Review Coachman's Inn - Sandton

Jozi Girl
What a delightful evening. We were a party of 7 having a business dinner. Warm friendly entrance with the most hospitable staff. We were treated to complimentary sherry and rolls. The owner was amazing. Spent a lot of time at our table advising us on the dishes and then served us with the best of the best of his wines. Every meal at our table was enjoyed and was accompanied with side servings of veggies. The Belgium chocolate cake with spun sugar was yummy and so was the creme brûlée however the Eaton mess was disappointing.

I've been here several times and not yet had a bad experience. The staff are attentive and the food arrives pretty quickly. The atmosphere is very good. Not a place for kids though.
Sibusiso Ntsali
It's a nice place to in or take away though the wine after meal or wine with ribs and stake keep your taste buds running
Anne-Mart Olsen
Amazing with phenomenal dishes and a cozy, romantic atmosphere. The award they received in 1994 as the best international restaurant is relevant to this day. The owner takes pride in the art that is served to his patrons and he takes an active interest in the people that walk into his Inn. We were blown away and will most assuredly be back.

Excellent service and good food, however, I was expecting a bit more from the food and the seating feels a little tight.
Glen Lester
Been eating here for 20 years and never had a had abad meal here. Service and excellent and the owners are awesome. Still my favourite place for some fine dining!
Claudia Broadhead
If you're looking for fine dining, amazing service and all at a reasonable price, then this is the place to visit! We had the best evening in ages
Thembelani Peter
I had the most amazing experience at the restaurant with friendly customer service..and amazing food

Coachman's is an exceptional, owner run restaurant where the quality of the food is second only to the team's warm hospitality. Do yourself a favour!

What fantastic food oh my word! Three courses of bliss but especially the dessert!

We came here to celebrate our 3 year anniversary... Very welcoming old-world charm. Food delicious and generous. Service attentive without being intrusive. We shared the tongue starter which was beautifully presented and very tasty, followed by a lemon and champagne sorbet. We both had variations of duck for mains, cooked to perfection. We skipped dessert as we were too full. My only gripe is that the wine list is unimaginative, small and pricey (Boschendal, Fleur de Cap and JC Le Roux predominantly)and they don’t allow you to bring your own wine. Otherwise a great evening out.

What an amazing experience - from start to finish. The moment you step in, you already feel welcome as you are greeted with warm smiles in a very cosy atmosphere. I was on crutches at the time we visited Coachman's Inn. The waitress offered to carry my bag for me as she took us to our table. We were given complimentary welcome drinks and were welcomed by the owner just before she personally went through the specials of the day. The only negative thing about the evening, was when I couldn't decide what I wanted because everything sounded SO good. We placed our orders. I was surprised as to how fast our food was ready. The presentation of the food was absolutely sublime. The taste, however, was even better! Can't remember when was the last time I had such a good meal. Besides the waiter coming to check up on us, the owners and the chef also came to our table personally to find out if we are happy with our food. I really had an amazing evening. I will definitely go back! Thank you so much, Coachman's Inn!

Can't belive I'm only reviewing my favourite place now. 20 years eating here, never had a baf meal! The service is always on point. It is as old school as you can get! Still my favourite restaurant, and the prices remain competitive, you get real value for money!

We went to Coachman's for our wedding anniv. Absolutely loved it. The food is superb, waiters are friendly and what a pleasure to be welcomed an accompanied to your table by the owners themselves. Cannot fault this place, you will not regret booking a table here.

What a warm friendly reception ! Food was superb with exceptional service I think the only thing that I could critique is the atmosphere is a tad stiff but that's just me besides that it's a true gem

Fantastic service and delicious food so refreshing to receive 5star treatment even on a Tuesday night. Thank you for a wonderful dining experience.

Awesome, awesome, awesome!!!! It's our favourite restaurant. Fantastic food. Their gluwein is delicious, good selection of beers and exquisite food. The great service is not unwelcome either.

We had a really special evening, from the unique ambience and beautiful table settings to the outstanding waiters, service and most of all food. 🍽 The Coachman's Inn is for me a part of Johannesburg's heritage and has always maintained all they offer since the very first time we ate there years and years ago.

Food was so nice . Good staff . Can't wait to go again

I haven’t been this blown away by a restaurant in a while . This hidden gem in Bryanston is everything and more . <br/><br/>I came here for a dinner date with a friend . On the outside this place gives off a church feel . The building looks like a combination of a church and a vintage castle . From the moment we stepped in ,the owner /manager was so hands on with us . <br/><br/>On the inside it feels like you’re in a little spot in Paris or something of the sort . This sounds overly exaggerated but I’d really encourage you to check this place out . It lives up to the hype in this review . <br/><br/>Our waiter ushered us to our table ,I must say though that their tables are rather small . We were given complimentary sherries . The manager came to tell us the starters of the day . How he managed to remember all those menu items without reading off a menu was quite something .<br/>All the starters were quite interesting combinations ,I ordered the mango and prawns starter .<br/><br/>Those mango slices were some of the freshest slices I’ve ever had . The combination with the calamari was quite something but a very yummy dish . I also appreciated the palette cleansers in between our meals . Fine dining at its best .<br/><br/>For the main meal I ordered a Entrecôte Dorchester . It was rather spicy although the waiter said it’s not too spicy . I have a very low tolerance for spice so this really was a lot for me . <br/>The steak was juicy, prepared exactly how I ordered it and very filling . We couldn’t even finish our sides that’s how filling our meals were . <br/><br/>This place is really amazing and without a doubt I’d highly recommend it. More ideal for a romantic evening though. <br/><br/>Stunning stunning stunning !!

Warm atmosphere , rich French cuisine- super presentation in a formal and quiet setting. So nice not to have a noisy concrete lined food hall. And to see variety while so many places are cut and paste ideas of the same fare. The food is traditional and deserving of the many awards earned over 40 years.

What a wonderful culinary experience we had! Great service, friendly and relaxing ambiance, delicious food and great value for money! We will definitely be back more often!
Chereen Williams
A trip down memory lane (I guess how fine dining was done back in 'the day'). Food and service was top class and almost homely feeling. Although all the dishes were amazing...stand outs were the pork belly and duck. A definite winner and must try!

Quaint restaurant with a quiet but intimate atmosphere. It’s a unique dining experience with a variety of unusual dishes. Staff and host are friendly and very professional.

Fantastic food, great atmosphere and phenomenal service. Thanks to everyone at Coachman's Inn for a wonderful evening and will definitely be back soon!

We had such a lovely date night here. The restaurant is old school, the servers are knowledgeable, attentive and discreet, the owner is a proper hands on restauranteur. The building it’s self is quite large, but the eating area is quaint, old English in style, and intimate. The owner gave us a tour of the newly built pub and a yet to be opened functions area with is RIGHT OUT OF HARRY POTTER! Diagon Alley is right here ;) <br/><br/>The wine list is something special. Some real<br/>Golden oldies, at excellent prices.<br/><br/>The waitress offered us a complimentary sherry while we were looking at the menu and we sipped these on the balcony.<br/><br/>We chose the mussels and cheese croquettes for starters, a great scene setter.<br/><br/>I had the Camembert steak for mains. I was expecting a more solid cheese, but it was served with a sauce less creamy than anticipated, although very tasty. My partner went for the Kudu steak and adored it. The mains were served with veg on the side.<br/><br/>We could barely look at the dessert menu, but ended up sharing a proper creme brûlée. I would have preferred it more vanilla-ry, but the texture was and sugar “crust” were perfect.<br/><br/>Great spot for a date night or a small group, they also have a small conference facility.<br/><br/>Will definitely be back!

We having been eating here for the past 28 years and we have only had great food with great service and with a wonderful ambiance .<br/>My wife always feels very special when we eat here because the menu offers food that she does not make at home.<br/>

Celebrated out 7th wedding anniversary tonight. <br/>The food was superb!<br/>The service outstanding!<br/>Cant fault anything at all.<br/>Looking forward to the pub opening. <br/>Raun Smythe

My Fiancè and I decided to pop into this restaurant out of curiosity. And wow.... We were not disappointed! When you enter, you get welcomed with such lovely smiles and of course a complimentary sherry. The service is absolutely incredible!<br/><br/>I had the kudu fillet and it was easily one of the best meals I have ever had at a restaurant. From the plating to the flavours. My Fiancè had the pork belly and it was cooked to absolute perfection. The fat was rendered perfectly and had the most incredible crunch, while the meat was beautifully juicy and soft.<br/><br/>I would definitely recommend this place to someone who has a huge appreciation for food and flavours as every bite possesses a symphony of flavours. <br/><br/><br/><br/>

This place was recommended by a friend. I loved it. Cosy personal feel and touches, amazing menu with the most flavourable food. Reasonably priced and superb attention to detail both in decore and decadency of meals. Book ahead.

What an amazing restaurant. Everyone is so friendly & helpful. The chef came out to talk to us on various occasions during the meal. They made our anniversary so special.

Last night we decided to go to Coachman's Inn - having not been there for years. And we were reminded why it is still going strong for so many years. The old fashioned romantic ambience was a lovely change from the funky, modern look of today's top restaurants. The crystal wine glasses still sparkle, the cutlery is shined to a mirror-clarity and the attention to detail was noticeable in many other areas. Service was fantastic. Being welcomed with complimentary gluhwein (which was delicious) was a great start to the evening. The food, as we remembered from years ago, was superb - with the duck and pork belly being highlights. We had a minor incident with a bad bottle of (it had oxidised) but this was sorted out in the professional manor that CI is known for. What a delightful evening. We will back!

Spent an amazing anniversary dinner here! Experience was outstanding from the get go. We were greeted with a welcome drink to warm us up which thought was a lovely touch. The restaurant itself was cosy and nostalgic. Service was attentive yet discreet with waiters being knowledgeable and friendly. <br/>The menu is predominantly french with interesting items and combinations. We settled for the porcini mushroom soup and lobster bisque to start and were impressed. Great depth and intensity of flavour. <br/>For mains I had the rabbit with pear and raspberry jelly which was a treat! @JacoDP decided on the kudu and thoroughly enjoyed it. We shared the chocolate gateau with peppermint ice cream- tasty, although I found the gateau to be chilled too much as it was quite solid in the middle.<br/>All in all a great restaurant, amazing food, good wine list and outstanding service. Will definitely be back.

PR0711 <br/>Spent our anniversary dinner here. Great ambience, and good service. The food was fantastic. Love the old school feel that the restaurant has.

Spent our Anniversary dinner here last night. What a wonderful experience. Great service. Friendly but discreet staff. The mushroom starter was devine. I had the duck for main and my husband the rabbit. Both meals were exceptional. Definitely our highlight was the chocolate mousse dessert. Rich and silky it was sublime. <br/>

Beautiful and very friendly staff... On the downside it is a bit cramped. Loved the ambiance and the food though a little less salt on my oxtail would have been better... Felt like I was out of South Africa for a min 😚
Larisa Louw
Charming decor, though it smells a bit musty. Excellent service, average food, very expensive. Smoking area on the porch still lets the smoke in. Quite cramped inside. Not bad but won't return.
Tarryn Hayter
Went there on Friday for my boyfriend and I 2 year anniversary dinner. The food was really good but the salmon that I ordered had far too much sweet chili on the plate it over powered the meal.. other than that everything was perfect. Excellent service and friendly staff always making sure you have everything you need. We definitely going back for the duck.
Cuan Humphries
The perfect spot for an intimate dinner with incredible food and perfectly attentive staff. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a special, cozy night out.
Norman Helfrich
Service was excellent. Starters were delicious. Sorbet was overly sour. Duck was dry, overcooked and tough. Coffee was tepid. Voiced my disappointment to owner who proceeded to tell me that mine was the only complaint received and asked what business i was in as if to insinuate I should not complain about what i receive in an industry I don't know. Pity that one feels one can rest on one's laurels because one has been in the industry so long. Maybe the age of the clientele should be a concern. I remember it being so much better but definitely will be cautious to recommend it to others because if they are discerning they won't be hoodwinked by mass overhyped snobbish opinion. If he had just accepted my constructive criticism possibly the rating wouldn't be so low and i may be tempted to go there again. Many better places available so now it is a no!

Booked for our first visit to celebrate our wedding anniversary based solely on the reviews on Zomato, we were not disappointed. Cozy, historic setting, great service (complimentary sherry, sorbet and port) and fantastic French style cuisine - duck and steak were phenomenal. A restaurant that makes you want to overindulge during every course, can't wait to return with reinforcements!
Seranne Motilal
Excellent restarant with a superb selection and very friendly staff! The space is well decorated and has a lovely ambience. The owners go out of their way to make sure you have a lovely time.
Kevin Purves
One of my favorite "Old Classic" style restaurants, and some of the best french cuisine in Gauteng. The service is always extremely efficient and friendly, and the food quality is very consistent. Not big on modern flare or gastranomic science, but always a wonderful evening of pampering.
Patrick
Excellent menu sélection. Great cuisine with attention to detail. Good service & attentive host. Cosy ambience for conversation and catching up with friends. Our first but not last visit. A most enjoyable evening with friends.

Last night I visited Coachman's Inn for my Birthday. I was pleased by the old school look as well as the spectacular service from the Waiter. The food was absolutely amazing as well as a lot of complementary things on the side like Sherry, Pallets cleansers as well as a Desert free from me visiting them for m Birthday.

This rather old school restaurant reminds of entering into a european chateaux where I'm dining with royalty. The maitre'D greeted us upon the magical gate that opened sesame. We were ushered in a formal manner to our cozy table in the corner near the old fire place. It was such a cute little corner, the feeling of being in a play tent. The menu is French cuisine based. Even the menu is in an old fashioned bound fairytale book. The food is of high quality. The choice and variety was definitely beyond what I could dream of eating at that moment in time. The seasoning was to perfection, each bite is even better as you sit there savouring your fine dining in a state of enlightenment. Thank you chefs, I am in a complete state of food bliss.

An iconic fine wine and dine classic restaurant with generous portions. Crispy Duck or rare fillet are recommended. Personalised attention from arrival to freshly cooked food. Delicious dessert and an excellent wine cellar.Old vintage reds at reasonable prices. The only restaurant that decants your wine, that impressed me. Ideal for that special date or anniversary. We will return.

Coachman's Inn has been on my restaurants to try out list forever and they did not disappoint. It is charming, the service was fabulous and the food was excellent. It was a delight. If you feel like good food in a setting that is unique, this is absolutely recommended.

Don't phone Coachman's Inn today and expect to get a spot at this fine dining restaurant this evening. Book in advance to be sure you get to enjoy the tastes they have on offer. Of all the restaurants I've eaten in Johannesburg, this one impressed the most on a culinary level.<br/><br/>We were hosted on the top floor which is quite dingy and cramp, but in line with the olden age atmosphere of the place. Of the complimentary cherry offered on arrival I chose the dry while my wife chose the medium. Both were good but next time I'll try the medium. Really good cherry, not the kind you'll buy off the shelf in a bottle store or use on Christmas puddings.<br/><br/>For mains I had a medium-rare fillet. I've never had anything of the kind before. It was the softest, most tender and tasty fillet I've ever had. My wife still raves about the Kudu cutlets she had, which was recommended over the rabbit. If you want good food I'll recommend you definitely give this a try.
Amy Taylor
Absolute delight! The staff are all very friendly and very efficient. The food is immaculate, all the meat cooked to perfection. Thoroughly enjoyed my experience here!

I had not been to this amazing restaurant in forever and wanted to find out if it is still so good and comfy. It did not disappoint. Service is quick and discreet but very helpful and warning. It feels a little like you're eating at grandma's house.<br/><br/>We ordered the Chicken breasts in a Moroccan spice and the East coast some. Both dishes were really great and tasty and well presented; we felt like we could carry on and eat more even though the portions were more than enough. For desert we ordered the decadent chocolate fridge cake and was this a decadent treat. And such a spectacular looking dish! Overall I remain impressed with the great food, great service and warm homely feel if this restaurant.

Tried the Coachmans In. For a birthday dinner last night after not being there for many years!! It hasn't really changed much- service and attention to detail was great! Owners were around often to check we were all happy-nice personal touch. Had the duck at chefs recommendation and was very happy with it- perfectly cooked and very tasty. Rest of the table had pork belly and fillet which they all enjoyed. On the dessert side the creme brûlée was a bit disappointing but the cheese boards, Eton mess and chocolate cake were divine! It's well worth the visit!

If you looking for great service, great food this is the place to come. Owners are hands on, waiters are brilliant. Family business.... So you just know you are in the best hands.<br/><br/>When we arrived we were greeted with warm smiles and sherry.... (This was literally on tap all night).<br/><br/>The owner comes and tells you the specials. To give you a little taste of the specials menu: starters: fresh oysters served on ice, stuffed calamari tubes (there were a few more) for the mains: gorgeous duck, port belly, beautiful fillet done with a mango curry.<br/><br/>Our table had the duck, pork belly and fillet. For dessert we had a decadent chocolate dessert, creme brulee, Camembert and Brie cheese platter and Eton mess.<br/><br/>The food was outstanding! I highly recommend this place for a lovely little spoiling. Owner run so lovely and intimate.<br/><br/>Extremely reasonable.... Mains + dessert and wine and beers we each paid R300.00. Really worth each penny.

Food was exceptional, the ambience was not great. I expected some French music, owner or manager based on the sales pitch of the restaurant. The menu is also French but then there's no French wine and no French music. Then I bring my own Grenache and corkage was not allowed. Disappointing! The duck was great though !

My wife and I have been wanting to go here for almost 3 years. Finally got a chance and all I can say is WOW!! We had a private room upstairs, great vintage style and French cuisine. The service was excellent. Our waitress made great recommendations and always went the extra mile to cater for us. I had the mango and prawn with curry sauce starter (10/10) and the Fillet Bearnaise main (10/10).My wife had the Sea Bass main (9/10) and the creme brulee dessert (10/10). All in all, definitely a restaurant to add to your list if you looking for delicious French food topped with superb service.
Razmataz
The ambience is somewhat dated and quite stuffy and don't understand why they squeeze the tables into a small section of the building. Very clean and well appointed with amazing service<br/><br/>The food we have had on numerous occasions has been exceptional. From the amazing cheese croquettes, lobster, duck, pork belly, etc has been faultless. Nice touches like the sherry on arrival and the lemon sorbet palate cleanser between courses bring a smile from guests
Leonie Kruger
Wow!!!! I must honestly say that this has been one of the best experiences we have had so far. Me, my husband, brother in law and his wife had a splendid evening. The food was brilliant, vibe fantastic and service was beyond words. We are looking forward to MANY more visits. Great value for money and certainly very special.
Santanaheart
The food was superb, very cosy atmosphere. Perfect for a Romantic night out. I loved the old vintage style of the place. The waiters were excellent and have very good recommendations from the menu. The also give a complimentary sorbet to cleanse the pallet after each meal, I thought that was great. Definitely would go there again.
KB Feminutsi
I visited this establishment for the second time, with family, hoping to recieve the same great service and cuisine as per our first visit. However, it shall no longer enjoy our patronage due to the thoroughly shocking behavior of the owner. There was an uneasy tension as all diners could hear the manager shouting and carrying on at his staff in the kitchen, and our waitress was called to the back on 3 seperate occasions during the course of our meal (along with all the other staff) to be lashed out at by this terrible shame of a manager. <br/><br/>I made sure to tip our waitress well, who was nothing short of delightful, and must add what a pity it is that this manager is allowing his poor character and bad temperament to spoil the ambiance
Ian Roode-Orlin
What a gorgeous evening out. The setting is old world charm, the service is impeccable but most importantly, the food is spectacular. Asparagus warm and cold starters for me and calamari for @The_Gossip_Guy followed by the best pork belly I have ever had and fabulous chicken Moroccan tagine. I cannot wait to go back and then become a regular visitor. What a divine birthday treat this was.
Stoil Michaylov
By far one of my favorite restaurants! Excellent service, superb food and the a nice vibe. It is the only place I've been to where you're treated like you're the only customer. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a good dining experience. Book in advance because getting a table on the day is near impossible.
MarcelloMaestro
A highly recommended restaurant. Whenever we have tried a number of places, and feel that it is now time for a great, tasty dinner, we give Coachmans a call!! I have probably visited Coachmans Inn at least 4 to 5 times a year for the past 10 years. Food is always excellent. The ambience is sophisticated, romantic. Here you can have your taste buds satisfied with very flavorful dishes. During a recent visit I ordered the creamy lobster bisque for starter. All flavours well balanced, and very tasty. Followed by the mango chutney stuffed fillet - insane! <br/><br/>Whenever the mango prawn starter finds its way onto the menu - order it without hesitation - this is an amazing starter. <br/><br/>Face it, for a restaurant that's been around for so many years, and still have the ability to surprise everytime, is no simple accomplishment! <br/><br/>How I Rate and review an establishment :<br/>1: Terrible, will never return will never recommend. <br/>2: Ok, not worth special effort, I can make the food better at home... <br/>3: Satisfied, restaurant offer good service and satisfactory food, the money paid is in line with quality of food received. <br/>4: A gem, worth visiting for a treat or special occations and referring friends. <br/>5: The very rare and best - fine dining, incredible food, presentation, and service. Honestly no more than 6 such places in South Africa ! <br/><br/>Establishment: French, Country French cooking, fusion. <br/>Related restaurants in this class: La cucina di Ciro, Licorish Bistro<br/><br/>Food - 9/10<br/>Service 9/10<br/>Romantic factor 9/10<br/>Decor 9/10<br/>Value 9/10<br/>Satisfaction 9/10<br/><br/>Lastly take note- I do not have time to review every chicken coop that sell food or to rate typical places, we all know what you get at these establishments and the average person does not need advice on eating at your local Debonairs or Spur! <br/><br/><br/>
Lauren Kim
A restaurant that looks like it belongs in the middle of London during the dark ages with stained glass windows and many different rooms. On arrival we were treated to some gluhwein - perfect for a winters evening. The food was incredible - fine dining at its best - roasted pork belly, springbok shanks, mushroom risotto and the Creme brulee were all tasted and all amazing! If you like good food - worth a visit!
Harsha
Wow! What an incredible place. The service was exceptional, the food delectable and he hosts were so hospitable. Even though we hadn't made a booking, the owner made a plan for us. And welcomes us in with a lovely glass of gluwein on the house and from then on every need was catered for. We had the duck and it was out of this world!! The chocolate fudge cake with peppermint ice cream was absolutely divine.
Louise Schnetler
We had dinner here a week ago. It was fantastic! We've always wanted to try it and I'm so glad we did! Our waiter, Evan was great and very professional. The food was delicious! I also received a follow up phone call the next day which is a great touch and not something you get much these days! We'll definitely be back!
Carina Van Zyl
Going to Coachman's Inn is a real treat and going with the right expectations will make it memorable. Don't expect it to be the hippest place to be seen, but do expect your coat to be taken and put in the cloakroom, a welcome drink, palate cleansers between courses, perfect service and delicious food. <br/><br/>Our waiter, Evan, was very friendly and attentive. <br/><br/>They have an extensive list of specials which all sounded delicious. I had the duo of porcini soup and it was outstanding. My dining partner had the mussel soup, also good. For mains we had the Wagyu sirloin and the half duck, deboned, with orange sauce. Both were delicious. For dessert I can recommend the chocolate fudge fridge cake, especially if you have a chocolate craving!<br/><br/>This restaurant has been around for 35 years and you can tell that the owners and staff take pride in what they do. This was evident when I received a phone call the morning after our booking asking whether we enjoyed our dinner. The restaurant is spotless with everything polished to a high shine. The decor is seriously old-school and it fits the ambiance perfectly. <br/><br/>Coachman's Inn would be good for: dinner with the parents, special occasions and any date after the fifth date.
Daniella
This place is very different, from the outside it looks like an old pub and then u walk In and get welcomed by the owners and taken to a small but very comfy room that u share with only another 6 tables it's very intimate, the Service is immaculate, and the food! Wow wow wow ..
Linda Magowan
My very favourite restaurant. Food, service and attention to detail exceptional. Just a little old fashioned and could do with a revamp. Very quaint old English style which is lovely for winter but not summer.
Adele Geldenhuys Koolen
What a quaint little place. A friend suggested we meet here as she hadnt been therein years. We were greeted by extremely friendly staff and both owners are constantly on the floor, checking on the patrons, chatting and making you feel extra welcome.<br/>For starters I had the garlic snails, and they were really yum. My friend has the lobster bisque and raved about it.<br/>For mains we both had the half duck with berry sauce! I love duck and this one didn't disappoint.<br/>I skipped dessert but she had the chocolate fudge cake and it really looked very yummy.<br/><br/>Value for money is great and the staff are amazing. I'll definitely make a trip back there

The place where time stood still. This is a gracious english themed restaurant. The service is very old school, which I loved. The service was very good and food delicious. I really enjoyed the trouble taken with our wine. It gets decanted into a lovely decanter. Then the person tasting gets a tasting glass for this. If it found to be acceptable, then the rest are served in our normal wine glasses. Takes serving wine to the next level, which i appreciated a lot. Its well worth a try and overdue for me to go back for a second round.

We drive past this restaurant almost everyday on our way home so we finally had to try it since we had a birthday to celebrate and we wanted to go fine. The welcoming and the ambiance is very nice and cozy. We were the first and for a while the only guests here. Our server was on top of her game, explained the special menu to us and were always good for a wine recommendation. A little minus I have to give cause her tattoos showing just doesn't fit in the picture of french cuisine/ fine dining. I enjoyed a braised duckling for R 140 but it just wasn't a WOW experience. As a dessert we ordered the mousse au chocolate with hazelnuts and again...it didn't blow me away since it was half frozen still and for their prices i guess I can expect a homemade mousse. Minus as well will be the noise level  between service and kitchen. 5 customers arrived as last table of the evening and we were all able to hear the chefs complaining fairly loud to the server that they wanted to close the kitchen already.  I dont know if I would come back cause the overall experience was just an OK compared to their prices.

Excellent food, great ambiance and professional staff! We've been a couple of times and each visit never disappoints. The Kudu is fillet highly recommended!

Awesome food, service, value for money, ambience. What a treat. Coachman's is a classic restaurant, perfect for a romantic evening or a special evening with friends.
Caraline De Canha
All round friendly team who really wanted to please. Old French decor. French traditions, cultural experience. Menu has French amongst many other cuisine. Starter duck spring roll, delicious. Main pork belly, done to perfection although not a huge fan of 5 spice could have done with out that flavour.

Normally i don't break down a restaurant into segments but i feel i must with this restaurant. <br/>Welcome : 5/5<br/>Ambience : 5/5<br/>Service :5/5<br/>Four of us went and we all rated the food 3.5 out of 5.<br/>The presentation was brilliant but it just failed in some way not to be exceptional. <br/>We were all surprised as this restaurant has had such high ratings from other patrons. <br/>I'm going to go back to give it another try because it really is such a gracious restaurant. I'll update this then <br/>Parking is easy which is a plus in my book. <br/><br/>

I have driven past Coachman's Inn many times over the years, and last night we finally decided to try it out for dinner. We were welcomed in (event though they weren't open yet) and led upstairs to our table. The aesthetic of the restaurant is very unique in Joburg. It is very old school, with crocheted table overlays, old world artwork and other antique gems. We did not know what to expect at all from the food!  The menu is very impressive, and then the specials make it even harder to choose a meal! My partner went for the Pork Belly and I decided to try the Rabbit Roulade (I have never eaten Rabbit before). I was so impressed with the food and how wonderfully it was presented. The pork belly was absolutely delicious. I really enjoyed the rabbit, although I am not a great fan of the flavour, I cannot fault the way it was prepared & presented. The service was excellent. Our waitress Helen was polite, friendly and very courteous. Overall a wonderful experience. I look forward to trying out more of the menu items. I really hope that the word spreads of their fabulous food!

Coachmans' Inn has been around since the 1980's, always comes to mind when I am craving French cuisine. <br/><br/>In terms of ambience, this is definitely one of those 'Fantastic French' places and the first time I drove past it, I could not help but notice its unusually traditional Tudor style. It seems Coachman's Inn has really built up a reputation for classic french favourites like rabbit, Foie de Canard, and escargots with a comprehensive wine list to match.  <br/><br/>I have only popped in for a drink, but I liked what I saw so much that I plan to go back to this cozy little gem soon for a much more comprehensive evening with friends!

My husband and I always go here when we need a special night out - food & service is always top notch! The choc fridge cake is really to die for...

My boyfriend and I went to this lovely old style classic restaurant for valentines dinner last night. We had been before for dinner and the food was exquisite so it was a no brainer to revisit. <br/><br/>The decor is lovely and intimate and a lovely classic ambience. <br/><br/>But ..... Being valentines they had a set menu with their specials of the night. <br/><br/>We started with a glass of Kir Royale which <br/>Was a treat. And were served a bowl of Three Melon Soup which was delicious with mint, mace and sage and garnished with three Melon sorbet. <br/><br/>My partner had the Mango and Prawn starter served with a light curry mayonnaise sauce which he found to be really good. <br/>I had the exotic Mushrooms served on puff pastry, and drizzled with truffle oil. Divine. <br/><br/>Then for mains he had the Half Duck, deboned, served crisp with a berry sauce. He found it slightly dry in places but nice none the less. <br/>I had Scottish Salmon in a honey and ginger glaze, served on crushed herbed potato with fennel which I found to be really nice. <br/>The Dessert was 'Valentine surprise'<br/>Which was a small platter of chocolate mousse, cold creme caramel and a berry pudding which was delicious. <br/><br/>The service was a bit slow. They could've done with another waiter or two. <br/><br/>In all a lovely meal. And we shall return.

I like everything about this place. The old school but charming decor, impeccable service and delicious food. The food is full of flavour and there are always great specials. Perfectly cooked duck, the pork belly had crispy crackling and the salmon was pink and succulent. Complementary sherry on arrival and sorbet between courses complement a complete dining experience.

This place never fails me if you want a truely good meal without the pretense and fake rubbish that has taken over the bryanston and fourways area this is the best bet food well prepared and fresh, service excellent and hosts amazing has a very homely feel to it.

Awesome little place. The building itself is very quirky and ambiance set in the Tudor dynasty which is confused by the mixture of French (Belgium chef) and Cypriot owner. We were admitted before they opened and had a lovely chat to the owners wife. The waiters were around like ninjas, service was good.<br/><br/>We had 3 starters, all of which were delicious, duck spring rolls, mango prawn curried mayo, crab cakes. For mains we had the mango filet and plum duck ... Wow ... So much flavour! All of these were on the specials list, we never got into the menu!!!<br/><br/>Definitely a place to visit! The pricing is towards the higher end, where starters range between R50 and R100<br/>And mains R140 plus.<br/><br/>They offered us a complimentary cherry and lemon sorbet palate cleanser!!!

I have not been to the coachman Inn in at least 10 years. And I have thought to myself that it had gone down over the years. I now know that to be untrue. Not only has the restaurant lost none of its charm but the food remains some of the best I have eaten.... Bravo

The level of sophistication that goes into the presentation at Coachman's Inn should be acknowledge. The restaurant is very cozy and traditionally decorated with meaning. The food was exceptional, I couldn't stop stuffing my face. The lemon sorbet to cleans the palate is a refreshing tradition many places have lost. I would recommend this place for a quaint dinner night with a partner or friends.

This place came highly recommended for a special night out and it delivered exceptionally. The menu offering was amazing and the specials were incredible in terms of flavor and innovativeness. <br/><br/>The decor was too outdated and reminded us of mothballs so we took a table outside. Our table ordered duck, oxtail, oysters and risotto which were all prepared wonderfully. Dessert was equally good except for my cheese platter which was a disaster to say the least. Service could also improve a bit for a place like this.

Dear Nick, Anita and Helen<br/>My 70 th birthday dinner in one of your private dining rooms was to all accounts a huge success.  Our guests raved about the food and the service. One friend said she noticed that not only were all at a table served promptly, but that the orders were correct and the plates were warm! She was hugely impressed.<br/>Thanks for being so helpful at our meetings . Your input was so important to us.<br/>Helen, you went the extra mile with the menus and flowers on the table. Many thanks.<br/>I am so glad that I chose the Coachman's Inn to hold my birthday dinner.<br/>Kind regards <br/>Rose 41/2

Coachman's Inn is one of those places that always catches your eye when you drive past. It has taken me a while, but I eventually decided to try it out, and I am glad I did.<br/><br/>The interior is as pleasing as the exterior, and it feels homely inside. The staff are always aiming to please, and look after their customers. The menu has a wide variety of attractive options, and there are always specials(recited by the staff) to make the decision just that more challenging. The staff know their menu however, and are able to make recommendations.<br/><br/>The three courses I had where all fantastic, and I was pleased that there was a palate cleanser in-between starters and the main course. The normal wine list has nothing surprising, but the vinotique section is where the real gems are found(and these bottles are not badly priced). The coffee was satisfactory.<br/><br/>Overall, the impeccable service is what stood out from everything else, with the food only marginally behind.

For a truly special and romantic evening, look no further than this French restaurant. The perfect place for a couple to share an anniversary or just to show how much L.O.V.E! You have for your partner. The food is all delicious and you have to make a long evening of it and pace yourself for 3 courses of magical food and superb service!

Brilliant experience. Lovely food, sorbet between courses and complementary sherry, it is a must.

For my mother-in-law's birthday we went to the Coachman's Inn. I have been before so I knew what to expect. However, I just love the cozy atmosphere and friendly staff. <br/>For starters I shared the crab cakes which were delicious. Crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. Unfortunately, there was a mix-up with my mains, I ordered the pork belly but the waiter order the pork fillet. Luckily I realised before I ate it and they fixed my order quickly. The pork belly is served with a plum sauce which was so rich, sweet and sticky which complimented the pork belly. <br/>For dessert I ordered the chocolate fudge cake - all I can say is that it was hard for me not to lick the plate. It was one of the best chocolate desserts I have ever eaten and could have had 6 of them!<br/>Overall we had a fantastic and enjoyable evening. I will definitely be going back and would recommend that others go too.

The ambiance at Coachman's Inn is wonderful. You feel as though you have gone back in time and are living in the Victorian era. The food and service are of an excellent standard. The only factor that I found overwhelming was the menu. Otherwise it is a great choice for dinning out if you are willing to splurge.

This is a really cosy restaurant with excellent service. we were given complimentary sangria on our arival (I was even offered a second round - which I took ofcourse) and complimentary port after our dinner as well. The menu it an extensive list of rather unusual foods (springbok, hare, duck, warhog, ostrich). Great if you're looking to try something new. I had never had springbok shanks before so have no basis for comparison but I wasn't a big fan of that particular dish (even though it is served spectacularly in your own little potjie pot).

My boyfriend and I celebrated our anniversary here, based on nostalgic memories I had of dinners past. We were not disappointed. Coachman's Inn is the kind of place where it just feels right to dress a little fancier than usual and expect great service and excellent food. <br/><br/>We had a cosy table in the rafters, where we could enjoy the quiet, no one on cellphones, and no blaring music - or people constantly asking us how we were enjoying ourselves. A large part of our enjoyment was due to our excellent waitress, Helen, who was by turns efficient, friendly, funny and helpful (especially as I have food allergies and had questions about virtually everything on the menu). She did her best with a recalcitrant aircon system, too, but that just added to the memories we'll have of our dinner. We'll be sure to ask for Helen in particular when next we book a table. <br/><br/>The food was excellent, just as expected - my rabbit roulade in particular was to die for - and the wine recommendations were stellar. <br/><br/>Just one niggle - you might want to caution your male waiters that it's not particularly funny to commit to social stereotyping and imply that your male guests are suckers who're only good at dropping money on their dates - especially when the lady in question is paying.

Severely outdated (and overpriced) 80s menu. Food was cooked poorly although the ingredients were fresh. Had the salmon, cheese croquettes and ceasar salad. The salad had too much sauce, the salmon was below average (odd flavour combination with candied ginger) and the croquettes were too dense and heavy. The service however was very good.
