Review Le Fournil De Plett Bakery And Cafe - Plettenberg Bay

Harrison Markotter
Went here for breakfast, really enjoyed our time. My girlfriend and I got a toasted cheese with tomato and crossiant with bacon and eggs respectively. She said hers was meh, saying it was nothing special. Mine however the crossiant was absolutely divine a really nice sized and tasting crossiant with great eggs and bacon. The lemonade was amazing and the milkshake she had which was their Chai option was really good. Service was a bit slow as they were really busy. But not the worst.

Le Fournil Bakery is located in the boutique Lookout Centre and the restaurant is on the top floor (okay there are only two floors, but it still gives a great view over the town). Service was sharp and efficient. Thanks so much to the server staff (whose name currently escapes me) but they made the experience special. The food was well-prepared and tasty. What more do you need? There is additional seating in the courtyard as well as the balcony and you can see that some regulars have their favourite spots. Pricing is very attractive and it would be a good idea to see this concept expended to other places – especially small towns. The wheelchair seems a bit steep.

Very nice Bakery with excellent breakfast, you find a broad variety of sweet and savoury dishes like pancakes or sandwitches. Also juices and smoothies. Very nice terrace with tables under the tree. Very nice flair!

After many visits to Plett, we finally found the opportunity to visit Le Fournil on a rainy winters day. The fireplace was a nice touch! It was the soup that drew us but we discovered so much more. The sandwiches on rye/sourdough was fantastic. the bean and fennel sausage soup did not disappoint. We shared some decadent desserts, which rounded off the meal well. some apple crumble, carrot cake and the delectable chocolate chaud (hot chocolate with dark choc and cream). The coffee was great as well. Many more items to try on the well-priced menu, so we will definitely be back. we were hungry, so the food disappeared before photos could be taken 😁

Coffee great! Atmosphere amazing! Cake the best!! To start of the location is so unique and secluded it makes you feel like you are in a different country. We had a vegan Almond and citrus cake that was delicious and very moist, we had a basque cheesecake that tasted very similar to the original basque cheesecake from Spain, and an Almond croissant that was also very tasty. We paired that with a flat white and Cortado both flavored and well balanced coffees. Will definitely recommend this as a MUST when you visit Plettenberg Bay

The croissants are so amazing, staff is friendly and atmosphere is really refreshing.

No need for too much words- this place serves the best breakfast in all South Africa!!
Hey Demi Ann (Demi Ann)
Lovely bakery , with really good strong coffee and amazing croissants. Very French feel which is great with so much space to sit either on their lovely patio overlooking Main Street, inside the bakery or under the trees out front. Very relaxing with really friendly staff that were very quick to help always. Definite good value for money !

Beautiful decor inside, very nice atmosphere. Food was delicious and well presented, surprised me as I was not sure what to expect, as was not so sure off this place. Coffee was nice and strong and Bell and Matthew the waiters were very friendly and extremely helpful! They bread 🍞 is lovery we took some home too and for my father in-law. Overall I would definitely come back and recommend it!

The most secluded gem in Plettenberg. Love the French courtyard feel. The bakery and food is absolutely 💯 tops! Just love eating here. In winter the fireplace keeps you cozy while enjoying delicious comfort foods.

Stunning quaint breakfast bakery in Plett. Really a must visit and definitely sit down and try their tarts. Breakfast is good, had an English breakfast. Scramble eggs were fluffy and bacon and sausage was great, the portions were good too and really decent. They have lovely breads and options to choose from that are freshly baked in the morning. You can pop in grab a laof and and be in your way. Service a good, your order is brought to in a good period of time. Will say staff does need to be a bit more cheerful but can't crit since I've only been there one. Might of been an off day. Over all experience is a 4/5

Wonderful breakfast with authentic French baked goods. Great juices, coffee and service. Very nice spot in a courtyard in the shades of a beautiful tree.
Lara Mullins
My favorite place in Plett. Lovely food and atmosphere but what makes this place truly special is the exceptional staff. Such special people, they keep me coming back and add so much value to the establishment.

Today i have been here for breakfast. There is a home made, glutenfree (but with oats) granola with yoghurt and fruit salad. I also ate the cheesecake, which has no base. Because it was so good (absolutely creamy and fudgy) i also took one slice for take away as well as a slice of the almond citrus cake and the financiers.
John Harris
Breakfast croissant was really good. Pastries and cakes taken home for the kids were much appreciated.
Roy
Wonderful shaded courtyard to have breakfast! A variety of gluten free cakes (we tried the citrus-almond, recommended😊) Coffee was good also :)

Absolutely love the real LIVE French chanson singer! Wow! Chowed down on an almond croissant 🥐 🥐 and a chocolat chaud!! Wow and woo! Bring it on. Are they playing every Saturday 10-1300? Hope so. We’ll be back. And Real freshly squeezed juice. And coffee and breakfast. Eggs and the real deal. Be French for the day in Plett. Yummy!

Le Fournil - a great experience! I'll start by mentioning what I likes less: The frothed milk was too hot to my taste. The burger is not the best item on the menu (I would reccomend trying the French dishes) Now with that being said, I canention the good things : The staff is kind and professional, The eggs Benedict are perfect The sourdough bread is wonderful, And any other thing my girlfriend and I ordered was just on point. The coffe is great. The dirty chai is perfectly balanced And the cheese cake is the best one I've had. So so good!! For breakfast lovers and baked goods enthusiasts, I warmly recommend this place! Bon appétit !
Ling
Mediocre service, the restaurant only wins because of its location and setting. The croissant is below average as I had the salmon croissant. Service is also slow and non attentive
Amy Wardle
Really cute place in Plett that serves all day breakfast (very handy). The staff are friendly and efficient and the overall theme is well executed. The smoked trout is fantastic quality and they always nail the egg order. Special mention must go to their almond croissants, best I’ve ever hand and highly acclaimed!
Natalie Lazaris
The smell says it all. A delicious bakery, with a French flair. Great for breakfast. Their almond latte is just incredible. Worth the visit. In season very busy, but we'll worth the wait.

Cuppycake
As much as i wanted to enjoy this place, there is literally no positives.
First of all we had to wait 5min for menu's and later had to fetch it ourselves as no waiters brought us any and ignored us.
As soon as we got menu's we waited a further 15min just to order drinks and only received it 15min later.
By this time we were pretty fed up and decided not to order anything further.
Very disappointing experience, hopefully they can pull themselves together and become more organized so that this place can live up to the potencial it portrays.

Unfortunately this one is below par on one side and way above expectations on the other... the egg and bacon breakfast is way over priced and lacking in every way possible... to be charged extra for a tablespoon of jam is pathetic.... yet on the other hand the almond croissant is magical....
the service and ambience is reminiscent of a traditional Dutch koffiehuis...,, nice but won’t rush back ... even with the best company ever
Julia Tooke
Amazing coffee and such a lovely homely atmosphere - this spot is as good as I remember it being years ago. We had the most delicious eggs benny, just a pity about the slow service and my hollandaise was not put on the side as requested. I would definitely still come back though!
Ilan Ben-David
Absolutely nothing to complain about. Very seldom a restaurant gets the honour of 5 Stars. All the waiters were extremely helpful, service was impeccable even though the restaurant was packed to capacity! My only regret is not being able to try more things on the menu. Had El Porridge and Bacon & Eggs as well as the chicken mayo pesto sandwich, all were absolutely delicious.

The decor inside is also very authentic and warm. Staff make you feel comfortable, and the decor makes you feel almost as if you're having a meal at home! Highly recommended to anyone looking for a great cafe and breakfast spot, without breaking the wallet!
Raquel Unterslak
What amazing little gem! We went here for a quick meal while on honeymoon. The service was quick and the staff were really friendly. Our food was amazing! I had a Frienze sandwich and my husband had the prego roll. Both were delicious and very reasonably priced!
Jessica Armstrong
All I can say is YUM best bakery in Plet. We are making this place our regular spot in Plett. Their breakfasts and pastries are the stuff of legends. Loved eating here and we will be back! We took a full two boxes of takeaways back to Joburg because the baked goods were so incredible.
Samantha Hops
The only breakfast place worth going to in Plett! If you come to get their truth coffee then definitely give the almond croissants a try too, its worth it...
Lloyd Nicholson
I was very disappointed at the service I received on Saturday. It took 1 hour to receive our simple lunch meals. The waitress didn’t offer any reasons as to why the meal was taking so long. The food that was served wasn’t what was ordered and one meal wasn’t served at all. The overall experience was poor and I won’t be going back.
Daniel Isaacs
Myself and my friend both ordered the open sandwiches, we each received a slice of bread with a thin layer of chicken and roast beef on top, very disappointing quantity of toppings. Along with this the side salads were just lettuce
Juan Van Wyk
One of the nicest places to have a meal in Plettenberg. The service was a bit slow but other than that they were very accommodating. They adjusted items on the menu in order to meet my dietary restrictions. The manager of the place was very friendly and sweet. Would be great if they could add a vegan option to the baked goods!
Stelios Chasou
Great little bakery in Plettenberg. Based on the main road overlooking the street. Service is friendly. We had breakfast which was very good. Pastries seemed very good and popular.
Andre Roodt
Service is very slow , food came out cold , plates were left on the table till I took them to the kitchen, doesn't seam like there is a manager here at the store at the Formosa inn
Renate Le Roux
Visited Le Fournil for a cup of coffee over a good book today - lovely atmosphere and lovely coffee. Service is a bit slow and they forgot about a second cappuccino that I ordered, but they were particularly busy, so it could be chalked up to that.
Megan Thomas
Do yourself a favor and go grab a coffee and an almond croissant from Le Fournil. I guarantee you will have no regrets. The menu has a range of delicious food and anything you pick will be worth it!
Pia Harris
The most heavenly almond croissant's ever! I have been on a quest to find the perfect almond croissant for the last two years and honestly THIS IS IT. So delicious, I ate two and didn't bother to take a pic.

Almost worth the drive up from Cape Town just for a coffee & decadent pastry. Fortunately I pass through Plett quite often. Happy days!

P.S they are always packed and service can be slow - be prepared to be patient.
Gnyahuye
What a little gem! The quiche, the blueberry tea, the almond croissant. The service. Yes! This is one of those spots you'd be happy to drive an hour on the N2, from Knysna, to Pletts - purely for that single experience. Keep it up guys.

As a pastry lover, I so badly wish this place would improve on a few things. Most importantly, they are a bit crazy with their prices. 35 ZAR for a croissant just because it has almonds? I admit it is a good croissant, but not THAT good. 50 ZAR for a slice of cheesecake?
Their mains are also way too expensive for their casual-style. The "madame" option only includes 1 egg and they charge nearly 90 ZAR. I find it pretty cheeky.
Unfortunately, the service here was also bad, i.e. our waiter forgot to bring us our food,it took a long time to be seen, etc.
Johan Van Dyk
Amazing cheesecake and carrot cake. To die for!
Centrally located and nice view as well. Service was ok. Highly recommended for a cake tasting :)
Breakfast is quite expensive. I ordered the English breakfast for R85. Overrated with the skimpy bacon. I'm sure there are other breakfast places for better value.

Apart from the slow service (it seems Le Fournil was understaffed today - plenty of runners, but almost no waiters), this was a solid choice and worth a visit for a coffee shop / bistro vibe. Their Apple Crumble was a standout, as were their crisps. Out of season this would be a great choice.

Le Fournil, is a beautiful french bakery/ restaurant situated in the heart of Plett! They have a beautiful seating area which gives a very European vibe to the place specially because of the people, and style of the place! The coffee they use is Truth Coffee which is a very good coffee and in general is quite acidic. But during a breakfast rush when one doesn't get time to be to particular they can sometimes over or under extract their espresso shots. The menu is wide and even offers wine. Proper french pastries and breads are available. The service is good and food as well, portions and consistency varies sometimes, but despite this it stays one of Pletts gems.
David Orleow
We met on a cool Monday morning for a 10:00 brunch at the new bakery at the Formosa inn. We ordered some coffees and croissants. While they got the order wrong it was all tasty and fresh. We than placed our mains order at about 10:30. At 12:00 they told us they were yet to begin on our table's order. The restaurant wasn't particularly busy and frankly as I sit here, I don't care how good the food is that may or may not arrive. This is pathetic. What a disappointment.
Linda
The Fournil is a pretty place with seats in a lovely courtyard. We had the Haloumi Niçoise Salad. It was nice, maybe the haloumi could have done with a bit less grilling. We expected to have potatoes and eggs, and any Niçoise salad, but it was nice anyway!
We also had the veg Haloumi Burger, with super yummy thin & crunchy chips😋😋😋! The service was nice, with young polite waiters 😊overall a new nice light lunch! ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Great coffee. Really great coffee. Almond croissants to die for. Everything ordered was delicious. Unfortunately they couldn't get the sunny-side-up eggs right. Twice. But everything else fantastic.

Fabulous bakery, with French flair!
Friendly staff, who know their menu, make good alternative recommendations. The coffee is good, the flapjacks (American pancakes) amazing!!! Lots of exciting things on the menu! Everything that came out of the kitchen looked delicious! Pity we are only in Plett for a weekend. Definitely worth going back to try everything!

OH my god!!!!!!!!! The almond croissants are just better than anything on earth! Go invest in an almond croissant from this awesome bakery!
Anet
Super freshly baked breads make for lovely sandwiches or breakfast plates. The service is good and the choice of siting in either the courtyard or on the patio is a good start. The almond croissant is flaky and a real treat. I had the salmon and cream cheese sandwich & enjoyed it with a baguette and then rye, which was lovely on both days, but for some reason the capuccino has a sour note that I just did not like
Talia Lee Cohen
A charming courtyard that is understandably busy. I had the almond croissant! Well it was an astounding R33 😳 (apparently they had a special offer for 3 days that had just ended where it was R18 - cunning marketing strategy!) Nevertheless, the croissant was the perfect sweetness, with a beautiful smear of butter right in the middle. Mmmmm! Cute takeaway box too 🎁

This is a real gem. Freshly baked croissants and very good Truth coffee. Service was friendly and the restaurant has a relaxed atmosphere. The french toast was excellent. The eggs benedict was average.

After a long day of hiking in Robberg Sea Reserve. We stopped off for a delicious filter coffee and a large tomato soup with homemade bread. To finish it off Candice and I had the baked macadamia cheese cake. I don't know what was better the hike or the food......

Excellent lunch ! The bread, the pastry the steak all superb ! Service was friendly & excellent one of the best restaurants in Plettenberg bay

A cold and wet morning in Plett left us looking for a warm local eatery for breakfast. We stumbled upon Le Fournil, on Main Road (thanks to The Entertainer), and instantly recognised this hidden gem as a locals' favourite. Warm, cozy and famous for their freshly baked breads, Le Fournil was buzzing with hardly a table to spare (a rarity in Plett in June).

A wide variety of french themed breakfast specials, we tucked into eggs benedict with salmon, which hit the spot. The hollandaise sauce was awesome. A little on the pricey side for a local breakfast but use an Entertainer voucher and it really offers great value. A real find!

The atmosphere and decor was lovely, very cozy. The coffee and tea was amazing. The food was also amazing. We had sandwiches and they were delicious as well as reasonably priced. The service was a little slow but they were quite full which is always a good sign. I would highly recommend this restaurant if you are in the Plett area.

A Parisian delight in Plett. Good coffee and lots of freshly baked goodies! The coffee was good and the almond croissant was delish! Very decadent but so good! The salmon sandwich was good too. Worth a visit for fresh baked bread and goods or a relaxed breakfast or lunch.

A 'must go to' when in Plett, and be sure to get there early as it does fill up rather quickly!!

I gave Le Fournil a quick visit, initially, to try the sought after croissant aux amandes (almond croissant). If you are expecting a croissant in the traditional sense, you will be disappointed. While it is a sweet pastry, it's not really a croissant in the traditional sense, however it is spectacular in its own right. A definite try, and ensure you pick up some artisanal bread on your way out! They serve Truth coffee, which is a firm favourite too.

The only downer: I've been a few times now, and as they are so busy, you tend to wait quite a while for your meal to be served. Buuuut, particularly when ordering from the bakery side, it's worth the wait!
Jess Weisz
If you've been to Plett and you haven't tried Le Fournil, then I'm going to have to put it bluntly: you haven't done Plett properly.

Here we finally have the epitome of what one would want from a Garden Route bakery: quaint, delicious, cozy, affordable, fresh, tasteful, vibey and - just to top it off - good service too. Best part about it: hearty food made with intention.

My only complaint would be the diction of the menu. To have 'Madam' and 'Monsieur' portion sizes in 2016 is backwards. I'm sorry, but being hungry and wanting a full portion size is not an inherently masculine trait. A girl has gotta eat too!

Nonetheless, probably the best iced coffee I've had in SA! Will be back.
Ilze Boonzaaier
We always plan our trips to fit in a Le Fournil breakfast. Unfortunately, it seems there's a lot of mixed reviews. Depending on the day or season the food, coffee and service quality is inconsistent. My absolute favourite is the Pain Perdu, but the french toast was dry and the apple compote heavily undercooked. Hubby's croissant croque was a winner, so tasty and just perfect! Coffee really disappointing this time round. But then again, the fresh chocolate croissant makes up for it. Still remains one of my fav Plett spots.
Megz Mackintosh
This hidden gem is a must in plett! Enjoyed the most delicious breakfast & good service. The English breakfast with a croissant, scrambled egg & bacon is just too good. Will hopefully try a lunch here sometime soon.

After all the hype surrounding Le Fournil de Plet Bakery we decided to give it a try this morning... I was very disappointed!👎🏻 The coffee was good and initially the service was up to standard but as the breakfast rush poured in the service got steadily worse👎🏻 The food was tasty but all the meals were cold when served and had to be sent back to be reheated👎🏻 This resturant does not deserve its celebrity-like status and while I've heard good things prior to my experience, I will certainly not be returning in a hurry!
Daniel Wiggill
To advertise that you serve "truth" coffee and that your baristas are trained there is a massive draw card pity they don't live up to the name. Incepid coloured milk cappuccino s was the order of the day. The croissants were light but obviously over baked. Service was good, a must try is the chicken liver pate. Stick to being awesome bread bakers leave the coffee to those who have an interest.
Kevin Simon
The coffee was really nice! Probably the best coffee I've had. The food was really nice! The vibe was ok but its just really busy which means you'll have to wait a bit before they find you a table. The service however was appalling!
Mike Emanuel
Coffee was awful. Food was mediocre. Service was beyond appalling. Have been before and enjoyed it (barring the service) so it could have been a bad day food wise. Hugely unimpressed
Trinka Mynhardt
As a Plett local, I have been dining at Le Fournil for years, and it's still one of my favourite spots! If you feel like the freshest chocolate or almond (or chocolate-almond) croissants, French inspired breakfasts or delicious open sandwiches, this is the place. My personal favorite, and a meal I HAVE to order every time I come back to Plett is the Firenze chicken, avo and Parmesan sandwich, enjoyed with a glass of homemade lemonade. A very special bakery with the nicest atmosphere, absolutely love this bakery!
Lauras World
Stopped at this busy little artisanal bakery this morning for some breakfast in the Lookout Centre whilst doing some last minute Christmas shopping and it was decent enough!

Young, smiling students who were friendly.. and a decent breakfast. I selected their Norwegian croissant and the smoked chorizo with artisanal bread.

I also love the big old tree in the courtyard and how it has been decorated up as a large Christmas tree. Very colourful and festive! The place was packed!
David Leibowitz
The most delicious breakfast experience in Plett! The croissant with scrambled eggs and bacon really hits the spot in the morning, and the general atmosphere really puts you in the holiday mood. Don't miss out on the almond croissants!
Jana Lorraine Pretorius
This fantastic little spot was recommended to me by a family friend who said she literally went there every day for the almond croissants, while on holiday in the area. During my own trip up the Garden Route recently, I made sure to stop over and sample the goods. I left with a quiche, some almond croissants, a mini apple crumble, an almond tartlet, and a lemon curd tartlet. The products are utterly, outrageously delicious, served fresh out of the oven, and quite literally melt in your mouth. The almond croissant certainly was the champion of the lot though. I am both sad and relieved that I don't live close by, otherwise I'd also be munching their exquisite baked delights all day long.
Kirsty Donald
Le Fournil is one of the best places to get breakfast and coffee in Plett. It can get super busy in season and the service becomes a bit slow but out of season it is great. I love their chocolate brownies and almond croissants. Definitely a must try.
Jacqueline Koch
Nice warm, cosy atmosphere on a cold, wet morning. Intimate and chic yet casual dining. We came here for breakfast although their lunch menu looked so enticing we almost stayed for the next shift!
They bake their own bread so you have numerous options for breakfast and can be guaranteed it's fresh. We indulged in their famous croissant - the almond one being their most popular choice. Out of this world. You can't leave Plett without stopping here for at least a croissant and a hot cup of coffee
Rich Torlage
The freshly baked breads and croissants are delicious! Such a pleasant place for an early breakfast or brunch. You have to try the almond croissants and get there early to avoid not getting any, or a table if plett is busy.
Julia Kaleta
Visiting this little French bakery for breakfast or stopping by to get some of their freshly baked goods is a must! The chocolate almond croissant is one of my favorites, warm, straight out of the oven, with the chocolate melting in the middle. For breakfast, try the Croissnat-Croque
Travis
This quaint bakery makes the best Almond croissants I have ever tasted. The coffee (Truth coffee) is good too. When the weather is good I recommend sitting on the balcony overlooking the Main Street.
Mia
This spot is a bit hidden, but once you find it, it is beautiful. They have a very nice outside seating area and a stoep. I ordered the salmon trout on rye. After waiting a very long time for our food, we eventually got it. The rye toast was burned and I struggled to cut it with a knife. It was a very small portion for the price that they charged. My partner's meusli looked like it came from the bottom of the bag. The coffee was good, but when we got it, it was so hot, we had to wait 15 minutes before we could drink it. Their pastries looked amazing, so I probably should have rather had a pastry.
Anita Du Toit
Best. Cheesecake. Ever. They know their stuff when it comes to baking. Lovely to sit outside on a sunny day. Friendly service too, the owner seems to be hands on
Tanya Venter
Lovely little bakery tucked away in the heart of Plett. They make the best flapjacks on this earth! And they use the ice cream from the devine shop below them. Although, service my be a problem if you're an impatient Joburger like me!
Natasha Silva
Nice French-style bakery with the most delicious cakes. Perfect spot for afternoon treats!

The food is okay, but never blows me away. They seem to love their balsamic glazed caramelised onions which come with a few dishes, including their prego roll (which isn't actually a prego roll because it doesn't come with a spicy prego sauce) as well as their burgers. The thing is, the onions are just a tad overpowering.
