Only reason I'm not giving it a 5 is because I've lived in China for six years and love their nations food very much thus, their food falls one star short of authenticity, but is still great tasting and I can't help but feel like I'm somewhere in Mainland China when I'm sat there.. This place is a gem, it's about as close you get to cheap and cheerful in the Mainland and their Chinese vibe is apparent. Their food servings are generous and many plates may be shared among a table (we had a table of 10). They have beers and whiskeys available and a few other liquors, However for a corkage, you may bring your own alcohol, ask the staff. our Bill was R1600. Including tip for all ten mouths, drinks bought included too. So definitely affordable place to eat. Overall, highly satisfied with the place and will definitely be back when I miss China again.

My daughter invited a group of 20 people to Mangkok for her 15th birthday. Food, service and atmosphere was amazing. You wont make a mistake to go tho this restaurant.

I'm slowly but surely hating the whole place... Though Mongkok is a fine place with fine people... The actual place or should i say surroundings are full of racism.

I absolutely love this place. We've been a loyal customer for I'm sure close on 20 years. The food is always delicious

Great Cantonese cuisine. Credit card machine available. Wor mein is a winner.

Authentic, with beautifully roasted duck hanging in the window. Tasty sweet and sour pork, with generous lashings of sauce and delicious fried rice. Spring rolls with a nice crunch and generous filling, very delicate dumplings with filled with tender pork. Takeaway and sit down available, friendly staff, quick service.

This place has been there since my childhood. Although there was a time where I stopped eating there, I have decided to come back. unfortunately, the dishes were too spicy which meant I couldn't taste the dishes properly for flavour. But I see the classic dishes remained the same and much if it's flair from the good old days still exist.

Ordered from them through Uber eats as we like good Chinese restaurants and believed that this would not disappoint.

We ordered the spicy prawns (sizzling plate). Every prawn still contained their poop shoot. That is unacceptable - you cannot serve prawns with the nasty brown string remaining! The beef vermicelli hotpot is not bad but also nothing to rave about! There are really much better Chinese restaurants in cyrildene.

I cannot comment for service or ambience as we were not there.

I ordered the vegetarian hot and sour soup. It was awful, and... it had meat in it. The vegetable cashew nut dish was just cashew nuts in flavoured water. I'll never eat here again.

My Cantonese side of the family used to frequent Cyrildene back in the day, but since I'm one of the only ones left in SA, I barely make it down to Derrick Avenue anymore. So I'm always excited when we take some time out to visit new Chinatown.

Mongkok was one of the restaurants we always used to go to. My grandfather would order a huge assortment of dishes and everyone would pick at what they want. Nowadays I tend to stick to my favourites when we don't go in a bigger group.

For lunch I opted for the Beef Flank noodle soup, my absolute favourite dish. Unfortunately it didn't live up to my hype... The meat wasn't as tender as it's supposed to be, and the sauce lacked the usual star aniseed flavour. I also should have asked for the flat rice noodles as I'm not a huge fan of the thinner egg ones. I'll keep trying the beef flank at other places until I find the perfect one.

My boyfriend had the sizzling ginger beef, but it also lacked any distinctive flavour and was just quite salty overall. I also had the seaweed salad for starter which was nice and spicy.

With its kitsch decor and slightly dingy vibe (which is standard fair in cyrildene, don't go there expecting fancy), Mongkok is an old establishment and will probably be around forever. So I think for the next few visits we'll try other places before coming back to try new things on the menu at Mongkok.

Food is good but my expectations for them were higher. Maybe because i've had Shun De so many times before and just think that their food can be so much better. But some of their food selection does differ so i guess it does depend on what you order.

New favourite spot

If you are looking for yummy chinese food, at a reasonable price; and fantastic portions to share with fam or friends...then this is the place to go. I love the booth seating they have- it brings a nice intimate sense with those you are with - however I did notice through our meals there was no soft music playing in the background, but could hear the buzzing of the lights.
With a little soft chinese or even western music this place would be perfect.
But honestly the food; and selection is great!

We visited them during the Chinese New Year celebrations and were thoroughly impressed with the portions of food and the friendly staff. The sweet and sour pork was exceptionally delicious.

I was told to try China Town if I wanted some good Chinese food and this place didn't disappoint. You wouldn't go here for ambience—it's not a place like that. They do however serve up some delicious food. We sampled different dishes and they all were quite nice. Soups are good. Their portion sizes are generous so we had take-away to enjoy for later.

If you consider yourself a relatively newbie entrant to the world of Cantonese cooking, Mongkok is a great starting point for you to try. One of the oldest establishments on Derrick St, they focus on the food with heart. I don't recommend ordering your staple Chinese food, but rather try something different by ordering 1-3 dishes with a side of rice (a meat dish, a veggie dish and mixed dish is what I recommend as a good spread) . Leave your egg-fried-rice & sweet-and-sour ways for TongLok at the door.

Food is awesome at this little dive in China Town. Great egg fried rice, the garlic Pakchoi is fantastic, pot stickers are superb. The Sweet n sour pork is unbelievable and crispy chilli tofu is the best tofu i think I've ever tried. It has zero atmosphere though, but I don't really care cus the food is the bomb.

The food was authentic succulent Chinese delicacies delivered on a platter to a lazy Suzy table setup one after the other. Even the hungriest hounds would have been satisfied by the R175 p/p selection. Pity about the wet weather at the Chinese New Year festivities, although that didn't dampen the cracker works.
