Review Crayfish Inn - Ramsgate

Caylee Lombard
The service is impeccable, the waitress checked in regularly but without coming too much. And the food! Oh my word. If you’re looking for delicious fresh seafood, I’d definitely recommend coming here. The hake was soft, the batter was perfect. The prawns were nice and big. The calamari was a little bland. But the portions were nice and big. Outdoor seating is lovely and airy. However the inside was a bit dark. I think the aim was for an old fashioned seafood restaurant which they definitely achieved but I feel that there could’ve been a different execution(however this is just my personal taste). Overall we had a wonderful time, so I would definitely recommend coming and trying out their seafood.

Phenomenal seafood. We had the 3 course meal at an excellent price, with neither the starters , mains or desserts disappointing! The service and atmosphere was also fantastic. Would definitely recommend.

The food is devine! I have been to many restaurants in the South Coast, and can easily say this is one of the best. I highly recommend a stop here!

Exquisite! Excellent! The service was amazing. The food was mouth watering delicious! We built our own combo with calamari, fish cakes, prawns, mussels and hake. Oh my word- everything melts like butter in your mouth. Definitely a fine dine experience. I would HIGHLY recommend!

What a wonderful resturant. So many of the places nearby offer the same kind of evening-out, pub and comfort food. The Lobster Pot however, is an upmarket cullenary experience. The staff is professional and friendly. The ambience is warm and welcoming. You get the sense that the establishment have been around for some time and their expiernce shows in the quality of service. Dinner was incredible, everyone at our table was in love with what they were presented and the taste did not disappoint. The menu is not too lengthy but with a considerate amount of variety. I highly recommend The Lobster Pot.

We had a lovely quick, early dinner at The Lobster Pot this afternoon. Stepping into the restaurant was like stepping into a story of sea faring adventures. You feel completely shut away from the rest of the world, in a good way, thanks to the decor and enchanting aquarium. We were brought a complementary olive tapenade and I must say, they could just have given me a bowl, spoon and bread and I would have been on my way! For mains we had the Natal Lamb Curry accompanied by a poppadom and a combo of Large Prawns and Calamari with savoury rice, tartar sauce and an extra lemon butter sauce. The Lamb Curry was deliciously tender and prepared to be mild as per our request. It was still flavourful and absolutely a comfort food dish. The prawns from the combo dish were well sized and prepared. The calamari strips were fried in a light batter and was super tender. I was impressed by the tartar sauce, yummy! The only tiny hiccup for me was the lemon butter sauce that I ordered extra. It unfortunately didn't have any real taste to it although it did look like something like garlic was also added. That and the fact that it cost R22 for roughly 30ml was a tiny bit of a downer.

Excellent relaxed dining reminiscent of a bygone era. Superb food at a very reasonable cost. The staff made us very welcome, even dressing up the table for my wife's birthday......... Top notch,!!

Great food and atmosphere at the Lobster Pot. Everyone only had compliments for the tasty food we ate. The Eisbein and Blue Burger being voted the favorite in our family although my Thai Green Curry was pretty delicious too but I was a bit confused by the ripe bananas on the side :). Staff were friendly and helpful. And the restaurant had a lovely vibe too.

Their seafood platter for 168 is the best👏

Generally a nice experience, unfortunately a young waiter was shouting and swearing at another staff member. This ruined the experience for us. Our waiter however was very pleasant.

Super friendly service and really good food!

Great atmosphere and layout and I was highly impressed with the seafood here. Ordered the family platter and the prawns and calamari were amazingly fresh and cooked perfectly. The Crayfish inn is on my list of top seafood restaurants. Definitely worth the visit with friendly staff to compliment. Would have loved to try out the rest of their menu.

The food was great but we waited really long for our food we ordered our food and our food arrived after the table next to us and we ordered before that table arrived, we ordered at 18:10 and only got our meals at 19:20 a second round of drinks was not offered, the kiddies chicken was very dry, it was cold so we sat inside which had no ambiance, no alternative seating was offered, if you going there for food it was amazing but don’t expect much els.

As we arrived we were greeted by a welcoming lady and were seated in a cosy and ambient environment. The food was good quality, tasty and the portions very good. The reason they do not score 4* is that all my prawns had veins still which I find unacceptable anywhere.

The seafood is so so fresh and prepared so perfectly. The oysters were to die for! I had queen prawns, which were more like kings and so tender and tasty.

Food was good until the food poisoning hit us both when we got home. 3 days later and still suffering from the after effects!!!! Luckily we never had to be hospitalized!!!!

Did not get to experience the food because the service to just get seated at an empty restaurant was crap. We left 😞 The manager was uninvolved and the waiters did not even try to accomodate us at all.

I decided to come here for a romantic treat with my boyfriend. We were greated by a friendly waitron who made the rest of the night enjoyable. The food was good and the atmosphere was incredible.

You will definitely see me again on my next holiday.

We really had an excellent experience here. The food was really good, the service was just as great!! The quality of the food was really yum. I would recommend going there any day if you are in town!! 😊

Horrible tasting food. Very blend and fish soaking in butter. Tried the calamari steak but couldn't finish it so ordered the hake. Was equally bad... highly disappointed and I doubt I'll ever set foot here again.

Had been looking forward to visiting this renowned restaurant, but so disappointed. The metal structure is bordering on dangerous, it is rusted and in serious need of repair. The Crayfish Bisque was excellent although very sparce and had to order a second portion. My Mother from Ireland ordered the Scampie and said it was unrecognisable as Scampie, it was dry and tasteless, will never order that again. My Father from Scotland had the Fish and Chips and could only describe it as unappetising and grey in colour. The Chef refussed to let us sample a bit of Calamari so he lost a lot of points for cooperation in the service industry. It really is a shame that this little diamond in the sand has gone down hill so badly.

I visited your restaurant this evening, 11 March 2017. I wanted to have spme crayfish and asked the waiter, musa, what the prices for the platter for 2, crayfish platter and then just the crayfish thermador was. He said that the platter for 2 was R595, crayfish platter depended on the size of the crayfish so I asked how much for a crayfish platter with 300g crayfish. I was told it was between R400 and R500. Cant remember the exact price. I decided to have the crayfish platter anyway. I also asked if it was possible to swop the hake for the dorado. The waiter went to a manager and returned, informing us that it would be R50 extra. I told him to leave it and he walked away. The food arrived with the wrong fish on the plate in anyway. When it was time to pay, i read through the bill and realized he had charged me the R50 extra for the dorado. When asked, he said he didn't hear me. I paid the bill in full. When we were on our way out, the waiter threw his tray down, started shouting at another waitress about what had happened. I stood and listened and heard him tell her i had refused to pay the R50. I went and spoke to her. She seemed nice but Musa interfered. He didnt know what he was talking about. Absolute disgusting service. I would happily spend R820 for 2 people on food if it's worth it. But after this whole episode, I will never return to the crayfish inn. You can thank your waiter musa for that.

Terribly Overpriced and portions way too small!!!!! I will not recommend this to anyone!!!! Who asks R345 for a platter for one???? I am so disgusted

Our party were on the lookout for some sea food, thankfully most of the holidaying masses had left so we did not have to deal with that stress. The setting is weird and retro and consists of a tropical 🌴, hothouse setting all under a circus tent ⛺️, was not sure what was real or fake vegetation, the centre piece is a magnificent palm tree , must be real, which is so large that a hole in the tent is required to show its full splendor, if you want to view this you have to go outside 😝 , floor consists of rounded pebbles set in concrete , if you lift your eyes 👀 upward you will see the effects of rampant corrosion on poor steel structure doing a brave work keeping the tent from collapsing, after a glass of wine 🍷 I lost interest in the decor and enjoyed my fish and calamari combo , mostly enjoyed by all . I will probable visit again also for interest to see if the structure has not collapsed , don't think this establishment would exist any where but on the south coast , worth a visit , maybe interior decorating students looking at the more outlandish restaurant interiors 😜

The food was nice with great portions. Service was friendly. The restaurant decorations weren't so great as it looked a bit rundown. Overall a nice experience

The Crayfish Inn has a nice atmosphere with friendly and welcoming staff. Unfortunately, the quality of food did not match up.

The calamari rings for a starter were delicious, however for the main course I ordered the hake and prawns combo. The hake was frozen and not fresh, leaving a very bland and unnecessarily boring taste in my mouth. The prawns had a very rubbery consistency and I felt I could have bounced them off the floor for entertainment.

All in all, a nice place to go for drinks because of the vibe, so long as you order your next round as soon as you are served.

The food was mediocre and I feel the food was overpriced for the quality and taste. The staff were friendly and welcoming, although I do think the establishment is understaffed, especially during busy seasons. The atmosphere was nice, especially sitting in the inside garden with the beautiful coloured lights. I would go back again but not for the food, more for the atmosphere.

Okay so here we go....upon entering there was s a sign " please wait to be seated". Benign ignored by the waiters does not boast any confidence as my first impressions.

The waiting staff seem to be very scattered although only 3 tables for lunch.

Must say its hot and sticky in here, with very quirky touches everywhere. To be a total snob the plastic chairs makes me stick to my seat even more.

I started off with some "local" oysters at R13 each. Okay they are fresh and local. I've had these before and enjoy them very much.

I ordered the Lobster bisque hopefully made with the local crayfish found here.
You can give me a liter of this on flip flops and I'll eat it. It was seasoned perfectly and very creamy. There was minimal amount of lumps in it which is a winner.

For mains we ordered the seafood platter for two with hake, prawns, mussels, calamari and each a baby crayfish.

Here's my review of the main meal.... For gods sake how many times did the cook/chef cooked a crayfish? It is as tough and could hardly dislodge it from its shell.

The calamari was as tough as nails and rubbery- enough to put it in a bloody car.

The hake once again was frozen and then prepared, thus tough and flavorless.

Why do you put two onion rings on this plate? What's the purpose of this?

The rice was......rice what can I say.

Not enough garlic butter, trust me one needs it to soften up the crayfish.

That was the bad.. Now the good:

The prawns was excellent, well cooked and juicy really if you want to order anything from here then that it, but wait there's another gem.

Try their muscles it was embellished with a garlic, buttery thick sauce.

Thus my verdict,

Never again... This was a very expensive roller coaster ride of good and bad.

The price does not justify the mediocre food.

Very unhappy.
The food was really delicious, but the waitering was not good. The waiter wore shorts and an untidy exercise shirt. There was only 2 waiters for about 12 tables and thus the waiter took a long time to get to our table for the orders and to bring the bill. For the price you pay, service should be a lot better.

Upon reading the reviews on the Crayfish Inn, I made sure to make a reservation and on top of that pic a time where I could still enjoy dinner before the peak evening rush.

I arrived at the restaurant at 5:30pm this afternoon to an empty 😃 tropical little paradise!

We ordered the crayfish as starters and they came timeously. Thoroughly enjoyed this, especially with it being my first time eating crayfish!

For mains I had a hake and prawn combo with the crunchiest shoestring fries I have ever had. The hake was fried really well but I think it was a bit under-seasoned. The combo also came with tartar sauce which I quite enjoyed. Another real gem was their chili paste (I had all of it) and regretted it at a point when my mouth caught fire temporarily, but it was worth it because it was really good! The combo portion was decent and quite filling.

With regards to the customer service, I think it was fine, not as bad as described in other reviews BUT they did get very slow when the restaurant started filling up, they seem to be understaffed.

Overall although I believe the food here is overpriced, it was a great experience, I loved our table location and I believe that the freshness and size of the seafood down at the coast is something undeniable and it will truly be missed when I head back to the concrete jungle.

The restaurant is fully booked during peak season so make a reservation. The venue is quaint and the decor needs a refresh however the waiters are attentive and the food is delicious.

Very disappointed :( we have been to the Crayfish Inn a few times over the years and I always have the prawn curry, which is usually really yum, but tonight I thought I'd try something different. BIG MISTAKE!!! First we waited almost 40min for our food, our waitress only came to us for our drink and food order and then again 40min later to give our food. The place was busy, but they should of capt it at what they could handle so people would get better quality food and in quicker time. I had the mussel starter which was bland - the sauce was a white sauce. I also had the crayfish starter which was just a crayfish and fried, no taste - a simple lemon butter would have been great. My husband had the peri-peri livers which was incredibly hot and ended up being inedible (and he loves hot food). He also had the hake, which is a simple go-to dish. This was also sent back as it was so over done that the fork would bounce off it. The manager tried to make it up to us by giving us something else, but we didn't accept cause it would have taken another 40min to do and would probably have tasted the same. Overall not the best night out on our holiday.

Listen to reviews! Tried this place out tonite and as the reviews say, the rice is delicious! The calamari starter however is tougher than rubber. Not even my husband, Righteousjester, who never complains about food, wanted to eat it.
We ordered the Kingklip and crayfish Thermidor both with rice. The onion rings that came with both meals was superb.
The meal itself wasn't anything to complain about, average at best.

Spillers Wharf in Port Shepstone and Blue Lagoon in Ramsgate still get my vote.
Kezia Kent
Ordered the grilled prawns with rice. Tasted great but both were drenched in oil - loses the 'grilled' appeal on the menu. I would suggest boosting the healthier cooking methods. However ambiance and welcoming was great even for off-peak season.

I visited the Crayfish Inn in Margate last night. What I loved most was the garden setting it was so beautiful. We sat in a little corner surrounded by plants and lovely lighting. I orderd a Mini Platter for one it was the Chefs choice. I loved the rice it was one of the best I have tasted. I also enjoyed the mussels it was devine and the chips were perfect. The calamari I found a bit rubbery and the fish and prawns a bit bland. My bf really enjoyed the steak and crayfish combo. Service was excellent. We had a very friendly waitress. All in all great environment, good food and lovely service.

nice atmosphere, lovely view, good service, amazing food.
Just had crayfish and steak for lunch, didn't think we would find any good seafood on the south coast, but this place has is

One of two decent seafood restaurants in the area, great for the obligatory prawn platter, but also all the other seafoodie starters and mains. Still very good meals and there's not to many down this side of KZN
