Review The Fat Fish - Plettenberg Bay

Food Expertq8
Amazing seafood platter so fresh and cooked to perfection the grilled fish was melting in my mouth and the calamari delicious with to butter sauce and shrimp and mussels also were tasty. The sirloin steak unfortunately wasn’t good very chewy and hard and the sauce not my liking tasted sour. The service was excellent the manager was very friendly and welcoming although it was very busy.

Highly recommend! Good view ! Especially bikers and travelers. Cold beer and warm atmosphere. Tasty food, sushi and salads. Price little bit high.

Wonderful restaurant! The food is incredible and the views are amazing. We had oysters and croquetes to start. Followed by the seafood platter for one, kingklip with fries and Tagliatelle with pesto. Everything was perfect!

Yum yum yum !!!’ A fantastic experience for the second time. This fish is literally the best we have had. We came back because 2.5years we had the best fish and today you didn’t let us down! Absolutely incredible! Excellent service to top it off. Thank you and keep it up. We look forward to Decembers visit.

Had Dinner with my Husband for a weekend away in Plett, all I can say is wow! Amazing flavors and great quality seafood. The Fresh Kingklip is a must! The Pistachio meringue Dessert was also top tier. Would definitely recommend and would visit again if we are in the area.
Dorea
Half Empty restaurant but we are told fully booked. Not a seat taken outside.
Alexia Doeg
Vibe was amazing. The sushi was good, just not as good as the ocean basket in plett. Which is why I can’t rate it a 4 star. Seafood looked delicious though!
Ling
The food is amazing with great flavours, I would recommend the hake and calamari and or the seafood fettuccini.. hospitality is good... we didn’t make a booking but luckily there is still space on the veranda, plus side is that it is covered.

Recently visited the Fat Fish for dinner whilst on holiday. We didn't have a reservation, but the hostess politely said she could assist us but we have two hours to have dinner. We were satisfied with this arrangement and even though we thought it was going to be a rushed meal, it was not. We had starters as well as mains with much ease and plenty of time to kill in between. Since we were visiting, we decided to try somewhere else for dessert.

Starters we had the white bait accompanied by black garlic aioli and the cajun baby squid. The squid was absolutely delish. My son opted for a beef burger, daughter had the kids fish and rice. Hubby opted for the prawns (best ever) and I took the recommended dish - Parmesan crumbed kingklip with smoked chilli butter. We were not disappointed.

Our waiter was very pleasant and friendly. Will definitely visit again when in Plet. View is awesome from the outside deck or even take a seat inside by the window. Don't forget to try out their different gins...you wont be disappointed.

Fish and chips was amazing! Good old school fish and chips :)
Really awesome spot with incredible food and great service. The Chilli Chocolate mousse was out of this world. Often full and requires booking except for the outside area where you can just pitch up and hope there is a spot available.
Andrew Carlin
Always consistently great food especially the fish dishes and satisfactory service . Always busy and often difficult to get a reservation. My favorite in Plett.
Michelle
Was here with friends , it was a quiet day . Service was fast and the waiter was friendly . Starters was great. The main was a let down ..... a main being Close to 200 you expect the whole fillet of 200 g at least . I had the mango curry and I found 3 small offcuts in my curry ...... what a disappointment . Better luck next time . It was delicious just not up to standard with the prices .

The parmesan kingklip dish was absolutely sensationally delicious, hands down best kingklip dish i've had in Plett. Definitely worth a try if you're here.
Eat Like A King
One of my favourite experiences this holiday. We arrived at 8 and sat down half an hour later but it was so worth the wait. The menu is interesting, not just your average fish & chips. Great variety of craft gins & wines 🍷. I had the platter for 1, which is probably the best seafood platter I’ve ever had. The prawns 🦐 were big & plump, mussels in tomato curry sauce and the crispy calamari were highlights. My husband had a delicious rump with mushroom sauce, which was great too.

The service staff and managers/hostesses were excellent! Attentive, intentional and helpful - despite being crazy busy. Huge compliments to the chef and kitchen team as well, I couldn’t fault the food in anyway!
Irishman
Definitely above average restaurant in terms of service and food. The service is consistent and friendly, the food is very tasty from the main menu items to the sushi options. One of my picks in Plett to come here for a good meal and service.

Excellent location with beautiful sea views. We went for an early lunch and the restaurant was not busy. The service was excellent. The waiter was friendly and attentive and knew the menu well and recommended food and wine. The seafood is excellent. My daughter ordered steak which was not great. The desert menu looks amazing and we will definitely try it next time.
Faye Eshraghi
Lovely meal. What was very impressive was the service. The restaurant was packed yet we were served quickly, the food arrive shortly after we placed or order. We were amazed at the level of service in this very busy setting.
Lucy
Service was great and the staff were very friendly. Views are also beautiful. However, the food was average and expensive. For the price we paid I was very disappointed with the food.

Fat fish was highly recommended so we had to give it a try. Almost didn't get a chance as they're always fully booked! So make sure you give them a call at least 2 days before you plan to go. I had the mussels- they were amazing! Not your average white wine and cream sauce. They add leaks which just makes is so much nicer! It's not overpriced, most of the places in and around Plettenbergbay have the same prices. Would definitely give it a try if you're in the mood for seafood. The menu is unique and the service is good.

The Fat Fish

We went there on Tuesday night after being recommended. My husband and I decided to try this restaurant. We were told that we need to have a booking to get in. Our hotel made a booking for us for 8 pm. When we arrived there we were told that our table was still busy and we must wait at the bar. Eventually we got seated at 9 pm. We wanted to leave but it was too late to go elsewhere.

Waiters and managers apologized. My husband ordered the battered hake and chips and I ordered the grilled hake with calamari. When the food arrived I noticed that they made a mistake with my order. They had only brought me calamari. I told the waiter that they had made a mistake with my order. He took away the calamari and I had to wait again for my food.

Eventually my food came. They brought me the tiniest portion of calamari which most of it was fried crumbs, and the tiniest piece of hake which tasted awful. It was totally tasteless, cold and bland and still frozen in the middle. At that time I was so hungry that I ate it anyway.

You have a beautiful location and décor, but your service and your food has a lot to desire. Most definitely you won’t see me again and I won’t recommend to anyone, and on top of it your prices are a rip off.

Opposite central beach, nice contemporary decor and ambiance. Staff are friendly and was recommended the Parmesan crumbed kingklip with smoked chili butter, very good. The tapas menu looks quite delicious and will definitely come back to try it

Really bad service and limited menu. Wine list is terrible. Waiter rushed us in and was trying to turn the table as soon as possible. From arrival to mains being served took 15min. Food was bland and over priced. The only upside was the view.
Jaryd Kay
Venue is great, on the beach and is a good balance of modern and rustic. The service was attentive, professional and engaged. Food was marvellous, freshest and best fish and chips hands down. Portion sizes are very reasonable. Desert is a must! Slightly overpriced but I'd still return.
Merven Paliam மெர்வென்
Slightly pricey but service and the food were really good. Great location with seaviews. The staff are attentive and the food with its spot on flavors are perfectly plated..

Dinner with the boss.Best seafood in Plett. Great atmosphere and the service is good. Would recommend to anyone who wants a geniune taste of what the ocean has to offer.
The Foodie Corner
We ate here one night during our stay in Plettenberg on recommendation of a friend. And I must say, we were not disappointed!

I was looking forward to trying this restaurant purely because I saw that they offer tapas. And being a fan of the whole "share your food with those around you" type of dining, I was happy to discover that they offered quite a large tapas menu. And sushi! So we decided to order 5 tapas to share, as well as 2 portions of salmon roses, just to give their sushi a try as well.

The tapas were good, with my favorite being the chicken dumplings - they were very spicy, but so saucy and delicious. And very densely packed with meat, much to my meat-loving partner's joy. We also enjoyed the arancini, which were quite cheesy and not the traditional risotto balls I'm use to, but still good. The potatoe bites were also delicious. Both came with a dipping sauce that worked very well with it. I wasn't too impressed with the snoek samosas, as they were too salty and the dipping sauce had a sort of porridgy consistency that tasted like nothing and didn't work well with the fish. The tempura prawns were also delicious and not overly oily.

We also enjoyed the salmon roses, so much so that my better half decided to order a portion of california rolls for himself. Unfortunately, they were a bit dry, so he was left feeling a bit disappointed with their sushi.

We shared desserts of peppermint crisp cheesecake and white chocolate chip brownie. The brownie was very, very tiny and any normal person would finish it in about 3 bites. So it's ideal for if you're not very hungry, but would like something sweet to end off the night. The cheesecake was hands down the winner - delicious, satisfying and refreshing, I'd recommend you try it!

What stood out for me was the quality of food they managed to turn out in such a short space of time - our food arrived in less than 10 minutes. I'd definitely return, perhaps to try their main menu items next time. But I enjoyed the tapas so much, I'll probably end up begging my better half to share with me again!

Menu is great, with a good wine list. Had a starter and a main and both were delicious.

Service was good as well even though the restaurant was packed.

Would highly recommend the Fat Fish.

Consistent Casual Dining
The Good:
Food tastes fresh
Consistent
Food is tasty as far as casual dining is concerned

The Bad:
Service needs to be more staffed
(Due to seasonality I can understand why they are understaffed management must still find a solution though)

Food ordered:
1st Visit
Fried Hake and chips
Well battered and fried hake just as it should be, Enough said

2nd Visit
Falafel balls
The falafel balls were a tad undercooked but still tasty and complemented by the Hummus
The Hummus consistency was off as it was too liquid. It was still taste was still there

Salmon Hand Roll
Fresh and tasty
Sushi rice was well prepared
Sushi should be served fresh to avoid the seaweed wrapper from becoming Chewy
Unfortunately this was brought out with the rest of the food and the seaweed was a bit chewy from standing

Worth a visit
James Coetzee
Terrible service. Extremely over priced. Sushi was completely average. It felt like I was in a cheap diner being farmed through as quickly as possible.
James Marsh
Definitely one of our favourites in Plett! The food and service is consistent and good!! Best fresh prawns I have had in a long time! I would also recommend the calamari and hake. As well as the parmesan crusted hake. The wine list is great, with large variety and not too shabby prices! The food has variety for if you are not into your seafood! Also the restaurant has a great view over main beach, resulting in a satisfying meal and experience each time.

This place made a great stop after jumping off the Bloukrans Bridge. Really enjoyed the salad there and the Goujons were light and packed with flavour. Would most def go back the next time I'm there

Wide variety of fish dishes. The beautiful setting overlooking the ocean and Plett's landmark, Beacon island hotel, is an added bonus. Splendid experience!
Stuart
Ok I'll keep this short, sharp and sweet. If you're looking for stunningly delicious food at a reasonable rate you have to try the fat fish.
We had sesame calamari to start with a wasabi mayonnaise. Awesome. For mains we had the chilli infused kingklip. Out of this world. And to end it all a vodka cheese cake. The bill for the two of us - R757
James
Lovely Place at a nice location!

Had the line fish!!! Served probably the best cob I have ever had! Would recommend this to seafood lovers!!! Thanks fora great Lunch.

👍

Recommended this restaurant by our hotel and had other good reviews on here. The food was incredible, as were the cocktails. Best of all though was the service. It was a busy Friday evening but all the staff were happy and friendly. There was a musical set playing background music that wasn't too intrusive. Our server, Jeanne, was proactive and when we came to order was happy offering suggestion on our choices. Providing you are open to friendly, informed advice, this was perfect. She made recommendations and we happily obliged and were glad we did. The food was incredible and all her advice was justified! Fantastic place to eat, enjoy the atmosphere and interact with the staff.

The Fat Fish is a really nice venue with the perfect sea view of Plett and Beacon Isle. Add a cosy fire to a rainy day add some good food and service and you are set for a good experience.

They did not disappoint 😀😀

It's really worth a try.

What a Privilege!
This is truly the best of everything we have eaten. The sushi, oysters, fish and even the deserts which are often forgotten.

Tay
Absolutely DELICIOUS fish and chips. All the other food was really yummy and the service was excellent. Please open a branch in cape town!! I'll be back for sure
Tami Magnin
The food is super delicious. I would recommend that you call ahead an book a table, especially if you want a table next to the window. The portions are huge and the flavour combinations are classic. Well worth a visit. You won't be sorry. I had the hake and calamari while the kids polished off their fish burger and bacon and cheese linguine. Hubby had the fish and chips and said he enjoyed it. I had to stop the kids from licking their plates. The vodka cheesecake was sublime and the kids Nutella brownie with peanut butter ice cream was raved about.

We dined here on a Thursday evening, surprised to see it so full, but when we tasted our food we understood why. Our mains was simply phenomenal - we had the Parmesan crusted kingklip with chilli butter and I can confidently say it was the best fish I have ever tasted. Our waiter was very busy thus not very present but the staff were a good team and this resulted in us having two courses within 50min of arriving. Such a gem, hoping to see a branch in Cape Town SOON!

Beautifully located restaurant with a good ambience. I ordered the calamari crumbed with sesame seeds. It came appealingly presented with wasabi mayo, however, unfortunately, it was not just crumbed but also battered, so I sent it back. My husband enjoyed it though. I was super-impressed with the chef who managed to bring me the most beautifully cooked hake within a matter of minutes so that I could finish eating with my husband. And the veg - perfectly fresh & crunchy!

Saturday evening and therefore very busy. Booked table one day in advance. Menu varied with plenty of options for everyone. On busy evening food took a bit long to arrive but was delicious. Good variety of wines to complement the food. A very good experience.

Excellet food; sushi and oysters fresh, great atmosphere; quick dinner turned into romantic date, great service, polite staff! Value for money.

The Fat Fish is such a treat! It's almost common sense to eat seafood when at the coast, and this spot never disappoints. I'm not usually a fan of 'menu-zines' or newspaper menu's, but theirs works and just adds to their atmosphere. Its not overly cluttered or dirty like what I've experienced at other spots, and it has some puzzles you can fill in while you take in the scenery and coastal air.

Their menu has something for everyone, and some really lovely choices. They regularly have specials on, which just adds to their already reasonable prices.

I'm a creature of habit at this spot as I originally settled for their traditional "fat fish and chips", and loved it! The batter was just melt in your mouth awesomeness and not to be missed.

Aside from a great spot with a great view and lovely food, the staff are really attentive and efficient. Be sure to get a seat on the deck, or near the window!

Will always come back, again and again.

We have a lovely lunch there. The sauce of the calamari start with wasabi taste so good that we feel a little bit of disappointed when we find the same calamari in platter come with different sauce. Seats outdoors are so relax. I can't say I appreciate the view but I real enjoy the atmosphere there.
Pia
Spend a long evening here - everything was superb!!! The food was fantastic, the service was great and also the Cocktails were grand! We had the kudu carpaccio, the fish platter for 2 and as a dessert the cheese plate. We could not have made a better choice. We would definately come again, if we passed the city... :)

Amazing view, delicious tapas, and friendly service. Will definitely go back for the main menu, as we were quite in a hurry. Amazing decor as well.
Ryan Oberholzer
Service was amazing, the food was amazing and we really enjoyed the atmosphere. Will bring everyone for dinner next time we do a road trip up!
The Cape Town Glutton
We had a lovely dinner at the Fat Fish, with delicious cocktails and excellent service! With a window seat we had a great view of the ocean and we would definitely recommend this place if you're in the mood for some great fish and seafood

The Fat Fish is one of those restaurants that I go to whenever I am in Plett. It is always delicious and the service is always good, even when it's busy, like it was during the holidays. It is a bold statement but I would say that it serves the best fried hake that I have ever eaten. The fried calamari is my second favourite and is always tender and it is dusted in a very light batter so it tastes fresh and has a nice crunch. They always serve sushi and an array of meals, including non-seafood options. The service is fast and friendly and even when it is super busy, the wait for a table is not too long and even if you do have to wait, it is well worth it and this restaurant serves delicious food.
Lauren Julius
The service at Fat Fish is really good. We had the seafood curry and butter chicken curry and wow absolutely superb! Would highly recommend it
Emil Hickley
Had dinner at The Fat Fish. Their food presentation is really good. Excellent salads! Service is okay. Average fish and chips. Stale chocolate brownie :(
Henk Van Niekerk
Best dining in Plett. Kingklip was amazing. Service standard is faultless. sushi good. Definately recomendable. Efficient and fast service. ...............

The Fat Fish gets our vote as one of the best restaurants in Plett!

We decided to chance getting a table without a reservation. The staff were extremely friendly and accommodating; offering to bring us drinks while we waited outside for our table (about a 20 minute wait in peak season).

The menu was very well put together with current information of whats happening in and around town. There was a great selection of starters and mains - making choosing very difficult as everything sounded so delicious.

We highly recommend the Parmesan crusted kingklip with chili butter.

We definitely be back to try more off the menu!
Nic Hern
Just finished a fantastic lunch at The Fat Fish. The food was awesome, the service was great and views from the restaurant did not disappoint! The sushi was very fresh and tasted great, my only complaint was that it was a little on the small side 🍣 I wasn't a fan of the the fact you couldn't make a reservation or that there was no air conditioning! All in all it was a very pleasant experience 👍🏻
Erin Mullins
My family and I went to The Fat Fish on Tuesday 29 December and after a short wait in the queue to sit down in the outside area we were greeted by friendly staff.

The evening started out with orders from the tapas menu - the pork dumplings never fail to impress. The parmesan kingklip was cooked to absolute perfection.

The Fat Fish is a place with fantastic ambience with a fresh and youthful vibe.
Ryan Lapidus
Holidaying at the coast usually means slightly inferior service than what we are used to in Johannesburg, but NOT at the Fat fish. We all loved our meals and the waitresses were great. The black mushroom linguine and the Parmesan crusted kingklip stole the show. Definitely in the top 3 restaurants in beautified Plett.
Darryl
Amazing meal and attentive service. The sushi and calamari were fresh and delicious. Extensive wine list and beach views. A fantastic meal at one of the busiest and best run restaurants in Plett.
Linel Visser
Not a bad place to eat at but most definitely not the best. Our waitress was great though. Very little places you go to has service from beginning to end. The set is quite nice and the mood to. They can do so much more with the food though. To start with my pork dumplings was dry :-(
Ryan Goodman
This is without a doubt the best fish restaurant not just in Plett but the entire Western Cape. Chef Kirsty Sinclair is banging out chart topping hits like the parmesan crusted kinklip (to die for!) And buttered grilled prawns. The service is fast and efficient and the setting across from the Beacon Island is fantastic. I cannot wait to go back! Highly highly recommended!
Shirley B Hanson
The best restaurant in Plett, hands down! Stunning setting, fantastic service, excellent food and exceptional value for money. Highly recommended.
William Price
Excellent atmosphere, food and service right on the beachfront in Plettenberg Bay.
Their specials are great tasting dishes that are reasonably priced.
Julia Pyle
The food is super delicious here ! Great recommendation by the waitress and the kiddies grilled hake is really awesome! We had the seafood platter to share, wow wow wow !!!
Stacey Kavnat
My husband and I went here for dinner. We were welcomed by a very friendly manager who showed us to our table. The a very friendly waitress then came to take our order. My husband ordered a seafood curry and I ordered a steak. The curry was very aromatic and absolutely delicious. I dont normally eat curry but I couldn't get enough of the sauce.

The steak was absolutely amazing. Soft, juicy and tender.

Highly recommend this restaurant
Chad Mayhew
Came on a very busy night, was greeted at the door with a smile and shown to our table. Our waiter was friendly and very informative with answering all our questions. They cater for the kiddos, and is a nice evening out
Lynette Candice Kies
A great dining experience with excellent service. The food was delicious and beautifully presented. I would recommend having the mussels in a creamy leek sauce on your next visit, simply superb!
Lauras World
The Fat Fish is one of those places with a unique set-up and I was told that it is impossible over the Christmas/New Years season to get a table inside for dinner. We popped in for a snack and some cocktails one Saturday afternoon. I chose some the Haloumi & Black Forest ham, Pork dumplings served in miso spoons, and we were not disappointed! I will definitely be back!
Luke Penney
Very friendly staff, impressive starters and although sushi rice very moist, was still enjoyably fresh! Cocktails were well presented, especially mojito's with well minted taste.
Peter-John Bull
I would recomend the Excellent platter for two. The mussels in a creamy leak sauce were to die for! Lovely portions and rich butter sauces. The Bloody Mary was not so good. It was to salty with no richness of tomato shining through. I still give The Fat Fish a thumbs up for divinely cooked food and sharp service.
