Barristers: Best place for families, friends and even for first dates ;)
Amazing staff, vibes and lets not forget the food- I highly recommend the Chicken Schnitzel + Mushroom Sauce + Chips = HEAVEN!
Never been disappointed... Wonderful food and ambiance... It’s a well know “ LOCAL” in Newlands and long may it last... Parking is a bit of a problem but if one lives nearby it’s nothing to take a slow stroll and enjoy the exercise....
A gem. An experience. An excellent find.
We went here for a friends farewell dinner and I had the best restaurant experience I’ve had in a while. The service was excellent - our waiter was very welcoming and energetic.
The food was just as good and there were enough vegetarian options for me to pick from.
I’ll absolutely be dining at this place again soon.
A decent selection of beers, craft and main stream available. Their pub lunch special at R60 between 12 and 6pm is probably the best value for money with a selection of 20 different things to choose from ranging from their egg noodle stir fry to their butternut and beetroot salad. The soft couches and seats with cloth napkins and dark wood style decor give the place a feel of laid back class. The food quality is decent and the experience is nice for a night out but nothing spectacular.
The food at barristers has a very homey touch to it. Their dishes are filling nutritious and very tasty they definitely are not a gourmet restaurant however you will always leave satisfied. I strongly recommend the chicken schnitzel and all the sauces are amazing I just wish they gave a portion that could cover the food.
The pub lunch is R65 and well worth it. This special ends at 6pm.
Service was great and the staff were all very jacked up and accommodating. We will be back again soon. O and be sure to try the free range gherkins on the barristers burger 😂
Best pub in the area, better than the overpriced "institution" on Newlands Avenue. The lunch special is a winner for value. Decent pub grub otherwise and a great selection of beers. Only downside comes to watching sport in groups - then again, for an early game with a mate or two it's not bad at all.
Old English charm, good service and good ambience especially if you're watching a game with friends and family. A good variety of lunch time specials that almost everyone will enjoy!
I've been to Barristers multiple times for their R65 lunch special.
There are so many options to choose from (mostly traditional pub grub), such as fish and chips, bangers and mash, steak, egg and chips, chicken livers etc. I think there are over 15 options on the lunch special menu!
Don't expect gourmet food, but it should hit the spot. Today, I had grilled fish with butternut and spinach. I found parts of the fish to be a bit slimy, but it wasn't terrible. The chicken schnitzel and mushroom sauce is usually a popular choice among my friends.
After seeing my friends (Emma Bowen and Nqobile Msibi) review this place, I decided to try it out for myself.
Headed to Barristers this afternoon to try the R65 pub lunch special. Two pages dedicated to the special meant there was more than enough choice. Due to time constraints, we couldn't sit down so got a takeaway (add R5 extra per dish for the takeout option). The food was packaged nicely, in good time and arrived steaming hot. We went for the chicken schnitzel with mushroom sauce and chips and the bangers and mash with vegetables and onions. Both were delicious! The schnitzel was crispy on the outside and moist inside and the creamy mushroom sauce was a great accompaniment. The bangers and mash option was equally tasty. Seems like this is the place to go for really great pub style food with its hearty meals and generous portions!
What stops it from getting a full star rating is the service. When we walked in, the waitress was unfriendly, nonchalant and made us stand and wait for a some time before helping us. There's also no real counter to order so getting a takeaway is a bit awkward as you just stand there in the dining area. The interior looks really inviting so i wouldn't mind coming back for a sit-down meal next time.
Vibrant atmosphere with very friendly staff. In the pictures attached is their Camembert and cranberry burger, Barristers beef burger, crumbed mushrooms, malva pudding and peacanut fudge dessert. The food was absolutely tasty and the desserts were amazing. Malva pudding was really great. Food came quite quickly but the service was quite slow.
