Review Matsuya - Pretoria

Well well well, what can I say, entrance is not appealing to attract customers, we actually walked in here looking for one of our family members and guess what, we were blown away with the chef who cooks your meal in front of your eyes. The food is amazing and does not leave you full till you want to throw up. Will definitely visit this place on a few occasions. What an amazing experience. Go try it, you will love it

This restaurant is absolutely amazing and I loved my meal here. It felt like I was transported to Japan when I walked in. The atmosphere, service and food was incredible and I can't wait to go back! The vegetable spring rolls were exceptional (along with everything else we ordered!)! Matsuya is a must try! The staff was very welcoming and friendly. The edamame was fresh, the salmon California rolls were good, the shrimp tempura was delicious, the udon in the udon miso soup was not great and the miso soup was not that good. Overall a good experience. I'm looking forward to teppanyaki the next time I go there.

Brilliant evening. Went for our anniversary dinner and had wonderful, authentic Japanese cuisine. Excellently trained waiting staff and the chef availed himself to greet us when we left. Will defiantly go back. Will request that the sushi pieces be cut in half as to be more bite sized... 😉

Great food, friendly staff, and a warm atmosphere. The traditional Japanese cuisine is spectacularly good. A great place to visit whether you're on a romantic date, an evening out with friends, or having a family get-together.

The food was amazing and the portions are quite big. I struggled to finish my dish because of the portion but I am not complaining 😁.

Food was absolutely tasty and amazing. First Benton box I've ever had and must say it was really food. Can't wait to try the other dishes on the menu. Staff and owner are very friendly and very helpful.

One of the most delicious meals I've ever had in my life, worth every cent!

An amazing food experience! Authentic Japanese food with fresh fresh fresh sushi and incredible value for money. At first glance the menu is daunting and looks pricey but the portion sizes make pricing very reasonable. Flavorsome and fresh. Will definitely be back to eat my way through this menu!

Most delicious sushi ever. The fish to rice ratio is next to perfection. The fish is fresh and tastes amazing. Authentically Japanese. The dishes are on the more expensive side but the quality and portion is decent. If you're looking for a restaurant that feels Japanese, look no further. Loved the environment.. beautiful environment. Amazing atmosphere. Wonderful service. No complaints. Like I said the price range is on the higher side but it's worth it.

High standards and fresh ingredients from a cosy family restaurant. I will always go back there! Thank you for the friendly service.

Variety of food! Good quality! Competitive prices! Great service. Love going to this Japanese restaurant. Highly recommended. It's quite an experience to have their hot pot amongst friends! Lots of fun cooking your own food.

Great, huge menu. I had the shabu shabu and it was delicious. It included this peanut sauce which we looooooved. The veggie spring rolls were really good too. I can't wait to go back and try more food!

Best restaurant I have been to in a long time the owner is such a wonderful man he took such good care of us and let us watch him while he fried our meal in front of us. The food was delicious, the ramen and sirloin steak with noodles were so tasty,me and my son had an amazing experience we will definitively come back again and again.

By far the best selection of japanese food in Pretoria. Most "Japanese" restaurants have a menu full of sushi and chinese dishes but not at Matsuya. You will find a very diverse selection of food, their sushi selection is extensive. However I would suggest you check how busy they are, many of the dishes are fish or chicken, both can easily go off, make sure there is enough throughput to make sure everything is fresh.

My husband and I treated ourselves to some Japanese cuisine this past Sat evening. We ordered the Ginger Pork Set Menu. It all tasted delicious and the service was good but unfortunately the food landed up causing stomach issues for the best part of the week. The manager was quite rude when I called to let him know that something in the kitchen needed seeing to. Probably won’t go back.

What a fantastic taste of Japan! Dinner at Matsuya feels incredibly authentic. The gorgeous wooden teppenyaki tables are inviting, and traditional decor makes the experience quite special.

The restaurant is neat and the staff is superbly friendly and helpful. The food and drink menu is extensive, and each menu item looks phenomenal.

The gyoza served here is mouth-wateringly good. It is served with a vinagered soy sauce that complements the fried exterior of a wonderfully flavoured dumpling. The yakiniku beef is absolutely sublime, and is served with some pickles, miso soup and divinely fluffy white rice. It is definitely worth a try. The matcha ice-cream is delicious as well, it's well worth every bite.

I will definitely have to return, there is still so much that has to be eaten!
Great Japanese restaurant serving up authentic food.

Atmosphere and Decor: The decor is certainly not anything to behold but this doesn’t detract from the authentic feel of the restaurant.

Service: Wait-staff could be more attentive for sure but everyone is very friendly and helpful.

Food: We usually order the Shabu Shabu which is a Japanese hotpot into which you stir raw, thinly sliced pieces of beef which cook almost instantly. This is a really fun and tasty meal to share with a few friends.

Overall this is a great restaurant with a comprehensive menu.

Fantastic food, authentic atmosphere. We visit Matsuya every week! Handsdown the best sushi in Pretoria. Would highly recommend to anyone and everyone!

Great food, very tasty. A nice Japanese experience! We had the Bento box and the hot plate with beef, both very good. Service was good, although it took a bit long before we were served.

I usually get take away Sushi and the Sushi is consistently excellent with overly generous portions. The prices may seem expensive, but it's actually great value.

Matsuya is a relatively traditional Japanese restaurant which we frequented when in Pretoria. There isn't much of a vibe and the restaurant is usually quite empty. The food is never very consistent, but it was always somewhat good.

From our ventures, we have tried the Okonomiyaki (Japanese pizza), Mr Yangs Bento, yaki udon, ramen noodles and the onigiri (rice ball).

Okonomiyaki is a favourite of ours; it is a thick and cakey pancake with an assortment of seafood filling, ranging from fish to calamari. The filling always varied depending on the availability of certain seafoods. The pizza is topped off with a sauce and bonito flakes.
Mr Yangs bento is an off menu item, although pricey, it has pretty good value. The bento box has sushi, sashimi, tempura, braised beef, grilled salmon belly, and comes with a side of miso soup. This is enough to share between two. The yaki udon is never very consistent, but is always good in it's own way. The portion size is perfect for one and the taste is always of a certain standard.

We recently decided to try the ramen and the onigiri. This was the worst experience we've had at Matsuya.

The ramen used seemed to be from cheap/old instant noodle packets and the broth was savoury and like a very mild miso soup, but did not taste of much overall. The rice ball was not as expected in shape or taste. The rice used was long-grain and flavourless, but the dried fish filling was quite tasty.

On this most recent visit of ours, we also discovered that many of the items on the menu have been hit by a rather large price increase. The prices on Zomato no longer reflect the actual prices.

I wanted to check out this place for a while, but sadly it didn't wow me in any way. The food was lovely, but not the best I'd had. I had the fried calamari and noodles, and my brother had the ramen bowl. He was also slightly disappointed at the blandness of the dish. I must say though, the sauce that came with my calamari was amazing. I have no idea what it was, but it's definitely got a soy sauce base. Sadly without the sauce it was quite tasteless though. My favourite part of the experience was definitely the deep fried ice cream for dessert. That was definitely a winner. Overall not a bad place, but definitely not what we were expecting for the price.

Matsuya in Parkview is one of the few (if not the only) authentic Japanese restaurants in Pretoria. They have been around since 1994. They are famous for their Teppenyaki.

We decided on some sushi as we already knew we wanted the fried ice cream for dessert.

It was really well prepared and also looked appealing.

The fried ice cream was the best I had to date.

It is only a pity that they were really very quiet. In my opinion the recent renovations at Parkview took a very high toll as many restaurants are suffering and some even closed down.

The staff and owner/manager are really friendly and helpful.

Our view is that they are a bit on the expensive side, but still worth a visit.

The servers were quietly friendly and pleasant enough. The spring rolls were very tasty and although the sweet and sour chicken was a little bit too much it was still quite nice. Will frequent them fir the occasional takeaway but the mood of the restaurant decor is just a bit too dark for me.

If you are in search of a Japanese experience, Matsuya will be your best bet. It won't be for everyone but let me assure you that if you are adventurous you won't be disappointed.

The menu can be overwhelming especially of it is your first time. If I am ever asked where the best sushi can be found, it is at Matsuya. For the hungry in seek of variety, bento boxes are very filling and can be a good introduction to Japanese cuisine.

I will admit that I have not eaten at Matsuya often enough to try their teppanyaki grill but it looks amazing. Next time ;)

The restaurant is spacious and open, and yet each table gives a feeling privacy.

Overall, I am impressed by the quality of food at Matsuya and will definitely be back for more. I will however say it again, Matsuya offers more authentic Japanese food and won't be to everyone's liking.

Matsuya has been around forever. From their Brooklyn days, then Silver lakes, back to Brooklyn and now in Parkview shopping centre. Nothing has changed in all the years. Still the best authentic Japanese food in Pretoria. The owner is handson with everything. Their vegetable tempura, any sushi or sashimi and the teppanyaki table( the fillet or salmon is my favourite) is certainly worth coming back for again & again.

Simply the best Sushi restaurant in Pretoria. Portions are generous and well presented. The price might be a little higher than most other Sushi restaurants but it is well worth it.

We were pleasantly surprised by this Restaurant upon our first visit there. We had the Steak and Prawn Teppanyaki at the chefs table. We were thrilled with the Chef preparing our meal in front of us and his antics. The food was fresh and delicious. I absolutely enjoyed the egg fried rice and our Japanese themed evening in our kimonos. Will definitely go back soon!

Authentic Japanese cuisine is exactly what you can expect from Matsuya. It's not a beautiful restaurant but most Asian restaurants aren't and in comparison it's really nice however the food, the service and the price are great!

I haven't eaten here in years, but on my recent visit to Pretoria sought them out only to find that they have moved from waterkloof centre to the soulless and ostentatiousness of woodhill. How sad that this previously elegant Japanese gem has to be housed in such a terrible monstrosity. This building is no doubt the architectural mastermind of pompous property developers who have no clue about aesthetics. Nevertheless, the food was excellent, albeit too much. Japanese food is meant to be shared. So vest to go with a party of good friends.

One of my 1st dates with hubby was at Matsuya's old location in Brooklyn, 7 years ago. The vibe is less intimate at the much bigger Parkview centre. The excellent quality of the food has, however, not changed in all these years. We love that it's run by the same Japanese family, making it a refreshing & authentic experience compared to the many franchise joints.

I highly recommend the Teppanyaki for a fun experience with friends & family for special occasions, where the chef cooks your meals on the griddle. Dinner & a show! There's a small selection of Asian beers, juices & of course sake. The sushi is always fresh and flavourful and the Suki Yaki is fun. I didn't love the tonkatsu (crumbed pork cutlet) - it was like a very dry schnitzel. Unfortunately there's no Japanese dishes like dango or Takoyaki on the menu.

Matsuya is my favourite restaurant for Japanese food in Pretoria. They serve s authentic Japanese fair - fresh sushi, crispy tempura prawns, bento boxes and a full on teppanyaki table. The menu is quite intimidating, though there are a range of set menu options to make choicies easier. I celebrated a birthday here and booked out the teppanyaki table for our large group, which is a really good idea as it is a fun experience watching the chef prepare the teppanyaki. The beef teppanyaki is amazing! The prawn teppanyaki is great too. My vegetarian friend had the veg bento box and raved about it.

I've eaten here numerous times and have never been disappointed. The food and service have been consistently good. I like that they complimentary fruit plate at the end of your meal. The staff is always friendly and pleasant. It's a shame that the last few times I've been there the restaurant has been really empty.

Really enjoyed the service. They go that little bit extra with warm towels and fresh fruit to cleanse your pallet afterwards. I am going to have to go again to experience the live cooking
