Review Olives And Plates - Sandton

Jasmine
This place did not disappoint. I have been eagerly wanting to come and it was incredibly cute. We only came for the dessert and they had so much to choose from. The giant table with all the different cakes was really fun to look at. We ended up getting the carrot cake which was really tasty. Even though they were closing soon, they still provided great service.

Olive & Plates is a wonderfully charming establishment nestled within a bookstore, boasting delightful and adorable decor. The service is top-notch, thanks to the welcoming and accommodating staff. As for the cuisine, it's nothing short of outstanding. My steak, in particular, was so tender it practically melted in my mouth, surpassing the quality of some specialized steak restaurants I've frequented. I wholeheartedly recommend Olive & Plates for a lovely date, a casual gathering with friends, or even a relaxed family lunch or dinner – it's versatile and suits every occasion.

It is surprising the quality of food that this place can provide while being situated inside another store. The food and drink were excellent, better than a lot of very expensive restaurants. The service was great, unobtrusive, and attentive, with nobody constantly asking how we were doing. The cakes were excellent for pudding. I will highly recommend this place. You will leave full and not need any other food for the day!

What an amazing restaurant. Situated between books on the on side and an amazing viee on the other this restaurant has a real charm about it. Each table is meticulously decorated and every plate is well presented making it a true feast for the pallet and the eyes. Pricing wise it is a bit more expensive than some of the other restaurants, but it is an amazing place to relax, browse around between the books and have a coffee and something light to eat.

Olives and Plates Hyde Park, was simply amazing from the food to the service to the decor. Clayton was our server and did any amazing job, I had the paw paw fruit salad, was very big but really really tasty. We also ordered the toasted cheese and chips , the croissant with jam and cheese was super flakey and delicious. Will definitely go back, food was fresh and delicious 😋 👌

They served me the best eggs benedict I've had in my life. We arrived 20 minutes after the breakfast cut off time and they were still able to accommodate our eggs benny order. We got the Oak Smoked salmon Eggs Benedict on a croissant and the OG Burger, Mimosas and a Pineapple Digestive. Everything was very flavorful and got us wanting to come back very soon. The service was absolutely perfect and the ambiance was beautiful and glorious. Amazing experience.

I really liked the setting of the restaurant, and the staff is quite helpful and kind. The food is also great, would definitely come back again! Friend advised can come through during dinner for a nice night view ~

Amazing food, with a great cozy view (If you get a window seat). The resturant is gorgeous! The service was fantastic and so were the cocktails 🤞

The place is quite busy so I would recommend you make a reservation as opposed to just walking in. We had to wait for about 20min for a table and it was definitely worth the wait! The food was scrumptious and the service was top notch!! I loved the book store (well I love reading) which gave the restaurant part to have some sort of hidden gem (you have to walk through the bookstore to get to the restaurant). I had the lamb shank which was so tender and off the bone, my friend had pasta and the other had a chicken meal whose name I cannot remember. Their mimosas were to die for, I highly recommend!

The food was excellent the flat bread was buttery and flaky the best I have had in a while . The service was excellent , all the waiters are attentive whether it’s their table or not . The look of the restaurant is picture perfect , lots of beautiful pieces to capture beautifully decorated space ….

I ordered the Shakshuka and it was very tasty, full of flavour. It was very busy on a Saturday so it was quite crowded, but it's definitely worth to make a reservation.

Our waitress Thembi has to be the best waitress ever. The level of attention is incredible, at one point I looked up and she caught my eye and knew what I wanted without me gesturing to her. Then the food: 🤤🤤 I’m still thinking about it 4 days later. I had chicken pie 🥧 with mushroom sauce, it was delicious and creamy and the pastry was fluffy. The size of the chips 🍟 👀 the biggest cut and freshest The fact that the place is in a bookstore makes it an A plus restaurant. I recommend that you reserve a table if you want a great view of the city.

Desserts are really nice. The chocolate cake and the cheesecake both were one of the best in joburg. Highly recommended.

Nestled in a book store is the perfect setting. You don't expect the level of service, you can't measure it out of 10. Stunning food and desserts, you'll need another tummy to experience this place. And the service is second to non, it felt like I had my own personal butler and my beck and call

I had relaxing lunch time. The view was great, even the entrance in a bookstore made it even more special. Napolitano penne was so good.

My first time at this fine restaurant was incredibly memorable. The scent of the fresh flowers were intoxicating, without being overpowering and the ambiance was electric! Food was as beautiful as it was tasty. Service was top shelf and the dessert was even better than it looked in the beautiful glass display cases. I will definitely add this to my top places to celebrate a special occasion in Joburg!

Wonderful restaurant with delicious food, exceptional service and great ambience. Andrea's warmth and enthusiasm is infectious and she has passed it onto her staff who are great. Highly recommend Olives and Plates which has become my restaurant of choice for all occasions. Can't wait to be back. Highly recommend the ricotta hotcakes for brunch, the butternut and sage pasta for lunch and their lamb chops or fillet steak for dinner.

I had the pleasure of meeting the owner today while out for a very special lunch with my Mom... we had the most incredible meal, enjoyed fantastic service and then treated to a delicious piece of cake. You managed to make my special lunch with my Mom even more special.... thank you so much! I would highly recommend this restaurant. My favourite restaurant in Joburg by far.

Service: I was very disappointed in the service we received. After hearing so much about how great a restaurant this was, I was bitterly disappointed.
Firstly, we had to seat ourselves while the waiters watched us. We were not greeted, simply asked what we wanted to order. That alone could have been overlooked but the worse part was when we had no waiter within close proximity. No one checked in on us, whether we wanted to order more food or drinks. We had to flag down the waiter several times.

Food: In terms of the food, I really enjoyed my meal. The pasta was delicious and we didn't have to wait too long for our meal.

Vibe/Atmosphere: Granted there was a private office event or get-together, it was surprisingly audible. Of course, had the service we experienced been great, the atmosphere would have also complimented the food. The people in the restaurant as well were of a good caliber and everyone seemed to mind their business. Being a small restaurant by the busy Sandton west street, it was not as noisy as one would think. I mean just down the road was a bar-type establishment and it was rowdy.
The general setup is cosy, which was great. It really encouraged the setup. I would suggest a little aircon as we decided to sit on the outside, the inside of the restaurant felt quite hot, but of course this is subjective to each customer.

My hope in writing this honest review this helps the owners in addressing just some of the small issue I found. Bad service is unacceptable in a perceived establishment such as this. Despite this we did give the customary 10% tip but would have loved to give more.

Regards,
Lindo

AMAZIIIING. Everything was so yummy I did not get to take a pic. The staff are great too and the dessert selection is lovely. We were seated in the outside area which was cooler & quite (inside was full due to the weather) had the tapas starter to share (added the best calamari I have ever tasted), portions are generous and had some fresh gluten free chocolate cake to end it all off with. I will definitely be back soon

The service was impeccable and the food was just as amazing. A bit too small. I love finer details and they have one of the most beautiful glasses. The staff was friendly. I’ll definitely be coming back

I love this restaurant! I’ve been here a few times and have tried most of their delicious salads that are made with the very best ingredients and are all delicious and more than enough for a wholesome lunch. The service is excellent and I love the ambience too!

Olives and Plates in Sandton has one of the best breakfast selections around. Their menu consists of classic dishes with a modern edge.

Their decor is outstanding - elegant and classy. Their service is friendly and attentive.

Definitely worth a visit for a casual weekday breakfast.

All I can say is wow! I used to frequent the Olives at Wits in my Uni days and the food there was always good and affordable. The sandton branch is great, the decor is nice and the food look and tastes amazing, great quality and a great price.

The panko chicken was tender, juicy and extremely tasty, big portion so go hungry. My partner had the tagliata steak, which was a bit on the sweet side but still delicious.

Staff were friendly and efficient.

Definitely going back for more!

Unusual these days to go to a restaurant for a simple meal, and come away having had a really pleasant and relaxing experience. From the attentive service (Tendai), to the great décor and comfort and of course the truly delicious food, everything was 5 stars plus. Good also to see the hands-on and very active involvement of the owner / manager, who still had time to share a few words with us. Will most definitely be back. World class!

Beef fillet covered with rocket and balsamic vinaigrette, speedy service, great location, great atmosphere. Pity I didn’t have time to try out the deserts. I will be coming back again to explore this menu.

My friend was having baby shower at embassy towers.Despite how many people were there they were organised and brought out fresh delicious food .Had a salad, hummus and souvlaki, souvlaki was really tasty, pita was a bit tough to cut but it's better I guess than soggy pita .

Nice modern setting. Parking available in the Howells building. Have had breakfast several times. Their shashuka is really really good as well as their ricotta hot cakes. The soufflé omelette is very ig friendly. Friendly staff. really nice and relaxing spot

Recently popped in for a lunch meeting. The staff were very accommodating and there is are good options on the menu for vegetarians. This place is elegant and well positioned within Sandton.

The quality of the meal from starters to dessert was of a high standard and constant. I would recommend a pasta or sandwich and the pecan tart to finish off the meal.

I will pop in again soon to try some other items on the menu.

My sister used to get the veg lasagne for me when she was at campus. We then heard 140 West Olives and Plates' opening. We finally got the chance to go. Our waiter thought we were ordering too much even but we managed to take all the leftovers home. Every single dish surpassed our expectations. I havent stopped going there even if its for a toasted cheese. Always the best and you can see when effort and heart are put into a place. Always feel welcome.

Reservations are crucial!

We came for a Saturday brunch and the restaurant was fully booked. Luckily the manager made a plan for us and we were seated.

The menu is experimental and the variety is large.

The service was quick even though the restaurant was busy and the food was delicious.
Cannot fault this restaurant. The location and ambiance is perfect! The restaurant is magnificent and thought through to every detail. Their menu is fantastic and truly has something for everyone. Their staff are friendly, helpful and know the menu well. The standard of food at OP is always up there and their cake selection is to die for!!

Olives & Plates 140 on West sure is an elegant gem in the heart of Sandton, but is it a foodie gem?

Olives & Plates & Elegance

You walk into this small little patisserie slash bar looking restaurant with romantic lighting, comfortable seating diamond status feeling fixtures. They have done an excellent job at making you feel at home, but also make you feel as they if you will be treated like royalty, unfortunately that was only a feeling.

Food & Drinks

Pleasantly surprised by the delicious Long Island Ice Tea that they don’t even have on their menu. It’s strange how bars and restaurants struggle to mix this cocktail, lucky for us, Olives & Plates does a bang-up job.

We started off the evening with Meze Platter, and let us tell you, this is an ice-breaker, a crowd pleaser, an all-out must order.

Marinated artichokes, grilled halloumi, olives, hummus, tzatziki, guacamole salsa, all served with warm toasted pita and crisp breadsticks, as well as a crisp bread frisbee.

Mains is where things started going downhill a bit. We immediately went for the Linguine Prawn Pasta, one of our top pasta choices. They described it as zesty lemon, garlic, tomato & a touch of cream prawn linguine ‘must have’. Well, this is their most expensive dish and it wasn’t a huge portion.

At first we thought that it won’t be enough, but clearly, we misjudged this dish. This bowl of pasta was FLAMING. Nowhere did they indicate that they added chilli, and this doesn’t bother us too much as we do love spicy food, but this was so spicy that we couldn’t finish it, just a few bites made our lips burn. We told the waiter, he apologised and said he will tell the chef.

With that out of the way, we could dig into their Butternut & Sage Conchiglione.

Rich and very heavy with flat flavours. Sure, the butter and sage paired well, but it is an entire dish of just tasting creamy butternut and sage mixed with gorgonzola over and over. No relief whatsoever.

We were ready for good food, so we decided on an all-time winner, the Grilled Marinated Calamari.

Alas, no winner today. The best thing about this dish was actually the side salad and tasty dressing. The calamari was rubbery and bland, the only thing that helped was the lemon wedge with extra salt and black pepper.

We were about to give up, then arrived the Salmon Nicoise Salad…

This was what we’ve been waiting for all evening. This was perfection, with salmon cooked just right, a fantastic poached egg to dress and a big enough portion to satisfy anyone. If you ever make your way to Olives & Plates, do order this dish, you will not regret it.

We ended the evening with a baked cheesecake, something you can catch us with any day.

Not a bad cheesecake, but really nothing special either. Their desserts are freshly baked daily cakes, straight from the oven. Something that could be the best ending to an evening, but again, it fell a bit flat.

Service

From asking to move tables to ordering an off-menu drink, our waiter needed to ask the manager for almost all our requests. Maybe the manager should be waiting on the tables then.

Verdict

Although the evening started out great with the drink and meze platter, it went down hard with the mains. That and the subpar service leaves us with a feeling of regret, especially seeing as this wasn’t a cheap evening. The only saving grace was the fantastic mood that Olives & Plates set as you walk in.

TTT’s rating out of 5: Food – 2 | Service – 2 | Atmosphere – 5 | Value – 3

Olives & Plates gets a ‘Good on Ye’ from Two Tasty Tummies.

I am absolutely obsessed with the Olives & Plate franchise and was thrilled to find out that an outlet has opened right in the heart of Sandton!

The ambience is classy and sophisticated while still being relatively laid back. The staff are very attentive and accommodating and are well informed on the menu items.

The food is to die for and presented so beautifully! I must say that the pecan nut pie is the best I have ever had!!
I'm not even sure where to start because there are no words to describe how incredible this restaurant actually is. I've been to Olives and Plates three times now and it just seems to keep getting better and better.

My first visit was for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. My sister and I decided to share the arrabiata with a "twist" pasta and we decided to add the seared chicken. I kept wondering how shaved carrot would taste in a pasta and all I can say is that it was just divine. I also had a taste of the roast chicken pie and it has got to be the most delicious chicken pie I've ever had. It was then on to dessert. It feels like we ordered one of each dessert as I walked out of that restaurant feeling absolutely stuffed. We ordered the carrot cake, dark chocolate tart and custard mille-feuille. The custard mille-feuille was my favourite because I love anything with custard in it. The carrot cake was soft and also something I would go back for and the dark chocolate tart was nothing short of rich and decadent.

My second visit was for my sister's birthday breakfast. I saw French toast on the menu and I am a huge fan so that was me sorted. When it arrived, it was plated so beautifully and tasted even better. The cake/dessert display was once again too tempting so we ordered a couple for the table to share.

My third visit was just for a quick coffee on a Saturday afternoon. I ordered a milk tart latte to drink and it was a latte that actually tasted like a milk tart with cinnamon unlike the usual artificial flavoured lattes you get at most places. We also ordered the pecan pie, caramel and vanilla cake and sticky toffee pudding to share. The pecan pie really is something special. Every mouthful will leave you wanting more! The caramel and vanilla cake was really light and delicious and the sticky toffee pudding was also really good!

The service and attention to detail is impeccable. Olives and Plates is easily up there with some of my favourite restaurants. I can't wait to go back for yet another delicious experience!

One of my favourite restaurants in Sandton! Absolutely love this spot. The decor, homely feeling you get from the managers and impeccable service from the waitrons. Their grilled hake and salad is indescribably delicious and a generous serving with a shy price. The salad has the freshest and creamiest feta, wonderfully fresh leaves and the tastiest crostini. The pecan pie is mindblowing. I am always at a loss of words when eating this. We even run over to Olives & Plates to pick up two slices on a Saturday evening at 10pm (because we weren’t smart enough to get a booking in time)! I would sell my soul for this dessert and highly recommend it to everyone, at least once.

INCREDIBLE!
The service is impeccable
Food phenomenal!
We enjoyed the deconstructed chicken and beef souvlaki.
The portions are extremely generous and well priced.
The food was fresh, wholesome and well cared for.
The location is perfect for a business lunch or after work dinner.
The menu offers variety and the worst part is having to choose!!!
The owners were involved and so kind to give us complementary cake.

It is so wonderful to find a restaurant that offers healthy, wholesome food in a good portion size at a good price in Sandton!

No one should ever go to Tasha’s or Woolies cafe ever again with this in the neighborhood!
12.06.2018 A friend took me for a quick lunch here today. It's a nice walk from our offices. Such an elegant spot and addition to our lunch options. Service from all the staff was so quick, efficient and friendly. Love the decor inside, the outside is also quite trendy but it was just too cold.

Our food arrived rather quickly, didnt have to wait forever considering they were busy. I decided on the Fish and Chips, the batter was amazingly crisp and light and the Chips were perfectly spiced. My friend enjoyed his Beef Burger and fries, the burger Patty itself was a substantial size which is great.

Definitely a place i would love to go back to and try a few other mains and even their cakes which looked delicious.
