Review 1855 - Pretoria

Jul Da Bull
Affordable food, good service and nice setting at Lynnwood Bridge. Breakfasts all capped for over two years now, they deserve huge kudos just for that, and has lovely lunchtime promotions on meals to choose from. Their food quality is good and also serve tasty meals Check em out if you’re in the area - just be on time as breakfast closes at 11:30

Had some breakfast there, man, just love the vibe, felt a little like home coffee is good, and love the theme of the place. Keep it really amazing!

The big selling point is an amazingly priced R45 across all breakfasts before 11h30. The quality isn't five star, but for the price and compared to surrounding restaurants it is great. Absolutely delicious farm style toast. Updated with pictures 26 July 2023, breakfast special now @R50.

They have a great breakfast special- all breakfasts at the same price. The service was fast and friendly but my eggs Benedict was a little dry.
Salumé Heymans
The food was fantastic! Service friendly and quick! 11/10 would recommend!

Amazing wide range of breakfast at VERY reasonable prices. I had the biggest flap Jack's I have ever seen in my life.. Very fluffy and light. I enjoyed them. My date had the Phutupap with chicken liver... And he said it genuinely tastes like how it would be made at home. He loved it. The service was amazing. The environment was very good. FYI - it gets packed pretty quickly in the morning. Rather reserve table or come as early as possible like 8am.
Bernadette Bredenkamp
Incredible morning buzz with their breakfast special of R45 for anything on the breakfast list. Definitely a popular choice in the area. It is Friday morning and most chairs are packed. If you run out of luck her, there are some other places to choose from within strolling distance

Went to check out this place for lunch, it's situated in a sortve outside food court next to a water feature so it has that ambience but it's a basic straight to the point eatery. When I arrived I was immediately shown to a table and asked what I'd like to drink whilst waiting for my order I was asked for my drink order again by a different waitron, even tho the place was quite busy, the food arrived fairly quickly, it was hot, fresh and delicious. I had a seafood pasta and my companion had a chicken pesto pasta we both loved our meals it was honestly really good, this place is ridiculousy reasonably priced. I highly recommend it.

I had a great time at 1855! The atmosphere is relaxed and chilled. Great music selection. I’m taking off a star since the lasagna was smaller than expected and too much dressing on my salad. However, I will visit this place again especially for their specials
Johan
Went for breakfast during their breakfast special. Overall had a good experience. The food was a little overcooked and not as hot when it arrived, as they were very busy, but the coffee was great.
Roland Merkle
Stumbled upon their "burger and beer" special. It was their last order for the day and it took long to get the burger. One could criticize and point out several weak points, but in the end it was still good value for money. Addition. Also tried their very popular "any breakfast for R45".
Anton De Jager
Great place, great atmosphere and friendly staff. Fantastic to have any breakfast for R45 before 11h30am. We have been here more than 10 times, and the food is always great. Great value for money. Beautiful restaurant. Will visit again many times.
Tiego Raseroka
Absolutely the best place in Pretoria east to have breakfast. Especially between 9am-11h30 as they have a killer special where any breakfast item is R45 during this time. This price is a 2021 price. Great service, great variety of breakfast and absolutely devine tea and latte.
Marista Grobler
The only reason it is a 4 and not a 5 star, is because of the wait... but it is very much worth it! Excellent food, quick and efficient service, friendly staff. I'll definitely go there again.
Jessy Underhill
Really good selection of food and prepared with care! Best chicken curry I've ever had! Calamari is also unique to me as it's whole squid instead of rings.
Hanli Nel
This is the place to hang out for the best breakfast on a Saturday! Great specials and amazing food. Waiters always friendly. The 4* on atmosphere is because the music inside can be too loud.
Justin Solomons
The food and service was great! They have a lovely breakfast special.
Stoffel Van Der Merwe
The previous visit was good but on 5 December 2019 very disappointing - line fish oily and very salty. Chips looked like it was terstetday’s chips and warmed up Food had the taste of old oil
The service was however very good
Wine by glass varied between customers some half some three quarters full

Finally got to try their breakfast today. French toast was really yummy, quite a big portion for the price and a lovely cappuccino. The mince on toast is excellent and also very filling.
The service is very slow but staff are friendly and so is the manager. Will definitely be back again, especially for the breakfast special.

My friend and I love this place for a quick lunch during the week. The toasted sandwiches are tasty and come with a generous portion of well spiced chips. The best part is the pampoen koekies in the decadent butterscotch sauce for dessert. Good prices too!

Went for breakfast on Saterday morning. Ordered the Pretoria Breakfast. The breakfast was very dissaponting the boerwors was burnt and dry , the mushrooms and eggs were cold. All in all not a nice a nice breakfast
.
Came for breakfast today. Service from the gentleman serving us was good but he seemed to be the only one serving tables as the rest of waitstaff were either standing around or not on the floor. I ordered the eggs benedict with gypsy ham. 3 orders arrived together and mine came separate. No idea why. Waited ages for anyone to bring black pepper. Finally cut into my eggs benedict only to discover HAIR in my food. As I am writing this, the empty cups are still on the table from when we initially ordered. Not impressed at all! Manager still it been by to apologize or offer anything else to me. Absolutely horrible service.

The history of the Jakaranda City comes to life by means of the decor of 1855.
The menu has a lot of all time South African favourites and some other classics as well.
I had the eggs benedict and I loved it!
I would definitely recommend this place to all who love fine food and our beautiful city that is Pretoria.

11.02.2018 What an absolute disappointment for breakfast. Friends and I decided to meet for breakfast just to catch up like normal people, as we are always together for some or other function, tweeting and Facebooking etc. We arrived quite early and the restaurant was till empty. As each one arrived we ordered coffees to get us going. They have a reasonable selection of food but most of us were drawn to the Salmon Eggs Benedict and one friend needed some more after Ultra the night before so he ordered the Jaffle (which brings so many memories for all of us)

After an extremely long wait and the whole restaurant being filled up, and all other patrons receiving their meals before us we asked what is going on. Only to find out that they ran out of the roosterbrood which they use, so by then only half the table received their food (cold) and some of us waited even longer.

Eventually we also got ours, but our next observation by everyone is the size of the food which is probably more like a kiddies portion for R85. The one piece of roosterbrood was probably the size of 2 of my fingers. The amount of Salmon on them was a few leftover scraping which is totally non acceptable. We were also asked how we wanted our poached eggs but we all just ended up with the same eggs.

We called the manager (Johannes) and explained our issue firstly that we were not informed that they had run out of ingredients for our order until we had inquired as to what was taking so long. And secondly the minute amount of Salmon that was given on an already small piece of bread. He dealt with it, and apologised for the inconvenience and immediately discounted the value we paid for the Salmon Benedict's. Communication is key, if you run out or have a problem inform your customers as it's easier to be understanding when something arises versus being left in the dark and getting annoyed. We could have ordered something else off the menu (with a bigger portion size) as we all left really hungry.

Thank you to Johannes for rectifying the situation, even though I would be hesitant to go back.
Carel Frederik Kallie
Food was great but place will not see me again. Service was slow and we had to ask the waitress to clear our tables. That is a big no no for me.
Kerry Anne Tapuch
Very good breakfast! Great value for money!!! Had the eggs Benedict with Salmon was a great taste but would have liked a slightly larger portion. Had the Pretoria breakfast the next time and wow what value for money! Large portion and very nice flavour!
Belinda Liebenberg
Great breakfast, very affordable and service excellent. Love this place! Open at 7am everyday. Staff always friendly! My office most mornings. Give it a try. Well worth it

Cosy and convenient, 1855 is lovely for families. I've had tons of breakfast at this restaurant. I love it especially because they have so many specials. The French toast is one my favourites.
Valerie Joy Robinson
Absolutely disgusted!! Waited 20 min to order, waited 30min for coffee and after waiting an hour for food and asking where it was we were informed that they were out of stock of EVERYTHING WE orderd! Unacceptable service and manager just shrugged and said she could not help it. Don't even try go here!!!!

We went for a quick dinner before a show at the Atterbury Theatre and decided to try this restaurant.
It looked very warm and cozy from the outside. The menu isn't very broad though and I decided on some chicken and chips. I was pleasantly surprised to get panpoenkoekies as well! The chicken however was overcooked and a bit on the dry side. Overall a nice experience with satisfactory service.

1855 is a quaint and very cute restaurant. The food is simple and delicious. However, being a new restaurant they are still sorting out a view issues. The service is not yet up to scratch and the food can take quite a while- especially if you are there for their breakfast special.

I must say they sell the best and tastiest simple food ever. The minute we got the food we became silent because it tasted soo good and at such reasonable prices I must add . The service was great and we left with unbelievably happy tummies

Went to 1855 for Breakfast. We never made a reservation and decided to sit outside as there was a table available. Inside looked cozy and beautifully decorated.

The waitress was friendly and efficient in taking our order. The cappuccinos arrived quite quickly and was good. We waited a bit for our food. I ordered the Eggs Benedict which was beautifully presented and tasted as good as it looked. I liked the roosterkoek instead of English muffin for a change. My husband had the chicken livers, with eggs and toast. He also enjoyed it.

What I was a bit disappointed about is the fact that there were no salt and pepper on the table. We weren't offered any condiments and we weren't also not given serviettes. We had to ask. We weren't offered any more coffee and waited a while before we could ask for the bill.

Will maybe try 1855 again for lunch.

My friend and I visited the restaurant this morning for some breakfast. It's definitely a gem. The food was lovely and the service was really good as well. Browsed the menu and feel like I need to came back and taste everything that they. Would love to try the jaffels and dessert.

My friend and I are certainly coming back here.

This relatively new restaurant is at the Lynnwood Bridge shopping centre. Nestled between a lot of established and/or franchise eateries. Which is maybe a pity, because it tends to be overlooked. What grabbed my attention was the fact that they've got JAFFLES on the menu! That brings back a lot of childhood memories, doesn't it? And these are so delicious - stuffed to the brim and served with the most delicious French Fries and behold.... PUMPKIN FRITTERS. Decadent and moreish, dripped with caramel syrup. We've been there a few times - so I've had the bobotie jaffle and the Chicken, Feta and Pesto jaffle. Both delish! Hubby had the Eggs Benedict, that was really fab and a yum burger. If you are looking form something a little more interesting that the major franchises in this centre - try 1855 out! Oh, and the restaurant is very much 'Pretoria' themed! For you who don't know - Pretoria was established in 1855.

Lynnwood Bridge is a great place to have dinner, and 1855 is a great place to have a burger or steak. Drinks and food choices are limited, so check out the menu in advance.

I can't understand why this great little restaurant has so few patrons compared to the other restaurants at the center.
A lovely clean restaurant with tasteful, neat decor. Beautiful crockery that we wanted to steal and I loved the easy going music. Left me very relaxed.
Service is great and very fast, food is hot and fresh!

I had the Peanut Butter chicken salad and the dressing was delicious. I asked for some extra pumpkin fritters on the side and they were amazing.
Hubby had a burger which was a really decent size with crispy, tasty chips. The deconstructed milk tart is definitely worth a try!
Their food is different and really yummy. We will definitely be back to try the great sounding breakfasts and I'm dying to try a jaffle!

Seriously, give this place a try!! Now!!

Love love love this place.....great food and nice people serving you. Will come back any time. Steak and hamburgers are great value for money

My aim when I went to Lynnwood Bridge was to go to a well known restaurant but when I saw 1855, I thought let me give this new place a try.
It was a quiet Saturday, maybe cos it's fairly new - not sure when they opened.
I love the decor and the openness of the restaurant. They have a very limited regular menu so it's not the best place to go if you are a fussy eater.
I ordered the Beef Burger. The patty is thick and delicious.

The service was on point. I will go back to try more food off their menu.

I was hesitant to try it out as it wqs very small amd I never really see people there. But what a gem this restaurant is 👌🏻
The food was delicous and I will visit them in future. Our waiter was soo friendly and on top of things even though the were some people there over lunch time the food was fast there

New spot by Lynwood bridge. 1855 is such a truly authentic experience, I trust it will soon be the quintessential check out spot in Pretoria. It's named 1855 to peg light to the year Pretoria was discovered, they offer jaffles, something I've only had on the south side of Pretoria Campus, which are proper authentic. I went for a bobotie jaffle as I wanted a true South African experience, the jaffle was served with sprouts and pumpkin fritters, the chair are made using an authentic rope style which was apparently very popular in Pretoria at the time, I adore this place and the passion behind it. The meals are proper homey South African food with some elevation, but I do enjoy that the food is good and so reasonably priced. Very chilled vibes also.

We had supper at 1855. The menu is small and basic, but well-priced. The food was tasty, good value for money. The service by the friendly staff was good - quite refreshing, given that so many restaurants have poor service! We hope the good service remains!

Ambience is what one expects for a place like this, nothing fancy. Music was great.

Will definitely try the dessert next time.
Marentia Van Kasterop
1855 is a nice new venue at Lynnwoodbridge.

They share the restaurant space with the likes of Tribeca, Stephanies, Cafe Beiritz etc.

They have a pretty basic menu with burgers, jaffles and craft beer. Unfortunately nothing vegetarian but two salads.

The service was friendly and good.
Raoul
Decided to try out 1855 for lunch after reading all the reviews. Must admit no wow factor but service was good as well as the food. I had the peri chicken burger and it was not the most amazing burger ever but it was good and it did the job. Will I be back? Most probably but there are way better places in the surroundings areas.
Thinus
Inexpensive food, a big variety of craft beer , super friendly service.
When last did you eat a bobotie or spinach cream jaffle?
Great stop for drinks before a show at Atterbury or dinner afterwards.
We will be back

Popped in here for an early Friday evening dinner. The service is one of the friendliest I've experienced. Was a real delight. The food was very good. I will definitely be back to try the other items on the menu. Lovely place.

Lekker lekker lekker.
Baie goeie menu met kraft bier en burgers.
Die diens was goed en vriendelik.

Like the truly South African vibe with a proud Pretoria feel.
Monique Van Tonder
Only went here for dessert so can't comment on the food but from what we experienced we'll definitely be back! Great service and very friendly welcoming from the waiter. We requested to see the breakfast menu and it looks nice as well with a few unique items. 1855 has been open for about a month and they are very eager to please the customers!

Husband had a baked chocolate pudding and I went for the deconstructed milktart with a cappucino each. The desserts are very well priced at R25 and really very tasty, haven't had better elsewhere! The cappucino is well up to standard and alsovery afforable at R20.

The décor is nice, warm and comfortable with plenty of seating. The background jazz music is a nice touch and gives 1855 the perfect vibe for a date night.

Decent prices, great food, a wide variety of craft beer and friendly staff should see 1855 become a buzzing place soon! Zomato doesn't have menus up yet so I've added them here.
Carina Markerink
The waiter did not get the order correct and we had to repeat it 3 times until recorded correctly. Food was not done as ordered and was cold.

Went here for dinner. The babotie jaffle is a must try. Good atmosphere. Great, super fast service. Burgers and dessert very homey. We will definitely return.
Michelle
Enjoyed breakfast (we had chicken livers and eggs benedict), good coffee, friendly staff. Interesting menu-will definitely be back for lunch!
Francisca Pretorius
Delicious bobotie jaffles with pumpkin fritters and the best deconstructed milktart in town. Great selection of craft beers and some nice wines. The prices are very reasonable and the service attentive! Highly recommended
Jaco
We visited for lunch 2 weeks ago and were only the 3rd patrons to visit since their opening! We were made to feel very welcome and the service was really good. Their menu is somewhat limited for now, but you get good quality, interesting food (when last did you see a jaffle on a restaurant menu!) at a good price. Their deconstructed milktart is a definite winner. I have been back a second time since and I think I will become a regular...
