Review Kai Thai - Randburg

Excellent food and service. We drive all the way there from cresta because the ones by us closed down but it's still worth it. Love their spring rolls dipped in peanut sauce and the green curry xx

My fiancee and I call this our "happy place". We go there twice a month and have never had bad service. The food is simply delicious and the atmosphere is warm and friendly. See you soon!

Delicious Thai food! Fast service. Huge selection of classic dishes. Very affordable. Definitely worth a try!

The massage was excellent but the reflexology they wrote on pamphlet????. They need a properly trained reflexologist

Kai Thai makes great food. I have only had take aways from here but haven't been dissapointed.

Don't eat at this restaurant, the staff steal your cell phone while you eat!!!!!!!!!! She even answered the phone when my service provider called her.

The soup was appropriately spicy and delicious. I also had my husband’s chicken wings which had flavor. Yet the presentation was so bad. He didn’t enjoy them. I did. ☺️
The ambiance needs some work, the decor looks really old fashioned and stuck in the ‘90

The food here just not as it used to be. Cheaper cuts of meat, older veg, not very enjoyable and prices are hefty considering. I'll not waste time eating here again.

So pn hill. The decor is still great which is why I gave ot a 2 but rhe rest is sadly lacking.
Service 1 non existent despite only 3 tables in the restaurant being occupied and at least vietnamese spring rolls were very disappointing lacked any form of presentation, flavour and quality .

Main course equally disappointing my pad thai medium had hardly any spice, no peanuts and the size of the pieces of vegetables were huge. Chunks of cabbage and cauliflower. It looked as bad as ot tasted.

I send my dish away bareky touched , the waitress asked if we enjoyed the food to which I replied not really. This did not evoke a reply. Feom being a favorite we will now not be back

So sad that so little places realises the importance of creating a staff that is obsessed with customer centricity for is this not the very first experience that a diner experience when entering an establishment, unfortunately for Kai Thai they missed that one completely, after passing the 3rd waitress only then was I acknowledged, so not a great start.

I did not opt to dine at the actual place but the decor is pretty decent and fits into the type of cuisine served. I opted for the chicken pad thai with mediun heat. So here is breakdown of the score:

Service: 2/5 as mentioned above, seriously lacking and needs an overhaul.
Food: 3.5/5 it is fast food type of food but actually very good, there are individual components done very well that ultimately result in a great overall dish, the individual flavours could be recognised but added to overall cohesions and had the perfect balance of salty, sour, heat with just a hint of sweetness. I especially loved the fried shrimp and peanuts that added huge flavour and texture.
Value for money: 4/5 the size the dish is really decent and for the money paid i though it was good value.

We normally love Kai Thai Olivedale’s food. Especially the crispy duck. But they are now starting to cut costs by keeping the prices the same but reducing quantity and using cheaper ingredients. Very irritating and disappointing. From being a regular I will now not go back.

Have been going here for 7 years, and have seen a slow deterioration. The floors are greasy, the windows are dirty, the menu's are falling apart and sticky and table cloths are stained. The staff from the spa are backwards and forwards through the restaurant collecting and disposing of clean and dirty water in open tupperware containers whilst we were eating. The food was ok
My boyfriend and I went on a date here. The waitress wasn’t sure on some of the dishes and we had to pay for rice which should come with the stir fry? My stir fry was a bit bland but my boyfriends crispy pork was good. We like the ambiance but some music in the background would be nice.

I prefer the old Kai Thai before the revamp. Nice atmosphere with friendly staff. Favorite dish is the angry duck with extra chilli. Much prefer the one in Monte Casino

Kai Thai in Fontinbleu is way better, staff friendlier and food tastier, this branch at All Saints has nothing to write home about except the 200 rand full body massage that my wife raves about
They have (I think) changed owners or management so will go back to try some takeaways soon to give the benefit of the doubt so let's see what the outcome is
Dark Chocolate Honey
This is such a lovely place. The ambience is quite relaxed with Thai music in the background - beautiful space, too. (They have frequent specials for full body massages as well, just by the way)

The service was nothing to write home about, they could be a lot friendlier.

We ordered the chilli cashew chicken stir fry with noodles and with rice. Great meal, I thoroughly enjoyed. My friend wanted juice (any fruit juice), and they had none in stock which was quite disappointing.

Overall it was pretty good experience, I would definitely return.

Walked in as I usually do Kai Thai in Fontainebleau as me and my wife have 3 kids and hardly get time to go out and Kai Thai is 600mt from my house.
Nr1. I was a bar man for over 6 years all over some of the best restaurants in Europe, Ibiza Switzerland Spain Ireland Italy ...
When you'r Martini Bianco sec is mixed with water I will notice.
N2 if your menu states a price for a item that's what the client is obligated to pay does not matter if your new menu has not arrived yet. You don't update your system garp or whatever you are using .
Nr 3 please check the picture out of my mixed Martini with water.
Last but not least I had to leave my wife In the Kai Thai drive home to get more money.... We used to go to this place that was the last time.

I've had kai Thai as a regular favourite for years. The curries were always great. But since the new ownership standards have changed and dropped. Ordering was not easy since the menu online isn't what they keep in store. DON'T order the crispy pork it's horrid. And whatever fried noodle dish they gave us tasted burnt. Only thing that was enjoyed were the prawn spring rolls (Even they were undercooked)
So sad and such waste of money
Lydia 'Lydz' Alford
Ordered Phad Thai Chicken to go. Service was slow and unenthusiastic. Something in my food kept tasting like fish. Couldn't identify what it was. Either they're cooking chicken in the same pan as fish or they're using fish oil. Absolutely disgusting. If I wasn't starving, I would have thrown it away and went somewhere else.
Leigh
Ordered Sweet and Sour Crispy Pork as a take-away. I didnt really enjoy it at all. The pork was very fatty, the sweet and sour sauce was packed with veggies that shouldnt be included in a Sweet and Sour Sauce. Their portions are way too big. I thought it was over priced for the quality of food.

This is my go to place when my mouth needs to be transported back to Thailand. I wouldn't say it is the very best Thai food in town but I love it and this is why. The staff at Kai Thai are always super friendly regardless of whether I am grabbing a takeaway or dining there. They have weekday specials. Their food comes out quickly. And quite frankly their food is tasty and unpretentious. I love their massaman curry (I get the beef) I am usually not one to order chicken cashew because I find it boring but I ordered this out of pure decisiveness after a long day and I must admit, it was great. I really enjoy the starter platter as well. I will continue to used this as my quick comfort food place after a long day.

Always have a great experience at this branch, love the fact that I can go for a massage next door.

This is a convenient centre and located across the olivesdale clinic.

The spring rolls are great, along with the noodle dishes.

I am so disappointed with the way this restaurant has gone down I have been going there for years with fantastic food and service but since the management has taken over it has gone from a hero to a zero. Order chicken green curry it had hardly any chicken and it is now a very weird green color which looks gross, with a lack of flavoring not to mention the sand which I found in it.

The lady working the till was more concerned in chewing her gum than help me.

I will never go there again, and I wouldn't recommend them to anyone.
Diane Woodhouse
I am most disappointed, since they have changed management, there is no flavor in the food and they used green food coloring for the green thai curry, looked disgusting, also barely any chicken and vegetables, I have been to this branch many times as I live in the area and I am not sure I will be back in a hurry... Best they bring there quality of there food back!!
Tyron Hunter
Great simple Thai food. Stick to the curries and stir fry dishes. Crispy pork is a favourite of mine.
Also make sure to try the savoury mince with lettuce leaves as a starter - very yummy.
Quite cosy inside, but I could do without the pan-pipe music...
Candi Make Up
Often the little simple restaurants make for a lovely night out. Delicious angry duck and Kanonkop Cape Blend. Good price, 2min from home, no frills just jummy food. Life is good.

G and I LOVE their mild red curry. I think we have returned for take aways so often that the staff can repeat my order before I walk in.
Aside from the red curry, we love trying all of the noodle dishes and while the presentation is not terribly pretty, they all taste incredible! Another fav is the hot and sour soup. The decor and ambience is pretty and effective, even if the tables are a little cramped/small.
A great taste of Thailand and great service.
Anandie
This spot is just so amazing. The food, especially the curries (try panang, musuman, green, yellow...any one). We usually have the savoury mince starter and then share a curry with jasmine rice or noodles. The staff greets us by name, and it is very relaxed.

I visited Kai Thai and placed an order for two takeaway dishes. Upon arrival at home, one of the dishes was not the correct meal. I telephoned the restaurant to alert them that I was going to drive back, in order to collect the correct meal. I then waited another 15 minutes as they had not prepared the corrected replacement meal. No apologies were offered at all and the meal was shoved at me over the counter. This is the second time that this has happened to me at this particular restaurant. The fact that staff’s family/friends sit outside the restaurant enjoying cigarettes, beverages and supermarket snacks does not bode well with me either. The meals are not worth the attitude of the staff. I won’t be back.
Bianca
The waiter or manager lady was not very friendly. Just took our order hastily and didn't even say hello. She looked very rude and the restaurant was quiet, so it's not like she was in a rush. I ordered a black bean rice noodle but I'm pretty sure I didn't find any blackbeans in mine... Disappointing. I will go back to try them again

December 2016
Veg spring rolls with peanut satay sauce .... absolutely delicious! Crispy pastry, yum veg inside and the peanut satay sauce ...

This time I decided I really want that duck ... and I want him angry! So we both ordered the Angry Duck ... Hein with rice, I with noodles. (I think rice is the better choice.) Both of us ordered it hot, but it was not 'blowing steam out of your ears' hot at all. But soooo good. Portions still big, so we took it home for dinner.

Deep-fried ice cream ... They 'wrap' sponge cake around a ball of ice cream and deep-fry it. It is really not too sweet at all!!!! But sooooo yummmy!

October 2015
We have not visited a Kai Thai branch in years! This branch in Olivedale has a lovely decor and the choice of sitting on the patio or inside.

I ordered Chicken Green Curry with rice. It was really flavorsome and good.

But Hein ordered the Angry Duck ... deboned pieces of duck cooked in a red curry sauce with ginger and various vegetables, served with rice. Oh my goodness!!! This was really amazing!!!! And the portion was so big for R120, we could have easily shared it. The taste was just really deep, flavorsome and the veggies still a little bit crispy and yum.

Of course my eye fell on the recommended dessert option ... deep fried ice cream served with Bar One sauce. Although the outside of the ice cream wasn't crispy as I thought it would be ... it was really good! It was served with fresh strawberry slices and wasn't too sweet. The batter around the ice cream was nice and it was quite a big scoop.

Kai Thai is really worth the food and experience. The waitresses are friendly and efficient.
Lara Baigrie
Waited an hour to collect a take away I phoned in to order 20 minutes beforehand. None of the waitresses were willing to assist or knew anything about the order. Will not be coming back
Roxy Bruinenberg
This place makes delicious thai food! I had their chicken thai green curry which was on point, the rice was nice and fluffy and the curry was nice and hot and not over bearing and the sauce was the right consistency, we had their chicken spring rolls for starters which were light and crispy and the filling was cooked with the right amount of vegetables and the chicken was not dry, the peanut sauce is to die for and I advise everyone who goes there to try it, other dishes I would suggest would have to be their chicken cashew stir fry or their angry duck. The only down fall unfortunately is the girl manager who isn't the friendliest which is a pity because I've been told I'm not the only who agrees with this statement but the food is definitely a winner.

This is a really good Thai restaurant. The curries here are very different to Indian curries, with the emphasis of the flavour coming from coconut. The curries on the menu are all rated with little chillies, so you know what you are getting. The starters with the peanut sauce are to die for, the crispy duck curry is awesome. Nice ambience in the restaurant, and all in all it makes for a very good dining experience.
Lisa Botha Gibbon
The food here is always lovely, with great service. I had the green chicken curry - could have been hotter, but delicious nevertheless. Wine list is limited but adequate.
Justine Fish
Okay so the place is looking a little tired and maybe needs a little revamp, but this is still one of my most favorite places to go! The green Thai curry is just to die for and is just the right heat for my taste buds. This is definitely a regular spot! Staff is very friendly too.

We have visited this restaurant several times in the past. It has been quite some time since our last visit and this last one was SUCH a disappointment (we had a take-out). The starter platter was SO bland with no taste or flavour of any kind. The peanut sauce was watered down. The pork was absolutely tasteless and overall we were totally disappointed. The Angry Duck was the only meal that I can compliment but having said that, we will not be back for another visit anytime soon.

Kai Thai, is incredible! The decor makes you feel like you are in Thailand, with the different colours and fine features, the pictures of the royal family and soft background music. The food is outstanding! I am very partial to my favourite being the Chicken Phad Thai, it is divine. The spring rolls are also delicious. A must have ia the peanut sauce that comes with the spring rolls! I would recommend this place to everyone, especially to those who are not familiar with Thai meals.
Lisa
The standards have really dropped in this branch. I get irritated when I pay a lot of money for a chicken green curry and they cannot even use fresh vegetables. The patty pans were rotten. This has happened a few times. I would rather drive to the one in Rabie street as I know it's always good and the vegetables are fresh
Sarah Connolly
Really disappointed. We normally come in and eat at the restaurant, so tonight we phoned ahead and ordered a takeaway. Firstly I ordered a chicken and a duck dish. Upon my arrival the lady gave me a pork dish. Calling out her mistake, she returned with disgusting and rude remarks. Twirling her hair (in a food restaurant) and giving me the stink eye. I don't appreciate being spoken to like a dog, as a regular customer this is not acceptable. My chicken stir fry was bland and had to add my own sauce. NEVER will I be back.

I am a big fan of the kai thai franchise so we got take away from the north riding branch as the dining area is not as welcoming as the other branches. The portion sizes we received were fantastic. All the meals ordered were flavourful and perfectly spiced. Still the best thai food in jhb.
Deepti Menon
The mince starter here is the best! Ask for extra spice if you need it like I do. Service in this brand is decent and the servers are friendly..
Tables And Thyme
You'll find the usual Kai Thai menu and the usual Kai Thai décor. The food is consistently good - great flavour, good presentation and generous portions. The service is friendly and professional.
Always great!
Lauras World
Not a hot food fan but the flavours in the mild Tom Yam Goong soup is incredible! I've had it several times and if you are on that side of town, I would recommend it!

The thai food they serve is authentic.. has great taste
Brittany
Ordered crab curry that ended up being terribly off, on calling the owner we were shocked with the way she handled the situation. In all honesty, the worst response I've ever received.

Pity as we had lovely service from Phulani
Mark Strathmore
I've dined at Kai Thai since they were a tiny restaurant in a Wendy hut on the premises of a fuel station. The consistent thing about all their restaurants is the impeccable quality of their meals. Kai in the All Saints is one of those hidden gems. Try the Gaeng Penang!
Simon Lee
Bought some take-out from this Kai-Thai yesterday evening. We had the starter platter which consisted of 2 fat home made spring roll, 2 wantons, 2 fish cakes and 2 chicken satay. The spring roll and the wantons were great but the satay was dry and the fish cake didn't taste much like fish cakes.

For mains I had the chicken pad thai which was not bad, but a little too "wet". It should be drier as per like the original ones served in Thailand. Taste wise was acceptable, plenty of meat and veggies and authentic with roasted peanuts.

The other main we had was pork green curry (which turned out to be chicken), was very flavourful and had a nice kick.

I agree with the below reviewer that the place is kinda dark and not conducive for sit-down meals.
Zoe Lansdell
I love Kai Thai's food. I'll happily go out of my way and drive to this place to pick up my take-away. But don't ask me to have my sit-down dinner here. I find this restaurant incredibly dark and gloomy and a little depressing. The decor isn't as noticeable as in other Kai Thai's because it's a little too dark. I'll keep going back to get my take-away because the food is ready quickly and the hostess is very friendly. As for sitting down and enjoying my meal there, i'll give it a miss. Look it's great value for money and the food really is amazing. The crispy pork and Pad thai are by far my favourite meals.
Food Fundi
Kai Thai is cool, there collection of eastern food is great, with some real tasty meals, and if you inclined they can get quite spicy too. I really love the starters they have on offer, and you can fill yourself up just eating all the different starter options they have availalbe. My favorite are there spring rolls which are similar to mini hot dogs then the spring rolls you normally get. The North riding branch is great, with awesome decor and a layout that makes dining intimidate and yet social, so if you looking for a good evening out I would highly recommend this restaurant.
Genevieve Meghan Van Staden
I am a huge Kai Thai fan. When I feel like Thai food, I know if I go there I can expect to get my favourite dish exactly the way I want it. It's a great level of satisfaction to be able to get your favourite meal done the perfect way every time. I am a spring roll fiend- they are so delicious! I always get some for a starter, and I always enjoy them. For mains, I really enjoy the deep fried crispy pork but my favourite of al is the crispy duck. I absolutely love a good crispy duck and the Kai Thai always delivers a yummy meal. The restaurant is well priced and a great treat! The manager is really friendly and the service is good too. The restaurant also has a great ambience! All round it is a great night out!
Juliette Sampson
I had my birthday dinner here with 20 friends. Staff and Managers were accommodating and the waiters served us efficiently. Everyone got their food hot and at the same time. Drinks flowed well and as always the food was very good. This is a firm favourite of mine. They always deliver on yummy food and good service. Not many restaurants can handle such a big table and they did very well!
Leigh Robinson
Kai Thai is one of my favorite restaurants. The ambience, service and food is always amazing. No matter what you order, you will never be disappointed.
Jacqueline Lues
Kai Thai creates a charming setting filled with Thai decor and warm, low lighting. I appreciate the menus, which include tidbits of information about Thai tradition, culture and cuisine (I read compulsively). My starter of choice is a vegetarian spring roll with the morish peanut sauce. I enjoy the 'Gaeng Pak', a dish made with vegetables, tofu, coconut milk and cashews. My preference is a mild green curry version with noodles. The service is reasonable, as is the price. The generous servings mean I usually have leftovers for the next day (and yes, the curry tastes as good, if not better). Over the years I have found the quality of the meals to be consistent - so this is a good bet for a meal with friends or to celebrate a special occasion.
Jess (jesska.co.za)
Kai Thai has got to be one of my favourite restaurants, all the branches serve delicious food, but if you go to the Olivedale branch, you have to order the Crispy Pork Ribs as a starter. These deep fried morsels may not be very waist line friendly, but they are remarkably delicious. They are served with 2 tangy dipping sauces, and are available in a starter and main portion.

On the mains side, I love the Stir Fried Black Bean (beef or chicken), I hardly order anything else. Portions are really generous, and I often leave with leftovers for lunch the next day. The prices are reasonable, and the service is quick.
