Best Chinese I have had in a very long time, nice portions, fresh and good ingredients. Wonton soup to die for
Had crispy beef and beef black bean both with egg fried rice - aaaahmazing!!! It could be one of the best Chinese places I’ve tried in JHB and not that expensive
Looking for tasty, budget friendly Chinese food? This is your place. Call ahead for a takeout as there is limited seating. My favourite is the prawn stir fried rice. One portion can definitely feed two people. Highly recommend this place.
A diamond in the rough, you’ll find this gem tucked away in the Shepherd Market on Jan Smuts.
The owner is present, welcoming and attentive
The atmosphere is laid back and informal, there is very little sitting space as most individuals order to go
Their menu is quite extensive and offers a host of pork, chicken, prawn and beef options
For starters we had their spring rolls, which are 4 per portion and quite large in size (ideal for sharing) and for mains, my mother had their Sweet & Sour Chicken “The Number Two”, while I opted for the Crispy Chicken and Rice “The Number Five”. This planned out to be some of the best Crispy Chicken I’ve tasted in a while.
Makes for a great takeaway if Chinese is what you’re feeling for. I’d recommend their sweet & sour chicken or beef chow mein, those are my favourites. Food has been consistent and service is very good.

One of my favorite little gems in the Parks area. I've never been disappointed by the food at this divine little Chinese restaurant.
The sticky beef is to die for and the black bean and the oyster sauce are a must try.
Secluded in a parking lot with one other restaurant, yung Chen has a food truck kind of vibe and a hole in the wall ambience... But man oh man do they make good food. The yung Chen special, crispy calamari, won tons, springrolls and cashew nut beef are just a few of my favourites . Food is freshly prepared and they are always busy. The old man that takes your order makes me wish he was my grandfather and he always calls me young lady which I kind of love. Prices are super reasonable (between R60 and R80 for the prawns), and I feel very new Yorky when I go there. All that's missing is the American Chinese take away boxes. It's a gem you can easily overlook but please don't.
They make the best crispy beef in Johannesburg. It is more for take away as there are only about 5 tables for sit down. This is more for convenience than actual sales. Also had the bokchoi, some noodles and chicken cashew. Way too much for 3 as the portions are a decent size
Delicious chinese food. Every bite of their chow mein is flavorful and the consistency of their noodles are the best! The cashew nut chicken and chow mein (all variants) are my regular choices. Service is always pleasant and fast.
Some of the best Chinese that I have had anywhere. I have pretty much tried the entire menu and it is always a pleasure ordering food from this little gem. The crispy beef and salt & pepper prawns are amazing.
After reading great reviews about Yung Chen, I decided to take everyones advice and try it for dinner last night. Its definitely more of a take-away spot and best to phone with your order in advance as they get busy.
Most people recommended the Crispy Beef and Beef in Black Bean Sauce, which I tried and have to agree are absolute winners. Also tried the Chicken Curry and Sweet & Sour Pork. Dishes were well seasoned, vegetables weren't overcooked and food wasn't oily. Really delicious!
Definitely the best chinese food in Johannesburg, geared more towards take away than sit down. But I have eaten there many time and its fine if a bit cramped. The best has to be the crispy chicken and the black bean beef.
I love this place for consistently good, quick Chinese takeaways.
The owners are very friendly and accommodating, and they seem to have many regulars. The portions are big enough to be two meals.
Best Chinese I've had in Joburg.
Little Chinese take away with all the normal items you would expect. The portions were generous and things weren't not too oily. Definitely my choice in the area when I have a Chinese takeaway craving.
100% the BEST Chinese food in Johannesburg.
Dinner tonight (30 August 2016) was so good as always. The service is always really good and the food is always made fresh.
Crispy beef with egg fried rice is always a winner with a little bit of chilli.
The chicken chow mein was also really really good. (No veg- picky eaters haha)
Recommendation: if you're planning on getting take aways - order in advance. When they're busy the food can take a while. However, worth the wait! 🍜
The service is always quick and friendly at any Yung Chen. The crispy beef meal for one is a real winner when you're craving Chinese food. Very affordable and generous portion size too.
Family run Chinese take-away. The owner is friendly and service is snappy. Food is tasty, fresh and so good. You have to try the crispy beef and black bean beef. Food is well-priced and portions are generous.

One of the best Chinese take-outs in Johannesburg. Quick, friendly service & divine dishes! Friends are always impressed with their food & quick preparation time.
The restaurant is clean and appealing, especially given the small space they occupy. I highly recommend the crispy beef & chicken, & of course, their cashew nut chicken - one of many healthy dishes they offer.
After searching for what felt like an eternity, finding good Chinese food in the Northern suburbs was proving to be a fool's errand. Thankfully a Zomato search led me to this little gem. Yung Chen may be unassuming (in fact it's quite easy to drive down Jan Smuts Ave without even noticing Yung Chen, I did several times!) but they serve the freshest, tastiest Chinese food around. They're not really geared for a sit-down meal as the seating area is small, so I suggest grabbing a quick takeaway instead. The chicken chow mein and crispy beef are my personal favourites.
Definately one of the best Chinese spots in joburg. Lovely, modest little spot in a quite little complex. Prices are also so reasonable, which is quite refreshing. Really helpful manager, helps you make your decision. Food was literally ready in 5 minutes and tasted really really good. My new go to Chinese spot in jozi without a doubt.
Was in the mood for Chinese so came here for a quick meal as this was the highest rated Chinese place on Zomato. We started off with some veggie spring rolls- really enjoyed it, crisp and not oily, very tasty with the dipping sauce. We then had the wantons- it was a really big portion and had a pork filling. Tried the crispy chicken with rice- really great flavours! Rounded off with some coconut juice this was a good meal. It is aimed at takeaways- but they do have a few tables in and out side
Best Chinese take out in Jozi! They use authentic fresh ingredients i.e. Chinese cabbage and mushrooms. My absolute favourite dish is the salt and pepper prawns, it's totally addictive. The chop suey is also great!
Finally a decent Chinese takeaway, offering fresh, delicious food at very reasonable prices. Delicious sweet and sour porky, tasty soups etc. They deserve the support that they are clearly getting
Just had takeaways from Yung Chen recommended to my fiancé and then checked the reviews on Zomato. Very glad we did and also took the tip and phoned in the ordered ahead.
We had the crispy beef which was excellent and with that slight bite of ginger. The black pepper beef was fantastic and very tender, very flavourful. Loved the salt & pepper prawns. The chop suey was great and one of the best I've had. Amazing little takeaway! It's right up there with my favourite Chinese restaurant Fong Mei.
The portions are large.
😊😊😊 - service
😊😊😊😊 - food
Enjoy getting takeaways from this little spot. Some of the best Chinese around our area, not a frozen vegetable mix type of place. The crispy beef is a must try! Portions are large so great for sharing.
Sometimes all you need is Asian persuasion. Yung Chen is small outlet in Craighall with some of the greatest Chinese Jo’burg has to offer. They have a big menu with big flavours. They also include everyone’s favourites – Spring Rolls, Chow Main, Sweet & Sour Chicken, Twice Fried Beef (this is my favourite ever). This is a hidden gem that deserves all the business. Did I mention the Chef as won some awards as well. Well priced and large portions. Trust me on this one.
Always love the food here! The portion is big and filling and the food comes quite fast too! Their fried won ton such a good dish! Especially dipped in the red sweet sauce.
Absolute gem of a Chinese restaurant. Cant believe I've gone the last 21years not knowing it existed. Definitely out does the Red Chamber any day. Sticky beef is life changing, and don't even get me started on the Salt and Pepper Prawns. Although it may be small and not much to look at, it wouldn't make a difference; you could be on the Great Wall Of China and be so indulged in this food the surroundings wouldn't even matter.
This is an awesome little take-away joint for delicious chinese food!! Their prawn chips sell out quickly but are worth buying if they have in stock. I think their chow mein dishes are some of the best I've tasted but I wasn't blown away by their chow faan at all.
Order before you arrive as they get REALLY busy and you often have to wait quite a while!
Been to China and dreamed of Yung Chen food. Nothing quite beats it.
It started off as a small restaurant on Commissioner street in town, known as Yung Chen Noodle Den. Since I was 4 I have been hooked.
Favorites:
Not on the menu but ask John and he'll make it for you.
Woh Mein - Chicken Noodle soup with Bak Choi.
😍😍😍
Chinese food that is fresh and delicious. I tried the favourites, crispy beef and oyster sauce beef, recommended by the previous reviewers and it did not disappoint. The . The dishes were flavourful and the vegetables used in the dishes fresh with still a bit of crunch to it.Looking forward to trying the other dishes on the menu.
Went here last week. A fantastic meal was had! The restaurant is more of a takeaway place so I wouldn't really recommend sitting down. But the food more than makes up for the lack of decoration or anything. The owners were not very thankful for the comments because I think they've heard that there food is good enough. I defiantly recommend the food here
Great Chinese food. Some of the best I've eaten in Johannesburg and I've been to the China of Africa, Cyrildene, multiple times.
Simple menu, good portions, tasty food, reasonable prices. What more can one ask for.
It's in Shepherd Market on Jan Smuts. Drive slow, or you might miss it.
We ordered Black pepper chicken, springrolls crispy beef, and chicken fried rice. The spring rolls were ok, but the pepper chicken and crispy beef were delicious. And so was the fried rice.
The place is very small, so you'd be better off with a takeaway that you can enjoy in the comforts of your home.
Perfect joint for a quick Chinese cuisine fix. Will surely visit multiple times and cycle through the menu.
The restaurant is good. The interior is not so good. Service is really appreciable. The food was good in taste and cost was less. We ordered the chopsey which was very tasty.
Best Hong Kong Cantonese food in JHB!! Incredible flavours, order: crispy beef, fried rice, beef in oyster sauce with bak choi. Good portion size. Absolute hidden gem
What a delightful little spot! From being greeted with a grin and advice on what to order to the great menu (with colour photographs) my tastebuds were intrigued...And the taste certainly lived up to expectation!

The best Chinese in Johannesburg hands down. Everything is super fresh and taste delicious. If you want to experience some authentic oriental cuisine definitely stop by this place the food is priced right!!🈳🈸🈺🈷🈶🈲🈵🉐㊙️🉑㊗️🈺🈂🈯️💹
Located in a quaint little square near Hyde Park. Definitely the best Chinese take away I've had. Great quality, awesome flavour. The noodles are fantastic. Portions are big. Ideally get a few dishes and share. Hubby and I tried the spring rolls (small but nyummy), the beef chop suey with noodles and chicken black bean with rice. I recommend both dishes and will definitely be back to try more. So happy to have found this little gem.
Yum Chen is the family's bespoke Chinese take out joint. I dunno, for me Chinese is Chinese - get yourself a bit of chow mein, sweet & sour prawns, the crispy beef, chicken corn soup & of course a few bow ties ....and happy family. By the way, the owner is a funny guy...always fun to chat with.
My favourite Chinese takeaway in Joburg! :) This charming little spot is tucked away in Shepherd Market - in fact, you would probably drive right past if you weren't looking for it.
Food is absolutely amazing, well priced and the portions are very substantial.
I personal go for the sweet 'n sour pork, beef chop suey or cashew nut chicken. Everything's a winner, really.
The man behind the counter, the owner I'm assuming, is also great. His English isn't too good, but he always serves with a smile.
If you're in Joburg, love Chinese and haven't been here before...shame on you! :P
I am always happy with the food that I get from Yung Chen. Their food is not greasy and oily. If you want proper amazing Chinese food then this is the place to get take aways from !
Low-key, simple, but just good quality, delicious Chinese takeaways. Have just never had a bad experience with them. They're friendly and quick, and the food is amazing.
This is about as good as a Chinese takeaway can get. The owners are so friendly and sweet! Came in to get a takeaway and their little place is cold that they said I must wait in my car and they'll bring it to me. So delicious too! Coming back in the summer to this little hole in the wall to sit down :)
The best simple Chinese food in JHB. I have been to some
"Real" Chinese restaurants where I have no idea what exotic thing I'm getting, but Yung Chen has a simple to understand great menu. Never had anything I didn't love, and I have tried most of the menu. Try the Yung Chen Noodles or beef chow mein. Amazing. The only shame is that it's too small to have a big dinner party there and food isn't quite as good at the one in Melrose.
This little place is an absolute gem! I've eaten here a few times and have never been disappointed. The crispy beef is absolutely delicious and the owner is such a friendly man. High recommended to curb that Chinese craving!
Yung Chen is an awesome place, my friend enjoys Asian Cuisine so we always go to a Chinese Restaurant. This place is so cute, its tucked in on the side of the road, if you didn't know about it, you would miss it. It is on a busy main road, conveniently located to many businesses. They have a variety of plates to choose from and freshly prepared. I would recommend this any time -I find their food authentic - especially judging from the ingredients used. I had the chow mein (vegetable stir fry), which was absolutely amazingly awesome - do yourself a favour and try this, its their number 4 - its stupendously good - my friend had fried rice with prawns and steak - very generous but I didn't try it - I just so enjoyed my dish... and so filling :-) (I didn't need the noodles itself even)
I love stopping by here on my way home from work when I need a fix of Chinese food! Their meals for one are generous enough for two, making this a good value choice. Their black bean sauce is good, as is their cashew nut chicken.
Yung Chen with it's fresh and reasonably priced Chinese food in such a comfortable setting, to me, should be a hidden gem. The only downside for me is that, sadly, with the load shedding as it is right now, the Shepherd Market complex does not have a generator to keep it going. This is a lovely little spot for takeaways or sit in if you can find a quiet corner table. *Recommendation: I am a big fan of their Jasmine tea (I actually bought a box from them), and I would definitely recommend it with your meal of choice!
When you think of Chinese food, many people immediately think of grease and food loaded with tartrazine. Young Chen is anything but this! The food is outstanding and full of flavour - no grease in sight! I would highly recommend their shrimp dish.

The absolute best (and authentic) Chinese spot in the area. I would recommend this spot for takeaways, there are seated tables, but just a few seats and they're usually full. Best noodles, great portion sizes and the bak choi is crunchy, garlicky and probably my favourite dish here.
Still the best Chinese take away joint in the whole of Johannesburg! Fast and food is always delicious and filled with flavour! In all 5 years that I have ordered from Yung Chen, their prices and portions have never changed. Crispy beef and black bean beef are a must try! Remember however, they are closed on Mondays
If you are looking for a more than decent chinese restaurant you have come to the right place. This is a family run business which was originally run in town and out of Edenvale by the owner Johnny. Their branch in Melrose is also run by the owner. They have really tried to stand out from the rest of chinese restaurants in the region through their menu and branding.
Even though the place might not be the best looking the food makes up for it. For vegetarians try the spicy salt and pepper tofu or the egg foo yung. Their noodles are very well prepared and tasty. Meat lovers will enjoy the crispy beef or sweet and sour chicken. Since you are already here make your way to the fridge for a lovely refreshing chinese ice tea.
Best Chinese cuisine in the Northern Suburbs by a long shot. Firendly Staff too!
My favourite Chinese take away spot, no doubt about it! The food is so damn delicious, it is always fresh and the service is brilliant. It is a bit on the pricey side, but you are paying for good quality food! Everything on the menu is yummy! They are always busy, which is a good sign! Expect to wait 20-30 minutes.
My favourite dishes, however are the crispy beef/chicken the ginger sauce and the crispy batter are just right, their black bean noodles are amazing, the spring rolls are good and the black pepper noodles are also the bomb. I'd suggest ordering with a bunch of people and sharing, the more dishes the better, but it is rich!
