I also think most will prefer a hogs head No 1 Pilsner however I went for an old fashion black label draft to match my palate to the hot English mustard
It's massive so one sitting was not enough for me to finish it

We went there for drinks and th rugby. We then ended uo ordering some food. The servers were friendly. The bar men were very informed and helped us make the right choices regarding the portions and spicyness of the food. We orderd beers and cocktails. They were delicious!! For food we ordered the pork belly, chicken wings amd chouriso. It was delicious!!! We will be going back!! Great atmosphere!!

This is a good central place to meet your friends and watch sport. The staff are always helpful and really know their stuff. The food is also great. This is a good spot.

Great burgers! Went there for a quick lunch and was not disappointed. You could see the the meat roasting outside, giving a great smell when close. Service was a little bit slow. Definitely a good choice if you are in the area craving a good burger!!

Pretty happening place. Loved the music. Ordered crispy pork belly,crispy bacon,chicken liver peri peri & mini burgers. Though the food came a bit cold but enjoyed every bit of it. This is such a great place to go have a drink and watch sport and the food is surprisingly delicious. We went on Saturday night when the Springboks were playing so the whole atmosphere was loud and vibey.
We ordered the Hogs platter, which was filling and delicious! The ribs and chicken strips were definitely my favourite.
We also ordered the jalapeño slammers, which alone warrant a visit to Hogshead. They are unbelievably good and so cheesy!!!

Good vibe and services. Ended up going there after one of our regular spots let us down. The food was yummy. We had everything from platters to burgers and a seafood salad at the table - everything delicious. Particularly the Dragon Fiery Ginger Beer. If you enjoy Ginger Beer this should be on your “to try” list.
I had the chicken burger and it was very bland, boring and lacked flavour. A nandos chicken burger has more flavour. However, there are lots of TV screens to watch any game.👍Good service as well.

First impressions of Hogshead is that it’s the perfect after work hang-out spot - thereby implying lots of alcohol and a good vibe - but the tapas are something of a treat I haven’t come across at many similar venues. The variety and quality of their sharing plates are great, not to mention that if you order 4 or more, you get a free portion of chips to supplement your meaty or fishy finger-foods!
The service was great. The beer options are vast and delicious and it’s not too noisy. Parking is also secure, but beware if heading home Rivonia’s way - the cops KNOW Hogshead is a great place for a few cold ones and they don’t hesitate to breathalyze you - so come prepared with a designated driver or UBER!
It is always a safe bet when wanting to go out somewhere vibey yet chilled! Their food is great and the service exceptional. All the staff really go out of their way and are smiling for days.

I've been to Hogshead twice now and both times involved a large amount of alcohol being consumed. So while I cannot comment on the food , I can say that the drinks are great, the service was good and the vibe really gets you to unwind.

My experience at Hogshead was just about what one would expect. The beer was good, the crowd rowdy and tv screen to watch the rugby. The one thing I did not expect was to be served such an awesome burger....generally we found the food good. A fun place to go hang out.
A drinking hole with a twist. Great service and the food is good. The tapas type starters accompany a refreshing beer nicely. On a Friday night after work drinks this spot is the place to meet friends and unwind from the week.
What a great afternoon at Hogs Illovo. Great service and the food was fantastic. From the starters to the mains... all 6 of us enjoyed everything. The Manager Wesley is almost as good at Brett from the Rock Cottage branch. :)

Celebrated my birthday at this restaurant in the beginning of December, 2016. The service is absolutely great. The waiters are very accommodating considering that we had more than 15 people at the table. Your food is amazing and so are your drinks. The food comes just on time.
It was pretty busy here with a bunch of people coming to watch the cricket and some bachelors/bachelorette parties stopping by, but our waiter managed to always make sure no one was waiting for a drink. Our food also came really quickly which is good since it is a pub after all.
We got a bunch of starters and platters to share across the table. I really enjoyed their onion rings and jalapeño slammers, their chilli sauce is really good. I don't eat meat but my friends enjoyed the biltong carpaccio and loved the ribs.
I particularly enjoyed their cocktails and sitting outside. I'd definitely come here over most pubs.
Went for drinks on a Saturday with a few friends. Was greeted well and sat at a lovely table outside. Skha was a very friendly waitress and met all our needs! I was very satisfied by how fast the food came out. This restaurant/bar is a must - do!
Surprise surprise. Came to watch the game which is what this place is generally known for as it's always buzzing and has a good atmosphere. Been here previously as well however just for drinks. We decided to have a snack which turned into a full on meal once everyone had ordered and to my surprise the food was pretty good, save for their salads. But who comes to Hoggs and orders a salad anyway. All other food was well presented and delicious. Had a really good salmon fillet with mash. Service was good as well. Even though this place is mainly well known for drinks, don't be afraid to try the food.

We normally get platters when we go here and they're pretty good. Good selection of beer and I do like the whole self service tap set-up they have. Feels pretty cool.
Hogshead in Illovo is one of the best sports bars/cocktail lounges in Joburg. I've been there countless times, and have always had wonderful service. The outdoor seating area is great for a catch up with mates, and it's close to the bar. Indoors, many screens are up to watch the soccer/rugby/sport of your choice.
The Hogshead original burger is a classic. The starter baskets are also great! The also have 12 different craft beers on tap, as well as a large cocktail and shooters menu.
This is a place you keep going back to again and again!
Hogshead was a 'vibe'. The atmosphere is the first thing that attracts you to the place and it always looks exciting to be part of the crowd.
Their food is good. The portions are great and there are interesting items that you spot on the menu which male you eager to try.
It's the perfect venue for cocktails, I just worry about the weather especially now that we're having rain so often.
The parking and access to it is easy and convenient too. I'd love to go back and experience more of what they offer.
Amazing Vibe here. Cool old school music great place to go to on the weekend. The food here is what attracts me the most, its not just bar food. Its a variety of dishes for every taste and they are huge portions and it's quality food : Must try the burgers, the bunny chow and the jalapeno poppers😊 They also have usb hub sections where you can charge your phones which is cool if ever in need of a Uber but your battery decided it needed a timeout.
Great place for after work drinks. Went on a Friday at 4 and it was already packed. Quite a diverse bunch of clientele. The service is great and loved that the waitress gave us a card with her name on.

Very much a party spot over the weekends. Bar service is supremely slow (like waiting 30 minutes at the bar to be served kind of slow). Nice music, nice vibe if that is what you are after.
I've been here quite a few as it is conveniently close to my home. It changes quite dramatically from a restaurant with quite tasty burgers during the day to more of a pub late at night, and is probably one of the best known hang out spots in Illovo.
A great start to the year, awesome service. Thank you to Promise for making our night at Hogshead Illovo that much more enjoyable. I'll definitely be visiting this awesome establishment soon.

Hogshead is a trendy neighbourhood pub specialising in craft beer, burgers and ribs. I went for a relaxed Sunday lunch in the sun. Highly recommend the ‘double double burger’ which is a double cheese burger piled with a double portion of crispy maple bacon. Service was smiley and helpful.
So sad we arrived too early for the pulled pork (11:30) as it still being smoked. Had amazing family meal any ways. Great selection of draft beer on tap
We went to Hogshead on Friday night with some friends after dinner, we just had drinks but I loved the vibe as well as the service.

I usually go to hogshead for drinks after work, I am very impressed by Promise's ongoing excellent service. Its such a cool place to hang, not only is it a nice place to hang but the food is good as well. The nduna sauce is my ultimate favorite.

The burgers here are amazing - I had the pulled pork burger and the amount of pulled pork given was extremely generous. This may sound trivial, but probably the best onion rings I've ever had. The vibe is also really good.
However, the service was a bit pushy with our waiter being a little too eager in trying to get us to order more beers and blatantly trying to get us to order the more pricey beers. That was quite irritating.
But will definitely be back to try out some more of their epic burgers (and onion rings) and their wide variety of beers.
I Happen to work around this area and therefore go to Hogshead Illovo quiet often for drinks and food. The service is excellent everytime, special mention to Promise the Barman, who's service is just excellent with not just myself but all those he serves. He's so attentive, We've never had to ask for a refill when he's serving us, and has this ability to make us feel like we're only ones he's serving no matter how busy he may be..
I love this place. The food is always great and there is always a great vibe. I have to say that the service from Promise is always outstanding!
Went through to see friends today for A drink at 4pm.... only just left now at 9:45 because of the amazing vibe created by the Muso Sheron, he just kept us buzzing. I had the original chicken burger with chips and some onion rings... such great food, to big to finish so took it as take away. Unfortunately my favourite the Mediterranean chicken burger is a let down at 3 stores so far, Douglas dale, rock cottage and illovo. As they keep forgetting something on it and comes out@ dry. For the rest of this new menu, so much to chose from and all tastes really good. Will be back for some great service from Promise and great Sunday party. Had a friend's birthday party here last night and had a fun time. The food is yummy sticky bar food and the pesto mayonnaise is heavenly! Thw service was great and attentive- with the waiter happy to help move around tables for our extra guests. I really loved my drink which was a cocktail with malibu, lime, strawberries and sugar- I will definitely give it a try again amd agin!
Thoroughly enjoyed Hogshead Illovo...... it has a great vibe. From the bouncer to the barmen.... all staff were super friendly.Oh.Em.Gee! All I can say is 'Crispy Bacon Stack'! You will not be sorry! This bacon is cured by Hogshead themselves. It's crispy, it's smokey, you'll want it every day. Served with a roasted garlic mayo.

I decided to have my birthday at hogshead, after battling with a few restaurants when they could not accommodate a table of 35. From when I phoned and booked this restaurant could not have been more helpful, friendly and accommodating. I had my birthday on the outside deck under the umbrellas with normal tables and cocktail tables, thanks hogshead for the helpful suggestion, and everybody had a great time and everyone enjoyed their meals. Special thanks to Wes, Frankie and Bee for the excellent service and great attitudes. I will definitely be coming back for the super service and the cheese burger, it was delicious!!!
A nice all experience, my burger was really good. The patty wasn't fatty and nasty. The chips seemed a bit odd, like they were very dark and oily but I didn't feel for chips luckily so didn't make much of a difference. Seemed like they were fried in old oil. The service was pretty disappointing, waiters were quite unfriendly and just had an all round bad attitude.
Having been a regular at the Douglasdale pub I was in the Illovo area so popped in for a couple of drinks, no food though. Seems like a real vibey place, much like the other branches. Nice setting and offers the standard range of beers and menu. Never let down by Hogshead.

Man sized meals that are absolutely scrumptious. Smoked burgers are the pick of the bunch and theres a selection of craft beers to boot. Gets VERY busy during sport events, this is sport nation, so get there early if you want to eat.
Waiters tend to get overwhelmed and delayed.
Pick of the bunch for lunch for quite a few guys from the office for Friday lunch.

Perfectly acceptable "pub food". Don't expect fine dining and you won't be disappointed!
The cocktails we had were all a bit watery but not bad. We had two portions of the sliders (mini burgers) and despite the mediocre burger rolls the fillings were lovely. Chicken and beef were both very nice. Tasty chips, and my friend's salad was fresh and she enjoyed it.

I was here on Saturday Night, when arriving the place was very busy. On arriving I was greeted by a friendly doorman, very big black guy. I found a waiter immediately and got drinks pretty quickly considering how busy it was. Music was oldies, some real classics from my younger age, hehe. Loved the atmosphere and the friendly service. Will be back very soon.
I had a really good time. Live band provided a great vibe. The Burger was one of the best in JHB and the beer choices available at Hogs was a treat. I'd defiantly go back.

This is an awesome pub-styles restaurant where attentive service and delicious food is key! The music is at the perfect level to give its a vibe, but not too loud so that you can't chat amongst yourselves - music mix is fab with late 90s pop seeming to be the key. KevFabFood can highly recommend the Angus Beef which was perfectly cooked and tasted amazing - the restaurant prides itself in its wide range of craft beers! Only issue we had was that they had no water so could not have coffees afterwards and a very limited deserts menu.
Really enjoy this spot. Always a good vibe. Very well supported by the business community nearby. Beers are nice and cold, service is pretty good (can get a little slow during very heavy times) but generally good. Great place to meet for a few drinks quick bite to eat and good times. A real crowd pleaser.

I really looked forward to the Zomato Meetup at Hogshead, Illovo. Having passed the restaurant before it seemed to have a lively pub-atmosphere teamed with craft beer and good food.
Walking in the door you immediately get the feeling that this is pub2.0. No dingy, darkly-lit booths or sticky beer-covered floors here! Instead it's a modern, well designed space that screams "urban pub".
You are welcomed by the friendly managers and waiting staff; even the bouncers seem happy to see you, and you get the feeling that the staff wants to be there.
Having tasted a few of the beers around the table I opted for Brewhogs #2 and liked it so much I continued with it for the rest of the night. Worth a mention was the sxollie cider I also tasted but since it was more of a cider I stuck with the beer.
For starters the chef agreed to serve me the Mediterranean Haloumi, fried and served with sun-dried tomatoes, basil pesto and tzatziki. While he warned me it is fried (i usually prefer grilled) I still found it a bit oily and while the pesto and sun-dried tomatoes made for a nice addition, I would have preferred plain old sweet chilli sauce for dipping.
I wish I was a proper carnivore because I would have loved to try the smoked specialities (Hogshead is an authentic smokehouse) but I ordered the Calamari Salad instead craving a bit of freshness. The salad looked mighty intimidating and the grated danish feta on top a revelation! I bravely fought my way through the iceberg lettuce, (some fancy greens would be preferred) and the calamari -though perfectly cooked- whacked you over the head with the cajun spice.
My favourite thing, dessert was next and the house-speciality, Chocolate mousse arrived in a martini-glass with an option of cream or ice cream. I always prefer ice cream and in this case it was needed. The "mousse", tasted amazing but was so dense it was a mission to dig it out of the glass and because of this density it was also way too much. I could barely get through a third of it and i'm a major chocoholic.
Another small issue was the very loud music level that made it hard to communicate with the others around our table. If someone isn't sitting next to you you'll have to resort to sign-language to get your point across.
We were spoiled with an after dinner shot, which I think was called a cherry-bomb, and it was so delicious i had two!
I have a feeling Hogshead is on the right track and judging by the bodies present at 11pm that feeling is shared. With a menu that changes every few months, craft beer on tap, enthusiastic team and a great location, i'm hoping Hogshead will listen to their customers and make some minor necessary adjustments to take them to the top!

2nd Zomato Foodie Meetup and it was fantastic. We were treated to craft beer and dinner at Hogshead Smokehouse in Illovo.
So lets get started with the craft beers, I had the #2 & #4 of the Brewhogs craft beer, I would strongly recommend the #2, and its one of their most popular beers, if not the most popular. They also have X-mas brew that has hints of cinnamon and cloves that give this beer that "christmasy" & festive spicy flavour.
On to the food, I ordered the Crispy Pork Belly served with Teriyaki and Sesame Seed dipping sauce. A few pieces of the pork were a little on the dry side, and could have done with a little more seasoning, however the crispy crackling bits were delicious and crunchy.
For mains I had the Prego Chicken, which is a slow smoked half chicken, marinated in a hot (the menu said mild, but i requested an upgrade to hot) peri-peri & grilled with prego basting sauce; with Chefs salad and coleslaw. The chicken was succulent & juicy, and cooked to perfection, I have never eaten smoked chicken before, so this was a first and "it was good."
The evening ended off with some rich decadent chocolate mousse with the option of cream or ice cream. By this stage of the evening, we were all stuffed, and struggled to finish the desserts, that tasted sooo good.

A genuine smokehouse and great vibe. For someone who doesn't frequent that neck of the woods I was a little apprehensive, but in true Hogshead fashion it didn't disappoint.
Starting with the Chourico; good size portion and a yummy peri-peri sauce that didn't overwhelm the sausage. The beer bread was the perfect consistency to lap up that sauce. Good job guys. :) Having a look at the other starters around the table, I would suggest that you serve a smaller portion of the Crispy Pork Belly and Pulled Pork Spring Rolls. I think it's a little too big for a starter.
I had the DELICIOUS Hogs Smokehouse Burger for mains, done medium rare and without the bun. NO not for banting reasons. I just wanted to be able to enjoy the real heroes of the dish and that's the 250g cold smoked and grilled burger patty and the house-smoked bacon. WOW. Meat is meat... no it's not. And don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Hogshead really know what they're doing with their Meat ;) Take some time to understand the work that goes into smoking meat and you'll have a new found respect for what they're doing. Kudos to you chaps.
Their bacon should be makin' waves and be served in a bowl with some homemade mayo on the side. Just because. It's that yummy! I think I may have OD'd on it.
All of this washed down with their Number 2 and Number 4. Who doesn't love Beer and Bacon. If any of your friends fall into this category then you need to question who you are hanging out with. Totally in love with your craft beers. Can't wait to try the others.
My criticisms; cut out the iceberg lettuce. Nobody wants to eat that stuff. It's insipid and boring to look at. Invest in some mixed greens for your salads. Sometimes, less is more.
Hogshead serves honest grub to the best of their abilities. Coupled with great service and awesome old skool tunes, it's definitely a "local" away from your local. Great job guys and special thanks to Joseph for taking such great care of us.

I have never before been to the Hogshead. It was always an establishment I walked past whilst being in awe of how busy it always is. Last night I was finally a patron of the restaurant and was caught off guard.
The Hogshead is the type of place where young and bustling joburg professionals hang out. Thus there is no shortage of atmosphere. But let's talk food. The starters I tried were the jalapeño slammers with tzatziki and the pulled pick spring rolls. The slammers were average and what you would expect of pub food: cheesy, oily and will line your stomach but nothing special. The pulled pork spring rolls where however very good and a notch above your average pub food.
The main I had was the smokey burger and oh my goodness... It was a great (if not perfect) burger. They smoke the patty as well as the cheese and bacon and the buns are homemade. The smokey burger really took the Hogshead up a notch for me. The dessert was chocolate mousse which was neither here nor there. One thing that must be mentioned about the Hogshead is their specially brewed beers. My boyfriend is Flemish and this a huge beer fan and was seriously impressed with their IPL.
The service was on point, super friendly and always present. For me this is a factor that can either make or break my experience and a restaurant. The Hogshead staff were superb.
Ultimately from never wanting to go to the Hogshead I can say in all seriousness that it is somewhere I look forward to going back to.

Best after-work drinks spot in the area! Food is ok but very few healthy options. Ask for Millicent, she is amazing and very attentive. Booking in advance advised.
Melicent is the best!!! Excellent burgers and vibe! Smokehouse is awesome music is great. Could do with some more space sometimes difficult to find seatings on fridays

Mr. T, Give this man a Bells, what an incredible member of the stuff. We had a very chilled-mini Sunday Birthday Night with him while serving others. Well done for the service you gave us with a warm stove next to us, made us feel at home.
Amazing bar experience. Felt so at home from the friendly and quick service, drinks and filling and extremely delicious food. App has great deals. Would definitely recommend for pub grub. Clean ablution facilities. Safe parking and waiting area for ubers.
It was my first time there. Not to bad. The food was ok, the burger batties had a weard off taste. The waiter lady, I think, needs more training or maybe she was new. We asked her which cocktail she would suggest and she didn't know and so with the food. We asked what's good in the menu, and yet she couldn't say. But she was really nice though.
Great place for a dop and meal with the family and friends. Really, had a good time.
Very nice place and atmosphere. The food and drinks were good, craft beer on tap. The restaurant was clean. Had some sort of platter and the food was good, had vegetarians with us as well and they could also enjoy some food on the menu which is great like that they cater for vegetarians too. It was overall a very nice visit.
Bit pricey but all in all a fun place to be with great drinks and delicious food. Service has always been super kind and efficient.
Great burgers! Went there for a quick lunch and was not disappointed. You could see the the meat roasting outside, giving a great smell when close. Service was a little bit slow. Definitely a good choice if you are in the area craving a good burger!!
This is a really good place to go with friends, the atmosphere is great the service is fast and the staff are really friendly and eager to help.
The cocktails are amazing here and the beer selection is great and the shot server is well timed when making rounds.
Food is absolutely great and very delicious.
The restaurant also has it’s own app which gives you special discounts and points when you use the app.
The ipa was brilliant and the spicy wings yum.
I'm having quality time waiting for the mabhokobhoko match with high hopes that we gonna bring the cup home
