Lovely place and very friendly.First time there but enjoyed every single experience.the food was fresh

I recently revisited Royal India in Sandton after a while and was pleasantly surprised by the delicious food. Although I don't remember much of my past experiences here, this time, the food really stood out. While there was a small hiccup with the beer on tap, the staff quickly addressed the issue by swapping out our pints for bottles. For starters, we ordered a platter of Tandoori meats and poppadoms, and I particularly enjoyed the chicken tikka smothered in cheese. It may not be the healthiest choice, but it was definitely worth it! Moving on to the main course, I ordered the spicy chicken bhuna, which was delicious. I'm a big fan of Butter Chicken Makhani, but I rarely order it at Indian restaurants because they often don't get it right. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the outstanding version they served at Royal India. The flavour was rich, bold, and exactly how I liked it. Furthermore, my colleagues ordered several curries and breads, which I was fortunate enough to try, and they were all impressively delectable. Overall, I'm extremely satisfied with all the dishes from Royal India and would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for an amazing dining experience. Thank you for a great evening!

Excellent food and service, I recommend for an authentic Indian food experience

I been to The Royal India many times but this time they won me for life time supporter. I requested the chef to make me and my wife Indian foods with continental touch , wow wow words are less to express my feelings. We enjoyed our marriage anniversary dinner and definitely recommend this place.

Simply excellent! Both the service and the food. Every time I travel to Johannesburgo I go to this restaurant. First, because I really like their food. Second, because they know how to prepare it gluten-free. Biryani and other recommendations of the waiter, Musa, are really really worth trying. Very recommendable place to eat in Sandton.

I fell in love with Indian cuisine from the first visit Royal India Restaurant! It was amazingly delicious that I tasted this traditional cuisine by my hands. Specially asked not spicy! Helpful staff! Great atmosphere! Honourable guests! Philosophical cuisine of India!

No complaints… good atmosphere, great service. Food 8/10. Well that’s same for all Indian restaurants across South Africa.

Good Indian cuisine. Value for money buffet. All items that I've ever tried on the menu lives up to expectations. Great place, good access to parking etc. A bit quite so if you want privacy, a good place to visit.

Very good food. Service was a bit slow. But the staff is helpful. I like the style. Don't forget to park at the forum and mention you go to the restaurant

Good food, Mushroom tikka was too yummy. Amazing Buttermilk. Must try Pudina parantha and Palak Paneer 😀. Keep up the good work. Will visit again..

I ate in this restaurant regular for around 2 months when I was in Joberg for an assignment. The food is authentic indian and hygienic. Thanks to Mandeep, the manager of this restaurant for making the experience so adorable. For anybody who wants try Indian food or for someone who is staying in Johannesburg for a short span and looking for Indian food, I recommend this restaurant. Thanks Pamela, Mosa and other staff for providing good service. All the best.

Great food! Fair price! Fresh ingredients come together in an aromatic fusion of flavours to tantalize the tastebuds... definitely one to pass on! (y)

I wasn't sure what to expect but heard it was very nice. We had a couple of starter platters, both meat and vegetarian. I decided to try a dish I've never eaten before, the lamb korma. The meat was really tender and the flavour excellent. The naan breads were delicious. I'll certainly be back! Could hardly move by the time I'd finished the meal...
Trevor Stuart Banks
Great food. Great decor and great service. The Butter Chicken is the best I've ever tasted. Ten out of ten.
Elvis Kwenzo Ntuli
Really loves this place, the food and service is on point
CoCo Tofie
Had an amazing and very tasty dish and the waiter was such a gentleman.
Trompie Van Der Berg
Fantastic service, great tasting food and the cheese naan is to die for!
Sharmla Mc Call
Service was below average. The starters were well priced and tasty but the main meal was disappointing........ we've had better in Johannesburg, won't be back.
Naukesh Singh
Food was not as good as I expected. I've had much better. However, the setting is excellent.
Tracy Judnick-Jooste
Wow excellent Butter Chicken..must try the cheese naan and Mango Lassee. .always comes up 5 star..service impeccable
Hope Jantjies
Not a bad service. Though stuff get to go all over the place when the restaurant is busy.
Sumir Mirchandani
Beautiful buffet of veg & non veg made today with lovely Deseret & ice cream I like food

I had a fish masala that was out of this world. I was highly impressed.

Ordered takeaway via Uber Eats. Red Snapper deep fried. Was absolutely delicious. Butter Naan and curry dipping sauce on the side. Would definitely order it again.

We had the best combo sit down meals after a long time . It was very authentic new launch combo menu . Its a really value for money a must try . once tasted never wasted!!!!

The worst buffet I ever had. These people serve stale meet with a lots of unhealthy corn flour coating to hide the stale smell. The staff are arrogant and will not address your concern. If you want to throw away 135 bucks and buy a stomach upset please visit. For a proper buffet please try Shahi Khana they serve almost 3 times authentic Indian dishes for almost 50 Zar less.

Warm place and conveniently located in the Sandton business areas. Walking distance from JSE.

They have a lunch buffet menu until 3 PM everyday - while ala carte is available all day long. The buffet ends with desserts - ice cream or falooda. They have a fully packed bar - with a creative bar tender.

The foodie delicious - but the highlight of it was Samir who serves well and is very soft spoken. We once reached Just before closing time - but he spoke his way through the chef's to serve us with equal energy as the 1st customer of the day.

Such people make the place with visiting.

Mango lassi is good - but you must be able to take a nap if you pair that with lunch / dinner. They will be happy to split it by 2.

You guys must change your prices u show us a price on your Zomato and when we arrive it’s 10% more also food not that
That great very mediocre
YummyFood
I ordered food from this place. The food came on time and was hot. Roti was really nice and tasty. The lamb curry was tasty but the quantity was too less. Also palak paneer not sure which palak they used. It was only looking green. No taste of Palak. Paneer was also hard. Didnt like the fiod overall.
Sharen Makadooj
Terrible dining experience and I’ll never go back. That quarter chicken was tiny, had no flavor, the chips were dry. The raita I asked for on the side also had no flavor and was runny. I ordered it thinking the tandoori chicken would be flavorful as is expected in North Indian restaurants. The samosas were tiny and had barely any filling. They are cutting costs so much that it shows in everything they do. Only positive is the friendly waiter. The manager is not friendly and walks around hoping to be invisible and not have to talk to any customers. I’m glad I ordered this little just to try out.
Ajay
This place is kind of ok place for having Indian style food. We tried chicken biryani, chicken kabab, rotis and vegetable pulav and it was not that great. All the items tasted as if frozen food was warmed in oven and served to us.
I would strongly recommend you to avoid this place if you can walk a little inside Nelson Mandela square since that are many good restaurants inside.
Radha Chhita-Nathoo
Love love love this place.
I have eaten at their restaurant off the menu and also had their buffet. Both was very good. Full of flavor. Good Indian food. Good wine selection.
Lara Burgess
Main courses were incredible. Taste and presentation were great! Dessert however was a massive disappointment. Ordered malva pudding and it came still in its tinfoil wrapping and ice cold. Complained, and it was brought back, sans wrapping, but still cold and served on a saucer. A saucer! With no apologies from the waitron / management. As for the service... waiters very polite, but lacking in basic knowledge regarding the food / the menu. Good for a night out if you feel like Indian food, but don’t expect to be impressed.
Warren Basel
Was in the area and had some time to kill before a meeting. Saw their lunch buffet for R110. Gave it a try . Food on the buffet was really not too bad and definitely value for money at R110.

As for the staff and service!!!! Gents you lack in this department BIG TIME, also no management on the floor. Clueless waiters running front of house. Epic Fail.

Nazeem Samodien
The restaurant itself is well placed. There's confusion as to where parking is allocated for restuarant customers.

The portions and pricing were acceptable.

The waiters were terrible. They didn't understand the menu as well as couldn't describe any of the meals on the menu.

We ordered the butter chicken and crab curry.

The butter chicken was quite salty.

The crab was off (there was discoloured meat with a foul smell) The waiter seemed confused as to what to do. The manager was completely nonchalant regarding it. We then reordered prawn curry.

I'd rather recommend Ghazals or Bukhara for a fine Indian dining experience.
Sue Hardie
Food good. Very overpriced. R440 per couple for an average 1 course curry dinner. Ladies toilet had no toilet seat, broken tap and no towels. Manager had no people skills.
Claire Frost
Typical Indian decor - nicely lit. Onion Baji’s were tasty but doughy in the middle and too sweet to be honest.
Lamb madras was fine but very generic. Chicken and prawn curry was off and inedible - I swopped it for a tikka masala which was also generic....no apologies from waiter or management. The okra was nice and fresh. So disappointing to go to yet another Indian restaurant that just hashes stuff together without fresh ingredients and inspiration from India itself. Dull and boring!
Worst music I have ever heard - makes you want to run screaming out the door - why don’t they just play Indian music instead of BAD lift music?
Best part of the evening: the Masala tea - delicious and unsweetened.
Never again....
Gio
RANDPARK RIDGE OUTLET:

Nothing special other than the decor. The food is average.
Had Lamb vindaloo. Very small portions of potato and of meat.
The meat quality is very very poor.
Certainly would not rush back neither recommend it.

Sadly dissapointed!!!!

Gio
0765094590

Went for an early dinner prior to FNB whisky festival
Service was good and professional
Decor typically Indian but lacking in ambience but in fairness it was early in the evening
We ordered Chicken Tandoori hot - accompanied by fried rice and a salad
The other mains were lamb rogan josh medium.
Naan bread served on side.
Chicken tandoori was a bit dry. Lamb by all accounts excellent.
Promise_foodie
First time attempting Indian buffet, was expecting spicing foods but to my surprise the Food was not too hot and very enjoyable.
Service was great too as they catered well for myself and some colleagues.

Great Atmosphere , Great food , Great People, on point service! If you want to go to india for the night without the long flight visit The Royal india for the absolute best in indian cuisine !
Shravani Sharma
My business partner and I visited The Royal India for lunch. What a pleasure to dine in a fine top class restaurant. We had the most divine and tasty prawn dish with authentic Indian flavored spices. The service is always so graceful and warm. Right at the end of the dining experience we noticed they have a 3 course lunch buffet and dessert for only R 110 ! Wow that is real value for money!
I would recommend it anyone looking for an experience of such caliber in the Sandton area!
Arty Pur
Tried out the 'Royal India' at The Forum last evening. The starters, Chicken Hara Kebeb and Fish tikka, came pretty quickly, but were stone cold! The flavour was absolutely missing. The mains too were a let down. Dal fry had too much salt, and Chicken Bhuna did not taste fresh. The garlic naans were cold as well and came wrapped in cloth napkins which were smelling.
A complete let down!
Aman Verma
Was staying in Sandton during an exhibition . Ok Quite nice when we talk about the curries , Tikkas and bread . Every thing was good .Especially the Dal was superb with right spices and herbs. The only part not so great was service . But it's fine . What matter most was to have a filling Indian dinner after 5-6 days ..
Sharima Bramannan
I’d be interested to find out how this restaurant keeps busy. We were going into the convention centre, saw the restaurant, then decided to eat. I liked the good tho. Had a lamb korma...I liked the fact that they agreed to make it hot for me...was a very nice flavour :-)
Robyn Lin
food was ok but not impressive at all, i think the restaurant is surviving due to their location but not their quality. service can definitely also be better. so far won't be returning there as there are many other indian restaurants in Joburg that can provide much better standards.
Gabrielle Brookstein
Went to the Randpark Ridge branch and so happy we did. Service amazing. Food (butter chicken and chicken vindaloo) delicious!!! Super quiet but not sure if it's because it's a Sunday or because people don't know about it yet! We loved loved loved everything about it! Will definitely be back with friends!!!
James Brown
Beautiful experience in the Vip dinner @ The Royal India Sandton branch opposite Sandton convention centre.
I enjoyed my dinner with my business associates last night.
I been informed that they going to start Lunch Special Buffet soon.
Can't wait to treat my whole family.
Food is out of this world and staff is always on board.
Keep it up The Royal India management team .
We ordered food from The Royal India through UberEats last night. The food quality and flavour was extremely poor. All of the dishes (Chicken Tikka Masala, Dhal Makhni, Kingklip Masala and Prawn Tandoori) had a uniform flavour as if they were cooked with the same base sauce. To add insult to injury the value for money was extremely poor. We paid R700 for extremely mediocre food. Our guests chose to eat leftovers we had at home after finding the food unsatisfying. Will definitely not be ordering or visiting here in the future.
Rahul Mullick
My first visit to Jo'berg and the first Indian restaurant at grabbed a meal at. Overall average experience. The service seemed slow while there was just one more table occupied besides mine. The Tawa Chicken was ordinary as was the Dal. They portions were quite sizable and good for two people. Since the food seemed a bit bland, I ordered the Chilly Paratha - it was really hot !!! Watch out. 2 mains along with a Garlic Naan, Chilly Paratha and Mango lassi came to around 450 rand. (A suggestion: pls serve Red Onions and not the white ones when Indians request for Onions and Chillies on the side)
Amita Davane
Taste and quality of food is really poor
Plus when order arrived the packaging of meal is poor and food is spilling out of container.
No value for money
Swetha Suneja
Though we loved the fine dining experience at The Royal India, somehow the food and the flavors here didn't impress us. We choose to dine out here on Valentine's day.

The interiors are stylish and well sophisticated but this lavish restaurant didn't WOW us. We ordered Chicken Tikka for entrees, a portion of Butter Chicken for Main Course and for the breads we ordered Tandoori Roti. Royal Special Falooda for desserts.

Chicken Tikka was succulent and yummy but the Butter Chicken was not the best and the breads tasted Ok. Falooda was delicious when compared to the other restaurants in Jo'burg. The food arrived at a stipulated amount of time with generous portions. The staff were friendly. However, the food here is pretty expensive.

Overall, the restaurant is high-priced but their Falooda is a must try!
Sunil Punjabi
This restaurant does not serves water, you have to buy it. The price per dish is quite high almost double than a normal restaurant. The variety of food is quite limited and ambience is not that great, the only reason for it to be pricey Is the location which I don't care a damm for would rather prefer Raj with better variety and less price with better taste.
Clare Appleyard
The Royal India has always been a mystery to me - I've never seen it busy but yet it's been there for a good few years. As a general rule I'd rather eat "ethnic food" (for want of a better phrase) in a genuine setting. For me, that translates to Indian food in Fordsburg, not Sandton.

However, expansion of our travel club's restaurant programme had me exploring convenient locations in Sandton, culminating in my lunch at The Royal India.

It's a classy, well decorated restaurant with a posh kind of feel to it, but still has a pleasant ambience. As it was lunch time I ordered the half Tandoori chicken which arrived quite promptly. It was a mountain of food, served with chips, and rice, and salad. The lettuce was crisp and fresh, the chips were quite tasty and the rice was perfect. The Tandoori chicken was tasty with a slight heat to it, nothing major and was quite succulent.

For dessert I sampled the restaurant specialty, The Royal Falooda. If you told me I'd enjoy vermicelli noodles in a milkshakes I'd have called you mad - but somehow it works. The dessert is a kind of Indian milkshake, strawberry flavoured with ice-cream and falooda seeds, essentially the seeds of sweet basil plants. Somehow it works and the entire combination is quite delicious and well worth a sample.

Prices are not cheap - location is prime opposite the Sandton Convention Centre, but it does provide a good dining experience.
Jennifer Barnett
Terrible dining experience after having received a dirty fork that I put into my mouth not having looked at the bottom of the fork where all the food of the previous diner was left behind. Service was equally terrible and food was bland and in the light of all this overpriced too!
Pavi
Great food ...great atmosphere ...great service. ..I visit this restaurant at least once a month. .
Charles
Total disappointment. The only thing worth eating was the naan. The curries appeared not to be fresh, its as if someone just took a whole lot of spices and threw something together. Prepared with no passion. Bill was expensive totally not worth it.
Monique M Kruger
Ordered from The Royal India off Mr Delivery. The chicken in the butter chicken was absolutely rotten - when I called the restaurant to complain they did not even sound suprised. DO NOT EAT FROM THIS RESTAURANT.
C Anthonio
One of the best indian restaurant in Sandton.Great for a big group at the VIP section. The service was beyond my imagination. We really enjoyed Rajah menu a perfect Royal food glittering on table. All in all had a great time in Royal India.

Those who knows what is authentic indian foods a good news The Royal India serves the best Indian food we ever had In Sandton. Me and family went for lunch today and were very impressed from Staff and presentation of the whole restaurant and foods as well. Being indian we know our foods.
Food was really authentic and flavoured what normally you get in Five start hotels in India. We had lamb and chicken dishes and one vegetable dish and finished our lunch with mouth watering Faluda . Definitely will be back. I wish I could give rating more than five.
Niren
Very disappointing, over priced and extremely underwhelming. The dishes have excessive food coloring and appears to look great but the taste is far from it. Definitely skip this one...
Riaan Bosker
The quality of the food was disappointing. When we sat down we were told there was no lamb, after checking with the kitchen they were able to produce two poorly executed lamb vindaloos. Overpriced and not recommended.
Charmaine
Been wanting to try this restaurant far a while but sadly it did not live up to the 4.1 rating at all. Food was very bland and underwhelming.
Serena Seunarain
Indian cuisine for me has always been about the experience along with the dish itself. Royal India offers an abundance of flavours. The Lamb Seekh kebab worked wonders for me and appealed to my taste buds on a new level. The ambiance was elegant and chic with hints of India all around...
Flh
Good food, good service! Only Stella beer on tap, but other bottled beers and wine. The food is mild at all spice levels but very good. Roomy dining area, great bar area. I prefer this over The Raj.
Suchismita Simhadri
Love this place !!! spell-binding ambience giving a true touch of India!! Service is good. Love the food here. Expecially the chef special chicken masala and prawns masala. Would love to visit again .

We hosted an event for 60 people at The Royal India. The management and staff went out of their way to ensure that our experience was a pleasant one and accommodated all our requests.

The food was enjoyed by the guests, particularly the chicken tikka, mushroom and potato starters ,saag paneer, butter chicken and lamb madras.

Looking forward to going back.
Varinder Singh
I went to The Royal India Sandton branch with my family for dinner and it was the best Indian food we had . We had one non veg platter and one veg platter for 8 people. I can challenge that The Royal India has the best tandoori grills and for our surprise the main course were prepared with skills too. My wife order the butter chicken and it was the best butter chicken we shared .
We so happy to find The Royal India . Staff is very friendly and welcoming, The Restaurant is designed very skilfully and well Managed
We congratulate The Royal India Management for keeping up the standard of Indian cuisine in South Africa.
We will definitely be back .
Jay Jay
Definitely not worth the 4.1 rating. I had the butter chicken. It wasn't flavorsome at all. Almost tasted like dishwashing liquid. Definite no no.
Anusha Lalla
I have been to Royal India twice : once for dinner , I had veg Hakka noodles which I thought were a bit plain. I had falooda for dessert very yummy. The restaurant is nice and big and the waiters are friendly and helpful. The second time I went for a business lunch .. We decided to only have starters .. An array of starters : onion bhaijis, paneer tikka , cheese and corn samosas, dum aloo. All were superb.. I found that the dum aloo had too much cardamon so couldn't eat too much of it. I had a falooda again which was really the best I have had in Jhb. Definitely going back
Elle
When you see Indian people eating at Indian restaurants that's when you know it's got to be good. I had dinner here this evenig with a girlfriend. Our vegetarian starter platter had so many different treats with delicious dipping sauces. The corn and paneer samosas where delightful. Mains was soft lovely Chicken Korma, Prawns Masala and white fluffy bamsati rice. The service was great and the manager (a lady from India who we could not really understand her accent) but her hospitality was good. Our waiter was very friendly and on point. Definitely one of the best Indian restaurants in this area.
Elize Burger
WOW!! Best meal I've had since I moved to JHB 2.5 years ago. We had the chicken Korma and Lamb Madraswala for mains, and wow - best chicken Korma ever! The service is EXCELLENT. Everything was perfect. One of my new favourite places in jhb!
CA Gaurav Agarwal
A good, rich and high quality dining experience. The service is excellent. As the name ambience of the place is also royal. The bar is big and fantastic.
I tired the vegetarian food and it was delicious.
The best restaurant for Indian food within the area.
A must visit place.
VM
This is right opposite intercontinental hotel. Ambience was very good. I had ordered fish masala and chili paratha. Taste was good but paratha wasn't a good combination with fish curry :)
Hardie Singh
Really pathetic food & not worth the money! Had some foreigners to entertain and was red faced to get the pathetic starters! Had to walk out without even ordering main course! Waste of time/ money & efforts.
Sbusi Dlamini
I was craving Indian cuisine so i decided to give this spot a try. In regards to the service it was fine, attentive waitrons and managers. I ordered the lamb special and chicken tikka. Both dishes were really just ok. The presentation was great but they weren't hot firstly, if you love hot food that can be quite a let down. The sambals weren't very appetizing but they were ok. It wasn't the worst experience I've had but would have expected better from an Authentic Indian restaurant
Mainza Chizyuka
Authentic Indian dishes, lovely ambiance, friendly staff, great service. Will definitely go back.
If you don't have expectations of an authentic Indian Cuisine, this place is okay. The other one next door , Raaj is also worth trying. But for someone longing for Indian food this was a respite
Shumaiz Hashim A.P.M
I think I went to this restaurant with an over expectation seeing from out side. The starters chicken 65 was tasty but far from the original, totally different dish. The main course I had, chicken kadai too was not the original recepie, wonder it was an Indian chef. The service was ok and the interiors was confused Indian fusion
Claudia Emanuel
Good service. I got really excited when I saw vegetable manchurian on the menu and told the waiter that gobi manchurian was my favourite dish while traveling in India. He was so kind by asking the chef if they could could organize gobi manchurian instead - but to no avail. Delicious nonetheless.
Imtiaz Ahmad
One of the best Indian restaurant in Jo'burg. Right from the awesome location to brilliant ambience to a nice vibe... Friendly and active waiters, who will not leave you unattended. Very good food, but the service can get a bit slow at times

Also have a lunch buffet on weekdays and sunday, and I tried one of the sundays. The chicken starter as well main course was very-very tender, almost melted in the mouth. Vegetarian starter was onion bhajia, which I would not consider as a veg starter, when its just one veg starter in place, could have something better may be. Mutton main course was ok, not so great. The veg manchurian was way too tender, that it just melted on the plate. The dessert could have been better - it was sewaiyan. But overall the taste was good and complete worth the price.

Ala-carte food has always been good so far.
Philip Tillman
If you are looking for an Indian restaurant full of Indian people, you've found it!
The food here was very well presented, quickly delivered and tastes good.
I would recommend this place for good service, pleasant food and a generally well run and busy restaurant.
Chris Smyth
Ambience and decor beautiful. Sadly the food and service was only average. Food a little bland, except for a really good palak paneer. Service by a waiter who could not understand us. Also slow. Brought the wrong wine.
Kasturi Ramanathan
Wosh. What joy it is when you find that Indian restaurants abroad try to serve an authentic spread.

I was not craving for naan and gravies tonight. But coz my vegetarian colleagues were headed there, I had no other option but to go.

Location : right outside Nelson Mandela Square. Took a walk down to the hotel.

Service : Decent. A Non-Indian waiter spoke broken Hindi, which felt nice to hear.

Ambiance : Fine Dining kinds. Royal Red and Black furnishing. Very Classic!

What we ordered:
*We wanted a spicy Panneer dish. And they agreed to make us a Panneer Makhani. Soft pieces of panner. Perfect gravy.
*Dal Makhani : decent. Not too great to my tastes. But the rest seemed to like it.
*Missi Roti, Tandoori Roti, Romali Roti and Garlic Naan : Large in size. Served beautifully in baskets!
*Mango Juice : Fresh! Beaten up Mango. Thick and full of natural flavour.
*Salad and Raita : decent.

Cost : 450 for three including tips. Now, this place is finely priced with reference to the area!

Bottom line : tasty comfort food for the Indians out there. To the rest of you, try this place first when you want to get introduced to the Indian style of eating.
Sandeep
Unhygienic , found dead COCKROACH in my vegetarian food. Manager was not sincere about this and made fun of us. In hindsight, it was expected as there was always a foul smell in the sit in area.

In the past, its would charge TIP/ gratuity to the bill with out informing the patrons. Thus would collect double tip from the people not in the know of this practice.

Will not recommend.
Zara Abdulla
Great place to have some Indian food! The naan bread is great and so is the Butter Chicken. I also sampled some of the Prawn Curry which was delicious. I'd certainly agree that it is the best Indian restaurant in the Sandown area.
Chelsea Twiss
Absolutely loved our time at The Royal India this evening! We were really looked after well as the waiters and managers were very friendly and welcoming. Our food was delicious! The butter chicken was amazing. Probably the best Indian restaurant I have eaten at in Joburg. Highly recommend it!
Miguel De Freitas
Royal India is a warm Indian restaurant serving delicious curries, naan and basmati. Their winner is the butter chicken with cheese naan. Prices are very reasonable while still maintaining a very classy atmosphere.
Bobby Bhugwandin
The restaurant has a warm friendly atmosphere with very tasteful interior decor. Food was delicious, well prepared, excellent flavor and texture. Staff was attentive and prompt.
Gerald Jacob
This restaurant was suggested by a few friends. I eventually tried it out. The service was great, attentive waiters and we had just left a wine show and had our own booze. The manager gladly accepted that we had our own wine and charged us a fair corkage rate. The food was great and we order, chicken, seafood and a veg dish. The portions where generous and the dishes all tasted great. My mates and I will definitely be back to this restaurant.
TheJoburgFoodie
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to The Royal India. So impressed with the high standard of service, our waiter was fantastic, friendly and evidently pretty clued up on the menu - always a winning sign in our books - and he offered suggestions and gave his opinion on what we were ordering. For starters we shared the lamb samoosas, the dum aloo - potato and paneer dumplings, and the tandoori jingha - prawns marinated in yoghurt and spices. All superb! We loved that while the dishes were spicy the spice was not over powering and it still allowed the other spices and flavours to shine. For main course we had the lamb korma and the chicken and prawn curry. Both were delicious but, for us, the korma was definitely the standout, a rich, creamy, nutty sauce with succulent, tender lamb pieces! It must be said that The Royal India is quite pricey - mains average at around R120 - but that said the portions are generous and the food is delicious!
Kate Els {IndiKate.net}
I absolutely loved the food here. The portions were really generous and were excellently spiced. The waiters and restaurant manager were very attentive and made sure everything we needed was right there. I found the wine list to be a little pricey with few options under R200, but wine by the glass wasn't badly priced and the better option I felt.
Ryan
They don't do home deliveries as advertised! Get told to call Mr Delivery. Why advertise home deliveries if you can't offer the service? Poor form
Ty Maletsky
The Royal India is the Indian experience we have all missed in Joburg.

From the decor to the waiters and the chef, everything is just like being in India.

Mr. Singh has really got a Gem here !!
Binita Mistry
Wow is all that I can say. We went to The Royal India last night. The service, food, and decor was fantastic. The flavour of the food was amazing and the portion sizes were huge with lots of meat/chicken and fish and not just the gravy unlike other Indian restaurants in Johannesburg. Today was my first time at Royal India and this restaurant has exceeded my expectations - great vibe, impeccable service and amazing food. The menu offers a wide range of dishes which leaves you spoilt for choice. The butter chicken, fish masala, royal lamb special 1, keema cheese naan, gajjar halwa and saffron kulfi are all a must have. This is definitely the best Indian restaurant I've been to so far!

This is my new favorite Indian restaurant. Not only is the food fantastic, but the decor is simple and effective, the staff are attentive and friendly, and the location is central if you live in the Sandton area.

Now on to the actual food. We ordered the:
Butter Chicken, which was probably the best I've had thus far, with the perfect balance between sweet and spice
Fish Masala, the fish was perfectly cooked, most other places I have been to tend to over cook the fish.
The Royal Lamb Special 1, which according to the menu is a "Must Try". This is one exquisite dish and you won't be sorry if you order it. The Lamb is melt in your mouth with the perfect combination of spices and sauce.
Kheema Cheese Naan, which is a a Naan filled with cheese and mince. Very very delicious as a starter.
To finish off the evening we ordered the Saffron Kulfi and Gajar Halva

All in all a fanatic restaurant

We went to this establishment on Saturday the 11th of Jan to celebrate a 61st birthday. Service was very attentive and waiters showed extra care with my 80 year old granny who couldn't walk up the stairs which was appreciated. In terms of food this was prepared with care and we enjoyed all the dishes. However I would like to see more options on the menu. Also I didn't enjoy the waiter steering us to the set menu when we specifically stated that we were dining ala carte. If you do get a chance to visit here make sure you are seated upstairs its a wonderful experience.

I've been 3 times since they've recently opened In the heart of Sandton and I am truly impressed with level of service and the taste of the food every time, so I decided to write a review. You will be spoilt for options here (being a vegetarian this is sometimes a problem but they have a whole page of vegetarian dishes and more ) ... The waiter advised on the vegetarian manchurian, which was amazing ... I had ordered it hot and they really do mean hot ????. Would add this place to my top 3 Indian restaurants in SA.

It was truly a night of “Glitz and Glamour” as the who’s who in the industry were invited to share the vision of a growing entrepreneur Mr Jagjit Singh for his grand opening of The Royal India Sandton.

Mr Jagjit Singh welcomed guests personally to share with them his hospitality for which he is already well renowned for. The invitation list was the Crème de La Crème of dignitaries from various divisions of the private sectors and also included high profile Government Officials, namely Prof. Alfred Nevhutanda (Chairman of the National Lottery Board of South Africa), Mr Daya Govender (Director General – Department of Public Works of South Africa), Dr MDC Motlala, (Chairman of various businesses in South Africa), Deputy Minister Obed Bapela, (Minister Department of Co-Operative Governance and Traditional Affairs), Mr Saul Gumede (CEO of Dijalo Properties Group) and Miss Nozipho Sangweni ( PRASA Black Empowerment Woman Partner and Dealmaker) to a name a few.

VIP guests included keynote speakers, Honourable Mayor Parks Tau (Mayor for the City of Johannesburg), Sponsorship addressees were Mr Randhir K Jaiswal (Indian Consulate General), Dr Gwen Ramogopa (Gauteng ANC Deputy Chairperson), Mr Xolani Qubeka (Black Business Council) and MrSipho Claassen (CATHSETA).

The master of ceremonies announced the much awaited hour with curious guests and on-lookers, to much of their delight and awaited hunger, the glorious moment of cutting the red ribbon had finally arrived to officially endorse that The Royal India had official opened its doors to becoming South Africa’s best luxurious Lifestyle Restaurant in the Southern Hemisphere.

Friends, colleagues, business partners and Government officials cheered on as the proceeding were underway to one of the best delectable evenings ever experienced.

Entertainment and India Cuisine were unsurpassed, jaw dropping coupled with the outstanding performance by a Belly Dance Group who entertained guest throughout the glorious unforgettable evening. And unforgettable it was, had there been a Grand Piano I am sure that even the late Nat King Cole would have sand his song “UNFORGETTABLE”

One would normally associate events like these with utter chaos and confusion, however, the evening proved to be one of serenity with warmth and passion, waiters chefs and attending staff alike were in complete sync as if it was just another Royal day at The Royal India, guests were going about their own socialising conversations on their tables just as they would had they been relaxing in the comfort of their home, and home it was at The Royal India Sandton!

Mr Jagjit Singh for the delightful host that he was on this evening and always will be, made it is personal mission to visit each and every one of his seated guests at their tables as a gesture of goodwill for his hospitality to acknowledge that all his invited guests were not only his friends or acquaintances but rather that they were now experiencing a hospitality that would last a lifetime. And so elated was he! That I sincerely have no dought in my mind that all his guests and guests of honour shall be returning to The Royal India to experience this untimely Royal moment all over again.

The evening proceeded late into the early hours of the next morning and it seemed that guests were not willing to part that soon from the venue as they normally would at any other, This once again is clearly an understatement and it is only now that one would realise that once you are in the hospitable company of Mr Jagjit Singh and his staff, believe me! Time will stand still, as he himself, will dedicate all the time he has to accompany, entertain and make sure that you do have a very comfortable stay at The Royal India Sandton!Rajeshchandra Devjee

Of the many choices for North Indian cuisine in Sandton, this should definitely not be anyone's first choice. The food is very average. I had a chicken and prawn curry that was over cooked. My boyfriend had the Dhal Makhani which had a stone in it!!! Very disappointing, especially for the price you pay. Will not be eating here again.

Great Food, Great service and a great vibe. Had a birthday celebration there and were really impressed with the restaurant. The owner, Jagjit Singh went out of his way to cater for our group. It is now our Indian restaurant of choice!
