Review The View Tapas Cafe & Bar - Plettenberg Bay

Graham Barry
If you're in Plettenberg on a Sunday, Barrington's is one of few restaurant options. So thankfully it is very good. The menu is inventive and extensive, including plenty of lighter or meat-free options. The wine list is extensive, plus they have their own microbrewery. Any restaurant would be lucky to have a front-of-house team like this. Every staff member was warm, proactive, efficient and quick to build rapport. Adjoining the restaurant, there's a bakery and food shop full of interesting SA-made treats.

A great place for lunch or dinner with family / friends. The grounds are well maintained with freshly grown vegetables and herbs as you enter. The menu had plenty of options and the live music was appreciated

During our stay in Plettenberg Bay, we had the privilege (& I mean privilege) to eat twice at Barringtons. Both times was in the evening so I can’t comment on their daytime meals. We had a table right next to the roaring fire & it was the perfect spot. Not so perfect for the people sitting near the door which was constantly opening and closing. They were frozen by the end of the evening. First up - value for your buck (& food) is their current winter 2023 dinner menu. 3 courses for R245 without a glass of wine & R300 with wine. There is also a choice of a 2 course meal. Our first meal there, we chose the 3 course meal (without wine) & chose all the vegetarian options. Pear & blue cheese salad to start for me (enough for 2 persons) & the most sublime potato & leek soup for him. Main course was excellent melt in your mouth beer battered fish - 2 generous pieces & excellent thick cut chips. Partner had the Thai red curry which was packed with fresh veggies, beautifully presented & deemed excellent & filling. They had run out of chocolate brownies so we settled on the sticky toffee pudding (very sweet but served without ice cream which would have complimented the dish) & a delicious Amarula Dom Pedro. I can highly recommend the winter special as value for money. The 2nd meal was Dahl spring rolls (dish of the day in my opinion) & sumac roasted cauliflower. Main was tagliatelle with mushrooms & thyme - excellent! Dessert was the chocolate fondant which made all the calories worth it. Ambience of Barrington’s is social, loud and with the beer factory to greet you when you walk in the door makes it an overall highly recommended restaurant to eat at. A special mention to the manager on the floor both evenings who welcomed us back as long lost friends. Thank you for taking the time to chat to us. I recommend you check out their website to see what is on offer but a trip to Plett will never again be without eating at Barrington’s numerous times. I can’t recommend this spot enough. Edit: they also offer Friday night burger & beer nights & movie with dinner nights. Both of these evenings need to be booked beforehand and the manager assured me they were full house on the evenings.

After 2 weeks in SA, I want to say that it was the best food I had so far! The taste of everything was just amazing. Beer tasting is interesting - 5 nice beers produced there in a brewery. Our waitress was taking care of us really well. Thank you so much for such a great experience!

This place doesn’t look like much from the outside but it completely transforms when you walk inside, you would have no clue there was a main road right there when you’re sitting in the restaurant! You arrive to a beautiful white boxed kitchen garden absolutely chocked with vegetables. The main building has a bakery, grocery, brewery, restaurant and more and it’s all designed so well, I was very impressed. The restaurant itself is lovely with live music, I got the mushroom and thyme tagliatelle and it was AMAZING. The portions are definitely big so we didn’t need the starter. 10/10 visit if in the area!!!

A tasteful menu full of shareable starters and mains in a huge restaurant that has different vibes throughout, want a fun bar scene, they got it, need a romantic ambience, no problem. Not only is the setting beautiful, they have great pieces of artwork throughout the place and even a small grocery section with unique items for you to bring home to your kitchen. This rememberable evening was topped by frequent visits from the managing staff making sure everything was perfect for us, which it was.

We loved this place!!! Went there for drinks and dessert last night and were really excited about the atmosphere, the service and of course the beer and dessert selection. So we decided to come back for lunch today. I had the trout and my boyfriend ordered the steak. Service was good again and the food was delicious. I enjoyed every bite. We also picked up a bread and a pastry at the bakery counter. As i was not so impressed with south african pastries so far, the almond croissant was surprisingly very, very tasty - so tasty i was sad i didn't buy 2 of them.

We are still sitting here and I am giving those 5 stars because this entire atmosphere is amazing! We had as main menu the chicken and the lamb. The chicken was really good but this lamb was the best we ever had! If you like lamb try it! Starters, wine, desert, everything was great!

Delicious food in a lovely atmosphere! The waiting was not short and we immediately got the a wonderful menu. As main I had a lamb rice coconut curry which was also delicious and recommendable! They have a lovely are around where a lot of kids played and also there is a garden with own grown herbs which they use.

My family and I have been coming to this restaurant for more than 10 years. We were heavily disappointed with the revamp from Rod and Reel to The View.

Rod and Reel was an old school family restaurant with high standards in terms of food, service and ambiance. The View unfortunately fell short on all of the above.

The food was bland to say the least. The choice of sides are limited (no veggie options available). I had the calamari and it was served without tarter sauce. My dad had the thai curry and it looked like a dish out of a chinese takeaway shop. Also, gone are the days of complimentary, freshly baked bread before your meal.

The service was not up to scratch. Our food was served without black pepper. When I asked for tomato sauce, it was serviced in a bottle without a cap. Also, some of the waiters were not dressed appropriately.

The ambiance in the restaurant has dissappeared with the old Rod and Reel. There was an attempt to modernize the restaurant and the menu, but there was a definite lack of vision. A lot of pop and dance music was played while my family and I tried to enjoy a relaxing and quiet meal. I don't know whether the owners want to transform the place into a bar.

The only positives about the place were the masjestic views over the ocean and the good wine selection.

RIP the Rod and Reel.

We had a wonderful surprise when we had lunch at this newly launched establishment which has been reinvented by Chef Rich?
Wonderful take on tapas food. Good service and a well stocked bar; a bit let down with a rather ordinary wine list and no beer on tap. i am told this will be rectified.👍😊
