Review The Salt Yard - Mowbray

Zoey Malcolm
This lovely little Italian restaurant sits in the heart of trendy Mowbray and is open pretty much all day. Their menu includes pastas, pizzas, steaks and grills, seafood, as well as my personal favorite, chunky beef burgers with curly fries. They have a number of beers, spirits and cocktails on offer. The atmosphere is relaxing and staff are incredibly helpful. Everything in the restaurant is made from recycled material, including the tables, chairs and decor, giving this little gem a unique signature.

Went here for lunch with some colleagues. Food was delicious, well prepared and had good portions sizes. Had to wait a bit but nothing too unreasonable. Will definitely go again.

This fantastic little place is a true hidden gem. Superb service and decent prices. A fantastic place to have an Italian style evening with a separate cash bar for those who want to drink the night away!

What a lovely experience. Good food and service. We came on a Sunday afternoon and were greeted by the friendly manager and shown to our table. I had the baby chicken. It was very, very good. I will definitely be back... soon.

Great looking restaurant with friendly and efficient service. Great craft beers to compliment the awesome food they serve.

Great food. Excellent portion sizes. Prepare to wait for 35-45 minutes, so not great for a lunchtime bite.

Had a wonderful time. Very good food. Only thing was the noise from the street and drunken patrons
Sean Greyling
Excellent burgers. Best curly fries ever. Cool chilled vibe.

One of the best hidden gems in Cape Town. Great food, craft beer and always a good vibe

A good place to eat! The food is pretty alright, and the interior vibe of the place is nice. They have gluten-free crust options for their pizza which is great! TVs show whatever sports game is playing at the time which is nice. The only problem is that the food portions are pretty small here for what you are paying for.

So the drinks we perfect! they make some good cocktails. However the food was mediocre, my medium rare steak was well done and their second attempt was rare and cold. The service was average. I do think their drinks are worth coming for BUT FOOD is another ball game that they need to get right.

The food was good for the price you pay. The service was excellent and I think if anything brought me back it would be that! Overall a very pleasant casual Sunday night dinner experience.

The decor of the restaurant is great- very rustic. Wasn't too impressed however, when we were given dirty and coffee stained menus. The prices of the food is quite high so I was expecting some good quality ingredients to be used in the meals. I ordered a burger with a large crumbed mushroom on the burger patty and my boyfriend ordered the miss piggy pizza. The portion size was good but I was a bit dissapointed with the food. The pizza was good however the base seemed like a frozen one you can buy at the shop opposed to a freshly made one. The burger was a bit bland but I really enjoyed the sides that came with it.

Have been there before. Went for a quick Sunday lunch. Service excellent but unfortunately burgers were cold and tasteless. Also prices were nearly 20% more than the menu prices advertised on the Zomato site. 😑
We went over for a quiet meal just before the kitchen closed and to our suprise, the food was immaculate.
Considering the imminent closing of the kitchen, we expected half hearted meals, but we received nothing but incredible food!
Also a huge shoutout to Paolo, who served us with a huge smile and made sure the service was as speedy as possible

What a Little Gem!!!
Did not expect much when we arrived but Wow were we surprised when the food arrived!
We ordered Fillet with curly fries, Gatsby Burger, Spaghetti Bolognese, Snob (creamy chicken tagliatelle), Vegetable Patch Pizza and the Piazza Pizza. @tyla dayle jansen @bradley Johns
Everything was perfection. I will most definitely be going back there for more.
Nice rustic ambiance too.

My favourite calamari in Cape Town! Their sauces and flavours are amazing here, and I love their curly fries. They also do a good milkshake. The only average meal I've had here was the vegetarian pizza, as it was a little bland. But other than that, I would definitely recommend The Salt Yard at any time of day.

Good food, great atmosphere, service was good and staff were very friendly, smooth and well oiled machine of a bar. Would highly recommend to anyone.

I had the pizza burger and curly fries. Not knowing what to expect, I was impressed by how it looked and tasted. The burger was massive and I could only finish half of it. The food prices are quite cheap.

The service was amazing. Didn't wait long for our food and our waiter was extremely friendly.
Will definitely be visiting soon. 😁

Pros:
1. Good food
2. Affordable
3. Nice ambience

Cons:
1. Can get noisy at times especially if you're seated in the diner and there are people drinking at the bar next door
2. Pizzas are average

Quite a cool little spot, owner and son managed, has a great vibe, frequented by locals and naturally the local watering hole. Food is reasonably good, quality of ingredients used is not great and should they improve on that the quality of food can only get better, reasonably priced and certainly worth a evening out for a few pints with some mates and maybe a bite or two.

Love the ambiance and the service. Awesome food and cocktails perfect for every mood. Must visit this place. One of the best I have visited on Capentown.

Local is lekker! This little place has one of the best meaty burgers in town. Grilled the way you like it, yes they get MR perfecto!) and served on a sesame bun with a secret sauce and salad or curly fries. I can recommend adding a side of of their excellent pepper sauce as a treat! Also love their yummy starter chicken livers peri peri. Always intend to try other things on the menu but for some reason I cave in to my known faves. Service is relaxed, friendly and efficient. Waiters I've had know their menu - a thing so many establishments fail to insist. Move on to the festive bar after dining and meet the locals. Something about the place reminds me a bit of the Cheers tv show! πŸ˜ƒ All round really good food, good value and vibey comfy ambiance. Next up from the menu for me this winter: the ribs, the mussel pot and the Greek (fillet pasta - sounds yummy!), prawns, eggs benny for brekky perhaps. Suits couples, families, friends, parties and even just grabbing a quick bite on your own on your way home from work. πŸ‘¨β€πŸ³πŸ”πŸπŸ•πŸ³πŸ₯“πŸ€πŸ₯—πŸ₯‘πŸ·πŸ»πŸ‘©β€πŸ³

My first time to this restaurant in my area and I was most impressed. The prices are good, the helping are not large but adequate. Β The staff were very friendly, helpful and attentive. The ambiance is wonderful. Parking available and really a nice vibe. As it is in my area I will certainly Β be back soon.
Keep up the good standard. How about a Pub Quizz evening every now and then. Its great fun and would be a good venue.

I really adore this place... I find this place to have a lovely atmosphere with a unique twist. Of course the very first drink I always ask for is their famous candyfloss cocktail. It tastes sooo amazing, it is so yummy! I love it! Another thing I love is the fact that they can do any of their cocktails in a virgin cocktail form, I dont drink so this works out perfectly for me! The service there is always good and the staff is very friendly. Over all a really cool vibe and a awesome place to grab some pizza and drinks while chilling and catching up with your friends.

Cosy local eatery. Nice vibe. Cute rustic Italian decor. Friendly staff. I had the chicken prego sandwich, which was a generous portion with heaps of long, curly fries but the prego sauce was fairly boring :/. My friend had a tomato based pasta - she added bacon. Throughout our lunch she kept seasoning it with salt and pepper. I'll give them another try though.

βœ”οΈ loved the decor
βœ–οΈ staff were like deer in the headlights when it came to orders and enquiries
βœ–οΈ waiting more than an hour for our food
βœ–οΈ the focaccia - out of 3 ordered - only 1 had garlic and seasoning
βœ”οΈ the fig and goats cheese burger was super tasty (with the bun and without the bun)
βœ”οΈ curly fries were great
βœ”οΈfood was tasty though
βž–undecided if we will be back if we have to wait so long for our food on a Wednesday night

I've tried several of their gourmet burgers, their ribs, grilled calamari and salad selection. I've never been disappointed with the food. Good service, decent coffee and shabby chic / vintage rustic decor for a relaxed atmosphere.
Really good food and very generous portions. We enjoyed the mussel pot and garlic bread; fillet with chimichurri sauce, sticky pork ribs, and a mushroom burger...all served with skinny curly fries. Saw someone at the next table with an enormous portion of battered fish- looked like 3 pieces- so they certainly don't skimp on portions.

Very laid back vibe with good reggae music and a separate smoking section . A friendly Manager/owner checked on us and seemed very hands on..

It is a bit noisy during the day though with all the busses and taxis thundering by so I would recommend it more as an evening venue.

Popped in for a lunch to delay an airport wait. Great vibe in a Sunday with live music, friendly service and tasty food. Layed back vibe. Give it a visit

We were a large group celebrating a birthday, so the cocktail menu was thoroughly tested, and was found to be excellent. As well as the classics, there are a number of more unusual flavours, which were a hit, and none of them overly sweet.
They have a decent selection of food, pizzas were decent, ribs and burgers thoroughly enjoyed.
A great spot for dinner or to meet up for drinks.

When in need of an after work drink, this is the place to be. Casual vibe with feel-food food and great cocktails.

Atmosphere is laid-back with quirky things on the walls and mismatched chairs to add to the ambience.

Their menu consists of anything from breakfast and pizza to burgers and pizza with an interesting cocktail menu. I went for an ice cold, refreshing cocktail - Clockwork apricot. It is premium gin and nettari apricot spun frozen served with fresh orange and lemon, along with a dash of aromatic bitters.

We enjoyed a foccacia bread to snack on and enjoyed along with our drinks. It is light and flavoursome with herbs, garlic and fresh basil for a delicious italian bread.

Parking can be difficult to get especially when a place like this gets so busy and packed. A great place, after that first sip of the cocktail it makes the visit all worthwhile!
Best burger , best music, best attention by owner , best pizza. Worth a drive even if you not a local. If you want something that's not Mexican .. walk across the road for cold tequila and a massive indoor smoking section:)

Ooooolalaaa! This fabulous liked spot opposite The Fat Cactus in Mowbray is definitely a hidden gem!
Wonderful little menu offering burgers, salads, pizza etc. Love that the burgers come with chips and not as an additional cost (which seems to be the trend nowadays).
The have a suitable list of cocktails (tall and short) at decent prices a well as wines and craft beer.
We didn't make a reservation so could only stay for cocktails as they were completely booked. Tells you something...

I had a Swedish house mafia mule (lime, cardamom, ginger beer, bitters, absolut raspberry and nettari strawberry) which was strong and delicious.

Sharese Hunt Glen Hunt BigJoe

Hands down the best cocktails I've ever had. There are no shortcuts taken in this bar - you want orange juice, they make it fresh right in front of you. Definitely try the clockwork apricot - it's absolutely delicious.

The restaurant is a cool looking place that accompanies great food. The Hamburgers are tasty will a nice sized beef patty!! They also have an awesome Belgian ale craft beer.

We (family of 5) visited the salt yard on a Friday evening without a booking. Because we where early we were able to get a table that was reserved from 19h30 onwards. The menu has a good selection of food. The pizza we ordered was very nice. the burgers looked amazing and the steak roll was scrumptious. The chips served do accompany the food well. The only thing I did not like was that the waiter started to get pushy at 7pm to get us to finish our food. The reservation was only for 7h30 pm so we did not like the fact that all the sudden we were constantly asked if we had finished. Otherwise, we should not have been given the table.

Really good food, great staff and awesome little hidden gem in Mowbray. Difficult to find parking. But promise its all worth it when you try one of their delicious burgers. Try the cheese burger, the bunless option is just as delicious.
Love the decor!
Great job guys

We decided to check out this new restaurant in Mowbray.Their service is good and their food is delisious! They also have very unique cocktails and they serve churros for dessert which is awesome :) !

Was really impressed by the food and service. Great prices! Awesome menu. I love the vibe this place exudes. Ordered a regina pizza which ticked all the boxes. Nice and cheesy and thin base. Great size because it was super filing πŸ• My friends ordered the Prego steak roll, unfortunately they found the cut of meat quite chewy. So perhaps they need to look at where their meat is being supplied from. πŸ–

Overall great experience. We could have stayed all night and partied with the free shots they were handing out. It was fun! 🍷🍹

Really nice cocktails wow wow πŸ™πŸ™ I had one of the frozen drinks, so nice. If I'm going back, I'm buying more cocktails. it's a really nice space, beautiful spot. And the service was great. I had so much fun.

Really enjoyed the atmosphere here, the food is also good but not wow though. But all in all I like this place, it is not pretentious :)

We started off with cocktail, apparently BumbleBee was a winner, CandyFloss looks better than its taste. I can't remember what cocktail I ordered, it didn't look good and tasted like cough syrup. NOTE TO SELF, DON'T ORDER ANYTHING WITH RASPBERRY SYRUP .

The mussel pot as starter wasn't enough, mussels were a bit too baby size, but the white sauce was really nice, I think they put in dill. Yum!

For main, I had goat cheese and fig preserve burger, I know! Mouth-watering right?! My vegetarian friend had a mushroom burger, but she was hoping it was a gigantic juicy piece of portabello mushroom soaked up with all the sauce, unfortunately it was not.

Service can be improved, like be more attentive and, very important, don't bring the wine when the dinner is almost finished...! I know you guys were very busy that night! So I let you go this time, but not again!

Brunch at the Salt Yard this morning. Classic eggs bennie is rated 10/10- served on English muffin, great quality ham, perfectly poached eggs and excellent hollandaise sauce. Dave had the Fig, goats cheese burger with curly fries. One of the best burgers in town - definitely going back for lunch next time. I had the basic breakfast R35 for 1 egg, 2 rashes of bacon and grilled tomato. Good Lattes. Excellent service. Funky decor.

Went back today 6-May-2017. My rating stays the same - enjoyed the food.
