Review Curry And Craft - Observatory

Brent Currin
This cosy little spot is tucked away just off Lower Main Road, with its abundant eateries, and makes a real mean curry. I’ve tried the unique butter chickpea roti pizza and the vegetarian thali plate which were both great. Apparently the Durban lamb curry is a winner too. Highly recommended 👌

We go to Curry and Craft often. They have the perfect combos of craft beer and delicious curry. Their bunny chows are a must have and so is their Thali Great value for money too

The flavor of the food was very good. Portion was too small. However the ambience, concept and setup is great. Good place for drink during happy hour, 4-7.

Really awesome, lamb bunny chow. Food was amazing and the waitress was really friendly and full of smiles. Will be back soon

Delicious curry! Great service and ambiance. I'll be back.

Food was good. We were in a hurry. Wish we could of stayed longer. Gentleman that served us was very kind.

I tend to never go out for curry. But oh boy, this place has amazing curry and samosas. Best is that all this amazing food is paired with craft beer. They have various specials. Including drink specials and the service is amazing as well! You can see a bunch of happy faces as everyone enjoyed their meal. A must go for anyone close to Obs.

I have ordered from them many times. The Durban lamb curry with a garlic roti is the most amazing meal. Authentic tasty food. Recommended for all. Best curry I've found in CT so far. Worth ever penny.

Great little place. The on tap weiss was lovely. Had the lamb curry which was lovely although a bit spicy(I find sweet chilli sauce spicy so take that with a grain of salt) but it was very nice and the lamb was very soft and well cooked. Would be nice to maybe have a little bit more potato rather than one wedge too,but if you want more food get the larger portion. Otherwise was a lovely place and nice and clean and modern.

Great service and delicious curry. Samoosas, lamb and butter chicken curry all super tasty and you can ask for strength heat. Our waitress was super attentive and rest of staff made us feel very welcome. Owner came to check that we were happy with food.

Enjoyed a very pleasant evening with four friends at C&C. The service was friendly and the food was really tasty! I was worried how hot the lamb curry in my bunny-chow would be ... and really appreciated that the chef came out with a taster of the sauce to let me check if it was satisfactorily mild for my taste! Two of the group enjoyed their Butter Chicken with a roti while the other ordered a "Thali plate" for only R85 which gave him a taster of everything - it was a winner!! This is a place I'll be visiting again!

Amazing food! Great service and a a nice chilled environment!

Chickpea curry. Ask for it as a bunny chow. 10/10. They really should add it on the menu for the veggies. Incredible.

Great lunch venue. Excellent food, huge portions, and good prices. Even cheaper for lunch. The Bunny Chows and Curries are their stars. Cosy and spacious seating area so a good place to have lunch time meetups.

Best kept secret in OBZ. i love the lunch special. Bunny Chows are amazing. Perfect heat and size. Such friendly staff too. Keep up the great work. Wish you were open on a Sunday
Dave “SassyPants”
Damn solid curry. It's so nice to not pay a stupid amount for good curry. I think the small plates need some work but if you go straight to a curry you are in for a treat. Dessert is worth a shot too, and there are games!

Very fairly priced place with a lovely, fruity butter chicken!

Reintroduced me to my love of lentils :)

Amazing service ! Our team at the office wanted to make an order but needed a delivery , although they do not have a delivery system, the manager made a plan to deliver our massive order all the way from Obs to Greenpoint. GREAT butter chicken👍🏼

Had the absolute best dinner at Curry and Craft. The food was excellent and very authentic. The samoosas were the best that I have ever had. The service was fantastic. Incredible value for money. Would highly recommend this place to anyone who enjoys a good curry.

Had their lamb curry a while ago. For that price you can get a far better curry somewhere else. Was very disappointing when i received it, hardly any meat and mostly bone. For that price i'd just go to wembley roadhouse, value for money and excellent food throughout.
Alex The Entertainer
---Entertainer Accepted--- I must advise before I move forward with review, this venue has issues with entertainer as I was advised they were supposed to be removed this year but have not, Entertainer CHEERS is not accepted to my understand of my waitress.

This too I have waited awhile to try, I went on odd occasions during he festive season to find they were contanstly closed and heard rumours that they are leaving the area to not reopen. I was happily proven wrong! We went on a random Monday and a friend of mine has a passion for Indian cuisine, I opted for curry and craft and it was on! Now I ordered the butter chicken with a side of rice and it blew my mind! I felt guilty using the entertainer as I felt full price was deserved! I brought along 2 friends with me who had each had the same full chicken bunny chow, they were just as astounded as I was by the glory of the food, I honestly am not fond of Indian food but this is deserving of a try. There are a few games set available for people to play such as UNO. I would like to advise we had chicken all round because the lamb was done by the time we got to order, the waitress as wonderful as she was took incredibly long to take our order, I feel if she was a bit more on the ball we would have received our lamb orders, however I would like to advise she was waiting alone and the place was becoming stacked, I cannot blame her for this, the chicken ran out as well while myself and company was dining, I suggest all reading to try and get there early to avoid disappointment. My apologies for not uploading pictures the presentation and smell took over and had no chance to take any pictures. Toilets are fresh and clean, I absolutely will return in hopes to get my lamb, I have faith this venue will grow larger and have sincere hopes for it to franchise

Went for lunch with a colleague - had a sneaky bunny chow, which was delicious. Colleague had the butter chicken which smelled too good and he really enjoyed it too. Beer and bunny for lunch was great value for money and the place has a great vibe.

Will definitely be making many more sneaky lunch visits!

I have been there with the new management and an improvement a must for all curry lovers 🤗 the staff was friendly, clean my compliments to the new owners

Went to Curry and Craft a little while ago. Given that I generally making my own curry, when I go to restaurants that serve curry, I expect it to be fantastic.
Zimkhitha Sulelo
It was my first time there and the Durban style chicken I had was delicious. I loved the spices but I just prefer my chicken with bones for a curry.
The samosas were tasty and I would have given a better rating if only they had a few desserts options.
Foodgasm_za
Enjoyed the food. Service was average as there was only one server. Here's why it gets a 1 rating, I used a wikideals voucher which entitles the holder to 2 starters, 2 mains and 2 sides. We ordered the tandoori wings and Puri as starters only to be told they were out. So we had to settle for samoosas and onion rings (the only other options on the menu). Another couple arrived after us and they ordered tandoori wings and got them. That's downright unethical. Also I realised I was running out of roti while having the lamb curry so I ordered another one. They took so long that I had to cancel it as my food would've been ice cold by the time time they had brought it. There was only one other table occupied and it only takes a couple minutes to fry a roti. What could have been a wonderful eating experience was marred by poor and unethical service.

A stunning little gem in Observatory. The interior is simple, beautiful and cosy and the staff are very helpful and polite. Our waiter was really good and friendly. They went out of their way to accommodate food allergies and the food was delicious and their portions generous.

This was another Daddy's Deals find. The vibe is very trendy. The lady who served us was super friendly, we just found it odd that when we walked in there was a table with at least two people who we later noticed seem to be actively involved in the running of the restaurant who didn't greet and just looked at us until our waitress popped up. The tandoori wings we had were amazing and the thali meal was an experience. We liked that they aren't shy about spiciness. They seem to have great happy hour specials so keep them on your list
Mr Creosote
Friendly service. The food is good value and reliable quality. They serve some good craft beer as well. Free and unlimited wifi. No need to register or jump thru other annoying hoops. A good place to watch the world cup soccer on the big screen. This place deserves to be more popular.

Great food, great vibe. One waitor for the whole place but he was fantastic, energetic and extremely helpful!

Food was great, each curry had its own unique, authentic flavours, with the Durban lamb curry being the star on the plate!

Definitely recommend 👌

I visited this establishment as I was looking for a restaurant that serves bunny chows close to the souther suburbs. I ordered the lamb and my wife ordered the chicken. It has a cosy vibe with card games and board games available to patrons. The service was good and food came quick. I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of flavor that was packed into the lamb curry and the heat was perfect! The chicken however tasted as if the spices had been slightly burnt, but was still a decent curry and the portion sizes were good. We tried the 2 Rosebank craft beers they had on tap. The ale was lovely, but the larger had a very sour taste to it. Overall a great night out with good food at a great price! I will definitely go back for the lamb bunny!

Lamb bunny 4/5
Chicken bunny 2/5

Enjoy!
After a long trip to Cape Town from Plett we enjoyed some tasteful curry and wine at this hidden gem! My choice, the Durban curry was perfect in ever single way in terms of taste. However the ratio of potatoes to chicken was abit disappointing. Nothing our kind waiter couldn't fix, she brought me a side of potatoes cooked in my choice sauce which actually made my meal whole again. The Chicken could be a little more tender but other than that, I highly recommend this hidden gem! It's food is divine and the atmosphere is fun and visually pleasing too. I will definitely be back!!

I am sorry to say but if you are in the mood for some really good indian food then this is not the place to get it. We drove all the way from somerset west just because my husband who is from Durban and Indian saw this and it said Durban curries.... a very big dissapointment. Please don't say Durban curries when it clearly isn't.
Bit of a disappointing experience tonight. The evening started well - there is a nice ambiance to the space, and the restaurant was full, which we took as a good sign. Turns out, it was the opposite - everyone was sitting around waiting for their food to arrive. Waiting and waiting. The poor waiter - who was lovely, but overwhelmed - was rushed off his feet, and the kitchen was completely backed up. We arrived at 7.30, and only got our order at 9. The saving grace was that they have a small stash of board games in the corner - we literally played cards to pass the time. When the food arrived it was pleasant enough. I enjoyed the butter chicken, although my partner, who is from Durban, says it is inauthentic. We found the place a bit overpriced for what you got at the end of the day. Sadly, won’t be rushing back anytime soon.

Finally got to Curry and Craft this evening. Curry is not curry if its a sauce and meat. my wife and I are curry addicts so we will give it a go, good or bad. This was very good. The curry is cooked thru to the bone and the flavours leave you yearning for more. Apart from the dahl being a little runny, the lamb and chicken curry were great and can stand up to any establishment. Minimilism is the order of the day and so it should be. Let the flavours speak for themselves. Good luck and we will be back. Compared to other's prices one can have 2 of each curries.

Small but fantastic place. The menu is compact, offering a simple selection. That being said, the Durban lamb curry and Thali were both very enjoyable. Service was quick and friendly. A good selection of beers and throw in some specials makes it an overall great experience. Already looking forward to coming again

This was the worst curry I have tasted in my life. Being from Durban and I can honestly say this idea of it being a Durban curry completely being far fetched. Definitely the first and last time going for a curry there..
Markus Hegewisch
Lovely modern place on the edge of Obs. Limited menu of curries but a nice range of craft beers. Beware... when they say it has a bite, they mean their curries are angry! ;) 💣🌶

amazing restaurant with incredible atmosphere as well as deliciously fragrant and flavourful dishes. Curry and craft beer - couldn't have dreamed of a better combo!

Had an incredible experience at Curry & Craft last weekend! I ordered the butter chicken samosas and a Durban lamb curry and both were excellent and refreshingly balanced. Always exciting seeing a new place find its feet and can't wait to come back again!

Was looking forward to coming here as I heard about it from a friend. Despite the butter chicken having a good flavour I was rather disappointed at how dry it was, my partner also mentioned that the bread used for his bunny chow tasted stale and not fresh at all. Despite our friendly waiter and relatively quick waiting time for our food I'm afraid to say we wont be back in a rush.

A little underwhelmed by Curry & Craft. Even though the food is well masqueraded as Indian, it’s definitely anything but it. The curries taste very much like pasta sauce and the pictures of Hindu Gods hanging around feel quite ill-placed.

Otherwise, I enjoyed the roti and they have a decent selection of craft beers so maybe that ticks 1 out of 2.
Eve
The food was very nice but the service was a bit slow. We were asked whether we wanted rice or roti with our meals and not informed that they were not included in the price of the curry. This I think is a very unfair practice and we only realised when we received the bill.

Excellent Rogan Josh - so tasty - and the selection of 3 vegetarian curries were beautifully presented. Food cooked with love. Beer- interesting selection especially tasty was the Rosebank ale from a small new brewery in Rosebank - love the going local vibe in supporting businesses close by. Well done to the new owners - certainly worth a visit!

Great decor in the restaurant. Menu quite simple and straight forward!

Wine comes in small glasses- too expensive for the quantity you get.

Food was very disappointing. Mains range from R65-R105. We shared Durban lamb curry and paneer. Both not the best, have had better food at Maharaj Vegetarian.

You have to order sides which come at an extra cost. Bit cheeky!

All in all, great vibe but wouldn't go back for food.

Bill came to R270 even with entertainer discounts! Not worth going the prices.
Ludi Cronje
Experience was spoilt by a bad entertainer app experience where the restaurant refused to stand by a special offer which they were contractually bind by. Food and service were however good.
Wendy Mvinjelwa
What a welcoming space with an easy menu to navigate. Food was really good perfect portion sizes however wish they served the wine in an actual wine glass.

We decided to try out the newest kid on the block on the Cape Town Curry Scene. The Liesbeeck Amber Ale was a perfect accompanied for the food which took a while to come BUT was definitely cooked fresh. I had the Thali which was a sample of 3 curries of their menu (Butter Chicken, Durban Lamb Curry and Potato Curry) served with Sambals, Dahl, Rice and a Roti. Hubby had the Durban Lamb Curry. As mentioned the food was fresh, with a lot of meat and not with overwhelming richness of cream. The lamb was cooked to soft perfection. It definitely came with a bit of a kick but a delightful, bearable hint of chilli. Portions were bigger than average. We had the Chocolate Cashew Nut Samoosas for Dessert which was good to share after such a big meal.
The waiter was friendly, a little slow but being a new place and enjoying our beers, we didn't mind at all.
Amazing, delicious curries full of flavour! Sorry no pictures-we quickly finished our food before any could be taken as it was so delicious:) We had the Lamb Rogan Josh and the Butter Chicken with rice and a roti. The craft beers and gin on tap were also yummy and unique! The service and friendly vibes were awesome too. Can't wait to try more and will definitely be back soon(the entertainer was a bonus but would pay full price as it was so good). A great spot for lunch, supper or to have drinks after work!

I’m from Durban and had a craving for real Durban food. I was so excited after my first experience at Curry and Craft that I just had to write a review (which is something I don’t usually do) and I will definitely go back there. The food was delicious and exactly what I wanted. I went with three friends and between the four of us we ordered 2 Thalis and a butter chicken curry which we all shared. The Thalis were great and gave us a chance to sample a variety of food. The cost of the Thali was R120. We got Durban lamb, butter chicken and palak paneer plus dhal, carrot salad, raita and rice and a homemade roti. We also had chicken samosas which we wiped out within minutes. The waiter was attentive and pleasant. Our overall experience was very good

Food is amazing! The samoosas and the Lamb Roganjosh is personally my favourite (i highly recommend having it with the tzatziki) We have always been greeted by the owners during our visit, they are super friendly and awesome! Looking forward to going back for dinner this evening.
