was friendly and sufficient.

Price: Reasonable

Menu options: A wide variety of menu items offered.

Food: The food was good. Some of the food contains strong flavours, but okay.

Management: No manager came to our table.

If you are in the area, you can visit this restaurant, but I will not recommend that you go out of your way to go there.

We went for lunch on Saturday (1 October 2016) with my boyfriend and a couple of friends.

The service is always super friendly and you're always greeted at the door with a smile.

The food is really tasty too. In my opinion everything is also quite reasonably priced.

I tried some of their prawn tempura sushi and it was really pleasant and freshly prepared!

Recommendation: although there is no picture attached, try their dumplings. One of my favourite dishes! 🍣🍤🍜

Horrible experience. Ordered 2 of the same dishes which didn't look even close. Glasses not replaced. Ordered a coke light and the tin handed to my husband as he comes out the loo. Owners don't acknowledge you after a shocking and expensive lunch. Yugh. Don't waste your money
Food is very good.Although the really good dishes are all on a separate menu only in Chinese. Their handmade noodles is on that menu which is a shame because that's seriously the good stuff. They should look into translating that menu into English so the people that don't read Chinese can also experience the really good stuff. Service is ok. Nothing to write home about.

When you walk in, you are transported to Asia - restaurant was full and a melting pots of cultures. We did come later and when the restaurant emptied out, it was nice and quiet, but lacked the vibe. Food is delicious! Can highly recommend the Chicken & mushroom soup, wonton soup and the chicken black bean and chicken cashew dishes with the fried rice. Prices for the main courses are a little above-average, however the quantity and quality makes up for this. Try this little gem - you won't be disappointed!

Quite a nice place to get a quick takeaway from, however the food is oily and very bland. The flavor of the sweet and sour chicken was really nice but only came with about 5 pieces of chicken. Mediocre meal.

An authentic Chinese experience! Spicy dishes are prepared well (prawns in chilli and garlic sauce is a MUST TRY). The duck dish we had was very tough though. Just about R100 for a main doesn't make it cheap but quality is superb. Definitely visit here again.

I liked this place a lot, it has a great set up. My sushi was delicious and fresh. The service was really good. I really like where the place is situated. I d say they need to play some tunes or have some sort of entertainment to make the experience more enjoyable as it was super quite... I felt awkward just talking. Otherwise, Pretty okay joint!

A nice Chinese restaurant to try when in the area. I ordered from their Korean menu which I probably won't be doing again as my dish was correct but lacked a few details to make it fully Korean.
I would love to come back here and try one of their stir fry dishes as I heard several other customers comment on how tasty they were. The menu is quite extensive and includes a separate sushi menu. I often find that it is difficult to choose a proper selection when a menu is as large as what Kong Tai has.
My waiter was quick and full of smiles and did not mind my request to hurry with the food as I had somewhere else to run to. All in all a good experience and worth another shot.

Been to Kong Tai twice and on both occasions they served good food! Try the spring onion sizzling beef which is quite good and their duck is quite succulent, my partner had the ginger chicken which I didn't enjoy but he did!

Unfortunately this restaurant in my book doesn't have a very good reputation. It is a pity as there are not many Asian run restaurants in Morningside. I have had noodle dishes which are too oily and rice dishes are below average. The prices are not bad but the service like many Chinese restaurants needs work. I find that the shop next door is more enjoyable than the meals at their restaurant which is a pity.

The food was authentic and very enjoyable. The waiters were very kind and willing. If you looking for a "cleaner" version of Cyrildene fare this is def a good option.
PS the place was packed with many chinese diners which is always a good sign!

We have been here a few times, as it is conveniently situated, and is often filled with Chinese people enjoying the typical fare such as the steamed fish etc. My two biggest concerns are the inconsistency and the attitude of the female co-owner when you raise a concern. The knowledgeable charming waiters are good, and try to resolve issues, but they are very much controlled by the owner. Previously when we have been, the spicy calamari has not been as fresh (smells quite strong!), and is a little soggy, while the crispy salt and pepper pork chops were good. This time, the spicy calamari was fresh, beautifully crumbed and fried, and presented with a nice spice mix of Julienned vegetables with chilli. However the salt and pepper pork chops were greasy, fatty and poorly spiced. The crispy fried beef was overcooked and inedible. When we complained about these two dishes the lady owner discounted the crispy fried beef by 30%, despite us not eating either dishes. This did not go down well!!The new premises' décor is attractive, and the restaurant is large, perhaps it was better when smaller and more cost effective. Then the focus could be on consistently good food??

Have only gotten take away from here, which has been ok. Not my favorate place for Chinese food and have just gone for convenience reasons. Prices are average but I've found the food to be a bit salty.

This is only the take away menu. Their sit down menu is incredible!! Speciality madness! ~ I used their to come to this place with my family before kong tai moved ~ (for the second time). The food was just as I remember, crispy kingklip just like years ago! Their crispy beef strips are addictive! Huge portions and affordable. They serve traditional Chinese beer and soda. (Found sarsaparilla for the first time ever!) And there is a Chinese supermarket next door for home snacks :). Only complaint ~ service, but what more can you really expect.... :)

Extremely disappointing. After reading all the great reviews, we decided to give it a go. The service was terrible and unprofessional, ordering a bottle of wine, to only have it placed on our table and not even opened or poured. The food was of low quality and no taste. Needless to say i do not recommend this restaurant.

We went here last night and it was nice enough. It has a pretty setting with nice views and a good menu. The menu is nice and varied as I so often find Asian restaurants to just have the same boring dishes on the menu. Sweet amd sour pork, sweet and sour chicken, sweet and sour baby feet, blah blah blah. But not this one. But we specifically went for sushi so I'll have to go back for warm food. The sushi was as good as any I've had so nothing special to say. The service seems like it is good but our waitress was new, which she did, apologise for, so I can't bash that. I still have no idea what she said the entire night. She practically whispers while she mumbles, facing away from you. I feel I need to mention though, who seems to be the owner was super rude to us. Long story short she accused us of being liars and cheats, but whatever. We got a free meal when we proved her wrong.

went to two times, both two times the food too much bad,and the bill made mistake, charged the thing I
never ordered.the tissue is dirty!never go back any more

The food is really really good I rate it 5 star for Chinese feel and taste . Management and staff could be jacked up thou I would give the service 2 stars. The owners seem to watch TV in the restaurant and sort out administration issues in the dining area!

If you're looking for authentic Chinese food (outside of the Cyrildene area) then this is one of the better places to go, the fact that so many Chinese people frequent this place just shows this. The food is good however they could work a bit on the presentation. The staff are generally friendly but there has been one or two times where I've come across a staff member who had the "I'm here because I need to be here" attitude, which isn't very pleasant

Casual Chinese restaurant from everything authentic and wacky to the simple stir fry. Love this place for an early Sunday dinner. Service is average... And the food is well tastey and Chinese. I'm not a fan of highly fatty fried foods, so the dumplings, soups, and steamed fish is amazing... We tasted an authentic Chinese desert soup make with rice wine and pineapple with sesame balls. Very unique and an squires taste... Cool experience

Big portions... Mediocre food... David, the owner, will accommodate special requests... Slow service...

The hot pot is good though... Pepper prawns are great...
