An unforgettable experience..... From the wine to the gastronomic food to the majestic views of a sunset over table mountain! Not even the pictures does this little piece of heaven justice!! Well worth it! Will definitely come again! Cherise (our waitress) was amazing, serving the wine with pride and passion. Knows the menu so well and made the whole experience just further amazing. Thank you for knocking our socks off!!!!
Well worth the drive from St.Rand (). The view is great and the food was awesome. 3 course meal of exceptional quality. Had the langoustine starter, fillet main and chocolate dessert. Sounds simple, but definitely fine dining. The amuse-bouche was a special treat - lovely.
One of the best tastings we have had so far! Tristan is extremely knowledgeable and has such a good way of explaining everything. Bonus point- the wines are delicious.
I have to comment on the excellent service we received from Ryan. He served us both times that my hubby and I went there and on both occasions he was just awesome. Because of the wonderful unique service from Ryan we signed up for the membership. I will recommend De Grendel wine estate to everyone who enjoys wine. Service 10/10 and the view is breathtaking. Well done on your excellent customer service Ryan. We appreciate it.
Everything was perfect. Amazing food. Amazing wine. Amazing view. I dont know why you guys are not in the top 30 restaurants. What a treat...
Amazing fine dining experience! 3 course meal perfectly paired with great wines. Errin was the best host for the evening - professional yet friendly and welcoming. Gorgeous view of table mountain & loved the simple, yet classic table decor. Thanks. We will be back!
We enjoyed a fantastic wine tasting experience on Saturday and were served by a really nice Argentinian gentleman (sorry I forgot his name). The views are amazing & the wine superb.
The service and the excellent staff. The food was just amazing we will definitely recommend this beautiful estate.
It was our first visit yesterday for Seasons of Sauvignon. Definitely won't be our last . Such a beautiful place with stunning views and really friendly staff.... oh yes and excellent wine 🍷 too!
Exceptional in every way. Services first class. Food of true international standards & the view spectacular. My go to place for very special occasions
Wow wow wow..... Amazing wine... amazing food... amazing service.... amazing friends.... was just amazing!!!
What a great restaurant, what a great hospitality! We met The winemaker himself: Charles Hopkins. Hé is all about passion and making the best! A place to have been. Hier moet je naartoe!
This place is something else. Great food and wine. Service is incredible.
Affordable tasting selection for such high quality of wines with amazing views and exceptional service. We absolutley love this place and come visit every time we are in the area. Resturant menu is also very impressive but overpriced and usually a bit crowded. Great if you coming as a crowd but not ideal for date night. Rather spoil your partner to the wine tasting options with a gourmet platter side.
De Grendel has one of the best views. Loved the Platter and Wine as well. Good experience
I never knew this restaurant was nestled in the city. What a pleasant surprise. We were a party of 5 for lunch. We were seated quickly and our table was right beside the door. I loved the fact that you could see the processing part for the wines as you go down the ramp to the restaurant. I was totally entranced by the place already.
The five of us all decided to do the 5-course tasting Spring Lunch Tasting Menu. We began with the bread service of Yogurt and Muesli loaf with Jersey butter. The taste was beautiful. The butter was smooth. What a perfect way to begin. We followed this up with 2-Namibian Oysters (curried carrot foam, cumin, feta, cashew & dukkha). I've never had any type of oysters before. I was prepared for the worst but pleasantly surprised but I'm convinced it's a cultivated taste.
You could choose the next course. I choose Plum tomato, heirloom tomato, Huegenot, cucumber, celery, daikon, and basil. It was refreshing and provided a lift to the palette with the lushness of the various tomatoes, the clean celery, and the daikon to finish it off. I loved it. The size of the portion was absolutely perfect. The gentleman chose the Springbok loin, celeriac, radicchio, courgette, cherry, 5 spice Au jus. From their cleaned plates, they enjoyed it.
My next course was Linefish, baby leeks, turnips, wild rice, cauliflower, chorizo, calamari, Cape Malay curry. What a delight! The fish was cooked to perfection, with large flakes of the fish coming apart as you put your fork to it. it was a delicate dish. From there, we finished off with our dessert. I chose the Pumpkin cake, ginger, pecan nut, orange, caramel, shortbread, cinnamon ice-cream. It was not a sweet dessert. The presentation of each course was done in an artful way with each component lending aid to the flavors around it.
We wanted to have lunch and then do a tasting, but once seated in the restaurant we realized it was an option between either a set 2 or 3 course lunch. No 'normal' menu. Neither of us wanted to do so as we had a late breakfast and couldn't manage more than one course.
So off to the wine tasting area. And thankfully they offer platters. Our server Darrin was excellent, the wines sublime and the platters exactly what we needed.
Shout out to the MCC brut, sauvignon blanc. Just beautiful.
Exceptional venue, beautifully decorated with an amazing view of Table Mountain. We had the lamb neck which was so tender, it seemed to melt in your mouth. It was paired with a refreshing coriander yoghurt and pureed dates - you wouldn’t think lamb and date would go well but wow, the date added a beautiful sweetness which amped up the taste ten fold. I did however find that the fried flour (chickpea?) ball was dry and needed salt. Perhaps a plain old potato croquette would have been better. We then had the Valrhona Aero dessert. The mousse was light and airy with a nice cold parfait. The lime in the parfait that was topped with popping candy cut through the somewhat dense dark choc cake. Overall the dessert was a nice mix of textures and flavours. Presentation of all our dishes was superb. As always, service at fine dining establishments are professional but as the evening got busier, there was a small but noticeable delay in attention from our waitress. The room may seem small however tables are nicely spaced to allow some privacy. I think De Grendel deserves its 5 stars and should be your next choice if you’re looking for a reason to celebrate.
Duck starter was great, except the skin was not crispy. Lamb neck was delicious but the steak was something else, probably the best I've had. Chocolate dessert was quite good and the wine pairing, the Late Harvest, was perhaps the tastiest dessert wine I've come across. Oysters were fresh and tasty. Service was very good.
Recently I celebrated my 30th birthday at De Grendel Wine Estate. As a customer service manager myself, I tend to be rather critical. However, I found it practically impossible to provide any negative commentary.
The food was "out of this world". Everything from the bread service, the sweet potato Amuse Bouche, the Char Sui Pork Belly and Tuna Tataki starters, the Beef Fillet and Lamb Neck mains, the phenomenal Valrhona Aero dessert (selected by all the guests!), the after dessert cappuccinos, to the light and fresh De Grendel Rosè (a few bottles later), was perfect! With a table filled with fussy eaters, one should find a few dissatisfied murmurs, however not one guest raised an expression of dissatisfaction. The food was cooked to perfection and the portions more than generous.
The service was impeccable. The employees are friendly and highly professional. Special mention to Wesley for taking care of my guests and ensuring they are comfortble, engaged and entertained - they thoroughly enjoyed all the anecdotes. You helped make my birthday celebration an unforgetable one for all present. In addition, the three courses were perfectly timed, and the additional Happy Birthday surprise dessert from De Grendel was a great ending to a perfect evening.
The views left us breathless and reminded us all how fortunate we are to call Cape Town home.
As mentioned at the start of my review though, I found it practically impossible to provide negative commentary. The only call out would be the Aircon splashing water on one of my guests throughout the night. But honestly, sometimes we all need a bit of cooling down. 😉
What a spectacular experience. Thanks, De Grendel! As the terminator said - I'll (no we'll) be back!
1. De Grendel wine estate
2. Not halaal.
3. Price: 2 course menu :R 390 or 3 course menu at R425
4. Taste: True fine dining experience.I had pork belly as a starter. The crispy skin was so yummo. The pork crackling on my plate was a taste of heaven. I had the beef fillet cooked medium rare as a main and it was cooked to perfection. The beef cheek that accompanied it fell apart because it was that soft! I would have loved it for a Sunday lunch.
5. Quality: excellent
6. Service :Top Class waiters and the waiting time was on point.
7. Ambience: Warm atmosphere. Great for a date or relaxing dinner with friends or your folks. They have amazing views so try going for lunch on a summer`s day so that you can sit outside.
8. Will I return : indeed.
9. Waiting time for food : For top quality food, good.
10. Overall I'm very happy, I really enjoyed my meal.
I have waited a week to make sure this is not cognitive bias.
This is a beautiful place. We went there in the evening. The drive from the main gate to the restaurant is long, but filled with mystery for a first time visitor - with lane lights and direction arrows.
We were welcomed well and the aura felt stunning. This was the best place to have a lovely intimate dinner. We were sitted well and got the most prepared waiter there is - Luke, good job.
The food was amazing. Ah, the presentation of the bread-service was top-draw stuff. What a selection of breads, the best wine - I mean, what do you expect with a restaurant literally situated above the cellar - barrels lined up maturing wine on site.
My first time visits usually target flagship everything, so I go with what the restaurant think they do best. And so, I went with quite a few of their signature dishes.
There are set menus but it won't feel like so on the food side of things because the selection is huge. This makes the base pricing fixed for what I'll call even an impressive 2 course meal.
This place is a clear favorite for fine-dining in Cape Town. We had a lovely evening.
Dave, Eric, Bev and I went for dinner last month at De Grendel Restaurant. Situated at the top of Tygerberg Hill, this farm offers spectacular views. Sadly for us, we were unable to see the bay, or Table Mountain, due to the weather. The menu is based on locally sourced ingredients and changes according to availability. I love that they make use of produce from the farm, including their own honey and butter from their dairy herd. Guinea fowl, pasture-raised beef and lamb and the organic vegetables all come from the 330 hectares De Grendal covers.
What an amazing experience 💯
The food was presented like art on a plate. The flavors, textures and vibrance of each dish was salavating!
I especially enjoyed the scallops as they were cooked to perfection 💯
Another highlight was my beef fillet, which again, was cooked to perfection.
I would recommend this to anyone who considers themselves a foodie!
Waiter was friendly and attentive.
Ambience was amazing and decor just as stunning.
One of the best foodie I've had, would definitely come back during the day to experience the amazing views this place has to offer.
Excellent venue, beautiful scenic view, great ambience and service, the food was very good as well as the De Grendel wines. Very good restaurant which I recommend.
Being 'the foodie' in the office, I chose De Grendel as the venue for my small companies end of year function. Needless to say my colleagues were all extremely happy with me.
Absolute perfection, from the starters to mains, all the lovely little pallette cleansers they give you in between meals, and the wine of course, was absolutely an unforgettable night. At under R400 for a 3 course meal plus all the in between goodies, there's nothing I would rather spend that money on. The wine is also not marked up which is great, as they are world class. Would highly recommend De Grendel.
Summer evenings are beautiful on the patio with spectacular sweeping views of the Cape - Table Mountain as a backdrop. We had the 3 course dinner - tuna tataki (excellent balance and freshness), and quail (delicious) to start, pork belly and seafood dishes (both superb) accompanied by a bottle of their fine Sauv blanc (Koetshuis - still fresh and grassy but not acidic) and a glass of merlot with the pork.
Service was attentive and efficient. We were able to quickly transition inside once the patio became a little chilly after sunset. Recommended.
So much more than a meal. The drive up to the restaurant through the Estate begins an experience to be remembered. An exotic looking goat that resembled a praline in giraffe skin starts the fascination and you know that this is going to be different. Next comes the view of Table Mountain in the sunset and the quiet serenity captivates your senses before you even get into the restaurant. Stylish, opulent and indulgent ... and we were led to our table by our waitress. King Protea's minimalistically on the tables illustrate the style and the open space. Behind a glass wall a group of professional gourmet tastemongers work avidly at stimulating our tastebuds. The pages of the menu are appended and the choices are endless. The flagship white wine De Grendel 'Koetshuis' Sauvignon Blanc was selected and was just the first of many. My choice of starter was a medium rare springbok medallion done to perfection and the fine delicate fibres of the meat were succulent and tender. Couldn't have asked for better. The accompanying flavours were clearly assembled with a lingering taste sensation in mind. The waitress was also so professional. She was knowledgeable and enlightened on all the dishes. As a main, I sampled the beef and was again so impressed. The stylishness of fine dining in its simplicity highlighted a flavor to savor. Each person aground the table was visibly impressed. The dessert menu also turned out to be just as impressive and before long the flavours were lingering in friendly conversation. A great way to spend an evening. Excellent value.
Difficult to find the exact words to describe a restaurant so incredible! We had the three course meal, but basically has 6 courses: muesli bread and potatoe/leak muffins, a special surprise from the chef before the starters, then the most amazing 3 courses, and finished with white chocolate and oats munchies with coffee! Wow....
Had Sunday lunch at this beautiful wine farm and it was a great fine dining experience! The springbok starter was PERFECT. The meat was perfectly tender and the smoky flavor combined perfectly with the sweetness of other components.
The lamb was not as tender but still well prepared. The vegetarian dishes were nice but the options on the set menus were very limited.
The Aero inspired dessert was interesting but was basically chocolate pieces with ice cream.
We had a bottle of their Sauvignon Blanc which was a lovely accompaniment to our meals.
My favorite part of this restaurant has to be the beautiful view of the vineyard and rolling hills beyond. Looking forward to returning to indulge in a wine tasting!
We had a fantastic dinner at this outstanding restaurant last week. We had a big group so had a set 3 course menu with a choice of 3 dishes per course. I had the BBQ springbok to start, beef fillet for mains and declined desert! But all the meals were, as expected, outstanding. The setting is fantastic with views over the wine fields and beyond. The service is always good and the wines amazing. Great evening and worth a revisit sometime soon.

Came for a family Sunday lunch. We have been here before for dinner and the food is consistently fantastic and the service is great. I can highly recommend the Restutant and we will be back. The waiter will give you their recommendations for the evening and they are are happy to explain the menu.
This restaurant is truly a gem! The location is beautiful and I was surprised by the view.
The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable about the food. I love when you go to a restaurant and the wait staff actually provide insightful recommendations.
The food was really good. The scallops were our favorite dish! Yum!!!
It's a great place. You can sit outside on the veranda from where you have an amazing view. Really good MCC and Wine. Furthermore cheese and charcuterie platters are available to elevate your already fantastic wine tasting experience.
At last I managed to get to enjoy the much talked about de Grendel.
Our reservation was at 20h00 so the spectacular view was somewhat lost although it must be amazing at lunchtime.
We decided on the 3 course menu at R385 per head. An absolute treasure trove of choices
Firstly the complimentary bread was to die for.
We had the scallops with white bean, parma ham, asparagus, leek, brioche, rice crackers.
Salmon with purple carrot, maple creme fraiche, broad bean pesto.
Beetroot ravioli, cirrus, polenta, smoked parmesan, olive and poppy seed.
The best started by far was the trio of oysters- lime ,rabasco ,Sauvignon blanc jelly, cucumber and sweet chilli Simply stunning
For mains we had Karoo lamb, organic pork belly and the wild mushroom risotto
All top notch.
The best for last - dessert was lime posset, smoked cinnamon anglaise and valrhona aero.
The wines were all de Grendel - Sauvignon blanc 2016 DG Shiraz 2014 and the best DG Shiraz 2015 and all ridiculously priced at R95/R145
With restaurants charging such exorbitant prices for wine these days this is a real bonus!
Service was outstanding- Young man Wesley was top notch.
The only minor downside was that our table was near a birthday party table of about 20 people, so we had to sit through several speeches and the accompanying noise. People get a private room please 🙈🙈🙈
Will be back
An amazing drive towards this splendour... It is a "lushy green" drive. Horses are gracefully and peacefully grazing as we approach the restaurant. It is indeed a warm and welcoming sight. The reception is also warm and inviting. It is evident that the staff is well trained. Their approach when serving clients is professional and poised. Over and above that they are well groomed. We are conflicted as where to sit. Inside is warm, homely and the décor is pleasing to the eye. Outside presents a freshness, I am not sure why exactly such freshness but I am sure it has something to do with the untrammelled views of table mountain; just as it appears on postcards. We sit outside, beautiful views and serenity. We ordered a bottle of De Grendel wine 2014 Shiraz. It is beautiful, silky wine the lingers on the palate. There is an intensity about it but it is pleasing to the taste buds.I choose Duck leg confit, duck breast, quail egg, crispy leek, potato, pear, port and sugar snap - This was a very creative dish with ingredient standing out yet subtle enough to allow integration of spices. It is an edgy dish. I love the pear and port combination: pleasing to my palate. I paired my dish with De Grendel Pinot noir. One, Michael Olivier (My favourite food writer) said " Pinot Noir is one of the most food oriented wines. I always think of Pinot Noir as a red wine trying to be a white wine". Well the wine complimented my dish perfectly. The serving plates are rustic and beautiful, they have a resemblance to my Grandmother's ones. I love them- nostalgia. My date had Pork belly, fillet, pumpkin, carrot, apple, cider, aubergine and beetroot - This dish is delightful and modern yet there is an element of comfort food in it. It is contemporary soul food.NB: Though satisfying, the portions are small. For dessert we shared coffee bavarois, cake crumble, nougat, meringue, ginger bread ice cream, pecan nuts - It was a smooth finish to a beautiful day. Just one spoon, melts one's heart. This was my second time and the experience was as beautiful as the last. Their menu changes frequently but I hope that the 2017 menu is as beautiful as the 2016 one.Relaxing environment accompanied by creative cuisine. It is a winner
Beautiful! Beautiful food, beautiful wine, beautiful restaurant, beautiful views, just beautiful!
Service is superb. Staff have great knowledge of what's going in the kitchen and provide great advice for pairing your wine and food. Highly recommended for a beautiful experience!
A fantastic spot view a great view.
We were celebrating our anniversary and loved how intimate the restaurant feels.
Our waitress was a delight and helped us a lot with wine recommendations
The food is really quite delightful, our favourite course were the starters. I had the scallops which were cooked to perfection and complemented by each comment on the plate.
My other half went for the salmon which was refreshing and full of flavour.
The portions are ample and by the end of the main we were stuffed but couldn't say no to a dessert.
Both were a fantastic combinations of crunch, smooth, chewy sweet and a little savoury.
I'd highly recommend De Grendel looking for something special but not over elaborate.
Ahhhh the crown jewel of Plattekloof. The scenic drive toward the restaurant brings an escapist feel of being on holiday, enjoying a well-deserved meal and sparing no expense. One is met with warm welcomes, courtesy and faultless five star service from beginning to end.
Our meal started off with the complimentary muesli bread and butter infused with maple syrup. It was so good we presumptuously requested a second serving, and the staff were happy to oblige.
Leanne and I shared the salmon starter, which is slightly cooked on the outside while leaving the inside with sushi-like freshness. Leanne then tucked into the Karoo Lamb Shoulder and I savoured each bite of the Organic Pork Belly.
Granted the portions are small, but the combination of rich flavours leaves the palate and stomach satisfied, which is why you’ll find no spices or condiments on the tables, and rightly so. Why desecrate a perfect meal with added salt or tomato sauce?
I wouldn’t recommend anything smaller than a three course meal.
Truly fantastic! Master chef stuff and very good sized portions - spot on! The risotto up there with best ever! Setting is to die for and service was just right - not in your face - but always there if needed.

Brilliant brilliant brilliant food.
Had an amazing lunch at De Grendel. I had the scallops as a starter which were delicious. The kudu and oysters were also extremely well received by our table.
On the recommendation of the waiter we all went with the lamb as a main course which was spectacular. Super tender and paired with a beautiful combination of flavours including a pepper hummus.
All the meals were beautifully presented and paired with excellent service. I'd highly recommended the champagne as well.
The only thing stopping me from giving the restaurant full marks was that there were quite a few flies around at the table at our table. A small fan probably woulda gotten rid of them but it didn't dampen a seriously amazing lunch.
Book there immediately!
Wine tasting with a fantastic view. Stumbled upon De Grendel on Zomato and immediately headed over there. Unfortunately the restaurant was fully booked due to the demand during the festive season. We ended up just partaking in the wine tasting which was really great. The combination of great tasting wines and scenic view of table mountain is just lovely whilst sitting out on their stoop. I was a little disappointed to find out that they no longer offer platters for the tasting which I was looking forward to after reading a few reviews. Nonetheless the very friendly and knowledgeable waiting staff made sure we were happy and comfortable. The highlight was the MCC brut which I absolutely loved and the whole experience is made worthwhile by simply getting to enjoy that view. We will be back for a proper dining experience.
You're feeling super lah-di-dah and have just won the lottery. I know the perfect restaurant to celebrate your good fortune. De Grendel !
It's the God damn best food south of the Sahara. Arranged in such artsy ways and bringing colourful play into each carefully curated plate, it's simply gorgeous to look at. And when you finally gather the guts to eat your artwork, it's like Jesus was resurrected on your tongue. 'Delicious' is a word, but I'd rather say a meal here is delicious squared... Or cubed even!
It's expensive as hell, so save up beforehand and make a booking well in advance. Apparently Plattekloof is full of posh ou tannies who love their regular tables at De Grendel.
The venue is beautiful, the decor is beautiful, the view is beautiful, the service is beautiful; all good and well. But, the reason you're not getting a 5 from me is because the atmosphere is somewhat stiff. I'd like to get a bit loosy goosy amidst all that fancy.
We recently celebrated my husband's 75th birthday with a family lunch at De Grendel. We were a party of 19 family members ranging in age from 75 to 4! Everyone was happy and well catered for. The food was delicious, the service patient, efficient and friendly and the wine as always was much appreciated. It was a pleasure dealing with Renate who managed to put everything into place exactly as we had planned it.
Thank you for a most enjoyable celebration. We will be back.
We waited months to finally get a booking for lunch at De Grendal and it was so worth it!
Although they have a small menu there were enough options for all of us at the table. Every course was incredible and the wine to accompany it was equally delicious. Add to that the view of Cape Town does not disappoint...!
Been at the restaurant for lunch. The service was excellent- i had the Mushroom risotto- A very rich but delicious meal and a ginormous portion! The restaurant is beautifully placed with magnificent views overlooking the meadow and fountain with vast graze lands on the horizon.
I have recently had the pleasure of dining at De Grendel's restaurant - it is a lovely space. The first thing that impressed me was the room temperature butter that was placed on the tables - its a small detail that many other restaurants forget. Our waitress took a while before coming to get our food orders and the water for the table could have been filled up at more regular intervals otherwise service was good. The food is excellent - not very adventurous but beautiful presented and balanced.
Beautiful setting and great service.
One person in our party lost their phone, and the staff were super helpful and went the extra mile. So glad that it's close to home and we can frequent there often.
Had an excellent celebratory dinner at De Grendel recently. The food's the absolute highlight - not the most adventurous or exotic but incredibly flavorful and homely at the same time. (Warning to the gents though - portions are not very big). A highlight was that the desserts were not very sweet, meaning an easy end to one of the most enjoyable dining experiences I've had in Cape Town. The service is excellent and the ambiance is the perfect mix of social and intimate. Their tasting courses, especially the curried butternut soup, will never be forgotten! Overall good value for money, I recommend highly and will definitely be back!
Breathtaking Views and an opulent tasting room with an enthusiastic and knowledgeable host, not to mention its only R50 for 5 tastings.
They were out of stock of their Riesling (one of my personal faves) so I had the MCC Brut instead which tasted like diamonds and the laughter of cherubs.
We had such a fantastic time at De Grendel, a last minute choice to end off our week. We only went for wine tasting and cheese board which were really fantastic but more so was the awesome staff that made the experience, Anzio was a true delight a final year wine student from the University of Stellenbosh, he really did himself and De Grendel proud! The new wine pairing was also a lot of fun, all in all a fantastic time. A stones throw out of town so really no excuse not make a trip there...
Fabulous setting. Food delishous and perfectly presented. Pity they rushed the meal without a gap between starters and mains. Even though we specifically asked them to delay the meal! Dissapointing offish attitude from our waitress who lacked knowedge of De Grendel wines and could have at least cracked a smile!
De Grendel is one of those hidden gems.
The wine is super and reasonably priced.
The restaurant has absolutely divine fine cuisine. In my opinion a TOP class restaurant with very knowledgeable waiters.
A big recommendation from me!!!!
Had the pleasure of eating here last night. Food was superb, staff were attentive and will informed. Had the salmon starter, line fish for mains and the malva pudding for dessert.
Incredible view and value-for-money wine tasting: R50 for 5 tasters!
Shared their cheese platter with a friend, which included a nice variety of cheeses, as well as fruit like pineapple, fig, and apple. The mini baguettes were amazing too! At R125 a platter, it may have been a little expensive though.
Service brings this place down. Waiters were pre-occupied and inattentive - we spotted ours on his phone!
Stunning, stunning, stunning. Insane views, great food , great selection of wines. Best for evening sundowners summer time with mates and good wine
Short and sweet review because I was not here for a long time. All you need to know is that the wine is out of this world, the scenery is amazing, and the service is great. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.

1st time I was here I arrived and left in a helicoper and the food did not impress me at all, however gave them another shot and wow amazing! Had a fantastic 3 course dinner with wine paired and watched the beautiful sunset. Can't wait to go back again! The staff were super friendly and attentive.
De Grendel Wine estate is the only estate in South Africa, with such a perfect view of Table Mountain. And above all, they serve great food to go with that stunning view.
They offer a good variety of wines, most award winning calibre. We went there for lunch and tried a starter and some mains. We had the Cured Salmon starter and Roast chicken Veloute. Both beautifully presented and super awesome flavours.
For mains we had the Beef Fillet and the Line fish of the day. Again I can't fault anything. I took some time to watch the chefs working and preparing dishes in the kitchen, and the work with utmost precision and care. All very professional and friendly. they certainly know their job.
I will gladly return. De Gerndel is the perfect setting for a romantic dinner or corporate lunch anytime of the year.
We went here for my mom's 50th birthday and I was so impressed! The only negative comment is that I was slightly disappointed with the view this time of the year, but that was forgotten very quickly. The building and restaurant itself is beautiful and very tastefully decorated. The service is incredible and the staff are extremely well trained. The food is interesting and different and out of this world delicious! Each plate arriving at the table is a work of art and an experiment of flavours. I would recommend the salmon starter and the fondant for dessert. As far as mains go it's very difficult to choose as they're all pretty great. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone and everyone
Located on a stunning estate with a spectacular view of Table Mountain, De Grendel really does take dining with a view to a new level!
We started off the evening with a tasting of their flagship wines. It was a beautiful setting on their patio, overlooking the dam and enjoying the late afternoon sun. The person who helped us was friendly and willing to answer questions we had. They do also offer platters with their wine tastings, but we decided to save our appetites for dinner.
After the tasting, it was off to our 3 course dinner. Tip - make sure you book in advance! We arrived at 7 and within half an hour the restaurant was packed! Personally, I found it a bit noisy and it would've been nice to have some background music. But on the plus side, our waitress was friendly and took good care of us.
We started with complimentary bread, which you could taste was fresh from the oven and had the loveliest crispy crust. We were also given a complimentary amuse bouche of beef carpaccio, which was nice and soft, and not too overwhelming.
For starters, we ordered the scallops and the prawns. The prawns were well cooked and served with an array of sauces and salads, but I thought the portion size was a bit large for a starter. The scallops were the winners (I'd say the dish of the night!). Absolutely delicious and well worth the extra charge!
Mains consisted of the beef fillet and linefish (yellowtail). I loved the risotto that came with the linefish, as well as the lemony sauce. The fish itself had a nice crispy skin, but the actual meat was a bit too dry. The fillet came in a generous portion and all the accompaniments were delicious and worked perfectly with the meat. I'm not a huge red meat fan, but it seemed alright to me. Perhaps a bit on the dry side.
For dessert, we had the chocolate fondant and the apple crumble. You just can't go wrong with a chocolate fondant - rich, warm, oozing chocolatey goodness... Need I say more? The crumble was also interesting - deconstructed and served warm. I loved the ginger ice cream it came with!
Overall, a lovely experience and well worth it! Although it lacked just that little bit extra to make it a top restaurant, it was still a treat to dine there and I thoroughly enjoyed it!
The view is unmistakeably one of the best in Cape Town. And the huge open spaces and dam around the restaurant give it a serene ambience. Starters were crab and tom yum which had a deep flavour, and the salmon dish. I was a little disappointed with the salmon which failed to tickle the taste buds. Mains were much more enjoyable. Tender duck with a crispy skin and a beautifully prepared beef fillet with a range of tasty accompaniments. A lovely waitress was on hand to tend to our needs.
Went to this wine farm and restaurant for lunch after hearing great reviews and wow, what an experience. The location is just unbelievable with unlimited views of Table Mountain. The staff were extra friendly and helpful and informative and the setting inside was fresh and friendly, yet cosy. We were seated next to the kitchen, shielded only by huge glass windows so we could see what was being prepared and how it was done - a very interesting experience- but impressive. We ordered the organic braised Lamb Shoulder, the Pork Belly, the Wild Mushroom risotto and the Line Fish of the day, Yellowtail. It was outstanding both in presentation and flavor, with special mention of the lamb and the risotto. We just could not get enough. They obviously sell their own wine range and the prices are exceptionally reasonable - we had the Sauvignon Blanc and it was really good. Overall I am impressed and can recommend this to anybody.
This restaurant has the most beautiful sunset view, with views of Table Mountain as well. We had the lamb shoulder which was excellent and the presentation something to wonder over how they did it. The desserts is a definite and the deconstructed apple pie was very delicious and different. The fondant was different than other restaurants serve and I will recommend trying it. The De Grendel wine is reasonable priced and you would like to purchase some to take home.
My second 5 out of 5. As they say "Happy Wife, Happy Life". What an agreeable experience De Grendal puts together for their guests. Based in the Plattekloof Hills with a stunning view of Cape Town and Table mountain, I was treated to an incredible anniversary surprise meal when my wife decided to take me to dinner. An enjoyable drive up the mountain road and upon arrival a panoramic view of the lights over Cape Town. Almost an adventure in itself, with a fairy-tale lightshow at the end.Upon arrival we were seated promptly by a very efficient and friendly waitron whose class and eloquence throughout the evening was truly appreciated. Comfortable chairs, table and décor with a glass fronted kitchen made the experience of dining both interesting, enjoyable and exuded a warm atmosphere. Tables are spaced nicely so that you have your own private culinary experience and easy conversation. The initial place-setting was also fantastic as the items on the table had been hand crafted by a ceramist for the restaurant - a different echelon of culinary experience awaited us.The true nature of a restaurant is their food and this was not a disappointing experience. Our taste-buds welcomed by a small hors d'oeuvre pate from the chef as a subtle "welcome to palate heaven" started our evening. Savouring the delectable morsel, our waitron unlocked a bottle of their delicious sauvignon blanc and we ordered our set menu starters.Starters arrived with my wife enjoying the highly palatable cured impala. A fantastic dish with great balance and colour - vibrant, well plated and delightful taste sensation. I ordered a little more severe and went with the scallop. Colour-wise the dish arrived a little drab for my liking - overtones of orange with a pink carnation to liven it up. Quite frankly I despise carnations- always thinking of them as "funeral flowers". A beautiful plate in it's own right, but should have been a little more lively with a contrasting colour to break the look, but when I got past the aesthetics of the plating and took the first mouthful I believe the heaven's rang with song. Mind-blowingly good and well worth the R20 surcharge.Main course consisted of the Duck Leg Confit for my better half and I thoroughly enjoyed the most perfect beef fillet to date - the babaganoush being arranged in a heart pattern with the beef fillet - magic! No complaints, not one and extremely satisfying in portion size, plating and taste. Compliments to the Chefs - brilliant. We ended off the evening with a sweet tooth and I sampled the baked farm yoghurt with elderberry- a unique and pleasurable sweet course. My wife enjoying the apple, cranberry, salted caramel and wafer-thin brandy snap "sail" in her dessert. Full marks again. We completed a magic evening with a small "Happy Anniversary" from the restaurant - an unexpected and lovely touch to end with the delicious espresso's.All in all - an absolute touch of class, brilliant service, delicious food and fantastic value for fine dining. Thank you.

I must admit I was apprehensive before going to De Grendel--the prices that are often attached to 'nouvelle cuisine' dining are usually enough to put me off. However, it was a fantastic experience from beginning to end, and, dare I say, worth every cent.
From the set menu options, I selected the cured salmon starter, roast lamb main, and dulche de leche fondant dessert. The fresh flavour combinations of the starter were absolutely phenomenal and well balanced, the lamb was richly spiced and pull-apart tender, and the dessert was decadent without being overbearing or heavy. The MCCs and red wines that we tasted were exceptional as well.
In addition to the wonderful food and wine, we were also given fantastic and friendly service from beginning to end. I highly recommend giving De Grendel a try--you won't be disappointed.
Amazing. Excellent view, excellent service, excellent service. The squid, prawn and chorizo starter was delightful. The duck was prepared perfectly and full of flavor, but the dessert was a amazing end. The chocolate fondant with ice cream was totally totally perfect. My only complaint was I left a little hungry.
I hardly ever leave town for food but once in a while I do. I went to de Grendel for lunch and I absolutely loved it.
We got lost a couple of times and finally made it. Just as we were stepping out there was a couple arriving on a helicopter. Apparently it's just a couple of minutes from town. The restaurant has huge glass walls and with a great view of the lake.
It's definitely a place I would go to when celebrating something special. We chose a tasting menu and I didn't even bother looking at the menu. I just ate everything that was put in front on me. My friend loved the wine.
Excellent food with really good service and stunning views. The mushroom risotto was delicious. Would definitely go back. The prices are reasonable given the quality of the food and the ambiance.
We went there on Saturday evening amd what an awesome experience!!
We started off with some bubbles and then moved on to Shiraz 2006 vintage!!
The food was fresh and all the flavours came together beautifully. We enjoyed the wine so much that we ended up buying 2 bottles to take home!
The view is absolutel beautiful. The waiters are friendly and helpful great service!
Absolutely blown away by this estate and what they delivered today. Service was sharp and friendly with knowledge of their wines, menu and farm history. The food was impeccable and I cannot fault it. Portions were perfect and value for money was through the roof. A spot I will defiantly return to and let's not even go there about the magnificent table mountain views. 5 star👌🏼 oh and p.s we touched baby goats 😍
What an incredible place! Firstly, the views are absolutely breathtaking. You have the best of both worlds by looking over beautiful vineyards whilst also looking at Cape Town and Table Mountain.
Secondly, the staff are fantastic, efficient and friendly. They are very welcoming and make sure all your needs are met. They make food and wine suggestions that are appreciated.
To top it all off, the food and wine is magnificent. The scallop starter was an absolute taste sensation that had everyone at the table raving. All the mains ordered (lamb, beef fillet and duck) were unique in their taste and thoroughly enjoyed. The baked yogurt was a perfect end to an absolutely marvellous lunch.
I cannot wait to return.
This absolute gem never disappoints. We were back for the 5th time this year, but our first time during the day for a lunch menu!
The grounds are even more breath taking in the sunlight- the cold front bowing in didn't give us the clearest views- but this is all we could fault in the days visit.
As usual the service by the waitrons was superb, we got our water and yummy home made bread.
I chose the Rosé and hubby had the Pinot Gris- both amazing wines!
We then had the task our choosing our lunch. I decided on the shrimp and prawn starter with the pork belly main, hubby had the cured salmon starter and the roast duck main. The dishes were all absolutely incredible! The detail and attention that goes in to every single plate coming out of the kitchen does not go unnoticed.
Desserts were the Malva pudding for hubby and I had the sorbet which the chef was so kind as to switch out one of the sorbet flavours for me.
We needed our wonderful lunch with yummy coffees served with the famous De Grendel rocky road and biscotti.
Just love this perfect piece of paradise!BrandenReiny
Excellent amazing tasty friendly and awesome homely atmosphere. I have been here a few times and am never disappointed, the food is great, menu always changing and we keep going back for more.
There is a taste for everyone and whatever mood you are in they have something for you.
Fine dining at its best with good sized portions and the wine is top quality from the farm and very reasonably priced.
Absolutely brilliant food and the best view you could ask for.
Their Sunday lunch menu is excellent and offers choices for everyone.
Can't wait to go back
De Grendel is just beautiful. The views are amazing. The food is pretty, tasty and full of flavour. You can wine-taste, you can fine-dine and you can be sure that both will leave you happy and returning for more. The service is excellent and the food and wine combinations are spot on. Book in advance, bring your kids along and settle in for the afternoon.
Went for a wine tasting and cheese afternoon.
The wine tasting was just above average with okay service but an informative session. The cheese platter was outstanding and so was the view.
De Grendel is one on my favourite fine dining spots in Cape Town. With a beautiful view of Table Mountain and a extensive selection of wine you can't go wrong. They have a selection of two or three course meal. Every bite bursts with flavour leaving you excited for the next course!
Finally got to go here after a few attempts, a stunning view out to Table mountain on a clear day. Nice farm setting despite being less than 10 minutes from the suburbs. The service was prompt and professional and the food was absolutely excellent. The place can be quite busy so bookings are strongly advised. The wine (an estate pinotage) was ok but I have had better. Plenty of space for children to run amok outside and some farm animals to keep them occupied.... Will definitely be heading there again, just goes to show that you don't need to drive for 45 minutes out of Town to visit a quality estate....
Went with some old friends. Great wine tasting beforehand with very entertaining waitress. Very good wine list accompanied set menu. Waitress forgot to order one person's starter, which is unfortunately not acceptable at a venue of this kind, but she immedIately took personal responsibility and that is unusual too, so all good! Food was really good, although portions may actually be too big!
Absolutely amazing view, divine wine and a quality menu. Not a cheap thrill but considering the quality, spot on prices. Did I mention the wine?
Great wine and full of flavor food. Sometimes a bit rough around the edges but still a treat. The perfect spot for lunch enjoying the spectacular views.
You walk into a warm, cosy restaurant- friendly service and hearty menu (enough choice) and an excellent wine selection. Tip: with the generous portions, sharing amongst two is advised.
Another estate discovered close to the city! Beautiful views and the food is awesome! Definitely going back! Had the chefs come to our table to applaud them on their exquisite dishes and asked them to surprise us with dessert which of course they did not disappoint!
My favourite romantic restaurant in Cape Town! We had the opportunity to spend Valentines Day here and we could not have asked for a more special evening. We had a 5 course delicious meal that melted our taste buds. On arrival there was a rose on the table with a small bag of home made sweet goodies...how cute? Each meal was perfectly paired with my favourite wines and their was a talking point for each dish. Such as liquorice and salmon! They are most certainly exploring some interesting routes and we were very impressed.
I can gaurentee you that within the next year De Grendel will be in the Top 10 restaurants in South Africa. In terms of service, decorations, venue and views, food and wine they are literally 10 out of 10.
I will continue to go back monthly for a date night!
We spent an amazing afternoon at De Grendel. Started with a cellar tour hosted by Christelle van Niekerk, then sampled all of the estate wines at a tasting in the boardroom. Really really good stuff. I found some new favorites! The lunch was exceptional - delicious food beautifully presented. And the service was faultless. This was definitely one of my favorite meals for a long time. Will be back often!!!!!

What an absolute amazing and pleasurable experience! We started off with a cellar tour and wine tasting and then headed up to the restaurant. Because of the size of the group the chef chose the best 3 starters, mains and desserts. I had the fillet which was absolutely perfect! Hubby had the prawn starter and pork belly for mains. He was in heaven! To top it off we had wonderful wine and a stunning view! Definitely highly recommended for a visit
Great food, fantastic service and amazing view of Cape Town. Absolutely nothing to complain about.
With an amazing view over Table Mountain, this is a prime choice for a lunch spot. Why it is still on my to do list.
I have been here for dinner, and loved it! The service is great - fast service but they leave you alone to enjoy your dinner and company, but always close by if you need them. The menu changed since I have been but I had ostrich steak which was soft, tender and the combinations amazing! I was actually sad when I had to take my last bite!
And one of the added benefits of dining at the wine estate is that you can enjoy great wine at a reasonable price.
Fast and fantastic service, wonderful gourmet food with a spin of local. The dishes may cost a little more than the usual around Cape Town but from my experience it is worth it.
From the smile of the waitress' face, to the the spicy aroma trailing its way to your table, and best of all and most important, THE TASTE.
The first bite is only the beginning of a luxurious tasting heaven experience for the tongue. Not to forget that De Grendel Estate is a wine farm, designing their food to pair well with their wine. The service, the food, the affordable wine, the spectacular landscape (great conversation aspect for dates).
I recommend this restaurant to anybody looking for variety, fusion of European and South African cuisine and a beautiful view of Table Bay.
The most beautiful wine farm we have ever been to. The views of Table Mountain while enjoying a glass of wine is just breathtaking. We enjoyed a dinner with a wine pairing for my birthday and it was amazing. The food was absolutely on another level and the wines paired with it was just superb - this evening just made sure we never want to drink any other wine 😋
Really great restaurant. Already visitng for more than 10 years and never disappointing. Great wines, great view, great dishes and great staff. What else do you want?. Really recommendable!
Amazing lunch with fantastic views and very friendly staff. Can wholeheartedly recommend it for the food, but I'm certain it's the wine, which will attract the most.
Our first time here. What a lovely wine farm with awesome views towards Table Bay and Table Mountain. It was a very busy Thursday, so we excepted the slow service, but definitely needs to be looked at. Sat outside, no umbrellas on a hot day. Wines were amazing... the Noble Late Harvest was a winner. Did not eat as the courses are very expensive and do not give you a real choice of eating anything else. Well worth a visit though. 🍷🍷🍷
Had a wonderful experience at this wine estate. The food was delicious, the wine testing was a cherry on top. The views of the city and the mountain are majestic. The service from the staff was excellent. There is plenty of parking available. The toilets are clean. Everything ticked the boxes for me.
Had the most amazing fine dining dinner experience at the restaurant. The food was delicious. My steak was made to perfection and really went down well with the Rubaiyat red wine. Will definitely be visiting the restaurant again soon.
Fabulous meal, we were a big crowd. Lovely service and not being rushed to move from our table. Nicely spaced out tables and time sittings. Staff friendly.
Fine dining at its best. It's not a cheap round at R595 per person for 3 courses, but it's worth the spoil!
Service, ambience, and food were of the highest quality.
Had an awesome day with my team in the tasting lounge. We were a bigger group so had exclusive use of the tasting lounge which was awesome. Snacks are simple but good and tastings options were good.
With not much time to spare, we popped in for a quick weekday afternoon wine tasting. Firstly, the view is spectacular. It's such a unique view of Table Mountain and Cape Town.
All 6 of the wines tasted were superb. 👌
Our server was professional, polite, and knowledgeable.
We look forward to our next visit!
