Review Hodges Coffee House - Sandton

Jo Maema
This was my third visit to the center. The Woods, formally known as the Colony, has gone through a transformation. It's anchored by Checkers Foods, with a number of restaurants serving different styles of cuisine, including Italian and French, among the restaurants in the center, like Pronto, Besos, etc. It's easily accessible, importantly It's wheelchair accessible from the front ( Jan Smuts) and also the back ( Checkers side) where most of the parking is.
T
This centre was built so well with a great selection of places depending on your outing. Parking is safe and convenient, everything is clean and modern!
Robert Getkate
Just enough to suit your daily needs. Restuarants are quality, pharmacy is good and Checkers forms your daily bread and milk run but range covers the basics only.
Grant Smeets
clean, efficient, and secure. It's a lovely place to do my shopping. I just wish their liquor store was open already
Ruairi Sheridan
Nice refurb of the old Colony Shopping Centre. Good, if tiny, Checkers. Parking lot is still frustrating with tiny bays and many cars parked badly enough to block bays beside them.
Kione Chetty
A welcomed upgrade to the Craighall shopping scene. Multiple eateries, fantastic coffee and a bespoke Checkers with a Krispy Kreme stand. A modern, upmarket one stop shop. Our favourite has to be Plato for that pick me up and Liberte for amazing French cuisine

Management must improve its interruption But staff and service I love it. Also always clean though such a busy place đź’•
Grant Smeets
always effecient and friendly service, even the car gaurds are very helpful and really enjoy the lady who makes the borewors rolls just outside of the shop.
Patricia Marsh
Seems like an up and coming place with nice Brunch spots. I found the parking a little confusing, there's more around the backend of the shopping centre.
SHARON PIERUCCI
Have visited Pronto for a meal & takeaways, very popular enjoyed everything. The Cookery is the best whether you are in a group or just with a friend. Lots of fun, many different choices of food & menus. Your foodie experience includes all the recipes of the day. Eat, drink, laugh & share all the lovely food. Highly recommended. If you like crystals, candles, incense, beautiful statues or similar goods this is the place to visit. Although I have been there many times the name escapes me at the moment. The shop is in the opposite corner to Pronto. Plenty of parking around the shops & underground next to the Cookery.

Thank you for having so many vegetarian options and a vegan menu. The food was delicious and the service was friendly and lovely.

Discovered Hodges about several weeks ago and I keep on going back. The food is affordable, the staff are friendly, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming and most importantly, the food is absolutely delicious!
Debra Deats
Personal & warm service with attention to special needs. All welcome - even smokers! All day and good variety of breakfasts. Great atmosphere.
Xiuping Ed Zhao
Very authentic Brit style Sunday lunch roast. The indoor space is limited and it was fully booked. The gravy/Yorkshire pudding combo is delicious!
Alexander John Purves
Their eggs benedict is to die for ..wish I could obtain the hollandaise sauce recipe
Barry Dwolatzky
I loved the Hodges' Sunday Roast! The staff and management were extremely helpful and cared about getting good food in front of us. We will definitely be back soon! Thanks Hodges team!
Ed Dineke Fivaz
Warm, friendly , good vibe, special people and good home backed scones with coffee served with lots of smiles and great service. Can become habit forming.
Xaverius Prins
The food was great. Nice, quiet get away spot. They cater for vegetarians with a great selection to choose from.
Eve Ebenezer
Always a great place to go to.Food is Ä‘elicious, service fantastic
Keith Fallick
Food extremely good? Treat you like one of the family.
Siobhan Lee Ansley
Was very excited when I popped in and there were still cheese scones left, found out there might be a reason for this. Bought them home for the family for lunch, what a disappointment!! They tasted like they where made on the weekend, not the cheese scones I love. Ended up feeding them to the birds. Guess I will be making my own from now on.

Best kept secret in Jozi !
Guki Fichtenbauer
Love the atmosphere, the vibe, the service, the friendliness and THE FOOD!!!
Carmelita Oosthuizen
Meals are well priced and I like the homey atmosphere.

Had a great Sunday lunch at Hodges for R120. Roasts, dumplings, and vegetables. Good service, hot food, engaged owner. Well done!
Christine Buchanan
I ordered the "Legendary Scones" which were supposed to come with jam and cheese. I had to ask for cheese. Scones were very tough and chewy: hard to cut, hard to eat. Very disappointed.
Eve Ebenezer
Just got back from Hodges walked out of the restaurant, it is now being managed by a new owner who is extremely rude. We wait over 30minutes for our order and when it arrived the order was incorrect. There is one waiter who doesn't seem to be coping. I have been a regular visitor to Hodges but I must admit the new management totally sucks, disgusted!!!!!

Good old Hodges is my favourite breakfast place. Whenever I’m hungry after Saturday or Sunday morning yoga, that little vegan Demi hodge breakfast is my spot hitting love. Who doesn’t love scrambled tofu?! And besides, if you’re truly practicing body, mind and spirit, nothing will add to that than the vegan Demi hodge breakfast. Don’t get me wrong I’ve often craved the giant cheese scone and I would devour that entire scone the size of my fist.
Robyn Lin
A really good place for weekend breakfast or brunch, chilled and laid back, nothing special yet a very special place to treasure around this area.
Craig Nicholson
Three of us decided to return for brunch. I am Banting and tried to order a breakfast and asked if I could substitute the toast and chips for something healthier. The waiter flatly said no.<br/><br/>So I ordered the R115 rump steak special with a side salad. The salad was ok, not fantastic but the rump was over cooked and dry. The manager offered me a burger patty as a replacement but it was delivered smothered in BBQ sauce which I can’t eat.<br/><br/>Our meal took close on an hour to prepare and wasn’t delivered together.<br/><br/>When I asked the manager why I was charged full price for the meal he said he will fix it next time. I don’t think there will be a next time. What is really sad is that we’ve had brunch here 3 times before and it was great. Today the service was dismal and the manager didn’t even think of discounting the meal.

This restaurant is exactly what it claims to be. The food is good and the prices are not high. The waiters were very friendly and the location is very convenient!
Joash Narainsamy
This is a very average, inoffensive neighbourhood cafe. Staff are pleasant and helpful, food is good and unpretentious. A good spot to catch up on work or pleasure.
Yohali Brutus
Great cheesecake :) Place is in a cosy corner at the Colony. Bookstore next door offers traditional feel. Looking forward to trying other stuff on their menu
Meagan Whitehorn
Very quaint little restaurant with a very homely feel. We had a nice lunch and the food was enjoyable but did not blow my mind. Kind of got what you expected, not pleasant surprises in terms of tastes or innovative ingredients!
Food Lover Deluxe
Sadly, deteriorated lately - won't be going back soon.<br/><br/> Friendly owners, excellent service and best old style Sunday lunch in Johannesburg. And, you can have all the roast meats on offer for no extra charge. Definitely going back for seconds.
Nicole
A great place to meet for breakfast or a late lunch. Nice tables outside in a relaxed atmosphere. You can sit outside with your doggie on a leash :-) I love their omelettes!
Bridget Meyer
Such a cute little cafe tucked away in The Colony centre. Had a delicious breakfast here where service was on point and friendly. We just had simple breakfasts of eggs, bacon and toast and mince on toast, but will definitely go back to try some other meals on the menu.
Chrisel Vd Merwe
Good for vegans and vegetarians. Free wifi. Style of food and decor is a bit old fashioned, but it also makes for a comfy and cozy feel. Will come here again.

I have been coming to Hodges on and off for about twenty years now.<br/>Mostly I went for breakfast, but the pies are worth a mention too.<br/>Today after a long interval I went back.<br/>Very little had changed. <br/>The menu is still the same. The staff still make you feel at home. Perhaps the pot plants are a little taller.<br/>It is a place of quiet constant pleasure in a hurly burly world.<br/>I would give five out of five for breakfast if they served back bacon rather than shoulder bacon. But I wouldn't want them to change, it wouldn't be Hodges then.<br/>I won't leave it so long before I return.
Janis Godwin Spear
Those 4 magic words: breakfast served all day. And it is a good breakfast. Just too delicious. The hash browns are particularly good - being the proper kind with loose pieces and fried onion. <br/>And what is even better is you can have a set breakfast or make your own from a list of yummy usuals. <br/>The atmosphere is pleasant with several plants in pots and a fountain with running water. Very soothing. <br/>Defiantly worth a visit.
Jasmin Sewdial
Hubby & I had breakfast there yesterday.<br/>Coffee was great as always.<br/><br/>We both had the eggs Benedict.<br/>Firstly the ham was of very poor quality & the so called hollandaise Sauce was mustard sauce.<br/><br/>Not appetizing at all.<br/><br/>Very poor by Hodges's normal standards

Hodges is one of my favourite places for lunch. The staff is very friendly and the food is so good. Open for breakfast and lunch. The carrot cake is my favourite and it goes so nicely with a good cappuccino. You can sit inside and out. Which ever you prefer.
Charmaine
Great little coffee shop! Perfect place to escape from the office. They are always willing to accommodate special requests in terms of food prep as well.
Varushka Padayachi
Really nice vibe and a great place for breakfast. I love the pancakes! They are huge and fluffy. Also very affordable and the coffee is also really good.
Lauren10234
This is an authentic cafe with genuine staff and fantastic service. The food is good and wholesome at very reasonable prices. Also a great place to work, the staff are really accommodating.
Tam Loves Food
This unassuming restaurant is full of surprises. My eggs royale was tasty and well cooked. My partner had the fresh baked chicken pie which was well worth the wait. Excellent breakfast and lunch spot!
Daniel Wiggill
This is my pre blood donation spot. This traditional mom and pop old school coffee shop has been around for years and for good reason.<br/>The food is always good.. Don't expect great service... But great food.<br/>Tip: try the pies... <br/>
Tay
Mmm YUMMY !! Brekkie at Hodges with my sister ♥️ a hearty meal and very hot coffee to start the day !! We shared a chicken mayo tramazini as their meals are a decent size and indulged in their large cappuccino's !! Service is quick and location is prime for a quick bite to eat !!
Jarred Cinman
10 points for effort. These guys are always open and always making an effort to deliver on the promise of good home cooked fare. For vegans, like me, there are often many choices which is to be commended. It is a little cottagey decor-wise, and the food can err on wrong side of rustic, but if you want to take your gran out for lunch, it's the ideal spot.
Melissa Press
Delicious scones , toasted chicken mayo was divine. I've had a breakfast there before too. The restaurant is so clean , excellent service . It's not a Vibey place (I go there with my grandfather) as it's very popular amoungst the elderly. Very well priced, owners always there. Cute homely spot for a hearty meal đź‘Ť
Owen Tennant
Pleasant location for a breakfast , very professional friendly service , food good. Thought I would try out for a Sunday carvery which is elusive to find , was really disappointed, dry and probable barely above being offered in the old age homes around , other offering on the menu I suspect mostly good , but surely easy to knock out a Sunday lunch especially when there is a plenty of support ?
Amit Vanmali
Been going here regularly and really enjoy the food. The place is vegetarian friendly and has got some awesome homemade pies. Try the lemonade
Love.Life.Daley
I have been here many times for breakfast and really enjoy it.. The only thing is the bacon changed somewhere along the line and it's really tasteless!!! The service is good and the food is consistent.
KarmaZebra
An "old faithful", firm favourite of many a Craighall resident. Hodges never disappoints with its freshly home-baked muffins, scones and (my favourite) Christmas mince pies! Washed down with warm "Bean There" Coffee gives all the right warm fuzzy feelings one would expect from a cosy local! Hodges is also owner run & managed and one is always met with the same friendly faces making it feel super homely. Extra points for the large variety of vegetarian and vegan meals too ❤️

Situated in the middle of the Colony Centre, patrons can sit outside watching shoppers and yoga member pass by. The menu is extensive and the waiters are accommodating. I had a cappuccino and the milk was unfortunately burnt.
Kevin Collins
Good breakfast, good lunch and even an early dinner stopping point, but guys the real secret of this place is the amazing Sunday roast lunch. Gosh what a treat with all the trimmings and no dishes - my idea of heaven. <br/>The friendly owner and staff are all fantastic - only down side is early closing on a Monday afternoon.<br/><br/>See you for lunch on Sunday!

Hodges in the Colony in Craighall Park is one of the cornerstones of the neighbourhood. And there are a number of good reasons why. Being someone who works from home, I often feel the need to get out of the house and find somewhere else to work. Being across the road from where I live,  Hodges is always my venue of choice as the food is wholesome and tasty, it’s well priced and the ambience is buzzy yet relaxed enough for me to concentrate.
Kelly Emerton
First things first, their coffee sucks. <br/><br/>Now that that's out of the way I can tell you what they do well. They have a vegan menu thanks to their loyal yogi fans at Living Yoga next door. I've been told everything on this menu is delicious and if you look at my photos, I can certainly see the appeal. I had a hallumi and poached egg breakfast which was delicious. But ironically the star of the show was the side of bread which was to die for. I think a good loaf of bread is incredibly underrated and I'm happy to say Hodges serves excellent bread/toast which accompanied our breakfasts perfectly. I paired my breakfast with a hot chocolate and espresso shot which was lovely. The soy cappuccinos are good too. <br/><br/>I've heard their Sunday roasts are excellent and hope to be trying one soon.

I don't usually frequent The Colony centre on Jan Smuts. Hodges was a cute little find. I was treated to chocolate cake - so delicious. The service was lovely, the food good and the location quiet and conversation friendly. Lovely find.

I really love this restaurant. The owner is very sweet and the waiters and waitresses always remember me. The food is homely and quite affordable and yessss tasty.
Matt
What an absolute find! I truly didn't believe that restaurants like this still existed, certainly not in Johannesburg. Family run, good honest food, smiling service - the sort of place you could happily eat every day. The decor is much like a family restaurant from a decade or so ago, and that's the way it should be. This isn't a trendy place and I hope they never try to be, either with their atmosphere or their menu. <br/><br/>The food was super and a note on the quality - the owner was definitely around checking all was well, and the little tell-tall signs of proper ingredients like Lurpak butter (not cheap stuff) tell you they don't cut corners with the food they serve. <br/><br/>We are already planning our next visit.
Rose
Perfect place to take "Granny" for a Sunday lunch. Excellent service and a great place for breakfasts too. It's a family run business, so expect it to feel a bit more "familiar" than the average place.
Lauren Kim
A family run business with very friendly and efficient staff, well priced tasty food that doesn't disappoint. Free wifi as well :-) No children's play area but a great place for the family!!!
Darryl W
It's a great little local breakfast & lunch venue. The owner must have spent some time in the Mugg & Bean franchise business - he also introduced those monitor sized muffins & his portions are generously sized & always wholesome & tasty. It has a real homely feel to it. The personal touch is strong - a brother and sister team run the place.
Cleo
Nice cosy dinner environment-not too noisy and hectic. Small dinner menu that never varies but it is a good formula. Friendly waiter and owner keen to accommodate. Prices are reasonable and they serve good portions. Mains come with a salad on the side. Vegetarian lasagne was very tasty- albeit the pasta a bit doughy. Good, comfortable dining experience
Meg Dryden
Favourite restaurant in J'burg! Brilliant staff who always make you feel welcome. I remember during winter they made sure we always had blankets when sitting on the patio. The Johnson Chicken roll is a must try!
Mark Schoeman
I wanted to try out Hodges because of the reviews I had read on Zomato - people seem to either love it or hate it. Unfortunately, I left closer to the latter. <br/><br/>Positives: it is clearly an owner-run restaurant which is good, the owners were there helping the waiters and engaging with the customers. I had an eggs benedict which was decent, although there was a strong mustard flavour in the hollandaise sauce which I didn't really enjoy (my personal taste, I guess). <br/><br/>Constructive criticism: the coffee was weak and the cappuccino came with a mountain of stiff foam on top - my worst! For a coffee house, I would expect the staff to be properly trained baristas. Places like Urban Grind in Parkhurst offer great barista training. The service was slow and made worse so by the fact that they appeared to only have a single card machine. Maybe they need to get a few more?
Dido Panagiotopoulos
A friendly hospitable little bistro with really yummy food and a relaxed warm ambience. Donald (host/ manager/owener) looked after us beautifully - catering for me (vegan), Dad (87years old) and my hubby (polar opposite of a vegetarian) - making suggestions, additions or substitutions. We each were extremely well looked after and loved our meals! We loved the simple small menu - meant everything was fresh and made to order (and we weren't overwhelmed by choice). We'll be back!
Kate Parker
I really enjoyed this little gem of a cafe. We stopped in for breakfast on a Sunday and I was very pleasantly surprised. Wonderful service, attentive and friendly waiters and fantastic breakfast dishes! It's often hard to find a good hollandaise sauce and Hodge's has perfected theirs. The scones were also delicious! A wonderful find.
David Wolpert
Super place to eat.<br/>A bit cramped inside but more than made up for by the great food and service.<br/>Sunday roasts and curried chicken are hearty home cooked meals.<br/>Well worth a visit.

Hodges is the ideal "café office". The vibe is chilled, which is perfect for a meeting or to catch up on some work. They are very reasonably priced and their food is extremely tasty. Try their cakes: these are scrumptious!
Joanne Bender
Love this place. Reminds me of my family's restaurant. The food is good and the service is excellent. Excellent coffee as well, from Bean There. Perfect place for a meeting, catching up on work or hanging out with friends.
Kate Els {IndiKate.net}
This is the perfect spot for a casual breakfast or a cup of tea and cake. It's very homey and reminds of a small village coffee shop. The minestrone soup is a great winter dish, while the scones are always fluffy, tasty and served warm.
Jodene Shaer
Hodges is my home away from home, with a family run haven of food and happiness. With wifi, plug points and a meal to suit pretty much everyone, it's a must try. Book for a full Sunday lunch or have the best home made scones in town. Chances are I will see you there :)
Lisa
I feel like if you are going to eat here you need to be at least 70 years old. The customers and decor are right out of the 50s. Service is also so slow you would think the granny customers are your waiters. <br/><br/>I had a toasted bacon and cheese and there was more bacon fat than bacon which was really disappointing. The potato wedges were yummy though and saved the meal for me. <br/><br/>I don't know if I will head back anytime soon though. Very average experience even if it was just for a toasted sandwich.
David Berry
A quaint little local coffee shop. A nice variety of snacks to choose from and good light meals that don't break the bank. Good coffees and treats as well.
Marcelle Radyn
We were there one Tuesday evening for a quick lunch and it was really pleasant. The staff were very friendly and never left us searching for them; granted it was pretty quiet. The setting with the plants and water feature also give it a nice tranquil feel. The hodges sandwich is a must try on your first visit. It is a glorious triple decker with succulent bacon and chicken mayo. Probably not well suited for supper but will definitely go back for lunch.

Hodges is my local and home from home, where I can work for hours without interruption, coffee on tap, and fresh wholesome food to brighten up my day when I need a break from the laptop. I'm surprised to read complaints about service - 99% of the time I have experienced it to be efficient and engaging, which is more than I can say for many trendier places. And speaking of 'trendy' - it is precisely the non-trendiness of Hodge's menu that makes it so refreshing. Master Chef cloned cuisine, gourmet steak houses, wannabe Italian trattorias are a dime a dozen, but Hodges has an eclectic menu that makes it unique. Yes, there are some old-fashioned items like pies and scones, but MAN they are so comforting to come back to between other culinary adventures! Thank you Hodges
Natalie Katz
This restaurant really does not tickle my fancy. They décor is out-dated, the service is slow, the food is bland and the youngest customer is 70 something. <br/><br/>I ordered the chicken liver salad, the livers and roast vegetables were raw and by the time they had given me the “properly cooked” salad everyone else at the table had finished eating, so it was a completely hit and miss experience. <br/><br/>However, I have heard that they serve lovely breakfasts.

Things I love about Hodges : the vegan options available - including soy milk and smoothies, the cat themed decor (and name - Hodge was a famous British cat), the lovely open-air lifestyle shopping centre The Colony that it is in (which was once Hyde Park Hotel), and the friendly family-run atmosphere. Definitely try it - you'll become a regular!
Martini
Good solid home cooking fare at very reasonable prices. Wine prices also very reasonable but very limited.<br/>I find the food a bit bland sometimes . Particularly the pies.<br/>I went there today and had the grilled kasler ribs. They were delicious. <br/>Has a very strong following by the 'older set'<br/>Service can be a bit slow at times but today was very good.<br/>Lovely to sit outside in summer.
Chloe
My absolute favourite breakfast spot in Joburg! There is an amazing variety of just about every breakfast item you could wish for, and they don't disappoint. Portions are of a good size (unlike many other places, you get what you pay for), and the food quality is top notch. Very warm and homey environment, with most of the customers appearing to be regulars; and perfect for a cup of coffee and a muffin on a rainy day, or for the ultimate hangover breakfast. Rumour has it they also do one if the best Sunday roasts around!
Julie
Hodges is a neighbourhood staple. The decor is traditional and quite conservative. Clientele tend to be older people. It's usually very busy but I reckon it would do even better with a decor revamp. There are lots of simple but tasty meals on offer, and they have a good selection of very large muffins to have with your coffee :)<br/><br/>One of the best things about Hodges is the free WiFi. I also like that it's next door to a bookshop and downstairs from the Chinese massage ladies, so there are always options for before and after.
Bdutoit
One of my fave retreat from the madd(en)ing crowd places in northern Jozi. The ambiance is most conducive to getting unwound a little, ably helped by the menu, and the delivery thereof.
Kamlan Moodley
I am lucky enough to work opposite Hodges and I love their food. From the home made pies to the delectable breakfasts and scones, Hodges ticks all the right boxes. The ingredients are of the highest quality and it seems each meal is prepared to order so you always get a freshly prepared plate. The staff are attentive without being overbearing and I have never had bad service. As long as Hodges maintains the high standards, I will be a loyal customer!!!
Glynn Allen
Best home made pies in Jozi. Great vibe here and never have a bad meal.
Wayne Sussman
Joburg's best kept breakfast secret. The premier place for breakfast in Gauteng. Looks can be deceiving but tastes are not. Great service to match up this versatile menu
Jacqueline Lues
Hodges is a cute coffee shop in The Colony Arms shopping center that serves breakfasts, light meals, and the yummiest scones. They love their vegetarians, and offer a good range of choices. I enjoy 'Al's burger' - with its homemade vegetarian patty, and a side serving of grilled potato wedges. Their 'Tofu salad' is also recommended, and is made with grilled marinated tofu and fresh sprouts. As mentioned their scones are a must-have (yes, they are noted as 'legendary' on the menu!). The venue has a lovely vibe - very warm and welcoming.
