Review The Green Olive Restaurant - Pretoria

Domonic H. Ferreira
Enjoyed the experience. Food was good. Was disappointed that meals did not come with anything extra like chips or salad with the omelette that I ordered. For a Sunday I would recommend extra waiters. All the waiters was extremely helpful and professional. This venue is beautiful with a fireplace for those colder winter days.

What a lovely place. Love the olden atmosphere. Sorry, i forgot to take the name of the guy who came to welcome us at the table. A real soft-spoken gentle soul with the biggest sunshine smile. No wonder I missed his name tag. Really a lovely place.

Loved the place! The venue is beautiful with lots of tables under big shady trees. Food was stunning, we enjoyed the appetizer platters and every bite was scrumptious. The restrooms are so refreshingly clean and pretty, I felt like a lady. Lots of parking and easy accessible. Will hopefully visit again.

What a stunning place. Loved the outdoor vibes, little shops and huge play area for the kids. We had their pizza and milkshake and we can highly recommend it.

We had a leasurely lunch under a tree with splashes of sunshine gracing the lawn around us. Food was outstanding. Service good. Relaxed and earthy. Decor gems soothes the creative soul in you.

Excellent place to have a meal in a quite relaxed garden environment and also visit a well layedout nursery with a wide range of plants at competitive prices. Good place for wheelchair access in the restaurant garden & also caters for youngsters.

Great place, has a nice open area and playground for kids. A few interesting shops and a nursery surround it. Very quaint and village-like. Food was great as well. Nice pizzas, quiches and breakfast options.

We had the best dining experince at Green Olive today. A big thank you to the best waiter, Tato Mahlangu and a special thank you to Timothy Bube, the chef behind the amazing breaksfast we had. He even wrote down tips on how to make my flapjacks! Then Kevin, thank you for having us. Such a great experience!

Great garden seating area with a fountain which is really calming and relaxing and you really get to enjoy your food, even forget that’s your still in Pretoria . Friendly service, food was really great just the cappuccino was a bit cold either than that great place especially for Sunday breakfast

Went there for a Sunday breakfast because we were in the mood for something different and we were not disappointed at all. The menu may be temporary due to new management but there were still so many options available. Pleasant atmosphere, good service and great food. Tables are nicely spaced so you don't hear your neighbors conversation and there were two beautiful dogs running around. Will find out if we can take ours there next time. Two cocktails to end our time there and we've said we will definitely go back for some amazing looking pizzas and burgers sometime.
Lunch started out promising as we were offered a table very quickly. And that's where anything quick ended. People arriving after us received their food before us. The waitress was full of apologies and offered us drinks on the house... Just to hear 10 minutes later that they don't offer beer on the house. I spoke to the manager, who said the owner wasn't there... And she was helping in the kitchen... And managing... But agreed to the beer. When the food eventually arrived... It was beyond mediocre... What a pity for such a nice venue. Will I be back? Maybe when my beer arrives... So I guess never...

A good place to have breakfast or lunch if you have kids. The play area is big and you have a nice view over the kids. The service was slow but the pizza we had was good. A very relaxed setting. We enjoyed it.

Stunning outdoor setting with a couple of nick nack shops... nice children's play areas and a gorgeous little nursery, these are a few of the things giving Green Olive it's charm... staff are super friendly, but service is slow... I have no issue with a casual, relaxed and slow breakfast... BUT then I want my meal to be hot and divine... neither of which apply. The breakfast was stock standard with no flavor to the mushrooms ... the chicken livers were a huge let down... it seemed to be livers over cooked in cream with no spice, mmm maybe not even salt... the rosti which was a creative idea had an over powering taste of old oil... the scrambled eggs cooked so dry and lacking in every department... oh could have been cooked hours before and left to stand as they were cold... not planning on a return visit, as not even the best company in the world could make this meal shine...

The food was very average, not wow but not bad.

The service itself I could not find anything wrong, the kitchen itself was very slow as we had to wait 25 to 30 minutes for 2 standard burgers.

Great outdoor setting with fantastic play area for kids and tasty food. Don't order the chicken liver rosti basket though if you want it mild and not hot... because then they leave out the creamy chicken livers altogether and replace it with mushrooms. The waiter only informed us of this after the food arrived and we couldn't find a single chicken liver in the basket... or taste therof. In fact he had to go back to the kitchen to query this. Very bizarre!

What a lovely, tranquil setting to enjoy breakfast or lunch. Dine inside or outside. My favourite is the kaaings and pap! Delicious. And good service too.

Situated just north of Pretoria, the Green Olive can be found just off Sefako Makgatho Road. If outside dining is your thing then I would recommend this outing. Seated under the trees you can most definitely spend some social time here. Their menus offer a variety of Burgers, Wraps, Breakfasts, Salads etc. Their food is very tastefully prepared and they are not shy when it comes to portion size. You will be happy, satisfied and don't forget to ask about their options for your sweet tooth.

This was a good outing... breakfats menu looks a bit 'uhmm-n-aaah' but when the food arrived i was pleasantly surprised... portions were good and the coffee was very good!!! The setting is different than what we might be used to but very interesting as there's little shops and a nursery surrounding the place... tried the 'Oupa' breakfast that was served with Pap and Kaiings(traditional 'afrikaans' delicacy).. must say it hit the spot like totally.. will go there again... thumbs up from me!!!

If you're looking for a relaxing environment and not the typical mall restaurants, this place is ideal. Enjoyed great food under the trees while the kids had a ball at the large playground area. There is a very large area where the tables are spaced, so you're not bothered with constant noise from the neighbouring tables or cramped space with too many people. The waitress was excellent. We had breakfast (fried egg, bacon, toast etc). Quality and portion was very good. Will definitely visit again.

I have been here quite a few times because it shares the property with my favourite nursery, however the food is never the reason for my return. The menu is poor, the food is sad and the staff always looks as if they would rather be anywhere but at work. It is such a missed opportunity.

And upon my last return I am utterly disgusted. The breakfast was obviously cooked in unwashed pans and my breakfast had a burnt after taste. The waitress dropped my toast and went back to only put it on a new plate and bring my dropped cold toast back.

I did not want my niece to play at the play area as I can see that there is no maintenance (cleaning, safety etc) involved.

I will never return.

The Green Olive is rustic and old fashionedly decorated. It is true, children run around outside with gay abandon, making noise as children do! (No problem for me though!)
On a freezing afternoon, I had hot chocolate (✔️) and Waffle with cream and (maple?) syrup. Fresly made from their own batter and served warm, it was delicious.
The waitress was keen to do well and friendly. Portions are generous and easy on the pocket.
And, while you are there, do buy some coffee beans from their neighbour, The Red Truck Coffee Roastery!!

Deel van 'n kwekery uit op Sefaku Makgatho (Zambesi rylaan). Onopgesmuk met vriendelike diens en goeie kos. Die plek was gesellig vol op 'n Dinsdagmiddag. Lekker speelplek vir kinders.

A tea garden where you can enjoy breakfast while you put your children to play. Food okay and service atrocious.

Ambiance: This is a tea-garden-like restaurant, next to a nursery and with little shops and so. You also stand a very good chance to be surrounded with screaming and crying children.

Menu: The first important thing to mention about this restaurant is that they get very anxious when a group arrives. So much so that they do not hand you the full menu then, but a smaller menu with only three breakfast options. Average options are offered, limited vegetarian and vegan options. The prices on the Zomato app is outdated and went up in the meanwhile.

Drinks: Surprizingly few options. They also put so much ice in your glass, your tonic almost fill the glass.

Service: Shocking!! I was still busy to sit down, then the waiter wanted to know what I would like to drink - without giving me a menu. He was overall very arrogant and impatient. He did not know who ordered what - so he ended up standing on the side shouting "Green olive breakfast sunny side up". During this confusion, he litteraly started to shove the plates under people's noses asking "is this yours"? Food was sent back that was served cold, and some orders were not placed so we had to start eating without the other people on the table.

Food: The green olive breakfast is very good. Crispy rosti's, good combination with tomatoes and mushrooms. The French toast with brie, rocket and syrup should be a divince combination, but it was horrible. Pieces of egg are burnt on the sides, and they are very stingy with both the brie and syrup, so it does not work! Toast was put in the middle of the table which was four tables connected, so a mission to get to it.

Price: Some items are overpriced, given what you get.

I have seen that many people go to this place, but I cannot recommend it and I will not easily go there again until they sharpen up their staff and become better equiped.

This place is very pretty outside, however the food did not meet my expectations. We had the Sunday lunch Buffet due to the kitchen being behind by an hour. The buffet was so plain and boring. The lamb was dry and tasted like pork to me. Our waiter however was really nice. The desert was standard. Drinks and milkshake was really good. I would recommend this place for tea and coffee but not as a lunch or dinner date.

Me and a Friend went for lunch at the Green Olive yesterday, what an bad experience we had. We waited 25min for our drinks and a further 1.15min for our 2 Panini’s, the waiter (who was the only good thing) apologized and said the manager offer us some coffees on the house, after our meal, we ordered a Milo and a Cappuccino, but on our bill noting was credited.

They have such a lovely outside area, with a nice atmosphere and food, it is a pity that the service is so bad. You would expect the manager to at least come to the table if the customer has already waited for so long and offered a apology herself.

So if you are not hungry, and have a lot of time, and kids that want to play on the lovely outside play area, then do visit the Green Olive.

PS – a steak knife would be nice to have if you have order a steak and mushroom paninni.

Lovely setting, relaxed, nice play area for kids. I was rather disappointed at the service though. We waited nearly 25minutes for drinks and a further 40 minutes for our food. Food was good though.

Been at the Green Olive twice, and both times eveything was perfect! The food has a "special touch" and very good value for money .. and we've been looking for a "rustige" place to have lunch in pretoria...found it!will recommend to all my friends

This is a family orientated restaurant with designated area for children to play. Wonderful tranquil atmosphere to enjoy outside lunch. The owner himself gives a personal touch to the food. I highly recommend The green olive for couples and families.

This place is INSANE! It is a nursery, restaurant, coffee shop, gallery, knick knacks to buy, party venue - all rolled in one!

Their decor is cozy and lovely and paintings for sale are all over. In winter, they have a nice fire going inside the restaurant. The garden area is big and lovely.

Their food is insanely good! And different.

(10 September 2016) For brunch, I ordered the rosti baskets, filled with creamy chicken livers and scrambled eggs. Soooo yummy! My niece ordered the French toast with cheese, bacon and syrup and said it was gooood.

Of course we decided on dessert ... oh yes!!!! I ordered the chocolate and caramel cake ... what a creation!!!!!!! Real sweet and a real big portion, but soooooooooooooooo good!!!!!

My niece ordered the Red Velvet Cheesecake ... it was a big portion, was rich but oh goodness, sooo good! You have to order at least one of these cakes!!

(2 May 2015) Stopping at Green Olive, it really is a 'must visit' place! They have a whole upstairs area for private parties.

Hein had boerewors, pap, sous, eggs and cheese. It looked yummy and he said it was. I had a croissant with salmon and cream cheese. Oh my gosh. For R50, this was just amazing!!! It came with slices of green apple.

Pity this coffee shop is sooo far from Johannesburg ....

(July 2013) I had 2 Sun-Dried Tomato Waffles served for breakfast with egg and greens. Hein had Pap and Boerewors with tomato relish.

The presentation is just lovely, the food is different and very very good!!!

At the back, in-between the nursery, they have this 'browsing' area - you can find old pots/pans/wheel barrows - anything!

You have to visit the Green Olive!!
