Review The Steamworks - Sandton

Loïs Qutob
Really an excellent little place for a Friday night hang out. Music pumping from the dj, unique menu and cocktails. (We even tried a sushi type pizza) dance floor and incredible steam punk decor. Bar is stunning. Staff are friendly.

What a great experience. The staff are warm and friendly, like a breath of fresh air compared to the usual Johannesburg restaurant. The venue is fantastically decorated as per the photo's. While I found the food above average, I do think my choice of fish and chips, while well prepared was a little underwhelming in terms of seasoning and presentation. The other people in our party where however presented witheals that were well portioned and looked great. Added bonus , wifi is lightning fast. Regards

The ambience is great. They have live performances, lots of space for lounging, dancing, hosting a birthday celebration, dedicated smoking area with a cool social setup. They have imported beers and craft beers. The food is really amazing as well!!

The atmosphere and vibe of the place is amazing. Will definitely go back

Bottomless bubbles Fridays are always a jam, they play really great music. Location is convenient and the staff is really top notch. Never a dull time at this spot.

great venue for a night out. great food. energetic staff. great prices on drinks. place really kick up at 11pm. local party places to move too as well.
Bruce Hill
I absolutely love this place. Fantastic food, brilliant selection of craft beers, friendly staff and decor not found anywhere on the planet. All this creates a vibe like nowhere else. You have to experience The Steamworks at least once before you die.

Decent fare of eats. Some craft options. Good music on a Friday night but can be a bit loud if you want to converse with the people at your table.

Was there for a birthday party and had an absolute blast! The DJ was amazing. The food was not so great though, the beers, drinks, vibe and dancing is worth it.
Gareth Holley
Held my birthday party here. Service was a bit slow as the restaurant was very full. Great vibe with the band playing and the food was excellent.
Vishen Pillay
Weekly events and parties coupled with creative decor makes this a good place to visit. Service wasn't great but the quality of the food and the live DJ made it worthwhile.

Steamworks is a very cosy and interesting place to have a beer and burger. Even though it was very quiet, only one other table was occupied, the waiters ensured there was sufficient heaters in place to keep us warm.<br/>Service was also excellent and very friendly staff.<br/>Food wise, they didn't have any lettuce so some people couldn't order salads, but the burgers and beers were excellent!

Pictures seem to be uploading side ways but anyway.<br/>Absolutely superb service from the moment I opened the door, sat down, and left through the door.<br/>The butter chicken pizza was superb, as was the custom tequila and jacks on the rocks.<br/>Will be returning for more food, drinks and reviews for sure.

This place is for the people that likes a night out with friends, I would most def. not go here for a ambiance of a romantic night but with a group of friends this is perfect. Food is ok, not the best.
Daria Chernova
Starters were great. We took two different ones to share and both were great. They brought the halloumi the right temperature that it was still stringy and muddle sauce was devine. <br/>Chips with my burger were a bit too salty for my liking. And the burger bun was thick on top so I took it off half way or I wouldn’t have finished my food. <br/>Very good food and even better drinks. I go there more for drinks. Cool design of the place and friendly staff. Not much to say.

The venue is nice, the service is decent. The cocktails are quite nice and the food is average. I don't recommend the dessert though (I had the chocolate brownie) it was really bad, tasted like it was defrosted.

Steamworks, how have you been old friend?!<br/><br/>Now this is a place worthy of 5 stars all day every day.  <br/><br/>Where else in Jo'burg can you find a unique restaurant, great food, exceptional service and a bar that practically turns into a nightclub after 9pm on the weekends (and yes the music is great too! especially on a Friday evening)! <br/><br/>I have never had a dull time, the vibe is great and the people that you see there are the easy-going fresh-faced fun-loving people that you just do not come across a lot these days. <br/><br/>Their pizza is just my favourite

I recommended Steamworks for a family dinner as I dont get to see them often. The service was like molasses going up a hill and considering there where maybe 5 people max inside the place, it didnt leave the waiters much room to hide away but they did a good job at it anyway. When the food eventually came, 2 of our pizzas came out cold....literallty! I'm talking Andre 3000 ice cold!! Horribly disappointed, will not be recommending Steamworks to anyone let alone returning.
Amy Kendal Harrison
Really beautifully decorated venue. The menu caters to vegetarians as well as meat lovers. The food is good and worth the price. Can get a bit rowdy so I wouldn't recommend it if you want to have a quiet dinner. If you are looking for a venue where you can eat good food and party then it's the place for you. The only negative thing I could say is that they were a bit disorganized with our reservation table and the tables are a bit too close to each other.

Steamworks is home.. The service, staff and management are family.. Awesome chill out / party hangout spot. It's everything you look for to start your weekend and more! You'll notice a snap with one of the waiters Jack.. He's a star!
Shaun Gunning
Terrific food. Pizza was superb. Wonderful base. The perfect amount of toppings. Flavour was phenomenal. The missus says the chicken prego was one of the best she's tasted.
Nixie
Awesome place to hang out on Fridays. Pizza is good. Great vibe. Drinks service is good depending how busy they get. best to book a table. All round good vibe for drinks out

Amazing food, service and prices. Super friendly staff. "hiccups" are handled professionally, with a smile. <br/><br/>Always a great chill spot. <br/><br/>Management rocks!
Tony Hulme
Shabby and dirty furniture, poor service and after being there for 1 hour was never offered to take our food order!!!<br/>Won't be going back.<br/>The craft beer menu was only half stocked.
Jolene
I was so pleased after coming here. I've never heard of this place until a friend suggested we come here for an early dinner.<br/><br/>I wasn't as hungry so I opted for their "bar snacks" option and had the bacon & cheese potato skins. When it arrived, the portion was HUGE! It was also so delicious, I couldn't stop eating. It tried my friends' pizza and burger as well, and I enjoyed it just as much as they did.<br/><br/>

What a fantastic place to spend an evening with friends. All staff were fantastic, service was quick and smooth, and the food was excellent. After a few hours spent in the restaurant, we couldn't resist moving to bar, with arguably the best decor in the country, for a couple of shooters and some dancing. What a night was had by all!<br/><br/>Do yourself a favor. Plan a night out at The Steamworks - you won't be disappointed!

Decided to come for some freshly baked pizza because I heard good things about it.<br/><br/>For the positives: The venue is lovely with beautiful interior and a great vibe to it. <br/>It was a nice pizza, the toppings were fresh and the presentation was well done.<br/>The chocolate milkshake was incredible, I've never had anything quite like it! Would definitely go back Just to have another. <br/><br/>Although, the pizza crust was too thin so parts of the pizza were burnt which weakened the whole taste. The staff were quite slow and didn't acknowledge they had brought the wrong orders and some not at all - which definitely brought down my whole excitement leading up to the pizza. <br/><br/>However, it is a nice place with good music and a cool vibe to grab a few cocktails which are reasonably priced.
Joshua Sack
Takeout disaster! We ordered a Roasted pear and pecan salad and the quality and portion of the salad received relative to R110 price tag was appalling. The lettuce was browning, there was a sum total of one pecan, the pears came straight out of a tin and skipped roasting of any sort. This will be the last time we make the mistake of ordering from Steamworks again.

Staying true to form, another last minute restaurant choice and I wasn't too disappointed with the experience.<br/>I had heard about The Steamworks but never really paid too much attention to what was said about it so I basically went in not knowing what to expect. Good location but watch out for the potholes in the road on your way into the the parking lot. <br/>Upon arrival, the reception from staff was polite and friendly but all in all service was very slow, especially toward the end of the evening but that is to be expected with this kind of set up. <br/>At about 8:30pm the lights went down and the music went up a notch. The music was great but if you are looking for more of a relaxed lounge type vibe then this might not be ideal. <br/>I'm not a huge fan of the execution of the decor, simply because of certain elements that didn't tie into the overall image they were going for. That said, it's a airy restaurant and you never feel hemmed in. <br/>I had a Caprese Salad with a grilled chicken breast. <br/>The chicken was on the dry side but other then that it had a good flavour. This was not a traditional Caprese Salad and when going away from traditional, I prefer a basil pesto drizzled over the salad as opposed to basil leaves and rocket leaves. <br/>Great place for pre drinks before a club. <br/>I might return... Time will tell...<br/>

Utterly Disgusting pub, went there for an 18th birthday evening, TO my surprise, there was some Racist comedy night. I enjoy a good comedy show, but when the Goliath and Goliath brothers came on, from the word go, it was "lets have a go at the white people", firstly, He entitled me to be something abusive not sure what i did to deserve that, then he calls us "white people" the problem in this country and so on and so on. Unacceptable and completely disgusting behavior. I WILL NEVER STEP FOOT IN THIS RESTAURANT AGAIN. <br/><br/>Oh and to add to that, YOUR menu is crap, your drinks are daylight robbery, R60 for a small glass of a "cocktail" which was more like a sippy-cup. useless. Go to Molly Malones, at least they have good food, good vibes and don't rip you off<br/> <br/>
Crissy Van Zyl
This place is very very cool! Their interior design and decor is so unique! The whole atmosphere and vibe makes you feel like you're in The States or something cool like that! 😄 <br/><br/>This place is perfect for a couple of beers and some delicious food after work!
Vera The Wine Snob
I've heard so much about this place that I had to try it out. Drinks are a little over priced but there are so many bar staff that there's hardly any line. The bathrooms are a let down: no ventilation and 1 female toilet? The vibe is amazing though: loud music, great dj and a dancefloor which I spent a couple of hours on. Our food did take a long time to arrive but overall, the vibe is what makes this place awesome.

A very good first time visit. Waiters were very friendly, and received good service. Drinks menus was extensive, with a good range of cocktails and craft beer. We had steaks, cooked to perfection- great cuts of meat as well. Live entertainment was good albeit possibly a little loud. A great hangout.
Sbu Dlamini
had lunch here last Sunday, very chilled vibes.<br/><br/>it was not packed, but there was live music which added a nice vibe to the place. There's a car wash right next to the place, so it's a nice place to chill while your car gets washed. They are very large selection of craft beers if you into that.<br/><br/>food: I had the lamb burger, I always find lamb burgers interesting because if you don't do it right they can get very dry. Theirs was excellent, especially the red relish on top of the patty. <br/><br/>all in all, a pleasant experience,I want to go back there on a Friday night and see how the vibe is like. the decor is excellent as well, small details like the table legs that are modelled after steam pipes. The red leather chesterfield style ceiling around the restaurant can use a some dusting though, to bring it back to its former glory.

I have paid a second visit to Steamworks as the previous time had potential but a few components had let the evening down.<br/><br/>The service was great, friendly staff, food arrived at the table on time. Ideal for lunch or dinner. Close to Monte Casino. The décor is awesome. We had the chicken Schnitzel sandwich and Chicken salad.
Ruan Hattingh
Nice vibe! Went out on a windy Friday night, stopped here for a few drinks and decided to eat there as well. Various options to choose from on the menu, nice drinks selection too. Great pizza's and nacho's. Reasonably prices with friendly waiters.

Went for Steamworks monthly comedy night. Well worth the entry fee of R50 and quite entertaining. The atmosphere was nice and relaxed and all in all it was a good evening. The food was good (was just missing those slight tweeks to make it great), we had the butter chicken pizza, chicken wings (which were a little over done) potatoe skins and the banoffee tart. The potatoe skins and banoffee tart being my favourites !!! I had margarita to drink, it wasnt the worst maragrita I have have but it was way to lemony for me. Fiance had a draught and we also ordered the beer tasters, I really liked the cherry ale and the ginger beer!
Lauren Hargreaves
The bar itself is a work of art! Feels like you have stepped into a Sherlock Holmes move when you see it! Only been here once but it was a good experience. Cool outside area to sit, especially to watch live sport. Food was tasty- we all had pizza and no complaints. Pizza options are unique and really tasty. Thin crust (my personal preference) and decent size.
Sarah Krawitz
The waiters and staff are AWESOME! So friendly and spunky, which really made the experience even more awesome. Everybody enjoyed their meal and the cocktails were amazing! The decor is steampunk and very cool. They seem to hold many events and I will most certainly be attending.

On having a debate on where to go eat tonight we decides on Steamworks. Last time we had been here was a few years back for a 21st. Not going to lie I was a bit apprehensive. <br/><br/>We were not disappointed. Yellow our waiter has a fantastic sense of humor and is one of the nicest waiters I've every had. Cheese burger vs chicken burger undecided as they were both extremely tasty and good chips too. Tomato sauce bowl could have been bigger 😂. <br/><br/>Only downfall was a trip to the ladies where it looked like someone had thrown a party. Little bit of a disaster and had loo roll draped everywhere like streamers. <br/><br/>Even with that will definitely be back for the food wine and ginger beer
Claudelle
Beautiful place filled with great people, the atmosphere is chilled yet so vibrant. I had the butter chicken pizza and it was absolutely delicious. Would definitely recommend this place to everyone!!! Thank you for the amazing service. Keep up the fantastic service!!!

Went on a Sunday afternoon no atmosphere. Music too loud as the restaurant was empty. Think it might have been better if the restaurant was fuller. Good very average and service was also average. At 16:00 the music was changed to deep house and turned right up and it looked like a group of regular teens early twenties pulled in for what looked like a regular Sunday late afternoon gathering. Will try again as very disappointed had heard good reviews before going. Highlight was the Gin Mojito absolutely fabulous!
Molecules And Macaroons
I've been to Steamworks on a few occasions and love the subtle steampunk detailing. The ambience is generally quite relaxed, as is the service with often too long waits for the bill.<br/><br/>Yesterday we visited to try out their two for one pizza special. The butter chicken was soft and spicy and was complimented by the yoghurt dressing and crunchy cashews. The semi dried tomato pizza was filled with fresh Mediterranean flavours - perfect for a hot afternoon. Really excellent value for money.<br/><br/>
Claudio
Bouncer/Doorman was absolutely rude. When we were eventually allowed in, the table we had reserved was taken by someone else. The manageress was very sweet and attentive and organized us a table but there are certainly too few waiters for all the tables and the service was painfully slow. We had to chase the waiters down just to get drink refills and I think I asked for the bill about 5 times. Asian pork burger is dry and tasteless, chicken wings are average, sorbet has been frozen for too long and brownies are dry. Seriously disappointing experience as we've been to The Steamworks before and really enjoyed the food and experience.
Daniel Wiggill
This Fourways establishment has become an institution in the area. From a lunch spot to a funky dinner this is the place to go for steampunk lovers amd well anyone who enjoys a great venue with attentive service. Pizzas are always great as is the Mexican sharing dish in its different guises over the years always tasty and well worth a stop.

We visited Steamworks for a Sunday lunch. When we arrived it felt as if they were still busy setting up. Luckily we were very relaxed so it did not really bother us. The waiter tried his best to sell the menu, but it was difficult to understand him. The food took a bit long, but was good. I had mussels as a starter (portion was big enough for a main course!) and my husband the pork belly which was very good. For mains we had their cheese burger with extra bacon. A really good burger, and it was cooked to order. We skipped the dessert, we had too much to eat for starters and mains! The beer selection is good, with a nice selection on tap. But they can improve on the non-alcoholic offerings. A milkshake or two would have been welcome :-)

I have been to Steamworks a few times for lunch and dinner in the past and I found their food quite tasty just like the owners other endeavours such as the Griffin and Perron. Went here for drinks on a Friday night recently and was quite surprised by how rowdy and raucous it has become in the evenings. Being greeted by a bouncer at a restaurant is definitely quite new. It essentially turns into a nightclub on weekend night. If you are keen to just grab a meal and spend time with friends it is likely best to come to this spot during the day for lunch.

Last night Phuza Thursday at Steamworks was not so bad ... Great vibe good variety and selection of drinks ... <br/>Tried their beer buttered hake and opted for vegetables instead of fries ... The vegetables were fresh however their Deep fried hake was just okay .. Let's just say I have tasted better deep fried hakes and this was certainly not the best ...<br/>I wouldn't vouch for eating there but definitely a cool hangout spot for drinks ...
Darren Ford
Incredible restaurant, awesome vibe and decor! Service was great! Love the clock! Pork burger was mind blowing, however, I was disappointed with the Nachos. I had the pulled pork and it was a very bland and the cheese used does not work for Nachos. We shall be back :)
Eve
Went back here after almost two years, the service was good. There were large bookings for 20, which is a good sign of a solid hang out spot.<br/><br/>I tried the Hoisin duck pizza again and loved it.<br/>The base so so incredibly thin that i ate half the pizza , which is unusual for me.<br/><br/>The menus were wiped down with an old rag and smelled, even after she brought me another one.<br/>BUt besides that I had a great time.<br/>********************************************<br/>Another good oldie that always works.Their food is delicious, their duck flat bread is amazing.<br/><br/>The décor and ambience is very unsual and creative. <br/><br/>The  best part is the massive clock at the bar.The drinks menu is great as well.<br/><br/>They do an amazing duck flat bread.

If you are looking for a fun gastro pub then try steamworks! Their food is delish and they have a wide variety of drinks on their menu! Also check their Facebook page for various champagne evenings! It's an electric, steampunk vibe! Coolest place with rad people! If ur keen on trying something different then give it a go and skip Billy's! Steamworks for the win! ⭐️

From the get go the service was good. I made a booking, they sent an SMS to confirm it and again confirmed via SMS on the day. When we got there the waiter was cool and vibey (although he seemed to forget about us a bit during the evening) and the beer selection is cool!<br/>The only thing that is slightly disappointing is that the food on the menu sounds really amazing and different than usual, but the actual taste is a little average. Cool decor as well!
M.D. Bester
Really cool place, prices are more than reasonable, staff are really nice and helpful. Ask for Jimmy as your waiter. Great venue for events and parties.

Last weekend, a bunch of friends got together to celebrate a birthday <br/><br/>Firstly, it sucked that the group was split into 2 tables.<br/><br/>Their service is definitely average, Wilson behind the bar was cool and helpful. <br/><br/>Food.<br/>Ordered the butter chicken pizza on a banting base, it was nice and crispy, but the toppings were forgettable. <br/>The Asian pork burger, I was the most disappointed with. It Didn't taste anything like the menu described. Also because I didn't expect the patty to be pork mince, thought it would be a pulled pork or pork tenderloin?<br/><br/>The thing I cannot understand, is people were still eating and ordering food, but the DJ opened the dance floor? Couldn't have a conversation it was so loud, even though the music was decent, it was too soon.<br/><br/>Please smash a couple of their cocktails! Delicious. <br/>Lavender & gin mojito, I didn't taste gin, but it was delicious. <br/>Smoked sage Margarita, also awesome, just took quite a long time to make. <br/><br/>The only reason why I'll go back, is for a plate of fries and their crème brülée, which I wasn't able to fit in :(
Chantelle Diane Sikic
I was very surprised with the layout of this place, the atmosphere and vibe was great, along with the music and dancing on Friday night. Had the gourmet cheese burger which was ok but the burger patty was a tad bit dry but nonetheless still good. All in all give this place a go
Michael Morton
Had an early dinner at The Steamworks last night.. We were welcomed by our very friendly waitress who's service was very efficient and really good. Only realized upon arrival that they host a comedy evening on Wednesday nights, unfortunately we had already booked movie tickets and couldn't stay.. But we will definitely be back in the future to try it out! <br/><br/>When I enquired about the various craft beers on offer I was offered a small taster plate (free of charge), so that I could select my preference! Thought that was incredible service.. <br/><br/>I ordered the gourmet burger and it was really good, I did ask for it to be done medium and it was maybe a little overdone. But tasty none the less... <br/><br/>All in all, a really nice night out. To top it off they are linked up with The Entertainer app, so two mains and a couple craft beers totaled up to something ridiculous like R180.. Unbelievable value for money!<br/><br/>➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖<br/>Add on to my last review<br/><br/>Went in again last night and tried the chicken Prego which was amazing!! One of the better burgers I've had in a while! The starters of hummus and he focaccia balls was also a great choice! Love this place!!
Lucianrajah
Got here on a busy Saturday evening without a booking and the hostess made-a-plan for us. Although busy, the service wasnt compromised and the food and drink came quickly. The craft beer menu doesn't have much variety but what they do have is quality. Free samples of whiskey were also handed out but the burger was the highlight of the evening; a must try and definitely worth returning for.

Once again a great experience at Steamworks.... Good food (the Asian Style Pork Belly Burger blew my mind!), delicious and interesting cocktails with something for all palets. The funky decor adds to a great ambiance which is complimented by the upbeat music. We ended up staying till the late hours having a dance and a great time was had by all! Well worth the visit and we'll be back again soon!
Jade Farhangi
As someone who used to frequent steamworks and love everything about it, I have to say that every time I come back it gets worse. From food to service (which was dismal - waiter was rude and never around). I've never been more upset. Definitely not returning. Thanks for the disappointment 👍

I just love this place and the food. Love their stir fry their pizza and calamari. Love the Friday nights vibe and bottomless champagne. Great cocktails and craft beer and ciders.<br/>Always have a great meal and service is good.
Jaime The Jambo
Had a little visit at The Steamworks, interesting Steam Punk themes going on here. Started with two coffees, which were okay, they're not obviously baristas. The cocktails need a little refining, Mint Julip is almost too strong when weighed with its ingredients, and the drink with the lollipop is not strong enough. We ordered the cheese burger, which had an interesting taste and a side of chips, those were quite tasty. Also ordered the beef skewers, which had a really nice flavour, but were ice cold, I expected a decent salad and I got a pile of lettuce leaves. My friend ordered the puffs which were cute and tasty and what I think was halloumi and she quite enjoyed it. The dishes are small, and extremely expensive for what you get. This disappointed me quite a bit, they need to consider increasing the portions or dropping their prices, it's quite a shock when you read the menu, even more so when you receive your food. The music is far too loud for a bar/restaurant and they need to improve their furniture, it all looked old and torn and the high tables and stools were not at a comfortable height to eat. Also, it's quite cold inside, not great for a Joburg winter. Friendly enough staff, just a little slow. Love. Jambo.
Godfrey De Meyer
Nothing spectacular about the food , It's pretty standard pub fare. The menus could also do with new printing etc as they were pretty grubby and dirty when we were there. And one would have thought the toilets would have been cleaned after the previous night's (Friday) party goers.
Julia Kaleta
We came here for dinner on Friday night. The service is great, and there's a cool vibe in the bar area! However the food leaves something to be desired, particularly for the price paid. Not sure it's really value for money...but would be back for a drink and a dance anytime.
Nicola
On Saturday we went to Steamworks for a friends birthday, besides the fact that the food and drinks are great we had the most outstanding waiter, Tandai. He had the difficult task of serving a huge table which he did with ease, he didn't get a single drink or food order wrong and knew exactly who ordered what. This was especially difficult as everyone at the table moved around to chat so every time he came back we were all in different spots. Further as the band got going and all the ladies went to dance I could send him to find my boyfriend in the crowed to get his order. I didn't even have to explain who I was with, he knew exactly.  Tendai made the night so memorable for us and I would go back in a heartbeat.  GREAT job Tendai!!

We met some friends for dinner at The Steamworks on Friday night and it was a really nice evening. The decor is great and I can see why it's such a popular spot. That being said though, it's popularity is probably what will stop me from going again. We had to park in the Pineslopes centre and walk across due to lack of parking and it was insanely full inside, making it super noisy and hard to chat. <br/>The food was nice but not amazing. Our waiter was super friendly but lacking later on purely due to the busyness.
Ally
Pizza bases are thin and amazing - but be careful - not all of the toppings complement each other as well as one would expect... The pizzas are great nonetheless. The prego is amazing, too! Nice and spicy :). Drinks are alright and they also have happy hour! All in all, I would definitely recommend this place. Have been back on many occasions...great place to relax with friends and enjoy casual food after work/varsity.

The Steamworks has an exceptionally memorable interior and bar area. We booked a table for a Wednesday night which is also their comedy night. There was a bit of confusion with the cost per head but eventually it turned out to be R20 per person. The comedy started late but was a good time. The service was okay. We mostly had wine on the table, my sister had the Steamworks Mule which was much too sweet. <br/><br/>The night I visited they launched their new menu so there were many hiccups. The jalapeño poppers were great, tasted better than they looked. The veg nachos and were terrible - just soggy tortillas with black beans. The chicken skewers were tender but they only bought the satay sauce when we were nearly done eating, after asking the waiter where it was. <br/><br/>For mains, their ravioli and the pizza were the best dishes on the table. The ravioli portion size was small - three crumbed ravioli's. The chicken prego burger was enjoyable. Lastly, my sister ordered the pad Thai which was sour to the point where it was inedible. When we sent it back they said it was meant to be that way, although I've never had such a sour pad Thai. We opted to skip desserts. <br/><br/>Overall, mixed reviews with the food. The menu looks great but execution still needs some work. Not sure how soon I would head back but could be swayed once they've figured out how to serve their dishes. <br/><br/>
James Campbell
Went with two friends (Thursday Night) for some drink and food. We had the Chicken Prego that was seriously top draw. Wasn't a traditional Prego but was very tasty. Service was above par and the Waiter, Michael, was awesome. There was a live band that got the place pumping! It also had a bit of an older crowd (26+). All round good place to go. I would recommend going for a good vibe sit down.
Kholiwe Khosana
They have just changed the menu and by WORD!! What an improvement...<br/>So happy I tried the food!! Utterly delicious!! I've always liked the Steamworks but I have had one average meal before. But they really have stepped up to the plate!!! Keep up the good work
Adrian Ziller
Cold food. Brought late. And often with the wrong ingredients (had to show the manager his own menu to confirm this). <br/><br/>Avoid anything on the "sharing" menu, unless you are sharing with an Ethiopian hamster. <br/><br/>Honestly, I was more embarrassed for them than pissed off. Anyone won over by the "quirky" decor will quickly become disenchanted. <br/><br/>Bad food, served badly , in obviously opportunistic decor. <br/><br/>If they don't feel ashamed, they should.
Candace Gloag
I'd heard great things about this venue from friends and was looking forward to a family meal at a delightfully different restaurant. <br/>The food was fantastic. We loved the facoccia we shared as a starter. For mains we enjoyed pizza and burgers accompanied by great craft beers. Dessert was divine... 3.5<br/>Our waitress was friendly and helpful and prices seemed fair for the quality of food... 3.5<br/>The restaurant it's self was beautifully decorated in a weird and wonderful steampunk theme. Every nook and cranny was filled with interesting and intricate forms... 4<br/>Upon arrival the restaurant was buzzing with happy chattering patrons and the ambience was light and alive with good music playing in the background. All looked promising until an annoying high pitched alarm started going off every few minutes. Although no one could tell us what it was or whether it was likely to stop anytime soon I did get the feeling that it was a recurring problem. Matters were made worse when a terrible band started playing. Sadly the evening fizzled out pretty quickly as everyone asked for bills and drained out... 1<br/><br/>Zara Abdulla 30th review!

Arrived at 18:30 waited forever for drinks and 20:30 still didn't receive our food that has been ordered an hour and a half ago! Not cool. Only two barmen.
Garth Van Wyngaard
Worst experience to date. We did our part (made a reservation, arrived on time) our reservation was missed, steamworks then got their oldest tables together n put us in a corner, where we were told that most of what we ordered, they didn't have in stock. 6 drinks took over an hour and 1 didn't ever come at all.
Charlie SUPERSTAR
I visited these guys knowing what to expect - club where you can order some food - because of that, I thoroughly enjoyed myself. They have great cocktails!
Silindile Mncwabe
Okay service was slow had to wait to be seated waited for the menus leaving the downs they were playing music which I must say I enjoyed. The food was great I had a chilly prego which delicious, the steamed veggies not so much, my partner had a gourmet burger and given that he is not a burger fan he gobbled it down fast that's how good it was. Either than the slow service I had a lovely afternoon

The food (when it finally arrived) was decent-enough gastropub fare, but, having gone on a Friday night, we really struggled to get attention from overburdened waiters and we received snide comments from the manager when we complained that condiments had been brought only once most had finished their meals. The waiters blamed each other and were not on-top of what had been asked from others. It turned out to be comedy night and the speakers were ear-piercingly loud, so much so that some of us fashioned earplugs out of paper serviettes. The manager ignored our request to turn it down a notch. All round, we couldn't really wait to leave. I will not return in a hurry.

I was here for the first time on Sunday lunchtime for a meal and a few drinks. It was very empty when we arrived but had a decent feel to it. We were greeted nicely, shown to a table and provided with their food and drinks menus.Lots of craft beers to choose from, both on tap and bottled. I ordered three different bottled beers only for them all to be out of stock. I asked about their beers on tap, two were out of stock. We ordered a bottle of wine.....out of stock again. My wife ordered a gin and tonic......no tonic in stock. Not impressed at all. We finally found a bottle of wine they actually had in stock so rather than risk further disappointment we grabbed it as it was most likely the last one in stock! The food was really good, I had the Sunday pork roast which was really tasty. My wife had the fish cakes which were equally delicious and they were very accommodating to change some ingredients to suit our likes and dislikes. Nice. If they can sort out their stocks and ordering system then I would rate them higher. Maybe on a Friday or Saturday it would be better as we were told they had a very busy weekend. I see it purely as bad management and stock control. I don't accept excuses like that. If they are open they should have stocks in place, otherwise keep the doors closed on Sundays.

This place gets crazy busy and the cocktails are great. The food is not great, really not enough attention to the details and it seems like that is not what the business is about. Will be back for drinks but nothing to eat thanks

I think it is very important to mention first of all that this is not a restaurant, but more a club where you can eat also.<br/><br/>Ambiance: Club-like, with loud music playing and later in the evenings the music gets louder and people start to dance. This place is more for a party night out, rather than catching up with friends.<br/><br/>Drinks: They have a large variety of beers, craft beers, and international beers. All very good, but the international beers are steep priced.<br/><br/>Food: A small variety of food on the menu. A few meat and fish dishes, pizzas and pastas. The food was below average and nothing spectacular. I had the lamb dish with polenta, and it was just okay.<br/><br/>Service: Waiter was friendly and attentitive, although we were moved from one table to the other before we could finally settle at a table.<br/><br/>Price: Average.

Visually entertaining and somewhat inviting, the mural behind the bar is the star of the show. With a massive clock waving at you while having a glass of red wine and perfectly chosen music playing in the background, you can't fault it on its vibe. However, we ordered a Bacon Avo and feta pizza to share which just let us down. The title of the pizza should be "dry pizza base with a hint of those flavors". The vibe was also great until comedy night started. Either make the comedy night the whole restaurant or don't have it. Sub dividing a restaurant in 2 just didn't work and whoever was there earlier felt like they were spoiling everybody's evening just by being there. Not well thought out. Lastly on a positive note, our waiter was fantastic!

Lovely decor. The steampunk theme is what attracted me to this place. Small but interesting menu. Service was Quite slow but not too serious for a relaxed Sunday afternoon. Some of the starter dishes were slightly on the cold side. It was a very cold and wet day! Ok but then arrives my main...<br/>Butter chicken pizza drizzled with yoghurt. Only they clearly ran out of plain yoghurt so they drizzled my pizza in pink yogi sip. I kid you not! Epic fail!

Previously tried Steamworks but they were closed so had another go yesterday and it was open for lunch. I was very suspicious when we walked in and were the only guests inside. Always wonder what the food is like when it is so quiet. Waitress was great and told us about beers available and what was out of stock. Menu is interesting but limited. We ordered Thai noodles with chicken and ravioli but were told that ravioli wasn't delivered so we opted for lamb chump with polenta instead. The menu available on Zomato differs from the menu at the establishment, maybe they made some changes? Presentation was good and the food looked fantastic. The Thai noodles and chicken was spicy and the lamb very tender. Both delicious and I'll happily order same again. For dessert we tried the doughnut ice cream with candied bacon and mango ice cream with shortbread biscuit. It was superb. Although we were somewhat underwhelmed upon arrival we left satisfied and happy. Will be back, hopefully it will be busier.

Absolute disaster. Upon arrival, your nose is subjected to a degree of uncomfortably similar to a gym (minus the chlorine). The waiter was extremely unprofessional and lack of service was rather infuriating. The amount of time spend waiting for food can be compared to visiting your local traffic department....The food was worse than what you'd expect from a hostel cafeteria. I wouldn't go back even I'd I got paid.

We absolutely loved the steampunk decor from the pictures and could not wait to have our restaurant week meal at the steamworks. Our server Leandro was fantastic and very knowledgeable about the food! Unfortunately he was never made aware about what was actually out of stock and it was everything I ordered! Very sad face!!!!! I did not get to taste the popcorn chicken sandwich and also not the cheesecake that was bragged about. The mussel starter was very gritty and the flavor combination was not to my taste. The rump steak however was great and the herb sprinkle on the chips just gave it that extra edge! I tried the doughnut ice cream had candied bacon bits as garnish that really enhanced the flavor of the ice cream. Really disappointed by the feedback from the manager as to why the items were not available - "it was actually finished yesterday already" isn't exactly what you want to tell guests. Overall the atmosphere was great and will have to try it again on another day, when the cheesecake is in stock!

Stopped in for a quick bite to eat on the go. My wife and I had been meaning to try this place for a while. I am happy to see that the place has picked up a bit. The lunch vibe is relaxed and the wait staff are great. The pad Thai was delicious according to the missus. I had the pulled pork burger. Incredible flavor. And their chips are done the way you want them done, finished with a crack of rock salt. Good looking venue with an extensive beer menu we did not get to sample as we were out with our little chap. Will definitely be back for a few sample pints. Good place, nice vibe and tasty food. Do yourself a favor next time you are in Fourways.

The usual gang met up for our regular dinner sessions, and also to catch up before I went back to our mutual home country.<br/><br/>As I came straight from work, I was there an hour early before the agreed time of 7pm.  The place was very quiet with only a few table occupied.  I was quickly attended to and I ordered a bottle of sparkling water which as brought quickly but there was no slice of lemon in my glass!  I got up myself and asked the barkeep for a slice which he gladly obliged.  <br/><br/>I made use of the complimentary Wifi which had decent speeds to do some work whilst waiting for my friends.  When my friends finally arrived, surprisingly, it was difficult to catch the attention of any waiter!  Still the restaurant wasn't that busy but the waiters after dropping off 2 menus (there were 4 of us), were MIA.<br/><br/>Eventually, my friend had to flag one of the manager (?) and took her drink order.  She had a ginger ale kinda of drink which I had a sip and it was very "gingery".<br/><br/>Finally we managed to decide what we to eat and I gallantly chose the "Pad Thai" (Not e to Zomato Administrator - the menu listed here is not the one we received at the restaurant) <br/><br/>The food took a while to arrive and presentation wise, was nothing special.  Unfortunately, the taste was worse!  The box says "Pad Thai" but the contents were definitely 100% irrevocably NOT Pad Thai.  The taste was like a spicy sour stirfry.  The proportion of noodles to vegs/chicken were like 1:3, where I feel should have been the other way around!!  It was extremely unsatisfying meal for me and I had a tummy upset the whole night after I got home!  <br/><br/>The other diners also said that their meals were average, so gives me cause to believe that food is not their strong point.  I believe that it is very popular drinking hole but still why can't it have good food and good vibes and drinks?<br/><br/>A real pity though.

Very expensive, not much ambiance because the entrance fee was R150 per person, total ripoff for a Sunday. If it was not for the huge cover charge there would have been a lot more people there and my review would have been totally different.

We had a 30th birthday party here, and it was awesome! Great seats, delicious food, and great beers too! The music was good, we were able to watch the soccer and rugby 😊 thanks guys!

What a great night! Chilled evening with my buddy over beer and cheesecake. This place is for you if you want some cool background live music, cocktails , friendly staff and an ambiance that just "fits" you know... The lamb was falling to pieces , couldn't quite finish it , but I did try . The menu is creative so I think you might learn one or two things about your palate!Mandisa

Lovely little place. Our waiter actually made the experience all worth it. A very friendly guy, who happens to be the barman's identical twin. <br/><br/>Anywho back to the restaurant. Lovely set up. Love the clock/map centerpiece by the bar and the ceiling is done quite nice. I first sat on the stools and got uncomfortable cos of my short legs, so I went back to the normal dining chairs. The menu us is great, I tries the lamb dish which was really good. Dessert was amazing and looked good too. <br/><br/>Tried their beers and enjoyed the selection I had with some live music in the background. They were playing tunes am familiar with so my friend and I had quite an awesome time. Would highly recommend the place.

We actually went for some drinks at steamworks and decided to have lunch as well and damn im so impressed with the food. Very nice food and absolutely flavoursome food. Very nice experience and very happy with the place. They have some interesting drinks and a very nice food menu.

We were there Last night, good gourmet burger, would've liked more variety in the menu though. The mussel starter is a very generous serving indeed. <br/><br/>The decor is very unique.

The only place to do super delicious cocktails in joburg. Delicious food is a plus and such an inviting space to enjoy the company of friends and family.

What a great place to go! Such cool decor and excellent service. We were there for dinner and highly recommend the Duck pizza, pork springrolls and the beer taster board. Our waitress even selected a few beers for us and they were great. We will definitely be back!

I went to Steamworks for the first time today. Friendly staff and a relaxed atmosphere from the moment I walked in set the tone for the rest of my experience. This is one of the few restaurants I have been to that not only serves non-alcoholic beers, but serves Erdinger as opposed to Bavaria or Becks. The menu is written in such a way that you can't help but want to try a little bit of everything. I had the chilli lamb Chipotle laid on a bed of soft polenta. The lamb was done to perfection, with the meat literally falling off the bone, and the chilli was countered by a delicious hint of mint. The polenta and sauce added another dimension to this meal. All in all, o had a great time and enjoyed the food tremendously. Definitely worth a visit if you're in Fourways.

Came here for dinner with a bunch of friends on a Sunday night. Interesting assortment on the menu from pastas to burgers which they're known for. I had the mussels in cider which wasn't overwhelming. Their decor has that steam-punk vibe and their range of craft beers will satisfy the masses. Service was good but some of the staff forgot a few of our drinks orders which had to be repeated. The place becomes quite lively after 10 when the music is cranked up.

The decor and design in this place really sets it apart. From the massive moving clock behind the bar to the red leather used to cover everything from the roof to the staircase, this place got it right! Food was awesome, the pizzas are killer!! They serve a good Irish Coffee too 😉
Andy Bray
Great burgers and pizza's - We had the butter chicken pizza and the bacon and feta which scored as winners along with the gourmet burger, Epic selection of craft beers, Second time here always good service and music. The place was buzzing last night.

Tried the spiced Indian fish with handmade noodles and doughnut ice cream, Great vibe and great food! Will be back soon to try the rest of the menu. Music was more aimed at the younger market but had a great night here. Would really recommend  to try it.<br/><br/>Back here again. Restaurant was packed by large tables so we were all tightly packed in. The table all enjoyed the Prego, Mussels, Squid and Lamb and the very closed table next to us raved about the choc pudding. Service was good and altogether a great night.
Greg Wilson
Nice vibe and a lot of thought into the decor. The food unfortunately let's the place down. Greek salad was incredibly salty and the burger was bland and oily! Wouldn't do it again.
Bianca Allen
Great vibe and awesome decor but the food wasn't good at all😕 had the Salt and Pepper Squid starter which was way too peppery, the fish and chips was average and the very exciting sounding chipotle lamb was bland! The duck spring tolls were good but I won't rush back unfortunately!
Mike Le Cordeur
Great vibe, the salmon was awesome, service was a bit slow, which was surprising considering that it was rather quiet. I will be back, soon!

Attended a Dinnerclub here this past winter. Really impressive decor, with attention to detail. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal experience here. I love what I ordered with a friend, very different and tasted amazing. <br/>The service was good considering we had a table of +/- 16. The only negative, was that they had left their finished gas heaters on. This created a terrible gas smell, making people feel very uncomfortable, which we finally realized where it was coming from and asked for it to be closed. Else everything was great.

We went there for an office function yesterday. . We were greeted by the manager Steve and we're very well looked after by our waiter Answer. The food was excellent... I would definitely recommend the asian pork Burger and most definitely the mussels..they were excellent. Beer and cocktail menu were very good too. Would definitely go back there again without hesitation. BTW the menu on the Zomato app is outdated... some food and beer items have changed.

Haven't been here for a while and only have myself to blame... Love this place... Craft beers are awesome, but must try the Soweto Gold Apple Ale. The menu is limited, but the food is awesome, but you have to leave space for the dessert... Cookies and Cream Baked Cheesecake. <br/>But before we could get to desert, some person tried to sing and chased us away. Original rating was 4.5, but this is shocking, the owner must be on leave or something! <br/>

My opinion of this restaurant is both good and bad based on the different experiences that I have had.<br/><br/>So let's start with the good.<br/><br/>*Their collection of craft beers and cocktails is impressive and I had several cocktails that I really enjoyed<br/>*The hoison duck pizza is amazing. It's like peking duck, with all the trimmings but on a pizza!<br/>*The restaurant is beautiful!<br/><br/>And now the bad.<br/><br/>*Their mussels are about as bland as rubber, with the sauce being watery, saltless and actually horrible.<br/>*They have the audacity to serve 1 tiny little burger (around the size of 1 chicken licken slider) for R35. Ontop of that they were two of the worst sliders I have ever had! The corn slider was only beaten in dryness by the chicken slider.<br/>Disappointing!<br/><br/>Overall I would advise that you go for the pizza and cocktails but don't order the SLIDER! (not sliders like advertised)<br/>

I was completely unimpressed with every aspect of this restaurant with the exception of the decor, in particular the bar area is insanely impressive!<br/><br/>I was there for a friend's birthday party. The service was exceptionally slow! We frequently had to remind our waiter that our drinks had not yet arrived!<br/><br/>The food is of course the most important aspect of any restaurant. Penny and I shared a mains and starters. The chicken spring rolls were decent. However the ribeye was absolutely terrible! It was tough and dry and the flavour was awful. We couldn't finish the dish. One positive is that the chips were delicious!<br/><br/>Overall, an impressively decorated restaurant with slow service and lacking in the food department.<br/><br/>

I have been waiting to try this restaurant for a long time. It is hailed as a brilliant burger joint, this it is not. It is a gastro pub and not a burger joint!!!<br/>Thier food is good but not the best in town. Thier ONE burger is very nice, not in my top 10.<br/>Steak was good but very pricey due to a sur-charge on steak. <br/>I can say that thier ravioli was absolutely yummy to the maximum!!<br/>The look and feel to the restaurant is amazing, just a bitty they don't have aircon!!!<br/>Awesome selection of craft beers!!!<br/>This spot is worth a visit but should not be listed as an acclaimed restaurant or even a burger joint!!!

This is my second time at The Steamworks and I have to say service and quality are exceptional. 5h -6h happy hour post work got us in a happy mood. The nachos were the delicious and the best presented I've had in a long time and the live music made the evening one to remember! Would definitely recommend this for a post work cocktail or just an evening out with friends. Props to our waitress Memory for reminding us when our drinks were getting low.

A bunch of girlfriend's and I had an early dinner before going to a show at the Arena. I had the asian braised burger.. Wow It was my type of burger.
