Their food is incredibly tasty, portion sizes are really decent and this quaint little hole in the wall is dynamite!
Aaagh just simply the BEST!!! Their sweet and sour pork and chicken with cashewnuts...word cannot describe. Big portions and really very well prepared dishes. I don't know what sauce they make their noodles in...but oh man it's good!!

As always the shredded pork, ginger and chilli, as well as the hot and sour soup were a winner! Delivery was quick as always. I thoroughly enjoyed my choices although I did think the chicken cashew was a bit bland and the chicken over cooked. I've had it before where it was soft and super tasty. Hopefully it will be the same as my first experience next time next time!
Hands-down, my favourite Friday takeaway option. Monk's crispy ginger chicken is actually to die for. I've ordered it about 100 times, and it's hitting excellence 90% of the time. The chilli soy cabbage is also kinda mind-blowing. You will not regret filling up here! Five stars for addictive Chinese deliciousness :)
Monk’s delivers, which is great for those nights you just want to stay in and be a couch potato. The food is really good and the egg fried rice is probably the best I’ve had! Dishes require a separate order of noodles/rice, which isn’t necessarily friendly on the pocket. But the food is worth it, especially if you want to treat yourself to a delicious takeaway!

Delicious generous portion size Chinese takeout. Nice fresh ingredients that aren't over cooked.
Call ahead to order and either have it delivered or collect. Waiting time to collect was 30 minutes and to deliver 1 hour 20 minutes.
My go to meal is pork egg fried rice and sweet and sour pork - so soft and good.
I found their chow mein to be oily on more than one occasion though...

Probably one of the best Chinese takeaway I've ever had. Delicious chicken in oyster sauce with mushroom. Yum! So delicious and the portions are large. My colleagues ordered the crispy pork and ginger which they loved. We all ordered egg fried rice as the extra side. Really impressive Chinese food.

Delicious, very generously portioned Chinese takeout- perfect for a cosy night in! They work on the same system as Butlers, where they don't have an actual sit down restaurant section, but rather a pick up/delivery system. Food comes in the normal Chinese boxes with chopsticks, and is filled to the brim. I had the sweet and sour chicken with 1 side of noodles, which fed me for a very hearty full TWO meals! We opted to go order and collect at the shop, but despite the said 'max 20 minute waiting time', we waited a solid 35. Was worth the wait, but would definitely recommend ordering in. There's only so many times you can sit and read their comical restaurant history printed on the wall.

The quickest and easiest place to order Chinese take away from. I've had my order delivered within 15 minutes sometimes!
Strangely, my favourite item on the menu is the vegetarian chow mein. It's so cheap, not to mention the portion is mighty large. It can easily be eaten over two meals! They use a delicious stir fry sauce, which I just can't pin down but it's a little smokey (hence different to other Chinese take away places). Their noodles are also very delicious.
The delivery staff are always friendly and helpful.
The best! Outstanding Chinese fast food - cannot be beaten in Cape Town. Dependable and quick. NOT for the health-conscious but that's not why you want it! The pork fried rice, crispy beef, and Chilli chicken are our highlights!

I recently discovered this place and honestly I don't know why it took me so long to try it. The service is amazing, their home delivery is the best that I've ever had, especially their online delivery. Everything is so efficient! The prices aren't too bad and it's free delivery so that's great. Oh! And the crispy duck and pancakes is to die for

Ordered in a couple days ago. The order placed telephonically was efficient coupled with timeous delivery. We ordered the crispy beef and chicken with ginger and chilli with a side order of egg friend rice. The portions were large and very tasty, with the added benefit of not being too greasy. Will be ordering again when I'm craving Chinese!

I waited in great anticipation for these little boxes of Chinese goodness to arrive - and I was certainly not disappointed. I thought about their sticky beef for days afterwards. The only downside is that it did take a little longer than I expected and it's not entirely budget friendly but man, oh man, is it worth it!
I don't know what is wrong with some of these reviewers! Clearly Monk's is basically the best Chinese take-out in Cape Town. Rating it well and giving it a 3.0 is not good rating convention. Even a take-out should be able to achieve a 5.0.
I do however agree that the delivery time is poor and needs improvement - but I don't think that alone warrants more than 20% off the total rating.
The food was delicious, and I loved getting the fortune cookies with my order. However, the order was stuffed up and my food was 1.5 hours late, despite living only a few blocks from the restaurant. They were very apologetic and were able to send me my food shortly after following up. Will probably try them again, but hope the service is better so that I can give them the rating they probably deserve. Update: Tried them a second time and food was ready for pick-up at the time given. Tasty as ever. Hopefully my initial bad experience was a once off.
You should definitely have Monk's number and menu on your fridge! They get Chinese take out so right! The food is well-priced, and always arrives hot and on time. I highly recommend the crispy beef with a side of egg fried rice, or the duck pancakes.
So I found my new favourite take away! Order was placed online an ready in a jiffy, they can deliver too. I had sweet and sour pork with egg fried rice and it was wonderful. I lookforward to my next order.
Pricy but absolutely scrumptious and addictive.
Monk's is certainly my go-to takeaway when it's a lazy night at home or rainy outside. The trick is to order before the mad dinner rush (so before 7pm) cos then it does take an hour or more to get your food.
However, the wait is always worth it!
I am in love with their crispy ginger pork either with egg fried rice or smoky noodles (best noodles I have tasted), both sides are perfect. Their veg options are extensive and fantastic, having tried the veg and cashew nut with noodles my friend ordered.
As a starter, their hot and sour soup is revitalising with rich flavour and tender tofu pieces. I wish I could branch out more with the menu but I am too attached to my order!
Their portions are also extremely generous and it adds to the fun that the food comes in takeaway paper Chinese boxes.

Always happy with Monk's! It's the 2nd time we ordered online from the Monk's Mowbray outlet and as before the food was scrumptious! Big portions and great price. Both times our food arrived with in the timeframe. Very happy :)
I've only ever had take-out from Monk's, but I'm quite sure one of their best features is that their take-out comes in boxes. There's a great variety of veggie meals, and they have a pretty good combo deal for two that will feed you twice. The food is yum! Sticky and delicious :)

I ordered the crispy duck with hoisin sauce and pancakes. It arrived within the specified time and I couldn't wait to chow down. The smell of the food was euphoric and had me salivating before the first bite. The meal was outstanding and delicious. I will be back for more.
I love a good Chinese take out and this spot is no exception! After the delivery guy knocked on my door, I grabbed him for a photo. I was in my gown after settling down for the night. I was starved. It didn't matter how he felt at the time (don't worry, he got well tipped). It was all about me and the great gifts and Chinese food he came bearing. Yum yum! I had the beef and oyster sauce with egg fried rice which was delicious. I recommend. Finished off with a chocolate mouse, which wouldn't be my choice if ordering dessert in a restuarant, but it was very nice for a take out style dessert. This Zomato Surprise was great and just what I needed on a Tuesday night. There was so much food that my wife had some, and I had a small plate the next day for lunch. Now that is #winning! All in all, a great night in with a balled headed Monk (not the delivery guy). I will be ordering this delicious Chinese once again...soonest. :)
The Chinese here is exceptional! I really recommend it. I had the cashew vegetarian dish and my brother had the sweet and sour pork. He isn't a hugger but he was so thrilled with his meal that I got a full on ten second hug!
Don't expect to grab a seat, unless it's on the huge couch while you await your order. The massive story on the wall makes up for the momentary discomfort and once you've gotten cosy at home or varsity or work with your Monks meal, you'll get over the initial annoyance of not being able to sit there and eat.
In fact, the magic of the Monks dining experience is that there is not really one. It really is just good ol' Hollywood-esque Chinese take-a-ways.
I had heard about Monk's Chinese but never really tried it before. Till one cold evening at my apartment where I was craving good Chinese takeouts. That rarely happens by the way, anyhow I went online to check out the menu and decided to try out their crispy beef with BBQ sauce.
Oh my word it's so good! Like I wanna order Monk's Chinese tomorrow again GOOD! Top it off with a fried egg and you got a great (leftovers) lunch to nibble on the next day.
It's Efficient, quick and tasty Chinese food. Trust me I'd tell you if it was awful!

Food has a really unique smokey taste very original! Take outs only but they do delivers which is great , staff is really friendly too, their packing is so cool and neat as well ! Love the food !!
Got an absolutely scrumptious takeaway from Monks- a crispy pork dish with soft fluffy rice. The pork was perfectly cooked and coated in a sticky, sweet sauce that popped with fresh bites of ginger. Best Chinese takeout I've had in Cape Town!

Chinese food not in polystyrene and delivered to your door can only be awesome! Read some great reviews and decided to get some for myself tonight, and boy, am I glad! I ordered the crispy ginger pork with a side of egg fried rice - not exactly crispy as other foodies have pointed out - but nonetheless, super tasty! Very fast delivery, and because I used SnapScan to pay, I got a whole bunch of complimentary fortune cookies. The more fortune, the better! Thanks, Monk's.
Oh my goooodness, I just ate the most delish Chinese food I've had in a long, long time. Salmon and tuna rainbow rolls to start (fresh, flavourful, better than many sushi spots I've visited lately), followed by beef in oyster sauce with fried rice. I love that there were big juicy mushrooms in the main dish, and that the sauce wasn't too salty (usually something I struggle with). I'm typically a sweet and sour pork gal but this experience may have changed me. We ended the meal with banana and chocolate spring rolls and although I managed to cover myself in the gooey filling, it didn't matter because I was at home in my pjs on the couch. Can't wait to try some of the other items on the menu!

Mmmmonk's is great. Yummy Asian fusion that warms you to your core! The banana and chocolate spring rolls are super tasty. The beef in oyster sauce is amazing very warm filling and unpretentious - perfect for a cold winter night.
This is our go-to delivery joint. The crispy ginger pork is amazing and you get to listen to the fresh prince of belair theme song while you wait. I'd say the only downside is that it's so popular the wait times can be a bit long.
The food was at my door step in the blink of an eye. Quick,swift and reliable. Compared to butlers they could improve on dress code. Ordered the sweet and sour chicken and fried rice. Great meal although they could ease up on the onions and pepper. All in all its worth the buy.
Eating Chinese food out of a box is pretty high up on my bucket list of "cool things to do that I saw on TV". Thanks Monks for making that possible.

We ordered the crispy ginger pork and the chilli and peanut beef with a side of egg fried rice. Both were super tasty. I would have liked the crispy pork to be a little more crispy but the flavours were good and the food was fresh. Delivery was about 45 min which isn't too bad and our food was hot when it arrived.
I have my eye on a crispy duck pancakes next so watch this space. I'm drooling as I type....

The perfect "I have nowhere in particular to be" take away... It's in Mowbray, which makes it perfect for UCT students and they really encourage you to Order in rather than go to them... It really doesn't get any better.

So tasty! And the portions are fairly big, definitely worth it. They also deliver independently if you order directly on their website. Very convenient if you don't have access to Mr D or UberEats.
I always try other Chinese places and I always find myself comparing to Monk's. Monk's has the best tasting as well as most convenient, where you can have it delivered by friendly drivers or call in advance and collect where it will be ready in as quick as 15mins on most days and even get dessert!. Now that they have introduced sushi, it is even better!
Great Chinese food and good value too. I'll definitely be exploring their menu in future. Delivery time took a little longer than I'd have expected (49 min), but not a problem because it was worth the wait and I'll just keep this in mind for next time. Hěn hǎo. Xièxiè
I've only ordered delivered take away which is free if you're in the area! The food is absolutely excellent, and is always delivered piping hot and comes in the Chinese takeaway cartons one sees on TV which just makes me happy. May take a bit long at times, but is worth the wait.
Decent food at affordable prices. I quite like the sweet and sour chicken and the chicken or beef with chilli and peanuts. They do have specials during the week. Good option for take-out and they offer free delivery in surrounding areas.
Monks Chinese concept is brilliant. It is by far the most convenient and delicious Chinese Takeaway in Cape Town. Sometimes certain dishes are unavailable but that's what happens when you are popular. Be warned though, their portions are made for 2 people or someone with the munchies.
New favorite place for chinese, they specialise in deliveries but they do have a walk in. The Chow Mein, Egg Fried Rice, Crispy Spicy Pork, Garlic and Ginger Chicken are all great options. While most fast food chinese places are overly salted. Monks is just right, fresh flavours and ingredients perfectly seasoned.
Monks Chinese is only available for takeaway. The food is slightly pricey for Chinese takeaway however, it is incredibly tasty. You can find typical Chinese dishes in the menu. I would recommend the sweet and sour pork with noodles.
A genius take-away restaurant for the ages! Ordered the Kingklip and some other meals for a fancy get-together and it absolutely blew the guests away; one guy was from the UK and said that he had never had better fish in his life haha. And he was about 70! He thought it was gourmet! But thanks Monk's - always exceptional quality, always on time (99% of the time, all the time) - and always willing to go the extra mile and serve goddam great Chinese food. Keep at it gang! Love it.
