Review Tin Roof Cafe - Pretoria

Amanda Ngcobo
We really enjoyed our evening here. The manager checked on us frequently and the wait staff was on the ball, so we felt like VIPs. The food was exceptional, seasoned to perfection and flavourful with luxurious plating. The kitchen staff outdid themselves. We will definitely be returning! The route going to the cafe is very scenic and peaceful too. I only wish the chairs weren’t plastic, I think it’s the final touch to transform the restaurants feel to a more fine dining experience.

Ugh, think old Italian aesthetics and a relaxed atmosphere. The service was amazing, food good and a great spot for date night. Location: It’s situated on a plot, there is a bit of gravel road before you get there. Will definitely be going back soon

It was pouring down with rain last night, so we stepped into Tin Roof Café …. The fireplace was crackling, there’s a beautiful cat sleeping in a basket at the door, and it’s all nice and toasty inside . We were greeted with a friendly smile at the door , and welcomed at our table… The menu has everything from pizzas to pasta and much more, the wine list boasts a lovely eclectic verity of wines. I order the salt & pepper calamari which I will definitely recommend. There’s ample parking, but note they’re closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. They’re open for limited hours on the other days, so best check their opening hours and book before you go, to avoid disappointment. Children under 12 aren’t allowed , but it’s a green venue for weddings or parties . I hope I get a chance to go again soon.

Amazing fast service and delicious food. It was our first visit to Tin Roof Cafe last night. We had the beetroot and salmon as well as the springbok duo for a starter. For mains we had the beef fillet primavera and tagliatelle scampi. For dessert we shared a chocolate fudge cake with ice cream. Every meal was plated beautifully and the flavours for each meal was devine. Definitely a new favorite for us!!!

What a dream!!! We literally cannot find one fault with this restaurant. From the get go the service was great. We had the best waiter that have served me in my life. It was very difficult to choose what to eat as the restaurant offers a great variety, all of which sounds spectacular. Each dish has their own unique twist which contributes to the unique nature of the restaurant. They offer anything from gnocchi (a favourite) to pork belly, to fillet, to pizza, to the most amazing home made tin roof ice cream (no not the one from Woolworths). The food was fantastic. The flavors burst in my mouth and I could just feel them all float together to create one impeccable taste. The chef even personally came to check up on us. Overall I can officially rate this restaurant as the best I've ever been.

We had the chef's table experience, and Chef Pellie outdid himself with the food! The wine pairing was daring and exquisite. I would definitely recommend this unique opportunity to have a gourmet meal in a romantic setting.

The restaurant is one of the best I have been to in many years. Not only is the food, menu and wine of excellent quality and taste, it doesn't break the bank. Definitely recommend trying it atleast once. Just make sure to phone ahead to avoid dissapointment.

Was the best experience in a long time. The atmosphere, presentation of food and preparation was exactly and more than I expected. All of my 14 guests had a great time. Thank you to the best chef in town,Pellie and his team for making this a special one for my wife’s birthday. We will always keep this in our memories.

Beautiful venue situated on a farm near silver lakes. Great food and service. Booking is essential on a Sunday for lunch but the owner is very nice and accommodating and will try and squeeze you in 😉. You can see the chef has a passion for food!

What a lovely culinary experience! The atmosphere of this restaurant on a Sunday afternoon is the perfect way to end off, or start, the week.

We ordered from the specials menu and started our lunch off with the Fig and Goat's Cheese Tart. Certainly a new favourite that tantalises the taste buds.

Next we had the Rigatoni Carbonara and New Kid Pizza. Very filling and we wondered whether we would want to dessert, but who can say no to Chocolate Fudge Pudding, complete with peanut butter ice cream?

A lovely and inviting atmosphere where you can escape the buzz of the city. A must!

This delightful spot is in Mooiplaats, Pretoria, so it does feel like a bit of an escape from city life. Complete with a bit of dirt road to travel on. Us city dwellers need that now and again!

The warm and welcoming ambience immediately transported us back to our time spent in the Cape Winelands a week or so ago. Bliss!

We arrived just as the doors opened, and I realized soon afterwards that we were probably very lucky to get a table without a reservation, so that is something to remember next time.

The wine list is concise but really impressive and we immediately recognized some personal favourites.

You can expect country-style comfort food that is absolutely delicious and prepared and presented beautifully.

I opted for the wild mushroom risotto and believe me, it was divine! Served with asparagus and chickpea fritters, this was such a tasty and hearty dish. It was a good-sized portion (in my words = large) and I finished all of it! Every last bite.

My hubby had the Italia pizza (with added anchovies) and it truly was a feast for the eyes. I didn't taste it, but he thoroughly enjoyed it. Maybe next time!

I only realized recently that the legendary Chef Pellie Grobler is at the helm of this restaurant. The quality of the meals speaks volumes! Continuing his mission to change Pretoria one meal at a time. Great job!

We will definitely be back - I saw quite a few dishes on the menu that I will be dreaming about until then! Oh yes, and that wild mushroom risotto.

Have visited many times. Great food. Great wine. Good and friendly service. Relaxing outdoor setting. Ambience is awesome. Always a winner, for us!

Excellent food. Excellent service. Friendly waiters. Beautiful place. Wonderful ambiance! Will definitely go back for more! The gardens are beautiful and well looked after.

We went there today for our anniversary and at first i thought, a café mmm it's not going to be so wow and fancy (and i like fancy). But to my surprise this place was warm, inviting and not a café at all. The food was outstanding. The waiter forgot about us a few times, but we had good wine and good food and what more do you need.
Let's say that i was so into the food i forgot to take pictures haha. We had the calamari stuffed with prawn for starter, duck for main.

We had a great experience at Tin Roof Cafe. It’s quite a drive as the place is rather remote, but it is definitely worth it! Fantastic setting and great service. We really enjoyed the food (Seabass special and Filet Primavera). As appetizer a rosemary focaccia with tapenade.
The chef also came to check on our experience. Really wonderful, we’ll be back!

Couldn’t have chosen a better place for Sunday Lunch in this beautiful and quite restaurant. And luck would have it I was meant to eat here because we got the last available table, so my advice would be to book in advance so that you are on the safer side. Service was very friendly and I must say I enjoyed their pizza thoroughly, sadly I wasn’t particularly hungry so couldn’t explore the food much but I’ll definitely come back here, doesn’t even feel like you are in Pretoria anymore. A definite must try.

Great food, great service, great setting! Tin Roof makes you feel like your far away from home in the middle of the countryside, its really has a proper country atmosphere. The food is always fresh and delicious and I will definitely return again soon. The only drawback is the dirt road to get there, however, if you want a country atmosphere, I guess that's part of the experience.

Whether you are in the mood for a "day-in-the-country" under the trees or a cozy, romantic lunch/dinner inside, Tin Roof Cafe is the place to go. Just a beautiful place with a great ambiance. TRC is perfect for any occasion. The staff was friendly and efficient. We ordered pasta and pizza which was really delicious and flavorsome. I would recommend Tin Roof Cafe.

The only bad thing I have to say about this place is that there are dirt roads going to the restaurant.

The food was absolutely amazing , definitely one of the best pizzas I've had. The jalapeño poppers was also really good and was actually a little spicy.

The restaurant is very intimate and is perfect for a date night or a small family supper.

The scenery is really pretty , fairy lights, water features , along with a really pretty garden.

Tin Roof Café has a lovely, quiet and peaceful atmosphere, with fairy lights surrounding the tables. The place itself is beautifully decorated with fountains and design cut plants. We received a warm welcome from the manager (I presume) and our tables were ready for us when we arrived. Table decor was above average. Service was mediocre; not bad, but nothing special. Our food arrived quite quickly (we were 12 people). The plating was beautiful and well presented. The flavour of the food was delicious and very enjoyable, although some of the textures were average. (The pasta of the ragú was somewhat crispy) Dessert was nice, but nothing exceptional. Although, some people who accompanied me, enjoyed their dessert to the fullest. TRC is a lovely restaurant with a tranquil atmosphere, pleasant food, and friendly service, but because their location is "in the middle of nowhere", I expect higher quality hospitality for me to return and travel the long distance.

My fiance and I popped in to Tin Roof for dinner spontaneously. The hostess was very accommodating and found us a lovely table although they were full. The food was exquisite. The service was excellent. We will definitely be returning.

Every time we visit Tin Roof Cafe we are greeted with a warm and welcoming smile before being seated at our table and being offered a something to drink immediately. The great service doesn't stop there, but continues right until you walk out of the door! The food and atmosphere match this great attentiveness, making Tin Roof one of our favorite places to eat!

Friendly service, food was excellent. Very tasteful and well presented. Great atmosphere. Would definitely recommended this restaurant for any occasion.

Best pizza ever!! I had the chicken pizza it was surely amazing and so fresh!! Can't wait to try the rest of the menu!! The outside dining area is so relaxed and beautiful garden setting! Love the fairy lights at night, the atmosphere is extraordinary!!

Awesome. Food was divine. Set up is great. Chilled atmosphere. Welcoming was warm. Service was very good. Not so far away from town either.

In short, I would definitely go again & would recommend.

Tin roof cafe is one of the restaurants with the most beautiful aesthetics and ambiance I have been to. As you park and get out of your car realizing you are away from the rush of the town life, one is greeted by the gorgeous fairy lights in the trees, the old school yet classic water feature and rustic farm house building! The owner/ manager is always friendly and one feels very welcomed to be there. The seating area inside and out has a great feel to it and one forgets all about the busy day you had! Especially after a glass of wine on their exquisite and very reasonable wine list. The menu is wide and they often have specials! My experience here was very good! They were a bit short on staff so our poor waiter was a bit overwhelmed but he did well despite that. I really hope they change the menu a bit in the future as its always good but hasn't really changed in a long time, making frequent visits hard to try new things! I definitely recommend this place. It is an old favorite and I certainly will be returning!

I'm going to start this review quite differently, I'm starting with dessert. The most amazing dessert of the year certainly was this beautifully balanced tiramisu cheesecake. If someone is a lover of coffee and cheesecake it doesn't get better than this. These ladies sure are doing an excellent job. The setting is so so so nice. The risotto is one of the best in Pretoria after viva vitas seafood risotto! Full of flavor. But with that in mind, I actually invite whoever is going here to please try their rump. Yassssss it's the best steak I've had this year. Cooked to perfection. I had to ask my partner if it wasn't fillet because it was so perfectly soft and beautiful. I would say that the pizzas however are quite mediocre. I will certainly return here to try the rest of the menu.

Went to Tin Roof Cafe for my birthday dinner and I don't regret it one bit.
This place is almost an hour drive from home and on the way I kept thinking to myself - I hope the food is good since we driving so far 😂
Please do take note that you do have to go on a small patch of gravel road, at this point we actually thought we were lost but I guess those adventure instincts just kicked in.

Tin roof cafe is a lovely farm/country setting restaurant. The lady that served us was just amazing with a smile on her face and you could just see how enthusiastic and passionate she was about what she did.

We had a chicken and fig pizza with avocado for starters.
Then we proceeded to mains and our preeminent thing we came for was the Risotto. The lady suggested we try the Grilled beef rump Padano risotto with biltong, feta and portabellini mushroom sauce. This was the highlight of the evening. The way they prepared the risotto so well and the beef rump was cooked just the way we wanted it. The mushroom sauce was just divine. The food presentation is on its own so good.

For dessert we opted for the Tiramisu cheesecake drizzled with a decadent chocolate sauce - found on the specials menu. One bite and I knew what I was in for. Silky smooth texture and the coffee flavor just comes out. Really enjoyed it and will definitely take the long drive to pay them a visit again :)

Tin Roof Cafe is one of those venues where you have to make a booking to avoid disappointment.

The setting is really nice and out of town. Absolutely stunning on a sunny winters day.

We had salads to share as a starter. The combinations were quite different, interesting and very tasty.

The mains were just as stunning and the above average service made our day. Their Risotto is by far the best in Pretoria.

There is more than enough reason to return 😄😄

I honestly don't mind giving 5 stars where 5 stars are due. This nonsense of people won't take the review seriously can fly a kite! 5 star means - Excellent. And that is exactly what this experience was. Beautiful setting, great service, great value for money and amazing food! Staff are on point and very attentive and great to see the kind of passion for a business like this. Do yourself a favour and make the 20 min trip from Pretoria and go to this gem.

Wow, a friend and I visited this place yesterday! Wow! Good food, good coffee, tranquil surroundings. Nothing like a sunny day with a good cup of coffee while watching kids play in the garden, horses in the background. I would definitely visit this place again.

This restaurant is absolutely amazing. It is rare to find a restaurant with both excellent food and service.

The location is a little out of the way. However, the restaurant is charming and perfect for a Sunday lunch or date night.

We started with the rosemary focaccia, the tropical pizza, calamari, holloumi, pear and prosciutto salad.

We had the rack the lamb, chicken under a brick, chicken scallopini, pizza nomu and fillet pepper steak as our mains.

The dishes were superb and thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.

I'm looking forward to yet another dining experience there.

I've been wanting to try this place out for a while, and what a gem it is! From the hearty welcome you receive at the door, right through to the very last bite of yummy food, it's a lovely experience. The specials menu is definitely worth trying out - I had a fresh and flavorful springbok salad to start, and both my mother and I had pork belly mains. The mains are massive portions, but too good not to finish. The wine selection is fair. I will be returning - I've earmarked a few dishes that I simply must try out. Sunday lunch won't be the same again!

This review is overdue and thinking about it was definitely one of my best experiences of the year! I looked for a restaurant out of town to take my in-laws (visiting from Glasgow) and we were not disappointed. On a Friday afternoon, down a fairly long dirt road, a beautiful tin roof building with gardens, a warm & generous welcome, horses in a nearby field, birds singing and beetles chirping .. Idyllic. We spent a beautiful afternoon in the garden having a long, lazy, lovely lunch ! We started with poppers which I am not sure are still on the menu - yummy - then I had steak with peppercorn sauce and the in-laws both chose chicken scaloppine, my husband had the Norwegian salmon absolutely fabulous, there was nothing left on our plates & IF polite company allowed I think we may have licked them !! And then for dessert I had the passion pavlova which was sublime .. Service was attentive, thoughtful & efficient. My mother-in-law is still talking about our meal 2 months later !

Heard about the Tin Roof café from a friend and when I phoned to book for a Sunday lunch was told they were full ...... had to be good. Had lunch there today and was totally blown away by the gorgeous setting, incredible staff and amazing food. An absolute gem and one of Pretoria's best kept secrets. I plan on returning until I have worked myself through the entire menu!!!

What a hidden gem in Pretoria. Went here for a family lunch, and I was totally surprised by this cute place. Lovely outside area. Relaxing atmosphere, great tasting food and good service. What more do you need. ;)

Incredible experience. I did not know that food could taste this good. Between my wife and I: Calamari, Mussels, Pizza, Pork Duo, Chocolate Brownie.. Everyone needs to visit this incredible place that seems to be exceptionally well managed and hands on. Thank you.

This cute restaurant was one of my favourites of all time. Such a stunning setting, a warm welcome by the owner and very attentive service. The food tasted great, the wine went down so well while we overlooked all the other happy diners peacefully enjoying their Sunday lunch. All in all it was a great experience and we will definitely be back. Thank you

I love this place!! Not only is it a haven just outside the city, but it is family friendly and has some of the best bistro style food! When there try the chicken livers or green carpaccio for starters, the pork belly or lamb shank for mains and always always the pavlova for dessert.
Suzanne Crozier
My favourite restaurant in the city. You can escape for the day and be treated to glorious hearty food. I've never had a bad meal there. For any special occasion Tin roof is the place to go. Good wine list, great service and excellent food. The passion fruit pavlova is my absolute favourite.

Old house with a beautiful garden setting, amazing food, gorgeously presented and well priced. The menu is simple but comprehensive. Worth the trip out of town.

Hearty , homemade ,mouth watering dishes. Ordered the carpaccio for starters which was delicious (be careful to not order the green carpaccio which is the vegetarian option as the menu doesn't make it that clear ). Gnocchi was also delicious. Awesome intimate, homey atmosphere. Book in advance especially on Sunday's.

It's been about 5 years since I've been to this restaurant so definitely have to give it another look to update the service and food, but from what I can remember, the pizzas are exquisite! Don't drop by for just a quick bite because the scenery is stunning which makes one want to relax, sit back and enjoy both the beautiful venue and the stunning food! Service is friendly and efficient if my memory serves me right. Tin Roof Cafe , we will definitely be visiting sometime soon. Hope you're ready for us!

What a cute gem in Pretoria. Came here for dinner with friends and family tonight. We were a rather large table but the staff and service was fantastic. The food was even better. I had the mushroom fillet (a special) and it was absolutely delicious, cooked to perfection and super soft. Cannot wait to bring my boyfriend here soon. What a treat. 5 stars for them.
