Review Maharajah Express - Newlands

Ibrahim D. Bahati
Maharajah was all we needed. Lovable food, my friends got Biryani chicken and I got lamb mixed with yogurt and coconut, it was the best. Customer service is also great. The music is zen and the place is quite cozy. Will definitely be ordering their again.

By far the best curry spot in Cape Town. I’ve been ordering takeaways from Maharajah for the longest time ever. We now have weekly curry Mondays. We decided to actually go to Maharajah today and sit down. I can honestly say the experience today was even better than the takeaways. We started with a vegetarian platter for two which had samoosas, chili bites and deep fried paneer. It was incredible! I then had the paneer kadai and my boyfriend had the lamb off the bone. Both dishes were superb. The staff are also really friendly. Their prices are incredibly reasonable (veg platter, paneer kadai, lamb curry, garlic butter naan, basmati rice and a 1L water for just R371!). As I’m writing this, I’m still so full but excited for my next meal from this wonderful establishment.

What a wonderful experience I had at Maharaj in Rondebosch today. The starter I chose was the chilli bites and main was the lamb biryani. Flavours of both meals were outstanding and the meat was soft and tender. The chefs were amazing and really took there time to deliver an excellent dish. When you find yourself in the Rondebosch area, give them a try. Before I forget, the flavours range from mild, medium to hot. The butter chicken, wow, was outstanding as I ordered it as a takeaway including the lamb curry for my wife and daughter, and they enjoyed so much that they kept some for tomorrow. Portions are not to bad as well. Why I chose to have lunch at Maharaj was the reviews I got from my friends and wanted to try it out myself and was I not disappointed. It's not to pricey but as you can see, everything has gone up. Hope you try them out soon before they move to the Riverside Mall. Until next time.

They have one of the best vegetarian Breyani’s! I usually take the mild option. It has the perfect amount of spice and is packed with flavour and aromas. Add a naan bread and you have the perfect meal!

They make some authentic Durban style biryani. The best thing about Maharaja is their lamb. I don't know where they get their lamb from. But it's really good quality lamb. No other Indian restaurant in Cape Town, to my knowledge, uses this good quality lamb.

If you looking for authentic Indian Durban cuisine, this is the place to go. If you are from Durban and looking for a touch of home or comfort, Bunny chows at Maharajah will help with that little extra touch of home food and comfort.

Food is absolutely good. I'll recommend anyone to this small but big hearted takeaway. Their lamb curry & chicken brieyani is totally out of this world. Sheren or Terence will serve you with a smile on their faces. Keep it up Maharajah

Wow. A real piece of India in my own home. Flavours: explosive, rich, decadent and wholesome. I’ve been an avid supporter of this family-run business for 2 years now. They’ve never disappointed! Give them a try. You’ll thank me later.

Honestly one of the best veg curry and rice I've had in many years and that includes a lifetime of curry in Durban. Veg breyani is also tops. Highly recommended to visit this branch in particular if you're an ex-Durbanite craving your favourite meal.

Maharajah Restaurant catered for a pre-wedding function we had recently. They were professional, the food was excellent and they created the perfect ambiance for a beautiful function. Every item that they catered was of an excellent quality. The chicken on the bone, fish curry, lamb on the bone, samoosas, fish tikka, just to mention a few items, was enjoyed by everyone and all our guests gave excellent comments about the food. Thank you to Terena and Kuben from Maharajah for making this occasion a memorable one. We will definitely use your services again.

This is the first restaurant that did not mess up a curry. It is absolutely authentic Durban cuisine. Definitely going to recommend them to my friends and family x

Maharaj Express is one of Cape Town’s finest curry cuisine venues. Cherin,Terrance and their team are always friendly and very welcoming. Their curries are out of the top drawer, aromatic and most delicious. If you looking for Indian cuisine in Cape Town, then Maharaj Express is a MUST visit. They have recently opened a branch in Rondebosch main road. Maharaj In Newlands,Rondebosch and Gardens Cape Town are all fantastic Indian cuisine venues.Maharaj... My personal favourite💞. <br/>

Wonderful Indian cuisine I had the best lamb mince samosa and a 5 Star butter chicken it was just absolutely delicious, chicken was soft and succulent, butter naan was okay I found it to be slightly doughy. A real gem will definitely be returning 😀

Unfortunately, I got food poisoning from here, and would definitely not be returning purely on that basis alone. Delicious food (we enjoyed our butter chicken and planner butter masala), but it is also rather pricey for what you get, especially if you order the small size - for a price difference of R15, you get literally a third of the large portion size and a piddly portion of rice. Naan is average, and the paneer was a bit bland and served in large chunks, rather than the conventional smaller pieces I like better. The takeaway did also take quite a while to arrive. Fair warning, the hot is VERY spicy!

This place is the ultimate gem of Newlands! Best curry and great portions, had the Chicken Korma once and the very next night I had a Butter Chicken. I can’t even decide which one was better ❤️ at the most reasonable price! A definite must visit!

Literally the worst "curry" experience I've had in Cape Town, and such a pity because no establishment should be willing to stoop this low. Taste is nothing special at best; tasteless and off-putting at worst. The staff are pushy and rude. Served with undercooked Tastic rice, with a "basmati" price tag. I ended up ordering in pizza. Give this one a skip!

With 3 generations of the family behind the cooking, what they have forgotten isn't worth knowing. <br/>We ordered a veg curry mild, a chicken Korma mild, a butter chicken mild & 2 hot lambs off the bone + 5 Samosa. Quite delicious although the samosa I should have given a quick fry once home. Copious plain rice. Despite it's restricted menu the hosts are more than happy to arrange for different requirements IE Duck !!! beef Etc. the Pillay family represent not the Rolls Royce of North Indian cooking BUT the Range Rover ! The bill amounted to R625.00 & was excellent value. David and Eileen.

Excellent, friendly service and the most amazing curry! The butter chicken is our absolute best. It's delicious every time! Maharajah Express has become our new favourite curry place!

I have been to a few curry houses around CPT,and I must say, this a definitely in my top 3. Excellent service and more importantly tasty curry. I ordered the both chicken curry & briyani. The portions are generous and one portion is enough for two. Will definitely be going back!

This is real value for money! Did a large take out for family which was ready on time. Paneer Butter Marsala was our favourite. Mild was mild for those who dont like hot. I would highly recommend this take out.👌

I am so angry that this Indian restaurant closes at 9pm but not 11pm. This is not right because people can't eat opening late. Also I hope this restaurant grows but also the owner can make a lot more money then.

Best curry in the Southern Suburbs. Beats Bihari and Bukhara in terms of flavours and quality of ingredients and taste. Very well priced (that charging more for Basmati rice is totally reasonable). The Butter Chicken MED is my favourite, Korma great too if you like milder. Chicken is always very tender. Perfect curry flavours. Samoosas not the best I've ever had but the curries are sublime and so reasonable to take home and eat there with homemade sambals, naan, etc. if you prefer. This is a takeout joint not intended to be a formal sit-down restaurant. Will be back as usual time and time again for the best.  So pleased you have come to the Southern Suburbs.

Amazing flavors, freshly cooked, excellent food. Mainly a takeaway place . Order in advance as food takes about 30 mins to prepare but well worth the wait.

Ordered the chicken curry and asked for basmati. Was strange that they charged r10 extra for the basmati. I don't see how any other rice but basmati should even be an option at a curry house in Newlands. Above that they gave me a ridiculous amount of rice as they overcooked it. The curry wasn't nice at all, seemed like they had recently made the batch and therefore the chicken was not tender and the curry itself was amateur. Won't see me again unless I see better reviews on this place. Giving them a rating of 1 as I had actually consumed half and it filled my hunger. Overall very disappointed wasn't tasty at all.

Easy to order - got a large order of lamb off the bone and butter chicken for a dinner party. Food was really delicious and pleased to have a good curry in the southern suburbs. Owners went out of their way to make the curries in my dishes and offered to deliver too.

Ordered though Uber Eats and enjoyed the butter chicken curry that I had. There was a lot of tender chicken and plenty of sauce - very good value for money.

The food was satisfactory but the staff were dishonest. Please check your takeaway if you choose to order from this branch. Also don't bother ordering their basmati rice; they will give you parboiled rice which comes free with curries anyway. Highly disappointed; I really dont appreciate being treated like an unaware person. Next time I'll spend my money at the dim sum bar next door. These guys will need to treat their customers with respect if they plan to survive.<br/>
