Review Wijnhuis - Newlands

Khosi Nkanyezi Buthelezi
First time going there. True to their promise, they have 20 wines by glass and an album full of wine by bottle
Dee Griffin
I have been here a few times but only for drinks. My most recent visit was the first time I had food here and I was not disappointed. We were a fairly large table, but our waitress took time to explain the menu and the specials. Our food came quickly and everyone enjoyed their dishes. I had the burger which was cooked to perfection, well seasoned and in a delicious bun. My only negative (with the exception of the burger which is very reasonable) is that the prices are quite high for the type of food. Will be back though!

I had a delicious bowl of minestrone and my friend had a sirloin. We both enjoyed our meals. The service was excellent. The view of the mountain from our comfortable corner seat was spectacular. I loved the white table cloths.

Fish was good. Very well presented. The food menu had a bit of everything. But what we were most blown away by was the amazing dessert! Best (warm) baked cheesecake I've ever had and delectable nougat semi-freddo.

The food is always tasty and I believe they make the best fillet steak. I love their bread and the lamb curry is to die for. Oh...let's not forget the calamari.....deliciously good! Great service too!

Good atmosphere, excellent service from a young waiter Charlie, and clean tables and furnishings. The best is the food. Their freshly baked bread given to tables is mouth watering and worth having a meal there just to eat the bread! Their chili garlic beef is delicious and tender and perfectly cooked.

What has happened to the crowds? I remember when you couldn’t get a booking for weeks in advance. Still lovely, great food, amazing wine list, awesome service but just missing the vibe. Quiet, cold and empty. Hope you get your mojo back soon.

Highly recommend the baby kingklip. Lovely venue and great ambience for meals with friends and/or date night! Service has always been wonderful and the chef is happily willing to accomodate special requests. The wine selection is tremendous!

The food is excellent , my fish was fantastic and my friends said they had perfect steaks However the acoustic of the restaurant is terrible, one can't have a conversation without shouting to be heard . I found it so irritating I will think twice before returning despite the excellent food .

I enjoyed the renovated look and the openess of the space. The food was lovely and the tasting beer platter lots of fun for the beer drinkers. The staff could have been a bit more attentive as I felt they did not check on us or clear the tables.

We visited the restaurant twice. The first tme my wife had mussels and u had the veal with mushroom sauce. The plate of mussels was so large we both could not finish the serving. They were delicious. The veal was very tender and the sauce delicious.

An excellent venue for our end of year board meeting/dinner - a spacious function room with attentive but discreet staff, followed by an excellent meal and all at a reasonable rate. Thoroughly enjoyable, will do it again!
Steve Mitchell
Great experienced staff who can provide excellent info on the wine they offer. Really warm, welcoming and cozy atmosphere for a large-ish place. Will definitely go back!

Awesome place to have an event. Friendly and accommodating staff. Loved that they allowed us to make our own menu for the evening from their restaurant menu and allowed us to decor the night before.
Ralf Steinbrink
Really impressed with the service, the quality of the food that was served and the atmosphere of the establishment. Definately recommended.

Amazing wine list, very reasonable amount of wines by the glass. Chic but homie atmosphere. Staff was not very inviting (maybe a trainee helped us)...and prices a bit steep for what you get food wise. But all in all a pleasant place to enjoy a nice bottle of wine
Nicole
Lovely little restaurant tucked away in the corner but with gorgeous views of the mountain. Food is delicious and the wine menu is extensive especially for wine by the glass which you don’t usually get at most restaurants-I will def go back and recommend it. The service was also fantastic-thanks Mocca!

Did a wine tasting here, great great selection of wines! And the place is beautiful and relaxed. Would like to return to try the food. The service could have been a lot better, as we had to struggle to find a waiter to help us when we wanted to order, and when we wanted the bill. On the plus side though, they serve delicious popcorn as a complimentary bar snack. My friend who visits often says that she is usually served by someone who wasn't there yesterday, who is a lot more friendly and attentive. So worth visiting again, would like to try more wine from their extensive wine list.

I always kick myself for not visiting this place in the suburbs more often. There is the most beautiful view of the mountain and it really is a beautiful spot in the suburbs. You almost feel as if you are in a loft. The service is always exceptional and their is a very large selection of wine, as well as tasting options. The food is always on point and never disappoints

Heritage building, a great open expanse with vaulted ceilings, long bar and european styled decor. <br/><br/>Attentive service and as one would expect an extensive wine list. We tried the fillet and grilled calamari. Both were cooked to perfection. Other dishes seemed equally appealing.<br/><br/>Recommended.

Such an amazing experience visiting Wijnhuis. Everything was spot on - brilliant service, steaks cooked to absolute perfection and a lovely setting. The greenery of Newlands really adds to the experience. Fantastic all-round.

Saw the name of this restaurant and being the wine lover that I am I decided to give it a try, it's quite so I had just spotted it by chance.<br/><br/>I went on a Friday afternoon and the restaurant was actually pretty quiet.. <br/><br/>The restaurant had such a wide variety of wines which is really nice, but I also found it a bit overwhelming when it actually came to choosing a bottle, but our waiter was very friendly in that regard.. <br/><br/>The starter bread we were served upon arrival is literally top 5, it was good we even asked for seconds! To eat we had spaghetti & meatballs and those were a bit on the spicy side but still enjoyable nonetheless. I did find that the food menu was a bit on the pricey side but there were a few adorable options.

This is my favourite restaurant in the burbs. Always friendly staff. Fantastic wine range (at good prices) and never get bored of the food. I bring all my friends there.

Had a lovely quiet night with some friends. Enjoyed their 200g sirloin steak which was made to perfection( medium-well). Id also recommend their wine tasting which is R60 for 5 wines.

This is a hidden gem. Not high profile or widely marketed, it takes a bit of finding but once settled inside you are in for a great meal. I enjoy the slightly unusual menu and interesting offerings, always presented impeccably. The service is professional and slick and the wine list always has a few gems. The specials are always well thought through and delicious, I usually don't venture too far. If it weren't for the hall-like layout and slightly cold feel, I would rate closer to 5 stars.

The food was great, had me a salad. Let's be honest nobody wants to hear about that though. So here's the tea on the wine. Their bottle list is so long... I found my eyes tiring, but my heart was overjoyed. During September there's no corkage so I'm deffos going back.<br/><br/>However the service was a let down and took much longer than need, but the food and wine did arrive quickly the issue was the availability of assistance.

A lovely evening out at the Wijnhuis. As the name suggests, there is a great selection of wines to choose from. The waiters were very efficient and food arrived quite quickly. The baby King Clip was quite big but delicious. T-bone steak was quite tasty. Desserts didn't disappoint with the warm flourless chocolate tart being the favourite!

Veal lemon is the best thing about this place. Good friendly service and a great warm, comforting atmosphere. Particularly great in winter with a glass of red wine. The branch in Stellenbosch is equally good If not better.
Simphiwe Sim Mthembu
A la cart menu with the chefs own special way of presenting a classic steak, very impressed with the creativity. This place is a classic looking winehouse situated close to new lands stadium. The owner is very hands-on and this is evident in the quality of service you will experience here. The decor is dedicated to winemakers of the cape, great wine pairing experience.

A great casual place to go for a drink or meal. Modern warehouse decor is cool and welcoming. We had beef carpaccio with artichokes and red pepper, and veal with lemon. The generous portion of carpaccio was delicious though perhaps too much meat and too few vegetables. The veal was sublimely tender and tasty. Service was excellent from a delightful waiter who went or of his way to look after us.

What an excellent, restaurant. Top class food and service! Highly recommended! Pity there was no QR code payment service like snapscan, otherwise a great vibe.

Always a winner. We've been frequenting this restaurant for years now. Staff are super friendly and efficient. They even know our favourite spot to sit. The decor and ambiance is outstanding. I wish we lived in Newlands so we could walk down to Wijnhuis once a week!

Really nice place to have a quick, in-and-out sit down lunch. Perfect during the work day and they offer a lunch special, go check it out, your money will be well spent.

Cool spot in Newlands<br/>✔️ Lots of wine to chose from by the glass, carafe and bottle<br/>✔️Cheese platter and cold meat platter were really nice and full of amazing produce <br/>✖️ Food is quite overpriced <br/>〰Our waiter was very attentive when we finally got helped but very serious 😐<br/>Nice place for drinks after work <br/>

Wijnhuis is absolutely wonderful! We went mid week as a treat and it was delicious! I had the kingklip fillets which were perfectly cooked and the side spinach was also very tasty. The rest of the table had the veal and fried calamari which all looked very delicious! A must try are their chips served with a truffle mayo! We had the Nutella tart for desert and while not tasting anything like Nutella it was rather a very moist, rich, delicious chocolate tart with hazelnuts. <br/><br/>They have a great wine and beer selection. Our waiter was good but lacked a bit of attention toward the end. However definitely a place I would be happy to again!

An afternoon well spent! Architecturally pleasing and very modern in design, this restaurant offers a great menu, comprehensive and varied wine list, good service and well presented, tasty food.

Average sy best. Better places to go to. Not sure what there fuss is about. Waiter unable to explain or describe menu items. At least the soup and homemade bread were not too bad.
Dennis Chiang
Awesome place!! Large wine list, the chili calamari is a must have. I have ordered it every single time i come here, and it is always very good! The sole is a winner! Seafood here is always fresh and never a let down. The home made bread with butter is mouth watering!

This is a lovely looking restaurant, especially at night. The service was good, our waitress was friendly. <br/><br/>We ordered a variety of dishes to start, the standouts from the starters were definitely the lamb meatballs and the Funghi bruschetta. I had the salmon medallions, they were quite rich but it was a generous portion. Overall it was a lovely evening and we will definitely be back.

Wijnhuis is a beautiful designed restaurant which boasts Devils Peak as its backdrop through the large glass windows. The restaurant is very accommodating and has great service. Perfect location to relax with a glass of wine after work. For starters my friend an I shared bruschettas topped with mozzarella and tomatoes. For mains my friend ordered the queen prawns which was played on a bed of rice and I had the chicken pasta. For dessert we ordered the baked cheese cake. The prawns were delicious and spicy as we requested it to be. However I did not enjoy the chicken pasta very much. I found it a bit bland. Overall I enjoyed the evening and scenery!

I visited Wjinhuis last night with a girlfriend and we had the best time! <br/><br/>We had a bottle of the Graham Beck MCC and ordered a few tapas to share. Everything was divine - the calamari had a crispy but not over powering batter and the dipping sauce had a bit of spice which I loved. The venison empanadas were also perfect and came with a cranberry and chilli sauce - yum! <br/><br/>I'd really like to see a cheese and charcuterie board on the menu (as opposed to two separate boards only) and the waiters need a bit of training on the wines. Unfortunately because of the season we couldn't get the 6 wine tastings options - I'll be back for that soon. <br/><br/>All in all a really great time, our waiter was very patient as the evening went on and the second bottle of wine was ordered.

Had supper here on a Wednesday night and it was busy and very loud. Starters were bruschetta and unfortunately they were chewy and stale. The parma ham topping was delicious but the funghi bruschetta had only one piece of mushroom and tasted like courgettes. The steaks however were superb - cooked to perfection and served with delicious sauces (side veggies weren't great - 2 sad green beans and watery spinach.) The desserts were presented nicely but were average from a taste factor - no wow factor. Service was mediocre. Meh.

I cannot recommend this place enough! We came here for my 20th Birthday dinner in June and it was just fabulous! It's one of my my parents' favourite week-night dinner venues and it's such a treat when we get to come along too! It's one of those restaurants that just feels really homey and welcoming when you walk in. The waiters smiled and greeted us as we were taken to our table; from the get-go, you just get the feeling you are going to be taken care of.<br/><br/>Tonight, our waiter was Maikhail and he was not the first brilliant waiter we have been given at Wijnhuis; Friendly, on the ball, respectful and only too willing to make sure we we were happy throughout the evening. I had my usual... The Peri Peri Queen Prawns with the rocket side salad. I swear this meal gets better every time🙌🏽 I wish I knew what Magic the chefs are working in the kitchen, but the prawns are just absolutely incredible! Juicy and succulent and full of flavour! I love my spicy food and the peri peri sauce drizzled over the prawns is thick but not too rich, tasty and just the right amount of heat👌🏼<br/><br/>It may seem lame to comment on the side dish, but the rocket is genuinely amazing and fresh as are the sliced tomatoes! Many restaurants try get away with serving soggy salad ingredients, but Wijnhuis is not one of them. My sister and mum also raved about their prawns and my dad's clean plate was a subtle indication that his kingklip wasn't all that bad😜<br/><br/>Mikhail gave us top quality service, returning to ask how were were enjoying our meal as well as being genuinely respectful and tentative to simple requests for water and an ice bucket for our wine<br/><br/>All I can conclude with is that I can't wait to go back! It's such a wonderful thing to end a night off on a good note, and that's really what we did tonight! Thank you Wijnhuis❤️

Had a lovely dinner at this restaurant with some friends. Cozy environment with a sophisticated feel to it. Started with the wine tasting for R50 which was great and then had the 200g sirloin with garlic broccoli and sweet potato. I would have preferred sweet potato without cinnamon ,however the meal was good regardless! Loved the garlic broccoli😊

Just popped in for a quick drink, and enjoyed some delicious pink bubbly! I loved the chilled, trendy atmosphere of this place, and the aromas emanating from the kitchen were simply divine! Can't wait to go back for dinner and wine!

I went here by accident really. Was going to pop into Barristers, but we saw the sign for this and thought we would give it a try.  I was staying temporarily in the Southern Suburbs, so it was nice to try out a bunch of new places<br/><br/>They were fully booked but there was space for us to squeeze into a table in the corner.<br/><br/>Quite a lovely looking building inside. Kind of made me wish i had a home sort of like it.  We ordered dinner and were very impressed.  I had a beef schnitzel, something I would hardly every order these days and it was superb.  I tend to avoid them in case they are oily and meh, but this was just lovely..<br/><br/>The missus had a steak and a tomato salad.  She loved it.Looking forward to going there again...Just a bit far away from Town for us to pop into on a regular basis.

Great service and ambience! I had the 400g rump it was cooked to perfection however the mushroom sauce needed to be thicker and creamier to accompany the steak perfectly. Their Dom Pedro was a superb way to end off the evening!

Once every 6 months or so I find myself reluctantly coming in here because neighboring restaurants are booked. <br/><br/>I'm always disappointed. It's not the food: that's actually pretty decent. <br/><br/>But the service is appalling. Staff are so uniformly downcast in their demeanor, devoid of smiles, and doing such a good job of ignoring customers trying to get their attention. It must start with management. The fish rots from the head down, they say. I can't think of why so many staff or such a long time would be so similar in their "I really wish I wasn't here, and now that I think of it, would you just leave, please?" attitude.
Justin R. Melville
This reviews comes to after 30mins of being completely ignored by all the staff. This remains the only place I've ever left without paying (because no one could be bothered to serve me the bill for 45mins).

Wijnhuis Newlands is a great place for a solid meal. I enjoyed the variety of wines available by the glass and different size options ie. from 150ml to a carafe of 370ml.<br/>We started with two carpaccios - the Kudu and Beef carpaccio. Both were excellent. The 400g Rump that I had for my main course was also very good and well aged.<br/><br/>Service was attentive and the restaurant vibey.
Vanessa Scott-Hall
I love Die Wijnhuis, the service has always been excellent and I have never had a bad meal. Something as simple as truffle infused mayonnaise with chips, just brings a huge smile to my face. Lovely bar area with a great selection of wines by the glass. Beautiful surroundings in leafy Newlands. One of my favourites....
