Review Hell's Kitchen - Melville

So good!!! The Nachos were the best, and our waitress was so kind. I also loved the setting, it felt very cosy and comfortable. I would highly recommend this place.

Whiskey , beer, wine and good pub food, what more can you ask for. Very attentive staff making sure your glass is always full. Good music played, so perfect place for a group in the main street of Melville
Ruairi Sheridan
Always a good vibe, great music, superb food and friendly service. Great venue with a wonderful soul - occasional live music and awesome DJ residencies too. Check out Thursday nights for a good rock vibe and end of the week shenanigans
JP Borman
One of my favourite bars in Johannesburg. It’s great to have an institution like this in Melville, and that it survived covid. Its a favourite local for so many. Keep on supporting the local music scene!
Caleb Whitmore
We came here as our first dinner stop during our Johannesburg visit. We arrived to the area during a “load shed” in which the electricity was out in the area. Hell’s Kitchen was open during this and was candle lit, with a couple lights and a generator for music. The food and drinks were fantastic and the service was excellent. Would highly recommend!

Great food, great music, great vibe. A gem in the heart of Melville. Get your fill of craft, beer, whisky and adult drinks, some great food and eclectic music. A definite must top try is the house whisky infused with cinnamon - Hell Fire

Absolutely stunning place. Great way to spend a Sunday

Can't be more greatful of the fun we had... basic menu but loved the vibe!!!
Londeka Asanda Gumede
Nice bar, great food. They have excellent service too.

For a great night out, no matter what day of the week or weekend, visit Hells Kitchen in Melville. Lovely bar, great menu (kitchen is open til 10) and great music selection. The staff are always super too and I always have a great time. Don't forget to try their signature whiskey shot, the Hellfire.
ZANDER VAN NIEKERK
Great atmosphere and music. The BAD ASS BABY BACK RIBS is a must. Big side portions and great tasting ribs.
Liam “Lemonhead” Cadger
Firstly I gotta give props to the guy behind the bar awesomely friendly helpful and awesome taste in vodka omg Baliga is my new favourite it was amazing!!! Lol any ways so we stayed for both sets the band was Rambling Bones they were way impressive and I never heard a single compliant, Only good things we had 3 different people serving our tables and all 3 were firstly so beautiful, very attentive and helpful working as a team clearing tables wonderful service A for effort. It is upper market at 100 +/- bucks a burger but!!! You get what you pay for the food looks amazing. I didn't eat but mostly everyone else did and said it was delicious. The group consensus was order the ribs or wings burger. The vibe is relaxed and casual bring about 250 - 500 with you for a full day of fantasic fun also... PLEASE IGNORE THE PARKING GAURDS THEY HOUND AND BEG AND TRY SELL DRUGS I WAS OFFERED WEED AND KAHT (CAT). WAS NOT IMPRESSED. (PLEASE NOTE THE GUARDS HAVE GOT NOTHING TO DO WITH THE BARS AND RESTAURANTS, SHOPS AND CAFES ALONG 7TH STREET AS FAR AS I KNOW)
Christina Gower
I love hells kitchen! The service is great, food is good. The area however is not great but that can't be blamed on the restaurant. The only thing I truly hate are the bathrooms because of my vertigo the floors and tiles in the cubicle make me sick immediately. But great vibe, definitely place to check out.
Siksha Sundarparsad
The food was delicious! Service was great. Weather was so good on the day we visited and was lovely sitting outdoors
Sieps Sipo
Perfect place to go for a proper grill & old school rock! Local beers on tap and Hell's Kitchen favourite Hell fire (Cinnamon flavoured whisky). Always good place for a good night out!
Ana Pavlovic
Always an absolute treat! Amazing music selection and rad staff that match vibe! Rock n' Roll, tattoos and great food can be expected!
Marlize Engelbrecht
Food and drinks were amazing. Especially the Nachos! Massive portion and nice taste. Great lively atmosphere. Only negative was the brunette bar lady, she has a negative and dismissive attitude and needs to work on her customer service skills.
Craig Colin Roy McLeod
So things you should know, The service is almost always terrible, the food is almost always amazing! The kitchen keeps odd times (this can be annoying), the Vibe is always great, the decor is awesome. You go here for the food and the vibe, not the service. Would still recommend you go though, it is well worth it. #HonestReview

I was just there for lunch, sort of. Quite a few menu items not available (understandable on a monday) though we weren't told when given menus, which took us sitting for 20 minutes to be given them (after asking). Our food took more than one hour and 15 minutes, after which I cancelled my order, I was offered one free beer, but really more than 75 minutes to get food, how would you rate a place? Horrible service, friendly, but horrible. Won't be back ever in a hurry
Matthew Evans
Great vibe. Tucked away in Melville with cool art, an awesome pressed moulding ceiling and some proper tucker! Sundays food special and music have been solid wins. A great recommend if you want to get out with mates and have a delicious meal with some good whisky.
Neill Pengilly
Normally only go there for a few drinks ... However must say the food was excellent and can recommend the king klip and the ribs ... Suitably impressed
Gareth Wilson
Had the Tomahawk yesterday and dare I say it was the nicest steak I have ever eaten. Chef Rayno still nr 1 in my heart.
Vivienne Bezuidenhout
Two words: hell fire! Other than that, I love the interior (especially the hidden room in the book case), the food is phenomenal in an unexpected kind of way, and we had such a friendly and funny waitress. Looking forward to my next visit already!

We have been working our backsides off for months without rest and decided to take a day out to chill, we wanted some good food and a great vibe, we ended up in Melville which is a fair shlep from where we stay. Anyway, walking up the street we saw a happening place with a live band, we went in and were immediately sucked into the vibe. The menu looked pretty decent so we decided to eat there and mein gott are we glad we did !!!!!!#$%^&*( I had the hot wings, talk about ring sting tomorrow morning and do I love ring sting. Total awesome experience, just what we needed, had a chat with Jono the owner and tasted his Hell Fire Whisky, it was so good I bought a bottle to take home. What a find, loved the obscure pics on the walls, it made our day and we will be going back for sure, I dont care how far it is from our place. Dont loose the vibe guys, you have the formula just right. Stevie, Daisy & Whitecloud

Love this place! The vibe, the people, the music 🎼 and the amazing food!
Cris Peirce
I would recommend to any travelers interested in great food and excellent service to try it out. I loved it and had a very good time:)
Michael DeBeer
Been there a few times. And every time the food was top notch and delicious. Loved the general vibe of the place. Will definitely be back ( and soon )
Nick Watt Pringle
Had a fabulous afternoon. The waitress was exceptional, food was good. Nice vibe. Will defiantly be back .
Garrick Stewart
Food overpriced for the portion size but the place doesn't suck
Yvonne Diogo
There was 1 waitress at dinner time. I ordered rump with salad... asked for olive oil, it never arrived. The rump was tough. I honestly don't recommend it. There is no service.
C.J. Jacobs
Great place to be with an awesome vibe, great variety of food and drinks, excellent service!
Philip Hulse
Wow! Thank you. The food is reasonably priced and tastes amazing! The service was fantastic, our waitress (Natasha) was just the right amount of attentive, friendly and professional all at once.
Nellson Mündela
Lucky and grateful that i discovered this place! One of the best bars in this world!!!
Julian Meyer
I really enjoyed my time here. We did not eat as we already ate a few doors down, but the service was unpretentious and genuine. Its a pity they did not cater for my friends wheelchair needs. The toilets were down stairs, so we had to find a tree outside. I really want to return on a weekend to experience the food as well as the busier vibe, although a Thursday night was peaceful and most enjoyable.....
Vuyolethu Sithatu
Great Service Experienced on the night. The Mussels were a great choice
Chelsea Geswint
An all round fantastic restaurant! They have a small food menu, but everything that we ate was absolutely delicious! my boyfriend and I ordered , the steak, ribs and spicy wings, everything was incredible, including the sides, (they hands down offer the best onion rings 😍) Despite the incredible food, the restaurant looks super cool! They have an enormous, well stocked bar and the most unique decor, we even sat next to a motor bike! Will definitely be going back very soon!
Alex Vorster
Six words . Deep fried macaroni and cheese balls. Best thing ever. Gin gin gin! From Blood orange to delicately flavored rose gin, they have it all. Hell's kitchen has become a favorite with our group of friends, the atmosphere and interesting mix of people guarantees a great night out. Whether you want to have a quick dinner and drink or a raucous party, this is the place to go.
Sashin Naidoo
An amazing joint! The decor is probably the coolest kind I’ve seen but the food is no disappoint! The BBQ wings are delicious, a generous portion might I add and accompanied with a side. I had the sweet potato wedges which was golden brown and crispy on the outside with its soft, sweet center. The staff are welcoming and friendly, the vibe is really good and lively. An ideal Sunday hangout for sure!
Smelly Celly
The best place to go for drinks and to listen to some awesome rock music. Their food is also very tasty and on Sundays they have lunch specials and live bands. Try the macaroni cheese balls as a starter! :)
Bulbul Shrivastava
I absolutely enjoy Hell’s Kitchen. As a vegetarian and even though there isn’t much to offer for vegetarians, they have some interesting dishes and I must say that I have enjoyed what they cater for vegetarians. The only area that I will complain about is the service. The service is extremely poor and slow. I have been to Hell’s Kitchen on numerous occasions and with different groups of friends. And I’ve sat inside and outside. Sometimes there won’t be anyone to welcome us. Sometimes I have to walk the inside to get a hold of my waiter. Sometimes I’ll ask for someone for a few number of times until they realize that I haven’t been served. I feel they pay attention to one part of the restaurant and ignore the rest of it. And this is why I’ll be rating it 1-star because I feel the service is a big part of restaurant.
Megz Mackintosh
I had the chipotle burger which was scrumptious! The chips were probably some of the best I’ve had! This place has such a cool vibe; definitely worth a visit!
Bradley Hodgson
Truthfully, it the worst experience I have ever had at a restaurant. The food took an hour and a half to 2 hours to arrive at which it was delivered in intervals of 15 minutes. Hence the first people to receive their food were done long before the last eventually cancelled their order because it took 2 hours to arrive. Upon trying to cancel the food, the waitress storms off saying she cant help us because it's being 'made'. The waitress was rude, upon querying the status of our food, she told us we only ordered 10 minutes ago when in reality we ordered an hour prior. The food that did arrive was incorrect at which the waitress told us that's what we ordered when in reality she got the order incorrect. Upon sorting things out with the manager, the waitress proceeded to individually speak to members of the table on the way to the toilet telling them that we shouldn't have spoken to the manager.<br/><br/>Would like to thank the manager for her assistance in the ordeal, she was very helpful.<br/><br/>Sad to say I and noone at the table will ever be returning.

If you go to Melville you have to pop by at Hell's kitchen some point of the night. The place has amazing music and the waiters are amazing. You have to try their Mac and cheese balls personally that my favourite. The decor is a sight to see and add to the whole vibe. The place is always fun even on a Tuesday.

8 Sep 2018<br/>Nice ambiance.<br/>Great service.<br/>Awesome party venue.<br/>Awesome music (bit loud though).<br/>Try the mac and cheese balls (needed a bit salt).<br/>Burgers with handmade patties and very tasty.<br/>Good honest bar food with no frills.<br/>Will be back.
Rhoneth
Waited over an hour for our meal which was eventually served stone cold. Ordered the lamb from the spit, really disappointing as it looks great while on the spit; it's actually not well seasoned and just not good. Potatoes were not cooked through and salad was horrible. Only go there for drinks... not their food. The atmosphere is nice.
Lukas
I visit this place so often I'm beginning to think I am bad with money. The HK burger is probably my favourite burger in Jo'burg and I struggle to order anything else because it's just that good. The decor and atmosphere is so awesome, I want my apartment to look like that! If you love beer, try the pale ale! Highly recommended!
Reginald B.
Off the normal path and a straight dive bar but man..what a great meal. So we planned to have the wings as an app but 8 whole wings and fries (from scratch) wound up being more than we could handle.<br/><br/>Dessert wound up being a griddle cornbread that tasted great. Literally a griddled cornbread that had down home cooking written all over it.<br/><br/>Great meal!
Radha Chhita-Nathoo
Not impressive at all. Food wasn’t good. Service very slow. Many other places in the area that I would much rather go to then here. Needs lots of TLC
Patrick Fullemann
I had the skillet fillet. The menu says medium rare only- which suits me fine- but what i got was almost well done. The sauce was dominated by smoked paprika flavour. No taste of basil or feta but it has a very nice heat to it. Happy wirh the side salad. Not bad overall. Lovely staff.

We went to Hell's Kitchen on Saturday for a ladies night. What a great time. Unfortunately, the power went off, but the staff did give me a call ahead of time as we had made a booking ... thank you for that. Even with the power off, the vibe was amazing, the service was friendly and efficient and we really had a most fantastic time. I will definitely be back, what a unique place.
Craig Nicholson
I ordered the Phat Boy with a side salad as I’m Banting. The pork belly was not like I’m used to as it is deep fried. Still delicious, especially the apple sauce. A bit pricey for a cheap cut of meat.<br/><br/>My wife ordered the soft taco shells with sides. She loved the cornbread and deep friend mac ‘n cheese balls.<br/><br/>The service was fantastic and we were in and out in an hour.<br/><br/>A great ambience and live bands round off a superb lunch.
Necia Valerie Ellis
Food was amazing! I can highly recommend the corn bread and the Mac n cheese balls. They also offer locally crafted beers and ice teas, and cater for vegetarians.
Lynne Jackson
Went here for my birthday, but was quite disappointed. Almost everything on the menu was sold out and the service wasn’t great either. Unfortunately I won’t be back for a second visit
Daniëlle Bezuidenhout
I’m so glad I’ve discovered this gem. Great atmosphere with a rock and roll vibe. The food is amazing and would definitively recommend their lamb burger. Also try their hellfire whisky cinnamon shot. It’s to die for!!
Gabriella Maxine Abrahams
I like this place for a night on the Hil but there food to me simply lacks the big bold flavors you need for pub grub. <br/><br/>I’m not sad if Hells is suggested for a night out but there are better pubs in this city.
Cayla Riley
Really love this Gem! The coolest vibe and decor , love every detail inside , from the art on the walls to the checked floors , the food is wicked! Really enjoyed the pork belly. Flippen fantastic . They have live music sometimes and the place really pumps 👍🏻
Reema Vather
deep fried mac and cheese balls were super and so was the side of potatos from my husband's wagyu beef which wasn't the best he has had but he was happy with. I had the slow roasted lamb rocknroll which was too huge to finish in one sitting but was flavourful.
Sachin Ram-Asary
Great setup. Good beer, good food, good local live music. Had the Wagyu beef and deep-fried mac and cheese. Both were excellent. Service is a bit slow though.
Riona Arjoon
Enjoyed the Sunday lunch Wagyu special for only R150!! What a bargain. Service was excellent and there's live music on a Sunday. Highlight was still the food though...yum!
Thule Mathebula
A must visit in Melville. The spicy wings are amazing and the pizza is decent. <br/>The wine selection is very limited which is disappointing but all in all,a good dining experience.
Anthony
Surprisingly good food. Had the skillet fillet and it was properly spicy. Damn tasty too.<br/><br/>"Smokey library with a pub" ambience. Leather couches, tables. Be sure to book a table, or arrive early if you want outside space. Good service from Donna.
Olivia Clunie
Its fair to say that this is one of my favourite places out in Jhb. Besides the obvious fact that the ambience is something amazing, tranfering you to maby something you'll find in the States with the rock n roll playing in the background it unites hands with an incredible menu that delivers all that it states. From long and loved smoked carvery to the best cooked steaks (the way it should be served) it includes a concentrated non over filled variety with frequent specials and events. <br/><br/>
Mona Makwakwa
Hell's Kitchen is an ok restaurant that serves ok food. The service is ok, nothing breath taking. Wouldn't bother dining there again, there is nothing memorable about this restaurant. It's just OK.
Israel Skosana
Great chicken wings and ribs. Quick service, stunning themed decor and solid rock n roll vibe. <br/><br/>Layout includes a lounge area and a bar for pre or post dinner relaxation.
Mayank Mehta
The bar, the drinks, the vibe and the people are amazing to spend your weekend nights here getting drunk. However, what rather put me off was the fact that the bartender told me the drink would cost R74 but ended up charging me R81 after including the tip herself. I don't mind tipping but it should come from me and not be an obligation or anything mandatory. This happened twice and I don't think I'll visit this place again.
Carmel Van Wyk
Phatboy Pork belly and crunchy coleslaw washed down with a cold craft brew. And saucy sirloin topped with fresh garden salad and a cab sav❤️Deon Van Wyk

My type of Bar! used to be the old full stop cafe back in the day, but must say a complete revamp. Great set up and very authentic feel.  Decor fantastic and the music adds to the look and feel. Staff was very friendly and hard working. A bit disappointed with the selection of Craft Beer and I feel they should improve on that. Food was good! Go there on a Sunday and enjoy the music as they usually have a band playing.

Hell's Kitchen has to be one of my favorite places to visit. I do not visit the restaurant/pub much but when I do, it's guaranteed I get great service and excellent food. The Macaroni and cheese balls is a must. It has a nice seating area outdoors if you want fresh area or a smoke. The inside is so well decorated you kind of want to take it home. It is really a nice place to "chill" with friends and have a few drink, every now and then there is a live band to entertain you as you relax...
Kyle
We went for lunch to have the special where you get a 600gr prime rib and a lager for R160 and it was really good. Im a meat lover and that was a very nice prime rib that was very juice and very tasty. Very good meal at Hells kitchen. I also really like the cool chilled vibe of the place and all of the interior.
Kudzai Maeresa
Nice joint... great service. Great ambiance. Food is ok not great. Pork Belly was a little dry but overall experience was cool. The tequilas brilliant. Can't complain.
Stevenalexkarr
What a great venue. Loved the setting. Vibe was awesome even had a random guy dancing all by himself to the music the band provides. <br/><br/>Service was superb and the staff was great. Had a great afternoon meal - typical American style cuisine - great food - coffee was a bit strong but hey it was good. <br/><br/>We loved every moment. Will be back again.
Gary Greenberg
Popped into this restaurant/bar for a chilled evening with a friend. There is a good selection of beer on tap, however, a very limited selection of vegetarian meals. It was unfortunate that there was no mac and cheese available this Saturday evening. I ordered a butternut pizza which was fairly tasty and packed with feta! <br/><br/>The ambience is great as they play a variety of music from indie rock (e.g. the Shins) to mainstream rock/metal. The service here was quite efficient and fast. It was not too crowded inside.<br/><br/>I will be back in the near future.
Johan Ferreira
Fantastic Sunday afternoon outing, great beer- and gin selection. The music was loungy and superb and service friendly. A must visit in Melville!!
Jacques Wentzel
Pretty nifty place to hang out if you're in a social mood. Always a good vibe and always busy. They also have cool decor and I really like the "hidden" room behind the bookcase. Gives it a nice effect. <br/><br/>The food quality is good as well. As for drinks, I would recommend having a Hellfire shot, pretty much one of my favorite shots ever.
Janel
Wow! What an experience!<br/>If you want a free spirited, adventurous and European style outing this is the place. I felt like I was in Cape Town or somewhere in Europe. People are free, friendly, smiley, arty with colorful hair, dressing style I don't get, different kinda vibe. <br/>Also this is the place for you to try moonshines, fireballs, cinnamon infused whiskey and gin and tonic, most produced in South Africa 👌🏼<br/>The food, drinks, waitress Alex (is so cute and friendly) was amazing. She made our visit so welcoming, helped to pick a dish and drinks. Well done Alex! <br/>Definitely place to go back and back to. I'm so over the moon I found this spot ❤️
TheHungryKat
The vibe here is amazing! We came by on Saturday night for a few birthday drinks. The waitress was lovely and so attentive. The place was packed. The drinks good too! Order the Hell Fire Whiskey - it's like a cinnamon/fire ball taste of glorious whiskey!
Grant Bursey
Tania Stacey Faber - Great food, had the Glazed Bacon and the Chipolte Burgers which were sublime .... but the deep fried macaroni balls ignited the deepest networks of nerve fibers electrifying the taste buds, asking the imagination to conjure up descriptions like this in order to blow some steam off before the next thing on the menu, only to repeat the process ... leaving you with more of these to read
Tandi Hattingh
Fun place for a razzle, Food is always great, along with a fantastic wine list.  Their Hellfire is definitely my favourite shooter. service is good, food is better, but the place as a whole is superb
Must Love Pudding
Great vibe for a late day chill. Love the hell fire (hot whiskey) shot. Hubby had a maypel bacon burger which he claims to be yum. I had the butternut pizza which was great. They brew their own ice teas, I recommend the peach. Overall a good Sunday afternoon with friends.
Erica Geldenhuys
Had a really bad experience here. Staff is really rude and basically don't exist. Vibe is good but felt uncomfortable because the staff were super rude.
Bridget Meyer
Great hangout spot in Melville in a great location. I love sitting outisde looking onto 7th Street...just watching the world go by, or sitting with a group of friends in their courtyard eating pizzas and drinking beer. I wouldn't rave about their food or service, but love the chilled vibe.
Will Kleyn
Not sure what the fuss was all about. But the average 3.7 rating is a bit of an over statement. Ordered the lamb special, which was R150. It arrived as cold as the beetroot salad that came with it . On the plus side the potatoes were warm, but then again that is expected when it looks like it's been soaked in oil overnight.
Chris De Beer
Cool hipster hang out in melville . Venue is amazing . Just a cool place to sit and relax and watch the world go past . The only down fall is that it gives typical melville service . Slow and sometimes non existing .
Rakhil Sewpersadh
Awesome food, awesome service and great beer. A few months ago the guests at the table next to us were complaining about us vaping. The waiter rushed to our rescue and educated them on the vaping restrictions (which is none). Told them that they can go sit inside (what retards). The waiter apologized on behalf of them and gave us a free round of fireball whiskey! What legends!
Kevin Osner
Great diner food, packed with smokey/sticky/hearty flavour, cooked over a wood fire, in heaped generous portions enough to share between the whole table. Small menus are a great thing; it means the chefs know the dishes and can cook it fresh.<br/><br/>The music's loud for a restaurant, but that's the kind of spot this - and it draws a packed house with an edgy vibe. I've read "student hangout" about Hell's Kitchen, on Friday the average age was definitely older than that<br/><br/>7th Ave in Melville is looking fantastic as well - I hadn't been to this area for years, and it's still super trendy, but much more upmarket than I remember from student days. We'll be back to try other bars along the way
Rrbex Noms
An edgy, warm and relaxed spot with a small menu and large gin selection. I enjoyed their fiery hot chicken wings, served with fries. The wings were a bit drier than one would expect, but I suspect that it's because they're grilled. Staff suited the aesthetic of the place and the service was prompt. Unfortunately they did have quite a few menu items out of stock, which limited our selection off of an already small menu. Good for a once-off eat-out experience, but not a place I would frequent for the food.
GOODATEATING
There are so many things that Hells Kitchen is doing right, and their popularity is rightfully owned- they, 100% have the bragging rights. I personally think it’s so great because it has all the feel good vibes waiting for you under one roof; Great food, great vibe and lovely inside aesthetics. It’s a really good place to try have a good time and still get something bomb to eat! The menu is so different and may potentially throw you off guard, but I promise everything that’s offered is really tasty in its own unique way. Your taste buds go through this journey that’s only filled with good times. <br/><br/> <br/><br/> <br/><br/>I rate the best thing that the restaurant has going on is that their staff really contribute to the culture, edgy and smooth and still able to maintain comfortability. I also cannot go without mentioning their uniqueness with regards to them making their own whiskey and craft beer, I think it’s so cool when restaurants try add their own authenticity. It’s their way of being better than those that are doing similar things to them. <br/><br/> <br/><br/>This is the type place that you come to when you’re looking to have a good time with mates. It’s not there for serious time conversations but rather when you’re looking to be with friends and family. It’s the type of place where you bring your friend or family that’s a guaranteed fun time. It creates that environment that will allow each person to feel as relaxed and chilled as they possibly could. It brings out the fun, chilled version of yourself. I would come here strictly for social purposes, it’s a place that’s focused on allowing people to let lose and enjoy themselves and the company around them.<br/><br/> <br/><br/>Overall as I’ve repeatedly mentioned, it’s a very good place to eat, have fun, and live your best life. You can’t go wrong with with a good bar, good ambiance, and great food. 100% worth a try!
Arina Smith
This place makes the senses come alive! Definitely the best bar experience I've had in a while and for the love of God please have one of their burgers.
Robyn Amy Fincham
Great location!! Incredible atmosphere, very vibey.<br/>The food is perfect for an everyday dinner and very reasonably priced. The service was great, very friendly wait staff.
Futhi Njapha
I really enjoyed the vibe off the place all rock and roll however the service is rather slow, the food was good I ordered the HK burger even though it was a bit on the dry side it was still good, not really for the faint hearted if you are looking for a quiet and "conventional" place to eat.
Monique Heymans
The service was amazing! The owner is such a nice. I will definitely recommend this place to anyone and everyone.  The house beer is amazing something to try for anyone who loves a beer
Philip Van Der Walt
Vibe gets a 100% from us. The food is ok, but not the best out there. The menu has great items on, but the quality of the food is just missing that something. Great place nonetheless.
Kylie
I don't rate this restaurant at all! Looks like a "varsity hangout" the food was average, took long to deliver and they ran out of fries. Had to give us other side orders. The menu is very limited.
Kate Leigh Walker
This place has a really cool vibe about it. The atmosphere and staff were great and not to mention the music. We had a really enjoyable meal here on Saturday night. If you looking for good food and a fun night out Hell's Kitchen is worth a visit.
Monica Maree
An all together interesting experience. The first thing that draws you in is the name..Upon entering the decor is something between a cluedo murder mystery with the hidden party room and an old manor library. I perused the various volumes of encyclopedias and thoroughly enjoyed the read whilst enjoying a good glass of wine. The food as well was fantastic but I am more drawn to the atmosphere rather than the dining. Still a must visit gem in Melville.
Carolyn Watt-Pringle
This place is always busy. I absolutely love the look, the music and their pulled pork tacos are the absolute best. Bit pricey, and service is slacking. The music is great and we always have a great party. Check out their secret room ;-)
Lisa Pi
One word, COOL! Everything about this place is cool - the location, the name, decor, vibe, waiters, music, and patrons. I'm in love, but not with the food, unfortunately. 3/5 for their food | 4/5 for everything else. <br/><br/>We were a large table, on a Saturday evening. Our waitress (unfortunately I don't remember her name) was exceptional! Such speedy and friendly service, wow, if only other establishments were this well run.<br/><br/>I tried the chicken wings (with BBQ sauce), and a side of deep fried mac and cheese. It was all disappointing. I expected the mac and cheese to be packed with flavour and cheesiness, but we had none of that, it lacked salt, was dry and hardly had any gooey melting cheese. Others at the table who also ordered this side were equally disappointed. The BBQ sauce on the chicken wings had no depth in flavour, it was just sweet, and the falafel wrap was very dry. <br/>My husband had the Phat Boy (pork belly), this was a good dish, the belly was cooked to perfection, was well seasoned and had that oh so perfect crispy fat. <br/><br/>I'd probably try their food again, but I'll definitely recommend Hell's Kitchen for a night off Hellfire Whiskey over their food.
Jolene
I've really tried to like this place, but it just isn't growing on me. It's usually so packed that you can't even find a seat. It's always a struggle to get a drink from your waiter or the bar, and the food is average at best. I am also not really a big Melville fan in general, because I never get the hype around it.
Nico Gray
Phenomenally good Mac and Cheese Balls. This restaurant comes alive on Fri and Sat evening. With a non pretentious vibe and indy style people, this is a restaurant you can go to and relax. I only have had the burgers...and they were amazing!
Aidan
I had heard good things about Hell's Kitchen and was excited when some friends recommended the restaurant for a Wednesday meet up. The restaurant is in the heart of old Melville and the decor creates a great atmosphere. With craft beer on tap and wood fired grilling it sounded like a winning combo. <br/><br/>The first disappointment of the night was the service. There were few waiters and those on duty weren't particularly attentive. I had to order drinks from the bar and intercept a waitress to place a food order. This is ok for a local pub but not what I expected here. I ordered the pork belly with some extra fries. This was a further disappointment as the pork was overcooked and the crackling was charred. Chips were also bordering on the burnt side. No real sauce to speak of and insipid flavouring. The beer was good but it should be at craft beer prices.<br/><br/>Apparently these guys do a great Sunday lunch/dinner but after this experience I won't be queueing up to go back to Hell's Kitchen.

Hell's Kitchen is what I perceive as the heart of Mellville nightlife. Its easy to have a good time with the mysterious , yet playful decor, the friendly staff and a bar stocked to the brim with amazing liquor. Keep up the good vibes!

Very cool spot, great vibe and magic service. The HK burger was top. Gotta give the moonshine and home made tequila a try! Definitely be back / Back again now and even better.. Lamb burger one of the best meals I've eaten

My fiancé and I decided to grab lunch and a beer at Hells Kitchen which we had been to for drinks but never to sit down and eat. We had heard the steak and ribs were good so we settled on that. The vibe there is rad and our waitress was friendly but we did feel a bit rushed and it was not busy at all. Firstly we were handed menus which we went through and decided on our meals , but before placing our orders the waitress came on the managers request and exchanged our menus for updated ones which had all the food at a higher price. This was rude and unprofessional we thought but were hungry and expected it to be worth the price. <br/><br/>When our meals arrived my rump steak was a below average pale cut of meat and cooked badly , watery and bland. If it wasn't for the onion rings and chilli it wouldn't have been edible. The ribs were average. I feel like when you go out to eat the food should be of a higher standard than what you can cook at home yourself , I am no chef but I could have cooked a better steak than that for sure. Spur would have been more affordable and a tastier more satisfying meal. DISAPPOINTING!<br/><br/>After the meal the waitress took our plates without asking how it was and I felt obliged to be honest without being rude. She apologized and that was that. No follow up from the manager or any real concern. In my opinion and I'm sure I'm not the only one , when you name your bar / restaurant Hells Kitchen , the food side of the business should be up to par with service and quality. For us it defs wasn't and I feel it's a shame that a potentially great place could be ruined through arrogance and lack of delivery. It seems like the place runs more on their sense of self importance than genuine good food and service. I hope that it improves as I was a fan before today's experience!

Always been one of my favourite haunts in Jozi- hip, industrial and smacked with cool.<br/>Hell's Kitchen is one of the coolest and and grungiest places in Joburg and can compete with Cape Town for a good night out- <br/>lots of seating outside and really cool bar -inside a secret room and some cool Chesterfield couches etc to kick-back on. <br/>Also next door to a tattoo shop and hip barber as well as owning the Tex-Mex (La Sante Muerte) next door which is quite cool if you not into the meat/smokehouse vibe.<br/><br/>Planted ourselves outside and we had some snacks which were essentially the sides to the main meals- cornbread, onion rings and deep-fried mac cheese balls served with a jalapeño mayo type sauce on the side.<br/>Cornbread smoky and amazing flavour- massive macncheeseballs-good but lacked a bit more cheesiness and the onion rings - superb.<br/>Mains we all had a mixed bag but concensus was that most things lacked a bit of moisture or sauce.<br/>He ribs went down well - the Kellogg's crumbed chicken too and the pork belly tasty but bit dry.<br/>The brisket which was recommended was bland and totally lacked moisture to make it a proper po boy.Brisket was the weakest dish.<br/><br/>Very good portions- service sporadic and gets more so when it gets busier.<br/>Still great spot - but if you are a foodie its good but not great food.

If you like the speakeasy pub style gangster vibe, you'll like this place. Great atmosphere and the melville locals are entertaining in their own right. The food is good but not great. Also, not a large selection of meals. The options are simple and the portions are consistent with the prices. Nice place to have a pitstop in Melville.

The food here is great. I've had numerous items on the menu and all were very good. The vegetarian pizza with the spicy aoli is really yummy! And the onion rings are a really generous portion, and very tasty. A very cool place with a grungy feel, the music is also a huge winner for me!

Fantastic! Great food so well prepared and tasty, awesome vibe with really awesome music. The only of its kind in this vicinity which makes it a gem. Love it, will be back with the masses.

Heard so much about Hells Kitchen so we decided to give it a go. I certainly like the look of the place and it seems very hip & happening. Found a table inside and a helpful waitress. CBC Lager sold out but everything else available. Small menu but hopefully this means attention to detail. Ordered the soft tacos but we were told that certain items were not available. Settled for HK Burger and Ribs. The portion size of the ribs is very disappointing and it's certainly not value for money at R120. The burger was outstanding but the fries average. Overrated? I think so. These days we are spoilt for choice and I'm not sure we'll be back soon.

We went on a Saturday evening and the place was pumping - a real drinking hole! I love a place that offers craft beer on tap so I was happy that they obliged. They make their own cinnamon whisky liqueur called 'Hell Fire' which was delicious - I'd love to go back to buy a bottle! We ordered food as a table and whilst my Falafel tacos were pretty good, someone else's burger was half cooked and ribs were not crispy as advertised - a little disappointing. I don't think the fact that a place is busy is a very good excuse for the kitchen slipping (especially if they are used to this every weekend) but perhaps it was just a bad night! I wouldn't go to Hell's Kitchen to eat as it is predominantly a bar but their food selection is unusual so I was impressed.

Hipster old school uk vibe<br/>Really love this joint having been multiple times for drinks which is always fun<br/>Finally stopped by on Sunday for the lunch special. <br/>Really worth it<br/>Last week was surf and turf which was excellent.<br/>Steaks cooked properly and flavourful. prawns were alittle too spicy in a bad way.<br/>All in all worth astop

Wow! What a cool place! Anything goes here! Such a cool bohemian hipster vibe! Food is superb! The deep fried mac and cheese balls are so delish!! The HK burger is orgasmic! Definitely try this place out! Friday's are the shizz!

10% Service charges on cards #NotCool. And not allowed by banks. Otherwise decent.<br/>The muscles as are good and so are the ribs. But be sure to bring cash. Otherwise you're in for a surprise.

Before going there we were told that Hell's Kitchen is more for drinks than it is for food, so we were prepared. The atmosphere is relaxed and I felt right at home. The decor is edgy and very rock n roll, and the music is right up my alley. They have their own beer which is delicious, but the must-try is their Hell Fire cinnamon-laced whisky. Try it as a shot and be prepared to order a second one! (Apparently they bottle it and I really, really hope I will be able to get my hands on a bottle!) We got hungry at about 22:00 and decided to order the bacon and cheese pizza. I wasn't expecting much but the thin crust pizza was packed with bacon and cheese, delicious! All in all I'm not sure if HK will be for everyone, but they will definitely be seeing me again!

The place to have a few drinks....to enjoy friendship...to love food...to enjoy...<br/><br/>The decor is awesomely skull inspired.<br/><br/>The Hellfire whiskey, the craft beer...the food are all delicious...<br/><br/>A definete must to try

I haven't had food here. I don't know why anyone would, so his review is purely based on the drinks and ambiance. Hell's Kitchen is basically a bar/pub. Not much importance is placed on the food. <br/>Perfect as a hangout spot with a group of people on a Friday/Saturday night. Get proper food somewhere else and then come here for drinks.

Nice to sit outside in winter in the afternoon sun. But... Food is definitely overpriced. I ordered white wine and received red. It is a one size fits all...steak is medium rare, no exceptions. The ribs were small in comparison to the average portion size, and comes with no side order. Service not great. Think an acquired taste... Won't be back

I have heard so many good things about Hell's Kitchen, my expectations were quite high and I was not dissapointed! Unfortunately I didn't get to try the food on this occasion however a bunch of friends met here for drinks on Saturday night, the place was buzzing and the music was awesome! Finally a place that plays decent music! I will definitely be visiting again soon!

Menu here is quite limited, had falafel tacos which were fresh and nice ,only downside is that service was really slow, has a grungy vibe, drinks are nice too

Love this place. Instantly feel the heart of Melville inside with how the restaurant is set up aswell as the decor. Menu is limited but the quality of the food makes up for it. Perfect for after work drinks or a dinner party. The music they play adds to the American vibe. The hidden cigar lounge with a secret door is really cool too. One of my favourites. Definitely coming back!

A very cool bar! Decor is superb. It reminds me of what I expect an underground grunge bar in London to look and feel like. The offer a small food menu BUT be sure to go on a Sunday for lunch. They usually have two specials (vegetarian and carnivore) to chose from. I have been twice, once for mussels that blew my mind and the other time for prawns. Delicious delicious delicious food!

I would definitely go back here to grab drinks, but the food is not up to par.  The vibe is very funky and eclectic.  Looks almost exactly like my local bar in New York.  The music is quite loud, but I think this adds to the atmosphere.  <br/><br/>Our waitress (Ayla) was terribly rude and it was not until she saw her tip that she managed to smile and actually ask if we need anything.  The bartenders, on the other hand, were friendly.<br/><br/>There is a limited menu and when we arrived, we were told they were out of 5 items and 2 sides.  We were also told there was not enough cutlery.  The pizza and fries were good if you aren't expecting too much.  Thin cut fries, American style.  The lamb and beef burger were terrible.  The meat grade was very poor and the burgers were crumbly.  We also ordered a fried mac n' cheese which was cold in the middle. <br/><br/>Definitely go for drinks, but spare yourself the bad service and less than average food.

I've been waiting a while to review this super awesome spot as I wanted to sample more items on their menu and really get a feel for this place. <br/><br/>I can finally say that this has to be one of the most kick-a$$ places to go in Joburg. <br/><br/>The vibe at this place is electric, the decor is absolutely incredible and the music is always top notch. The service can be a little slow at times, especially on Fridays and Saturdays, but this is totally understandable as they have a tiny kitchen and the restaurant gets really packed. <br/><br/>The food here is phenomenal and packed full of flavour. They've really managed to capture the whole american smokehouse feel with their menu and definitely deliver with the food. <br/><br/>I've had a bunch of items off their menu but if I was to pick one to recommend I would have to go with their pulled pork soft shell tacos. The portion size is massive, the pork is tender and delicious, and the apple chipotle slaw is mind blowing. <br/><br/>If you're looking for something different with a really awesome vibe then do yourself a favour and check out Hell's Kitchen, you won't be disappointed! <br/><br/><br/>

Nice setting but quite a few issues with the place. Firstly, how can a restaurant serve chips but not serve tomato sauce or not have tomato sauce? I know it sounds simple, but extremely irritating, and had I known I would have gone for the pizza. Also quite a few fundamental items on the menu not available. I know it's not cool to eat meat well done, but I really don't like places who are too cool to cook my meat the way I like it. If Turn & Tender can make my steak well done, Hell's Kitchen can make my burger well done.
Chante Daries
The vibe was very rock n roll which is super cool and the decor is brilliant but it was extremely crowdy and noisy. The drinks were great though and it's a great vibe to hang out with a lot of mates.
Jenny Louw
Their food was not great, it was quite tasteless to be honest. The service is also quite slow because they're usually very busy. This is a nice lively place for a drink though and their decor is great. The management here is very friendly and accommodating.

The vibe - that's what you go to Hell's Kitchen for. I visited Hell's Kitchen on April 3 in a rough state, with the service friendly and the meal overall very pleasant in the afternoon sunshine (I've always been a fan of the inside decor). The Sunday specials are always interesting (three yum rolls this time) though it wouldn't be amiss to offer the normal menu, which satisfies most tastes. A broad range of drinks are available at the bar, and the feel of the street right next to you if sitting outside makes for an authentic experience. Like many joints in Melville, Hell's Kitchen suffers from street vendors walking into the area and trying to sell you something you don't need, interrupting a conversation or in the middle of your meal. However, if you are a Melville regular, this is already factored in and has little to do with Hell's Kitchen itself. Hell's Kitchen is worth a visit, be it for an after-work drink, a more substantial meal or just to experience Melville and watch the street and traffic roll by.

Sunday lunch meal was perfect. Great food, service and company. We were initially disappointed that the full menu was not offered on a Sunday but the special was delicious😊<br/>

Good vibe and food! This place is pretty jammed packed even on Thursday nights and on Saturdays, best would be to reserve a table otherwise there won't be any space. The chicken burger is good but the soft shell tacos were way too sour, as if someone in the kitchen over did it on the vinegar which made it a pretty terrible experience. The staff didn't seem to pay much attention to the patrons sitting outside so it was a bit difficult to get their attention.

I honestly have had 2 perfect burgers in joburg and @ Hells Kitchen was one of them. However my absolute favorite meal there was the baby back ribs, with a side of deep fried mac n cheese. It was heavenly. Throw in some loud music, a few drinks and the vibe and it's an all round good outing with friends. Don't forget to eat though
KarmaZebra
Popped in here very briefly for a drink, but that's all it took to impress me! @Hell's Kitchen, you had me at "Be Naked When I get Home"! ☺️ <br/>The setting is super cool...wood, leather, brick; bookshelves, LP's and neon lights all under one roof! The staff seems genuinely happy and eager to serve & share their wares. Loved the Rooibos and Fynbos infused Gin!! Will definitely back for meal!

Not sure where to start with the disappointment I'd experienced when visiting Hell's Kitchen... Firstly, the waitress got the simplest of drink orders wrong... She came in intervals of 30-45 minutes despite trying to get her attention and she even forgot to place one of the food orders. The food: absolutely lived up to its name of 'Hell's kitchen' - many of the items on the menu were not available (including chips/fries - - not sure how a restaurant is unable to provide something as simple as this) and the food that we received was way below average... The 'hot wings' that were ordered were inedibly hot/spicy (coming from someone who is obsessed with hot food as I eat mostly spicy food). It was almost inedible. The onion rings were pretty terrible as well. The margherita pizza and that was the saviour of the night as we were able to enjoy that, at least. I'm usually never this critical of a place, but I had such a horrible experience that night which left a bitter taste in my mouth. The plus is the decor at the place - really cool and different vibe.
