Review Ocean Basket Cresta Shopping Mall - Randburg

This was my first visit to this Ocean Basket in Cresta mall. I was quite impressed with the service. Food was delivered fast and the dishes are always the best and more than satisfying. Very well managed and friendly staff.

Has a spacious area which is very comfortable compared to being in a cramped up space. Would be great if they implemented an outside seating area. Overall an amazing OB that has great staff as well as service!

I'm only going 4 stars because the quality of all the other OBs... this one is ok but not spectacular. Food was ok. I think the renovations may have impacted the evening I was there.

Quick and friendly service, fresh and good quality food...OK, I went a little bit crazy on the garlic and chilli but it still tasted great.

Food always filling and great (if you love sea food). Just not enough place on the table for everything.

So much better than John Dorys in Cresta. Love everything about this Ocean Basket

I was invited by friends. The service was good. I had the seared salmon and it was absolutely delicious. I could easily ordered another portion!

Love it. The food was excellent and the service was fast. The staff was friendly as well. The only thing was that I found my rice was a little bland.

Always a winner for my feesh. Love the lemon butter, (ordered extra lashings of it always). Our waiter was charming and efficient.

After raising concerns with the manager of slow service it improved. Food was good. Response to complaints was good. Well Done

Ordered the salmon Mediterranean rice dish and I was pretty disappointed with the flavour and presentation. Rice was luke warm and the Mediterranean vegetables in the rice meant finely diced zucchini and carrots. Was also served a meager 3 small mussels but there was more rice than any of the other ingredients described on the menu. Please implement quality control measures so mediocre food does not get served.

I had a mediocre experience at Ocean Basket yesterday. I ordered the bonsai sushi - which was mediocre. The service was fine until my waitress had to leave, then I didn't see another waiter even though i was joined by a second person and stayed over another hour for a meeting. If I'd really been desperate I would have flagged someone down, but if someone had asked we would have had a drink which would have been a little extra sales and a tip.

After a disastrous experience at OB Cresta, a few months ago, I needed a local seafood restaurant for prawns. Because I had had good service and good prawns at other OB branches, I phoned OB head office and the Cresta branch itself, I was persuaded to take the risk and give OceanBasket Cresta, a second chance, so I booked a table.<br/>This time, the service was good (but left to top up our own wineglasses) the food was hot and the prawns were excellent.

I love ocean basket. This branch gets a low rating from me because firstly i ordered kingklip cajun style and it came plain/ unflavoured. Secondly i happened to notice they have baklava cheesecake on the menu. I was so excited. But we were so full after our meal we asked for two cheesecakes to be packed for takeaway. Our waitress said it's served with ice cream or cream but she will put cream because we're taking it home. You yourself can compare what it looks like on the menu and what we were given in our take away box. No sauce. No cream. Lastly, The waitress seemed annoyed at how much we were eating/ordering. She made a comment to a coworker in her language which I overheard and understood.

Placed in the Centre of a superbly renovated area in the heart of Cresta Centre, this OB franchise does not stray from the tested formula.<br/>The staff were efficient and the food as good as at any other OB.<br/>The shortcoming for me is the ambience and view as it’s in the middle of the mall and the view is of other shops and passers by.<br/>That said it’s trusty OB fare.

Attended a lunch here at someone else’s request. Had Dorado which was excellent. Generally happy with the experience. So why so many poor reviews? I suggest Management get their act together!!!!

First Impressions<br/>As you approach this restaurant it is a shell of what it used to be. With the change of location they have lost a lot of their customers making this look like an unwelcoming place. You have waiters outside waiting to serve someone but they have no one to serve. The waiters were very friendly and seated us quickly.<br/><br/>The Decor<br/>With the wooden chairs and cloth linen it has a feeling of a cheap restaurant but this is a mid range restaurant so the styling could be changed a bit. Although when you see the styling you immediately think of ocean basket. <br/><br/>The Menu<br/>The menu has all sorts of fish dishes that your heart desires with a good choice of desserts and drinks to accompany it.<br/><br/>The Food Itself<br/>I had the my usual choice here which is 24 prince prawns with a side of chips. The prawns were very salty this time round and seemed to over cooked as they were very dry.<br/><br/>Final Thoughts<br/>What used to be the best place to get seafood now seems to be losing its charm. Might have to seek out a new fish restaurant

We were shopping at Cresta mall on Saturday and decided to have a quick bite and get some sushi. Ocean basket Cresta proved to be terribly disappointing, the waiter seemed very disinterested and it took really long to receive our sushi. Once it arrived we had to wait even longer for the soy sauce to arrive. The sushi tasted really bad the California rolls had more cucumber than salmon in them. The salmon roses were also horrible! Won't have Sushi there again that's for sure! And quite expensive might I add for the value of product their selling.

Shocking food ... our waiter (Uncle) tried his best but alas the kitchen let him and me down .... will never set food in this particular branch again ....

Bad food and horrible service, the manager, Michael Sithole was rude and obnoxious after Pretty, the waitress got our order wrong and gave us the full deck platter when we'd ordered the platter for 2. Nearly double the price. Worst is we now had a really big platter of bad food. The manager and waitress both refused to in any way engage with the fact that the error was their's, the manager was especially unpleasant and unhelpful. So not impressed and will not be going there again.

I had the pleasure of taking my kids for lunch this past Saturday. I waiter was friendly and our order arrived timeously. Everything was delicious. Sushi was perfect and beautifully displayed and all other food was perfect. Kids loved it as well. Thank you

Nice atmosphere in new store. More space. Service is good and food good too. There is some new dishes with Trout . Always good for family get togethers

Awful experience.. we went on a weekday, naturally it was quiet. Although the waiter was very attentive, the food was almost inedible. The fish was very poorly made, raw, dry and tasteless. 3/5 dishes sent back, REALLY pathetic.<br/><br/>Waiter was very apologetic, even had taken our contact details for the manager to call us, as it appeared the manager was "too busy" to come and see why we had sent our food back. The manager was seen on his computer at the back of the restaurant obviously uninterested. <br/><br/>As South Africans we've grown to love ocean basket along the spectrum, but the cresta branch has really let the entire franchise down and the manager really needs to realize happy, satisfied run a restaurant. <br/><br/>

For a Friday evening, which was not busy on arrival, the lights were too bright & lacked ambience and audible music! Waitress tried her best, think she is new. Food wasn't great, lacked flavour & usually OB has great freshness! #goodluck #wontbeback

Ocean basket always has wonderful seafood and sushi. However when ordering the tuna sashimi, it was grey around the edges and not very fresh looking. A bit disappointed in the freshness of the tuna. Otherwise, salmon sashimi and other sushi quite fresh.

We could not complain about the platters. The calamari were cooked to perfection and the mussels in lemon butter sauce were devine. The service was good. The only sour note of the evening was being charged for a beer that never arrived at table and a Don Pedro that was not ordered ( my mistake ..should have checked the bill before paying)

Their sushi is not great , in looks and taste . The hake was well cooked . The calamari was gud . The rice with a lemmon butter sauce is gud . Still good value for money .

Ocean basket Cresta has made a huge turn around, it wasn't doing so great for a while, something didn't taste quiet the same but recently it has been fantastic in my past 3 visits. The revamp looks great and I find in the past month they have really found their feet and pulled it together great. Their calamari has been the best I have tasted in years, it has soft and crispy every time.

Food was OK for the price. Would not rush back as plenty of other good fish restaurants in the area. The acoustics is very bad as sound echoes all over the place creating a rather annoying sound. Konichiwa

I would like to know if there is any Ocean Basket that can actually cook fish properly.  I have been to quite a few now and I have to say they are consistent as a whole.  My fish is always cooked to death and my calamari will always be drenched in oil.  The salads never taste fresh and in fact tastes like it was left over night in the fridge.  They don’t make proper sushi, it always falls apart as you dip it in your soya.  The service is always lacking and I have not entered any branch that actually feels clean.  Even this branch that has recently been revamped feels dirty

Absolutely fuming. Went with my Mother and father in law and I can officially say, you are rubbish, close down.... the waitress was an absolute cow, you bring chilli and tarter but the bread comes later. The bottle of wine arrives after 15 minute, the tomatoes are over ripe (hair) and the fish and chips cold and the bill comes late. You don't deserve to be a franchise, you don't deserve to make money, and you don't deserve to be in Cresta. You are absolute rubbish and if "ocean basket cresta" was man, I would f*ck you up so badly you wouldn't breath. Close your door people, why rob innocent spenders.

Not going there again. Service was delivered [was NOT delivered..] by a lady hell bent on destroying the service ethic. While the food was Ocean Basket 'bearable',... the fact that the management failed to see the issues raised, and in turn failed to remedy the incorrect order further exacerbated a genuinely uncomfortable situation.<br/><br/>My mom rarely comes to my side of town, and this was definitely not one of our favourite evenings out together.<br/><br/>Great franchise. Terrible branch. The fact that this branch is part of an otherwise satisfactory franchise is what gets the review any points/rating at all. <br/><br/>It appears to me as if there is an invisible border between Cresta's poor and Bryanston's great service ethic...?? I am going to write more reviews just to see if this (revenue/regional) based hypothesis is true..

Terrible experience. Took almost an hour to get our food, no apology along the way by the waiter. Chips were refried and stale. Queen prawns I ordered were the same size as my girlfriend's prince prawns. Left hungrier then when i came in.

We tried out a few players on the new and improved menu and absolutely loved our experience at the also new and improved restaurant with an exciting innovative upmarket feel. For starters, we tried the Portuguese sardines, and whilst this isn't everyone's cup of tea, it was still tasty and full of flavour. We also had a taste of the new mediterasian sushi that I really enjoyed and highly recommend. Then for mains I had fish and calamari combo which was great as always. Had a fabulous dinner at Ocean Basket in the upstairs section of the new Cresta food court! The service was warm yet professional, the vibe lovely, and the food delicious. <br/><br/>Our oyster platter starter was great! Large, flavourful oysters with all the condiments one needs. My sushi platter for one was delicious - really great sushi considering it is not a speciality sushi restaurant. My boyfriend also thoroughly enjoyed his pick of the ocean mains. Will definitely be going back!

TERRIBLE TERRIBLE TERRIBLE! The new ocean basket opened in the new food court. And all i can say is don't go! My son ordered calamari and inside of it was random pieces of squid, which he hates. My daughters sushi came after all of us finished our meals, the tables are so close to each other that you can't move, you wait extremely long to place your order and then the order is wrong. It is absolutely horrible! And the cherry on the cake is that some alarm went off and it rang for about a half an hour! And when my daughter sushi came the order was wrong too! Dont go here its an absolute waste of money!

1 - The aesthetics and place itself. Ocean Basket is due for a restyling as I personally feel the whole old school beach side seafood restaurant styling is way too outdated. <br/><br/>2 - The staff. Very friendly staff and they were always there checking up on us with a smile on their face. Although the waiter that greeted us at the store had a very strong smell of sweat.<br/><br/>3 - The menu selection. There is a good selection of seafood and drinks to choose from on the menu. <br/><br/>4 - The meal. Started off with a garlic and cheese bread followed by 24 prince prawns which is my go to meal whenever I go to ocean basket as I feel these are the best prawns out of all the seafood places I go to in Jozi. Also had a chocolate lava cake for dessert and felt like the center could be more melted. The calamari my guests had were under done and had to be sent back. Once they came back they tasted great.<br/>

A friend wanted to come here  ,I ordered calamari 3 ways and my friend ordered queen prawns ,my calamari 3 ways was nice especially Cajun but my friend prawns were black and not fresh, she gave them to me to taste and they were horrible ,do not think I would ever come back here willingly

Yesterday my friends and I were talking about about food and somehow ended up at the Ocean Basket in Cresta shopping mall, our go to favourite. Whenever we go to an Ocean Basket we all order the platter for one and a village salad for the table. We were greeted by a very enthusiastic waiter which made it a pleasant experience as it was my first time eating at this particular Ocean Basket. We were informed that there was no squid heads available, which made us rethink our situation but a couple minutes later, our waiter informed us that he made a plan in order for us to get some squid heads. The food was decent but our service was above and beyond. If you ever go here ask for Michael and you can see what I mean.

We have been going to this particular Ocean Basket for many many years. We started going there because of their Sushi which was the best we ever had. The selection has certainly grown over time but we still enjoy the old favourites salmon roses, rainbow rolls & hand rolls. The village salad always is fresh and we have it every time. The food is consistently good and we enjoy going there. The reason this franchise is our favourite is all to do with the waitrons and the service we receive. It is like meeting your family every single time we go there, the waiters comes up and welcomes us with huge smiles and personal greetings. Now that is amazing service to return for! Frank is the Man! On the down side it's very busy and can get very noisy. Still the best place for sushi, fish & salad.

Lovely fish for our mid - week dinner... Real value for money and really tasty fish.. Calamari and Hake combo. Best of both and staff that could anything in their stride..

Went for a dinner at Ocean Basket with friends. I ordered the prawn and calamari combo. The prawns were delicious! I wasn't particularly impressed with the calamari. <br/><br/>The restuarant was empty but it was a Sunday evening. The service was decent, the waitress was polite and efficient. <br/>

Staff was really friendly. Even though the food took a bit long because it was a friday night and the restaurant was packed, the food was still amazing! Very fresh and nicely done. Definitely will come back!

Service was pretty slow considering the waiters were rushing around madly - maybe the kitchen is slow? I ordered sushi and it was the WORST sushi I have had in my life.  It was beyond terrible. And, it came AFTER all the hot dishes.  This Ocean Basket needs improving.

Service was pretty poor, fish was full of bones and was a pretty small serving for ocean basket standards (and we go to ocean basket A LOT). As far as Ocean Baskets go.. This was probably our worst experience...

The service is great, however it took a while for us to get our food but our waiter kept checking up on us until our food arrived. I enjoyed the new winter items that they added on the menu especially the seafood paella. Also try the jug lemonade or ginger beer. The sushi isn't that great(too much rice) but it isn't the worst and you can't go wrong with the welcome bread.

We went to ocean basket and can honestly say the food was shit ! We had the paella and my word was it a painfully slow unbearable lunch; my sisters drink came with an insect ...ocean basket cresta come on

Who lets a trainee serve a table all by herself? We didn't have a proper waiter at all. Poor girl barely spoke English and had no clue how to deal with customers. She brought us a bread basket before asking us whether we want drinks. Tried to get the attention of other waiters - only caught someone's eye much later, who didn't help us, just told us he'd call our "waiter". When we finally had drinks we ordered a haloumi starter to share and pre ordered our mains: I had to portions of vegetarian sushi and my dad had calamari and chips. Had to repeat our order a few times and somehow knew she'd still get it wrong. Waited for ages for our starter. Our trainee later brought the condiments for my sushi - upon which I told her that we're still waiting for our starter. She brought me the haloumi and my dad the calamari as the starter. No sushi. I failed to get the other waiters' attention because they were all busy chatting while standing around at the entrance. Finally got my sushi, which was bland, but acceptable. Wasn't an awful experience, but not something I'd pay for again.

Service can be a hit and miss but thankfully the food is of a great standard. The Ocean Basket brand offers good seafood at good prices. Located in the heart of Cresta shopping Centre, you wouldn't visit this branch for a scenic experience but it's great for a quick bite while shopping or before a movie.

Came for lunch with my sister in law. Service was good. Had a sushi platter which was rolled very well and the flavours all complimented each other. For dessert we decided to share a mississippi mud pie which was supposed to have mousse in the middle and fudge on top and well..... It was frozen and without fudge. Was very disappointed with the dessert.

Good family style food. Never disappointing, always fresh and great service - mangers are particular attentive. Not ideal location being inside a shopping centre, but consistent and great tasting seafood.

If you haven't eaten at one of these .. You haven't eaten well at south Africa... Delicious mussels . Juicy prawns . Best cocktails I drank this trip. Get drunk on sea food people.. Come try their calamaris and their octopus or anything just anything... It's vow... Grips salads and portions are huge ,... We ate three times in different cities but we did get back..

most aweful experience at cresta branch, we started 2 months ago at rosebank with thee coldest food I have ever eaten the manager on the evening told us it was belgium potatoes that was the reason they were cold and soaked in oil. yesterday monday the 7th of October we were in creasta and decided to give the company another try... what a disaster as we sat down the waitress was lovely chatting and thanking us for being there not even 5 mins later the manager spoke on the top of his voice to the employees which as a customer was uncomfortable to say the least when we call him over he and asked him to shut up as we trying to have a conversation and cant he started arguing with us and getting the staff involved I have never been so embarrassed and you could see the waitress was embarrassed aswell, if you need help training your managers there are plenty of places to send them ocean basket has become an embarrassment to go to and we shall definitely not be returning...

We're regulars and are never disappointed! The service is great and seafood sumptuous :)

If I'm not getting seafood takeaways I am here, the seafood here is AMAZING! Our waiter was really friendly and as people who eat out a lot, my boyfriend and I appreciate two important aspects of a restaurant the most, quality of food and service and I must say that the Ocean Basket in Cresta has both! Calamari all the way!

Because Im from Cape Town, seafood doesnt impress me easily. But for good value seafood (in Joburg) you cant go wrong with Ocean Basket, and especially the Cresta branch. They make make the best sushi of all the Ocean Baskets. I particularly love Ocean Basket salad (who needs lettuce) and they recently updated their menu.
