Review Baobab Cafe - Pretoria

Terrence DIkobe
Baobab Cafe & Grill, the particular one I am talking about is situated in Menlyn ✨ 😋😋The food was delicious 😋😋 I must say complements to the chef or chefs 👩‍🍳👨‍🍳 The restaurant is very accommodating. One can choose to dine inside or outside the restaurant both are aesthetically pleasing in my opinion. The music playing in the background was relaxed and the lighting in this place is perfect ✨ Enough with the words let the pictures say it all.

It is such a lovely place for everything The staff is amazing and caring The food,is delicious as it looks The environment is “giving”🤣🤣 and even for solo dates I recommend it. It is affordable because the food is a lot I strongly recommend it

The restaurant is very big and beautiful, amazing views from outside and great service. They serve big portions and the atmosphere is very vibrant. It’s a great place to celebrate kids birthdays and special occasions.

Really nice food, the stuff is friendly, what worries me is the constant checking, they should at least check up twice and be close by to attend if the is an issue. The mala mogodu is nice i would recommend this african meal coz u can never go wrong 🥳. Great atmosphere and a great view

One of my all time favourite date night restaurants. Delicious food, awesome service and an overall great atmosphere. Take yourself, partner or family out for a tender steak or juicy burger, whatever you decide you will not be disappointed! Add in a delicious cocktail and your night is made!

I loved everything about the Cafe & Grill. There was nice music playing, the food was amazing and the service was also great thanks to our waiter Oswell.

What a wonderful place to be for breakfast, lunch, etc, on the 14th I was there with my wife since she was celebrating her birthday 🎂 🥳 🎉, she was so excited from the entrance, inside the restaurant, their foods and drinks How can I forget the lady in a name of Dipuo who was our waiter , she was outstanding, she made us to enjoy our time more Peaceful restaurant, they also have meetings & large groups celebrating space

Amazing atmosphere, it is very calming and fancy. I would recommend sitting outside so you can look over the city from the top of Menlyn. We had delicious fillit steak. 10/10 would recommend 👌🏻 ✨️✨️❤️

Everything about this restaurant is amazing. From the friendly service when you walk into the door to their deliciously well cooked meals. Definitely worth visiting when you get the chance to 👌

I don't even know where to begin... The service was absolutely outstanding!!! Food was out of this world! We had Springbok Carpaccio and Crumbed Mushrooms. I had the Oxtail as a main and my husband had a fillet. For dessert we shared the Cheesecake! Yummy 😋 Best Cheesecake we've ever eaten!!!! Thank you for an amazing meal

I cannot complain about a single thing. Let's start at the entrance.. There are 2 - 4 people there to greet and sit you down with a great attitude and a friendly smile. When seated you are presented with two menus, the food and the drinks one. There is an upstairs, an inside, an outside and a balcony. The bathrooms are something else. Clean, massive and easy to find. Well situated too no matter where you sit. They serve a sort of a unique style of food, the atmosphere itself is very much African inside and so is the food. They have beers, steaks, potjie, seafood, desserts, etc. The average prices on the menu for a meal is anything from R 85 - R 130 + depending on what you are getting of course. Everything on the menu is worth the price, trust you are getting your moneys worth. Staff are super on it, incredibly fast and crazy friendly. They also take initiative. There's also a manager available everywhere you look. The kitchen staff are super on it too. They make the most amazing food and output great quality.

It’s a very beautiful and versatile place, great for afternoon drinks with some chilled music in the background. The service was awesome but the food didn’t meet my expectations.

Ideal venue if you don't mind paying the mandatory parking fee for Menlyn mall. Spacious, great views, versatile for an intimate dinner, large groups, formal dinning or casual lunch. Has a bar area, a private section, booths and normal restaurant setup. Menu is a combination of western and South African favorites. Meat, poultry and fish are all well prepared. Service will keep you coming back. Only personal drawback is that it's not kid friendly.
Nomathemba Zungu
Well my best friend decided to spoil me on my birthday and i have to say we had fun. The place is stunning and the view outside is incredible, the waiter was so humble, he went the extra mile for us to enjoy.
Amanda Zipho Konkota
I really had a nice dinner 🍽 😋 there. The service was great.
Wisane Mashele
The restaurant is very beautiful the outside and top roof is also beautiful, their food is tasty though sides are charges separately. The loo is upstairs so careful after having a few drinks if your seated downstairs.
Kabelo Mokoena
Great joint to hangout at, almost everything is on point from the setup, to the food and service top notch, but a definite NO when it comes to the music.

We always looked forward to a meal at Baobab ...unfortunately our experience on Friday evening was very disappointing. We ordered the peri peri chicken and prawn. The meal was far from that. The chicken had no flavour with very little basting of any. It was not peri peri either. The prawns also didnot hve any peri peri flavour. We have eaten this item many times before and it was always good. The service could have been better. There were not enough sauces to go around so the waiter brought us an almost empty bottle of sauce and before we could use it they had to take it away to another customer. At the empty tables close by there were cutlery thrown on the floor. It seems that although the store was not busy the staff could not cope.
Johannes Di Morelo'o Motloung
I absolutely love coming here, the food is amazing and the mood is just perfect. I would recommend anyone who would love to taste a piece of Africa to come here! I would also recommend that they should better train some of their waiters, some are absolutely awesome while other are not as ingaging...

I loved every thing about baobao cafe and grill menlyn the staff the food and the place every thing 4 me there is superb. Good things always comes to those who wait
Bongani Masuluke
For my first time at this particular restaurant for my birthday dinner with my girlfriend, I really did think that their service was so welcoming and entertaining. I try not to let small things disturb my dinner outings and I must say, there were no small hiccups but one which was the waiting part for the waiter to come take our order but either than that I loved it loved it loved and would definitely go back there again.

The view is best during a Summer thunder/lightening storm, or for watching the sun go down. We’ve always experienced lovely staff, great burgers, and ace drinks.
Billy Kanjere
It was the best moment of my life. The place is awesome. Really good !!!
Des Pitori Bohula
I enjoyed the service there guys m impressed its a very nice place thanks also to our waiter Makhosi thumbs up.

I’ve been here years ago, but this time it was amazing. Awesome food (maluti chicken), awesome nighttime view out on the deck, friendly waiters, blanket (was very appreciated!), and overall a fantastic evening! Well done guys 😄
Nicole
Nice establishment with good service and good food. I usually order the lamb curry with rice and am always happy. It’s quite tasty. Opt for an outside table for late afternoon lunches if the weather permits.
Lethabo Mokgatle
This place is really nice! Great ambiance, great atmosphere, friendly waiters. The menus has a variety of options to choose from. I had your seafood and it was nicely presented and very good!

I came here for Sunday brunch with my family . <br/><br/>Before even entering the place I really liked how secluded the restaurant is . The food court is always busy and because it’s the festive season it was way busier than usual . So the tranquility was much appreciated . <br/><br/>The outside area is gorgeous and has great lighting . So it made sense that it was full and we had to settle for an indoors table . The place overall is stunning . A lot of effort has clearly been put into creating the atmosphere . From the different types of walls ,ornaments on the sides, dimmed lights and decorated tables I could go on forever . The mini baobab chandeliers are a great link to the name of the restaurant. <br/><br/>The service was really exceptional. Our waiter did not disappoint, constantly checking on us without hovering over us . The champagne we wanted wasn’t available and the manager came to help us choose a second option similar to the one we wanted .<br/><br/>I’m the most indecisive patron . I really wanted seafood but a good steak as well . I was really happy to see there were dishes that have a variety for the meat and seafood lovers as well . So I had the sirloin ,prawn and calamari dish . The food was okay but it wasn’t out of this world . My sirloin was pretty dry on the inside and didn’t taste as good as it looked . The presentation of the food was quite messy and not appealing . <br/><br/>I was thoroughly impressed with everything until I had to go to the bathroom . And wow what a disgusting mess . Not clean at all ,the toilet seats weren’t stable. I did not expect that at all . <br/><br/>This place is really great in terms of atmosphere and decor . I can excuse the food because maybe other items on the menu are better . But the toilet situation for a such a high end establishment is a complete no . <br/><br/>It’s a great place overall but can improve on so much more . <br/><br/>

Visited this establishment again, and I'm glad to see the food is still great! The service is even better. I love how affordable it is, which makes it a very attractive option. It remains one of my favourite spots.
Nompumelelo Mpume Luvuno
I've been to many restaurants and this one has been the worst with regards to the service. The waiters are rude and arrogant. We had to wait a whole hour for the food and the waiter didn't even come to check if we're fine. I never leave the restaurant without tipping but this one I did. I wouldn't go back although the food is nice and the ambience

Decided to venture out of JHB today and found myself in Menlyn. Enjoyed a big, tasty meal at Baobab Cafe this afternoon. We ordered the Sirloin & Calamari with spinach and the Hake and Calamari with chips. Restaurant was really bustling and vibey. Oswell, our waiter gave us excellent service with a smile. Food and drinks where on the ball. If I find myself in Menlyn again, would be happy to return.
Busisiwe Sithole
Good food, service was not too bad. The ambience is amazing, it is such a tranquil more especially at night. I would definitely go again to try some of the interesting things they have on their menu.

This place will make you forget that you are still inside Menlyn mall, been here about 3 times, and each time was amazing. The atmosphere is great, there is different types of seating to accommodate different groups' needs, from quite and intimate to chilled relaxed outdoors.  The food was great. If you  really love meat, this is  the place to go to. There is quite a wide variety of stuff to choose from. The service was also great, I see myself coming here over and over again for that Maluti Chicken.
Emile Roux
Definitely a place I will return to. Upper deck great view of PTA East. Food also above average. Initial service need some touch up but after waiter was announced quality of service increased drastically
Lesego Les-kay Kutumela
The food was amazing, drinks were AMAZING. The service though was the opposite. We asked for a table in the smoking section where we waited almost 45 minutes for our drinks and to be seated at a proper table, eventually the manager made sure we got a table. When it was time to leave, our waiter demanded that we give him a larger tip on top of the generous 1 we had already given him.

Very nice restaurant if you love meat!! All the best cuts and great service...it has a view, albeit this is Pretoria so you'll mostly see city lights. I have had the chicken schnitzel as well as the sirloin, prawn and calamari...all delicious. For dessert...the most decadent choc mousse ever...very rich. Great eat.
Alroy Ndhlovu
Lovely restaurant. It really feels organic with the interior design geared towards making you feel like you're eating at the tree top. Food is affordable and amazing.
Thavashni Reddy
This a really big and busy restaurant. Having said that they have really great service so you don’t feel like a number. We were a table of 13, we had fish, prawns, chicken, steak and oxtail dishes. Every meal was perfect. Cooked well tasted good and best of all, the meals came out together. The prawns were delicious as was the oxtail.
Sivene
Good service, I hope it’s this good during peak, excellent food and a great variety of food. I’m from East London but I’ll be coming back here tomorrow!!

Really nice service. The food was delicious. The menu is homely and warm. I love love this place. The view is beautiful too. I definitely recommend 🌸
Thabang Mabala
An amazing resturant with an amazing view. The service was implacable. I enjoyed their sushi and their lamb shank. They also served the best rib eye I've ever introduced to my palette. A great place for a date or family dining. I would definetly be visiting again.
Bongiwe Nyambi
This restaurant is so beautiful. I loved the ambiance. Our service was below par given that the restaurant only had a few patron. The starter arrived together with the main, so it was a 2 in 1 situation. Had sushi for a starter and it tasted nice. Between my date and I, we had ribs and steak. Tasted good. Beautifully made steak, a bit hard handed on the salt for the ribs but really scrumptious. Had to wait for too long for our water order which again, service on an empty restaurant. I'll try it again for a hearty meal but they can do better.
Georgette Brook
My husband has been saying we should come here for a while. So glad we did! The food was amazing for the price! From seafood to chicken to meat, it is all fantastic. There is a very cool vibe and view with a convenient location and friendly staff. I would totally give it a visit 😊

Consider your current idea of fine dining. <br/>Now forget about it completely until you visit Baobab Cafe and grill. <br/><br/>The instant you enter Baobab, you forget completely that you're inside a mall. <br/>Try not to take too deep breathes as you are pleasantly escorted to your table of choice. The entire restaurant has an African styled theme accompanied with a low lit ambiance for a more intimate quality of conversation. <br/>To top this off the view from the balcony offers a pleasant view of the now up market menlyn region of pretoria. <br/><br/>The waiters are attentive and fun, graciously greeting you with a friendly smile that made me feel welcome. I must admit though, they did get my order slightly wrong, and I was surprised when the wrong dish appeared before me. I was however, pleasantly surprised at how quickly the problem was rectified and how well the waiters handled the situation - making sure that that the customer was indeed happy. <br/><br/>The highlight of baobab - the menu. <br/>Undoubtedly one of the most diverse menus I've seen around. Ranging from steaks, to sea food, to lamb chops and even Thai green curries served in excessively large potjie pots. <br/><br/>Cocktails were made up to our expectations and Baobab even sports a great little bar area for those looking for slightly louder conversation. <br/><br/>My overall opinion is that this is a great restaurant for the price tag. You can enjoy a nice intimate dinner with great service in a comforting atmosphere, while staring at the pretoria night lights, all for a reasonable price. Baobab is certainly a favourite and a must visit for all.

Spend New Year’s eve having a meal and a few cocktails with friends. What a lovely restaurant. I ordered the sushi and boy, was that good!!!! Best I had in a long time! We received a complimentary bottle of JC le Roux from the mall which was such a nice touch! We all enjoyed our evening a lot and the service was also excellent. Thanks for making my last meal of 2017 such a good memory!
Awande Mngadi
Craving a good grill my cousin and I headed to Menyln Park's Baobab for a meaty meal. We were pleasantly surprised to find an offering of gin cocktails, seemingly the people's new favourite choice (myself included). I had the ribs and wings, my food tasted amazing soft and beautifully basted. The service was kind and attentive. And the restaurant always feels warm and I am constantly transported to somewhere far from the loud and bright mall just outside.
Pamela Hill
A definite favorite in Menlyn for a decent meal and drinks. The view from the deck at night is gorgeous, and the decor is chic and contemporary. I had a glass of Beyerskloof Pinotage and service was swift as we explained that we had limited time. The waiters were kind, offering blankets on a rainy evening. I definitely prefer coming here instead of the other establishments offered by the mall.<br/><br/>---<br/>Update: after a second visit to Baobab, I have adjusted my rating. The service was attentive to the point of being annoying, checking in on us at least 10 times during the course of the evening, and then disappearing when we wanted to pay the bill. I had the lamb curry plus a glass of Durbanville Hills Cab Sav, both of which were delicious. The curry was definitely overpriced.

I’ve always loved Baobab in Menlyn. The view is awesome , with a very relaxing vibe . The staff are always friendly , the service is good and the food is always very good .
Jenine Botma
I love their intimate seating and love how When you sit outside they give you blankets for your legs. The food is always good and there's a versatile menu to choose from.
Thobile Motswene
The food was absolutely delicious great vibes like the set up. The menu was very broad and caters for pretty much everyone young and old. Certainly will be going back there again for the third time.

We were promptly received and taken to our booked table on Friday evening. Our waiter was attentive and friendly. Between us we ordered a pan fried pepper fillet and a chicken breast stuffed with spinach and feta, bacon and wrapped in phillo pastry with sundried tomatoes and wine sauce. Well, what a perfect fillet, superbly fried to medium, in a glorious butter sauce! Enjoyed every morsel. The chicken was great too. Thanks for a wonderful evening.

Authentic African décor, seating that caters for a romantic dinner or an outing with friends. Very friendly staff and management and overall good service. We had a tasty meal and good recommendations from our waitress. Charming view of the city lights from the balcony seating.
Thendo Mathobo
It's a very beautiful restaurant, the waiters are welcoming and really nice. We sat by the balcony, it was a bit cold but they gave us blankets to keep ourselves warm. Great place to be if you want to have a great time. And the food is delicious 😋
Kamogelo Mogale
Was here a while back celebrating my friends 21st and the vibe itself was great. The waiters we were assigned were beyond awesome but the food was below average. Majority of us ordered livers as a starter, the chisa nyama as our mains and cheese cake as our dessert. The starter was bland at most, the meat took about an hour to come and was mostly burnt. Not only was the chicken burnt on the outside but it was also raw. Dessert was nice. Overall I would definitely go back for the vibe but not in a group of more than 5.
Bongane
Good food, great view had a bone <br/>Marrow and fries. Wasn't my first time there wanted to experiment with the menu and I ended up trying the bone marrow i did enjoy it
Jana Venter
Great great service. good food. they really go the extra mile to please their clients. I went a tiny bit off menu and they accommodated me so nicely since it was my anniversary.
Nikita Cloete
I have some great experiences and then some not so great experiences, but overall I always go back. The Springbok Carpaccio rolls are to die for and nobody makes honey mustard sauce like that!
Dirk Kotzee
Delicious, with great service. Starter of Camembert in filo on cranberry reduction was the highlight of the evening! Friendly knowledgeable service.
Larissa Lubbe
Always eat great food and we make a point to try new meals every time- which never disappoints! The service is great, always and we love the whole atmosphere of the restaurant! The pan fried fillet is definitely a must-try and their meals are its money's worth. Will go again soon.

We chose Boabab for a birthday celebration and had a table reserved for 17 people. The only drawback that I had with this is that there was only one waiter for the whole table which made it difficult for us and for the waiter. <br/><br/>Other than that we had an amazing dinner and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their food. There is a wide variety of choices on the menu and everything looked delicious. <br/><br/>The tempura prawn starter was a winner!! Definitely a recommendation for foodies..... Maybe on the pricey side but the food is of a high quality and is more than worth it.

If you are in need of a view, good food and a spot to enjoy your sundowners, the Baobab is a sure place to be. Easily accessible from the N1 via Atterbury Road, and situated in the eastern wing of Menlyn Shopping Mall. They are open from 10:00-ish until late and have an extensive menu. Priced a bit to the higher end, you get lovely meals that are beautifully prepared. Their cocktail range is enough to make anyone smile. Take note that the smokingsection has the view, bit their non-smoking section offers inside seating in booths and elegantly set tables. This is a piece of contemporary Africa mixed with western cuisine. Love it. Go! Now!

Still is one of my favourite go-to restaurants in Pretoria. <br/>The plates are big & full of food. <br/>The atmosphere is great, especially out the back on the patio, overlooking the East of Pretoria.<br/><br/>They have really good crumbed mushrooms.<br/><br/>They have a Biltong Steak on the menu, which is incredible & comes with a mushroom sauce. I always ask them to change it to a garlic sauce & add some avo on the side. It makes for a mighty meal. Substitute your chips or veggies for a salad. <br/><br/>It's a must try if you want value for your money.
Sarina Frauenstein
I just love this place. The service is always wonderful, food is delicious, big portions at a reasonable price. Lovely atmosphere and they even bring out African blankets if it's cold. Lovely decor and their coffee is 👌🏼👌🏼

First time review for Baobab. This time around I only went for a quick cocktail and awesome sunset! Service was up to scratch today...had some issues in the past, but more pros than cons. <br/><br/>Dishes I will recommend : Mussel pot (rich in flavour...if you like garlic 😀), Fillet (med rare of course), oxtail potjie, bone marrow ribeye (finger licking good) and a few more.<br/><br/>Go and try them out. Good view and ambience!<br/><br/>12/01/2018<br/>Went with friends for supper. First the hostess took us to a wrong table. Had to get up 5 mins later to get moved to another table.<br/>Food was not as good as before (had a chicken, avo, pineapple salad - still searching for the avo).<br/>Won’t be going back soon...
Jessica
I would by no means calls this place great, but in the same breath it also wasn't terrible. Service needs serious attention. We experienced extremely long waiting periods for food and drink. The wrong steak was brought to my partner, it was also extremely over cooked. I had the prawn, haolumi and avo salad. For R110 I find it disgusting that you only get 3 small prawns- very stingy. Additionally the prawns had not been properly deveined, which is gross considering that you are then eating their poop.
Marie K
The food was good but the service was non-existent. The waiters were no where to be seen. The food and drinks took long to come. Requests made days prior were not adhered to. Unfriendly staff.
Nic Muller
Boabab is definitely one of my favorite Restaurants in Pretoria. The service is excellent, from reception to the waiter, and the food is always spot on. <br/><br/>On the chefs recommendation tonight I had the Dry Aged Ribeye Steak with a Biltong and Mushroom sauce, with Creamy Spinach on the side. Easily the best meal I've had this year in any Restaurant. <br/><br/>Well done Boabab, always a pleasure.<br/>Keep up the good work.
Marcia
What is not to like about this restaurant. We dine here about twice a month and they never disappoint!!!<br/>The staff is always friendly, helpful and will do pretty much everything to make sure their costumers are satisfied and well looked after.<br/><br/>I absolutely love ❤️ their chicken 🐥dishes (dikgogo), but everything on the menu is delicious (and very well portioned). The restuarant is a little bit more expensive than your average joe place but worth every cent. <br/><br/>A must try on the dessert menu is the creme brûlée!!!! They just know how!!! Yummy 😋
Slash
Lunch today was amazing!! Served by Sandra, she made us feel home and well looked after. We sat in the smoking upstairs, being non smokers we enjoyed the view. I had very nice burger and my girlfriend a stunning salad! I must say a go to place.... service can be scratched up a little faster, but the friendly waiters and atmosphere takes you to a chilled no worries zone!! Very cool place and we will be back soon!!

I went to the Wonderboom Baobab a long time ago so I pretty excited to come here. I decided to order their oxtail with mash and pumpkin. The pumpkin and mash were just absolutely amazing, I couldn't get enough of them. The oxtail on the other hand was just okay. Thr drink I ordered was a strawberry supernova and it was Amazing and it was in such a large glass. I was totally pleased. After my meal I ordered malva pudding with custard and cream. The cream was a bit sour but our waitress was very helpfull and she quickly got us a new side of cream.
Juan Du Plessis
Good view, small craft beer selection and smaller local beer selection. The Mexican food requires much more work, the wraps have no substance and taste like a large fried salad in cardboard. The quesadillas are dry and require a butter coating. Overall not a great experience, the service is a bit tired, but seem enthusiastic. Ps. Do not try the mixed berry and mint gin cocktail unless you really like bitter drinks.
Devin Sage
Really great view, great vibe, great music, great food and tired service with a bit of attitude to add insult to injury. I have no complaints about the food we ordered, it was delicious! The Kingklip was prepared perfectly, the stir fried vegetables were really good with a nice fresh flavour. The Grilled Calamari was slightly tough but by no means inedible. The vibe was really chilled with good background music that wasn't blaring. A real pity about the service but I would go back regardless and just hope for better service.

I love Baobab.<br/><br/>Every single time that I have been here I have always had an amazing meal. The waiters and front of house etc. are all very friendly and attentive.<br/><br/>I have had their snails, carpaccio, curries, potjies, calamari, steaks and a whole lot more. Every single meal was divine.<br/><br/>Most recently my partner and I went there for dinner and we ordered the peri peri chicken livers for starters and the neptune platter with a side of crispy roasted potatoes and onions as well as creamed spinach.<br/><br/>The livers were really good and all the fish and seafood were cooked to perfection and the seasoning was on point too. Not one complaint.<br/><br/>They have an extensive wine list and the waiters are excellent at recommending which wine to try. The decor and ambiance is romantic and warm.<br/><br/>I always look forward to coming to Boabab because I know that whatever I order, it will be amazing!
Frans Pretorius
Good food but the slowest service. <br/>Do not be in a hurry. <br/>The portions are expensive but at least big and you get what you pay for. The food was good and made up for the service.
Chioma Asomugha
A lovely restaurant with beautiful ambience and interior. <br/>The waiters were patient and ready to cater our every need from blankets (It got a little chilly) to endless glasses of water. <br/><br/>The food was quickly served and beautifully presented. <br/>It was delicious. <br/>I highly recommend this restaurant if you appreciate high class dining and fine cuisine. <br/>

Baibab in Menlyn is an old favorite. Have been going there for ages.... also before becoming vegetarian 😳😳<br/><br/>It is absolutely stunning to sit outside on a hot summer evening watching the city lights 😄😄<br/><br/>The menu is really interesting. Unfortunately not a lot for vegetarians...(nothing for vegans) not even on World Vegan day....<br/><br/>But the starters we had was simply amazing! And the nachos really nice. <br/><br/>Will go back to have it again..😄😄

This restaurant is definitely on my top list of favourite restaurants ! I had a lovely experience here with a few friends. <br/><br/>We were greeted by warm waiters at the door ,and were taken to a table that we were suitable with. Drinks were served. The only downfall about my experience was that our waiter wasn't so clued up on the menu, but we ordered nonetheless what we felt would we'd enjoy. Because it was a chilly evening I ordered a cup of red espresso which wasn't as great as I had anticipated ..💔 followed it up by a ridiculously priced sprite cooldrink to accompany my meal .<br/><br/>I ordered chicken, mozzarella and spinach wrapped in phyllo pastry which was to die for!😻 with a fresh Greek salad. I thoroughly enjoyed the ambience as it allowed for conversation to flow . <br/><br/>Decor blew me away! It truly has that modern trendy pan-African feel to it and so did the name of the meals on the menu. I'll definitely bring others along here when I do come again ! Definitely worth your bucks!👌

We had a lengthy Sunday breakfast / lunch at Baobab. I like the look of this eatery and the menu is definitely interesting. Best of all: they have CBC Crystal Weiss on tap, so I was very happy from the start. We had some Salmon Roses and Springbok Roses (unusual and tasty) for starters and I had the Thai Green Curry Chicken for mains and it was really good. So the quality of the food is good, the wine (and beer) selection is good and the service is good. The only negative could be that it is a tad expensive, but I did not leave feeling done in. Will definitely visit again

For a restaurant in a mall, this place is fancy and worth it. Excellent calamari main and the desert was delicious. The restaurant was surprisingly quiet at lunch, but that suited our large party.

Came back to baobab cause i wanted to try something that was their specialty instead of the ubiquitous two eggs and bacon i had the first time. Now baobab is pretty nice from the outside coming in. But oh my god. once you take that right turn to the top floor, and you see the how well the white snake skin leather matches the modern twist on traditional African decor. And the view. honestly in terms of ambiance i haven't seen anything like it. For the first time i actually bothered to remember the waiter's name. Simon. Friendly, Explained everything i asked of him wonderfully. Really made me feel like i was sitting in my own dinning room. one of the highlights of my experience.<br/><br/>Sadly, that is where the positives end. I ordered the oxtail. Now in the restaurant's defense, i ordered chips as a side and that was my mistake. should have had the rice instead. but they still weren't great. In fact they where of the same quality as the local sphatlo shops in mamelodi. I expected better. And as for the meat itself, it was beautifully cooked. fell right of the bone. But the flavour was just lacking a bit. (touch of garlic would do it nicely). Now i am seriously nit picking here but i didn't like the fact that there where small holes on the table cloth and my Tablespoon still had fingerprints on the handle.<br/><br/>All in all i somewhat enjoyed myself. I just know that this place can blow me away one day. I am gonna give it one more shot before i decide to write it off completely.

I have been here in the past and I wanted to return for a while to write a fresh review based on my experience. The waitress was very friendly, but didn't really understand some of the things when we asked about the food. E.g we ordered the Trinchado and Chicken Curry, after a while we were told the Chicken Curry is out, which was fine, but then first the specials were read to us after we ordered some food already. I ended up having the ribeye special with delicious fluffy mash! The steak was done to perfection. The trinchado sauce was great! The meat inside was quite tuff though! A nicer vibe in the evening I think though.

As annoying as Menlyn mall is, this is a restaurant I don't mind dragging myself through that mall for. Gorgeous decor and delicious food. I am yet to have a bad meal at Baobab they honestly take a little piece of me every time I go there. <br/>Their menu offers a wide variety of food - which immediately makes you think that they are confused and don't know where to focus but never that! <br/>The only down side is probably point out would be the fact that the whole staff will literally stop at your table to ask of everything is okay, literally every 5 minutes, always when you've just taken a bite of food 😂... Can we please enjoy our meals without the 5 min check up from everyone?! 😂<br/>You definitely need to give this one a try though, the walk through that unnecessarily huge mall is worth it. <br/>PS- try their oxtail poitjie

Baobab always has friendly service and great quality food. Food portions are big, and are great value for money. Outside seating is recommended, as you can see the beautiful Pretoria landscape while enjoying your meal. I have been coming here for the last 7 years, and I'm pleased to say that I have never once been disappointed.

Man oh man... The burger!!* :D I finished that plate in a minute and didn't regret a second!!* :) The onions rings were crispy and oozed flavor as well!!* :P Why the 3.5 rating you say? Well... I recently stopped smoking and I've always respected people around me even when I did have the habit. However the smoking section and the non smoking section are too close to each other and not very well ventilated. I don't have a problem with smokers but there needs to be a proper separation. For people who hate the smell of smoke I could see it being a hinderance. Waiter was a bit slow.... :/

Awesome restuarant! They have a wide variety to chose from and the food is awesome. Their servings are plenty and they not stingy! Their prices are also far. I recommend it anytime!

Most of the meals where average, however the ''chicken schnitzel'' was terrible. Service not great, defending the chef, etc. would not recommend

Of all the times I've been here, it has never disappointed. The menu is extremely wide, but that is not necessarily a bad thing, as I have had everything from the sushi to chicken and have been satisfied, always. If you're wanting to book a social table, always book right upstairs, even though it is smoking area, you don't even realize it, as it is very airy. Also, they have a great couch/lounge area up there as well, perfect to sink into with a cup of coffee after dinners, or another glass of wine. The view is amazing, as everything is glass and wood decor, so you can see all of the pretty Pretoria lights.

Our waitress was lovely... she took our drinks order right away but when it came to taking our order we waited for a LONG time. We then waited for over 45min for our food. While waiting at LAST a manager came to apologise for the delay. We eventually saw a waiter come out the kitchen with what looked like our food but he went up the stairs... eventually he came down with the food but we were not sure where he went. He then came with the espetada and what I thought was my meal but instead it was some type of salad. Over all the food lacked seasoning and the service was poor.

Great vibes and delicious food! <br/><br/>The feel and energy of this establishment is great! I love the decor and surroundings as it resembles a modern and classy take on an African theme. <br/><br/>Background music was very fun and suited a Saturday afternoon quite well. <br/><br/>Good was amazing. I had the balsamic beef salad and my friend had the sweet chili chicken dish. Was more than enough as the portion sizes are almost too big and man, see the mozzarella oozing from that chicken. <br/><br/>Located on the 6th floor at Menlyn Park, this is the best place to go take a break from shopping and grab a nice bite to eat. <br/><br/>The view is also to die for and the wine list leaves nothing to be desired.

My experience at Baobab was confused and not as great as one would expect. <br/><br/>The views are without a doubt great as the restaurant has a fantastic location. <br/><br/>The service was weak and rather cold. <br/><br/>My biggest problem with the restaurant is that its menu is just way too big. The concept is confused. Its listed as a cafe and grill but serves sushi? In my experience when you want to be everything to everyone you become a jack of all traits and as the saying goes - a master of none. <br/><br/>The location and decor already sets this restaurant apart from others and I believe they would be competitive even with a limited, focused menu. <br/><br/> <br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/>

Came here for a friend's 21st birthday dinner and I must say the food was amazing! Had the chicken livers for starters, Serloin steak with creamed spinach for main and Malva pudding and custard for dessert!! The mango smoothie was nice and thick and very refreshing. Meals are very filling...Great service from the waiters and overall a great night in the VIP section which is great for private parties or meetings! An awesome place and highly recommended 😀

Really loved it here. It was my first time eating here. I had the Nachos and my friend had the Pulled Pork Wrap. Firstly I just wanna say that the portion size was amazing. The Nachos tasted amazing. I loved the creaminess in it, it was cheesy and very filling. <br/><br/>The pulled pork was also amazing despite the fact that it was really messy 😂 it was an awesome dish. The wine we had was also amazing (Leopard leap merlot)

Wow❗️ I have no complaints about this place whatsoever. My friend made late reservations for his birthday dinner and managed to get a table for the evening. We arrived a little later than our actual arrival time🙈. We received warm welcome from the manager and staff. Great atmosphere to dine🍹🍛.Our waiter for the evening was so hands on and friendly, he made sure we had everything we needed😀. The food was delicious 👌 and on par with enough portions (to feed two people a plate). I had Biltong Rump with Mushroom souse served with any choice of starch/Veggies and I decided to go for fries. We all enjoyed our meals and would recommend it to anyone. 😀💛 I will definitely be going back to try out the rest of the menu.
Lenique Luüs
Don't get me wrong, the food was magnificent, but there was to many other factors. Firstly, the "hostess" if you can call her that, did not seem to want to help us. Finally, got a dirty table. The waitress, to our order just to later come back and tell us my dad has to change his order, as they did not have his product. All the food did not come at the same time. Dad was almost done eating, by the time my food arrived. Lastly, our waitress did not know how to use the pay point. We have been supporting Baobab for years but it has degraded a whole lot. It was good while it lasted.

Trying something different is always high on my priority list and that is what you get. The decor is a nice blend of modern and comfort. The view is spectacular. There is some old favorite dishes on the menu as well as interesting ones. Worth a try and a great spot for cocktails on a hot day or before a night out!

It took a while to get seated as it was a busy night, but it was worth the wait. We sat outside and took in the beautiful view of Pretoria. The food was good, it is reasonably priced and the portions are generous. The service was excellent and the vibe was great. Would definitely go back.
Jackie Zhang
Service was okay <br/>The price may seem steep at first, but the plate is quite huge<br/>Sometimes the food is good sometimes not, its really a hit or miss. But I do recommend the steak<br/>Very nice view, over the whole of menlyn<br/>Great for dates!

One of the best meals I've had in a while!<br/>This is the first time I have visited Baobab in the 3 years while studying in Pretoria and I have definitely been missing out..<br/><br/>The most tranquil setting, looking over pretoria with a menu that leaves you wanting to try one of everything.<br/><br/>I had a sirloin steak with camembert cheese and cranberry sauce with calamari, as a combo! It was incredible!!<br/><br/>My friends had sushi and raved the entire evening about how tasty it was.<br/><br/>Quick service and you definitely pay for what you're receiving. I will be back soon!!<br/>Jenny Da Costa

Beautifully designed interior and stunning views from the deck. We ordered crumbed mushrooms and a cheesy garlic roll as a starter. The crumbed mushrooms were absolutely divine and I loved the clearly homemade tartar sauce. The cheesy garlic roll was lacking in garlic. For mains my mom in law had a cheese and bacon burger which she loved. The chips served with the burger were really good. I had the strawberry and avo salad and hubby the balsamic beef salad. Very generous portions and such a pleasure to eat a salad that is easy on the lettuce and generous with everything else. Our waiter, Simba, was attentive and efficient. We look forward to going there again :)

Always a winner from business lunches to family dinners! <br/>Awesome view, very well spoken staff offering good service and really good food! <br/>
Sarah
Lovely steak house, with an authentic feel. It is slightly pricier than the usual restaurant, but really worth the experience of lovely friendly staff and beautiful surroundings. Mist fans keep you cool outside on hot evenings, and DEFINITELY sit outside on the deck - lovely atmosphere. <br/><br/>Be careful of the Camembert starter.. it's literally an entire round of cheese and simply overwhelming. Following that, I tried the steak with feta, peppadew and white wine sauce with grilled vegetables - what a combo.. :)<br/><br/>TOP TIP: Ask for the 'Purple Rain' cocktail - looks like meths, tastes like magic. This isn't on the menu.. just adds to the elitist quality of this amazing drink. <br/><br/>DOWNERS: Disappointing that they don't take bookings.. and their dessert menu is average.
Chris Sawyer
Demand a table on the deck - the view is amazing! <br/><br/>Generally good staff and service here. <br/><br/>Baobab is no more pricy than your average steak house (I.e. Spur), but the quality is far better. <br/><br/>The spicy Trinchado starter is pure comfort.. That followed by a steak smothered in feta, peppadew and white wine sauce is just a amazing combination. <br/><br/>If you're stopping in here for dinner, make sure you order the purple rain cocktail (it's not on the menu). The White Russian also deserves praise.<br/><br/>Baobab loses 0.5 points for two reasons:<br/><br/>1. Their dessert menu is beyond bland- absolutely nothing sticks out. Also, the creme brûlée was more like scrambled egg than a set custard; and <br/><br/>2. They have an archaic practise of refusing to take reservations.. They're quite rude on the phone when you request this as well. <br/><br/>A generally good experience let down by small things.

My boyfriend and I went here for a chilled birthday dinner. We had no reservations but they had enough place for us. As a smoking couple, it is sometimes hard to be walk-in's and get service right away. Their service was good and the waiters well informed about the food aswell as the sushi. We had a delicious wine and sushi (Dragon rolls and Calaforia rolls) for starters. This was very filling, so we ended up sharing a quiche with salad and finished our meal wih a crème brulée. All in all this was an affordable meal with a pleasent atmosphere. Would recommend it to anyone.
PJ
Not sure if I like Baobab or not. It hits all the marks on food and wine. The ambience is always very chilled, service is always there. But that's just it, everything seems to be there. The food seems fresh but lacks real freshness and finesse.
Dt
Really great food, and the service was good!<br/><br/>Tends to be a bit expensive! Meal for 2 (only mains) few drinks, no deserts, ended the night with a coffee - and the bill was R500.<br/><br/>

Very nice restaurant in Menlyn centre. Food is good with a decent selection, although a little pricey. Interesting decor and good service. I would say lunch and dinners here would be ideal.

Had Einstein tonight. What a treat. Service on the slow side but it was busy. Absolutely one off the best restaurants in Pretoria with a amazing view. #willbeback.
René Bennett
Had our year end lunch here. We were quite a big table but the food quality and the service was very good. Considering that the restaurant was very busy we did not wait very long for our food to arrive.
Eduan Beetge
Man I love this spot. Great view up on the terrace and really high quality food. Service is good and perfect for a quick pop in while shopping or for a date night..
Esther Shaidi
Great food and ambiance. Had an end year function, understandably service was slower but the waiters were patient and attentive. I had a lovely chicken liver starter which had an AMAZING sauce only downfall was the bread that came with it. It didn't look appetizing. Perhaps toasting the bread or substituting it with dumplings could be great. My steak main was grilled to perfection whilst the cheesecake dessert sealed the deal, all served in deliciously generous portions
Leandie Swanepoel
Went to Baobab for my birthday, and I must admit I don't know what the fuzz is all about, the restaurant is really beautiful, and the view outside as well. Our waiter was really friendly and service was great. We had a cherry reduction sirloin steak with camembert on top, with creamed spinage and butternut, a 500g T-bone steak with pap and sause. I think It's maybe the meals we decided on, but for the meals we received and the price we paid, it was not worth it.
Dog Food Man
Wow wow wow. I loved the decor. The paid attention to detail to all the little things. The food was delicious and served in a pleasing way. Little potjie pots for stewed meals. Now I really want to get some of those for home. Service wasn't too bad either. The portions of food were generous and everything was seasoned except for the sirloin my fiance had. The lemon butter sauce that came with the dozen prawns was a little too lemony. However, for the 1st time in a long time, all member of my family finished their entire meal despite the large portions. Delicious! Keep up the good work and 1 critique, please keep your bathrooms clean. It's the only reason why I didn't score you 4,5.

Baobab has had me coming back since the first time i had dinner there in 2008. The food has stayed delicious and the ambience has always stayed laid back but exciting at the same time. The menu offers a wide variety of choices to soothe any craving whether it be delicious steaks, fish, chicken, yummy salads and even sushi! The cocktails are really amazing and its worth going just for great sundowners overlooking the menlyn area. We've also never had a problem with service. Goodness that keeps on giving!

We had a late lunch at Boabab on a Saturday afternoon. We were served by a friendly waitress, she was efficient and there when we needed her. We ordered some drinks and a kiddies meal for baby while deciding what to eat from their extensive menu. Eventually I decided on a blue cheese fillet with veggies and my husband opted for the ribs and chips. The kiddies meal arrived quite quickly. What a delicious meal! Chicken Snitchel and chips with a cheese sauce. It was a huge portion and very tasty. The chicken was not thickly covered in crumbs an drenched in oil and was cooked perfectly. It was melt - in -your mouth goodness. The cheese sauce was very tasty and the chips portion quite large. Good value for the price. We ended up eating this as a starter alongside baby, as the portion was so large. My blue cheese fillet was medium on the inside and medium to well done on the outer layer but still quite flavourful. The stir fry veggies were crunchy but good. I expected a bit more blue cheese sauce, maybe even some on the side. There was a light drizzle of sauce over the top of the meat and a bit overflowed into the plate. It was good but not nearly enough to have a bit of sauce to cover the drier outer parts of the fillet. My husband's ribs did not dissapoint and he enjoyed the activity meal.<br/>Overall we had good service and a good meal.

This restaurant really deserves a fantastic review. The setting is just so beautiful even though it's situated in the busiest Mall in Pretoria. Once you find a table you actually forget about the hustle and bustle of the mall and you can just experience a taste of Africa.<br/><br/>Excellent and well prepared meals, very good winelist, some of the best trained servers in the Capital City. Management that obviously care about their patrons and that wants you to return again and again. If you haven't been there, make sure that you get there soon - you will not be dissapointed.

We love this place! Date night favourite! <br/>They have excellent sushi, amazing cocktails. I simply haven't been disappointed! <br/>A must try is the watermelon mojito!!!!<br/>

This restaurant has a nice ambiance, food is good and interesting.  Service was okay.  My expectation was very high, as many people recommended this restaurant, but in fact it was very ordinary.  Worth a try, for sure.

This is one of my faveroute restaurants and the food is usually amazing and their cocktails are even better but the service is not very good here
_Malenda
Everything about this place is a winner. <br/><br/>The food is absolutely amazing, the service is 5 star and the waiters are really kind, the view is to die for, and the environment is really comfy. <br/><br/>If you're planning on keeping the mrs happy, then she'll love this
Steph
Baobab really is a gorgeous restaurant and the outside seating on the deck is lovely on a warm evening. The cocktails are great. Halloumi starter was very nice - hot and crispy with a tasty dipping sauce. I had the avo, biltong and cashew salad for mains. Although it was a wonderful combination of flavours, I wonder if its really worth R100 for a pile of lettuce with a few thin slices of avo and a couple of pirces of biltong? Boabab delivers nice food but unfortunately it is just that. Nice, nothing special. Service was friendly but on the slower side.
Talita Jacobs
Baobab is one of those places where you'll make the effort in going into a shopping centre. The look is so inviting and beautiful and the food, breakfast amazing, sushi REALLY amazing everything I've tried here has been SO good. Oh and lets not forget the WINE AND COCKTAILS 🍷🍹😍 try it

I've been to Baobab numerous times in the years I've lived in Pretoria. The ambience & decor present such a contrasting yet alluring combination with the downstairs area a dark, broody African boma-like space and the upstairs a light, cream based and more open area. Particularly splendid is the outside deck with open views of the east of the city. One can choose to sit either at the bar on the deck or a table where you're likely to get the better views. It's even lovelier in summer when they have the cooling mist on. <br/><br/>Baobab food is so-so. I mean I can't say that a particular dish has been very memorable. Their African niche however is probably where their winning streak lies. It's just that their dishes often border on 'generic' African cuisine. Maybe really paying attention to their dishes to give them a truly African taste will do the trick. Creamed spinach isn't really 'African'. There are a variety of ways that spinach is cooked in different African cuisines. Also, that combination of pumpkin & spinach has become rather unappealing & bland, being done even by chains such as Spur! On this occasion, I tried one of their gourmet salads, specifically the Tanganyika. Much to my surprise, I completely enjoyed it. They were generous with their pineapple & I loved discovering more than enough nuts hidden in the mix. Also their leaf selection was great. I can't tell you how many times I've been served iceberg lettuce on a main salad at upscale establishments. Such a complete no, no. I was there for a birthday dinner party & none of the diners on our table complained either about food or service. In fact, one of the party had a prawn dish & couldn't stop raving about how delicious & well prepared the prawns were. To me, that's noteworthy because many seafood places can never get prawns just right! My partner had the rib & wings combo. I tasted some and although the basting sauce was yummy, it was a little on the slightly cold side. I believe hot dishes must be served that way to get the best out of certain flavors used in preparing them. For instance, I don't like cold chicken pieces in my chicken salad. It just absolutely lessens the enjoyment factor for me. <br/><br/>Service at Baobab has never failed to impress. Genuinely friendly and impressively efficient. They should keep that standard up!
Jacques Du Plessis
Great atmosphere, cocktails and deserts.  The last time I dined at Boabab Menlyn, I was a bit disappointed in the service.  I ordered a chicken schnitzel and my friends ordered steak.  My food wasn't exceptional and non of my friends mentioned that theirs was sublime.  From a restaurant of this call I expected more and would rather recommend the branch in Wonderboom, if you are willing to drive a few km's.

Have been here several times! Nice vibe, amazing food and drinks! The staff and the service is always spot on! Never disappoints!! Will have to visit again!

The african theme is well designed. The service was good. The food is nice and especially the streak with the brie sauce. The prices leans a little to the steep side. A great and unique place.
Simone Steyn
From the decor to the food...I just love it all! Their Chicken, biltong and feta Quesadillas is to die for and you just have to end your meal with their delicious Kahlua Dom Pedros! Definitely one of my favorite restaurants.
Olloff Denuyschen
Their salads are very nice but their eisbein's are to die for. Best eisbein in Pretoria with not a bad price considering it is a 600g one...
Michelle
The decor is something out of a book , not like other places they have their own vibes ! Service does vary from bad to good. The menu will be able to cater for all the tastebuds and cravings. The Tanganyika salad is great! Fresh leaves, fresh pineapple and walnuts with avocados and tomatoes and a extra chicken nestled on the salad ! This is such a great salad!!! All the salads i have tried and every last one of them are good . Usually salads are dull but they give every item on the menu a special touch . The cous-cous and chicken ,the balsamic beef, the cajun chicken and the avo and biltong is just as good ! They have many options even for the vegetarians ! If you have a big appetite the veg curry potjie is for you ! Freshly made with rice and a crisp included its so big that 2 can eat from it . Even the chicken schnitzel is a huge portion. When it comes to meat i recommend the chateaubriand when it comes to something meaty .

About 4 years ago I used to visit Baobab rather often, eat their food and be amazed and their portion sizes at a very good price. Before then, I never walked in because I always thought it was another Kream or Signature, so only for special occasions. However, my partner loved this place and we went there often. Tasty food, excellent service, helpful manager (who docked a "faulty" menu choice off the bill on more than one occasion) and big big portions. <br/>However, about over a year ago we decided to stop going to Baobab, the portions were getting smaller and the prices were getting higher. Yes I can understand that prices need to go up a bit and if not portions need to get smaller, but if the food is good it's good, no? The food was still decent, but what put us off was the service. The last straw was a waiter that was so bad that we didn't even tip, and for us that quite a big deal, seeing as that is somebodies livelihood. <br/>Apologies for the rant, but here comes the redeeming factor. Two nights back I went for a catchup dinner with an old school friend and it was good. We sat upstairs in smoking, which is the nicest area to sit, not too smoky, very intimate, even in the day. Such a cosy place I even went as far as to order a pink drink, a strawberry supernova which was delicious and not that alcoholic at all. The food was good and the service was not bad. I might be tempted to go back if I ever find myself in Menlyn again.

The food is absolutely amazing. Your taste buds will forever be in debt. The view of Pretoria while having a stunning meal with a complementary wine is the perfect way to spend your weekend with your partner or even family. Fine dining

Haven't being here yet but would love to visit soon...your food looks yummy and I bet it tastes nice also, I'm coming soon with my crew for my birthday dinner outting.<br/>

Great view of pretoria while sitting outside enjoying the fresh air, they'll give you a blanket if you're cold, the food is tasty and served hot and they mix a mean cocktail.

Had my friend's birthday dinner in June and we were given the private dining room. Food was good, waiters were very friendly and helpful. Great atmosphere.

Spent the afternoon here forbmy fathers birthday recently...such a lovely restaurant with some of the most accommodating staff ive ever experienced...great service...fantatstic set up and atmosphere and FANTASTIC food...always delicious...will definately be back!

Always a pleasure to dine at Baobab. This time we headed there with no reservation which ended in a wait of about 20 min, however not as long as we expected to wait. Waiter was great, drinks took some time, but food was on time. Food envy is always a thing when dining with a group at Baobab, however I was left with no one interested in my main course. Ribs and wings was disappointing, served as a dull plate with not very appetising looking food and a few lost chips on the dish. This would however just make me avoid their combo dishes as we have always had very tasty food there.
Quintin
This is a restaurant that should be on every one's bucket list of places to eat at. I have been a few times and I have never been disappointed ever. Well done on the great food
Claire Browne
We have been here twice.first time amazing service and amazing food.a group of friends had a 3 course meal with interesting combinations and we got something different to try. We sat inside with a great vibe and something special.<br/><br/>This time round we decided to sit upstairs to get the fantastic view of the venue.its a shame that the food this time was bland and drenched in cheese . service non existent with us having to find a waiter each time to place an order. This put quite a damper on our first experience and will have to consider coming again, perhaps its just not a good idea sitting upstairs.

Baobab Cafe & Grill in Menlyn sets itself apart from the other restaurants on offer in the mall by its view and unique African-themed decor. I was seated by my friendly waiter Roy and he was attentive throughout lunch. <br/><br/>DECOR & AMBIANCE: Baobab really is a photographer's heaven because there are so many levels and facets to it. My photo's will speak for themselves.<br/><br/>FOOD: It was a particularly cold day, so I selected one of their Potjie pots: Beef Trinchado with mash as a starch. Presentation of the meal was truly African and the portions were generous..<br/><br/>All in all, I can say that everything from my waiter Roy to my tasty meal was excellent and I will be back!
Hlayisani Sambo
A comprehensive menu and a warm atmosphere. It's certainly Pretoria's pride. Serves a variety of African dishes and the potions are too handsome. Their mixed grill and beef burger are my highlights. Their curry and chicken dishes are also great. You can't go wrong with the fish either and the staff know what they are doing. Just don't sit outside in the summer as the bees will share your drinks with you.
Jenna Candice Fulcher
It's great food at an affordable price! The service was good but the kitchen is a little slow. The deco is lovely and it has some lekker local flavour. It's definitely with a try! <br/>
Deon Krause
Food is great but the kitchen is very slow, service has gone down in the last 3 years. We went from being regulars to occasional diners at Baobab because of the service.

We usually go as a big group of Friends to Boabab in Menlyn.<br/><br/>the food is very nice and they usually have very interesting dishes available.<br/><br/>The vibe is very nice and the decor is beautiful, one of my favourite dishes to have there is the Prawn curry, it is a nice big portion and it is not to hot.<br/><br/>The servise is good and When you sit outside in the winter or on a cold evening they give you the option of having a blanket for your legs.<br/><br/>Hope to go there again soon.
Vanessa Bosch
I have been there twice and have not once been disappointed. This place and the food is absolutely to die for! I had a chicken breast wrapped with phyllo pastry filled with spinach and feta. The chicken was cooked to perfection and the sides were amazing! The food is a bit pricy, but absolutely worth it. Would definitely recommend it if you want to enjoy a meal you won't forget.
Moshibudi Mphahlele
Not the most welcoming greeting on arrival. We waited for a while before someone took our drinks order. Also the food took a while. Portions are rather generous and prices are reasonable. Not to sure about the music selection, does not fit the ambience of the restaurant. Lovely views.
The Food Musketeer
Ok for all those that rated this place so highly must be smoking something. I decided on having breakfast here as i needed to pass time in pta and looked for a place that opened early before shopping.<br/><br/>I saw all the comments about this place and thought hmm lets give it a try instead of the usual wimpy or spur breakfast.<br/><br/>Firstly according to this page it says they open from 8am to 10pm.. i got there at 845am.. and they were not open. The waiter showed us a 9 on his fingers so we thought cool lets see which other places are open and come back. Got back about 9:10 and they will still not open so i asked another waiter throgh the door what time are you opening? He says in another 5 or so minutes. . I was just about to walk off when he said you can cone in for coffee so long. I shouldve known thats when i shouldve walked away. So we enter. Lovely interior and decor definitely inviting and huge space to cater for large groups of people and a nice outside deck.<br/><br/>We were given the breakfast menu which is limited but enough variety i guess for some. I opted for the benedict and my mom took the african sunrise and the waiter asked how she'd like her eggs and specified over easy.<br/>In the meantime we got our coffees. One cappuccino and one latte where the milk was right to the top of the mug with no space to add coffee.<br/>We waited quite a while for our meals but we were not in a hurry and figured we the first ones there.<br/>To my horror i get my food. One slice of toast (which is so hard i cant cut with the semi steak knife they give) with 2 poached eggs and some greenery (rocket) and 3 cherry tomatoes sliced... raw.. which was supposed to be grilled. Cant find my parma ham so i remove the eggs to find 3 minute shavings of parma ham. And they expect to charge me R68 for that??? Naturally i complained as its a rip off... so the waiter then brought me additional parma ham on a side plate.<br/>My moms food looked way more than expected. The potatoes baked beans bacon and boerwors wasnt bad... her eggs however were still raw....<br/><br/>I felt sorry for the waiter as he tried and i still gave him a decent tip regardless of the chef who clearly cant cook. But i definitely wont be back here and i wont recommend the food regardless of the decent decor.<br/>

I would place Baobab alongside the best restaurants in Pretoria to celebrate a special occasion (anniversary or birthday dinner). They have a lot to offer on their menu (steaks to sushi) -and you absolutely cannot go wrong with anything that you decide on. Also very good wine/drinks selection, and great service. Stunning setting as well.
Kamohelo Morgan
One of the most enjoyable dining experiences I've had. beautiful decor, very relaxed and open environment. Been there a couple of times and never had a problem with service. <br/><br/>Great variety on the menu. Just do go there too hungry and not knowing what you want the entire menu sounds amazing. <br/><br/>My personal favourite "Camembert & Cherry Burger or Steak". <br/><br/>Great for dinner for 2 or more can have your own secluded space for a dinner party. Amazing breakfast, lunch and especially dinner. Value for money. Love It!
Andriette Keyser
I love the brilliant decor and atmosphere. The food is excellent and we always get great service. My favourite dish is the lamb shank. Thanks!<br/>

If you enjoy good food & service, this is the place! Beef curry was superb, seared tuna best value for money and our waitress was well trained and most pleasant! If I didn't resolve to try a new restaurant every time we go out for a meal, I'd go back to Baobab every time and twice on a Sunday!
Jean-Mari Blaauw
My mom and I had a business meeting at Baobab about a week ago, and WOW!! The waiter was just unbelievable and the NACHOS!! Oh my... Best Nachos ever! Can't go wrong!

Great service, hearty flavourful food and what a view- especially in the outside upstairs area. Have been at Baobab a few times before and will definitely go again. If big main portions are not your thing then opt for multiple starters to get a great variety of flavours.

We have been to Baobab numerous times before, whether for a date night or a night out with friends we have never walked away feeling anything but satisfied. The variety of dishes is great, and the portion size is generous. Their sweet chilli chicken is one of our favourite dishes. The location of the restaurant with the lovely deck outside with a view of the city gives it a relaxed atmosphere. I would definitely recommend this restaurant!

Service was bad but the food looked good and tasted good, very big portions I guess that's where the price comes from. Cocktail price not bad but they don't have a variety of cocktails <br/>

Great view but in my experience the service has never been good. The food quality is good but the price is high so makes up for it. This restaurant is huge! Definitely one of the biggest in Pretoria.

Always a winner, excellent smoking section with a great view of Pretoria.. Been here a few times for all types of occasions, never ceases to amaze!

The restaurant has lovely vibe and has stunning views towards the north of Pretoria. The food is of a good quality and the portion sizes are HUGE, so ultimately the price of the food is good value for money. That's the positive side of our experience in summary. The negatives however... the service was diabolical and extremely SLOW!. So I would not recommend it for a "quick bite".We did have a large table of 15 people, however it is totally unacceptable for some people to still be waiting for their starters while others are tucking into their mains. The waiter was also extremely adept at getting people to "order up" - which I suppose the restaurant encourages, however encouraging a single person to order a potjie as a starter (it was enough to feed 5) is just pure madness and completely unnecessary. I walked away feeling like the waiter had taken advantage of a situation where none of us was familiar with the menu, sizing or prices on the menu. When the waiter knows that his tip is automatic (for large tables it is automatically added), I was horrified at the lack of attention and service that was given. The waiters name was Vaughan.

The decor is beautiful and it has a lovely open air feel outside, and a more sophisticated intimate look inside. I had a delicious lamb shank that was very filling, the cocktails are good too...

On entering Baobab, it feels like entering a cool, vast cavern, shadowy with pools of golden light over cosy seating. As you go deeper into the place, it gets lighter and opens to the outside area with amazing views over the green hills of Eastern Pretoria.<br/>Sunday my husband and I went there for a late lunch. We sat on the deck, enjoying the beautiful day. I had a dry Martini, which left me in a mellow mood!<br/>For starters I had the Smoked Salmon Roll with cream cheese and cherry tomatoes - for me, the dish of the day, full of flavour, salmon fresh and delicately smoked. Izak had Avo Ritz (a personal favourite). It was a huge portion (two big avo halves, overflowing with big shrimp) and delicious!<br/>My main dish was Prawn, Haloumi and Avo salad, crisp and fresh. Izak was less fortunate. He ordered 400g Rib-eye steak with oven baked Marrow Bone on top. Instead, they brought a plate of chips and grilled vegetables. After a small while, a Trinchado appeared - the wrong dish! The manager appologised, eventually the Rib-eye was brought. It was well cooked, but had a lot of sinew - perhaps a portion cut off the end of the roast? Instead of Bone Marrow on the steak, the marrow bones arrived later, after inquiries, clumped together on a side plate.<br/>The deserts were soft serve ice cream in pretty glass bowls.<br/>Baobab delivers as an upmarket Cafe and Grill. And the outside deck is amazing!

The reviews were extremely favourable in reality, which is the reason this spot enticed us on a weekday. we landed at 6:00pm . We were invited by smiling staff and picked prime seats in the well presented restaurant. <br/><br/>Services started in a whirlwind and more foodies went along with us. We had a pleasant choice of dishes and the prices were cheap, I felt like we were ransacking them! All the food was fabulous, flavorsome and the bits were flawless, no wastage which is a huge issue when eating out and particularly at the buffet, you generally put in more than you require. The desert was basic, sweet and simply a flawless approach to end the feast. <br/><br/>I was more than impressed on various levels. An unassuming gem in the heart of City, recommended with two thumbs up.

Not as great as in the past. Sorry but we expected more from a favorite Breakfast.

We went to Baobab on Sunday with the whole family for Mothers day as it is a favorite of ours. <br/>The food was great as well as the service. (i recommend the waiter Roy) his service was quick, thorough and efficient. <br/>We had a whole variety of different food among the family from salads, meats, fish and sushi(african and normal) and everyone really enjoyed it. It was brilliant! <br/>I recommend baobab to anyone! Beautiful restaurant, great food and great service.

Beautiful setting fit for a lovely celebration and lovely food

Baobab menlyn achieved something special because restaurants in malls feel very impersonal where as this place is classy. Every time I come where the food is great. Cocktails are always freshly made and creative flavours are abundant. Gotta try it out

Probably the best place to go to in Menlyn. Ideal to have dinner at before a movie.vThe restaurant's decor is BEAUTIFUL and the atmosphere warm. They're one of the few restaurant's in the mall with a smoking section - and a proper one too. Their menu consists out of an appreciated variety of food. From grills to sandwiches to sushi. The portions are well worth the price and the quality of thei food is highly recommendable... Well, about everything of this restaurant is highly recommendable.

First off, let me just say that I am not a fan of restaurants in malls. However, if you are in Menlyn, I would highly recommend visiting this restaurant. <br/><br/>The decor is African inspired and is absolutely exquisite! I love that the different sections of the very large restaurant have completely different atmospheres. For a summer time lunch you can sit out on the terrace where it's fresh and cool. Inside is a more romantic dinner setting and upstairs boasts some lovely areas for private functions. There is also a bar area which is great for just a casual drink and some snacks. They really do cater for every occasion and I was very impressed by that! <br/><br/>The food was very good but I feel like their presentation let them down a little. The restaurant is gorgeous so paying a little more for your meal is totally acceptable but the glamorous ambiance ends when your meal arrives and it is plated in a very ordinary way. <br/><br/>Service was good and overall I really enjoyed myself.

My absolute favorite restaurant of all time! It's actually a family favorite and we've never been disappointed. The menu couldn't be more complete, offering everything from light meals, wraps and burgers to specialty dishes of fish, meat, chicken and game. With the main courses, several choices of sides are offered including mash, wedges, pan-fried potatoes and rice. Although the dishes are expensive, the portions are well worth the price and this price range is to be expected from such a highly-rated and renowned restaurant. The service is good and the waiters are friendly. The interior of Baobab definitely adds to the experience, with baobab trees (can't tell if they're real or fake) placed inside, low lighting and beautiful decorations. <br/><br/>Some (highly recommended!!) personal favorites:<br/>Light meal of Hake Tempura (R65)<br/>Balsamic Cherry salad - beef strips, balsamic glaze, cherry tomatoes, spinach, rocket, sun-dried tomatoes.. divine! (R65)<br/>Wraps - can be ordered hot or cold and comes with chips<br/>Ribs - priced fairly and very tasty, great basting sauce<br/>Peppadew and feta stuffed chicken fillet - really a unique combination and SO tasty! It's quite a big portion so be expecting to take some home for lunch the next day!<br/>Chicken/beef schnitzels - comes with veggies and a side of your choice. The portions are large and you can also additionally buy sauces of cheese, mushroom, etc. <br/><br/>The pan-friend potato side is something different to just regular chips and is something of a treat, I highly recommend it. <br/><br/>If you're looking for a fancy night out on town or celebrating something, Baobab's is the ultimate place for the older crowd. Unfortunately they don't have a kid's menu but the menu has a nice selection of burgers, wraps and sandwiches.

The last time I went here was in Decemeber 2013, before my friends and I parted for our summer leave. The food I have had here has always been great. My meat is always cooked the way I like it. Service is generally good. I think my Dad might not appreciate the lighting, but I am young enough and can read the menu clearly. The one thing I can say is that with regards to the lamb curry potjie, the meat is far too fatty for my liking. <br/><br/>I think if you want a proper meaty dish, you can't go wrong by going to Baobab. Oh, the seafood is also pretty good as well. My favourite restaurant to dine at in Menlyn Park.

Been here on two occasions, both dates. The decor is contemporary African, the ambience on the opulent side without being off-putting. Baobab sells itself as a family restaurant and on appearances alone, you'd be hard pressed to believe them. Trust me, it really is child-friendly. The waiters are attentive and eager without being overbearing. The menu is a carnivore's delight. On both occasions, my partner and I had steaks with the accompanying sauces. Delicious. Cooked to order. (Okay, once they got my order wrong but it was briskly whisked away without complaint and I was offered a complimentary cappuccino for my pain and suffering.) Perfect venue for a date or a family dinner.
