Review Common Ground Cafe - Rondebosch

Murray Armstrong
Great cosy cafe with beautiful view over The Rondebosch common towards Devils peak. A bit bias- it’s also my church venue 😁

Common Ground Cafe is situated at the Common Ground Church premises opposite the Rondebosch Common. The restaurant is quaint and unassuming. Seating is both inside and outside on the balcony overlooking the Common. The food is honest and tasty. From breakfast to lunch the small menu caters to most tastes. Staff are friendly and helpful. Well priced.

Value for money in a very good quiet setting. Good for groups that want to "speak" to each other and have a good conversation. Food was fresh and tasty with excellent service.

You wouldn't expect this place to stand out but take Origin's seasonal blend, couple it with talented baristas and well… eureka. The manager has struck a good balance between making you feel welcome, remembering you by name and giving you plenty of room to bury your nose in your laptop.

Great views of Table Mountain. Lovely coffee. Very friendly staff who were happy to demonstrate drawing pictures in coffee cream.

Common Ground cafe is a great place to have a breakfast meeting!! I recommend the French toast - on ciabatta bread and served with lots of bacon and fried banana!

Amazing views, and good menu . Prices are affordable but the place is not easy to find. Would go back now I know where it is, to enjoy relaxing on the wide verandas with that view!

Lovely views from this casual spot. The menu caters for all tastes and the coffee is excellent. Family friendly.

Delicious food (arguably the best Eggs Benedict in town!), fantastic views and great service. Secure parking on the premises is a bonus.

Excellent coffee and breakfast. Lovely cosy little spot with a great view of the mountain. Well priced.

This unassuming cafe has top 5 coffee in Cape Town, and the number 1 latte art, not to mention great views of the mountain.

A definitely favourite place to meet, have something and catch up with your work while sipping your coffee. And the view is a bonus.

Delicious sandwiches and coffees here. It can get quite packed but service usually remains pretty quick and the food is worth it. The balcony also has a lovely view of the mountain, and they even have board games available for "awkward first dates!" A great cafe for a quick and easy coffee or light meal.

Great coffee and service that is always on point.
Lots of smiles and that welcoming feeling as soon as you sit down.
If you are feeling indulgent there are some lovely pastries and other baked goods on offer.

Worth a visit if you are catching up with a friend or family member in the area

Lovely cafe with a more-than-lovely view! Went to this cafe for breakfast on the way somewhere during the week, expecting a fairly mediocre experience. The place was semi-full, but with not much of an atmosphere. We sat outside to enjoy the warm morning and the view. Staff were friendly enough and the food was well made. Nothing screamed amazing, but I must disagree with what I've heard about this place- it's really not as bad as I thought it would be. The food was satisfying, well made, and overall a good experience. I would definitely pop in there again with a friend to admire the view and have a decent breakfast that doesn't break the bank! Quiet gem right by the Rondebosch Common.

I come here just for the view. True to its name, it faces the sprawling Common. Creamy scrambled egg breakfasts and coffee are my favourite items. I've never had lunch or cake but they all look good. A perfect spot to work or meet a friend and waiters are attentive

Went on a Sunday - Unadvisable. Crazy busy kids bible people. Poor service. Breakfast quality was poor. Had to ask for sauces and cutlery. Will not go again.

Popped in here while trying to kill some time. I really like the setup. It's functional, clean, neat and has a great view of the inside of the church and also the common. Wasn't impressed with the service. Came in, sat down and waited to be served. It seemed clear the waiters didn't see us come in so after a while I walked over to get their attention. I placed our coffee order and asked for a meal menu. I later walked over to the cake table and asked about what was available, if they had any muffins ( I didn't see any, thought maybe they had at the back) the waiters didn't seem interested to assist as they were all sitting on the couch on their cell phones and in conversation, and only 1 of them looked up and said everything that's available was on the table. I just expected a bit more, especially because, in general, patrons are expected to tip for service, which I wasn't really getting. Something to think about. The coffee itself was ok. Latte art was really amazing!!! Carrot cake was also REALLY amazing and if I do go back it would purely be because I'd like some more carrot cake. Fairly priced menu.

Decided to give them a try after hearing about it. The dining area is nice but our waitress was unfriendly and unsmiling. I had a red flat white which was okay, my friend enjoyed his chocochino.

For mains my sister and I both had an eggs Florentine - too much bread and tomato, the spinach was undercooked but the hollandaise sauce was good and the eggs well poached. My friend had an open croissant, he liked it but it became too rich because of the buttery croissant. The bacon was done well.

Overall, quite an average experience here with the service being my largest put off. I could be swayed to visit again but I wouldn't go back out of my own.

Easy to access in the morning. Great, friendly service. Superb coffee. A delicious "farmers" omelette. And one of my favourite views in the world ... UCT ... Seen from across the common, nestled against the mountain. Do yourself a favour ... I certainly will be doing so frequently!

Best cupcakes. Awesome view of the common and the mountain. Lots of laughter and chatting. Friendly staff. I really recommend common ground for breakfast with friends as I've only ever had delicious food. For a long time my dad would meet other cyclists there after a ride and he's always had positive feedback too.

Delicious flat whites and an amazing eggs Benedict. Love it when a restaurant does soft-poached eggs correctly! The view is lovely and it's a great breakfast spot. It's a bonus that it's close to Rondebosch Commons for a post-Parkrun breakfast on a Saturday! Service was initially good and fast, but towards the end it felt like I was forgotten - possibly because I was seated outside? Having said that, service was friendly throughout.

It was the second time visiting for breakfast. Really beautiful views over looking Rondebosch common and the mountains. The coffee and red cappuccinos (and all the hot beverages to be honest) are really good! The food is really delicious and it really fulls you up! I would recommend the Bacon and egg crossiant (no picture - I was too eager to dig in). And The farm style breakfast was generous and honestly the best baked beans I have ever tasted!
The service was a bit slow for me, even though it was really quiet, but because of the laid back and relaxed atmosphere, it didn't bother us too much.
Will be visiting again soon :)

Decent coffee and a nice atmosphere. The service was very slow though, from taking orders to bringing the coffee and even trying to pay. If you're going for a quick coffee, perhaps not your best bet.

Best eggs benedict I have ever had! Coffee is amazing too and has a nice view of the Rondebosch Common and mountain. Service could be a bit faster (reason for bot giving 5 stars) but definitely by go to place for eggs bene!

Had the most delicious New York cheese cake here - and their chicken burgers are always delicious too!
