Review Ciros Umberto - Sandton

Nick Dempers
Fantastic Italian/Portuguese restaurant. Food is very good and has a great vibe.

We had the most amazing experience today with Waiter Alberto. Due to the festive season the kitchen was out of stock on both prawns and oysters. Alberto went out of his way to ensure a delivery took place during our time there, serving us the most delicious seafood we have had in almost a year. Impeccable service and good. Thank you Alberto!

Great service and the best pizza I have had - full of ingredients and the fresh garlic and chilli bowls are a winner. Wonderful atmosphere and vibe. Love going to Ciro's and make sure to always eat there when in Johannesburg.

Always a pleasure visiting Ciro's Umberto Restaurant. Great food, amazing atmosphere, excellent service.

Great option for a South African styled Portuguese restaurant, also offering a wide selection of pizza and pasta. The menu offers something for almost anyone. I would strongly recommend a visit should you not have already paid a visit to Ciros. They offer a number of out door tables as well often with live entertainment on a Friday evening. Staff are both friendly and professional. Over the past 15 years Ciros has managed to maintain a great all round experience.

Superb food and service. Loved it. My husband had a wonderful meal half chicken and prawns. I had the curry.. Spicy!!. Will definitely go back to check out the night vibe.

I love going on Thursday and Sunday nights as Nadya Mycroft sings live for our entertainment. Excellent food and a pleasure to listen to such a beautiful lady. Her voice and personality makes it extra special!

I now live abroad but whenever I find myself back in Joburg my number 1 food priority is visiting Ciro's. The routine is always the same. I read the menu and imagine a range of enticing options but always end up going for the Quattro Stagioni Pizza. That combined with the the complimentary focaccia and 3 sauces always leaves me speechless as I close my eyes and chew each bite as a slave to satisfaction. Ciro's is my favourite restaurant on planet earth and I'd easily say that the top 3 pizzas I've ever eaten were all Quattros served at Ciro's.

Pretty great all round experience. Menu is portuguese and has lots of options. Craft beer and and excellent wine selection. Great for a weekend lunch.
Karen Calteaux
Excellent seafood and pizza enjoyed by our party. Decently priced. Good service. Nice relaxed atmosphere.

Their pasta's are the freshest I have ever had and my fiancé said their burger was the best ever. Thank you for the great food & keep it up!

The Ciros we knew from Brixton is now Here. Still the same old Recipe for their Pizza. The taste we grew up with. Simply Amazing
Ben Van der Walt
Friendly staff and consistently good food. Would like to see imported Mediterranean beers on the menu though.
Jéan-Jacq du Preez
Nice selection of craft beers. Recommended ordering the crab curry for a unique experience.
Melanie Crossley
I expected better food for the price. I will go again to try something else and give them a second chance.

Manager has a bad attitude. Will never go there again. He refused to give us a refund even though the wsiter admitted something was wrong with the veg served

Came in for their special mellanzane parmigiana to be told it's of the menu and as we are old patrons they made a quick plan to organize the ingredients and made it for us... it was the best one ever... thank you guys for making our experience special..

Quant restaurant but the food was shocking. Ordered a lamb shank and espatada. The lamb shank was small and slivers of a toothpick was discovered inside. The veggies were off. The espatada was ordered medium rare and only 2 pieces were cooked properly, the rest was cooked to death. Portions were small. Service was good though.

I've not been quite this disappointed in some time. Ordered on UberEats and delivery was missing an item (never been credited but that is Uber's issue, admittedly). The missus and I were starving so the minor delivery hiccup wasn't a big deal. We ordered a variety of items to sample it all. It's our first time, after all. What could possibly go wrong?

First thing we tried was the regina pizza. And the first thing I noticed was a very dense pizza base that resembles ordinary bread dough. Its taste confirmed as much. Almost zero flavour in the dough, the texture of dense, baked bread, and absolutely no rigidity in the dough. Hopefully the flavour of the topping could make up for it? Sadly, that's a definitive no. The tomato base is barely noticeable. It's only distinction is the distinct lack of any flavour. The topping on the regina pizza is one I assumed was impossible to mess up. Until now. The ham has no seasoning or flavour. In fact I get the impression that no thought was given to seasoning of this pizza. To call it bland would be an overstatement of its quality.

Regina description: droopy, bread-like, flavourless, open sandwich.

On to the Hawaiian pizza: well, we know where this is going. The Regina pizza dough was no error on their part. It's identical in every disappointing manner. The same "ham" is used on this open sandwich (I really can't bring myself to call this a pizza - even for a bread dough the gluten development is not there). The pineapple on this sandwich was fresh and surprisingly tasty. Its only redeeming quality. This is a pineapple sandwich only. If they marketed this as a pineapple open sandwich there may be a niche audience for it. As a Hawaiian pizza it's making incredibly simple claims that it cannot live up to.

Hawaiian description: a slightly more tart regina. That's not saying much.

On to a slice of the Popeye Special Pizza. Cue the M. Night Shyamalan plot-twist. This topping is delicious. The bacon is surprisingly delicious. The tomato is fresh and bold. The feta cheese adds some long overdue saltiness. The spinach is bright green and beautifully fresh. The avocado is perfectly ripe and an addition that I was surprised to have enjoyed (avocado on pizza is hellishly over-played in this industry to justify higher margins). This is the only open sandwich that I'm likely to reach for a second slice.

Popeye description: a diamond in the rough let down by sub-par pizza dough and Napolitano sauce. A wonderful display of topping ingredient quality. It reminded me of something one would taste in a development kitchen: nailed the topping, but serious work required on the underlying "pizza" component. Overall, a tasty open sandwich if marketed as such.

On to the final taster: the lasagna. A dish so prevalent on Italian menus yet so forgotten by most cooks. It's rare to find one made well and is often my Italian benchmarking dish. My hopes are oddly high for this one. If the Popeye sandwich spoke for anything, it's that Ciro's certainly have access to good quality ingredients. There's no pizza base here to mess up. So this could be their redeeming dish. Sadly, nothing could possibly be further from the truth.

If you're expecting a layered pasta, forget it. It's a mish-mash of sauce and something that resembles mince. If you're expecting some texture from the pasta, you're out of luck. A fork is sufficient to scoop up pieces of what I can only describe as a savoury porridge. Surely its flavour can at least put a smile on your dial? Well, perhaps it will tomorrow when my dogs enjoy it. Because that's the only purpose I can think of for pet's mince, which based on its texture and flavour, I can only assume forms the basis of this lasagna's ingredients list. It is the second worst lasagna I've ever experienced (Danilos in Sandton topping that list). Perhaps it's a blessing that this lasagna is profoundly lacking any seasoning whatsoever. Salt has this tendency to complement and boost meaty flavours, and I'm certain I don't want to experience more of this minced meat compound. Whatever it may be. Lidls in the UK manage to sell a lasagna for £1. Granted, they experienced a horse meat scandal in the process, but I tasted it and it was a delight compared to this Ciro's version. Whoever is responsible for this recipe needs to have their pens and PCs confiscated to ensure that it's not passed on to another generation.

Lasagna description: I'm not sure whether this should instead be described as a double thick "meat" milkshake served with a straw; or a savoury breakfast porridge with no mention of the meat component, to avoid too many questions being asked of the meat's heritage. It didn't taste thoroughbred to me, whatever it was. As for overall resemblance to an actual lasagna, the only reminder that you're eating lasagna is the fact that it's served in a square tin-foil takeaway dish and is topped with melted cheese.

Overall Ciro's impression: there is a monumental level of irony to this experience: evidently they have access to quality ingredients and have the occasional ability to treat those ingredients with care. However the foundation of their Italian fare lets everything down. Perhaps the Portuguese efforts are their fore? I'll never know, considering my once bitten mantra. I'm not one for paying R600 for sandwiches and porridge for two. I'm actually quite angry about this entire experiment. Some lessons are costly. Eating pizza and pasta shouldn't have to be one.

This used to be a firm favourite. Now they have a new, reduced menu with new, incredible prices, half of which is unavailable. I chose the ribs but they didn't have any. I chose the oxtail, but again, they didn't have any. Eventually I settled on a rather mediocre pizza out of despair. Ordering wine was more of the same. Half the wine menus wasn't in stock. I felt bad for the waitress as she rattled off well-rehearsed excuse after excuse. What a pity as this was my "go too" place!!

Good for a Sunday afternoon when there is sometimes live music. Menu has a variety options but food quality not always consistent. Service mediocre.

About a decade ago when I lived in Douglasdale, I felt so privileged to have Ciros down the road. Their food was fantastic! Loved loved their pizzas and often grabbed a takeaway. I met my boyfriend then and it was one of the first places we went to. He thought it was very average, so I let him think that, but it meant we didn't go there again much. Now, 9 years later, we decided to pop in this eve. We enjoyed the complimentary focaccia but the dough is bread-like and dense and lacks the elasticity and lightness of a good pizza dough. I had a La Nonna pizza and the topping was very pleasant, but again that dense dough. Not the best but edible enough and reasonably priced. My boyfriend had meat cannelloni. Sorry guys but it seriously tasted like either mince from a tin (bully beef) or pet mince (it certainly had the smell of it). It was just poof and unappetising. He just said there was no pride in the dish. A good bolognese is so critical to an Italian restaurant and this was lacking that robustness and depth that one would expect. Very poor really. We didn't leave hungry because we ate the focaccia and he had some of my pizza but the whole meal just lacked taste and quality. Ciros... I am sorry to say this but you haven't moved with the times and I just can't bring myself to return. Even the decor hasn't changed. The place is tired and slightly grubby. Very '80s. Must give the waiter credit for decent attentive service but then there were only 4 tables occupied. That place used to pump a decade ago. Either I've changed or it has gone downhill. Not the best.

We popped into this establishment after Sunday church for an early lunch. And we certainly were pleasantly surprised

Not judging the book by its cover, but this establishment felt more like a burger pub joint. There is a reason this establishment has been in business since 1985 .. the food is on point!

True to its portuguese roots, we certainly enjoyed it. From the thoughtful focaccia served to us as a taster, to the 2 different chilly bowls brought out .. its nice to feel like people are happy to serve you!

We had the calamari and chorizo combo with a pizza and both were great! The calamari and chorizo tastes authentic and the hand cut bulky chips were yum.

Pizza was good too!

Nice establishment to have an easy lunch and great for the family

Been to Ciros on many occasions and not once has it disappointed. I love the complimentary Foccacia bread as starters paired with the olive oil infused garlic flakes. The Ciro pizza is a must try if you love prawn 🍤, Waiters are friendly and service is A+

Good location, cozy ambience and great pizzas. We went here with a big group with kids. The seating arrangement is open and conducive to families. We ordered some drinks and veggie pizzas. We lived the food and open environment

Probably still one of the best pizza places in the Fourways area. We have been going to Ciro's for the past 18 years and never had a bad meal. The service is good and it's great to sit in the open area in the early evening. Well done for serving great food for so many years
Gramo
Been going there for a while
Now, service is really good, while all the other places seem to be losing or closing down this spot just keeps on grinding out the good food and good atmosphere
But changing my review to 3.0 was there this week and the place was very quiet so one would expect good service and This time my pizza was very mediocre but the biggest issue was the service s I did not see my waiter more than twice and the plates were on the table for almost 30min before they wee cleaned up
Pity as I used to rave about this place
Sherinda Chak
The menue is very diverse. I could say a cross between Portuguese and French cuisine. The portions the serve are usually large. I had the ribs and they where okay, bothing I haven't ratsted before. The atmosphere is lovely probably for a nice sunday lunch. They usually have a live band playing live. I would come back just to try all the other interesting dishes
Anandie
Very nice warm atmosphere that is welcoming and homey.
The wait staff are efficient and helpful while the food is cooked well as well as flavourful.
Great for a aunny afternoon with friends or a romantic evening as there are always big candles on the tables.
Upon arrival you can order a feta foccaccia that is yummy. And any of the chocies on the menu is great. Except maybe the duck which is a bit dry.
Top choices are Calamari and Ribs.
Good Food
Awesome drinks
Shooters were cheap
Sangria was nice although we would have prefered it less sweet
Pizzas were deep dish & quite filling
Prawn pasta needed a bit more sauce
All in all pretty good & would visit again

The pizza here are amazing I enjoyed the chicken pizza and pasta. Great service and awesome very friendly staff.

A complementary foccacia on arrival that this a unique touch.

Only problem is that an air conditioning definitely needs to be installed.

Great service.
Ruairi Sheridan
Had a very enjoyable evening here, complimentary focaccia was greatly appreciated and 2 of my 3 companions enjoyed their meals immensely. The pizza could not be faulted, the Ossa Bucco and steak were great, the Rojoes was sadly a let down.
Coffees were great and we were all too full for dessert.
The restaurant was busy when we were there and, despite this our meals and drinks arrived fairly swiftly, once we managed to get the waiters attention. In terms of value for money, Ciro's is on par with most Italian sit down restaurants, the vibe is good and friendly and the venue is clean and pleasant.
Not somewhere I would make special missions to get to, but I will be back whenever I am in the area and looking for good Italian.
Neeta Raga-D
Love this place! Beautiful pizza and pasta! The prawns are yummy too, Portuguese food with flavor! Great vibe in the evenings, the resturant gets packed good to get there early.
Great service the food is not as great. The pizzas are the safest options not the pastas and chicken.

The owner Alberto needs a serious lessen in customer service and making sure his restaurant keeps their promise. The food served was appalling. We ordered a grilled sole with spinach and carrots. We found that the sole was not cleaned and that the spinach was off. The waiter called over the manager. He confirmed that there was something wrong with the spinach and that they have thrown it out following our complaint. We were also promised that the grilled sole would be credited on the bill as it was clearly not cleaned properly. At no time did the manager or waiter offer to take the meal back. Due to the credit we did not return the meal.

When we received the bill the meal was not removed. We queried this and then the owner appeared with a bad attitude telling us that we have eaten the food so we must pay for it. The sad part to all of this is when the waiter was left apologizing knowing the promise made by the manager. Sign of a badly managed restaurant when your waiters are blaming the chef and the owner is ignorant to the situation and customer service. Fourways has some great restaurants. Put this one at the bottom of your list.

Well one of my favourites..... No longer!!!!! On entry, every single staff member on their phones. They see us and just carry on. Effort to even seat us. I asked for big glass with ice. Small glass arrives with no ice. I am going to have my drink and go somewhere else. Sad... As I really loved the food here.

Met some friends here for lunch. I was super impressed to start a meal with a large free foccacia, who does not love freebees???

For starters I had the crumbed brie which was pretty good.

I had the prawn curry for mains which was devine (except for the boring bland rice - gotta fix this). My friend had the duck which was crispy skinned and tender.

For dessert I got a Mille-feuille and it was super om nom nom nom!

Overall a really well spent and filling afternoon!

On this cold wet Sunday evening my friends and I went to have dinner at this restaurant.

I was told it was a very popular place and with the continual influx of diners that evening was mute evidence of the popularity.

There was a very vibey atmosphere to the restaurant and the cost ambiance was nice.

I felt that the food generally was alright in my opinion. I had the baby Kingklip bertonne, my friends had the tripe, spatchcock chicken and mafiosa pasta.

Unfortunately my review would be a little skewed as the baby Kingklip had a central bone in it. I'm not a fan of fish with bones on it. But nevertheless I forged in and finished most of the fish. The sides were a little insipid. The boiled potatoes were completely tasteless. The "creamed" spinach had not much evidence of cream and the carrots were nondescript.

I think the rest of my friends enjoyed their meal. Perhaps their Italian pasta and pizza offerings would be better so maybe in them future will try those.

Its always sad to receive awful service from an establishment that was once pride of the neighbourhood. My review will be based on y most recent visit and not past experiences which have been wonderful and desrving of a high rating ( I will add here that I have been dining at this establishment as far back as 2008) . The food is lovely ( Having a bestfriend from Madeira I have been exposed to authentic Portugese cusine from the age of 10. About my experience last niught AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL, from not being attended to, to being served one drink, while watching other tables around us not only have their orders taken but also their drinks refreshed and meals arrive before our second drinks & food order were taken ( although they had clearly not pre ordered and arrived after us) . Upon realizing that this wasnt just a busy night but that we were purposefully being overlooked, we alerted the waitress: BIG MISTAKE, she mereley cleared the table no explanation forth coming/apology nada. She then diapered into oblivion, Second attempt at asking for help and the bill for our drinks was still yielded npo results, at this moment the trable next to us is now uncomfortable proceeding with their meal as this ordeal has put them off ( Their words) Its now 19:40 we arrived at 18:45PM. IT GETS WORSE we over hear said waitress yell and make it vhementaly known that she will NOT I REPEAT SERVE that TABLE ( Manager of no help watching from the sidelines NO APOLOGY EXPLANATION NIX!) By now we've had enough. ask to pay and leave . To their credit, we were not charged for drinks ( 1x Savanah Dry & 1x Windhoek) - Given the current state of the country, it would be easy to cry racism ( all the other tables were white) but that would be making light of the issue ( Both the waitress & ourselves are black) The main issue, is management did nothing and the waitress was allowed to hurl/shout insults/comments ( not befitting of a staff member of an established entity) The waitress was not reprimanded nor made to apologize. I will miss the live band they have on the decks in the summer, but my DIGNITY is worth more than a few enjoyed sunsets- Go to Ciro's Umberto & enjoy the fare- Just keep in mind, if the waitress does not like the look of you, your evening could be ruined, and management will just stare and proceed to fidget around the till as if unaware- VAMOS COMER!

I ordered a takeaway mexican pizza (which is a mince-type of pizza) and melanzane.I NEVER experienced this bad dishing up of food - the pizza was not even sliced not too mention that the mince was literally just chucked ontop with the pizza tasting like dough itself. It is the first time I saw a pizza box wet, just to describe how soggy it was.
However, the melanzane was very nice and fresh.
We thought it good to order takeaway seeing that their sign indicates "take out" and sat outside to wait, when the waiter refilled the fire with wood, totally ignorant of our presence, resulting in ash falling on our clothes and table.

The customer who sat down and ordered after us, received his pizza before we did. Please explain that to me if our pizza was effortlessly chucked in the pizza box.
Never will I recommend Ciro for anything else than sitting outside (far away from the fire) and drinking coffee or water.
Disappointed. This place would not see me again.

I've been to a lot of restaurants and this is one of the best. You always know that you are getting good quality and value for money here. There pizzas are divine, the pasta is good, but the klipklip my favourite. There menu had a wide variety. Definitely worth a try.
Gabe
Beautiful place, Umberto is the best host ever, very Worm inside for cold winter days.
Excellent service ,
I go often with my family and they love it.
Keep up the grate job..

If you are in search of a quiet and cosy restaurant with scrumptious food, then Ciro's is just what you need. We love their vast menu offering genuine Portuguese cuisine and Italian fare which never fails to disappoint and always make a point of going back at least once every few months.
Gazza
I love this restaurant, we love this restaurant, we live close by. We pop in often it's cosy outside(fire) or inside, decor is as it was on day 1, that's cool, menu does change seasonal or when ever cool. Waiters truly suck, my pet mouse could have done a better job on service, poorly trained staff really especially when they only tell you out of stocks when you order it then kick you out before 10,
Its the traditional Portuguese restaurant, go early or you get chased away.
Martini
Its Portuguese restaurant.
The service was excellent and the food good.
It has the normal Portugese food.
The food and wines are reasonably priced and offers good value.
The ambience inside is reasonable and there is an outside area with those bench seats.
There is available parking right outside the restaurant.
Michael B
We've been coming here for the many years its been around but this was for the first time in a few months now. The difference is easy to spot at first glance, you don't see the owner and it shows in both the service and the food. What was a jewel in the area, has become, at very best, very very average. It wasn't busy, which in hindsight should have pointed to an issue, but still the service kept our own and the table nextdoor long enough that we both had to complain. Its a real pity as this has been a great restaurant for a long while already.
Saltnsas
Awesome homely food with lots of love. This place has been around for ages and the quality of food has never changed. They have a huge range of options from crab curry to pizza. Unpretentious. Cosy. Great food. Service is a little slow though. Worth a try.
Geoff Simmons
Ciro's is one of those warm, cozy type places that is just......nice. Sitting outside during the cooler evenings is a pleasure as they have fires burning around and about. Inside can get rather warm but it has a family feel to it. Very enjoyable food at good prices.
Jaynisha Patel
My family has been coming to Ciro's for years. The restaurant has a homely feeling and the outside seating is great for a warm summer afternoon. The service can be slow and inattentive sometimes. They have a decent number of vegetarian options in terms of pizza and pasta.

On our most recent visit, I had the fettuccine arabiatta. The actual pasta was soft and tasted homemade so that was a winner. I thoroughly enjoyed the sauce which was creamy and spicy at the same time. On our table we also had a folded pizza (beware, it's massive) and a penne macchiata. Both were enjoyed. The penne Napolitana was found to be extremely bland and average - wouldn't recommend it. In the past, we've also enjoyed their pizza which is good.

Overall, cosy spot with authentic Italian food. I would definitely recommend the arabiatta pasta. Hopefully the service improves in the future.

Ciro's is one of those places that I've been meaning to give a try for a while. With a homely, family style atmosphere, there's something about it that lures you in.

The wait staff are friendly and well versed in what they have to offer and ensure that no glass is left empty. The most delicious garlic, flat bread is treated to you on arrival - all a good start to any evening!

Sadly the food was a bit of a let down, but perhaps we were overly ambitious in our order. A mate and I decided that with the starter menu sounding so appealing, we'd skip mains and put together a medley of starters. Opting for the calamari tentacles, garlic mussels, carpaccio, baked Bree and smoked salmon - we were disappointed when all arrived on a single plate and fairly cold. The various dishes tasted alright, nothing I'd feel the need to order again. Our guests opted for the prawn Ritz starter and calamari - again nothing to rave about (can I go on to say that the presentation was also very old fashioned - does this make me a snob?)....

What saved the food for me and definitely reason to visit again, is that my partner ordered a pizza, after a lot of criticism from the table for being boring with his order, he by far got the best meal and I cannot wait to return to try their Popeye pizza. The only meal that I didn't bother to take a picture of, arrived as all pizzas should - crispy base, heaps of cheese and toppings a plenty! As far as pizza joints go, I'd put them up with some of the best in JHB!
Livashnee David
Mario our waiter was really pleasant to deal with. This restaurant's pizza was quite nice. You receive a free focaccia before your meal arrives (as pictured). With generous quantities of garlic, red chillies and green chillies.
Its Portuguese and Italian restaurant.
Can't wait to go back again.

We've been to Ciro quite a few times and the food never disappoints. I had the Oxtail which was lip smackingly delicious! My husband had a Calzone which was massive, and not shy on filling. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and service is great. A definite must visit. With- Gregg

Ciro's has been around for ages and they cater to a certain loyal clientele.

We went last Sunday for an early dinner. The live music created a chilled spot for us to enjoy however the food was not special.

We had the clam starter and shared prawns for our mains. Exceptional prices were not matched by exceptional quality. The prawns had gone powdery and lacked flavor.

Otherwise the service and sangria kept us satisfied.
Xander Karsten
#bleh what an underwhelming experience. The ambiance was mediocre and the music was extremely horrid(1970's rock music with long winey guitar solos).

The eisbein was so overcooked and grey in the inside you couldn't even cut it. Not even a homeless person would have eaten that eisbein. Save your money and go to a proper pub. I recommend walking over the parking lot to hooters. #Fail

Crab curry, giblets, muscles BEEN AMAZING FOR 15 yrs- nothing's changed and love the courtyard outside and lots of parking- thank you ciros!! NEW EDIT: Sad to say no more giblets, mussles, OR CRAB. totally different menu and normally go twice a week. Please bring them back. And no lunch special portuguese steak- ill even pay mor for them all but they arent available.

I cannot find a single thing to fault Ciro's on, except maybe my own fault for driving past this place so many times over the years and never going in. Every single item on the menu is delicious; been here a couples times now and ordered things ranging from deep fried brie and prawns to proschiutto and curry. Each and every item is delectable, the service is fantastic and the ambiance is delightfully casual. One of the best meals to be found in Joburg, and without my husband needing to worry if he's wearing the right shoes or shirt. If you haven't tried Ciro's yet, you are doing yourself a huge disservice. Cannot recommend this place highly enough.
Deborah-Anne Strydom
This is a definite winner for a lazy Sunday afternoon lunch.
Everything is made from scratch with love and care. The waiters are friendly, personable and go out of their way too make sure every visit is special.
The pizza here is legendary and the seafood made to perfection. This place appeals to all ages.
Resham Sathideen
Ordered a lamb shank. Was great !!! Plus they gave me a complimentary focaccia bread. Always good food and great service here !!! Will be back again soon :-)

Always has been great however seems to be slacking in quality lately. This is sad as I have always enjoyed my time and meals in this establishment.

This restaurant is awesome, Umberto is a legend, a must visit. The food is outstanding, ambience both inside and out, is superbly homely. There is also a great selection of wines.
Johannes Jurie Van Wyk
I have had a 28 year relationship with Ciros. In the days in 1987 in Brixton it was th best pizza any student could hope for. Since Umberto moved to Fourways it became a regular drive espacially on Sunday early evenings. Great music even better food makes it the rightfull first of my Zomato reviews. Umberto you will always be a highlight in my culinary exploits.

What a great find. Perfect venue for a casual dinner. Great cozy ambience, wide selection of wine, tasty food; friendly and knowledgeable staff all made up for my great experience.Tried the peri peri chicken livers, Portuguese steak and lamb shank...all were awesome. Will definitely go back.

Ended up at Ciro as another restaurant was closed and I was pleasantly surprised. Service was outstanding, waiter was attentive and knowledgeable. Ordered the Osso Buco with vegetables and it was delicious. Refreshing to find a restaurant that serves food that is properly hot. It was very tender but did contain a section of sinew. Finished the meal off with espresso and Mille-feuille which was outstanding. Not the standard item but with added strawberries. It's not your typical high-end Sandton restaurant but excellent service and value for money. Highly recommended.

Absolutely LOVE this place! It has amazingly slipped under many people's noses. It is something everyone needs to try! Everything on the menu is FANTASTIC, especially the pizzas (popeye special is a must have), the steaks and seafood! It has somewhat become a family tradition to go to Ciros for Sunday lunches! Definitely recommend this to everyone. Umberto is a fantastic restauranteur!
Lambino Nichas
Nice place, the owner is very hands on and Pritty much always there, food is good and I personally recommend the cod fish, first Portuguese Restuaraunt I've been to where pizza is served and seems to be popular as I saw many ordering it and many coming in to collect for takeaways
Kersti-Lee Stevens
Ciros is just delightful...its watm and homey..and a sunday arvy with a jug of sangria out on the patio listening to live music makes you think youre in Italy..my family has been going here forever and by now iv sampled most of the delicious menu and yet to meet a plate i did not enjoy...the service is fantastic and im sure it is because Umberto himself goes around from table to table checking....
Rich Lowe
Fantastic little spot hidden away from the hordes in Fourways. Every meal we've had has been excellent - amazing Calzone and pasta to steak and prawns. Definitely worth a visit!

Service was excellent prompt and friendly
The pizzas that we got left you slightly disappointed. The chicken on the pizza was dry and selection of toppings was scarce. Ciro has a nice carm vibe but the food was lacking

What a little gem in Fourways! It is so homely and welcoming in winter and summer.

The decor makes you feel as though "you belong" and that you are being welcomed constantly which is very hard to establish.

They produce the best Carbonara I have ever eaten! This is the biggest recommendation I can give if you feel like some pasta! It is simply delicious! And any pizza that you order you cannot go wrong!

It is truly an Italian gem, with excellent and efficient service.

Some weekends they have musicians which is truly lovely to listen to, so inquire when they are playing.

A long time establishment on the corner that has seen the coming and going of shops around it. A great Portuguese spot that serves everything from generous pizza to delicious prawns. And with the generosity of cheese on the pizza there is no need to order the 4 cheese pizza unless you feel the need for cheese soup! Lovely spot to catch up with friends and indulge! #justenjoy #getinvolved

Although quite far from where I reside, visiting ciros is definitely worth the drive.

It was the best lasagne and sangria I have had. It was the right amount of creamy and the right amount of filling. DEVINE

Another #HiddenGem everyone should visit.
😝

Ciro's is warm and cosy inside with fires going. Food is average and well priced. Unfortunately my friend got food poisoning after having a pizza.

Had dinner there a week ago. Probably one of the best venues for pizza and seafood. We had pizza and oysters. But the highlight of the evening was the entertainment, a lovely lady with an awesome voice!

Ciro's is a lovely little spot for a relaxed lunch or dinner.
Their Calzone is by far one of the best I've ever tasted.
Their beer selection could do with a bit of work as their only beer on tap is Hansa.
I have been here several times, great food and atmosphere. Nice variety on the menu and perfect for a family evening or a romantic dinner. Live music on sunday was a nice touch too!

High light of my every meal is the homemade desserts!!some of the best!

Great food! Great family restaurant, one of the guests was vegetarian, the chef made a special request vegetarian platter for two. Desserts however wasn't anything to brag about.

Warm and cosy atmosphere and huge portion sizes. My food wasn't the best I've had, but it was still a nice meal. However, I would definitely recommend the crab curry. I had a bite of my boyfriend's and the whole night I had my eye on his food. This is a great restaurant for a casual family evening. Innes Du Preez

Culinary highlight of the year! Roberto the owner is handson and quite a fun character to talk to. Went into a crab frenzy, 1kg of crab curry served in the shell. So be ready for a messy frenzy eat!

Order the crab curry. Flavours were amazing best crab I've had not only in JHB but even better than Mauritius. Will definitely be back. Service was great.

This was my second time at Ciro's and I was not disappointed. Delicious Italian food and a nice casual atmosphere. Service really good and the staff friendly. I had the prawns and they had good tecture, not floury defrosted prawns.
Tassa
An amazing restaurant with great food at reasonable prices! They still give the best garlic focaccia as a complementary starter when you arrive which is awesome with their home made chilli! Meals I would recommend is the Umberto steak or Prawns National. This place is definitely worth the visit.

Ciro's was nothing short of an absolute treat! From the quaint, vintage Italian decor with candlelit tables which create a romantic atmosphere ; to the friendly staff, great service and delicious food!

The outside seating is stunning, especially for warm summer evenings, with trees surrounding the patio which transports you to a little corner of Italy! Inside is warm and cozy with the firewood pizza oven and a just-loud-enough soundtrack of all your favourite 90's classics.

Our waitress was lovely and attentive and made my night by placing a warm, crispy garlic foccacia bread on our table just after our drinks were served. And the best part - along with the fresh and amorous chilli and garlic - it's on the house!
I was unable to order Sauvignon Blanc by the glass, which was a bit disappointing, but my Chenin Blanc was accompanied with a bucket of ice which I really appreciated not having to ask for.

The menu is large and caters for anyone's taste buds with various Portuguese and Italian meals. They also offer quite a few specials which all looked divine. I didn't have a starter - due to scoffing down the foccacia in a ravenous frenzy - but I am definitely going back to taste the Chourizo starter.
My partner ordered the 14 Queen prawns which come with chips, rice AND salad. The lemon butter and peri peri sauces were incredible, with me leaning across the table numerous times to steal a taste. The prawns were cooked very well and were soft and tasty, however one complaint would be that they stuck to the shell. I ordered the Cajun calamari which was cooked to perfection and tasted even better with the absolutely addictive tartar sauce. We ended up sharing between the two of us, which was a great option as we got the best of both meals. You are given quite a large portion - which we finished off completely!

Our plates were cleared almost immediately and refunded with wet napkins for our greasy, greedy fingers. No dessert was ordered due to our gluttony, but the bill was brought speedily and everything is very fairly priced. We even got to do a little customer review at the end, which I think is what every restaurant needs!

Thank you Ciro's, we will definitely be back again soon!

Was expecting wow but got ok to not great. I though it would be great food it look very old style Italian from the outside, but got just an average meal.

Service was also average and I think they do have a lot of potential.

Been here many times and always good, wholesome food. A dependable favorite when you just want to chill. Especially great on weekend evenings when they have some live music. Food is simple and good. Only one negative from our last visit was a pesky and rather persistent flower seller. Personally I think we are harassed enough a every second robot with beggars and I think having your meal interrupted with someone else trying to part you from your money is just bad taste.

Not bad, very warm atmosphere. Service is excellent! The menu has something for everyone on it, so this lovely little place is sure to tickle your tastebuds! Snails for starter was very tasty and left me wanting more. Had the lamb shank for main. Apart from being a bit dry, was very tasty and pleasant to eat. Paired with good company this restuarant is a lovely dining experience!!!

After fond memories of Ciro's in Jhb I roped in 16 friends to join me for pizza on Thursday the 10th of July.

Starters of oysters, calamari & focaccia had my friends eager to taste the pizzas as this was our monthly get together for pizzalympics. Ciro's being round 4 in a series of seaking out jhb's best pizzas.

Pizzas arrived a little late and some of my mates only got there's half way through me chowing mine.

Great base on their pizzas, but undercooked and to many toppings unevenly spread had us eating with knives and forks. The pizzas without too many toppings were amazing, but the ones like the Mexicana were not great at all.

As the night wore on it was harder to attract the waiters. I also would have loved to meet a manager at one point as we were a large table.

Overall nice, but next time I think the Portuguese cuisine is order of the day.

Awesome! Great atmosphere, good music, friendly staff and the menu is great.

The "Umberto steak" is a must-do and the chourizo is fantastic. I have also subsequently fallen in love with the Osso Bucco.

My rating holds - another visit - tried two dishes never had before - fried brie and beef porcini. Spot on!

It was the public holiday on a Sunday and finding a new restaurant in the area i was in almost proved to be a challenge. I wanted to try something new which was not so commercially well-known like your chain restaurants.

Ciro's is a lovely restaurant, giving you that touch and feel of a vintage late 80's, early 90's Italian restaurant with the interior complimenting the ambience and the traditional wood fire oven. I still used to peruse the one in Brixton which was famed for its amazing pizza and food over the years! The traditional candle table light set on a bottle wine, which you can notice was used for many months/ years!

Whilst scanning the menu and then having a good look at what to eat, i was pleasantly surprised to see a medium size focaccia appear on the table. I later found out that this was on the house when my bill arrived. The garlic focaccia crust was crispy with a dash of margarine, house chilli and more garlic adding to a starter treat for the pallet. Felt like i haven't eaten one of these for many years. The menu caters for a variety of pallets and i was intrigued at the Chef's special of the rabbit dish which looked rather interesting. Thou being vegetarian would obviously skip.

About 15 minutes later, my vegetarian pizza arrived and oh boy was i in heaven. The toppings are generous and Ciro's spares no thought to cut out on giving you money's worth. Cheese, mushroom, onion, asparagus, artichokes, olives and garlic. A generous topping measure compared to some other franchise pizza places.

Again the pizza base crispy, yet not hard, well fired, and the toppings complimented a lovely pizza. My partner had the panzerotti (pasta with spinach and ricotta) which she thoroughly enjoyed with a remark that it may have been "too much" tomato in the dish. Overall we both were pleased.

Service was good, with the waiter twice coming around to ask if all was well and the manager paying a visit during the service. To top it all, there is a questionnaire you can complete when your bill arrives to rate your experience. I must say, for a second i felt like Gordan Ramsey doing his Kitchen Nightmare bit, and wanted to call the chef out, but only this time to compliment!

It’s no surprise that this one didnt disappoint. Lovely place for pizza and families. The complex looks a bit dodgy at night with the poor lighting but worth the food. Can’t wait to go back!!

15 of us descended upon Ciros for a family get together. Our main choice for choosing Ciros is that it boasts a variety of dishes from traditional Portuguese to Italian ! What's great is you get a garlic focaccia as a starter on the house , probably the highlight ! We then ordered a few starters , the chicken livers.. Which was bland and mild, and the calamari which was good ! Our mains included the prawn special, sadly this was overcooked & dry ! Hence very dissappointing ! The chicken on the other hand was quite tasty & succulent ! Ciros are known for their great Pizzas & pastas & that didn't disappoint ! On the whole it was a peasant experience ! I'd probably give it another shot . Usually when you go out in large groups the food quality is bound to suffer ! Having said that ! My recommendation is go Italian !

This was one of my favourite Portuguese Restaurants, but the last two outings have been very unfavourable. The first incident involved the manager trying to pass prosciutto crudo for smoked salmon ( "Its the way we smoke it") and the second, the clams were gritty and the trinchado was bleak. No self respecting Porto fan would dine here!

This is a lovely restaurant. We happened here kind of on a whim as we'd seen this place before and decided to give it a go while headed home one night. We were seated inside, there was live music outside which sounded lovely, we were just looking for a bit of piece and quiet. The service was very friendly and attentive. They bring a lovely focaccia bread to the table instead of a basket of bread rolls, which is a nice twist and it tasted great with some garlic splashed over it. I had the prawns special which is great and a LOT of food, good thing I didn't order a starter and my partner ordered a steak. Both of us were very pleased with our meals and I'm planning on returning for a family meal when my folks come to visit. Overall a very pleasant evening, nice ambiance in the restaurant and food was very good.

He went to Ciro's for dinner on Tuesday night and had a really lovely evening. We shared the garlic mussles starter, which was delicious! For mains I had the spinach and ricotta cannelloni, which was very tasty. The portions are big and very good. We really enjoyed the house red as well.

Our waiter, Kevin, was really awesome- polite and efficient. The service is great!

We love this spot for a quiet and lovely night out!
