Review Mossel Bay Oyster Bar - Mossel Bay

Michael Mentz
**Review of Oyster Bar in Mosselbay** **Menu Overview:** The Oyster Bar in Mosselbay offers a concise yet delightful menu, primarily focusing on seafood. The highlight is undoubtedly their local oysters, which are exceptionally fresh and flavorful. While their sushi is also fresh and well-prepared, the variety is somewhat limited compared to other seafood establishments in the area. **Ambiance and Seating:** Arriving at 5:30 PM without a reservation, we were pleasantly able to choose a table with a stunning outdoor view. However, by 6:00 PM, the restaurant was fully occupied, indicating its popularity. **Food Experience:** The oysters were served swiftly, showcasing their freshness. On the other hand, the sushi preparation took longer than expected. We were informed about the delay after a considerable wait, which was a bit disappointing. **Service:** The staff was consistently friendly throughout our visit. They patiently assisted numerous guests with photographs against the scenic backdrop of the bay. Additionally, they provided the Wi-Fi password upon request. **Additional Notes:** There's ample parking available in a complimentary parking lot adjacent to the restaurant. **Overall Impression:** Despite the wait for sushi, the quality of the food was high, and the service was commendable. The Oyster Bar is a must-visit for its fresh local oysters and the breathtaking view of the bay.

A setting like this will definitely not easily be beaten. And to top it all the oysters and the sushi are absolutely great, as well as the lady who attended to us.

Lovely place. Amazing view! Not overly priced especially for the view you get. Food-wise: tastes great BUT I've had better.

I have a personal preference and love for this tiny restaurant situated in the Mosselbay Harbor. Over the many years that we have been visiting it had rejuvenated itself many times by improving the ambience and menu. From just having oysters, sushi and bubbly they now offer a few fish dishes, wine, beer on tap and can you believe it - gin on tap, which was delicious by the way. I had tempura prawns and my partner sushi which we loved. Our waiter was friendly and introduced us to a few alternatives on the drinks menu. But what make me come back time and time again is the ambience and amazing view. Sitting there on the open narrow deck, on red chairs and surrounded by white tables and umbrellas overlooking the sparkling blue bay is the best ever. It reminds one of sitting in a taverna on a Greek island overlooking the sea - but better! I can really recommend that you visit and being there around sunset, is even more spectacular.

Lovely outside seating with the most gorgeous view of the ocean. The food was delicious, especially the hamburger and hake. The fries are fantastic. Recommend this place if you want to have a relaxing meal while looking at the ocean.

Loveeeeee the bake and calamari combo. The fish was so fresh and even the batter was surprisingly tasty... usually I don’t like fried food but they know how to make a good quality fried fish and it didn’t taste greasy at all. Salmon sashimi and oyster were also very delicious. It was my favorite part of Mossel bay

Such a joy spending time at this place. Great friendly staff, some of the best sushi and gin tasting, what more can one ask for really? Superb!!

Best oysters I’ve ever had, HUGE! Medium oysters bigger than an iPhone! Great views watching dolphins play in the bay.

Been here a few times for oysters and sushi. Always delightful. Oyster are top notch and very tasty. You always get more than you pay for. Cocktail are nice as well. Would recommend.

I sat and marvelled at the view and thought...wow this place can really do so much better if they concentrated on customer service. Although staff is friendly they lack hugely in restuarant expertise. I suggest sending staff on training as not only my table but table behind mine also complained. Waiting forever to get a bill...waiting for drinks ect...no feedback. Food and ambience is great...brush up with professional service and this will be the spot in Mossel Bay.

We had a awesome time. Great view, excellent and friendly service. Great food and cocktails. For sure the best calamari ever. Best value for money on calamari.

Was really excited to go have lunch at the Oyster Bar, but walked out very disappointed and hungry. There are only two waiters of which only one ( the boy) seems to only work. The other (girl) stands by the bar area talking to other girl behide the bar. We orders oysters, but never received them, so we decided to go somewhere else. Never in my life have I seen a place with so much potential, but such bad service. I will never recommend this place to any of my friends or family visiting, nor would I go there myself again.

We enjoyed it, waitress's (Amber we think) service was great, oysters and sushi was good and the view and feeling of the place is just great. Thank you . . .

Stunning view, great cocktails and good sushi! We actually came for oysters, just a shame you had to pay R25 for a 'medium' oyster that ended up being smaller than cocktail size!🤔

Staff is extremly rude and unhelpful. No sense of mutual respect especially by management during the festive season. Didn't even make it inside before being basically chased away, sad because it's such a lovely place and setting. Real let down.

Great place great view good service loved it. Fresh fish & Chips can mostly only be right on the harbour. See you soon.

We went here for sushi. 3 crappy, old salmon "roses" for R75? We were pretty much ignored most of the time we were there and weren't even given ginger or wasabi. Never in my life have I felt so robbed... definitely will not be back...

Imagine running out of calamari! Totally unacceptable. It's December get it together please!

I don't know why this place got such a low rating. I think it was good. Only been there once. It is a bit expensive but right on the sea. Food was good

The place has a good location with gorgeous sea views but what a shit menu. Only oysters and sushi, nothing else. You would think that being a place that only offers 2 things that they would at least perfect them but no. The sushi was possibly the worst I've had. The rice was way too soggy and they overcompensated on the rice with not enough sushi. Overall not a great dining experience. Would not recommend.

I loved this quaint little restaurant. The sushi bar and interior is super modern which made for a nice change to all the 'rustic' restaurants nearby. We had sushi and fresh oysters which were delicious! The cocktail menu was also great and we had a lovely meal all round! I would definitely recommend this spot for a quick lunch!

What a wasted opportunity!
The location of this place is gorgeous! You sit right on the water and can watch the yachts and people snorkeling right below you!
But that's where the good kind of ends. We ordered cocktails. Three mimosas and a pink mojito. One of the mimosas was practically a glass of 'juice'. I say 'juice' because it's the horrible super sweet type that is usually marked "contains real juice" in the supermarket but doesn't resemble anything like real orange juice. We asked if the could add some more sparkling wine which they were happy to do but after that it seems our waitress was upset and never returned. The new drink arrived via a new waitress. The pink mojito that we ordered also arrived with her but was a clear green liquid with no signs of real lime or much mint. We asked the waitress to swop this as well. The 'new' mojito arrived via a third waitress. I say 'new' because I'm pretty sure that they had just added a whole lot of pink syrup to the glass.
The sushi was also more of the Ocean Basket variety rather than the Willoughby's or Beluga level.

We asked for the bill and it was brought quickly by one of the waitresses, but it was clear that they had lost interest in us by now. We sat and waited for the credit card machine or a waitress but no one said that you had to pay as you leave.

Without being sarcastic, I REALLY believe that this place could be fantastic if they made real, quality cocktails as the location is brilliant. For now though, I would just order a bottle of wine and enjoy the view.

Quality: 1
Consistency: tbc
Food: na
Atmosphere: 4
Cleanliness: 4
Service: 1
Location: 5
Value: 1
Will I return? No
Comments:
Beautiful location and a great concept, but product & service failed to match. Cocktails were awful, like mix-n-drinks, had to send them back. Ordered mojitos which had no limes or any sign of fresh ingredients, only what I assume was green colourants put in it. Mimosas had horrible sweet flavored orange juice in it (not fresh). Sushi is over-priced. Actually everything is overpriced for the quality you get. If they want to make a success of this great looking little spot, then I suggest they get an experienced / trained bar person who knows how to make cocktails with real ingredients, play some music, get interested waitrons who want to work and do some tweaking on the menu. It's a great clean spot at an excellent location. But so is many places in Mossel Bay with better prices. I was also annoyed that the bill was brought to us with no mention that we had to settle it inside. We waited a long time and eventually had to go find a waitron which then only told us. I won't return.

I was so looking forward to cold oysters and good sushi. The place looks great but unfortunately it was a disappointment. Overpriced, oysters was not chilled and the variety of sushi bad. R650 for a couple later and not satisfied. R75 for 3 salmon roses.
Mark Edworthy
Well the place looks lovely, great concept and a beautiful view. We bought a couple of drinks and waited to be seated. Upon inspection of the menu and the sushi on the conveyor belt we decided to go elsewhere. The items are horribly overpriced, for example R75 for 3 salmon roses drenched in mayo with more rice than fish. It's also rather hot and some of those pieces on the belt look like they have been on there for a while. The sushi is covered with lids but there are lots and lots of flies everywhere so I can't vouch for what it looks like behind the counter.
Elaine Lahoud
By the look of it, this should have been a nice experience but what a disappointment. Unorganised, unprofessional and extremely over priced!!! Only serve sushi and oysters with a limited wine list and some cocktails which we had to send back because it tasted like cool drink. The other drinks were served in plastic cups because they ran out of clean glasses. Behind the sushi counter they boiled the rice on a two plate gas stove and you have to use the public toilets which is a disgrace as well. Not a nice night out and will NOT recommend this to anyone!
