Review Railways Cafe - Pretoria

Sara Lubis
One of the coolest and most favourite cafés in Pretoria! The place is dope ❤️‍🔥 I loved the vibes; the food was super delicious, the music was great, everything! The service was excellent. It's so comfy; it feels like home. And I love the fact that the place is huge, offers different styles of seating areas, and the live music completely rocks! 😎✌️

I loved the casual atmosphere, definitely seems like a place to be if you are looking for a reggae and beachfront vibe. The food is okay and well presented. There was definitely good energy and a vibe. The background music is great too.

Looking for an eclectic place to spend quality time with friends. The railway cafe ticks all of the boxes. The vibe is super fun. Decor is busy and creative and really interesting with eye catching features everywhere. The pizzas were delicious and the beers were cold. Nuff said.

What a hidden gem. This place was bustling with energy. Friendly staff with speedy service. The service was particularly fast, considering how busy it was for Spring Day. Thank you Railways Cafe for making our night a memorable one. I will definitely be returning here in the not too distant future.

We have been hanging out here for years and I can't believe I have not written something about this place before... Everytime we have been here with friends, family or just as a couple has been some of the best experiences we have ever had in Pretoria. This place never cease to amaze me with their selection of new and old school artist and DJs'. If you are looking for a place to just hangout, have some drinks, catch up with some friends, watch some sports or celebrate a birthday party, Railways Café is all of those places rolled into one...

What a huge space!!! Several different areas - quite a few big screen TV's and also an area with projector and screen. Artsy decorated - colorful and quirky! Wherever you look, something interesting catches your eye!!! A whole bath is mounted within the wall of 1 of the areas. Deon and Valerie enjoyed the Railway breakfast - Hein and I enjoyed the loaded fries as well as a ham & cheese sandwich. Fantastic service - fabulous food. We sat next to a small fireplace (1 of a few) and while Hein, Deon & Valerie watched the rugby game, I knitted a baby beanie.

Food is amazing!, worth the money! The vibe at this place is very cool!! 100% would recommend

ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS PLACE ! So chill and humble, especially if you are down to earth. There was also a witchy themed market where I got this insane hoodie !! Couldn't not get it. It was exactly my size. #berrymoon < check out their page on social media. Will be back on Sunday for round 2 ! Bringing my sister who just landed from the Netherlands 😁🥳💖

We had a booking for a room with our own private bar, perfect for the birthday celebration we were attending. The service and the pizza was great. The live music was a nice touch and created a festive atmosphere. We even got to see Koos Dup playing live, as one of the live bands. What a pleasure!

Great atmosphere, can't beat that anywhere. Arty feeling, very creatively decorated, interesting shops inside restaurant. Love the Post box Café with alternative food options. Music, comedy, game nights etc always great entertainment. Small play area for kids. Vegan options available on menu.

By far the best pizza I have ever tasted in my life!! Their nachos pizza is beyond heavenly!

Colorful, senses overload, tranquility, uniquely creative ♥️ Pizzas🍕and chips seems to be the most popular but don't discount any of their other delicious food items. Live music 🎶🎵is played on a small stage, children's play areas with parental seating is available. Some weekend days a market will be on the inside of the property as you walk through to get to the main restaurant area. Smoking is mostly inside but do have non smoking 🚭 a bit further away from all the action and hustling. Can become a jol later in the evening.

One of the nicest places I had a pleasure to frequent in Gauteng :) So creative, welcoming and fun! Every detail design-wise is so impressive and interesting, toilets included. There is always some content there so you would not be going only for drinks and food (live music, quiz nights, drag queens show and whatnot). And the people working there are so kind and positive! There is free parking in front of it, too. Prices are very accessible and quality of what you get is 👌

Had a really good time at Railways! The live entertainment was great and the drinks were good as well. I loved the aesthetic of the place and all-around vibe of the place. Will recommend it to anyone who wants to have a day out! Photos by Katherine Brits

The live entertainment was great and the aesthetic on point! Can highly recommend it to anyone who wants to have a day out with friends, plus the food was great too!

The rustic, laid back atmosphere is the perfect setting for good live music, great selection of drinks and delicious pizza on a Sunday. Service is always friendly and fast. Thursday night quiz nights are great fun with an hilarious host.

Thanks for sharing! Calamari, chicken strips flatbread with sauce trio as an extra (mahala) bonus! Love the live music on aSunday! #chilleatrelax

Me and my fiancé love the place , great pizza , great music and great vibes.

But we googled to see what time they would be open, showed up at the indicated time and they were closed on multiple occasions, leaving us very disappointed.

(Proof in screenshots below)

I enjoyed myself at Railways Cafe. It's got a very laid back ambiance, quite hippy-like.

Had their double biltong pizza (forgot the name). It was superb! I'll definitely have it again.

The reason why I give Railways Cafe 3 instead of 4 out of 5 is for two reasons:
1 - I had to pay to enter. We paid R100 for a Live Performance that we didn't know about. 🤷🏿‍♂️
2 - The superb pizza took over an hour to make. And then it was "lost" then "found" before being chowed. 🤦🏿‍♂️
We had a great time at Railways. The vibe is artsy and relaxing during the day. We ordered some tapas and a pizza to share.
The pizza was hands down one of the best pizzas we have had in a long time.
The chicken strips and pumpkin fritters were quite dry and over cooked. Maybe just a suggestion would be so serve drinks in glasses during the day, as my plastic cups had cracks and wrinkles in like they have already been used.
We have been to Railways twice in the last month. I really love how unique the decor and look & feel are. The stage with live music looks awesome with hundreds of books as wall art.
The runners/waiters system is a bit slow and confusing. I ordered the bbq chicken wings. They were super dry and tasteless. We also ordered the meaty pizza which was okay. We didn’t finish the pizza or the wings. Although the menu looked delicious and very attractive, the food was terribly disappointing.
I will definitely return for the vibe and drinks at night, but I won’t order food again.

Thoroughly enjoy Railways every time we visit. Best wood fried pizza. The atmosphere is relaxed and fun. Great live music with great artists.

We went to the Railways Cafe on Sunday 29 April because we wanted to hear the Black Cat Bones who were playing there. We had never heard of the Railways Cafe and living in Joburg, traveling to Centurion for lunch seemed a ridiculous idea. But we are so happy that we did go ... What a wonderful, happy experience, a delightful find!
My friend and I shared a Tapas platter that we put together - everything on the platter was delicious especially the meatballs which are without doubt the best I have ever tasted and the coriander pesto!!! if they'd given me a teaspoon that's how I would have eaten it.
We had a wonderful time the staff were so friendly every single person we met was helpful and kind ... we will very definitely be back

Interesting spot. Eclectic at best, or at worst a bit weird in a cool way. Decor is whatever they could find in the second-hand store, and they just decided to hang it up. Nice calm reggae-style music over the speakers, and waiters to match! 😃

Had a pizza for lunch. Fitting to the surroundings, it was square. Very yummy, lots of topping.

This little spot is worth looking for.

Very authentic!!! Great for going out with friends and enjoying their company all while being surrounded by art and culture. I've visited the venue several time and each visit was pleasant and unique in its own way. My advise would be to sit im the big bird cage when you go, it's perfect fir a small group of friend wanting to catch up ☆☆☆☆

This place is extremely rustic, and I feel like you need to be quiet open minded when visiting Railways. It's definitely not somewhere you go to in high heels and a dress! It's a jeans and t-shirt kind of place, where you go to enjoy live music, great food and a couple of sneaky drinks or 5...

The decor is something else! There is something in every corner of this joint which can keep you busy for hours! It seems a bit messy and all over the place, but if you aren't a fussy person you could really enjoy it! The vibe this place gives off is great.

The service is definitely not something to brag about - however everything else is awesome! Great atmosphere and great pizzas!

I went here to show my Fiancé and I was really disgusted at how filthy the place is. I have been here at night time but never really paid attention or had a meal.

The furniture needs serious maintenance, especially if furniture is made of material.

The food was absolutely horrible and I cannot actually believe someone would serve that to anybody. I literally felt sick and refused to eat the platter so I ordered a pizza instead which was OK.

The platter said "Caprese" skewers and we got cheddar and Rosa tomatoes ( Caprese means basil, tomato and mozzarella)

The chicken was still frozen in the middle and the strips were old and stale and the "pampoen koekies" were soggy.

It makes me quite sad to think that the vibe and location of this place is really awesome.

Never again.

I've been wanting to try this restaurant out for the past year. I went there on a cold winter night...not the best idea ever because they don't provide blankets and most of the seating is out in the open.
The menu didn't entirely appeal to me so I ordered the Cockadoo pizza with beef and mushrooms as additional toppings. The pizza was tasty.
Service from our waiter Shadrack was phenomenal. Unique concept and all but I recommend you visit this place on a sunny day because there isn't much covered or indoorsy seating.
Jaco Moolman
Good vibes and good food,

The atmosphere is rustic and there's a lot of strange decor around, lots of couches to recline on.

At the performance hall there are three additional long tables where you can sit down and listen to the bands, although, reserving one of these tables means no conversion if there are loud bands playing.

Plenty of variety on the menu and some interesting recipes!
Be sure to ask a waiter before ordering as some of it doesn't come with too much of a description!

A hipster hangout for alternative and unusual people.

The decor is unusual and unique and absolutely fascinating.
The restaurant often hosts local bands but unfortunately the seats are all broken and wore out.

The service is non-existent and i would actually rather suggest eating before you go there as it is not abnormal to wait an hour to take your order let alone receive it.

The operations are terrible and you cant pay with cash. The drinks are cheap but value for students and budgets.

Overall the vibe is great and the spaces to chill are plentiful, just don't go with any expectations and you'll have a fantastic time.

Love the pizza here. The comedy nights on thursdays are so awesome. A real 'hipster' vibe. Follow them on facebook to get info on the awesome events

We went to Railways during the weekend... Well let's just say they will be seeing us this coming weekend as well!!
The beer is great, the pizza is just delicious. I enjoyed the staff as everyone was very friendly and they call you by your name. We spoke to one of the staff members and he told us that it's the best place to work and every week there is something different and new - I appreciate positive staff members. The only negative, unfortunately, we waited forever to get a menu. Other than that I will go there week after week. Great Vibe great People*

This is the ultimate hangout spot in the Centurion area. Chilled vibe and very hipster(but the unpretentious kind). They screen movies, have live music and the staff is very friendly. Food is amazing with a great menu. Service can be slow as the seating arrangements are very open and you can move around constantly. Not really a crit. It adds to the chilled atmosphere. Can't wait to go back.

Railways feels like a holiday. You leave the place so energized and refreshed.

Been here a few times so think a review is in order now.
Their service is great. Although the place is pact during shows the food comes out quick. Their pizza's are good.

The decor and vibe is so unique. Great place

The pizza we ordered came burned to the table and the stew was way to salty! The waiters had to be called for and never asked if we are happy with the food. The venue is something different and reggae like atmosphere was interesting.

Railways Cafe is a different but incredibly awesome place to have a relaxing day or a big jol! There's always something new when I come here. It could be paintings, a new cool drink to try or a live performance by an unusual but entertaining band. I highly recommend you give this place a try!😊

Last night was the second time we went to this place, and the bar service is REALLLLLY SLOW, VERY VERY EXPENSIVE FOR ALL TYPES OF DRINKS!!! food took very long, and it wasn't even busy! Only cards acceptable makes it really hard to buy only one drink or whatever, and I don't like opening tabs, had to swipe my card a lot. Bar tenders did not even know they had sponsor tables or what I'm taking about!

Right at the entrance to Irene Station, in a quiet cul-de-sac, you will find Railways Cafe. A special place - whymsical, quiant, unsusual. An arty blend of re-used furniture and artifacts. Plenty of small kuierplekkies / seating areas. A mix of pawnshop, art atudio, farmyard and antique shop. Bob Marley pumping in the background.
Friendly and casual service. Filling, tasty food to soak up the drinks.
At late afternoon, before the evening crowds, it is a peaceful place. Huge old trees hide the railway line.
I had a pizza with fluffy pap (yes! Maize meal portidge) seshebo (sweetish tomato & onion relish) and grated cheddar. Unusual and delicious.
Things get real busy & crowded. Consequently you have to leave your car keyes if you want a tab. No cash, only cards can be used for payment.
Go see for yourself!

This was a completely new and different experience from what you get at your average cafe. The set up has classic junk yard feel to it which freshing and different. We were not constantly bothered by the waiter. We had a selection of finger foods which were very tasty and well priced for the quality and quantity we received. I would recommend it as a lunch spot

This place is the business! Such a relaxed vibe and atmosphere. Rustic and hipster but the food is amazing! Classy entertainment - the perfect place for mates.

The food tasted stale and was not very fresh. The staff and manager were very friendly :) lovely decor and vibe. Will be back to try pizza and some cocktails.

Bohemian. That's the first word that comes to mind when you walk in. From the easygoing waiters, to the eclectic furniture and interesting collection of bric-a-brac and a live band...you're sure to feel cheerful.
Their burgers are well prepared and we enjoyed their sweet potato chips. This is a "cool" hangout spot for a casual outing.

Used to be one of my favourite spots for either a great evening with live music, or a chilled weekend breakfast/lunch until one Sunday... Railways Cafe brags about their Sunday hangover breakfast, but when one actually wants to go for it, the manager arrives late, the staff could not care less to attend to you and you end up spending an hour waiting, with an empty stomach, and then eventually leaving. Not cool. A 3 for good memories in the faaaar past

Beautifully intresesting, love the decor! There is something to look at after every corner, I really enjoyed the atmosphere, everyone was friendly and polite. The que at the bar wasn't to long and the service was quite fast.

We went to watch a show and the inside was nice and warm.
They had people walking around showing paintings that are for sale, and I also heard that there is a art in the park somedays, would definitely want to go and see that.

You can either pay with card or by token? Yes you have to swop your cash for tokens - at the end of the night you can swop your tokens for cash again, ulyou better not get toooo partied-up and forget your money! Haha, but the tokens are valid for a month, or something like that.

Great vibe. Love the awesome arty feel. Makes one want to open a bottle of wine immediately. The food was ok, a bit dissapointed. Was better before the cafe was renovated. Bring back to the crispy famous pizza.

Absolutely love the whole arty vibe!!
Entertainment inside, warm fire areas outside... bath tubes and trolleys have been converted into comfy chairs. I had the pleasure of watching Skinnee Sunrise with awesome company. Their drink specials are amazing. I did not have the pleasure of tasting the pizza- the kitchen was closed. I do not like the idea that your moola is valid for one night only though! Railways will definitely see me again!

Spent the evening last night watching some really cool bands play here. Really like the environment, the food, the drink, and the people. Really don't like the hangover. Thanks Railways. I got no work done today at all.

Wow, my new favorite hangout! Railways is probably every arty person's cup of tea! Extremely creative venue. Every bit of it is art. From bath tub chairs to bottle cap mosaic steps. They can serve anything and people would still visit! The cold evening was warmed up by bonfires in beautiful bins and a musician with a Janis Joplin "camel filter" voice. Surprisingly good food. They mainly serve pizzas and burgers, so vegetarians are slightly limited. Portions are VERY generous and the staff casually friendly. Definitely a place I'd recommend to someone looking for a good night out.
