The food was amazing, the view was beautiful as we had a dinner with a spectacular view. Service was really great and the staff were very friendly.
Beautiful view, spectacular service and the music was lovely,an experience to be cherished until forever!!!will definetly visit again
The 500g T-Bone Steak was delicious and very nicely cooked to perfection. Veges were tasty but relatively small quantities. The view was amazing and the company was fun. Easy walking distance from City Lodge Bryanston. Nicely priced.

Very good experience and the view is amazing.....
It was very nice and d view up there is very nice
Staff lovely very efficient. Vibes good everyone very friendly and food very good.Just wish they would change special menu sometimes.!!
Beautiful setting, super service and great steak :)
Amazing! The view, the smell of the food coming out of the kitchen, the taste of the food on your table and the friendly service all contributed to an amazing dining experience with a group of friends. All the food on the table was delicious and some of the comments from the group included "great portion size" and "never had such a soft, juicy, flavorful porkbelly in my life"! Will certainly go back.
The staff are always great. Thank you to Vusi and Jimmy. The food is always delicious. The view is stunning. They have the hottest cuppachino ever, love it.
Visited for the breakfast in the sky experience. The food, service and overall experience were great. The breakfast was simple but very delicious. Will be going again for the dinner experience.
The view here is what most come for,it's lovely to just sit here and watch.Service is friendly.Coffee was good,.I had eggs on rye, breakfast was good, nice cherry tomatoes.
Beautiful view, simple but tasty menu and good service, always enjoy eating here mostly because of the beautiful views of Sandton. Lovely place for a coffee date or a bite to eat with friends.
Excuse my cute selfie I forgot to snap the food 😂
Yeah so I was little hangry when we arrived, make sure you’re on time so you don’t miss the liftoff. Suspended 40m above ground on a nice windy day with the platform rotating was kinda scary but you get used to it.
I’ll admit, the menu was underwhelming to read but I was pleasantly surprised when we were served, the stuffed chicken breast and cheesecake for desert 🤤🤤 the portions are generous and the food is EXCELLENT! Overall great experience and lovely service from our hosts.
Great service from Zanele! Beautiful view and great food enjoyed with friends.
Lovely restaurant to take the kids on a nice hot day. We will be back
Very relaxed place. Not badly priced. Very extensive menu, catering for everyone. Live music for sunday lunch. Great place for kids. Will be back.
Starters where awesome but a little pricey. Main great and desert exciting.
Good food. Decent service. Lovely view from the restaurant. Not badly priced. I will definitely be going back in the Summer for sundowners!!
My all time favourite. Open air, fresh feeling that really uplifts you from the city hustle and bustle. Food is average but good. More of a chill out drink with friends place where you can spend hours sipping on chilled drinks
This was such an awesome place. I would have never know about this place if i had not won vouchers here. Its situation in a school property and over looks the cricket field and the Johannesburg.
We opted to have a Sunday lunch here and it was just spectacular. We enjoyed a delicious meal while watching a cricket game.
Its a great place to just chill have a few drinks and eat some soul food.
We were fortunate enough to have spend our second anniversary here.
Awesome service and a very delightful place.
Loved this place! seated on the deck, with a magical view of joburg!
This venue is a must for the magical view and the food is delicious! I can see why it's so busy.
We where lucky to watch a cricket match below, the vibe is awesome and this venue is children friendly.
There was live music as we enjoyed our lunch.
I had the vodka and prawn pasta, with creamy spinach and Parmesan cheese. Served with a big piece of ciabatta bread on the side.
The wine selection is great, we enjoyed Chardonnay by the glass.
Dessert a lovely creme brûlée served with a strawberry.
What a lovely view. I have been here for both breakfast and dinner and have been amazed at the stunning view. The only downside at night is that the sports lights stay on till late. The food was a substantial portion and very tasty. Service was not the most attentive ever but we were looked after sufficiently.
Location location location! Best views in Jozi . Food sadly a bit mediocre and service generally slow. Best to go for pre dinner drinks . Watch the sun set and have a meal elsewhere.
Great venue with a relaxed and casual atmosphere with a view of the Sandton skyline. Beautiful for sundowners or great dinner with friends ans family. The waitstaff are friendly, efficient and knowledgeable. The food is amazing and the wine selection is good. The Salmon Stacker starter is very good. The pork belly main was a little "bleh" but good. The curry was fantastic
The service was decent and the view was amazing! However the meal we had was very overpriced and lacked anything special. The coffee was okay. I would definitely recommend going for sundowners however it's not worth going to for the food alone.
Only ever been here for drinks but it seems like a cool place. It has a great vibe. The fact that you have a wonderful view of JHB is just an added bonus. Still need to try the food.
I must admit I had never heard of Higher Ground until I was invited to a private event here. The restaurant is a bit hard to find, as it is located in the middle of St Stithians. I managed to get hopelessly lost on my first visit but Higher Ground was certainly worth the effort.
The view of the Sandton skyline from HG is pretty spectacular, especially at night when all the skyscrapers are aglow. The food is excellent, I ordered the grilled salmon hollandaise, accompanied by the most exquiste mashed potato I've ever tasted! The dessert course, which included a creme brulee and a strawberry cheesecake was equally delightful.
Higher Ground is currently hosting the Sky Dining experience, so you can sample their amazing food whilst 100 feet in the air. Definitely worth a visit.
Had an unbelievable picnic at Higher Ground quite a while ago but still worth a review. Firstly the service is top notch. It's exceptionally good and something that stood out for me. The food was okay, above average but really not "amazing". The views at Higher Ground however are worth going for. We were able to overlook the whole of Johannesburg. This is not something one gets to do everyday and it is a really beautiful and lovely memory I hold dear to my heart. The mojito is really worth trying too! Although there isn't a picture it really was good.
A five star gourmet meal is not always your craving. The Higher Ground is similar to some of the Bowling Clubs in Johannesburg, although it is situated in the prestigious St Stiphians school grounds. It's open to the public and worth a visit if you are in the mood for a view. The Sandton and Johannesburg CBD skyline is framed by the sports fields below. A great no frills no fuss venue with craft beer on tap, a good wine selection and food that will fill you!
Very pleasant and relaxed eatery.
Have had breakfast and lunch here and always enjoyed it.
The service is always friendly and brisk and efficient.
Menu has good variety and a nice wine list.
Decent prices and a nice view of the Sandton skyline across one of the school fields.
My Wife and Visited for our date night on Tuesday 10/05, this was my first time here, On entering the waiters where friendly and attentive. and the view of Sandton was spectacular. This is the club house or was the club house for the St Stithians Soccer Team or so it would seem from walking in. We where those customers who zero in and sit at the table which had not been cleaned and re-set. Not an issue, But would have expected the waiter to clear the used dirty knives and side plates when we sat down. He didn't so wo just moved them to the side, we weren't going to let a small oversight ruin our night. Welcome the waiter was decent at service, he understood we did not want to rush and wanted to enjoy the view. For starters We had the Crumbed Cambert and the Snails, both where good and well priced. They had a nice selection of Meats and Chicken, not over whelming. I had the 300g Rump Steak with Blue Cheese Sauce, my Wife and the Stuffed Chicken. Even though the chicken was over cooked and dry, the flavours of the dish where refreshing. My Steak was perfectly cooked and was complemented well with the sauce. We are looking to go back to try their breakfast and even their lunch dishes, as the chef obviously has some imagination. Service 3.5/5, Atmosphere (very business type, but the view is amazing) 4/5, Food 4/5, Cleanliness 3.5/5. We look forward to going back to try a breakfast with a view.
One of my favourite spots because of the stunning view of Sandton. Food is also really nice. Very tasty. Haven't been let down on that front. My favourite is the fillet with potato croquets and avocado. The service isn't the best, esp. if you're in a bigger group. Can take a little long at times. Prices are fair. Managers attentive.
Favourite place in Joburg! Recently hosted both a small family dinner on my birthday and a bigger sundowners gathering a few days later at this little piece of Joburg gold.
They even ordered my favourite wine (not on their usual list) for the bigger gathering.
Impeccable service. Gorgeous view. I'm becoming a regular. ❤️❤️❤️
Wonderful location and a nice relaxing vibe. The food was good but not great. I ordered the calamari which had Cajun spicing. It was enjoyable however more sauce would be good as the rice was dry and needed something extra. It is worth a visit for the location and atmosphere.
Awesome spot for drinks after work as well as dinner! Came here with a group of friends and it was a great experience. The homemade burgers are delicious and there are some great varieties to choose from. Amazing views and great service made for a fun evening out! Will be back soon.
The big smokes best kept secret without a doubt and a secret that needs to get out. The Higher Ground restaurant exemplifies the perfect hybrid and amalgamation of 'casual' yet 'sophisticated.' Furthermore, it is a restaurant that caters for a diverse range of needs and interests. Whether you are looking for some pub grub and an ice cold beer to wash down your meal with, or if you looking for a sophisticated and rewarding culinary experience full of unique flavours and combinations. This is your spot. It caters for you. In addition, the setting of the restaurant is as family friendly as they come. It is spacious and there are wonderful facilities to keep your lighties occupied and most importantly satisfied.
However, the biggest attraction of the restaurant is its unique contextual setting and backdrop.
Hands Down- one will not find a more pleasant and enjoyable place to dine and wine in JHB than this lovely restaurant. Elevated to the extent that it provides some of the most mesmerising views of JHB and the Sandton skyline in particular, it really pleases the eye.
Every day and every sunset is uniquely different yet uniquely spectacular. There is nothing better than watching the sun reflect off the tainted glass windows of the commercial Sandton Skyline. Equally as spectacular are the late afternoon thunderstorms that are ever so frequent in summer.
Overall, this is one of the best culinary experiences one can stumble upon in the 011. Whether you looking for a sneaky burger or an anniversary dinner- higher ground caters. And it caters exceptionally well.
It has one of the best views. A perfect spot for Sunday lunches. Good food, nice collection of wine, attentive service, pocket friendly. Will definitely go back.
Higher Ground is one of those unexpected surprises in life. I love to go for a relaxed afternoon lunch or sundowners. The first time I went I was completely blown away by the quality of the food they were putting out. Everything that I have tried on the menu has been top notch. One of the other reasons I absolutely love this place is the spectacular views and the "out of city" feel. When I need a quick escape from reality, this is my go to place. I gave it a four because the service hasn't been great and it always takes a long time to get drinks and food. Be prepared to wait.
A great weekend lunch spot! Set high up in the St Stithiens school grounds, it has a great view of Sandton. The food is good and reasonably priced and the service has always been good. We have had a range of foods from the wraps to the steaks and we have never been disappointed.
Beautiful view of sandton at night very relaxing and good quality on the food but definitely a must for the view even if it's for dinner or drinks..
A sweet little place with the most amazing view over Sandton. My poached eggs on rye was okay- they could work on their 'poached eggs' which are in fact microwaved and not cooked in the proper way, a bit disappointing. They have a very extensive menu, and the other dishes ordered were very good. I will definitely be back to try some other options as I hear their burgers are delicious. Good service, and a nice, simple ambiance.
A great spot for a chilled and relaxed time. With a couple of options for different people this place will be sure to have something for you. From a simple breakfast in the deli to a romantic dinner and everything in between the place is always a buzz of excitement.
The menu has a wide variety of options for the simple eaters who are just looking for something light like a salmon stacker to something rich and tasty like pork belly it is a great place for a meal.
It is also a great place for a drink on a Friday afternoon or for Sunday lunch and it is always a vibey place to watch some sport.
Give it a try your friends will thank you for it
Great view. The food is not bad - but nothing to write home about. Nice for a quick lunch on Saturday afternoons. The service is ok.
Had a pleasant dinner here many times in the past. The food is always above average to very good. Waiters are friendly, and know regulars by name. Good value for money.
Went here for a quick lunch on Friday afternoon. The view and vibe of the place are awesome. We had a toasted sandwich, a beef prego and the trinchado starter- all were really tasty. My main problem is that the food took an incredibly long time to come out, especially considering the kind of food we ordered. So won't go again for a quick meal, but will return if not in a rush.
Higher Ground invited me to their opening many years back so I had the royal red carpet treatment. I was introduced to the different dining areas within the restaurant. I was taken from the foyer and literally entered another dimension. Each venue was indescribable. There was a bakery that smelt like warm cookies straight out of the oven, then to a classy cocktail dining section, then to a lounge vibe, then a sport pub bar vibe and then to a outside braai area. Each area opens out to a deck overlooking the St Stithians rugby field and the Sandton skyline. Its breathtaking. Delicious cocktails, canapes (exquisite masterchef like) and mini desserts streamed out. Everything that hit my mouth was an explosion of flavours. I was super impressed with the venue and the food. I have always wanted to go back but it seems to not happen. Hint hint @timross lets go for sundowners. The perfect venues to host a variety of events, whether its a cocktail, a bachelorette, a kitchen tea, a launch..its versatile.
The first thing that needs to be said about this restaurant is that the view is spectacular. Your look out onto the Sandton skyline, and I can just imagine how magical it must be at sunset.
Ok, now, back to the restaurant. I was invited to Higher Ground for a blogger dinner #HelloRecommends.
I started with grilled calamari. The portion was the perfect size for a starter, it left enough space for me to enjoy my main meal, without feeling over full. The calamari, was delicious & well cooked.
For mains, I had a stuffed chicken breast. It was stuffed with olives, red peppers and sun-dried tomato. The flavour combination was amazing, it made me feel like I was sitting somewhere in Italy. The only negative, which to be honest is barely even a negative, there was too much stuffing and too little chicken. I know this is not normally the problem one has, but I wished for a little more meat. However, it was delicious.
Dessert, my favourite part of any meal! I had a strawberry cheesecake. It was deliciously paired with a cappuccino. The cheesecake, was just sweet enough, cream and yummy!
The decor is simple, and a little mismatched for my taste but still pretty. The service was excellent, our waiter was very attentive and was quick to fix any problems we experienced.
The food is good, wholesome & tasty. It was a great experience and I would definitely go back. However, this time I would like to try a delicious breakfast while soaking in the sun and the gorgeous view!
i was looking for a place with a view. And EVERYONE I asked suggested this place. A restaurant in a school. Not weird at all. But all the reviews were good. And I am glad I went by!
The restaurant is perched above one of the billions of rugby grounds looking of St. Stithians. On a side note, when the school does have one of those sports festivals, do go check it out because firstly, the sport is REALLY great to watch and secondly, the school is just beautiful! Anyway, this perch has a magical view of the Sandton skyline in the distance. I was just thinking how brilliant a timelapse would have been starting in the 70s before Sandton City came up and then moving on as you watch this new metropolis grow.
As you can see, this place makes you just wonder! This is a food review but I haven’t even mentioned food!
Anyway, the restaurant is a bar and restaurant together. The places on the balcony are quiet but it gets rowdier closer to the bar. The setting is not as formal as you would expect but uh, it’s in a school remember! Okay, it is a big school. But still. Anyway let’s get to the food!
YUM!
Ya – I enjoyed it! We ordered the Prawn and Vodka pasta and the Fernando’s Special (I think that was the name). The pasta was amazing. HUGE portion and my friend just kept eating and eating and eating. My meal was a bit varied when it comes to quality. The calamari and the chorizo were okay but were completely overshadowed by the AMAZING chicken. It came with a hot sauce that, apart from being hot, was just perfect for the chicken.
What I really love was that the manager came out and had a nice chat to us, telling us about the venue, and he happily invited us to come by during the weekend when there is a band playing.
Anyway, it was a brilliant evening out. That view made my mind work and the food complemented this so well. This is definitely a must try place in Jozi!
Very cool place with amazing views. Food is alright, service is ok. Best of it the view of sandton. Personally I believe a brunch/lunch is the best moment to go and appreciate the views. Great place for a romantic dinner too!
Truly loved it here. Kids get to play on the sports while elders catch up on wine on the deck overlooking Sandton. Wish there were more cocktails that one could choose from besides the famous 3
Fantastic restaurant with fantastic views. Could possibly be the new spot to go to in JHB. Great value for money with the great portion size and delicious food across the entire menu.
Trust me you need to go to this place hungry because you will just want to eat more and more.
This is Jozis hidden gem !! Oh yes , if your looking for a amazing spot and great comfort food then theirs no doubt the higher on the beautiful grounds of St. Stithians College, the gas the most stunning city view.
Upon being invited to this months #hellorecommends I was excited to get my foodie on with a three course dinner.
First course : Grilled calamari with Lemmon butter dressing.
- extremely salty but with it !! It's a staple starter and is grilled to perfection and is easily enjoyed plus there an amazing view that makes the sensory experience worth it.
Second course: Pan fried Norwegian salmon with , silly mash and veg.
- light tasty and comforting , salmon just melts in your mouth and the smooth mash is a perfect for the whole hearty food.
Dessert : oh boy did they deliver on the best creme brûlée on earth !!
- a crackle sweet top that needs a Little spoon fight , the underneath lays the best kinda sweet vanilla , thick custard in combo with the hard sugar its a great evening ended.
You gotta take your time as it takes 6 min before head up to the restaurant, but the family filled atmosphere and good food and amazing view makes it a must go-to !!!
It seems odd to have a restaurant on school grounds but the combination obviously works. The views from higher ground are spectacular and this is the perfect time of year to go.. Having lunch on the deck in the early spring yesterday was just what was needed after a crazy work week. The food is always good and has interesting twists, not just standard fare. The prawns were tasty and a good portion... The wine always flows, with service being friendly and attentive.
While the views, sunshine and live music are a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon, the food at Higher Ground is par. Steaks are really just ok but not really worth R125. Paella, pastas and salad were very enjoyable!

What a breathtaking view! All I want to do is go back and sit and chat on the veranda with someone special! Although the decor is not that great it really doesn't take much away from the restaurant. Our waiter, Archie, was extremely friendly and helpful and the food was delicious. I had the banting burger and I must say the home made patty was incredible, the patty was topped with mushrooms and aubergine and it also came with crunchie bits of halloumi, so yummm. The other food that came out of the kitchen looked equally impressive. Treat yourself to a lazy lunch or drinks after work, you will immediately switch off and relax.
We had a delicious meal here tonight, but there was a lunch time function that went long over lunch time and made the Atmosphere stupidly loud! They should probably build a private function room so that people don't not come again! Ribs were great though!
I visited Higher Ground this Sunday for a one-man lunch and I had the best time ever. The service was impeccible and I got to enjoy one of the best views in Johannesburg accompanied by really awesome live music. I ordered the bacon and avo rump which is a definate must-have. Their rump was juicy and so succulent. I did feel that the portion was small - but I dont know if that was just because the meal was so good that I simply just wanted to have more. Nestled on the sports grounds at St Stithians, I really felt like this was an awesome find on a beautiful winter's afternoon in Jozi.
Took my better half here today for the first time knowing that the food and the view would blow his hair back just like it has mine.
This venue is perfect to entertain clients or catch up with friends over a glass of sav blanc. Todays choices- lamb curry, ginger chicken burger and Avo & chicken wrap - did not disappoint. If only I could have let him taste their choc mousse but sorry for me, they were all out.
And of course there is that view. You just have to sit out on the deck on a crisp winters day looking out over the economic powerhouse that is Jhb and say, "Cheers dahling! " and know that life is good in the suburbs...
The venue is great for spending your day out in the sun, great view of jhb. Had the jalapeño burger, was decent. Drinks are a bit over priced. Otherwise worth a visit with a group of friends.
Good food - good vibe - great views - kids love the sports field to run around. Booze rather pricey but overall a great experience and we will be back.
Unexpected surprise - met a friend for a drink while her son played rugby .....ended up staying for dinner. Excellent service , Prawn and Vodka pasta - yum yum .....fireplace on the go ....fun crowd !! School was never like this in the 80's ....🍷🍷
The view is spectacular, and the food was really nice. Definitely more appealing in photos, I was expecting a much more sophisticated environment. However should you be looking for a relaxed atmosphere then there is little to complain about.
If you want a romantic view or just going to meet the mates for a dinner, this place is great! The view is phenomenal and the food is brilliant! Their burgers are big and worth every bite!! We may be locals here these days.
My husband and I went here for valentine's day last year, it was amazing! We were very impressed with delicious food and a great view! The service was great as they catered to our every need on a busy night.
So I'm not a saints old boy per say, but I must say, the higher ground is only top quality, from the quality of the food, to the staff who are friendly and helpful. The friendly manager ensures you are enjoying yourself, the bar is well stocked I've yet to have an unpleasant experience, I recommend this restaurant
This restaurant is not an experience, it’s a lifestyle. Has stunning views of Sandton. Great spot to catch up with a friend on a Wednesday afternoon.
I must mention that the coffee machine doesn’t work during loadshedding so be mindful of that.
Our waiter was very courteous from the moment we walked in. We received stellar service. 10/10
It's a wonderful experience. They could us some heating on the lift. If you go at night, bring a jacket because it gets really cold in the sky vice on the ground.

Great experiences, I'm afraid of heights a bit but definitely enjoyed the experience of dining in the sky... the food was deli....cious I tell you 😋😋 The staff was great and ofcoz got a lil prizzy as it was my birthday celebration 🎉🎉🎉
Great place to be and it was such a great experience the staff was very friendly and attended to me immediately when I enter that place. The food was amazing I will definitely visit soon
Well organized, friendly staff, nice food, beautiful view of whole Jhb😍😍
Do not die before experiencing the place 😁, the food was awesome, knowledgeable and friendly staff. It would be nice if they improved on their reception though, we got to the venue 45min prior to take off as advised however, there was no one to receive us or properly explain what needed to be done or what to expect, few guys in their workmen suits just casually pointed from a distance telling us to wait there until we decided to go to a nearby pub and waited there until 15 min prior to boarding when we went back and were given consent forms to fill-in. The overall sunset dinner was perfect!👌
I love adrenaline rush and this breakfast in the sky experience gave me just that. It was amazing having to eat while suspended about 40m up from ground.
The food was delicious and filling, they offer an open bar service as well.
The staff was amazing and the hostess funny.. I loved it and I highly recommend. Next time I'm definitely going for their dinner experience for the sunset and just city views at night
There was a da family day, kids loved it, all in very nice.
Such a nice restaurant with great food and stunning view to the city.
I was greatly impressed by this restaurant. The food was great, music was amazing and food impressed. Pricing was fair. The view is really the cherry on the top. I would recommend this venue for a casual drink or for a function.
One of the best experiences in my life!! Amazing...... Not for people who are scared of heights!!! Sit down, get strapped, enjoy the view, enjoy the food, enjoy our City!!! A must try for everyone.
Lovely restaurant, they have a good menu and I like the fact that you can walk around the grounds after your meeal

Great food and great atmosphere, just expect a bit of a wait on busy days so don't go in a rush. But Great experience overall
What an amazing experience! Definitely a bucket list moment, service was excellent with friendly smiles from all. The atmosphere & surroundings were breathtaking during sunset... Will definitely be there again soon!
The experience was so enjoyable that I even forgot that I was over 100 feet in the air. The main 🍽️ was on point 👌🏿 , the dessert 🍮 was so good that I wish I could have more.
Thanks to Thuli 👸🏿 for being an awesome host and making it a memorable experience with all the mentions not forgetting Alex 🤴🏼 on the drinks
Excellent venue with great views towards sandton. I have eaten here many times and my last meal was brilliant, really delicious carbonara that was uncomplicated and so tasty.
Good restaurant. Service was great and meal was delicious. I had the cordon bleu which I recommend! Was divine, mash was creamy and tasty! And chicken was tender but crunchy. The rest of our table enjoyed their meal as well!
