Best samoosa's in JOZI value for money. Top customer service aswell
The Purple Lounge makes amazing bunnies and gives you extra gravy, which I love. Their bunnies are probably the best in Johannesburg. Their biryanis are tasty but sometimes a bit dry.
Have never been disappointed by the food. Always order takeaway. If you want authentic Durban-Indian dishes, then this is the place to go to.
This restaurant came recommended by an uncle so decided to give it a try. Was a little disappointed that they did not have some of the items I wanted to have. Ended up ordering the bean bunny chow and bean curry. It was delicious!! Would definitely go back again.
This has been my go to destination for bunny chow’s in the Johannesburg area for the last few years. There are many Indian restaurants serving bunnies in Johannesburg and especially Midrand though Purple Lounge have managed to consistently deliver quality curry always leaving you satisfied. The portions are generous and you are even given extra gravy. This owner run restaurant/take-away is a little gem and I would highly recommend it, especially for those a little home sick and missing Durban curry!
I have eaten from the purple lounge on a few occasions. This restaurant serves up the best mutton bunny in midrand. I highly doubt you could buy a better bunny in gauteng. Great job guys!! Keep it up!!
Had a function catered by the Purple Lounge. The service and setup at home was professional, they were on time and well organised. The food was top notch and quality of ingredients used was superb. All the guests raved about the food.I will definitely use their services again.
We had lamb bunnies, burgers and beans and trotters. The food was of excellent quality. Would recommend to anyone looking for Indian food, you won't be disappointed. And you receive very large portions and very good service. Will definitely go back.
Highly recommend...👌🏼👌🏼was referred by someone to come here and the bunny chows.
I had the lamb bunny and my husband had the sugar beans bunny ... both were amazing .. we had a warm durban welcome 😊they cater functions as well ... please be sure to visit this place
The real deal. Great tasting curry. The lamb bunny rocks for what you pay. An authentic Indian Curry place. Consistent after many visits here. Highly recommended.
Really wonderful indian food. I loved the experience here. Food comes out fast and it's delicious.
At first it was hard to find, but once I did it 2 as secure and the parking was enough for that day and time specifically.
The owners are friendly and polite. This place seems like a great lunch spot.
Today, my hunger took me across to Midrand where a colleague, who swears by The Purple Lounge in Midrand (and has been nagging me for weeks), finally convinced me that it was worth the drive. In short, it was. The Purple Lounge's motto is 'Just the way Amma makes it'.. and their Midrand branch is actually the main venue for this family restaurant.
Husband and wife team of twenty-eight years make a formidable curry match, and Strini Moodley prides himself on using only family recipes for all their cooking.
Onto the food:
The Purple Lounge's Friday special is the lamb and chicken breyani so we ordered one of each. This breyani includes both a salad and dhall with each order as a complimentary addition.
Then, after seeing the lamb curry on the menu, which consists of lamb leg meat (think no fat or rib bones) I couldn't resist ordering one of those to try with two of their freshly made rotis.
What a feast ensued and these are curries that Chef Deena Naidoo (of the masterchef fame) can be proud of!!
The prices: A flavour-filled curry in a decent portion here will set you back between R40 and R85. There is nothing better than getting what you paid for, except getting that value and only having to pay R60. Excellent value-for-money!
Did you know even the bunnies include salad and extra gravy if you'd like it with no extra charge?
What I like about these particular curries was that they were spicy and flavoursome without being overwhelmingly hot. Another point that makes a difference is that I am always impressed when the quality of meat is good and excludes the fat as its not a personal favourite of mine. The chicken curries they pride themselves on removing the skin and if you order the lamb curry it will firstly be boneless and secondly be leg meat.
*Recommendation: Whether its a craving for a good bunny or just a freshly made roti, the spice, flavour and price of this food is worth the drive to Midrand!! I cannot wait to return and try something else.

I have been craving a proper Durban style bunny chow for a while now... tried a few places but nothing seemed to hit the spot . My boyfriend even googled some places and eventually via Zomato and word of mouth came across Purple Lounge. We ordered their mutton bunny chows and was definitely not disappointed .There was no lack in taste, meat or gravy, infact ,they even give you extra gravy on the side to add if desired.Food was accompanied by salad and pickles at no extra cost. The owners treat you with proper Indian hospitality..felt good not to just be another customer. Some may say its pricey but I think its worth every tasty bite, after all ,we do live in JHB and a normal meal costs about the same ..only difference is, this is authentic Durban cuisine at its best ...YUM!
My partner was feeling for a bunny so we decided to take a drive to Midrand to try out a bunny from the Purple Lounge. The place isn't your typical Indian upmarket venue and although looks can be deceiving, the food is what spoke for itself. As it was a Sunday, it was quite quiet but slowly filled up closer to lunch time. We decided to get the boneless mutton bunnies with samoosa starters. Unfortunately we got the bunnies before the samoosas so we cancelled that order. The owners were also really friendly and helpful. Felt like I was having lunch in Durban :) The bunnies were fantastic! Loved it! The only problem though is that it was rather pricey i.e. R85. Although the food was tasty, this price doesn't seem to be justified. Regardless about the price though, we will probably be back in the future.
All I can say is that you will feel right at home. Simple no fuss but yet delicious food. All you can feel is positive energy when you walk through the door!
What a bunny. Flavourfull, soft meat. Good strenght. The best I've eaten. Pity it's so difficult to find. Not a bad thing though. It means u can always get a table. Oh and reasonably priced. Friendly management and staff.
Their 1/4 is more like 1/2 a bunny. Tasty, home cooked feeling. If you want a good heartfelt meal. Taste doesn't disappoint. Very obliging owner, family style
Not the greatest setting and a limited menu (according to the guy behind the counter at least). Famous for their mutton bunnies; apart from a slight shortage of meat it doesn't dissapoint. At R170 for two people it isn't cheap but it's as close to a Durban bunny as you're going to get.
Excellent experience with the food and service over the last few occasions I've visited, both sit in and take away. The mutton bunny was particularly good, would easily trump most Durban bunny joints, (which is high praise for a Johannesburg establishment). Note, order take away bunnies as deconstructed to ensure satisfaction.
I have always ordered on UberEATS and the food has been amazing! I was shocked reading the reviews as I always experienced consistent good food. My favorite is the bunny chow. It's the closest to a Durban bunny chow I've tasted since moving here. Meat is tender and flavorful. Price is definitely not cheaper than Durban but consistent with every other indian restaurant in Gauteng
If you need to top up on your Durbaness, this is a place to get a great bunny. Vegetarian available too.
Really really enjoyed the mutton bunny chow. Was so devine. It was a baby shower and the owner had catered other food. However after seeing the mutton bunny chow being served in the restaurant i had to have one. N omg it was amazing. I highly recommend it .if ur originally from Kzn and miss an authentic indian mutton curry i highly suggest this uncles bunny. A must try!!!!!! So devine.
Food was good, 👍
service was friendly,👏
Was not busy so didn't have to stress about social distancing.🙂
I would definately recommend the place.
They also into catering as well. I've included their menu with contact info just in case 😉
Authentic Durban takeaway. Had the mutton bunnies sit-in and they were the best I've had in Jhb. The owners were friendly and it felt homely. Not a fancy restaurant, an old school Durban Indian takeaway, plastic tablecloths, old pictures on the walls. Very nostalgic, simple menu done well. Very consistent as well.
Fantastic south Indian eatery and take away, catering in delicious curries breyanis, snacks (their lamb samoosas are divine!) and a smaller number of deserts. Service is good. Ambiance is mediocre. You are there to eat, not to enjoy the setting!!😉
Absolutely amazing food. Clean and neat. Definitely a place to re visit
My husband has been to the Purple Lounge on several occasions and loves the food. I went there for the first time today, to collect a take away order. I met with the owner Mr Strini Moodley, a very friendly gentleman. The restaurant was amazing, a lovely setup. The lamb samoosas are absolutely divine. We bought a mutton bunny and a chicken roti wrap, and also bought unfried samoosas. Mr Moodley added some veggie pickles and said that I should try it, and did not bill us for it. The food was divine. Cooked to perfection. I gladly recommend this restaurant and want to mention that the meat and chicken is halaal. I personally rate this restaurant a 10 out of 10. Thank you Mr Moodley for such delicious food and excellent personalised service.
Crab curry was on point, best I've had in a very long time, even had 2 portions! And they Halaal, amazing, will definitely be back, ready to try their bunny chow! Thanks alot!
Took mums & sis. They loved it their 1st time. Good ol Durban indian chows like Ma made in the kitchen. Mutton curry , chicken their dessert Soji etc all great taste straight outta durbs exactly what you want. Open on a Sunday too so perfect for a family lunch.
Decor not great just canteen seating. Dont expect a fancy restuarant but you know you will get great food. Husband & wife from Durban own it. Location in a commercial office centre. Very good prices. Joburgs slight mild alternative to the amazing Brittania in durbs for the char ous. Worth it.
Visited today for the first time. Enjoyed the food - never expected such a place existed in that part of Midrand. Was a quick visit - hope to spend a bit more time in future to sample the other food. Lamb bunny was good.
Food was yummy. Had a mutton curry. Place could do better with more help
