Review Chuck Yangs - Rondebosch

Wanja Coetzee
What a lovely hidden gem!! My friend invitede to this little Chinese restaurant. The waiter was very very friendly and well informed. He was very helpful with the menu and making recommendations. The owner also came and greeted which was very pleasant. The General chicken was the star dish. It is SUPER crunchy chicken pieces with a sweet sticky sauce. 10/10 highly recommend. I also enjoyed their dumplings. Definitely a must visit if you're looking for a good Chinese restaurant.

My review is based on the food and the service only. This is very authentic Chinese food. We had their steamed fish - this was perfectly done in a delicate soy sauce with shredded spring onions. We had the Chinese Veg of the day as a side and steamed rice. Small family restaurant, very friendly service. Will definitely go back to try the other dishes. Updated my review today - 7 August 2022 : Chuck Yang is our regular go to for authentic Chinese food. We recommend the Garlic Eggplant and if you enjoy tofu - the Tofu stuffed with pork is excellent. Their General's Chicken is always popular. Update: Jan 2023 - Still our go to for quick and great Chinese food. Our lunch today wasn't on the menu - the chef cooked us a custom meal because we wanted something different.

Rice noodles was awesome and the deep fried chicken just fantastic

We had a delightful meal here. It ticked all my boxes- clean, attentive/helpful staff/ decent background music and of course... Delicious authentic food. It was one of my brother-in-law's favourite place to eat.

Perfect dining experience. Friendly staff and owners. Meals were prepped within minutes and the food is as authentic as you can get. Their general chicken dish is a must have. If you need a meal to go - try their chicken/beef/pork lunch boxes. Definitely recommend to everyone who would love to try Asian authentic food.

Great food. Portions are generous and delicious. "General" anything is amazing, general pork is our favourite though. Ordering over the phone is not always easy unless you can speak Chinese... highly recommend them though.

Chuck Yangs is one of the restaurants in Cape Town that make great traditional chinese food! The general chicken is a must have. The service is absolutely spectacular!

First time here. I absolutely loved the tofu suey that I ordered. I was a little disappointed it didn't come with a serving of rice (this is how I'm used to it) but I'll remember to order some next time! What really stood out for me was their customer service. Jason was really friendly, had me seated and took my order. He brought out a glass of lemon water while I waited and included a sweet with my change which I thought was really nice. He pays great attention to detail. Granted that the restaurant was not exceptionally busy (Sunday night), he walked me to the door and made sure I was safe in my car before returning back inside. How sweet! This man deserves a raise! Katy (who I assume might be the owner) was cheerful and happily assisted me with placing the correct order. She made jokes with customers (who I assume are regulars and why wouldn't they be? This place is great!) and with a smile, went about her business. Your lovely restaurant exudes WARMTH and WELCOME and you guys will definitely see me again! THANK YOU SO MUCH for your excellent service!

We can only compliment Kathy for her nice welcoming and attentiveness and the good professional quality of the food we were served. The price is not on the expensive side and the presentation of the dishes is according to the best Chinese cuisine. We will surely be back soon.Arturo D'Agostini

Another great meal, can’t fault the food. Ambiance is a little lacking but part of the appeal too.

Walked past this place many times and finally decided to give it a try. A small gem hidden away with absolutely incredible food! Will definitely be back

V. Good Chinese food! @ reasonable prices...bring your own wine, no corkage fees

This is by far the best Chinese restaurant ever! The food is not so oily as I usually find with Chinese food in general. The portions are big and at good prices. There's ample vegetarian/vegan options to choose from too, with our favourites being 3-cup tofu, tofu in brown sauce with black mushrooms, and general tofu. The actual restaurant is not so wow. Usually people just do take out. But the quality of the food trumps the simple look of the restaurant. The staff (usually the owners and their son and daughter) usually take turns running the place and they are all so friendly. It's also child friendly. They usually have toys or goodies that they give to the kids at no extra cost. We drive all the way from the northern suburbs to have their food and it's ALWAYS worth it.

The food is incredible and so well priced. Portions are enormous. And brilliant for vegetarians. Possibly the best option in the southern suburbs!

Chuck Yangs if fairly good Chinese food at a reasonable price with large portions to share among friends and family. M favorite is their pork lunch box with a nice pork schnitzel, one veg dish, an egg, rice and one other meat dish.

The waiter is nice and prompt with keeping you updated on your order and bringing around drinks. Service is occasionally slow but this is expected as everything is made fresh to order.

Very unique family/owners. Friendly, helpful and their food is really good. We are happy to take our vegan friends there as well. Whether take away or sit down, it's worth it

Went there with a friend. It was a unique and authentic experience. The portions are quite generous and will leave you satisfied with your expenditure

Best Chinese food in Cape Town. Been there numerous times. Sadly Chuck has passed away but his family are still providing amazing food. Please carry on.

Chewed here several times. The sweetcorn and chicken soup is surprisingly good. The special crispy pork has that addictive MSG tang that you're sometimes after when it comes to Saffa Chinese food. Good choice for a takeaway for Saturday night Netflix sessions.
Rachel
Paid about R100 for their general chicken (apparently their best dish). Honestly have never wasted money like that, it was such a disappointment 🙈 sadly won't be back.
Thuli Kunene
Decided to give Chuck Yang a try and I cant say I was disappoint nor can I say it was the best I have had. Had the Beef egg fried rice n the Chicken noodles. The noodles were a little over cooked and not as tasty as I would have liked. The Beef Egg Fried rice was really nice. I will def try them again.
Terry
Authentic Chinese food! Deliciousness cooked by the owner himself! The General Chicken is #1 and you wouldn't be disappointed with anything else you order! You gotta try it!
We've been regulars at Chuck Yang's for years and I've never had a bad experience. I enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and the friendly service! We order several dishes to share and the general chicken is a winner.

A little hidden gem tucked away in Rondebosch but they have the best Chinese food in Cape Town. The food is always great and their general sesame chicken is the best meal there. The food is also never too oily like other Chinese restaurants.

Finally used the zomato voucher I received for Chuck Yangs and after reading through the reviews ordered the General Chicken and some rice as a takeaway. The food was ready very quickly. The portion was huge and is definitely enough for atleast 2 people (or 3 depending on how hungry you are). It was very flavourful but the shape and texture of the chicken was slightly weird in a way that I don't really know how to explain.

We are regulars, once every 2 months for at least 4 years. The only Chinese restaurant in Cape Town we go to. Simple place, great dishes and the family are fantastic people.

After finally deciding to use my zomato voucher after a month or so , i really wanted to have nothing but good things to say about this place .
I appreciate their friendly service over the phone and even upon our arrival, they have the warmest service .
It's located not so far from the buzzing area of restaurants such as your michaels bar & kitchen , but you can easily miss it because it's very small and stands right at the end of the line of restaurants .
The decor is very inviting for people like myself who love hidden gems for their cosy atmospheres and the unique culture they all possess. It's also more ideal for families, especially the cute outside area with the round table.
I ordered the sweet & sour chicken and steamed rice (oh and they have VERY large portions ) that's always a safe choice but I was still disappointed .
It tasted good at first but as the taste settled in my mouth , I didn't enjoy it at all anymore , the chicken was definitely sweet, JUST sweet and chewy. It lacked the sourness to balance the flavour of the meal out. It came with some sort of stir fry w/ green peppers, onions and tomatoes I think and the stir fry was very, very bland. I could not finish it at all. The sauce was watery and lacked flavour.

I also have to add the fact that I'm generally not very big on Chinese food , so those of you who are fans should try it out really. 🤙🏾

We are never disappointed here. We usually order general pork/beef but this time opted for coriander and sweet basil beef and pork chop suey. The beef dish is 2nd under the top 10 dishes at the restaurant.... it is absolutely outstanding! Chop suey also lovely with beautiful Chinese vegetables. We had a veg, tofu and egg soup for starters. Lovely, light and perfect to begin the meal.

Our favourite Chinese restaurant by far!

Friendly atmosphere with good food at an affordable price. Would definitely recommend for the family or just as takeaway on a lazy night. Great tastes and variety in food.

We're great fans of Asian cuisine and having received a voucher from Chuck Yangs through Zomato, we decided to pay a visit. Located alongside Some Oaks Bistro in Rondebosch in a snug space, it's easy to miss. But the aromas wafting from the kitchen and the friendly welcome received, made this a good choice.

There is sufficient seating in the restaurant Fur about 20 patrons and a more cosy private book outside for more intimate diners. They seem to do a lot of take away orders as these were constantly streaming out the door. Everything is made fresh and the waiting time is appropriate.

We ordered two veg spring rolls which were tasty and well cooked. A favourite is anything sweet and sour, so we opted for chicken. It was tender, moist, served with flash fried onion & apple. A bit light on the sour side and I yearned for more ginger. We had another favourite, beef in oyster sauce served with onion and green pepper. Thin slithers of beef were well coated in the silky oyster sauce. We also had the garlic calamari which was calamari steak strips as opposed to calamari rings, crumbled and fried. Hubby loves egg fried rice so we had this too. It was smokey and delicious!

There is love, care and passion in the dishes produced and portions are generous. A side must be selected if not going for the noodle dishes, which we will be back to try next time.

Thank you James Hobbs and Zomato for introducing us to this little gem in the hood!

BigJoe

Simple, tasty food. Good service. Sort of place you'd go to as your local Chinese restaurant. A family run business with a sense of pride. Nice.

I have been a customer of Chuck since the 1990's at The Chinese Seaman's Club/ Jewel Tavern in Cape Town Harbour. Mainly Chinese customers from the ships and harbour initially, until the word got out, and local Capetonians started eating there. The best Chinese food in Cape Town and really friendly service. All in all, a fully "authentic" experience that is hard to beat, and Chuck's place in Rondebosch may be smaller than the "Jewel", but the same quality applies. Great, unpretentious place with the emphasis on the food. Tops!

I was introduced to general chicken 2 years ago and I am still hung over it. I am 6 months pregnant all I think of is general chicken and sweet basil and coriander beef my little bun just cant get enough. yum yum

Went Friday night. Just do not go then. Service poor. Food was poor and old. Waited one hour. They do not have enough staff. Mostly focussed on take aways. Next day we got food poisoning!!

Nice cosy venue with a good personal touch. The portions are always generous and enough to share between two people. The food is good especially the general chicken though they don't have red pepper chilli.

A real old-fashioned fortune-cookie type of restaurant. Sweet and sour chicken, egg fried rice - that kind of thing, along with some American-Chinese standards that we don't usually get around here, like Kung Pao Chicken and Ma Po Tofu. None of it is what you would call authentic, unless you mean authentically like the Chinese restaurants that you went to as a kid, but everything is fresh, simple and well-prepared. There are more adventurous Chinese options out there, but this is a decent standby. I would have given it another point, but it's pretty expensive for this kind of food.

The best Chinese food I've had in Cape Town, thus far. Got the beef lunchbox take-away for R60 and it was delicious (you know that if the cheapest item on the menu is good, then the rest of the menu will be up to standard). The lunchbox was a generous portion, consisting of sweet n sour pork, chinese veg, spicy-vinegar potatoes (Tudou si/Cu Liu Tu Dou Si), beef, a fried egg and rice. Unfortunately, the decor and ambiance was not very inviting, so I wouldn't go for a sit-down. Looking forward to trying out more of their menu items!

Venue is very simple and small, but the food is damn good. I have seen several Asian families eat here, which I always take as a sign of quality and authenticity. If you're in the mood for some great, tasty flavours, start with anything of the Top 10 list. I LOVE the general chicken.
Dayne Williams
Grabbed some take out from here last night. The General chicken to be specific as many of the reviews said it was amazing.....they were right. It's seriously tasty but I would definitely consider sharing with someone because it takes richness to a new level. I'd be impressed with the person who can pack that away in entirety. Anyways I haven't sat down there to eat but highly recommend for some authentic Chinese food.

The good: waitress was absolutely fantastic, soup (beef noodle) came in a frankly enormous bowl and was delicately spiced without being too salty or spicy. Beef in the soup was juicy and soft. We had General Chicken as well which was F'ing amazing!

The bad: the soup noodles were actually spaghetti. Not cool. It works but it's heavy.

Overall: brilliant little hole in the wall. 8/10 would binge on soup again.

The first time I ordered take-aways from Chuck Yangs, we had the chow mein which was far too salty so I was reluctant to go back but I went with my family recently and enjoyed the Singaporean Noodles with prawns. The dish was not too spicy but tasty. The only downside was that it took quite a while for us to receive our dishes but the owner said that there was only one chef available that evening.

This really tiny venue (only 4 tables max. 20 people with wife at front of house and husband/partner in the kitchen). tucked away off Campground Road, is a little gem IF you are prepared to take a chance. I say this because it fills up fast (I pre-booked but never got asked) and they cater for the take-away crowd as well. Having said that, our food took no time at all to arrive - although we did have to cajole for a glass of wine (R20/glass whereas a bottle costs R65,00 - do the math). The choice of white wine is limited to Columbar so maybe take your own. The portions are huge (don't order rice separately, as it comes included) and very, very tasty.I'll definitely go back to savour this rather quirky eating house in southern suburbs, especially to try again the spring rolls, which are crisp and he filling superb - and, oh yes, also filling in themselves.

Probably one of the best Chinese meals I've ever had. We were a party of 4 that shared egg fried rice, sweet and sour chicken, egg foo yong and beef on oyster sauce. Although i didn't try the egg foo young, the beef oyster sauce was absolutely delicious - soft beef cooked to perfection and yummy! The sweet and sour chicken was also very good...light (not too sweet) and not in puffy coated balls. Just really good food that was really tasty. My new favourite takeaway spot!
Bruce Wilson
Absolutely amazingly delicious food! Coriander Beef, General Chicken and Sweet and Sour Pork are the best we've ever tasted. If we lived in CT we'd be here every week.
Jonathan Hugo Pienaar
We go back regularly for one dish - the General Chicken. It really is that good. Crispy stir-fried chicken in a sticky barbecue sauce that is just unique. Order rice separately.

The décor reminds me of Commissioner st. in Joeys (going back to the old Chinatown of the 80s/90s) -- i.e. none whatsoever. But that doesn't matter, because the food is great. The 3-cup (or is it 4-cup?) chicken is spicy-hot, but not unbearably so - goes well with a beer. Side dishes of pak choi or other chinese veggies are always good. Prices are reasonable.

But try the General Chicken. It will make you salute.
Karine Dequeker
Great Chinese food in a very basic setting as it should be! We had brown beef and chicken cashew with rice and Chinese greens. Service is fast and polite. No descent wine to drink which is downfall but you can takeaway!

Had my birthday lunch at Chuck Yang's today. My second visit made to feel like family.Served some of the special dishes prepared for the family for Chinese New Year tonight. My daughter in law who was with us is Taiwanese and I have been to Taiwan on numerous occasions no doubt this is as good as it gets.Still licking my fingers 5 hours later.

A hidden gem with superb food and excellent service. We had the beef noodle soup, huge portion and our friends had the beef in oyster sauce and egg foo yung, we will definitely be back

We've been going to Chuck Yang's ever since it opened in Rondebosch. On few occasions we've taken friends here and every single one of them loved it. The place is nothing fancy but the food is great. My personal favourite is the General Chicken and it seems that a lot of people like it too.

We decided to try this place whilst visiting Cape Town. We ordered two vegetarian dishes - a stir fry pok choi and a tofu dish. Both were very average. They have a lot of room for improvement.

Been going to chucks ever since he was in Monte Vista. Never a bad meal. Best Chinese I have ever had. You will never regret a visit, and will be hooked thereafter.

I recently realized how important it is to have a go-to good Chinese takeout spot and have been on the hunt ever since. Yesterday I found the place at Chuck Yang's! It's a small place with quite a variety on the menu but the things we ordered were so good! We had the general chicken which is their best seller and you have to taste it to know why. The fried rice and sweet and sour pork are also so good. The prices aren't bad for the portion size you get as we had more than enough for lunch the next day.
Lee
Most consistent, authentic Chinese in Cape Town! A little unassuming gem. Been coming here for years and never been disappointed. Don't forget to order a Tsing Tsoa Chinese beer!!
Hannah T3
There is only a few good Chinese places in Cape Town (except my home of course :P)
This is the best Chinese place in Southern Suburb! This is authentic Taiwanese style of cooking. The kind of food that you will get as if you are eating in a Chinese household. The only reason it is not getting 5/5 is the decor, but then again most Chinese restaurants don't focus too much on the decor... (something needs to be remedied...)
Pebble
SUBLIME authenticity, super fresh & tasty, Taiwanese Owners & Chef, so good I'll be back with friends. Saw their tiny hole in the wall sign, and on a whim, knew this is a place to meet. Thank you for making my "taste bud" week!!i'm almost scared to share how delicious this experience has been - I may not find place next time they are THAT FANTASTIC! Oh my word this was amazing!!
Padi Mouse
Best Chinese take out I have ever had! Always filled with fresh veggies and the sweet and sour sauce they use is not luminous pink. The Singapore noodles are my favorite, packed with prawns, but have enjoyed all the meals we have had from Chuck Yang's.
Denny Mo
They have a special lunch box special that goes for around R60, has 3 side dishes and a chop with some rice, budget meals in a Taiwanese style.
