Review The Hussar Grill Morningside - Sandton

Ruben Hernandez
Very nice quality for value for lunch menu. You get a starter or dessert + main at a competitive price. After ordering your food, you get an apperitive until food arrives, which is something you usually do not get for lunch menu. Personnel charming and effective.

Great and fast service without feeling rushed. Tuesday date night special is the best value for money. I had the steak, which was perfectly cooked and delicious! 100% recommended!
Daniel Martin
The only place that’ll make you say “Huzza” after eating their food! Their date night special is going to give you bang for your buck. You get to choose two of the three options between starters, mains and dessert. Their portions are generous and if you want to make it a little extra romantic I recommend sharing starters and dessert between the two of you. Their portions are generous and they’ll still bring you olives and chips (worth a visit all on their own). Service is phenomenal and the food matches. Highly recommended. I suggest booking in advance.

Perfect all round experience. They have an amazing semi white. Springbok carpaccio for Starters - amazing. Steak 9/10. Desert... death by chocolate. Need I say more. And coffee to round it all off. Amazing service Amazing eve all round

Great service, good vibes, yummy starters, and mouthwatering steaks done to perfection. Topped off with a Chocolate vodka martini. Sweet ending to an exceptional dinner. Yes, I'd visit again 😊

If you enjoy a good steak, excellent service this is the place. Extensive selection of good red and white wines Conveniently located near a number of boutique hotels , guest houses and B&B in the area. Never disappoints. Prices have increased in the last 6 weeks, bit do offer some great specials for a couples dinner during the week which is excellent value.

Lovely place for a date night or a business dinner or lunch. Service was good with top quality food. Prices are a bit on the high side but I suppose you get what you pay for.

They had a very affordable lunch special which got us through the doors. 130rand for appetizer and main. They were also very kind. The peppercorn sauce didn’t taste good and they took it off the bill and gave us dessert to make up for it. They went above and beyond to take care of us and we really appreciated the customer service. Thank you guys! The ambiance is also very nice.

The meat was really tasty and also the potatoes. The waitress was really helpful when asking about how meals are prepared and if they had flour or not. The only cons is that was too dark to see the food.
Jim Paterson
The Hussar Grill really delivers top quality steak, and if you enjoy extra strong flavours, the blue cheese sauce is deliciously potent. There are plenty of other enticing options, and a great ambience. I will always have good memories of this spot!!

Good food and decent service. When loadshedding happened a high pitched alarm ran for about 20 minutes which was horrific.
Grant Nader
Generally very good service and reliable food. But I had creme Brule today which was very clearly made with sweetened condensed milk and I definitely would no recommend this to anyone.
Dineo S
Excellent food! Lovely atmosphere and good service. But... we were disturbed by rubbish bins rolling in and out.
Magda Rautenbach
We visited the Hussers Grill in Morningside and was not disappointed. The service was excellent and my pepper fillet was very soft and tasty. The cappacino was good and the free chocolate liqueur was to die for. The only reason I gave Hussars four stars, was that the special - the Brazilian steak-was a bit tough.

Awesome staff, food and service.

I had the T-bone, it wasn't the best steak I've had, certainly not their best. I would give an overall average rating for the food. The service was great and the wine selection is good.

Leaving Hussar Grill now very satisfied. Excellent service with very good food. I will recommend any day of the week! Best steak in town hands down! If you get here ask for Joe best waiter ever!

My husband and I went to the Hussar grill in Morningside for dinner last night and what a shocking experience it turned out to be. I ordered the calamari starter and he ordered the prawn cocktail. The calamari arrived in a tiny round bowl with no garnish . There was nothing visually appealing about the dish. It smelt very fishy and ended up being raw and rubbery to the point where I literally could not swallow it. We sent it back and started on his prawn cocktail. We both popped a prawn into our mouths at the same time.... And then froze. The prawns were so off that they fized in our mouths. They had this awful mushy consistency. I was not sure weather to spit or swallow. Thank goodness I spat. My husband was up all night violently I'll. We called the manager who refused to taste the prawns in front of us. He said he would taste them in the kitchen. He later returned saying ...... and i quote.....'they were not ok'. He offered us something else but we declined. He took my name and number and said someone would contact me today but I have not been contacted by anyone. The manager didn't charge us for our wine and apologised. Just before we left I went to the ladies room which was located at the back of the store. I passed a table of waitresses slouched in chairs in uniform sharing a huge plate of chocolate cake. The ladies toilet was filthy. There was absolutely no music playing in the restaurant and it has zero ambience. Off seafood can land a person in hospital. Just a word of warning. I do not recommend this restaurant!

An absolutely stunning branch of The Hussar Grill franchise! Their mussels are so fresh and burst with flavour, the steaks are cooked to perfection and the service is on point. Management is completely hands on and aware of every aspect of the restaurant. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking to have a scrumptious meal in a great atmosphere!

I had my birthday lunch at Hussar Grill yesterday. My food was good, the service very good and I was pleased to receive a bottle of wine as a birthday gift. Can recommend.
Craig Riviere
Also took a friend to dinner because we previously tried the Cape Town branch in Green Point which was amazing. I have to say the Morningside food was excellent and service was great. Even received a complimentary dessert cocktail each. Perhaps it was a quieter night and everyone else was in Cape Town. I thoroughly enjoyed the food and experience as I had in Cape Town.
Coral Samuelsz
I always enjoy the vibe here, chilled and laid back just having great conversations with friends and family. The food is already great and the service wonderful
Yaniv Kleitman
There's a speciality steak there, think it's the Madagascar Pepper fillet or something like that. It's like liquid, absolutely best fillet in town
Pride Rumbie Gwaze
Tender melt in your mouth fillet steak, simply delicious. I will be coming back for more. The chips were also just as good, not fatty. The only issue I had was that the waiters weren't really attentive yet there was only like 6 people during lunch, other than that, the food was amazing!!!
Jani Du Toit
Went to The Grove branch in Pta on 6 May for my birthday with my husband. We both had the fillet and Creme Brulee! Was the best we ever had! Pleasantly surprised with the awesome food and great service! Will highly recommend you guys any day!!!
Misha Van Tonder
I loved it here. The food was amazing and we had such a nice waiter Mike. Will definitely be back again. Thank you for the complementary bottle of wine and voucher.
Buhle Flawa Mabaso
Service was on point the lamb that I are was soft and ripped cannot complain thank you so much

Had a wonderful lunch at The Hussar Grill and ordered the filet on the bone, my friend had the kingklip and it was equally flavourful. The Greek salad was fresh and the chocolate fondant cake was fantastic. There was also a homemade ice cream, kind of like a nougat but I forgot to ask what flavour it was - very unusual and delicious. There is a lovely selection of wines and the staff was warm and polite.

WE WERE 2 COUPLES AND ARRIVED FOR LUNCH AT ABOUT 1PM. FRIENDLY GREETING AND SEATED OUTSIDE. QUITE SOME TIME AFTER ORDERING THE WAITRESS RETURNED TO SAY THAT THEY HAD RUN OUT OF PORK RIBS. WE THEN DISCOVERED THAT MOST OF THE CHICKEN DISHES WERE NOT AVAILABLE. 3 OF US ORDERED STEAK AND I HAD TO SETTLE FOR A CAESAR SALAD  AS I HAVE TO LIMIT RED MEAT INTAKE. AT THE NEXT TABLE A COUPLE ARRIVED ABOUT 20 MINUTES AFTER US. WE NOTICED THAT THEY HAD RECEIVED THEIR MEALS WHILE WE WERE STILL WAITING. HAVING ASKED ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS ABOUT OUR FOOD IT FINALLY ARRIVED AFTER THE COUPLE AT THE NEXT WERE GETTING READY TO LEAVE. I GUESS THAT WE WAITED NEARLY AN HOUR . WHEN THE FOOD ARRIVED THE WAITRESS MUDDLED UP THE STEAKS. ONE ORDER WAS FOR FILLET MADEGASCAR MEDIUM TO WELL DONE AND ONE FOR THE CARPETBAGGER RARE. WITH THE SAUCES ON THE STEAKS THEY LOOKED SIMILAR BUT THE WAITRESS SHOULD HAVE KNOWN WHICH WAS WHICH.  ONLY AFTER STARTING TO EAT THE STEAK WAS THE ERROR DISCOVERED AND WE HAD TO SWOP STEAKS AROUND. (WITH BITES MISSING)  THE FOOD WAS ALRIGHT BUT NOT GREAT . AFTER WE HAD PAID WE WERE APPROACHE BY A COUPLE ON HOLIDAY FROM KZN WHO TOLD US THAT THEY HAD GIVEN UP WAITING AND WERE WALKING OUT. SO IT WASN'T JUST OUR PARTY. CONCLUSION, SURROUNDINGS NICE, FOOD OK SERVICE SHOCKING . A DISAPPOINTING EXPERIENCE.

Draft beers stale or faulty, ostrich cooked on too cool a grill, bland chateaubriand, packing up around us at 20:30: dismal experience all round. Manager didn’t seem bothered. First time here I had a fantastic meal, last three times have been average to bad.
Grant Nader
Went there for a steak dinner. The service was friendly and the decor is inviting. I had the rump which was unfortunately overcooked. My wife had 2 starters... The black mushroom and the chicken livers. The mushroom was fairly bland, small and had a bit much cheese. The livers were very tasty.<br/><br/>Overall a little disappointing but still enjoyable.
Leone Boshoff
We’ve been here twice and the food and service has always been great - made us feel so at home and we will definitely go back! I find the prices very reasonable compared to restaurants in the area or those with similar quality/types of food. I also saw on the menu that they don’t charge corkage, which I think is a great idea and gesture (haven’t tried it yet).<br/>The only room for improvement I can think of is the lighting (for better ambience).
Makgalake
Having frequented the Hussar in Durban, I was a little disappointed with the Morningside branch. My steak was not prepared to my liking, the service was below average and the decor is also just average.
Kevin Letord
Once again another wonderful meal at this specific outlet. Restaurant was full and the service was still great. Kitchen obviously well organised as you did not wait long for you food to get to the table.<br/><br/>I had the T bone steak and it was wonderful.<br/>Good wine selection as well.<br/><br/>I don't think that you can go wrong by going to any of the Hussar Grills as I have never had a bad meal at any of them.<br/>I think that this restaurant is way better than The Butcher Shop, The Grill House or Wombles for that matter.
Louise
The consistency of the Hussar is indeed something to discuss whether it is the hussar in tokai or morningside the service and food is consistent as I told my friend I was with the Hussar is now private school spur so it’s expected having said that I was little disappointed I wanted a medium blue cheese steak and got a very well done steak but I will probably be back
Bev
We tried the Hussar Grill Morningside this evening. Pros and cons left me feeling somewhat divided. Cons: they were not busy yet we waited 40 minutes for our food. We had to enquire where it was, which always leaves one feeling a little upset. The rump was medium and not medium rare. The mash was lumpy and sloppy. The ice cream and chocolate sauce - described on the board as “decadent” - was awful and we had to send it back. Watery yellow ice cream with this squirt of worm-like, grainy, chocolate stuff untidily drizzled over. I am certain it came out of a bottle and it had that mass manufactured, artificial taste. Definitely not decadent. Just no pride at all in its presentation or the quality of the ingredients. Service was also lacking but started off well. Finally the bill took an age and we had to ask twice for it. <br/>Pros: sirloin was perfect and very tasty, onion rings were crisp and delicious, butternut and spinach excellent. The manager was very pleasant and really apologised profusely for the ice cream but I told him I’m not sure he has the power to change that in a franchised restaurant. He said he valued my feedback and would definitely take it back to head office. He then presented us with chocolate vodka martinis which were indeed decadent. Thank you. A mature manager who took the constructive criticism well.

Conveniently located in the Morningside shopping centre, however the food was disappointing. Maybe we just had a bad night, but the steaks were underwhelming and the chicken dish equally so. I won't write off the Hussar Grill yet as it could have just been the day and as such I am willing to give it another chance as it has all the ingredients for a good grill house.
Camillefredericks
Steaks was good and the service just freaking awesome! Very welcoming staff, no waiters ignoring you (even if you’re not their table) and everyone just wanting to ensure their patrons have a good experience.
Elle Mbadaliga
They make great steaks. It was great seeing the meat board and choosing cuts from there. That offered snacks while we wait for our food. I can't fault anything. The staff was friendly and checked up on us often. Keep up the good work

We hit this restaurant at the popular Morningside Centre on a Friday night. This was our second visit. Unfortunately we ran into trouble quite early when our waitress seemed to forget we were there.<br/><br/>After waiting more than half an hour for our food (we skipped entres and ordered mains) we collared the hostess to ask what had happened to our order. We were told it would be out directly. This turned out to not be the case. After enquiring again, we were told five minutes. Five minutes turned into ten minutes. Given that we ordered very simple items (steak and sauces with salad or fries on the side) the suspicion crept in that our order had somehow slipped through the cracks. After a very long 45 minute wait our order appeared. But wait... there's more! <br/><br/>The steaks duly arrived but not the sauces. So now we have steaks and sides but no sauces. Do we eat the steaks? Do we wait? Tough call! In the end, we waited... 5 minutes later our sauces arrive but wait, there's more! Only two sauces arrive, the third is missing.... and it's mine! <br/><br/>Having long ago crossed the line to blurred vision and an irregular heartbeat from lack of food I tuck in to my steak, sans sauce. Finally, my sauce arrives but by then I had consumed half my 200g sirloin (medium) so I use the excellent Madagascan Pepper sauce to dunk my chips in. I demand (and receive) an extra order of fries. But I feel this is not enough compensation for pain and suffering, so I complain and management responds with a free bottle of their house wine and some complimentary chocolate vodka shots. <br/><br/>Which did help a great deal to take the edge off. However the mellow vibe is somewhat soured when we receive the bill only to find that an extra item has been added to our bill. Here's some free advice, HG: when you're in a hole - stop digging!<br/><br/>So apart from that unfortunate series of events, how was the food? My steak was excellent, with a generous bit of fat on it. The fries were crispy, golden and hot - perfect. The Madagascan pepper sauce was excellent. If all had arrived at once it would have been a resounding success but alas...<br/><br/>My wife and daughter each had a 200g rump with a side salad and a blue cheese sauce. My daughter's was a bit on the tough side, not good when she'd ordered it medium rare. Both liked the blue cheese sauce very much (granted by the time it arrived we were near fainting with hunger) but the salad they felt was a tad skimpy and bland and lacked niceties like feta and or olives.<br/><br/>We then decided to have some dessert and shared a baked cheesecake, which was excellent. All in all the food quality at this restaurant is still good but the service is somewhat lacking. The jury is still out as to whether we will be back. Good food, poor service. Given that the prices are quite steep I feel you really need both!

Probably one of the best steak places that I have been to in Sandton. Excellent atmosphere. The only reason why I have not given this place 5 stars is that I ordered my steak medium rare and it was done more like medium. So I would recommend emphasizing how you like your steak done if you choose to dine here.
Leigh Livanos
Service slow and food average. For a meat restaurant to serve medium steak with blood on the plate was disappointing. Desert was bland. Overall not as expected.
Sybrand Lintvelt
Wow what a great vibe, great taste and a great feel. The food is delicious the drinks are good. With good company this is a great place to be. Food made as ordered, fresh homemade desert and great coffee.
Brando Santario
The Porktasrophe!, the starterbeef marrow bone lacked essential flavor to cut through the pungent and extremely one toned marrow, the pork belly lacked the essential crisp crackling ( sacrilegious) to elevate this dish into the required realm of deliciousness, the raisen sauce was anything but complementary to the dish! At least the boschendaal as always was a welcomed friend!

Okay, just to begin with, I went to the Hussar Grill at Monte Casino, but I couldn't find it on Zomato, so I hope it's the same franchise. <br/><br/>I was there on a date with my girlfriend, but I got there before her, a full hour to be exact. As I sat there waiting for her to arrive, I had a good conversation with one of the waiters. It wasn't even the waiter serving me and I was impressed by how we had so much in common. I liked the fact that they have employees who want to get to know their customers rather than just serve them. The drinks service was good, and I was also using the restaurants WiFi. My girlfriend eventually arrived and we decided to have dessert (Chocolate fondant) because our movie was screening in 45 minutes. Wow wow wow. The presentation, the execution, I couldn't fault it. And the taste was just heavenly. <br/><br/>Also the restaurant layout is classy, and welcoming. It's a fine dining experience that I recommend for all. I'm definitely going back

This is a really good steak restaurant chain. However, the one in Cape Town is quite a lot better. The steak here, although really good, was not the best steak ever (that would be in The Hussar Grill in Rondebosch). The service was really good. I really like the fact that you can bring your own wine and they don't charge corkage.

We were there for a business meal. It is a fancy restaurant with a nice food. I have tried new york steak and it was above avarage. There is wide list of wine.
Caitlin Ross
service felt a bit awkward but the steaks were cooked to perfection, sides were delicious and the atmosphere was just awesome! would definitely come again 😍👍🏻
Mmuller.gphsa
The service is shocking, sent all three steaks back as they were disgusting, tough raw and tasteless. I ended up ordering pizza from Pomodoro next door. So disappointed. Thankfully The Grillhouse is nice a close

Went for lunch to Hussar Grill earlier this week. Really had a great time! The Fried Crumbed Camembert starter was delicious and my favourite, as was the Cured Springbok Loin Carpaccio - definitely would try both again. I order the Grilled Lamb Cutlets main, portion size was fair and the lamb tasty. We also enjoyed the Chocolate Vodka Martinis for dessert. Those who had tried the steaks rated the food well! All round good time.
Ender Karan
I have been here a few times already and they can't cook meat as you want. It is always overcooked. Meat itself is not tasty too; I believe it is about meat suppliers.
Dean
For an up market steak house, the rump is below average. The cut of rump was a split piece of tough meat. Previous visits were really good which is disappointing.<br/><br/>Updates comment.<br/>Went back to Hassar Morningside and I can only update my review to amazing. Complete turn around from our previous visit. Well done guys.

Had the most tender and delicious lamb shank I've ever had in my whole life at this restaurant! Our waiter ,Joe, had such in depth and insightful knowledge of the different wines available and was really pleasant. Your variety of steaks was also great. I was celebrating my fiance's birthday and your staff was really accommodating, efficient and very welcoming. Everybody at the table had great reviews from their particular steaks and ribs. And the free bottle of wine after the dinner was a great surprise. I will definitely make Hussar Grill a family steakhouse staple.
Mayuri
The sweet potato chips and olives served as a complimentary welcome snack were quite nice. I had the Parmesan chicken breasts, it was average. Very generous portion (2 breasts); enough for a doggy bag as well. The chateau briand steak was divine. The speciality ice cream was not ice enough, so it melted quite quickly -the waiter did however warn us about this. It was good, the chocolate sauce was quite nice.
Abigail Keene
Average and overpriced. Mussels were questionable, Calamari was cold and borderline inedible from the chili (not mentioned on the menu). Pork belly was uninspired. Unremarkable service and will not be back.
Gerald Jacob
Order a take away from you tonight. I am not sure when a Fillet on the Bone, doesn't have the bone??? Really disappointing, seeing that your restaurant had like maximum 10 customers. Your staff didn't seem the least bothered. Your phone lines are bad, maybe that could be the problem when ordering on the phone with Akim. Salad at least was fresh and good
Geoff Simmons
Ok place, quite costly for what you actually get on your plate although I was lucky to have extra on my plate.....a slug came crawling out of my salad.<br/>Thanks but not necessary. My stomach and taste buds switched off after that to be honest.
Jenevieve Fabre
Outstanding service. They really do make it a wonderful evening. Good is too notch. And wine selections are good. It's definitely a place for special occasions as it is a bit pricey, but definitely worth it for the quality of the evening.
Abs
Pleasantly surprised not sure why it took me so long to try The Hussar Grill . <br/>By far the best Lamb Shank I have tasted in while , with the chili it was just perfect .<br/>My friend enjoyed the Rib Eye as well . I will sure be back to try their steaks . <br/>Service was good , lovely and inviting set up..<br/>Booking process on Zomato was efficient.
Anne Welensky (TonyDaPony)
Great food, all meat came perfectly cooked and as ordered. Slight improvements on the service could be made as one starter came slightly different than that was ordered and a sauce incorrect on the main, but the amazing chocolate fondant made up for any inconvenience. Overall would definitely visit again 👍
Namritha Sivsanker
Best fillet of beef I have had! Superb medium well steak and pepper sauce<br/>Warm decor and setting.<br/>The creme brulee was perfect dessert to end a beautiful dinner

12.04.2017 For the first time I used the Zomato booking option and I honestly wish more restaurants would do it. So easy and you can modify etc. So my colleagues and I went for dinner here as we wanted something near the office. I'm a meatlover so you don't need to ask me twice to go to a steakhouse. Our waiter showed us all the different cuts of meat available and the rib eye wasn't available as it wasnt fully aged as yet. <br/><br/>We were warmly greeted by the staff on arrival. Loved the olives and potato chips on the table to snack on. <br/><br/>I didnt order starters but tasted the boerewors our guests had and it was really nice cooked in a sauce. The Bitterballen I found nice, crunchy on the outside but a bit too mushy on the inside the texture was too smooth. I think a warning label also needs to come with the mustard... damn it packs a punch if you not careful. <br/> <br/>I've had fillet on the bone before and loved it so this was my option with Pepper sauce and Onion rings. The rest all ordered various items. On arrival I took one cut of the steak and it was red inside. Yes I'm one of those that orders fillet well done so I had to send it back. When management came to see what the problem was it turned out my colleague on the other end also sent her steak back for being overcooked. So basically they gave us one another's steak. They were so apologetic about the mix up they even offered to replace my sauce and onion rings (extremely crunchy) which I was happily still nibbling on. In the end they insisted and brought a fresh batch. The way in which they all handled this will definitely bring me back here. I do however feel the 300g fillet was slightly small compared to one I've had elsewhere. But on my steaks return it was really amazing. <br/><br/>The team decided they wanted dessert. I thought I'd be adventurous and try the Hussar Grill Ice cream. Honestly I am going to be blatanty honest. What were you thinking? The combination of items sounds great. Ice cream, honeycomb, brittle, peanuts, marshmallows and chocolate. The nuts are so bitter that it kills the entire taste of the dessert and overpowers it. The marshmallow becomes slimy and I couldn't taste any honeycomb. <br/><br/>Another colleague had the chocolate fondant and was disappointed that there was no gooey chocolate oozing out. <br/><br/>Regardless they are still getting a high score for amazing service... a great steak ( round 2 ) and delicious wine options. The judges are still pending a decision on dessert 😉

I came here with my partner for our 10th year anniversary. I had a fillet on the bone for the 1st time it was lovely. The dessert was the highlight of the evening. Hand selected truffles.

Tonight was our 10 year anniversary. We LOVE The Hussar Grill's in Cape Town, with Moullie Point being the favorite. Never been to one in Jozi. But...imagine my sheer delight to find one just in time for such a celebration. I booked on Friday..knowing how popular all the Cape one's are. We didn't need to book. I did say it was a 10 year anniversary. I was a little deflated when they didn't make a bit of a fuss..but that is ok. We had the Bitterballen, as always. A little under done inside and too crispy outside..cool the oil a little. Had to ask for more mustard options, as am used to the smorgasbord of mustards you get in the Cape. I had the rump with pepper sauce and veg and chips, which did not dissapoint. My wife had the filled on the bone...ordered medium, but it came rare. After some more cooking, she was still not delighted...but she did admit that is was just something new she would not order again. We finished off with the truffles- OMG, the highlight of the meal. It was a great evening, but we did feel like we were at the mall version of the real thing. Perhaps we will try Pretoria next. Still a lovely celebration.

Had dinner here just over a week ago with the family. We had a great experience and our waiter provided us with great service. For starters we had cured springbok loin carpiccio which was really good. For mains we ordered lamb shank (this just needed more salt, it was good just portion size was too big) , blue cheese sirloins (this is good and the sauce was nice as well), hollandse biefstuk ( the flavour was good). For dessert we ordered creme brulee ( this was good but not great) and husslar grill icecream dessert ( its just icecream with a mixture of honeycomb, peanut brittle , marshmallow and nougat) this was nice although it lacked a bit flavour and the icecream wasnt very creamy just felt like it was normal vanilla icecream where the ingredients were mixed together. Overall we had a good experience and the service was really good.
Jonathan Abrams
Awful experience. I ordered a medium sirloin which arrived well done and was sent back. The second attempt arrived completely rare so it was also sent back. Bizarre that a steak house can't cook a steak... service and management to match.
Tanya Chirimuta
One of the best wine lists I've seen and absolutely incredible service in a very intimate atmosphere. I ordered the lamb shank, cooked in red wine and served on mash. Great meal but could have had a lot more flavour.
Saiyuri
We first encountered Hussar Grill in stellenbosch and were very excited to hear this steakhouse had made its way to Joburg! It is a traditional steakhouse with a warm cozy atmosphere and the huge drawcard for me is that they don't ever charge you for corkage! So take along your favourite bottle of wine :) a platter of biltong, sweet potato chips and olives is served as you look through their extensive menu. Service was fantastic, we were well attended to from the minute we walked in. We started off with a mussel pot and for mains hubby had steak and I had a springbok steak which was well cooked and full of flavour! Definitely recommended!
Tom Kinstler
Ordered a rare steak. Received a medium steak. This has happened twice now. Didn't feel like fighting over it. Charged an extra R25 for a roast vegetables that came in a bowl smaller than my hand. Partner ordered the calamari this was the most ridiculous joke I've ever seen. The calamari was ordered grilled, it arrived fried. When we asked the waiter said that's how the calamari comes. After tasting it, it made sense. This was typical I&J box calamari served at such a "high end" restuarant. Simply unacceptable
James Barrow
Visited Hussar Grill for a client dinner and was not disappointed. There were nibbles for the table, including biltong, olives and I think onion rings... better than a buttered bread roll anyday! To start I had the large black mushrooms with spinach and feta, which were delicious, but the real star of the show was the 300g Fillet Moutarde cooked to perfection and the sauce delicious. Best steak I've had all year! I tried the Hussar Grill Ice Cream Dessert which was nice but I had a bit of food envy over the other desserts including my favourite - Creme Brulee. Hussar Grill is a bit pricey but the food is worth it.
Ryno.pepler
Great service and food. Absolutely nothing to complain about. Will definitely be returning for the amazing carpetbagger. The chocolate vodka martini is a must!!

On a regular basis when living in Cape Town I had both lunches and evening meals at the Hussar Grill in Rondebosch which has existed there for at least 25 years. This is an edited review of my previous one done in December 2016 which scored a 4. I am going to keep it short and sweet. Ordered 200gram fillet for my partner and a 300gram fillet for myself both medium rare. Partners fine mine way underdone, which I left cut open for the cook to see. I then get offered the same steak back re-cooked and looking somewhat cremated. This to me is an insult to good food and the first time ever this has happened to me in a supposedly renowned establishment. Obviously Hussar is now off our list and also a sad lack of proper management was also apparent. Offered a peace offering of a bottle of housewine, but the damage was already done.
Lwandile Simelane
I had no complaints regarding the service. I had a simple burger, which was dry didn't know I had to order a side sauce to get sauce in my burger. Beer was cold and from the tap then ended off with a Hussar Grill Ice Cream dessert which I enjoyed.
Sharp Ou
Game steak came ridiculously rare when I ordered it medium. Onion rings were soft and so were the chips. Roasted vegetables were a bowl of peppers. Dessert was something you'd get at Milky Lane vs what's written on the menu. Rather go to The Grillhouse instead.
Sharima Bramannan
When your chocolate fondant doesn't ooze out chocolate'y goodness, you know the review ain't gonna be good :-(<br/>I had the blue cheese sirloin for mains...ordered it medium...the blue cheese sauce was good but the sirloin was too chewy. The other dessert we shared was hussar grill ice dessert...vanilla ice cream, peanut brittle, marshmallow, nougat, honeycomb & sprinkle nuts...it was the best part of our meal! <br/>
Vernie
Kak service and the manager a real doos. Hasn't got a clue when it comes to customer liaison. Never go there again.....so dissatisfied and had to ask for our food no less than 3 times
Ndaba Ndlovu
Good food. Well cooked tender steak. Good atmosphere and great service. I had the fillet bearnaise. Tasted great. The cheese cake is also a classic
Lisa Pi
Intimate restaurant, with a bit of New York steakhouse influence. <br/>We were merrily greeted by the managers, and our waiter, Happy. Service was very very good. <br/>Their wine selection is excellent, a bit of variety for every pallet. <br/>Their springbok carpaccio is to die for, beautifully smoked, and just enough rocket and Parmesan cheese. I had the mussel pot, it was average, nothing special. My husband and a friend has the blue cheese sirloin. It was cooked to their preference, and tastes yum!
Tazyn Fini
Delicious, delicious, delicious - the steak was so tender and soft , it melts in your mouth like butter! The service was also great. Would recommend this place to meat lovers!

If I was a betting man, I would have slipped in a pun about steaks being high. This is a grillhouse after all.<br/>But I am neither male nor betting, so I will just say something along the lines of: This is the best steak I have had in years. Seriously... go for the Fillet Béarnaise. Do. It. Now.

So Jozitown has its first Hussargrill and we couldn't be happier.<br/>Have been to this little gem in Cape Town before and is firstly an establishment that fits in with the local history having been a stronghold in Rondebosch for many many years and then branching out with branches all over Western Cape and even a few in Africa.<br/>The feel is very smokeroom meets old-school Grillhouse and perfect for a mafia meeting or as I'm told is quite the meeting spot for diplomats and politicians etc so pretty much the same kind of thing- nice down-lighting, dark walls , maroons and bottles and paraphernalia that suit the mood. Bit of a New York booth restaurant vibe.<br/>There is a bar that is quite cosy of you want to catch an after-work drink or if you're waiting for a table and of course the meat display case which has some of the meat bounty on display so you can see what's in store for you.<br/><br/>The manager Graham was very welcoming and showed us to table- even offered brief history of place and we had a chat later in evening when it quietened down.<br/><br/>The service was good, the waitrons introduce themselves and know the menu and service was mostly perfect bar a few niggles.<br/><br/>Wine list nice and extensive - many options to suit different palates and for the thrifty to the bigger wallets. We opted for the Vergelegen Cab Merlot; was exceptional.<br/><br/>So being a Grillhouse it specializes in meat, but there are a few vegetarian options and some pretty good seafood options- Graham mentioned he is from Cape Town and has passed on his seafood knowledge to the Joburg lads and said their calamari and linefish dishes are great.<br/>The meat covers the full spectrum from various cuts of steak to on-the-bone steaks to ribs and the 'gourmet' meat section where you'll find the old-school classics like the carpetbagger and Château briande, game meats as well as the lamb dishes and the heartier stuff like lamb shanks etc.<br/><br/>A nice touch is they offer a bowl of biltong and olives to start- something new for me.<br/><br/>We started with the Bitterballen which were lovely almost croquette type balls filled with mat and other ingredients and are deep-fried and served with a strong mustard. Absolutely delicious. We also had the snails with butter, garlic and Parmesan - the snails were small but very tender and feel the dish doesn't need the Parmesan it was grilled too long and didn't add much flavour.<br/><br/>One thing that irked me was the waitress offered the specials and said the game that evening was ostrich and something else and the rib-eye, I had heard that the rib-eye was excellent so we ordered that and the lamb shank- only to come back and say the rib-eye was sold out. <br/><br/>So we opted for the lamb shank on mash with rich gravy and the rump with various sides.<br/>The rump and shank arrived but the sides took a while to get to table so we carried on and they eventually came - waitress apologized profusely but was irritating. <br/>The lamb shank was a nice size and melt in your mouth. Mash was lovely and the sauce good and hearty.<br/>The rump was very tender and cooked well but could've had a bit more seasoning- they offer basting etc but we don't do the saucy stuff.<br/>We had sides of onion rings and mash and the mixed veg, which were nice but mainly peppers so wasn't as mixed as one would hope.<br/><br/>We kept a bit to take home and we decided to share a dessert and settled on the old classic Creme Brûlée with proper vanilla ice cream- nice crack to the burnt sugar and the ice cream was great and the Creme was good but not as smooth as it could be. But overall still demolished it.<br/><br/>We had a lovely time and will go back to get the elusive rib-eye or some of the ribs which looked amazing. <br/><br/>Top night.

What an enjoyable Tuesday evening spent at this little steakhouse with over fifty years experience in all things beef! <br/><br/>On this first visit, I stuck to a glass of merlot and started with their Hussar beef biltong which was quoted on the menu as being "damn spectacular biltong since 1964" - average. Very average biltong in a rather small portion that tasted cold enough to have been de-frosted recently. <br/>However, for my main, I selected one of their House Specialties, the Hussar Carpetbagger: fillet mignon medium rare stuffed with a combination of smoked oysters, cheddar cheese and topped with a brandy and wholegrain mustard which was DELICIOUS! Actually, a meal that I would return for again and again. <br/>My dessert selection was creme brûlée. The caramelised topping was just too thick for me to break through it and took some effort and fighting with the dish, so if they could get that right the rest (the custard) of it was delicious.  <br/><br/>*Recommendation: The main dish and service received by Graham's team was enough to get them a four out of five. However, the biltong starter and creme brûlée let the side down. Still, a great evening and I would return!

I wasn't in awe of this place. I noticed other tables received complimentary olives and vegetable crisps on arrival, however we didn't. The service was severely lacking; it was as if our waitress was scared to do her job: we had to ask for her to come serve us a few times. To be honest, we largely felt forgotten. The ambience wasn't great, the tables and chairs are cramped inside, and the lighting was bright. <br/><br/>My steak was very good, not amazing. My boyfriend's lamb shank was incredibly small and we asked for a new one, which was promptly delivered & better (at R190 you'd expect something if substance). The chocolate fondant was delicious, however the truffle selection left much to be desired: 3 of the chocolates were the same (hardly a selection) and tasted as if they'd come from a box of chocolates & not made in the kitchen. The other 2 'truffles' were awful coconut sweets with a bit of chocolate around them: they were so hard I couldn't even take a bite out of one. R50 for 5 small chocolates seemed ludicrous, especially because there was no variety and we only ate 3 because 2 were inedible. <br/><br/>We love the Cape Town franchises and so we were excited to try the Joburg version: I was disappointed and certainly wouldn't rush back in a hurry.

With classy decor, an amazing atmosphere and absolutely pleasant as well as efficient staff, Hussar Grill is certainly a superb evening out. We ordered everything from steak (cooked to perfection) as well as a tartar, calamari, cobb salad and mash, everything was delicious and decadent! Definitely going back for more! A special thank you to Graham & Stewart, see you gentlemen soon.

I absolutely loved The Hussar Grill, we had the fillet on the bone which was absolutely flavorful and delicious -- succulent and juicy. Rupert and Rothschild Wine, calamari was wonderful! The chili has quite a zing -- not for the faint hearted. And the chocolate vodka was so smooth and a perfect end for our meal. Graham the owner came over to make sure everything was perfect and the staff was excellent. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming and the price was very reasonable for the excellent quality of food. Definitely highly recommend and I hope to visit again before I return overseas.

Mixed emotions here. We arrived a bit early but they seated us anyway with a big smile on their faces. We ordered wine and it was perfect and exactly what a Merlot should be. Starters was great and the snails were full of flavor. The Camembert wheel was tasty but too rich. This is where it's starts getting a bit edgy... Wife ordered the lamb shank it was literally out this world. Best I've tasted in a while. I ordered the Hollandse Biefstek and it was lacking in flavor (had to order a side sauce to help its cause) and served in melted butter/oil. Not impressed. Mother ordered the chocolate chicken and it was so hot she couldn't even finish 1 part of the portion. There should clearly be a warning on the menu because even I couldn't stop sweating after I tested it. What a waste. So, if you want a glass of wine and a lamb shank, perfect. Anything else... Go a few steps down to the Green Peppercorn.

I had made a booking but it looked like they couldn't find it. Anyway, they weren't busy when we arrived and we were seated relatively quickly. Service was good. We received complimentary vegetable chips and olives. They didn't have two of the Reds we wanted, but no biggie, option three was available. Our server promptly removed a dirty wine glass when pointed out to her. We skipped starters, and ordered the ribs and rump, each with baby potatoes, and a mushroom sauce for my steak. The ribs were delicious, I'm told but my steak was mediocre - a bit grainy, no discernible flavour and on the cusp of being well done (I ordered it medium). The mushroom sauce was tasty though. The highlight of the meal was the chocolate vodka martini - not too rich but definitely a decadent end to the meal. When we left, the place was packed.

I went to the Hussar Grill in Morningside last week for a friends steak night and left with mixed feelings. The service was very good, the setting pleasant and the wine offerings varied and reasonable.<br/><br/>However, my sirloin, while cooked to the appropriate level for medium rare, lacked flavour, with the blue cheese sauce I asked for doing little to assist. I also asked for baked potatoes as a side which proved to be a mistake, as five baby potatoes, as well cooked as they were, didn't offer the same value for money as the butternut and spinach my friend ordered.<br/><br/>Ultimately, having eaten at most steak places in the Johannesburg northern suburbs, there are better steaks for better prices with better side offerings available elsewhere. A real pity given its convenient location, good service and fair wine list.

I have been to the Hussar Grill twice now and both times it was unimpressive. The steaks are very expensive and lacking the taste and flavours it promises. I had their signature dish the fillet bernaise cooked the French method and it lacked flavour. My husband ordered a steak on the bone and it came with no bone but lots of fat - so we were not even sure what piece of steak he was served. I also tried the mussel pot and there was way too much garlic and it had shards of mussel shell in the sauce so I kept chewing on the shards. For the prices charged and the excellence promised, I am disappointed with the meals I have eaten here on both occasions.

Really good food and cost atmosphere. Perfect for a great steak and glass of red wine. Had the chateaubriand. Was good however could have done with a bit more seasoning. Flamed at your table. Will definitely be back to try the ribs.

Having always heard good things the Girlfriend and I decided to give the Morningside Grillhouse a go. Traditional steak houses have always felt a little formal to me. Places where collared shirts and sports jackets are the standard and you really need to be able to separate your pinotage from your Pinot noirs lest you be ostracized by the staff and pelted with potatoes. <br/><br/>The Hussar retains the leather and wood feel of an upmarket eatery but is pleasantly relaxed , sharing the terrace of Morningside shopping center with a number of other great restaurants. You can alternatively be seated inside for a more intimate meal. <br/><br/>Seating is comfortable and elegant, the service, friendly and attentive. A pluses on both accounts. <br/><br/>I really wish I could tell you about how amazing their steaks are as so many reviews on here have attested to, but alas my stomach wasn't playing cricket. Feeling for a lighter meal I opted for the Chicken Parmesan. Pan-fried chicken clothed in a Parmesan crust and served on mash with a mustard sauce. A plus plus. The girlfriend had the grilled kingklip and a CSI team wouldn't have been able to recover the remnants of her fish once she was done with that plate. Some praise need not be expressed with wasteful words. <br/><br/>I like the Hussar Grill. I like that it's the perfect choice for a sophisticated wine and dine, but works just as well and is just as welcoming to patrons in hoodies and tatty Puma sneakers. I fully intend to correct my poultry blasphemy by sacrificing a cow (500g sirloin, medium to well, Béarnaise on top) to the Gods of the grill on my next pilgrimage.
Sashin Naidoo
Probably the best fillet steak I've ever eaten! The meat was grilled medium to rare which in my opinion is perfection. The steak itself was tender and very lean which packed plenty of flavour. It is somewhat an upmarket restaurant so do expect to pay more than usual but it's totally worth it for the quality of the food. The fillet steak goes best with a warm creamy mushroom sauce and a side bowl of mashed potatoes.

Went to dinner after reading some great reviews on the Hussar Grill restaurants in the rest of the country. Must start by mentioning that the service was outstanding - I think we got the comedian of the day and it was a pleasure. The venue is great with tables and partitions in between done in such a way that it feels cosy and you don't see how many tables and people there really is. We were first presented with a display of the different meat cuts before ordering, always good to focus the mind. We prefer the Fillet Bearnaise and the normal sirloin with a side sauce, grilled veggies and onion rings. The food was well prepared and tasted good. My only comment here would be that there is incredible competition in this area for steak houses and based on the competition this is not the winner, in fact it is average.<br/><br/><br/><br/><br/>

Excellent steaks and great service to match from helpful staff, especially our hostess 😎 The chateaubriand is highly recommended, and the burgers are really good too.<br/>

Pretty run of the mill given the premium prices being charged. Has pretensions to be something more but found the food to be average and our waiter was pretty lackadaisical - mixing the orders up, leaving one of our party without their food for around 10 minutes while everyone else greedily watched theirs getting cold. Generally disinterested. Probably won't hurry back.

This Cape steakhouse has come to take on the Joburg meat scene... and we are oh so precious about our grills up here. <br/><br/>They do a pretty good job. I had the Chateaubriand fillet steak that gets flambéd in brandy on your plate. <br/><br/>Unfortunately the Caesar salad I ordered was not up to scratch at all - flimsy lettuce, over boiled egg, and no effort made on presentation. I informed he manager of this, and he was very apologetic and removed it from the bill. <br/><br/>The sides were pretty standard - I wish they were more imaginative to support the excellent steak.<br/><br/>Not a place I would rush back to.
Ashish Sewgoolam
Nice ambiance but nothing special about the food unfortunately. I ordered the House Specialty game steak which was kudu and was underwhelmed. The medium steak portion size was good but there was no flavour to the meat and it was drenched in a viscous sauce that I can best describe as a "house BBQ" sauce that didn't compliment the meat. The meat also had a significantly charred taste and appearance to it, which almost tasted burnt on the outside that overwhelmed the pink inside. The same charred taste was on the chocolate chili chicken breasts although they were a lot better than my choice overall. <br/>Service was also mediocre with the food arriving and waitrons standing at one side of the table asking who ordered which dish. The worst part was when the waitress came to the table asking who ordered a Madagascan pepper steak done medium well and a friend Shiran Moodley said he had ordered that but done medium. She proceeded to walk away for a minute and returned with the exact same plate claiming it was a medium Madagascan pepper steak until the waiter that took our orders intervened and told her the medium well done one was on the other side of the table. <br/>Wait staff that arrive at the table with a variety of dishes asking people "who ordered what" is a pet peeve of mine as they took the order from each person individually so they should know. Wait staff who bring one thing and try to pass it of as another I have no tolerance for in premium restaurants. <br/>The waiter that tended to us was fine but was let down by the support staff significantly. <br/>First time to the Morningside Hussar Grill, but will struggle justify a return over The Green Peppercorn a few doors down in the same centre.

Post work celebratory dinner that was absolutely wonderful. Zamani, told us he recently started but his service was very attentive and considerate, made the experience that much more enjoyable.<br/><br/>We had the Fillet Béarnise and the Grilled Ostrich fillet. The beef fillet was grilled to perfection while the ostrich, slightly overdone but the sauce made up for it.<br/>Such a delicious choice.
Daan Jacobs
The ribs were watery and the waiter disappeared for 20 minutes. Removed from the recommendation list. A very disappointing evening as I was the unfortunate recommendor.

This is a truly phenomenal steak restaurant - comparing it to Turn & Tender this wins in terms of ambiance and variety of steak options. KevFabFood loved the staff, who are friendly and attentive without being in your way at all! Steaks are big and delicious with the highlight being dessert - the best desert drink I have ever had...Chocolate Vodka Martini...like drinking warm home-made chocolate sauce - decadent and so very worth every sip! The ice-cream cake was also a huge hit! We will be back and bravo to the entire team for a memorable evening! Good wine list at reasonable prices to compliment a fab menu!

My first time at The Hussar Grill will also be my last. On Saturday evening, my partner and I thought we would stop by for some wine and dessert. I ordered a certain bottle of wine, off the menu, from the hostess. Only once we had been having some of the wine, did we realise the bottle we had been brought was not the one we had ordered (the one brought to us was a different wine from the same brand, and we did not realise your mistake when the bottle was shown to us before being opened). We pointed out the mistake to the hostess we had ordered it from, who essentially conveyed that it was our fault for not noticing the mistake before the bottle was opened (note that the wine we received was significantly more expensive than that ordered). We asked to speak to the manager (who the hostess said she would summon) but for some reason the manager did not come to our table. This whole experience not only ruined the experience of the restaurant, but the evening in general (as you can imagine). Eventually the hostess told us we should pay what we can towards the wine (we were not offered the option of receiving the wine ordered). The experience had become so unbearably uncomfortable by that point that we agreed to pay the cost of the bottle we initially ordered so we could leave. When the hostess brought our bill she was not only visibly displeased with us, but appeared to be making an effort to display her annoyance (tossing the bill and pen on the table). After we had paid, she made sure to condescendingly remind us to double check the bottles brought in future (a check that, based on our experience on Saturday, certainly appears to be necessary at your establishment). She also made sure to highlight that the waiter would have to pay the price difference (between the bottle ordered and that brought), a move I see no purpose in beyond her attempting to "guilt trip" us for some reason. This is honestly the worst restaurant experience I have ever had. I was taken aback at The Hussar Grill's approach towards customer experience and the customer relationship. I would not expect this from lower-end restaurants, let alone a premium establishment. I was honestly very surprised at how The Hussar Grill handled the situation. Needless to say, I will never visit the restaurant again.

Good service. Good steak. Reasonable wine list. But nothing special. Same as most SA steak house chains like Barons but slightly more expensive (+\-15%). One dessert ordered, creme Brulè. Atrocious. Sent it back.
Anthony Wilter
Service excellent - just the right amount of slickness and attention. Food was disappointing. Had fillet on the bone, which whilst tender, lacked the flavour of quality meat one would expect from a premium price point establishment. Fries were over processed, and although crispy, did not taste like real chips. <br/><br/>Pleasant enough lunch but not enough to get me rushing back.

It was a Saturday evening and the search for a dessert bar/restaurant was on. To our disappointment, most places were closed. After much searching on Zomato, my sister came across the dessert menu of The Hussar Grill and it looked amazing. <br/><br/>When we arrived at the restaurant, there weren't any tables available as it was in the middle of the Saturday dinner rush. The friendly hostess at the front assured us that a table would become available in the next 15 minutes so we decided to take a walk around the mall and come back. <br/><br/>Upon returning to the restaurant, we were immediately seated and served. We ordered three desserts - chocolate ganache pie, Hussar Grill ice cream cake and malva pudding. All three desserts were incredibly delicious as were the cappuccinos we also ordered.<br/><br/>Even though I've only had dessert and coffee at this restaurant, The Hussar Grill is worthy of a 4 rating just for it's impressive dessert menu, great service and lovely ambience.

We had a late lunch on Saturday so we were not very hungry in the evening but I was craving dessert. The desserts section on Zomato was quite limited so I decided to look at other restaurants. I had previously seen friends pics of desserts at The Hussar Grill so I suggested to my husband that we go there. They were fully booked but the friendly lady offered us a place at the bar to wait at. We told her we would walk around the mall. When we came back she had a table waiting for us. The ambiance and decor was stunning and posh. I ordered the malva pudding, my husband has The Hussar Grill icre-cream cake and my sister had the chocolate ganache pie. We were not disappointed with any of the desserts, they were spectacular.  Our waiter was attentive and service was excellent. I cannot wait to go try out the main course when I go back.

Any situation where you're munching on a steak while the Beatles play in the background is alright by me. Bonus points to The Hussar Grill because the steak was delicious. The only wine by the glass on offer is Nederberg, sadly, but it serves me right for not committing to an entire bottle. And if I'm being picky, the camembert starter was a tad lacking in flavor. It needed more salt in the breading and much more cranberry sauce. The boyfriend had ribs - he said they were prepared more like pork belly than a traditional rack of ribs, which was disappointing. Regrettably, I had to pass on their inviting dessert menu. Next time. I'd say the steaks at the Grillhouse are marginally better, but if the Hussar Grill dessert menu lives up to expectations, overall, they're the better choice.

It’s not very easy to find a place that does desserts, pastries and coffees only. It’s exceptionally hard to find one late on a Saturday afternoon. After much browsing on Zomato and with not much success we came across the dessert menu of The Hussar Grill. The restaurant was fully booked when we arrived, but the hostess told us if we are willing to wait 15 minutes they should have a table available for us. The restaurant décor looks like a cross between a pub and a normal restaurant. The hostess and management are extremely friendly and helpful and the staff are fantastic.<br/><br/>We were just there for dessert, and will definitely be returning to try the starters and mains. For dessert we had the Chocolate Ganache Pie, which is a delicious dark chocolate ganache in a biscuit crust served with a chocolate sauce and ice cream; we also had the Malva puuding, which was my favourite, it was drenched in the sticky sauce and served with a dollop of vanilla ice cream; and finally the Hussar Grill Ice Cream Cake, which is the vanilla ice cream with peanut brittle, honey comb, and nuts, and is absolutely delicious<br/><br/><br/>

A good steak house, after successful outlets in Cape Town they are trying their hand in Gauteng. The decor is good old fashioned steak house. I guess if you are in the area it is convenient. The service is good. I could not complain about the menu or food served but there is a lot of competition around for this type food

Went for dinner with my partner, it's a new restaurant in the center! The waiters are friendly & knowledgeable on the different steaks! <br/>For starters I had the mussel pot which was good but less garlic would be better <br/>We had fillet on the bone & lamb shank with veggies! The shank was the winner for the evening! <br/><br/>Great evening overall

Nothing Short of an embarrassment !! Let us see what reaction we get!!?? Numerous staff members looked at what I believe is the owner, in disgust !! Why because we asked an innocent request to cut the steak a little thinner! It may be a strange request yes, but surely the reaction should not be too slam the steak down and comment" these people don't know what a steak is"! I eat out numerous times every single week and have experienced some of the finest establishments worldwide yet not once have I experienced this!! <br/> <br/>
Chiara Kotze
Great food and amazing service! We have been here a few times for lunch and everytime the meat and sauces are great and the service is excellent.
Bianca Allen
Hussar Grill offers everything you would want from a steak restaurant and then some! Traditional yet unique dishes and they get the fundamentals right - ie: a delicious steak!! Gorgeous setting and atmosphere so definitely get that bottle of red wine! We had the Fillet Moustarde and the Blue Cheese Sirloin, both perfectly cooked and great flavours👌 Creme Brûlée was good and the Choc Ganache was decadent and rich! Will definitely be back!
Sandra Lehmann
We had a good dinner here with a very friendly waiter. The food is a bit expensive but you'd expect it due to the location. I have been to better grill houses, but this was decent. The baked cheese cake here was to die for!
Karel Calitz
A great dining experience - great service and amazing steaks. A bit stingy with the sauces (prawn cocktails included), but that was quickly remedied.

Delicious food, excellent service and great wines. Warm and easy atmosphere. A great experience. Highly recommended for an easy weekend lunch!

Visited this place for the first time with a friend and it was pleasant enough experience. I had the Kingklip and felt with veggies and I felt like both dishes lacked seasoning and flavour. <br/>The overall experience was good so I would be willing to give this place another try.
Mbali Msimang
Really enjoyed how the place looks - slightly rustic, as a steakhouse should.<br/>I had the cranberry juice which they got right and their onion rings are glorious so order those on the side. Main dish was the blue cheese sirloin which tasted satisfactory and was well cooked (as were the veggies on the side)<br/> So all in all the meal was good - and everyone else at the table seemed satisfied.<br/><br/>The service was pretty sub-standard though.<br/>The only reason we didn't have dessert is that she didn't offer - or ask if anyone if they wanted drinks - or come back to clear the table.<br/>
Samantha Matos
I read the reviews on this restaurant and thought even if the service isn't great the food should be good. Sadly it wasn't, the service and food were well below par. The meal was over priced for quality. My chips weren't even cooked properly. Definitely will not be going back there.
Francois Pienaar
The service was a bit slow. The tablet based order capturing seems to be a bit inefficient. The food was amazing though. I had a Châteaubriand which was beautifully presented and cooked and had a taste of the wild hog ribs which are a definite must. The service could use a little work but overall it was a great dining experience.

We met friends at Hussar Grill for a Friday evening dinner last week... very friendly service, but it was felt by some to be a bit lacking.  Definitely a meat restaurant, not much else on offer...  My steak and peppercorn sauce was really delicious.. the ribs were reported to be super delicious.<br/>An enjoyable evening was had by all, and I would happily return..

I have been waiting for a few years for Hussar Grill to come to JHB now! Was so excited to try it out last night. I had the fillet bearnaise and it was as good as I remembered it from their Rondebosch restaurant! Forgot to take a photo because I was so hungry, the food did take long to come through. Dessert was the chocolate fondant. Yuuuum :)
Christian Nenkov
My girlfriend and I read the reviews but were not put off by the negative comments about the poor service. I can happily report that not only was the food INCREDIBLE, the service was also FANTASTIC! From the moment we walked in till the time we left, never once did we feel that we were neglected. We were checked in on frequently without it being annoying.<br/>Then the food....both our meals were excellently prepared, delicious and delivered quickly. The vibe and decor is also great, its simply an awesome restaurant!<br/>I can honestly say that our expectations were exceeded and would recommend this restaurant to anyone! We will return!
Garth Balabanoff
Having much excitement to try out this little spot we were let down by our expectations. From the outset food was GREAT (a little cold but good). Service on the other hand, was a real let down! We waited 1hour 15 for our food to arrive with absolutely no care from management that it took so long. Management have a displeasing arrogance that will keep me sticking to other, and far better, steakhouses who value their customers.
Bronwyn Esterhuizen
Very excited to try this new spot in Morningside, after the renown name and heritage carried by the restaurant we had high expectations. <br/>Credit where credit is due...<br/>The food was excellent. Steaks were more than tender and cooked to perfection.<br/>Unfortunately... We waited an hour and 10 minutes for our food. The meals arrived in bits and pieces, accompaniments came half way through the meal, coffee came after over 15 minutes, dessert came in drips and drabs, waiter was nonchalant and out of touch, and management couldn't be bothered. <br/>Overall opinion: I could name numerous steak ranches in Jhb that deliver food that is just as good, for a lower price, and much better service. Going to stick to my favorites.
Alison
A dreadful evening - although most our meals were taken of the bill . One wonders why spend so much on setting up and kitting out the shop and then fail to get the food right . So disappointing . A glorified Spur.

The Hussar Grill opened recently at the en vogue Morningside Shopping centre, around and the corner from us so we were obviously looking for fresh dining options. <br/><br/>The restaurant is already popular as most tables were already taken up in the prime dinner seating. Staff are attentive and helpful. The menu is reasonably extensive supported by a comprehensive wine list (not badly priced at all). <br/><br/>We had skipped starters and went straight for mains. The three pax including myself ordered the spare ribs, the sirloin on the bone and the Chateaubriand. I had elected the ribs which I would suggest one stay away from in future. They were Luke warn and dry. Given that the "grill house" look and feel I suggest they contemplate more exotic options on ribs, like American smoked or slow roasted. <br/><br/>The fillet on the bone was perfectly grilled to order, clearly using the perfect cut of meat. The Chateaubriand, according to our guest, was right up there standards wise. <br/><br/>Some lessons as it is a new restaurant: <br/><br/>- the waiter hadn't been trained to clear the fourth setting as there were only three pax<br/> - manager had checked the table and didn't correct<br/> - clearing empty glasses timeously and offering fresh drinks <br/><br/>That being said he was very helpful and friendly, we assumed that the lack of adequate training is the problem. <br/><br/>Overall conclusion is that the Hussar Grill is a great option and their pricing relative to similar establishments makes it a winner if they can be consistent with service and food. <br/>

My visit to the Hussar Grill held so much promise based in experiences in cape town , only to be let down from the minute I walked in during a quiet lunch period on Friday. <br/>I had to look for a host / waitron and had to ask for a table whereupon I was told I could sit anywhere. <br/>The waiter served the table next to mine but blatantly and completely ignored me whereupon on his 4 th pass I requested service. <br/><br/>Friends later joined me and the chicken liver starter was an also ran, lacking taste and seasoning. <br/>The chateaubriand wasn't prepared at the table and after much fumbling the waiter eventually flambéed it ... To no fan fare. <br/>My carpetbagger fillet was a major disappointment ... The tail end of the fillet was used with a thin tail and small amount of stuffed oysters. Fortunately for me this was way over cooked ( unforgivable for a up market Restaurabt )and the replacement was cooked to perfection but I somehow suspect that it was cooked from cold as it was cool in the center and the cheese hadn't melted at all. It did however taste good. <br/><br/>It's disappointing that a new Restaurabt with so much promise .. One that has a fantastic , classic old school menu ... Can then stuff up the basic tennents of hospitality. ... Welcome , service and good food, Waiters do no tell you that you could be wrong about a dish, that was already verified by the kitchen as being overcooked and then fail to apologize for his mistake. <br/><br/>Mmmmmm .... A steak restaurant that can't get steak right ..... Def off my dining list.
Pam Lourenco
This is by far one of the best steak restaurants I have been to. The food is amazing. The ambiance is superb and the service is excellent. <br/><br/>On the three occasions I have visited I have tried the scrumptious Mussel pot and the chicken livers for starters. The livers were creamy and just a bit pink (perfectly cooked) and the mussel pot was fresh and tasted like the sea, with a hint of garlic and parsley.<br/><br/>I've had the "CarpetBagger" on two occasions and both were excellent. It is a Sirloin stuffed with cheddar cheese and oysters. It is amazing. The steaks were perfectly cooked and the cheese in the center wonderfully melted. <br/><br/>I've also had the Sirloin on the bone and this was most delicious. A heavenly smoky flavour coupled with the natural flavour of the meat sent my taste buds into overdrive. <br/>I had the mash potato as an accompaniment and this was good too - just the right amount of salt and garlic and of course, no lumps!<br/><br/>Dessert - They have a very good selection of hot and cold deserts. I had the Creme Brulee - which was a bit disappointing - I have had better ones, but none the less it was creamy and well cooked. What it lacked in flavour, was made up for in texture.<br/><br/>The wine selection is extensive and well thought through <br/><br/>Overall a place I would visit again and again. Well worth the visit.
