Review Bidon Bistro - Muldersdrift

Thomas Meyer
Very chilled coffee spot next to the road. Visited on a Tuesday morning so it was extremely quiet- would imagine that it would be very different over weekends. Coffee was good and very reasonably priced.

Great place outside of Johannesburg. The pizza is amazing. People love to come here for cycling. We came with the car, though. 😉 There is plenty of free parking. This place is super chilled and is a great family place. Service is slow but in a cool location like this one it only adds to the flair. And as mentioned above food is lovely and prices are not cheap but worth the quality you get.

Cyclists paradise. Love love it. I enjoyed my breakfast...something poached egg. The service was excellent. Parking attendants were amazing.

Bidon Bistro is an awesome place, great food, open and spacious. Great outing for the family and their market is really festive, alive and friendly. Many mountain and road cyclists stop here and go ride through the Cradle of Humankind. Craft beer on tap at the restaurant, what more could you want?
Jody Adams
Great place for families, enjoy great food, hiking experience and just the beauty of nature. As cyclists we enjoy this spot
Liliana Goldman
Perfect place for a freshly brewed coffee stop, especially for me the person who loves bicycle rides. Although they are still busy fixing the place. One minus Bidon Bistro is not open every day as they depend on daily cyclists and tourists attendance. Weekend is must to visit. Awesome crowd and the warmest greetings from random cyclists.

Lovely day out, in nature. Pitstop for the cyclists. Staff friendly and knowledgeable. Food hearty and prepared with attention. Thank you it was great.

We stumbled upon this spot when driving by, we made a u-turn to come and have a coffee. Loved the vibe! Had amazing coffee!!!

The company I work for hosted a charity event there and I must say great service received and the owners are quite friendly, kind and helpful... We enjoyed different flavors of Pizzas.. Wow it was mouthwatering
Breadline Pretoria
Just happened upon this place while we were on that side. Was very enjoyable! Kids loved it.
Pierre De Kock
An amazing experience. We were privileged to meet the owner and the chef. Definitely a must!!!!
Carol Lenzi
Always a nice place to go to after... Or during a cycle to stop for a coffee. No cash! Which is a good thing.
Christine Barnard
Absolutely amazing day! Best food, handpicked wines and super staff👌Thanks Andrea and Team 🌻

We used it as a get together and starting point for our Land Rover & Suzuki Jimny “convoy” drive to Hekpoort 4x4 track at the Hekpoort Primary school. The facility and location seems to be ideal located, for a motoring, motor cycle, bicycle event, and we were served with excellent “real” coffee before departure. Compliments to the barista & team serving such a large group very fast and friendly. We will be back for the food when doing the Cradle outing.
Jessica Vosloo
Lovely service! The staff were very friendly. Expect a bit of waiting time especially when they are busy.

Some of the best burgers I've had. Toasted sandwiches are a little bland but otherwise great place. Good value for money as well.

Lovely country setting with plenty of tables but not nearly enough waiters to service all the tables. Also reserved table given out. Rather disappointing :(
Lisa Botha Gibbon
This was always good after a ride but this last time it was not good. The service is painfully slow, they got the orders wrong three times and the food was ice cold. Not great. I’ll have my breakfast elsewhere next time.

Went for a Sunday Breakfast. The service was excellent and we enjoyed the fresh air and mountain view. It is a bit more on the expensive side, but worth experiencing.
Stuart Merson-Davies
Not a great experience especially on mothers day. 2 of the items on the set menu ran out and it took 45 mins for starters and an hour for mains which was not cooked right - rare steak that should have been medium. I ended up with no dessert and the wife's was not good at all. Food was ok but their famous pork belly which they ran out of..... had a chewy inedible skin and not the crispy I expected. Probably won't go back.
Tarryn Armist
Lovely little place and awesomely dog friendly! Nice and simple menu, stunning location, safe, so family friendly and a nice field for the kids to run around. Waiters were in the ball and very friendly, so cosy! Thank you!
Jacques Loock
An amazing place to have breakfast of brunch with the family really good food. The place is also very popular with cyclists to power up for their trip. However all is welcome with friendly staff
Nadia Henning Pretorius
Delicious is an understatement! Had breakfast on saturday and cant wait to return Sunday! My daughter loved every sip of her first ever milkshake

We first descovered Bidon's soon after Garth opened the venue in May 2016. We have walked the path with them through their various manager but now they have a winner; Robyn. She is dynamic a real 'mover and shaker' and we can see the improvements weekly. Watching space 😆.

Warren adds his creative global chef experience to the dishes teaching his students the art of cooking and plating. You will be plesantly amazed at the dishes coming out of this kitchen 😎.

The pizzas are marerfully created by Thulani who prides himself in exceeding expectations 😂.

Overall a great experience. A real gem in the Cradle!
The food was delicious. Had a soooo delicious refreshing watermelon and feta salad and the chicken breast topped with mushrooms and melted cheese served with sweet potato fries as well as a oven baked pasta dish. The waiter was very nice. The owner/manager was attentive and friendly. I will definitely return

Delish!! Loved the fact you can go for your cycle and come back for a delicious meal - great service and really good coffee!! Lovely outside venue!
Nikitas Joshua Vontas
Beautiful outdoor restraunt with great scenery of countryside. The food was great: pizzas were delicious and the cookies and cream milkshake is a winner. Staff are attentive and interactive.
Grant Rossouw
Service was none existing food overpriced pizza and burger disgusting for the price cannot see how this place can exist people are desperate.
Andre Kleynhans
Food is really good and the setting beautiful. Service is always slow, especially later on Sunday afternoons. Pricing got out of hand, major increase on latest menu

I was at Bidon on Woman's day at the place was hive of activity which is great to see. Our order which took at least 20 mins to place was very simple 1 cappuccino and 2 flat whites. The coffee took forever to arrive and to say the least it was disgusting. It tasted like it had come out of a dispensing machine and very week. It was a pity because the food in general looked very good.

I found A hidden gem last week that serves great breakfast. I had the traditional breakfast. Sunny side fried eggs on toast, with a beef sausage, grilled tomato, crispy bacon and to top it off with some marmalade. Oh that marmalade just brings everything together. I will definitely be going back

I've never been disappointed by the food at Bidon. Mind you all I've had is breakfast after my rides. Breakfast that is heavenly and agrees with the palate always ... not forgetting how the food is beautifully plated and presented.

Service can be a struggle particularly when it gets busy but the food more than compensates.

I won't be ordering your red cappuccino though ... a bit on the disastrous side. Please fix ASAP

After reading many great reviews and seeing a lot of recommendations and pictures of the amazing food, I decided that I would like to have my birthday lunch at Bidon Bistro in June. It was such an amazing experience! The outdoor venue is beautiful with gorgeous surrounds and lots of space for kids to run around. The service from making the booking, to Arnold, our waiter was outstanding! All my friends and family were very happy with their meals and drinks. I can highly recommend the pork belly, the pizzas, the pork burger, and the strawberry cheesecake. All of it was delicious and made with fresh ingredients! I will be back for sure and hope that this restaurant gets the support and patronage that it deserves!

Lovely ambiance and sites. The manager refused to seat us however there were numerous available seats. The waiters were phenomenal, seated us immediately, and were super friendly. The food was well presented, however lacking in flavour.
Angie Spindler
What an absolutely pleasant afternoon. Beautiful setting! Lovely decor. Absolutely delicious food and reasonably priced. Definitely would return. An absolute must if in the Muldersdrift area.
Shane Van Jaarsveldt
Service is good, staff friendly, however the chef needs to go back to school:
1. Pumpkin fritters are not lumps of pumpkin in a dough ball,
2. Chicken Kofta is normally minced chicken around a skewer, not chicken in a dough ball
3. Pork medallions are generally round, not cubes of meat ....

The humus was excellent as were the olives.....

So a mixed bag in terms of food, however the location is great - do beware the pricing though, it is higher than I would have expected for the quality of the food!
Marc Van Jaarsveldt
The only positive of this venue is it's location. Very pretty scenery but as a restaurant.... very not great.

The smoothie is very thin and tasteless. The pizza was not rustic nor original. Standard everyday pizza. The service was slow, unfriendly and not accommodating. The platter was not what was advertised.

The dogs who walk around the tables have figured out when the food arrives at the table, and the chickens are rife with bugs. Not a great experience.
Pigsie
Loved this spot. So laid back in such beautiful surroundings. Lots of hungry mountain bike riders.Menu was surprisingly varied - and the food ample and delicious . Bevies were well chilled and the staff friendly and effective . A really lovely experience .
Kendall Law
All in all this a great spot as you heard toward or from the Cradle of Humankind. It has such a vast array of decoration from rusty bicycles to the pig that trundles along to eat on top of the hill.
The food is good, the chicken burger was nice but lacked some sort of sauce. The same could be said for the pulled pork panini - also dry. Coffee was however great as was the starter (mozzarella puffs). Will be back purely from a location and surrounding beauty factor

Sunday Lunch at Bidon Bistro with family
For starters
I ordered a Prawn torpedo and avocado for starters and the next thing I get the crumbed prawns with no avocado and I asked Gilbert who was our waiter , where is the avocado me he gives me a blank look and says they ran out of avocado 😱
Why on earth did he not tell me this when I was ordering the starter ? Or before??!!

It was quite annoying really a the starter was dry without the Avo
Had to order a tarter sauce to compensate so I can enjoy the prawns
That also took forever ! Later on was given a tomato sauce Ana eventually gotn the tarter sauce 🙉🙉🙉🙉
We also had the roasted butternut and cashew salad which was okay

For mains Kids had Pizza and that's seemed to enjoy them.
I had the pork belly for mains it was good even thought the top was not crackling albeit a tasty dish
Some family members in the table had the following dishes
Sweet potato and halloumi main was okay
Shirt Rib with Chips was just fine
The Beef burger was definitely not nice my friend didn't like it at all , patty was not fresh
All the main dishes were enjoyable .
Pork belly and pizzas are my recommended dishes

Breaking News ! !!
After the mains Gilbert came to say that he would like us to have dessert with him but unfortunately there are no more desserts in the restaurant 😱😱😱🙈😅😅😅
The kids were so disappointed as they were looking forward to their desserts

I get that it was busy during lunch time but definitely no excuse for the crappy service
Terrible dining experience I will not come back anytime soon
The table was always so messy no one cared to clear it !

Bidon Bistro is location is such a great location away from the city of Jozi . It has a Beautiful and green views nice drive on a Sunday but service is a nightmare really !!
The waiters need to serious training on basic service management

Take the drive only if you looking for a different vibe, fresh and beautiful nature views and maybe stop by for coffee if you in the area but definitely would not drive all the way for the service and food offerings .

What a lovely little gem. The food is lovely and the staff and managers are friendly and attentive. The decor is quaint and relaxing. Highly recommend for something different.
Craig Rowe
Great venue, awesome food, lovely view - it's an asset in the area and the staff are super friendly. I would highly recommend breakfast as well as the pizza

Quite surprised by this unassuming place in Mildersdrift. Popped in for lunch on our way somewhere else and it was very good. The beef short ribs fell off the bone and the pork belly was flavourful with plenty of meaty bits. Beer could've been colder and the flies are a nuisance but otherwise it was pleasant to be outside in the country with efficient enough service.
Michelle Thompson
Good food! Good service! And dog friendly, nice family outing for all including fur-kid. Seems to be a firm favorite with cyclists.
Took our little Jack Russel with and our kids and her could play and enjoy being outdoor; the resident dogs were quite accepting of our pooch visiting their place and all came to greet her.
Chere Davidovics
Absolutely beautiful and peaceful location, makes it hard to believe you're just a few minutes out of Jozi.
Unfortunately the venue didn't make up for the dissapointing meal. I decided on the breakfast bowl which had very little Napolitano sauce, curdled bechamel sauce, over cooked egg and a good 5cm thick layer of cheese. Initially I thought I'd just soak up the oil with a napkin and enjoy, but couldn't bring myself to eat any of it.
Very dissapointing

Bidon Bistro is a quaint country restaurant set just off the main road out towards the cradle.

It is spread out like a frequently renovated farm house, sprawling around the duck pond in the middle. The views are beautiful though, with a real sense of being in the country.

You can’t help but relax as you have a slow lunch.

I must warn you, it is cyclist friendly. So if the idea of middle aged men in lycra scares you, you might want to avoid the lunch crowd on weekends.

The menu alludes to fine dining, but the food really is a lot more humble than that. Our charred pork belly was really good, but it lacked an acidity or sweetness to cut through some of the heaviness.

The service is polite and friendly, but perhaps a little slow.

We’ll definitely go back, a nice relaxing country spot, and I look forward to trying the braised brisket that was sold out when we were there.

Went for Sunday brunch. Peaceful and relaxing location.
Service rather poor. Original waiter Nelson was very scarce. In total we were served by 4 different people, seems a bit disorganised.
I ordered a burger and chips and requested the patty done medium. Presentation was great, but patty was 50% raw. Called the manger and asked for the patty to be cooked at the very least. They returned with a new patty and it was better but now 20% raw. I didn't bother sending it back but left the raw portion on my plate and the waiter noted it and apologised and said they should have got it right. Mistakes happen but really, they still couldn't get it right the second time! Also cooking a burger is not that difficult!
My wife's pizza seemed good at least.
I don't think we will be returning in a hurry.

Popped out for a relaxed lunch on a Sunday. Great service with wonderful food. Prices very reasonable. Good selection of craft beers.
The dishes we had were the Blackened Pork Belly and Roasted butternut salad. Both to be recommende.

A beautiful spot to celebrate a special occasion in a relaxed and friendly environment. I loved Bidon. The service was fantastic - from the message in the morning, warning us of the possibility of bad weather to the relaxed attitude to us bringing our own birthday cake... we loved bringing our dog along.
We will certainly be back to make more memories
Natasha Bezuidenhout
Awesome awesome place! Lovely food and great menu options! The waiter was on top if his game (thanks Gavin) Will definitely be back very soon.
Mark Hele
Great food, but seems a little disorganized. Staff friendly, but everything took so long. Was busy and they have a good following, so hope they keep improving.

Lovely new little place in the cradle where we cycle. The location is ideal and the food is good - when it eventually arrives. The service is terrible and extremely slow, and the waitron staff appear to be completely untrained. Such a pity as it's got great potential.

Came to Bidon Bistro for the 1st time today. Went for a cycle while my mom sat working on her laptop. Back at the table I was greeted with a jug of ice cold water & lemon slices. They do this for all their cyclists!! The service was really good, the staff are all so friendly and the food, well that was great!!! The natural fresh smoothies and cold pressed juices made on site were delicious. And the view!!! Wow!! They cater so beautifully to every need.
A must visit!!!

The restaurant is in a wonderful outdoor setting. We want for breakfast after a morning cycle. We were ravished after a two hour cycle which did not do much for our disapointment after having to wait 30 mins for our breakfast to arrive. The breakfasts arrived cold however they were well presented and tasty.

I

Bidon Bistro offers the perfect setting for a relaxing Sunday afternoon lunch and is very popular amongst cyclists. With a view of the Cradle of Humankind and the gorgeous rustic decor you can't go wrong. My favourite was a beautiful old chandelier which they have converted into a bird feeder.

The manager constantly came to check on our table and joked that the service may not be great but the food will be worth it.

I can however say that the service was good, we had a very friendly, punctual waitress and the food was also very impressive . Well presented , generous portions and very tasty. The favourite at our table was by far the Pork Belly. One person at our table complained that their Hamburger was cold but the manager attended to it very quickly and a few minutes later he was served a new plate of food!

We had a lovely afternoon at Bidon and I will definitely be back to try their breakfast and interesting smoothie menu.

I was there with my family visiting fr overseas. It was a weekday in the early hours of the afternoon. We received the warmest welcome from both staff and owner. The food and the scenery were lovely. I will definitely be back to escape the city buzz. Keep up the good work!
Jen Obermeyer
Incredible spot - totally worth the drive out and the service was excellent. Food was out of the ordinary! They really make an effort to wow you. Will be back!

Single speed cycling around the Cradle makes me grumpy and thirsty. To ensure that I get back on my bike I am led on with the promise of a cappucino at Bidon. It gets me back on my bike and peddling slowly up that last hill to flop exhausted on a chair and enjoy the view while I catch my breath.

Love the atmosphere here, always bustling with lycra wearing coffee drinkers and other outdoor enthusiasts..

I have only sampled their cappucinos and pumpkin & feta fritters which is really not enough to qualify my score, but we will be back so only time will tell if this place will keep up the good work....
Candice Gerber
What an unfortunate afternoon, I'm willing to go back and try this place again as the gent that served us was very accommodating when the cheesecake we ordered was just awful. It was watery and granulated. I have heard good things about the place and an added bonus was its pet friendly so I will definitely be back to try the cheesecake again. Hopefully next it's way better.
Taya Heath
Awful service, average food.. I ordered a medium rare tenderloin, and Received a well done steak 40 minutes after the rest of the table finished their food... No apologies, only excuses... Go and enjoy the view and eat pizza only!!
Cory
This scores high for creativity. Sure, there is no inside sit down. But, that's what it is, an outdoor eatery. It does have a lean to roof. If you don't like to sit outside, go somewhere else. But, you'll miss out on excellent food, happy and welcome service and great ambience. The chef is excellent, has a creative menu and presents attractive plating. Take your own booze and save on the bill.
Edzard Bosch
Had great pizza with a view and generally happy vibe. The managers and an owner came to our table and had a friendly chat. We even had some dogs come to say a quick hallo.

I'm going back today.
Alma Pretorius
If you like to sit outside in freezing weather, without the option of sitting inside a building - visit Bidon Bistro.

I was looking forward to the interesting menu items, but really ... with a freezing wind blowing, it would not have been any fun. Your food and hot drinks will be cold before it reach your table.

I'm really shocked that there's no inside option ... so in Summer, you have to sit in the rain? Where to park is also real confusing.
GMan
I somehow feel that this place should be the highlight of great food, great service and great scenery. What a way to spend my birthday just outside in the sun on a winter Saturday. Thanks for a great time. P.s. Dog friendly cute pets.

This is my favourite spot at the moment for scrambled egg. They make them just right with some #camberbet cheese. @bidonbistro #illhavewhatdimitrihas #yourtastebuds #reviewnotsponsored

We'll prepared pizza with fresh mushrooms and rocket @bidonbistro after a 4:40 min ride at the cradle makes me...

The eggs benedict is simply out of this world! The blankets on a cold winter's morning much appreciated! Wonderful place to stop for a breakfast!
Manuel
First visit. I ordered the pumpkin feta fritters with poached eggs. What a disappointment. Feta was non-existent and the fritters were deep fried in old oil. The eggs tasted sour. The service, (if you can call it that), was non- existent. I ordered a cappuccino which was served ice cold. I asked for my bill and when it was presented I noticed that despite me not eating my meal I was still charged. When I questioned the waiter he ran off. A few minutes later 'the owner'..... "guns blazing and all"... approached me and questioned what the problem was. I was taken aback by his attitude as he was not accommodating to my criticism, to the degree that his manager actually pulled him away. Big disappointment......!!!
Layla Morris
Lovely atmosphere, lovely food, lovely people. Only thing that was disappointing was the service. Would definitely go back. Try the coffee milkshake it's amazing!
Faye Darby
I regularly stop here for coffee on my weekend cycles.. excellent buffet breakfast and coffee but that's not where it ends. The pizza is to die for and I recently had fathers day there. The food was breathtaking not only in taste but price.

This place is a must for a special occasion and for causal outing. The food was mind blowing and tantalisingly amazing :)

The settling is amazingly tranquil in the country side and furthermore relaxing. I strongly recommend you make a stop for coffee or a pizza.
Dilene Cranna
What a great spot if you just want to get out of the hustle for a delicious meal and a few drinks. Portions are generous and I have to mention the divine cheesecake I had as dessert. Friendly serves rounded off the perfect experience
Carmen Botha
This is a great spot to just break away a bit! It is open and cozi at the same time! Bring your doggies, and at 4pm you might meet the big pig Leighroy! P.S bring your own wine... No corkage

At last a spot that understands it's cycling fraternity
Great country setting and attention to detail.
At first the coffee at bidon was horrendous, however they listened and have changed suppliers and trained their baristas, and the results are noticed and appreciated.
Unlike all the other cycling joints who assume the cyclist fraternity are happy with prison food Bidon serves a great choice of well cooked and presented food.
The attention to detail for the chill of winter is nice warm blankets for the ladies and the management are always on hand to assist patrons.
Don't drop your game and your future in the cradle is going to grow in leaps and bounds.
Looking forward to my next visit.
Thank you
